Abstract:China has recorded positive growth rates of grain production for the past eleven consecutive years. This is a remarkable accomplishment given that China’s rapid industrialization and urbanization has led to a vast reduction of arable land and agricultural labor to non-agricultural sectors. While there are many factors contributing to this happy outcome, one potential contributing factor that has received increasing attention is the emergence of agricultural production outsourcing, a new rural institution that has emerged in recent years. This study aims to contribute to the limited but growing literature on agricultural production outsourcing in China. Specifically, this study analyzes factors affecting farmers’ decisions to outsource any or some production tasks using data from rice farmers in Zhejiang province. Results from a logistic model show that farm size and government subsidy encourages farmers to outsource while ownership of agricultural machines and land fragmentation have negative effects on farmers’ decisions to outsource production tasks. Results also showed that determinants of outsourcing decisions vary with the production tasks that farmers outsourced.
Do Outsourcing Services Provided by Agricultural Cooperatives Affect Technical Efficiency? Insights from Tobacco Farmers in China

Abstract:In this study, we assess whether household outsourcing production tasks provided by tobacco cooperatives affect household technical efficiency, using the survey data from 449 households in Guizhou Province, China in 2014. The one-step estimation of the stochastic frontier production function is employed. We also use the instrumental variable approach to address the potential selection biases that may arise from unobserved factors that are correlated with both outsourcing service adoption and technical efficiency. The empirical results show that the farmers' decision to outsource agricultural services provided by cooperatives has a positive effect on technical efficiency. The effects of outsourcing on technical efficiency are highly heterogeneous at different production stages. It is also interesting to note that the magnitudes of outsourcing effects on technical efficiency are similar between labor-intensive services and technology-intensive services.
The effects of agricultural machinery services and land fragmentation on farmers' straw returning behavior

Abstract:Straw returning is important for rural ecological management and sustainable agricultural development. Using farm survey data for Anhui Province, China, in 2020, we applied the double‐hurdle model to investigate the impact of agricultural machinery services and land fragmentation on farmers' straw‐returning behavior, and to explore the relationship between agricultural machinery self‐service and outsourced service. Self‐service had a significant positive effect on farmers' straw‐returning behavior, while outsourced service had a significant positive effect only on degree of adoption. Land fragmentation had a significant negative effect on farmers' straw‐returning behavior, and significantly inhibited the effect of self‐service on adoption decision. Complementarity existed between self‐service and outsourced service in farmers' straw‐returning adoption decision, and the effect was more pronounced among smaller‐scale farmers. There was significant substitutability between self‐service and outsourced service in degree of adoption among larger‐scale farmers. Transfer and integration of rural land, increasing agricultural machinery purchase subsidy, upgrading farmers' self‐service capability, and promoting development of socialized agricultural machinery services should be implemented to promote crop straw returning. Abstract:Increasing food output while reducing agricultural carbon emissions (ACE) is a major challenge to achieving green agriculture in China. Previously unexplored research regarding the relationship between agricultural production outsourcing services (APOS) and ACE is investigated using household microsurvey data in China and econometric methods, and the influencing mechanism is also tested empirically. The results reveal that APOS increases the total ACE and reduces ACE per unit area. The mechanism test shows that APOS are beneficial to the expansion of rice planting areas and farmers' adoption of agricultural green production techniques. The increasing effect of rice planting area on ACE was greater than the decreasing effect of green production techniques. In the future, China should accelerate the selection and breeding of rice varieties with low carbon emissions to reduce the increase of ACE caused by large-scale land management in the process of APOS development. Policy support and subsidies should be strengthened for APOS organizations to purchase green production techniques, so as to further drive farmers to adopt green production techniques and reduce ACE. It is also necessary for China to encourage small-scale farmers to outsource their agricultural production activities to APOS organizations. The role of collective action consciousness of agricultural production in increasing the supply capacity of APOS organizations should be enhanced.

Abstract:This study examines the economic and environmental impacts of green production practices among farmers. It aims to contribute to sustainable agricultural development, mitigate agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution, and align environmental protection with economic growth. This paper utilizes survey data from 1345 farm households in the main rice production areas of Jiangxi Province, China, using the example of reduced fertilizer application (RFA) among rice farmers. This study constructs a slack-based measure data envelopment analysis (DEA—SBM) model with undesirable outputs to measure environmental effects and applies an endogenous switching regression model (ESRM) to test the economic and environmental effects of farmers' adoption of green production technologies. We found the following: (1) The RFA behavior of farmers has a significant positive impact on their net profit per hectare (NPH), helping farmers increase their income, with the increase ranging from 2.05% to 6.54%. (2) Farmers' RFA behavior has a significant positive impact on agricultural green productivity (AGP), contributing to the improvement of the environment, ranging from 44.09% to 45.35%. (3) A heterogeneity analysis found inconsistencies in the income-enhancing and environmental-enhancing effects at different quantiles of NPH and AGP. Therefore, attention should be placed on improving the agricultural product quality supervision system under the market circulation mechanism, creating land scale conditions conducive to the promotion and application of fertilizer reduction technologies and promoting the implementation of externality internalization compensation systems.

Abstract:Sustainable development is crucial for alleviating poverty among farmers. In this study, we examined the impact, and the mechanism underlying this impact, of the adoption of agricultural machinery services by farmers on their relative poverty from a multidimensional poverty perspective by employing the logit and ordered logit models and the Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method. These results indicate that adopting agricultural machinery services can significantly reduce the probability of relative poverty among farmers, thereby expediting the sustainability of rural development. However, this poverty-reduction effect varies based on age and sex. The adoption of agricultural machinery services mainly reduces poverty by increasing farmers' human capital. Training in employment skills and non-agricultural work experience are the main transmission mechanisms. Therefore, the socialization of agricultural machinery services can be used as an effective policy tool to reduce relative poverty in developing countries, promote sustained improvements in farmers' incomes, and achieve sustainability in rural development.

Abstract:With the deepening of China's agricultural labor division, the rapid development of agricultural machinery service has had a profound impact on farmland scale management. Based on the new classical economic and transaction cost theories, this paper investigates the impact mechanism of agricultural machinery service on farmers' farmland transfer-in decision from the dual perspectives of transaction cost and benefit of labor division, and uses the national rural survey data on the Chinese Family Database to conduct empirical research by using the ordinary least square (OLS) model and limited information maximum likelihood (LIML) method. The study finds that, first, agricultural machinery service expands farmers' farmland transfer-in decision by encouraging them to obtain the economic efficiency of labor division. Not only agricultural machinery service can alleviate the constraint of farmers' farmland transfer in labor and capital but also reduce the service transaction cost and increase farmers' share of the division of labor economy, which further stimulates farmers to expand the scale of management. Second, with the deepening of labor division of agricultural machinery services, the higher transaction efficiency of agricultural machinery service promotes farmers' farmland transfer-in participation. As long as the marginal net benefit obtained is greater than zero, farmers have incentives to expand the scale of farmland. Therefore, in order to promote China's farmland scale management, the professional, whole-process, and large-scale development of agricultural machinery services should be further promoted, and the service capacity and fields should be expanded so that outsourcing services can be better provided to agricultural production demanders. At the same time, the technical standards, supervision system, and service platform of agricultural machinery should be established and improved so as to enhance the bargaining position of farmers in service outsourcing transactions, thus promoting the development of agricultural division of labor to a higher level and realizing the mutual promotion and mutual benefit of agricultural machinery service subjects and agricultural land scale management subjects.

Abstract:Purpose Previous studies focused on the influence of outsourcing (labor division) on productivity, especially in the industrial economy. However, few studies have focused on how labor division in agriculture affects agricultural productivity. To bridge this gap, this study uses survey data from 4864 farmer households in China to explore the impacts of outsourcing on agricultural productivity. Design/methodology/approach This study employs an endogenous switching regression to account for selection bias and a counterfactual framework to measure the degree of influence. Thus, this study analyzes determinants of outsourcing and the impacts of outsourcing on agricultural productivity under the same framework. Findings The results revealed the following. (1) Farmer households with the below average productivity tended to outsource; conversely, farmer households with the above average productivity tended to cultivate the land by themselves. (2) Productivity increased by 25.61% for farmer households who choose to outsource. Moreover, if nonoutsourcing farmer households would choose to outsource, their productivity would increase by 10.86%. Originality/value This study furthers one’s understanding of how outsourcing affects agricultural productivity among farmer households.

Abstract:This study is devoted to analyzing the effects of outsourcing machinery-intensive farming activities vis-à-vis using mechanized equipment in-house on pesticide use, utilizing cross-sectional data collected from rice farmers in Jiangsu province, China. The control function approach is utilized to address the endogeneity of the decision to outsource pesticide application or complete the task in-house. Our results suggest that outsourcing pesticide application decreases pesticide expenditure but in-house application using mechanized equipment increases it. Specifically, outsourcing pesticide application reduces pesticide expenditure by about 81 yuan per mu or around 0.18 yuan per kilogram of rice produced. In comparison, the in-house application using mechanized equipment increases pesticide expenditure by 118 yuan per mu or by 0.14 yuan per kilogram of rice output. We also find that both outsourcing and in-house pesticide applications increase rice yield.

Do Green Production Technologies Improve Household Income? Evidence from Rice Farmers in China

Abstract:Revealing the behavioral decision-making mechanism and behavioral effects of farmers adopting green production technologies will help motivate farmers to actively adopt green production technologies, thereby promoting the development of green agriculture. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 607 Chinese rice farmers, while the endogenous switching regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors and behavioral effects of farmers adopting green production technologies. The results show that the adoption of green production technologies by farmers can significantly increase household income. Among the green production technologies, soil testing and formula fertilization technology has the greatest impact on farmers' income, followed by straw returning technology and planting green manure. The main influencing factors of farmers adopting green production technologies are education level, cultivated land area, cultivated land fragmentation, soil fertility, and the distance between home and agricultural technology stations. The results of this study provide an empirical basis for relevant government departments to carry out agricultural technology extension work and formulate relevant policies.

Abstract:Introduction: This study investigates the impact of Agricultural Socialized Services (ASSs) on the green production behavior (GPB) of smallholder farmers in the main rice production region of southern China. The research aims to address the gap in understanding the relationship between ASSs and the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices by smallholder farmers. Methodology: Data was collected from 741 smallholder farmers in Hunan, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces using a structured questionnaire. A probit model was employed to examine the relationship between ASSs and smallholder farmers' GPB. Results and Discussion: The study revealed that ASSs have a significant and positive impact on smallholder farmers' GPB. Farmers who received ASSs tended to adopt more sustainable agricultural practices such as using organic fertilizer and soil-tested formula fertilizer. The findings of this study have important implications for policymakers. The results suggest that policymakers should prioritize the development of services to agricultural producers and strengthen Agricultural Service Systems. This can be achieved through optimizing the public administration service system, establishing joint service organizations, and creating a good financial and legal service environment. By doing so, policymakers can promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and the overall development of the agricultural sector.

Abstract:Many researchers argue that the adoption of agricultural mechanization services (AMSs) is an important way for smallholder farmers in China to engage in modern agricultural production. However, the impact of the adoption mode of agricultural machinery on food productivity remains under-analyzed. We investigate the links between the adoption mode of agricultural machinery and food productivity using data on 795 grain farmers collected from the North China Plain. The results indicate that, compared with service outsourcing (SO), self-purchase (SP) improves the technical efficiency of farms; however, it reduces the input efficiency of agricultural machinery. The channel of the effect is that, although SO can reduce the redundancy of agricultural machinery's input, the opportunistic behavior of AMS suppliers and labor supervision problems lead to a decline in agricultural machinery's operation quality. The impact of the adoption mode of agricultural machinery on food productivity is asymmetrical among different types of farmers. Large-scale and professional farmers benefit more from SP, whereas small-scale and part-time farmers benefit more from SO. The AMS is not perfect, and the Chinese government should pay close attention to the loss of technical efficiency in agricultural production caused by the opportunistic behavior of AMS suppliers. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the agricultural machinery subsidy policy and reduce the transaction cost of AMS.

Abstract:Agricultural production outsourcing service (APOS) are developing rapidly in China. In-depth research on whether the development of agricultural production outsourcing service can reduce agricultural non-point source pollution (ANSP) and the influencing mechanisms is still lacking. This study analyze the underlying mechanisms and empirically estimate the impact of agricultural production outsourcing service on agricultural non-point source pollution, explore the effect of land fragmentation on the relationship between them, and further empirically test these relationships with microsurvey data on farmers in China. The results reveal that agricultural production outsourcing service are negatively correlated with excess nitrogen and chemical fertilizer input. Agricultural production outsourcing service use can reduce excess nitrogen and an increase in the number of plots of land leads to an increase in excess nitrogen, and lower the negative effect of agricultural production outsourcing service on excess nitrogen. Agricultural production outsourcing service affect excess nitrogen by reducing farmers' input of chemical fertilizers and increasing their adoption of green agricultural production technology. In the future, China should vigorously promote the development of agricultural production outsourcing service organizations, improve the standardization of outsourcing services to expand the scale of agricultural production outsourcing service. The government should also strengthen policy support for the construction of field roads, water conservation and irrigation, and should strive to centrally manage scattered land. It is necessary to encourage small-scale farmers to outsource agricultural production activities to the service organizations, thus reducing the negative effect of land fragmentation and increasing the positive effect of agricultural production outsourcing service in reducing agricultural non-point source pollution.

Abstract:Promoting green agricultural production is becoming increasingly important in order to address resource and environmental issues and meet consumers’ demand for safe agricultural products. Green agriculture mainly refers to the adoption of green, smart agriculture technologies in agricultural production. Farmers are the main body of agricultural production, so guiding farmers to adopt green, smart agriculture technologies is of great significance for safeguarding the ecological environment. However, due to the combined influence of internal and external factors, the current level of adoption of green, smart agriculture technologies by farmers is not high. Contract farming can have an impact on farmers’ production behavior through various channels, such as guiding and standardizing production, and may become an internal driving force for improving the adoption of green, smart agriculture technologies. How do farmers make contract farming selection decisions? How does the choice of contract farming affect farmers’ adoption of green, smart agriculture technologies? Further research on the above issues can provide useful references for promoting the development of green agriculture and ensuring the quality of agricultural products in China. Against this backdrop, this paper, using research data about rice farmers in the Jiangsu Province of China, adopted a gradual regression method for checking the mediating and moderating effects to discover the mechanism of how contract farming influences rice farmers’ choice of green, smart agriculture technologies. The research results showed that: (1) contract farming has an evidently positive influence on farmers’ choice of green, smart agriculture technologies; (2) the high ecological value standard plays a complete mediating role in the process of contract farming influencing farmers’ choice of green, smart agriculture technologies; and (3) the moderating effect of planting rice income exists and is significant. When the income from cultivation is high, the positive relationship between the high ecological value standard and farmers’ choice of green, smart agriculture technologies is strengthened. Income from rice cultivation does have a moderating effect. Therefore, the government can actively guide farmers to participate in contract farming by increasing its publicity and support of contract farming. The implementation of the high ecological value standard in contract farming should be refined. The government should complete the mechanism for selling quality agricultural products at good prices. Contract farming can make farmers and corporations involved have deep cooperation, increase the non-agricultural income of farmers, and further enhance the overall income of their households. Through these measures, the development of green agriculture can be achieved.

Abstract:Agricultural green production is vital for ensuring product quality, safety, and mitigating environmental issues. E-commerce operations have emerged as a key driver of green production transformation. Based on a sample of 704 farm households in Jiangsu Province, this study employs a two-way fixed-effects model, Propensity Score Matching (PSM), Instrumental Variable Probit (IVProbit), and Extended Regression Model (ERM) to address endogeneity, alongside stepwise regression to test the mediating role of technology cognition. The results show that e-commerce operations significantly and positively influence the adoption of green production technologies among farmers, with technology cognition acting as a positive mediator. The impact of e-commerce on technology adoption varied across different age groups and geographical terrains, with older farmers and those in plain regions benefiting the most. Additionally, e-commerce played a crucial role in the adoption of green technologies, particularly in the use of organic fertilizers. To promote the broader adoption of green technologies among farmers, it is recommended that governments strengthen e-commerce support systems, enhance technical training for farmers, improve the inclusivity of e-commerce platforms, and address gaps in the availability of green production technologies.
Role of self-actualization in green production behavior: Evidence from rice smallholders in China

Abstract:Understanding who adopt green production and why they choose this strategy is an important issue that needs to be addressed in the context of increasingly severe agricultural pollution. Previous studies have generally investigated subsistence-oriented smallholders, typically employing profit maximization or risk minimization models. However, Chinese farmers have differentiated, and have unique characteristics. This study collected data from 960 random samples of rice farmers and conducted quantitative analysis. The findings reveal that 94.9 % of the farmers had less than 2-ha rice-planting area, and 80.21 % of farmers reported that their purpose of planting rice was for family self-feeding. Furthermore, the new standard to define smallholder based on whether their production purpose is self-feeding or selling and found that non-smallholders had an overall advantage and passed the t-test. Even more non-smallholder (76.32 %) intentionally chose green pesticide than smallholders (66.1 %), but their decision-making logic was different. Binary logistic regression results show that three aspects of self-actualization (environmental, market, and personal) positively and significantly affected the green production behavior of smallholders, but not significant for non-smallholders. This study suggests that in China, where smallholders are the mainstay of agriculture production, green production by smallholders will greatly improve the ecological environment and provide high quality agricultural products.
Farmland transfer contract performance and green production technology adoption among farmers: evidence from a survey of four provinces in China

Abstract:The popularization and use of green production technology is the key to promoting the sustainable development of agriculture. Exploring the path of promoting farmers' adoption of green production technology has important theoretical and practical significance for promoting the green transformation of agriculture and realizing the high-quality development of agriculture. This study examined the impact of contract performance on the adoption of green production technology in the farmland transfer market based on the characteristics of green production technology. An empirical test was conducted using survey data from Heilongjiang, Henan, Zhejiang, and Sichuan Provinces, which differ in agricultural resource endowment and economic development. The results demonstrated that farmland area was positively associated with the number of green production technologies adopted by farmers and use of straw returning, subsoiling, and soil testing for formula fertilization technology. Moreover, improving the performance rates of farmland transfer contracts strengthened the promotional effect of operation scale on green production technology adoption. Using either contract execution or dispute resolution rates to measure contract performance promoted the adoption of green production technology, particularly for large-scale farmers. Therefore, in the publicity and promotion of agricultural green production technology, the government should not only formulate differentiated promotion strategies and support policies based on resource endowment, but also focus on the construction of rural legal systems, which are helpful for building and maintaining a good farmland market order and performance environment, and create conditions for the durability and stability of technology adoption.

Abstract:Fertilizer and pesticide inputs (FPI) can provide the growth of wheat production while causing environmental pollution and agri-product quality decline. Agricultural production outsourcing has been introduced to solve the above-mentioned dilemmas. It is noteworthy whether agricultural production outsourcing can improve technical efficiency (TE) by optimizing resource allocation. The study aims to examine the effect of outsourcing of fertilization and pesticide application (OF and OPA) on TE. It also tests moderating effect of plot and contiguous cropping (CC) based on 1018 farmers from three provinces. The results demonstrated: (a) The cost OF and OPA had a negative and then positive impact on TE. (b) The moderating effects of plot and CC were tested. (c) Smaller-than-average groups were more sensitive to cost of the OF and OPA. The findings implied: (a) Negative effect of outsourcing can be mitigated by formulating a standard for application of fertilization and pesticide and developing an insurance market. Abstract:Agricultural green production (AGP) and efficiency improvement of smallholders’ management are the objective requirements for the development of China’s modernized agriculture and the understanding of the rural vitalization strategy. Based on field survey data of 582 rice farmers in Shaanxi Province, this study used the Logit model to analyze the determinants of smallholders’ adoption of agricultural green production technology (AGPT) and used the propensity score matching (PSM) method to measure the effect of AGPT on the technical efficiency (TE) of rice production and the heterogeneity of this influence among smallholders. Results showed that the AGPT adoption rate and the mean of rice production TE were 15.1% and 0.312, both had a lot of room for improvement. Furthermore, it was found that household’s characteristics, family characteristics, agricultural management characteristics, social characteristics, and cognitive characteristics significantly affect smallholders’ AGPT adoption, and the AGPT adoption significantly increased the TE of rice production by 18.8 to 24.5%. Besides, farmers with older age, less education, more specialized planting, more fragmented land, and more off-farm employment adopting AGPT could significantly improve the TE; the increase proportion was 29.8%, 29.5%, 21.3%, 27.2%, and 16.8%. The study also showed that the AGPT could not significantly increase the rice output value of smallholders. In addition, considering the endogeneity problem caused by sample selection bias, the study re-estimated using the endogenous transformation regression (ESR) model which showed that the promotion of AGPT to TE was still robust. The study puts forward policy recommendations on how to further promote the adoption of AGPT and improve the TE by farmers.

Abstract:Agricultural socialized service is gradually emerging as a new stimulus for enhancing the agricultural production environment. However, their precise impact on improving the agricultural ecological environment and promoting the green development of agriculture remains incompletely understood. Therefore, leveraging panel data spanning from 2003 to 2020 across 31 provinces in China, this study utilizes the bidirectional fixed effect model, moderating effect model, and spatial Durbin model to systematically assess the influence of agricultural socialized services on agricultural green development and its spatial ramifications. The findings show that (I) agricultural socialized services significantly contribute to promoting agricultural green development, particularly in regions with lower aging demographics. (II) The application of the spatial Durbin model reveals that this promotional effect does not exhibit significant spatial spillover effect. (III) The role of agricultural socialized services in fostering agricultural green development can be significantly enhanced by advancements in land transfer, agricultural technological innovations, and the improvement of rural human capital. In conclusion, the study provides a set of policy recommendations that include government financial support, facilitating land transfer, improving rural education and technical training, and promoting green production technologies to effectively promote agricultural green development.
