Abstract:Current rates of mental illness are worrisome. Mental illness mainly affects females and younger age groups. The use of the internet to deliver mental health care has been growing since 2020 and includes the implementation of novel mental health treatments using virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. A new three dimensional digital environment, known as the metaverse, has emerged as the next version of the Internet. Artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and virtual reality will create fully immersive, experiential, and interactive online environments in the metaverse. People will use a unique avatar to do anything they do in their “real” lives, including seeking and receiving mental health care. In this opinion review, we reflect on how the metaverse could reshape how we deliver mental health treatment, its opportunities, and its challenges.

Abstract:The landscape of psychiatry is ever evolving and has recently begun to be influenced more heavily by new technologies. One novel technology which may have particular application to psychiatry is the metaverse, a three-dimensional digital social platform accessed via augmented, virtual, and mixed reality (AR/VR/MR). The metaverse allows the interaction of users in a virtual world which can be measured and manipulated, posing at once exciting new possibilities and significant potential challenges and risks. While the final form of the nascent metaverse is not yet clear, the immersive simulation and holographic mixed reality-based worlds made possible by the metaverse have the potential to redefine neuropsychiatric care for both patients and their providers. While a number of applications for this technology can be envisioned, this article will focus on leveraging the metaverse in three specific domains: medical education, brain stimulation, and biofeedback. Within medical education, the metaverse could allow for more precise feedback to students performing patient interviews as well as the ability to more easily disseminate highly specialized technical skills, such as those used in advanced neurostimulation paradigms. Examples of potential applications in brain stimulation and biofeedback range from using AR to improve precision targeting of non-invasive neuromodulation modalities to more innovative practices, such as using physiological and behavioral measures derived from interactions in VR environments to directly inform and personalize treatment parameters for patients. Along with promising future applications, we also discuss ethical implications and data security concerns that arise when considering the introduction of the metaverse and related AR/VR technologies to psychiatric research and care.

Unlike traditional platforms, MR allows for therapy within the comfort of the user's familiar surroundings, while incorporating the benefits of social collaboration and interactions. The metaverse environment fosters heightened personalization and deeper user engagement, thereby offering a more tailored approach to computerized therapy. Beyond its immersive capabilities, MR offers potential for real-time, smart adaptations to the users' psycho-physiological state, targeting unique patients' needs on a diverse spectrum of therapeutic techniques, thus broadening the scope of mental health support. Furthermore, it opens avenues for continuous emotional support in everyday life situations. This research discusses the benefits and potentials of integrating MR within a mental health metaverse, highlighting how this innovative approach could significantly complement traditional therapeutic methods, fostering improved treatment efficacy, focusing on social and collective experiences, and increasing patient engagement.

Abstract:(1) Background: The metaverse is now a reality, and it interests the scientific community, the educational setting, and medical care. Considering the number of people in front of screens, especially children and adolescents, the metaverse could and should become a place of health promotion. Consequently, the objective of the present study was to review the current literature to detect articles that connected the metaverse with prevention and treatment, education and training, and research setting. (2) Methods: Articles were searched on Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus, including English-written papers published until 12 August 2022. They were screened against the eligibility criteria and discussed narratively. (3) Results: The literature published is poor; only 21 articles were included, and 11 of them were added in a second moment. These articles were mainly reviews of the literature or editorials. The aspects related to this virtual world in terms of health prevention and the treatment of clinical conditions, education and training, and research have been narratively discussed. (4) Conclusions: The metaverse could be considered a useful instrument to arrive easily and quickly to the population. Given its importance, today, different studies and investments are required to develop proper health promotion programs that are feasible and valid in the metaverse.

Abstract:What distinguishes real-world communities from their online counterparts? Social and cognitive neuroscience research on social networks and collective intentionality will be used in the article to answer this question. Physical communities are born in places. And places engage "we-mode" neurobiological and cognitive processes as behavioral synchrony, shared attention, deliberate attunement, interbrain synchronization, and so on, which create coherent social networks of very different individuals who are supported by a "wisdom of crowd." Digital technologies remove physical boundaries, giving people more freedom to choose their activities and groups. At the same time, however, the lack of physical co-presence of community members significantly reduces their possibility of activating "we-mode" cognitive processes and social motivation. Because of this, unlike physical communities that allow interaction between people from varied origins and stories, digital communities are always made up of people who have the same interests and knowledge (communities of practice). This new situation disrupts the "wisdom of crowd," making the community more radical and less accurate (polarization effect), allowing influential users to wield disproportionate influence over the group's beliefs, and producing inequalities in the distribution of social capital. However, a new emergent technology—the Metaverse—has the potential to reverse this trend. Several studies have revealed that virtual and augmented reality—the major technologies underlying the Metaverse—can engage the same neurobiological and cognitive "we-mode" processes as real-world environments. If the many flaws in this technology are fixed, it might encourage people to engage in more meaningful and constructive interactions in online communities.

Abstract:Introduction Metaverse technology is spurring a transformation in healthcare and has the potential to cause a disruptive shift in rehabilitation interventions. The technology will surely be a promising field offering new resources to improve clinical outcomes, compliance, sustainability, and patients' interest in rehabilitation. Despite the growing interest in technologies for rehabilitation, various barriers to using digital services may continue to perpetuate a digital divide. This article proposes a framework with five domains and elements to consider when designing and implementing Metaverse-based rehabilitation services to reduce potential inequalities and provide best patient care. Methods The framework was developed in two phases and was informed by previous frameworks in digital health, the Metaverse, and health equity. The main elements were extracted and synthesized via consultation with an interdisciplinary team, including a knowledge user. Results The proposed framework discusses equity issues relevant to assessing progress in moving toward and implementing the Metaverse in rehabilitation services. The five domains of the framework were identified as equity, health services integration, interoperability, global governance, and humanization. Discussion This article is a call for all rehabilitation professionals, along with other important stakeholders, to engage in developing an equitable, decentralized, and sustainable Metaverse service and not just be a spectator as it develops. Challenges and opportunities and their implications for future directions are highlighted.

Abstract:The Metaverse depicts a parallel digitalized world where virtuality and reality are fused. It has economic and social systems like those in the real world and provides intelligent services and applications. In this paper, we introduce the Metaverse from a new technology perspective, including its essence, corresponding technical framework, and potential technical challenges. Specifically, we analyze the essence of the Metaverse from its etymology and point out breakthroughs promising to be made in time, space, and contents of the Metaverse by citing Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Subsequently, we conclude four pillars of the Metaverse, named ubiquitous connections, space convergence, virtuality and reality interaction, and human-centered communication, and establish a corresponding technical framework. Additionally, we envision open issues and challenges of the Metaverse in the technical aspect. The work proposes a new technology perspective of the Metaverse and will provide further guidance for its technology development in the future. © 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

We are currently witnessing the emergence of a large immersive virtual environment called the "metaverse." Its emergence creates new and challenging opportunities in health care. This article explores some metaverse-related concepts, provides specific examples of its use in pediatrics, describes experiences in the hospital setting, and finally delves into the resulting challenges and opportunities.

'Being there together for health': A Systematic Review on the Feasibility, Effectiveness and Design Considerations of Immersive Collaborative Virtual Environments in Health Applications

Abstract:Effectively using immersive multi-user environments for digital applications (via virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies) beckons the future of healthcare delivery in the metaverse. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of these environments used in health applications, while identifying their design features. We systematically searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Emcare databases for peer-reviewed original reports, published in English, without date restrictions until Aug 30, 2023, and conducted manual citation searching in Feb 2024. All studies using fully immersive extended reality technologies (e.g., head-mounted displays, smart glasses) while engaging more than one participant in an intervention with direct health benefits were included. A qualitative synthesis of findings is reported. The quality of research was assessed using JBI Critical Checklists. The review was pre-registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023479155). Of 2862 identified records, 10 studies were eligible. Included studies were mostly conducted with healthy young adults (five studies) and older adults (four studies). While they all used different models of Oculus/Meta headsets, their environments' designs were distinctive and aligned with their objectives. Findings indicated varying degrees of positive health outcomes, for engagement in rehabilitation, meaningful interactions across distances, positive affect, transformative experiences, mental health therapies, and motor skill learning. Participants reported high usability, motivation, enjoyment, presence and copresence. They also expressed the need for more training time with technology. Adopting an intentional intervention design, considering factors affecting presence and copresence, as well as integrating co-creation of the program with participants, seems integral to achieving positive health outcomes.

Abstract:See Article, page 488 What is the metaverse? The term appeared for the first time in 1992 in the novel Snow Crash by the American, Boston-educated, science fiction writer Neal Stephenson. At present, an official and shared definition does not exist. In the Oxford English Dictionary, "metaverse" is defined as "a virtual reality (VR) space in which users can interact with an environment generated by computer and with other users." 1 It is a 3-dimensional transcendent infinite world, having a functional economy, connecting the physical world with the digital one. We must not make the mistake of confusing the metaverse with the technologies it exploits, such as VR; its main feature is to combine aspects of social media, online gaming, augmented reality (AR), VR, and cryptocurrencies (Table). There are already several active metaverses, each with its own peculiarities. Real jobs in the metaverse, such as tour operators or event managers, are already available. The metaverse is alive and circulates works of art and exclusive products. The metaverse is becoming more and more present; major institutional bodies are beginning to address this issue. Just 1 example: the European Parliamentary Research Service (EPRS) has drawn up an analysis on the possible risks and implications of the metaverse for the European Community. 2

Abstract:Over the last 20 years, virtual reality (VR) has been widely used to promote mental health in populations presenting different clinical conditions. Mental health does not refer only to the absence of psychiatric disorders but to the absence of a wide range of clinical conditions that influence people’s general and social well-being such as chronic pain, neurological disorders that lead to motor o perceptual impairments, psychological disorders that alter behaviour and social cognition, or physical conditions like eating disorders or present in amputees. It is known that an accurate perception of oneself and of the surrounding environment are both key elements to enjoy mental health and well-being, and that both can be distorted in patients suffering from the clinical conditions mentioned above. In the past few years, multiple studies have shown the effectiveness of VR to modulate such perceptual distortions of oneself and of the surrounding environment through virtual body ownership illusions. This narrative review aims to review clinical studies that have explored the manipulation of embodied virtual bodies in VR for improving mental health, and to discuss the current state of the art and the challenges for future research in the context of clinical care.

Abstract:The metaverse is a virtual world that is being developed to allow people to interact with each other and with digital objects in a more immersive way. It involves the convergence of three major technological trends: telepresence, the digital twin, and blockchain. Telepresence is the ability of people to "be together" in a virtual way while not being close to each other. The digital twin is a virtual, digital equivalent of a patient, a medical device or even a hospital. Blockchain can be used by patients to keep their personal medical records secure. In medicine and healthcare, the metaverse could be used in several ways: (1) virtual medical consultations; (2) medical education and training; (3) patient education; (4) medical research; (5) drug development; (6) therapy and support; (7) laboratory medicine. The metaverse has the potential to enable more personalized, efficient, and accessible healthcare, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. However, the implementation of the metaverse in medicine and healthcare will require careful consideration of ethical and privacy concerns, as well as social, technical and regulatory challenges. Overall, the future of the metaverse in healthcare looks bright, but new metaverse-specific laws should be created to help overcome any potential downsides.

Abstract:The metaverse integrates physical and virtual realities, enabling humans and their avatars to interact in an environment supported by technologies such as high-speed internet, virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed and extended reality, blockchain, digital twins and artificial intelligence (AI), all enriched by effectively unlimited data. The metaverse recently emerged as social media and entertainment platforms, but extension to healthcare could have a profound impact on clinical practice and human health. As a group of academic, industrial, clinical and regulatory researchers, we identify unique opportunities for metaverse approaches in the healthcare domain. A metaverse of 'medical technology and AI' (MeTAI) can facilitate the development, prototyping, evaluation, regulation, translation and refinement of AI-based medical practice, especially medical imaging-guided diagnosis and therapy. Here, we present metaverse use cases, including virtual comparative scanning, raw data sharing, augmented regulatory science and metaversed medical intervention. We discuss relevant issues on the ecosystem of the MeTAI metaverse including privacy, security and disparity. We also identify specific action items for coordinated efforts to build the MeTAI metaverse for improved healthcare quality, accessibility, cost-effectiveness and patient satisfaction.

Abstract:The metaverse has the potential to extend the physical world using augmented and virtual reality technologies allowing users to seamlessly interact within real and simulated environments using avatars and holograms. Virtual environments and immersive games (such as, Second Life, Fortnite, Roblox and VRChat) have been described as antecedents of the metaverse and offer some insight to the potential socio-economic impact of a fully functional persistent cross platform metaverse. Separating the hype and “meta…” rebranding from current reality is difficult, as “big tech” paints a picture of the transformative nature of the metaverse and how it will positively impact people in their work, leisure, and social interaction. The potential impact on the way we conduct business, interact with brands and others, and develop shared experiences is likely to be transformational as the distinct lines between physical and digital are likely to be somewhat blurred from current perceptions. However, although the technology and infrastructure does not yet exist to allow the development of new immersive virtual worlds at scale - one that our avatars could transcend across platforms, researchers are increasingly examining the transformative impact of the metaverse. Impacted sectors include marketing, education, healthcare as well as societal effects relating to social interaction factors from widespread adoption, and issues relating to trust, privacy, bias, disinformation, application of law as well as psychological aspects linked to addiction and impact on vulnerable people. This study examines these topics in detail by combining the informed narrative and multi-perspective approach from experts with varied disciplinary backgrounds on many aspects of the metaverse and its transformational impact. The paper concludes by proposing a future research agenda that is valuable for researchers, professionals and policy makers alike.

Abstract:The metaverse has entered people's horizons through virtual reality, digital twinning, the Internet of Things, blockchain technology, etc. In the current healthcare system, the management of chronic diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS), still faces challenges, such as uneven distribution of medical resources, and difficulty in follow-up, overburdening of specialists, and so on. However, metaverse medical platforms incorporating advanced AI technologies, such as industrial-scale digital twins, may address these issues. In this article, we discuss the application prospect of these technologies in digital medicine and the future of the medical metaverse.
