Abstract:The impact of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on microplastic (MP) occurrence in aquatic environments deserves an in-depth study. In this study, the occurrence of MPs and environmental flux of plastics before (2019) and during (2020 and 2021) the pandemic were comparatively investigated in various aquatic compartments in the Taihu Lake Basin in China. The field-based investigations from 2019 to 2021 for Taihu Lake have shown that, at the onset of the outbreak, the MP abundance declined at a rate of 62.3 %, but gradually recovered to the pre-pandemic level. However, the amount of plastics being released into aquatic environments showed a declining trend in 2020 and 2021 compared to those in 2019, with decrease rates of 13.7 % and 15.8 %, respectively. Characterization analysis of MP particles and source apportionment framework implied that while the contributions of tire abrasion and domestic waste to MP occurrence were depleted owing to the reduction in human activity during the pandemic, weathering and fragmentation of retained plastics contributed to the recovery of stored MPs. This study provides insights into the anthropogenic influences on MP occurrence, and supports policymakers in managing and controlling plastic contamination in large freshwater systems in the "new normal" phase.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants with significant ecological and human health implications. This study examines the abundance, characteristics, and distribution of MPs in the Yangtze River estuary, focusing on seasonal variations, tidal cycles, and anthropogenic influences. Surface samples were collected using the Manta trawl method to ensure consistency with previous marine MP research. The study found an average MP concentration of 1.01 (± 0.65) n m −3 , predominantly comprising low-density polymers such as polystyrene (38 %), polypropylene (33 %), and polyethylene (29 %). MPs were mainly fragments (34.9 %) and foam (30.7 %), with a prevalence of white particles. Seasonal analysis indicated significantly higher MP concentrations during flood seasons (1.32 ± 1.09 n m −3 ), nearly 1.9 times higher than during non-flood seasons (0.70 ± 0.28 n m −3 ). Tidal cycles also impacted MP distribution, with ebb tides showing increased concentrations (2.44 ± 1.30 n m −3 ) compared to flood tides (1.48 ± 2.07 n m −3 ). Furthermore, MP abundance showed a decreasing trend with increasing distance from urban centers, with significant correlations (0.52 < R 2 < 0.65, P < 0.001). These findings underscore the necessity for seasonally adjusted monitoring and robust management strategies to combat MP pollution. The study advocates for the integration of diverse sampling methods and the consideration of environmental factors in future MP assessments, laying the groundwork for understanding the MP transport mechanism in the Yangtze River estuary and similar estuarine systems worldwide.

Abstract:Estuaries and sewage outlets are key pathways for the transport of microplastics (MPs) from land to coastal waters. In this study, the spatiotemporal pattern, composition, and flux of MPs transported from land to Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) in the South China Sea were investigated. The results showed that the overall mean MP abundance (± standard deviation) was 17.99 ± 9.72 items/L, with the highest in the normal season, followed by the dry and wet seasons. Fibers were the most dominant shape in these samples, blue was the most common color, and most MPs ranged between 100 and 330 μm. The MP diversity was higher in the wet and normal seasons than in the dry season. The highest seasonal flux of MPs was observed during the wet season, accounting for 79.68%, with the largest contribution from the Suixi River. There was a significant positive relationship between the annual MP flux and river discharge (R² = 0.95, p< 0.001). Hydrological processes, human behavior, and weather conditions were key factors that contributed toward the spatiotemporal variation of MPs. Overall, the aim of this study was to provide baseline information on MP pollution in ZJB to help formulate control strategies for improving regional water quality and mitigating its pollution. In the future, this study can be used to assess the role of river basins and sewage outlets in transporting MPs to the estuaries and ocean.
Potential Risk of Co-Occurrence of Microplastics and Chlorinated Persistent Organic Pollutants to Coastal Wetlands: Evidence from a Case Study

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution in coastal wetlands is of a global concern. Little attention has been paid to the co-occurrence and corresponding risk of MPs with pollutants, especially refractory chlorinated persistent organic pollutants (CPOPs). A case study of Zhejiang, China was conducted to investigate the occurrence of MPs and targeted CPOPs in coastal wetlands. MPs were 100% detected, but with the lowest abundance in coastal wetlands (average: 666.1 +/- 159.1 items kg-1), as compared to other 6 terrestrial ecosystems (average: 1293.9 +/- 163.7 items kg -1) including paddy field, upland, facility vegetable field, forestland, urban soil, and grassland. A total of 35 kinds CPOPs were also detected in all studied coastal wetlands, with their concentration almost under 10 mu g kg -1 (90.1%). Both enrichment of MPs and CPOPs was affected by sediment TOC, wetland vegetation and land use simultaneously. Interestingly, the occurrence of MPs was significantly correlated with polychlorinated bi-phenyls (PCBs) but not organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). Results of co-occurrence pollution assessment of MPs and CPOPs further indicated only Hangzhou Bay showed the ecological risk among all tested wetlands. This would suggest a potential risk of co-occurrence of MPs and modern CPOPs in coastal wetland in economic development area. Possible reason may lie on strong MP vector effect to CPOPs. More attention should thus be paid to other wetlands polluted by MPs and MP-carrying CPOPs in area with relatively great environmental pressure induced by human activity. This study may provide reference for a better understanding with respect to the risk level posed by co-occurrence of MPs and CPOPs to global coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution in oceans is an emerging environmental problem that poses ecological risks for marine ecosystems. Based on the abundance, distribution, and characteristics of microplastics (MPs) in surface water, sediment, and organisms, MP sources, pollution, trophic transfer, and ecological risk in Xiangshan Bay, an area of intensive mariculture in East China Sea, were assessed in this study. MPs were prevalent in the environment and organisms, with overall abundances at a low-medium level compared with the levels in the coastal areas. In water, MPs were more abundant in the inner bay (0.32 items m-3), which is a more significant source of MPs with intensive mariculture than the central (0.09 items m-3) and outer bays (0.07 items m-3). The narrow and land-enclosed inner bay, with weak hydrodynamics for water exchange, retained MPs, thus increasing their abundance. The ecological risk of MPs in water was at a low-moderate level. The MP abundance in sediment did not vary significantly among the three regions of the bay. The morphological characteristics and polymers of the MPs differed in sediment from those in water, which was related to their diverse environmental redistribution routes. MP abundance ingested by organisms were related to their biological features and foraging habits. Overall, fish ingested more MPs than crustaceans, bivalves, and cephalopods, while zooplankton ingested the minimal MPs. Filter feeders ingested less MPs, with a preference for smaller particles than predators. MPs did not show trophic transfer behavior in organisms. Additionally, MPs ingested by infauna showed similar morphological and chemical characteristics compared to sediment at the point of organism residence, whereas MPs ingested by pelagic species were dissimilar to those in surface water. Our findings provide information for understanding MP pollution, source tracing, trophic transfer, and ecological risk assessment in coastal ecosystems.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), a new type of pollutant, pose a significant threat to the environment at high concentrations. One of the primary sources of MPs in the ocean is river runoff, highlighting the need to investigate the spatial and temporal variations of MPs in rivers that flow into the sea, as well as their contributing factors. In this study, we analyzed MPs distribution and their influence factors in the Lincheng River, China. The Lincheng is the second largest river in Zhoushan island that directly flows into the ocean. MPs in the river water and sediments were detected during the wet season (July 2021), the dry season (November 2021) and the typhoon season (September 2021), and MPs were present in all reaches of the river. The abundance of MPs in the river was moderate compared to other studies, with the river water exhibiting a concentration of 15 ± 2.64 n/L and the sediment containing 318.24 ± 49.53 n/kg of MPs. In surface water, the most commonly found MP was blue man-made cellulose (CE), while the sediment contained mostly fragments of polypropylene (PP) and polypropylene polyethylene blends (PP + PE) in blue and green colors. The abundance of MPs showed significant seasonal differences, with higher abundance during the wet season compared to the dry season and typhoon period. Furthermore, local construction activities may contribute to higher MP abundance. To explore the influence factors of MPs, the Basin Development Index (BDI) was proposed, and a positive correlation between BDI and MP abundance was founded. This correlation indicates that the increase in land use for construction highly contributes to the MP pollution. In conclusion, future long-term monitoring of the abundance of MPs in the Lincheng River is necessary.

Abstract:Wetlands are a key hub for the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) and have great load capacity to organic pollutants (OPs), thus, have been a hot research topic. It has shown that OPs adsorbed on MPs could be transported to anywhere and MP-associated biofilms also affects the co-occurrence of MPs and OPs. This would induce the desorption of MP-carrying OPs into environment again, increasing latent migration and convergence of MPs and OPs in wetlands. Considering MPs vector effect and MP-associated biofilms, it is necessary to integrate MPs information on its occurrence characteristics and migration behavior for an improved assessment of ecological risk brought by MPs and MP-carrying OPs to whole wetland ecosystems. In this review, we studied papers published from 2010 to 2020, focused on the interaction of MPs with OPs and the role of their co-occurrence and migration on ecological risk to wetlands. Results suggested the interaction between MPs and OPs dominated by adsorption altered their toxicity and environmental behavior, and the corresponding ecological risk induced by their co-occurrence to wetlands is various and complicated. Especially, constructed wetlands as the special hub for the migration of MPs and MP-carrying OPs might facilitate their convergence between natural and constructed wetlands, posing a potential enlarging ecological risk to whole wetlands. Since the study of MPs in wetlands has still been in a primary stage, we hope to provide a new sight to set forth the potential harm of MPs and MP-carrying OPs to wetlands and useful information for follow-up study.
Distribution and Sources of Microplastics in the Zhanjiang Bay Tidal Flat

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), a new type of pollutant, are widely distributed in marine environments worldwide, and severely affect the marine environment and the development of human society. In this study, the distribution characteristics and sources of MPs in the tidal flat of Zhanjiang Bay in southern China were analyzed. The average abundance of MPs in Zhanjiang Bay beach was 66.7 ±72.7 items/kg, with sizes of mainly 1–3 mm. Abnormal abundance and characteristics of MPs in the samples from the bay were associated with hydrodynamic conditions, the beach substrate type and biological activities. The MPs in the inner part of the bay might have been derived from domestic sewage discharge and ship wear, and the MPs at the middle of the bay might have originated from aquaculture activities. In contrast, the MPs outside the bay might have originated from human activities in the Pearl River Delta and western Guangdong.
Manifold Learning Co-Location Decision Tree for Remotely Sensed Imagery Classification

Abstract:Because traditional decision tree (DT) induction methods cannot efficiently take advantage of geospatial knowledge in the classification of remotely sensed imagery, several researchers have presented a co-location decision tree (CL-DT) method that combines the co-location technique with the traditional DT method. However, the CL-DT method only considers the Euclidean distance of neighborhood events, which cannot truly reflect the co-location relationship between instances for which there is a nonlinear distribution in a high-dimensional space. For this reason, this paper develops the theory and method for a maximum variance unfolding (MVU)-based CL-DT method (known as MVU-based CL-DT), which includes unfolding input data, unfolded distance calculations, MVU-based co-location rule generation, and MVU-based CL-DT generation. The proposed method has been validated by classifying remotely sensed imagery and is compared with four other types of methods, i.e., CL-DT, classification and regression tree (CART), random forests (RFs), and stacked auto-encoders (SAE), whose classification results are taken as “true values.” The experimental results demonstrate that: (1) the relative classification accuracies of the proposed method in three test areas are higher than CL-DT and CART, and are at the same level compared to RFs; and (2) the total number of nodes, the number of leaf nodes, and the number of levels are significantly decreased by the proposed method. The time taken for the data processing, decision tree generation, drawing of the tree, and generation of the rules are also shortened by the proposed method compared to CL-DT, CART, and RFs.
Comparative Haemodynamic Studies with Mepindolol-Sulphate(SH E 222) and Propranolol (Inderal®, Dociton®) in the Isoproterenol Test

Abstract:The haemodynamic effects of a β-receptor blockade with mepindolol-sulphate and propranolol were studied under basal conditions and under an increasing dose of isoproterenol in 6 subjects aged between 25 and 30 years. Special attention was paid to possible differences between the two substances as regards their affinity for the various β 1 and β 2 -receptors. The cardiac output (HMV) was determined with the aid of the Swan-Ganz-thermodilution method, the blood pressure was measured wet. The results led to the following conclusions: A decrease in the heart rate (HR) occurs under basal conditions after propranolol, but not after administration of mepindolol-sulphate. The lack of an effect of mepindolol-sulphate on the HR at rest can be explained by its intrinsic activity. A reduction of the stroke volume (SV) occurs under basal conditions after propranolol, whereas no effect on the SV was observed under mepindolol-sulphate. Three properties of mepindolol-sulphate are responsible for this lack of effect on the S V, namely its only slight quinidine-like effect compared with propranolol, its intrinsic activity and its only slight affinity for the inotropism receptors at the heart. An infusion of isoproterenol leads to a decrease in the pulmonary capillary pressures (Pc pressures). This effect can be competitively suppressed both with propranolol and with mepindolol-sulphate. This effect has been explained by the fact that isoproterenol leads to dilatation of the venous capacity vessels as a result of stimulation of the β 2 -receptors in the periphery. Blockade of the β 2 -receptors can prevent this dilatation. The affinities of propranolol for the frequency and inotropism receptors at the heart and for the β 2 -receptors in the peripheral vessels are of the same magnitude. In contrast to this, the affinity of mepindolol-sulphate for the inotropism receptors at the heart is considerably less than for the frequency receptors and the β 2 -receptors in the periphery.
A novel framework-based meta-analysis for in-depth characterization of microplastic pollution and associated ecological risks in Chinese Bays

Abstract:Among aquatic ecosystems, bays are ubiquitously contaminated with microplastics (MPs, size <5 mm), but a comprehensive understanding of their pollution characterization in Chinese Bays is largely elusive. The current study aims to systematically highlight factors intricating MP contamination as well as their geographic distribution, interactions, risk evaluation, and abundance prediction in bays. MPs' abundance was varied in different bays, at concentrations ranging between 0.26 ± 0.14–89, 500 ± 20, 600 items/m 3 in water, 15 ± 6–6433.5 items/kg dry weight in sediment and 0.21 ± 0.10–103.5 items/individual in biota. Redundancy analysis, Permannova, and GeoDetector model revealed that the sampling and extraction/identification methods, and geographical locations were the major drivers affecting MP distribution and characteristics. The Mantel test highlighted that the MP characteristics changed with geographic distance, higher in water than that in sediment and biota. ANOSIM results showed that the different environmental media exhibit significant differences in MP characteristics (e.g., color, shape, and polymer). The ARIMA model predicted that Sanggou Bay and Hangzhou Bay have a higher potential for significantly increasing MP contamination in the future. The highest hazard index ( HI ) values for water, sediment, and biota were respectively reported at Jiaozhou Bay (18,844.16), Bohai Bay (11,485.37), and Dongshan Bay (48,485.11). The highest values for the ecological risk index ( RI ) in water, sediment, and biota were detected at Beibu Gulf (6,129,559.02), Haikou Bay (2229.14), and Dongshan Bay (561,563.05), respectively. Overall, this framework can be used at different scales and in different environments, which makes it useful for understanding and controlling MP pollution in the ecosystem.

Abundant small microplastics hidden in water columns of the Yellow Sea and East China Sea: Distribution, transportation and potential risk

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pose significant concerns for marine ecological security due to their minuteness and ubiquity. However, comprehensive knowledge on their distribution and fate in seawater columns remains limited. This study investigated the abundances and characteristics of MPs across 3-6 water layers in the South Yellow Sea and East China Sea. Results indicate that high-abundance small MPs (< 100 µm) (average 6567 items/m3) were hidden beneath the sea-surface, predominantly fine-grained particles (< 20 µm) and high-density polymers (> 1.03 g/cm3). The total suspended MPs (5.0-834.2 µm) are estimated at 2.9-3.1 × 1017 particles, with most of them occurring in upper layers. In profiles, their distribution varied by physical properties with depth; fragment-shaped and high-density MPs increased in proportion at greater depths, contrasting with fibrous MPs. These MPs originated primarily from the Yangtze River and their winter transport was driven by the Yangtze River Dilution Water, East China Sea Coastal Current, and Yellow Sea Warm Current, resulting in their accumulation in coastal and estuarine regions. Consequently, the Yangtze River Estuary ecosystem faces substantial risks from MP pollution throughout the water column. This work unveils the prevalence of small MPs in coastal water columns and intricate interaction between their fate and hydrodynamic conditions.
Seasonal influence on pollution index and risk of multiple compositions of microplastics in an urban river

Abstract:Emerging contaminant microplastics (MPs) are getting worldwide attention for their ubiquitous occurrence and potential risk to the environment. However, the seasonal influence on freshwater MP pollution remains poorly understood. To better understand and evaluate the riverine MPs in different seasons, this study conducted the risk assessment of MPs in an urban river, Houjin River, during the different seasons. The present study found that the MPs (0.1–5 mm, mostly 0.1–2 mm) were more abundant in the dry season (183.33 ± 128.95 items/m 3 ) compared with the wet season (102.08 ± 45.80 items/m 3 ). Similarly, the mixture of different MPs polymers was more diverse in the dry season. The related pollution indices such as the contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) showed that average CF and PLI were 5.15 and 2.10 in the dry season, which significantly decreased to 1.58 and 1.25, respectively, in the wet season ( p < 0.05). Additionally, significant difference of the average risk quotient (RQ) was observed, which was 0.037 in the dry season and 0.021 in the wet season ( p < 0.05). To sum up, the results of this study indicate the seasonal effects on the pollution and risk of multiple compositions of MPs in the urban river, suggesting higher impacts of riverine MPs pollution in the dry season, as well as the potential increase of MPs, may lead to environmental risk in the future.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a widespread environmental problem posing ecological risks in the ocean. We investigated the abundance, spatial distribution, characteristics and ecological risks of MPs in surface seawater, sediments and organisms in Yueqing Bay, China. MPs were detected in both environmental media and organisms. The overall abundance (0.24 items/m 3 seawater, 6.13 items/kg dry sediment, 0.77 items/individual in organisms) was low to medium compared with other coastal areas. The MPs were mainly derived from the high-intensity mariculture and shipping in the bay, as well as industrial and human activities along the surrounding coast. The abundance of MPs in water of the left (western) bay (0.39 items/m 3 ) was considerably higher than that of the right (north-eastern) bay (0.07 items/m 3 ) due to the different levels of population and economic development on the left and right coasts. The ecological risk assessment showed generally low to medium risk from MPs pollution in Yueqing Bay, with higher ecological risk index ( H ) and potential ecological hazards ( RI ) of MPs polymers in water samples. These data emphasize the need for timely and effective action to reduce the contribution of intensive human activities to MPs pollution and provide information for further ecotoxicological studies, pollution control, and policy development of MPs. Environmental Implication Microplastics are widespread and have become an environmental problem that poses certain ecological risks. Some studies have investigated microplastic pollution in the ocean, but fewer have assessed the ecological risk. To fill this gap, we used the ecological risk assessment method to assess and warn of microplastic pollution in water, sediment and organisms. The sources and differential distribution of microplastics were also analysed and assessed from different aspects and perspectives, including human activities, land use types, population and economic development levels. Our study can provide effective information for subsequent ecotoxicological studies, pollution control and policy formulation on microplastics.

Spatiotemporal variations and the ecological risks of microplastics in the watersheds of China: Implying the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:China is not only the first reported place of the COVID-19 pandemic but also is the biggest microplastic emitter in the world. Nevertheless, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on microplastic pollution in the watersheds of China remains poorly understood. To address this, the present study conducted a data mining and multivariate statistical analysis based on 8898 microplastic samples from 23 Chinese watershed systems before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic extensively affected the abundance, colors, shapes, polymer types, and particle sizes of microplastic in Chinese watershed systems. Before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, 77.27 % of the Chinese watershed systems observed increased microplastic abundance. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic itself, natural conditions (such as altitude and weather), and anthropogenic factors (such as civil aviation throughput) are highly intertwined, jointly impacting the microplastic in the watersheds of China. From the perspective of ecological risks, the COVID-19 pandemic was more likely to aggravate the microplastic pollution in the middle and down reaches of the Yangtze River Watersheds. Overall, whether before or during the COVID-19 pandemic, the main watershed systems of China still stayed at a high pollution level, which rang the alarm bell that watershed systems of China had been at serious ecological risk accused of microplastic contamination.
Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Microplastics in a Coastal Region of the Pearl River Estuary, China

Abstract:This study conducted an analysis of microplastics (MPs) pollution in a coastal region of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) in the South China Sea. The results show that the abundance of MPs during the rainy season reached 545.5 particles m−3, which was 1.85-fold higher than during the dry season. The spatial distribution of MPs also varied offshore in the following order: the river > estuary > sea. The average abundance of MPs in the river was 1.17-fold higher than that of the estuary and 4.65-fold higher than that of the marine environment. There were large amounts of gray, white, and green MPs, and about 53.5–73.9% of the MPs were less than 0.5 mm. The main forms of MPs were fibers, granules, fragments, and films. MPs composed of polyethylene accounted for 35.7–38.8%. PCA analysis showed that MPs carried by the river were an important source of MP pollution in the coastal waters.

Abstract:Estuarine Microplastics (MPs) are limited to know globally. By filtering subsurface water through 330 μm nets, MPs in Jiaojiang, Oujiang Estuaries were quantified, as well as that in Minjiang Estuary responding to Typhoon Soulik. Polymer matrix was analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. MP (<5 mm) comprised more than 90% of total number plastics. The highest MPs density was found in Minjiang, following Jiaojiang and Oujiang. Fibers and granules were the primary shapes, with no pellets found. Colored MPs were the majority. The concentrations of suspended microplastics determine their bioavailability to low trophic organisms, and then possibly promoting the transfer of microplastic to higher trophic levels. Polypropylene and polyethylene were the prevalent types of MPs analyzed. Economic structures in urban estuaries influenced on MPs contamination levels. Typhoon didn't influence the suspended MP densities significantly. Our results provide basic information for better understanding suspended microplastics within urban estuaries and for managerial actions.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have become a great concern owing to their persistence and ecotoxicity in various environmental compartments. MPs can be transported from land to oceans via the aquatic system, and the oceans are believed to be the final sink for MPs. To resolve the lack of data concerning MP contamination in the northern South China Sea (NSCS), coastal seawater and sediments were investigated. The sample sites included the coastal area from Hong Kong to western Guangdong Province, which provided a representative coverage of variable distance to the shore. MP particles were observed in all samples, suggesting a widespread MP pollution in NSCS. The average MP abundance was relatively high in South China Sea, but it was lower than that in other Chinese coastal areas. In all samples, the dominant MP polymer was polyethylene terephthalate fibers. No statistically significant correlation was found between the abundances of MPs in seawater and sediment. The MP distribution in surface water affected by the monsoon exhibited high abundance in the east and low in the west, and MPs were more abundant near the shore than away from it. The tropical cyclone had no obvious effect on the overall MP abundance except in the Hong Kong west marine water (R4), which may attribute to proximity to Hong Kong and other islands.

Abstract:Marine microplastic (MP) pollution is a global environmental problem that has received attention from scientific researchers and the public for the past several decades. However, without a suitably large-volume sampling method, the presence of MPs in subsurface water (< 5 m) is poorly understood. Here, MP content in subsurface water was determined using a pump-underway ship intake system along the cross-oceanic transect from the Pearl River Estuary to the Indian Ocean. The study regions have always been considered as one of the major MPs hotspots in the global oceans and still lack of study. Generally, MP abundance ranged between 0 and 4.97 items m-3, with an overall mean value of 0.40 ± 0.62 items m-3. A total of 679 MP particles were identified using μ-FT-IR. These collections identified polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyester (PET) as the major polymers represented (73.14–88.81%). The presence of MPs in coastal regions was significantly higher than that in the open ocean, revealing the contribution of land-based sources to marine MPs and the ocean dynamics. Therefore, an effective and feasible way to retard the penetration of MPs into the marine environment is to exhibit controls at the source. No significant correlation was found between the MP abundance and the physical and chemical properties of water. The results of the analysis of similarities (ANOSIM) and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) also showed that MP communities in different environments were significantly greater than the differences in different sites within the same environment. These findings of this study provide reliable information on MP distribution and characterization in cross-oceanic region of South China Sea and Eastern Indian Ocean, which will help to improve our understanding about the fate of MPs in the ocean.

Abstract:Studying the abundance, characteristics, and removal of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in coastal cities is of great significance for understanding the impacts of human activities on the marine environment, but currently, little information on this topic is available in China. Therefore, the abundance, characteristics, and removal of MPs in seven WWTPs of Xiamen, a typical coastal city in China, are studied. Sixty samples were collected using an improved sampling method involving an electromagnetic flowmeter and a fast digital camera. The influent MPs concentration is 1.57-13.69 items/L, and it is reduced to 0.20-1.73 items/L in the effluent, indicating that 79.3-97.8% MPs is removed. Based on the daily effluent discharge and MPs removal rate, it is estimated that ∼6.5 × 108 MPs are released from the seven WWTPs into the Xiamen Bay each day. The light microscopic and micro-Raman spectroscopic analysis indicates that ∼62.68% of particles are plastic polymers, including polypropylene (31.6%), polyethylene (21.9%), polystyrene (10.1%), propylene/ethylene copolymer (9.2%), and polyethylene terephthalate (7.5%). The color of MPs is mainly composed of white (27.3%) and clears (25.8%). Our results show that granules (41.1%) are the dominant shape of MPs, followed by fragments (31.3%), fibers (23.7%), and pellet (3.9%). The characteristics of MPs such as sizes, shapes, and types affect the MPs removal in WWTPs. Our findings show that MPs concentration in the influent is positively correlated with the suspended solids (SS), however, in the effluent, it is associated with the WWTPs operating load, as reflected by obviously higher MP abundance in overloaded ones.
