Abstract:Background: At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, support for breastfeeding was disrupted in many countries. Italy was severely impacted by the pandemic and is known to have the lowest exclusive breastfeeding rate of all European countries. Considering the inverse association between anxiety and breastfeeding, maternal concerns about the COVID-19 emergency could reduce breastfeeding rates. The aim of the study is to explore the association between infant feeding practices and maternal COVID-19 concerns. Methods: This paper is a secondary analysis of the cross-sectional study COVID-ASSESS conducted in Italy in 2020. The original survey was administered in two phases: during the first lockdown and during the reopening. The survey included five sections: socio-demographic, medical history, concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, infant feeding practices and psychometric evaluation. Participants were considered eligible for the post-hoc analyses if they were exclusively breastfeeding or they were feeding with infant formula (either alone or with breastfeeding) at the time of the interview. Results: Between phase 1 and phase 2 there was a decrease in anxiety and concerns about the danger of COVID-19 to general health, except for concerns about their baby's health. Women using formula were more concerned about all the health topics investigated. Moreover, they showed higher levels of stress, state anxiety, somatization and PTSD symptoms. Conclusion: Breastfeeding during the first pandemic lockdown in Italy seems to have been an independent factor associated with lower anxiety about COVID-19, fewer psychopathological symptoms, and a positive experience of infant feeding.

Abstract:PURPOSE: To analyze breastfeeding and the factors that positively influence the first hour of life, during hospitalization, and at discharge during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.DESIGN AND METHOD: This is a retrospective cohort study, with data collected from medical records. Consisting of 225 mother-newborn dyads with deliveries between 2020 and 2021. Breastfeeding in the first hour of life, during hospitalization, and at discharge was considered as the outcome variable. The independent variables were sociodemographic, obstetric, and neonatal data. The analysis was performed with bivariate and multivariate regression through a generalized linear model (Poisson family), with a 5% significance level. It was approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), under approval number 4,911,317.RESULT: Newborns of women without COVID-19 suspicion or diagnosis and who had skin-to-skin contact with their mother at birth are twice as likely to be breastfed in the first hour of life. Absence of complications in the newborn during hospitalization and no COVID-19 suspicion or diagnosis double the exclusive breastfeeding rate during hospitalization. Newborns exclusively breastfed during hospitalization present 1.6 times more chances of being exclusively breastfeeding at hospital discharge.CONCLUSION: It was evidence that women who gave birth without COVID-19 suspicion, and newborns who had skin-to-skin contact with their mother at birth represented a predictive factor for favoring exclusive breastfeeding.PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This research contributes to the innovation of evaluating breastfeeding in the newborn's first hour of life, during hospitalization, and at discharge in a pandemic context.

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the role of prenatal maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding practices through 6 months postpartum. Study design: A cohort of mother-infant dyads who delivered at a large medical center in New York City and who had either documented history of prenatal SARS-CoV-2 infection, no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection, or who delivered in February 2020 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic were invited to participate in the COVID-19 Mother Baby Outcomes (COMBO) Initiative. These three groups of mothers completed surveys about their breastfeeding practices at 1, 2, 4, and/or 6 months postpartum, and responses were compared across enrollment group at each postpartum assessment period. Results: Data from 557 mother-infant dyads was included. The SARS-CoV-2 infected group reported significantly lower rates of mostly or exclusively breastfeeding at 1 month, 2 months, and 4 months postpartum. When analyses were separated by birth timing and maternal ethnicity, these differences between infected and uninfected mothers were only significant in the second pandemic wave delivery group and in Latina mothers. Conclusions for practice: Maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy was associated with lower rates of mostly or exclusively breastfeeding through 4 months postpartum. These differences may have been driven by delivery timing during the pandemic and self-reported maternal ethnicity. These results suggest a need to increase resources and support for breastfeeding during healthcare-disruptive events such as the pandemic, particularly for those belonging to groups historically underserved in healthcare.

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the repercussions of COVID-19 on the length of breastfeeding and analyze the associated factors in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Method: This is an epidemiological, prospective cohort study. Data were collected from medical records and through telephone interviews. Women who weaned were estimated using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. The log-rank test was used to verify differences between groups, analyzing weaning time, according to sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. The values of hazard ratio and 95% confidence intervals were estimated using Cox regression analysis. Results: A total of 1,729 women participated in the study. During the COVID-19 pandemic, brown women and women undergoing cesarean section were more likely to stop breastfeeding. Conclusion: The birth route and mothers' ethnic characteristics were associated with early weaning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Such findings are important to guide the assistance of the multidisciplinary team, especially nursing, during the post-pandemic period and in future epidemiological scenarios.
Influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on breastfeeding support for healthy mothers and the association between compliance with WHO recommendations for breastfeeding support and exclusive breastfeeding in Japan

Abstract:Background: Professional breastfeeding support contributes to maternal and child health. However, the influence of the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on breastfeeding support has not been carefully examined. Therefore, we assessed maternal breastfeeding intention and professional breastfeeding support before and during the pandemic. We further examined the association of compliance with World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for professional breastfeeding support with exclusive breastfeeding during the pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional, internet-based, questionnaire study analyzed data from 484 healthy women with live singleton births between 15 October 2019 and 25 October 2020 in Japan. A delivery before 5 March 2020 was classified as a before-pandemic delivery (n = 135), and a delivery after 6 March 2020 was a during-pandemic delivery (n = 349). Among the ten breastfeeding support steps recommended by the WHO, we assessed the five steps that are measurable by maternal self-report and would likely exhibit variability. Receipt of a free formula sample or invitation to a free sample campaign by the time of survey was also asked. Infant feeding status at the time of the survey was measured among women with infants younger than 5 months, which was a subgroup of mothers who delivered during the pandemic. Mothers were asked what was given to infants during the 24 h before the survey and when nothing other than breast milk was given, the status was classified as exclusive breastfeeding. Results: While 82.2% of women with a delivery before the pandemic intended to breastfeed, the rate was 75.6% during the pandemic (p = 0.120). The average number of breastfeeding support steps received was 3.24 before the pandemic but it was 3.01 during the pandemic (p = 0.069). In particular, rooming-in was less frequent (39.3% before vs. 27.8% during the pandemic, p = 0.014). Among mothers with infants younger than 5 months who had a delivery during the pandemic (n = 189), only 37.0% (n = 70) reported exclusively breastfeeding during the 24 h before completing the survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis indicated that receiving support for all five steps was positively associated with exclusive breastfeeding during the 24 h before the survey (adjusted odds ratio 4.51; 95% CI [1.50-13.61]). Receipt of a free formula sample or invitation to a free sample campaign was negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding (adjusted odds ratio 0.43; 95% CI [0.19-0.98]). Other factors related to non-exclusive breastfeeding were older maternal age, lower education level, primiparity, and no breastfeeding intention. Conclusions: The pandemic weakened breastfeeding support for healthy women in Japan; however, support practice that adhered to WHO recommendations appeared to be effective during the pandemic.
Postnatal women's breastfeeding beliefs, practices, and support during the COVID-19 pandemic: a cross-sectional comparative study across five countries

Abstract:Background: Women with COVID-19 experienced numerous concerns and doubts about the safety of breastfeeding their babies, and lack of support may have impacted breastfeeding practices. This study aims to compare breastfeeding beliefs, practices, and contact with healthcare professionals regarding the level of postnatal feeding support provided during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Methods: A multi-country cross-sectional study was conducted with postnatal women in five countries. Women up to six months postpartum were invited to complete an online survey concerning the transmission of preventative measures, beliefs toward breastfeeding, infant feeding practices in the last 24 hours and experiences of postnatal infant feeding support between July to November 2021. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed to identify the association. Results: Of the 3,253 eligible responses received, 39.5% of children were aged between one and two months, but in Taiwan (36%) and South Korea (42.8%) they were between three and four months. The mean of the belief score was significantly different among countries (p < 0.0001). Women in Brazil and the UK had a higher rate of breastfeeding at the breast (90.7% and 85.4%, respectively) compared to the three Asian countries (p < 0.0001) while feeding with expressed breastmilk in Thailand (59.9%), Taiwan (52.6%), and South Korea (50.4%) was higher than the others (p < 0.0001). Brazil and UK mothers (mean = 16.0 and 14.5 respectively) had a higher mean score for belief toward breastfeeding during the COVID-19 than the others. These results are inversely associated with breastfeeding but positively related to formula feeding practice. Postnatal feeding support during the COVID-19 pandemic was mainly provided by healthcare professionals (67.1%) and peers / family through face-to-face personal contact (51.6%) in all countries. Conclusion: Some differences were found in breastfeeding beliefs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Asian countries. A positive breastfeeding belief was associated with the practice of breastfeeding at the breast. Women from all countries received postpartum infant feeding support from health professionals and peers / family through personal contacts. Governments need to emphasize and disseminate the importance of breastfeeding safety, especially in Asian countries.

Abstract:Background: Breast milk is the best nutrition for most infants, and current recommendations encourage mothers to keep giving breast milk during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subjects and Method: This is an analytic cross-sectional study involving mothers giving birth since March 2020 and their infants aged under 6 months. An online-based questionnaire, including the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF), was distributed through social media from April to September 2020. The dependent variable was exclusive breastfeeding rate, and the independent variables were BSES-SF score, mother working status, educational level, place of birth, birth method, and COVID-19 status. Results: There were 113 respondents, and the rate of exclusive breastfeeding was 79.6%. Self-efficacy score in mothers who give exslusive breastfeeding (Mean= 58.4; SD= 0.8) was higher than non exclusive breastfeeding (Mean= 44.8; SD= 13.4) and it was statisfically significant (p <0.001). Conclusion: This study showed that during the COVID-19 pandemic exclusive breastfeeding rate might remain high in populartions with good breastfeeding self-efficacy. Abstract:Congenitally blind adults' performance in spatial and nonspatial peripheral auditory attention tasks was compared with that of sighted adults in a paradigm manipulating location-based and frequency-based inhibition of return concurrently. Blind study participants responded faster in spatial attention tasks (detection/localization) and slower in the nonspatial frequency discrimination task than sighted participants. Both groups, however, showed the same patterns of interaction between location-based and frequency-based inhibition of return. These results suggest that early vision deprivation enhances the function of the posterior-dorsal auditory ‘where’ pathway but impairs the function of the anterior-ventral ‘what’ pathway during peripheral auditory attention. The altered processing speed in the blind, however, is not accompanied by alteration in attentional orienting mechanisms that may be localized to higher cortices.
Experiences of breastfeeding during COVID-19: Lessons for future practical and emotional support

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown and social distancing led to changes to breastfeeding support available to women in the United Kingdom. Face-to-face professional support was reduced, and face-to-face peer support was cancelled. Anecdotal media accounts highlighted practices separating some mothers and babies in hospitals, alongside inaccurate stories of the safety of breastfeeding circulating. Meanwhile, new families were confined to their homes, separated from families and support networks. Given that we know breastfeeding is best supported by practices that keep mother and baby together, high-quality professional and peer-to-peer support, and positive maternal well-being, it is important to understand the impact of the pandemic upon the ability to breastfeed. To explore this, we conducted an online survey with 1219 breastfeeding mothers in the United Kingdom with a baby 0-12 months old to understand the impact of the pandemic upon breastfeeding duration, experiences and support. The results highlighted two very different experiences: 41.8% of mothers felt that breastfeeding was protected due to lockdown, but 27.0% of mothers struggled to get support and had numerous barriers stemming from lockdown with some stopped breastfeeding before they were ready. Mothers with a lower education, with more challenging living circumstances and from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds were more likely to find the impact of lockdown challenging and stop breastfeeding. The findings are vital in understanding how we now support those women who may be grieving their loss of breastfeeding and are affected by their negative experiences and how we can learn from those with a positive experience to make sure all breastfeeding women are better supported if similar future events arise.
Breastfeeding Rates During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Germany: Data from the CRONOS Registry

Abstract:SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease are thought to have an impact on breastfeeding rate – besides other known peripartal issues. Data of the national CRONOS registry regarding breastfeeding behavior in 6,746 women was analyzed regarding the time window between maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and time of delivery. In addition, other influencing factors like the predominant viral variant, maternal disease severity, and gestational age at delivery were taken into account. Our data suggest that within the variables analyzed, in the case of acute maternal infection (<14 days before birth), breastfeeding behavior improved with increasing gestational age at birth (p<0.0001), with less severe maternal illness (p<0.0001) and as the pandemic progressed with less virulent viral variants (p=0.01). When adjusting for COVID-19-associated and non-associated factors, rooming-in remains the most important factor positively influencing breastfeeding behavior. With regards to the benefits for mother and infants from breastfeeding, a separation of mother and child even in case of infectious settings should be avoided. Neben anderen peripartalen Faktoren, wird davon ausgegangen, dass SARS-CoV-2 und eine COVID-19-Erkrankung einen Einfluss auf die Stillrate haben. Daten des nationalen CRONOS-Registers zum Stillverhalten von 6.746 in der Schwangerschaft mit SARS-CoV-2 infizierten Frauen wurden im Hinblick auf das Zeitfenster zwischen mütterlicher Infektion und dem Zeitpunkt der Entbindung analysiert. Außerdem wurden weitere Einflussfaktoren wie die vorherrschende Virusvariante, der mütterliche Krankheitsschweregrad und das Gestationsalter bei der Geburt berücksichtigt. Unsere Daten deuten darauf hin, dass sich innerhalb der analysierten Variablen das Stillverhalten im Falle einer akuten mütterlichen Infektion (<14 Tage vor der Geburt) mit zunehmendem Gestationsalter bei der Geburt (p <0,0001), mit einer weniger schweren mütterlichen Erkrankung (p <0,0001) und mit dem Fortschreiten der Pandemie mit weniger virulenten Virusvarianten (p=0,01) verbessert. Wenn man die mit COVID-19 assoziierten und nicht assoziierten Faktoren berücksichtigt, bleibt das Rooming-in der wichtigste Faktor, der das Stillverhalten positiv beeinflusst. Im Hinblick auf die Vorteile des Stillens für Mutter und Kind sollte eine Trennung von Mutter und Kind auch im Falle einer Infektion möglichst vermieden werden. The Impact of COVID-19 on Breastfeeding Initiation and Duration in a Low-Income Population, Washington, DC

Abstract:Objective: To assess the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on breastfeeding initiation (BFI) and duration among women enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for women, infants, and children (WIC) in Washington District of Columbia (DC). Materials and Methods: We used WIC program data from Washington DC to assess the pandemic's impact on BFI and duration among WIC recipients. t -Tests and unadjusted odds ratios compared breastfeeding outcomes before and during the pandemic. Multivariable logistic and linear regression models estimated the pandemic's impact on initiation and duration, respectively, while controlling for social determinants of health and other factors. Results: BFI was similar among women who gave birth before (61.4%) or during the pandemic (60.4%) ( p = 0.359). However, the proportion of women who breastfed at 1 month decreased significantly from 56.1% (before pandemic) to 47.6% (during pandemic) ( p < 0.0001). This pattern for duration continued at 3 and 6 months: 46.9% to 37.1% ( p < 0.0001) at 3 months and 34.8% to 25.7% ( p < 0.0001) at 6 months. On average, women who delivered during the pandemic breastfed 33.9 fewer days than those who delivered before ( p < 0.0001). Conclusions: BFI among DC WIC recipients was similar for infants born before or during the pandemic, and determinants of initiation remained similar to previous reports (e.g., race/ethnicity, education). However, for women who initiated breastfeeding, average duration was significantly lower for infants born during the pandemic than before. Our findings suggest the importance of leveraging WIC and other breastfeeding supports to promote breastfeeding during pandemics and other emergencies.

Abstract:Rats receiving a single dose (10 mg/100 g) of aminonucleoside of puromycin (PAN) develop heavy proteinuria and acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). Whole isolated glomeruli from rats injected with PAN secreted both TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta cytokines. TNF-alpha secretion was first and maximally detected on day 3, whereas IL-beta activity was found on day 7, when rats were heavily proteinuric and AIN developed. In vivo treatment with either anti-TNF-alpha or anti-IL-1 beta antibodies produced a drastic and simultaneous reduction in both levels of proteinuria and intensity of interstitial cell infiltrate. These effects improved when both antibodies were administered together. Our studies demonstrate the effectiveness of immunosuppressive therapy against these two cytokines in rats with PAN-induced nephrosis.
Misalignment of global COVID-19 breastfeeding and newborn care guidelines with World Health Organization recommendations

Abstract:Introduction Recommendations for the clinical management of new mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 and their infants are required. Guidance must weigh the risk posed by transmission of SARS-CoV-2 against the protection that maternal proximity and breastfeeding provide infants. Our aim was to review international COVID-19 guidance for maternal and newborn care, assessing alignment with WHO recommendations and the extent to which policy supported or undermined breastfeeding. Methods Guidance documents from 33 countries on the care of infants whose mothers were suspected or confirmed as having COVID-19 were assessed for alignment with WHO recommendations regarding: (1) skin-to-skin contact; (2) early initiation of breastfeeding; (3); rooming-in; (4) direct breastfeeding; (5) provision of expressed breastmilk; (6) provision of donor human milk; (7) wet nursing; (8) provision of breastmilk substitutes; (9) psychological support for separated mothers; and (10) psychological support for separated infants. Results Considerable inconsistency in recommendations were found. Recommendations against practices supportive of breastfeeding were common, even in countries with high infant mortality rates. None of the guidance documents reviewed recommended all aspects of WHO guidance. The presence of influential guidance conflicting with WHO recommendations and an undervaluing of the importance of maternal proximity and breastfeeding to infant health appeared to contribute to this poor alignment. Conclusion Those developing guidance in the COVID-19 pandemic and other infectious disease outbreaks need to appropriately consider the importance of skin-to-skin contact, early initiation of breastfeeding, rooming-in and breastfeeding to maternal and infant physical and psychological health. In weighing the value of recommendations of others in future guidance development, countries should consider past reliability and value placed on breastfeeding. Recommendations against maternal proximity and breastfeeding should not be made without compelling evidence that they are necessary, and less harmful than maintaining dyad integrity.
Changes in Breastfeeding and Related Maternity Care Practices After Hurricanes Irma and Maria in Puerto Rico

Abstract:Background: Breastfeeding is recommended globally for most infants, especially during and after natural disasters when risk of adverse outcomes increases because of unsanitary conditions and lack of potable water. Materials and Methods: Using 2017-2019 data from Puerto Rico's Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System for 2,448 respondents with a recent live birth, we classified respondents into 4 hurricane exposure time periods based on infant birth month and year relative to when Hurricanes Irma and Maria occurred: (1) prehurricane; (2) acute hurricane; (3) posthurricane, early recovery; and (4) posthurricane, long-term recovery. We examined the association between maternity care practices during delivery hospitalization and exclusive breastfeeding at 3 months overall and stratified by time period. We also examined the associations between each maternity care practice and exclusive breastfeeding separately by time period. Results: Exclusive breastfeeding at 3 months was higher during the acute hurricane time period (adjusted prevalence ratio [aPR]: 1.43, 95% confidence interval: 1.09-1.87) than the prehurricane time period. Supportive maternity care practices were positively associated with exclusively breastfeeding, and practices that are risk factors for discontinuing breastfeeding were negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in the first hour (aPR range: 1.51-1.92) and rooming-in (aPR range: 1.50-2.58) were positively associated with exclusive breastfeeding across all time periods, except the prehurricane time period. Receipt of a gift pack with formula was negatively associated with exclusive breastfeeding (aPR range: 0.22-0.54) across all time periods. Conclusions: Maternity care practices during delivery hospitalization may influence breastfeeding behaviors and can improve breastfeeding during and after natural disasters. Strategies to maintain and improve these practices can be further supported during and after natural disasters.

Abstract:Background: Rates of exclusive breastfeeding in China are relatively low and below national targets. The aim of this study was to document the factors that influence exclusive breastfeeding initiation in Zhejiang, PR China.Methods: A cohort study of infant feeding practices was undertaken in Zhejiang Province, an eastern coastal region of China. A total of 1520 mothers who delivered in four hospitals located in city, suburb and rural areas during late 2004 to 2005 were enrolled in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to explore factors related to exclusive breastfeeding initiation.Results: On discharge from hospital, 50.3% of the mothers were exclusively breastfeeding their infants out of 96.9% of the mothers who had earlier initiated breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding was positively related to vaginal birth, baby's first feed being breast milk, mother living in the suburbs or rural areas, younger age of mother, lower maternal education level and family income.Conclusion: The exclusive breastfeeding rate in Zhejiang is only 50.3% on discharge and does not reach Chinese or international targets. A number of behaviours have been identified in the study that could be potentially incorporated into health promotion activities.
The Impact of Socio-Demographic Factors on Breastfeeding: Findings from the “Mamma & Bambino” Cohort

Abstract:Background and objectives: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends women (1) to initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth; (2) to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months; and (3) to continue breastfeeding until two years of age. However, women do not always adhere to these recommendations, threatening the health of their children. The present study aims to evaluate breastfeeding status and the main maternal factors associated with exclusive breastfeeding for six months among women from the “Mamma & Bambino” study, a prospective cohort settled in Catania, Italy. Materials and Methods: We used data from 220 women (median age = 37 years) enrolled in the “Mamma & Bambino” cohort during prenatal obstetric counselling. Self-reported breastfeeding status was collected during the follow-up interviews at 1 and 2 years, referring to breastfeeding status (i.e., yes or no) and type of breastfeeding (i.e., exclusive or predominant). We also collected data about duration of breastfeeding to classify women into those who adhered to the WHO recommendation and those who did not. Results: In the general population, we noted that the proportion of women who have breastfed increased with increasing educational level. Accordingly, logistic regression analysis demonstrated that medium (OR = 3.171; 95% CI = 1.285–7.822; p = 0.012) and high educational levels (OR = 4.549; 95% CI = 1.525–13.570; p = 0.007) were positively associated with breastfeeding if compared to low educational level. Among women who have breastfed, instead, the proportion of adherents to the WHO recommendation was higher among those with medium–high educational level and those who were employed. In line with this, we demonstrated that full-time employment (OR = 2.158; 95% CI = 1.033–4.508; p = 0.041) and medium educational level (OR = 4.632; 95% CI = 1.227–17.484; p = 0.024) were positively associated with exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Conclusions: Socio-demographic factors should be taken into account through public health strategies for improving maternal knowledge about health benefits of exclusive breastfeeding.

Abstract:Background: Breastmilk is the optimal source of nutrition for infants, particularly preterm infants. Preterm infants face unique feeding challenges and these change with the birth gestation of the infant. Preterm infants' feeding outcomes may have been affected differently than term infants by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The objective of this study was to describe the feeding trajectories of preterm infants in the first 6 months of life compared with term infants and compare these across prepandemic and pandemic periods. Methods: Data were extracted from the 2010 UK Infant Feeding Survey and the English National Maternity Surveys of 2018 and 2020. Original survey weights were used. Infants were divided by gestation into term (37+0 to 42+6 weeks' postmenstrual age), late preterm (34+0 to 36+6 weeks' postmenstrual age) and a lower gestation group (23+0 to 33+6 weeks' postmenstrual age). Modified Poisson regression, log-rank tests and survival curves were used to analyse feeding outcomes by gestational age. Results: Late preterm infants had lower adjusted relative risk (aRR) of exclusive breastmilk at 6 weeks of age compared with term infants in 2010 and 2020 but not in 2018. In 2010, aRR was 0.47 (95% CI 0.29 to 0.74), in 2018 aRR was 0.86 (95% CI 0.67 to 1.10) and in 2020 aRR was 0.57 (95% CI 0.41 to 0.81). There was no evidence of differences in feeding outcomes between infants born less than 34 weeks' postmenstrual age and term infants. Conclusion: Late preterm infants had worse breastfeeding outcomes than term infants in 2010, but the inequity was reduced or eliminated in 2018. In 2020, during the early SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, the inequity had re-emerged. Late preterm infants appear to be a particularly vulnerable population in relation to breast feeding. In future emergencies and natural disasters, late preterm infants should receive additional focus and resources to support breastfeeding establishment.
