Abstract:Removal of Cs isotopes, one of the heat generators present in used fuel/reprocessing waste, is one of the most challenging obstacles in the disposal of these materials. For this purpose, a new silica-calix[4]crown material, CBisC6@SiO2, has been prepared. The material was created coupling a symmetric calixcrown derivative CBisC6 into the pores and channels of the SiO2-P particles through vacuum hybridization and immobilization. SEM, Si-29 solid-state CP/MAS NMR, N-2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA-DSC and XPS were used to characterize the structure of the final material. The adsorption of Cs and some representative metals onto CBisC6@SiO2 has been investigated in the range of 0.4 to 6.0 M HNO3. CBisC6@SiO2 showed strong adsorption ability and selectivity for Cs over all of others except for Rb in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption mechanism of Cs was verified using XRD and FT-IR spectra. The separation of Cs from other waste materials by CBisC6@SiO2 was performed through six adsorption-desorption cycles. The removal efficiency of Cs was 99.5%, while other fission products were weakly absorbed except for Rb with the removal efficiency of 85.3%. A nearly quantitative removal of Cs by CBisC6@SiO2 was achieved.
Adsorption of Cesium and Some Typical Coexistent Elements Onto a Modified Macroporous Silica-Based Supramolecular Recognition Material.

Abstract:To find an effective method in separation of Cs(I), an advanced macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition composite, (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P, was synthesized. It was done by impregnation and immobilization of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4]arene (Calix[4]arene-R14) and methyloctyl-2-di-methy-lbutanemide (MODB) into the pores of the SiO2-P particles. MODB was used to modify Calix[4]arene-R14. The adsorption of some typical fission products such as Mo(VI), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), Cs(I), and Zr(IV) contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) onto (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P was investigated. It was performed by examining the effects of contact time, the concentration of HNO3 in the range of 0.3–7.0M, and operation temperature on the adsorption of the tested metals. (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P showed strong adsorption ability and excellent selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested metals. The separation of Cs(I) from a simulated HLW containing 5.0mM of the tested elements was performed by (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P packed column at 298K. Mo(VI), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), and Zr(IV) showed no adsorption and were eluted into effluent along with 3.0M HNO3. Cs(I) adsorbed by (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P was effectively eluted with water and then separated from the others. The results demonstrated that in 3.0M HNO3, (Calix[4]+MODB)/SiO2-P is promising to apply in separation of Cs(I), one of the heat generators, from HLW in the SPEC (Strontium/Cesium Partitioning from HLW by Extraction Chromatography) process developed recently.

Abstract:A novel macroporous silica-based 25,27-bis(iso-propyloxy)calix[4]arene-26,28-crown-6 (BiPCalix[4]C6) supramolecular recognition material, BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P, was synthesized. It was prepared by impregnation and the immobilization of the BiPCalix[4]C6 molecule into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles. The adsorption of Cs(I) and some typical elements Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Mo(VI), La(III), and Y(III) onto the BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P material was investigated. The effects of the HNO3 concentration, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption of the tested metals were studied. It was found that at the optimum concentration of 3.0 M HNO3, BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P exhibited excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Cs(I) over all the tested elements, which showed weak or almost no adsorption except Rb(I). A pseudo-second-order model was found to be able to describe the adsorption kinetics of Cs(I). The chemical complexation of Cs(I) with BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P was considered to be the rate-controlling step. Meanwhile, the thermodynamic parameters of the Cs(I) adsorption, H, G, and S were determined. The adsorption of Cs(I) onto BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P was exothermic. It was demonstrated that in 3.0 M HNO3, the novel macroporous BiPCalix[4]C6/SiO2-P material shows promise for the partitioning of Cs(I) from highly active liquid waste.
Cesium and Strontium Uptake Utilizing a New Ternary Solid-State Supramolecular Adsorbent under a Framework of Group Partitioning

Abstract:To simultaneously remove Sr and Cs from a simulated highly active liquid waste, a new ternary solid-state supramolecular adsorbent BnPC6DTXAD-7 (BnPDTX7), based on organic chelating agents 25,27-bis(1-n-propoxy)-calix[4]26,28-crown-6 (BnPC6), 4,4'(5')-di-tert-butyldicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DT), and polymeric carrier XAD-7 was prepared for the first time. Scanning electronic microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis demonstrated that BnPDTX7 is a macroporous adsorbent. The adsorption of 20 metals onto BnPDTX7 were studied. Under the optimal adsorption conditions of 3.0 M HNO3, 298 K, and contact time of 60 min, the adsorption capacity toward Cs and Sr were 0.1396 mM/g and 0.1289 mM/g, respectively. The experimental data fit well with the Langmuir model, indicative of the monolayer adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters, Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees of Cs and Sr adsorption and other valuable chemical engineering data were obtained. BnPDTX7 proves to be a promising adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of Sr and Cs because of its high selectivity, fast kinetics, and high stability.

Abstract:Based on the intermolecular modification of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4]) with 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DBC), a hybridized macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition material, Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P, was prepared. The agents were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of the SiO2-P particles support. The adsorption of Cs(I), Sr(II), and some typical coexistent metals onto Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P was investigated. The influence of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M was studied. Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P exhibited high adsorption ability and selectivity for Sr(II) and Cs(I) except for Rb(I) and BA(II). The simultaneous partitioning of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a simulated highly active liquid waste was performed by Calix[4]@DBC/ SiO2-P packed column. They were effectively eluted with water and flowed into effluent along with Rb(I) and Ba(II), while others showed no adverse impact. Abstract:In this article, we explore the sorption behavior of Zr(IV) ions by lithium titanate (LiTi), magnesium titanate (MgTi), and lithium magnesium titanate (LiMgTi) sorbents. These sorbents, fabricated using the precipitation method, were used for the Zr(IV) sorption from aqueous solutions. We employed various analytical tools, including XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM, and EDX, to examine the prepared sorbents' structure, morphology, and functional groups. We also studied the effect of pH, time, initial metal concentrations, temperature, and interfering species on sorption. The kinetic data obey pseudo-first-order. Many isotherm models were utilised to investigate equilibrium data. The results of thermodynamic functions show an endothermic and spontaneous sorption process. Finally, the influence of the interfering species reveals that as the concentration of CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 , and NaCl increases, the Zr(IV) adsorption rate decreases. The investigation demonstrated that LiMgTi is suitable for retaining Zr(IV) from aqueous solutions and could purify effluent polluted with Zr(IV) ions.

Abstract:The accumulation of P in agricultural soils due to fertilization has increased the risk of P losses from agricultural fields to surface waters. In risk assessment systems for P losses, both P release from soil to solution and transport mechanisms need to be considered. In this study, the overall objective was to identify soil variables for prediction of potential P release from soil to solution. Soils from nine sites of the Swedish long-term fertility experiment were used, each with four soil P levels. Phosphorus extractable with CaCl2 was used as an estimate of potential P release from soil to solution. Ammonium lactate-extractable phosphorus (P-AL) or NaHCO3-extractable phosphorus (Olsen P) could not be used alone for prediction of potential P release since soils with high phosphorus sorption capacity (PSC) released less P than soils with low PSC at the same soil test phosphorus (STP) level. Degree of phosphorus saturation (DPS) was calculated as Olsen P or P-AL as a percentage of PSC derived from P sorption isotherms or from Fe and Al extractable in ammonium oxalate. The CaCl2-extractable total phosphorus (CaCl2-TP) was exponentially related to these DPS values (r2 > or = 0.79). The CaCl2-TP was also linearly related to ratios between Olsen P or P-AL and a single-point phosphorus sorption index (PSI; r2 > or = 0.86). These ratios, which are easily determined and gave good correlations with CaCl2-TP, seemed to be the most useful estimates of potential P release for risk assessment systems.

Abstract:In this study, the batch technique was used for the sorption of Sr(II) and Cs(I) onto silica loaded with Aspergillus brasiliensis (AB@S). The precipitation technique was used to synthesize the AB@S bio-sorbent, which was then evaluated using several analytical instruments such as XRD, FT-IR, and SEM. The results of this investigation revealed that the sorption process had a short equilibrium time (40 min). The distribution coefficient values have a sequence order Sr(II) ˃ Cs(I). AB@S sorbent has saturation capacity for Sr(II) and Cs(I) 72.2 and 26.1 mg g −1 , respectively. The reaction kinetics follow the pseudo-second-order model with capacity values of 5.01 and 3.53 mg g −1 for Sr(II) and Cs(I), respectively. Applicability of Langmuir isotherms has capacity values of 66.3 and 23.38 mg g −1 for Sr(II) and Cs(I), respectively. Thermodynamics data are endothermic and spontaneous. The AB@S is a promising bio-sorbent for the removal of 85 Sr and 134 Cs from simulated radioactive waste (SRW). The investigation proved that the AB@S is suitable to adsorb Sr(II) and Cs(I) from aqueous solutions and could be considered potential material for the purification of effluent contaminated with these ions.

Abstract:Here, we have reported a simple and one-step hydrothermal method for preparing a highly uniform sodium zirconosilicate mesoporous sorbent supported with vanadium oxide nanoparticles (VO2). The results showed the formation of NPs with a surface area of 73.21 m2/g and with a particle size ranged from 67 to 80 nm. Furthermore, the proposed fabricated composite has been used to significantly remove the cesium and strontium ions from the aqueous solution by a batch method. The phase and structural characteristics of the VO2/zirconosilicate nanocomposites were well studied by using XRD, SEM, HRTEM, and nitrogen adsorption techniques. The results showed that the cesium and strontium ions were efficiently adsorbed by mesoporous VO2/zirconosilicate ion exchanger at a natural and wide pH ranges. Various kinetic and isotherms models have been developed to highlight the adsorption process of cesium and strontium ions. The fabricated zeolitic materials exhibited an adsorption capacity of 30.5 and 22.2 mg g−1 for Cs(I) and Sr(II), respectively. The collected data showed that the synthesized VO2/zirconosilicate has the maximum potential to properly remove Cs(I) and Sr(II) from the aqueous media.Graphical A microporous VO2/zirconosilicate nanocomposite adsorbent has been designed for efficient removal of cesium and strontium from contaminated samples. The synthesized nanocomposite indicated a highly ability to remove Cs(I) and Sr(II) ions in ultra-dilute solutions.

Immobilization Behavior of Cerium Ions in the Zirconolite Ceramic Solidified Radioactive Waste Forms

Abstract:The zirconolite ceramics with excellent long-term behavior and good containment capacity could be envisaged as good candidates for minor actinides immobilization. Thus the material having the composition Ca0.85Ce0.15ZrTi1.85Al0.5O7 were fabricated by a wet chemical method. The immobilization behavior was characterized by Rietveld refinement. Results show that Ce3+ and Al3+ ions entered into the calcium site and into the split five-fold coordinated titanium site, respectively. The coordination status of Ce3+ in the crystal lattice was confirmed by SEM, and the chemical durability test was measured by the ASTM Product Consistency Test (PCT) leaching method. The leaching resistance shows that the solidified radioactive waste forms would be stable for the geological isolation, and normalized release rate of Ce(NRce) reaches 10(-5) g.m(-2).d(-1) at 7 d.

Abstract:Polystyrene resins (PS) have been practical ion exchangers for radionuclides removal from water. However, nonspecific effects of ion exchange groups continue to be a major obstacle for emergency treatment with coexisting ions of high concentrations. The selectivity for Cs+ enables zirconium phosphate (ZrP) to be the most promising inorganic sorbent for radioactive cesium extraction, despite being difficult to synthesize and causing excessive pressure loss in fixed-bed reactors due to fine powder. Herein, through facile confined crystallization in host macropores, we prepared PS confined α-ZrP nanocrystalline (ZrP-PS). Size-screen sorption of layered α-ZrP and sulfonic acid group preconcentration of PS synergistically enable a considerably higher Cs+ affinity of ZrP-PS than PS, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. ZrP-PS demonstrated remarkable cesium sequestration performance in both batch and continuous experiments, with a high adsorption capacity of 269.58 mg/g, a rapid equilibrium within 80 min, and a continuous effluent volume of 2300 L/kg sorbents. Given the excellent selectivity for Cs+ and flexibility to separate from treated water, ZrP-PS holds great promise as purification packages for the emergency treatment of radioactively contaminated water.
Adsorption and separation of Cs(I) and Ba(II) from aqueous solution using zinc ferrite-humic acid nanocomposite

Abstract:Reclaimable adsorbents have an essential role in removing radionuclides from waste streams. Herein, zinc ferrite-humic acid ZFO/HA nanocomposite was synthesized for effective cesium and barium adsorption. The prepared ZFO/HA nanocomposite was analyzed using analytical techniques including XRD, FTIR, EDX, and SEM. From kinetic studies, the mechanism adsorption process follows the second model. The isotherm studies clarified that the Langmuir model fit the adsorption of both ions onto the prepared sample, and the monolayer capacities are equal to 63.33 mg/g and 42.55 mg/g for Ba(II) and Cs(I), respectively. The temperature parameter was also studied, and the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and endothermic. The maximum separation between two ions was achieved at pH 5 (αCs/Ba = 3.3).

Abstract:SBA?15 is a porous silicon molecular sieve with large aperture and good thermal stability. It shows a promising prospect in the field of separation. In this study,mesoporous silica SBA?15 was synthesized and employed to investigate cesium sorption from aqueous solution. The synthesized SBA?15 was characterized with TEM and FTIR.The effects of pH,cesium initial concentration,adsorbent dosage,contact time and ionic strength on the sorption of cesium were studied in details.The experimental results showed that the sorption e?quilibrium could be achieved in 120 min at pH=6.The cesium sorption capacity was found to be 26.31 mg/g at the cesium initial concentration of 40 mg/L.The sorption isotherm and kinetics were investigated.The sorp?tion equilibrium data was well fitted with Langmuir isotherms,and the sorption kinetics was well defined by the Pseudo?first?order model.

Abstract:The capture of the radionuclides strontium and cesium is of great importance to the environment, human health, and the sustainable development of nuclear energy, and zirconium phosphate with excellent ion exchange capacity has potential application in this field. In this work, we organically granulated zirconium phosphate to induce the formation of composite bead materials (CA@ZrP) with a calcium-containing phase with selectivity for Sr2+ and Cs+ higher than that of pure ZrP in low-pH environments and competing ionic environments. The adsorption performance of the material was systematically investigated. It was concluded that the adsorption performance of CA@ZrP improved with an increase in temperature, and under the dynamic adsorption experimental conditions, the treatment capacity of CA@ZrP for Sr2+ and Cs+ reached 404.79 and 302.2 bed volumes, respectively. The systematic study and characterization showed that the generation of the calcium-containing phase [Ca0.55ZrH0.9(PO4)2] promoted the exchange of Ca2+ with Sr2+ and Cs+, thus improving the selectivity of the composite beads. The highly selective composite bead material can be prepared in batches and easily recycled, providing a new idea for practical engineering applications.
Radiochemical Studies on the Separation of Cesium, Cobalt, and Europium from Aqueous Solutions Using Zirconium Selenomolybdate Sorbent

Abstract:A procedure for removal and separation of Cs, Eu and activation product of Co using zirconium selenomolybdate was developed. Interactions of 134 Cs(I), 152,154 Eu(III), and 60 Co(II) ions from HNO 3 acid solutions with zirconium selenomolybdate matrix, dried at 50°C, have been individually investigated by the batch equilibration method. The sorption behavior of the three ions showed a selectivity sequence in the following order: Cs(I) > Eu(III) > Co(II). The breakthrough capacities of zirconium selenomolybdate for Cs(I), Eu(III) and Co(II) were found to be 0.82, 0.45, and 0.18 mmol/g of the sorbent, respectively. A mixture of the three radionuclides ( 1 × 10 − 2 M each) in 140 mL of 1 × 10 − 2 M HNO 3 solution was passed through 1 g zirconium selenomolybdate chromatographic column. Thereafter, quantitative elution of the retained Co(II) was achieved with 14 mL of 1 × 10 − 1 M HNO 3 acid solution leaving Eu(III) and Cs(I) strongly retained onto the column. Quantitative elution of Eu(III) was achieved by passing 22 mL 2.5 × 10 − 1 M HNO 3 . About 89% of the retained Cs(I) was eluted with 32 mL of 2 M NH 4 Cl solution at a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min.

Abstract:Radionuclides removal and immobilization are crucial issue for liquid radioactive waste management. Zr-Ca-Mg and Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates performance for Cs + ions adsorption and immobilization was studied. Adsorption of stable Cs + on composite phosphates was well described by Sips model and pseudo-second order kinetics. Zr-Ca-Mg samples had the highest Cs + adsorption capacity (< 2.40 mmol/g) compared to Ti-Ca-Mg phosphates (< 2.18 mmol/g). The samples with high Ti and Zr content were characterized by enhanced efficiency of 137 Cs radionuclide adsorption ( K d > 10 4 mL/g) in wide range pH of 4.0–10.0. Metal phosphates calcined at 1000 °C shown the safe immobilization of Cs + ions.

A description was given for preparation and properties of these precursors. The physicochemical properties of these nanocomposites were determined using different techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Data clarified that supporting potassium zinc hexacyanoferrates on iron ferrite nanoparticles increased their thermal stability. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that the nanocomposites were well coordinated and incorporated in the polymer matrix. The average particle sizes, of these nanoparticles, determined by SEM had a good agreement with XRD results. Based on characterization data, the prepared zinc hexacyanoferrates were proposed to have a zeolitic rhombohedral structure with cavities can host alkali metal ions and water molecules. The magnetic analysis showed a super-paramagnetic behavior. Batch technique was applied to evaluate the influences of initial pH value, contact time, and competing cations on the efficiency of cesium removal. The sorption process was fast initially, and maximum separation was attained within 2h of contact. Cesium exchange was independent from pH value and deviate from ideal exchange phenomena. In neutral solutions, Cs(+) was retained through exchange with K(+); however, in acidic solution, phase transformation was proposed. Sorption capacity of these materials attained values amounted 1965 mg g(-1). The synthesized nanocomposites exhibited different affinities toward Cs(I), Co(II), and Eu(III) elements and showed a good ability to separate them from each other.

Selective Separation of Zr(IV) from Simulated High-Level Liquid Waste by Mesoporous Silica

Abstract:The efficient separation of Zr(IV) ions from strong acidic and radioactive solutions is a significant challenge, especially in the context of the aqueous reprocessing of nuclear fuels. The complexity of such solutions, which are often characterized by high acidity and the presence of radioactive elements, poses formidable challenges for separation processes. Herein, several mesoporous silicas (HMS, MCM-41, KIT-6, and SiO2-70 Å) with excellent acid and radiation resistance properties were employed as sorbents to remove Zr(IV) ions from simulated high-level liquid waste. The batch experiments were designed to investigate the influence of adsorption time, HNO3 concentration, initial Zr(IV) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the adsorption behavior of Zr(IV). The results indicate that the adsorption equilibrium time of mesoporous silica materials was approximately 8 h, and all the adsorption processes followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics equation. The isotherms of Zr(IV) adsorption by KIT-6 exhibited good agreement with the Langmuir model, while the Freundlich model could be utilized to fit the adsorption on HMS, MCM-41, and SiO2-70 Å. The adsorption capacity of MCM-41 for Zr(IV) in 3 mol/L HNO3 was 54.91 mg/g, which is three times the adsorption capacity reported for commercial silica gel (17.91 mg/g). The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption processes for zirconium are endothermic reactions. Furthermore, the mesoporous silicas exhibited a pronounced selectivity in the adsorption of Zr(IV) within a simulated high-level liquid waste containing 10 co-existing cations (3 mol/L HNO3). This suggests that mesoporous silicas have great potential for Zr(IV) removal in actual radioactive liquids with high acidity during spent fuel reprocessing.

Abstract:Salt lake brine originating from Qinghai, China has abundant cesium resources and huge total reserves. The inorganic ion exchangers ammonium molybdophosphate (AMP) and zirconium phosphate (ZrP) have the significant advantages of separating and extracting Cs+ as a special adsorbent. Nevertheless, their high solubility in water leads to a decrease in their ability to adsorb Cs+ in aqueous solutions, causing problems such as difficulty with using adsorbents alone and a difficult recovery. In this work, an environmentally friendly polyurethane sponge (PU sponge) with a large specific surface area is employed as an adsorbent carrier by physically impregnating dopamine-coated AMP and ZrP onto a PU sponge, respectively. The experiment found that under the same conditions, the AMP/PU sponge performs better than the ZrP/PU sponge for Cs+ adsorption. When the amount of adsorbent reaches 0.025 g, the adsorption capacity reaches saturation. The adsorption efficiency remains above 80% when the concentration of Cs+ is 5–35 mg/L. The kinetic calculations show that adsorption is spontaneous, feasible, and has a higher driving force at high temperatures. In addition, the power and mechanism of the interaction between adsorbent and adsorbent are explained using the density functional theory calculation. This efficient, stable, and selective Cs+ adsorbent provides design guidelines.
