Abstract:Nomophobia is a situational phobia in which a person experiences fear of not being able to use the smartphone. The Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) is the most widely used but it is not validated in the Spanish-speaking Latin American context. There are hardly any cross-cultural studies of nomophobia. The main objectives are to:1) adapt and validate the NMP-Q in a Mexican sample; 2) analyse gender, age and cross-cultural invariance; 3) examine the differences between countries. The Mexican sample consisted of 19,226 participants (63.1% girls), and the Spanish sample of 3897 (46% girls), aged between 14 and 19 years. The model of four-factors explained by a second-order factor fitted the data adequately. Satisfactory reliability indices were obtained, invariance by sex and age, and cross-cultural invariance. Higher scores were found in females, in adolescents aged 14–16 years, and in the Spaniards. The NMP-Q allows identifying problems of nomophobia in Mexicans and comparing them with Spaniards.

Abstract:Nomophobia is considered a modern age phobia introduced to our lives as a byproduct of the interaction between people and mobile information and communication technologies, especially smartphones. This study sought to contribute to the nomophobia research literature by identifying and describing the dimensions of nomophobia and developing a questionnaire to measure nomophobia. Consequently, this study adopted a two-phase, exploratory sequential mixed methods design. The first phase was a qualitative exploration of nomophobia through semi-structured interviews conducted with nine undergraduate students at a large Midwestern university in the U.S. As a result of the first phase, four dimensions of nomophobia were identified: not being able to communicate, losing connectedness, not being able to access information and giving up convenience. The qualitative findings from this initial exploration were then developed into a 20-item nomophobia questionnaire (NMP-Q). In the second phase, the NMP-Q was validated with a sample of 301 undergraduate students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a four-factor structure for the NMP-Q, corresponding to the dimensions of nomophobia. The NMP-Q was shown to produce valid and reliable scores; and thus, can be used to assess the severity of nomophobia.

Abstract:Smartphone use influences teenagers’ behaviors and lifestyles, not always in a positive way. Abuse and dependence on the use of this device is what has led to the study of nomophobia. The objective of this research is to measure the level of nomophobia in adolescents, and to study their digital consumption habits. The study seeks to analyze the relationships between risk of nomophobia, digital behavior, age and smartphone use. A structured questionnaire has been applied to a sample of 850 students aged 12 to 16. The data has been analyzed with SPSS and SPAD. Multivariate statistical characterization, one of the most recent data mining techniques, has been used to study differences in teenagers’ behaviors according to their risk of nomophobia, and to find related explanatory variables. Teenagers’ nomophobia risk ranges from mild to moderate, showing a relation with age, academic performance and intensity of use of mobile social networking apps. The risk of nomophobia responds to differences in students’ digital, social, relational and educational behaviors, and exhibits differences according to academic performance, age, gender, motivation and self-perception.

Abstract:Nomophobia is a phenomenon that describes the fear of not having one's mobile phone accessible. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of nomophobia among nursing students as well as its relationship with procrastination and social anxiety. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 308 nursing students. Data were collected using the Nomophobia Questionnaire, Academic Procrastination Scale-Short Form, and Social Anxiety Questionnaire for Adults. Additionally, sociodemographic variables related to academic performance and smartphone use were collected. We performed a descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate analysis of the Nomophobia Questionnaire score. Results: 19.5% (n = 60) of the students presented with or were at high risk of nomophobic behaviour. Moreover, nomophobic behaviour was positively correlated with high levels of social anxiety (p < 0.001), longer daily smartphone usage time (p < 0.001), and a high frequency of smartphone checking in class (p < 0.001). The predictive variables for nomophobic behaviour included age, variables related to smartphone use, social anxiety levels, work, procrastination tendency, sex, and self-reported average grade. Conclusion: One out of five students in the sample studied presented with or were at high risk of nomophobic behaviour. Additionally, nomophobic behaviour was associated with social anxiety and variables related to smartphone use. This study was not registered.
Translation and Validation of the Nomophobia Questionnaire in the Italian Language: Exploratory Factor Analysis

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Nomophobia, which is a neologism derived from the combination of "no mobile," "phone," and "phobia" is considered to be a modern situational phobia and indicates a fear of feeling disconnected.OBJECTIVE: No psychometric scales are available in Italian for investigating such a construct. We therefore planned a translation and validation study of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q), which is an instrument developed by Yildirim and Correia. Subjects were recruited via an online survey using a snowball approach.METHODS: The NMP-Q was translated from English into Italian using a classical "backwards and forwards" procedure. In order to explore the underlying factor structure of the translated questionnaire, an exploratory factor analysis was carried out. A principal component analysis approach with varimax rotation was performed. Multivariate regression analyses were computed to shed light on the psychological predictors of nomophobia.RESULTS: A sample of 403 subjects volunteered to take part in the study. The average age of participants was 27.91 years (standard deviation 8.63) and the sample was comprised of 160 males (160/403, 39.7%) and 243 females (243/403, 60.3%). Forty-five subjects spent less than 1 hour on their mobile phone per day (45/403, 11.2%), 94 spent between 1 and 2 hours (94/403, 23.3%), 69 spent between 2 and 3 hours (69/403, 17.1%), 58 spent between 3 and 4 hours (58/403, 14.4%), 48 spent between 4 and 5 hours (48/403, 11.9%), 29 spent between 5 and 7 hours (29/403, 7.2%), 36 spent between 7 and 9 hours (36/403, 8.9%), and 24 spent more than 10 hours (24/403, 6.0%). The eigenvalues and scree plot supported a 3-factorial nature of the translated questionnaire. The NMP-Q showed an overall Cronbach alpha coefficient of 0.95 (0.94, 0.89, and 0.88 for the three factors). The first factor explained up to 23.32% of the total variance, while the second and third factors explained up to 23.91% and 18.67% of the variance, respectively. The total NMP-Q score correlated with the number of hours spent on a mobile phone.CONCLUSIONS: The Italian version of the NMP-Q proved to be reliable.

Abstract:Nomophobia is the discomfort caused by not being in contact with a cell phone. Few studies have addressed nomophobia in university students. The study aimed to evaluate nomophobia and its associated factors in Peruvian medical students. We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study on Peruvian medical students between June 2020 and March 2021, using an online survey disseminated through social networks. We analyzed 3139 responses (females: 61.1%, median age: 22 years): 25.7% presented moderate nomophobia and 7.4% severe nomophobia. In the adjusted model, the nomophobia score was lower in students ≥24 years (β: −4.1, 95% CI: −7.2 to −1.0) and was higher in those who had a mobile internet data plan (β: 2.9, 0.8 to 5.0), used the cell phone >4 h (β: 4.5, 2.3 to 6.7), used a smartphone mainly for education (β: 2.5, 0.2 to 4.8), social networks (β: 8.2, 5.8 to 10.6) and entertainment (β: 3.3, 0.5 to 6.1), and those who presented possible anxious (β: 6.6, 4.3 to 8.9) or depressive (β: 19.5, 5.2 to 9.6) symptomatology. In conclusion, nomophobia in university students is a frequent and emerging problem, present mainly at younger ages and associated with symptoms of anxiety or depression. Implementing evaluation and early intervention strategies would favor the mental health of university students.

Abstract:PSYCHOSOMATIC research is a border territory and the more the psychiatrist understands the dermatologist and vice versa the better. The no-man's-land of psychosomatic illness is, however, in danger of becoming everyman's land. Psychiatry is peculiarly and unfortunately often considered .to be nothing more than applying common sense to psychological data. A few critical remarks on the general trend are therefore called for. This paper is intended to show the value of the psychotherapoutic approach in psychosomatic research, namely the detailed study of the individual patient by a well trained psychiatrist. Response to, and observation during, psychotherapeutic sessions is indispensable for accurate understanding of symptoms and their significance, and is a safeguard against unwarranted generalizations. Where the dermatologist looks with a trained eye, the ps;v chiatrist's task is to listen with a trained ear. For both, response to therapy is a tool of diagnostic value. At the present day there is a tendency to replace minute clinical study of single patients during psychotherapy by attempts at finding common, arbitrarily selected traits of personality in large numbers. But statistics and large numbers are not the royal road to psychiatric insight into a patient's conscious and unconscious mental processes. Barber (1952a) only recently stressed that one carefully investigated case may be more fruitful than collections of statistics. It is thereby not meant to dispute the role of statistics in confirming known or suspected facts. The usual approach to psychosomatic problems by establishing personality patterns and types has lately been rightly criticized from various quarters (Cobb, 1952 ; Macalpine, 1952 ; Obermayer, 1952). Without enumerating the many valid objections to this approach, and the unconvincing supporting evidence, it may be stated briefly that its main fault lies in the fact that it suflFers both from over-simplification and over-complication. The history of Medicine from time immemorial shows that the approach by types and temperaments has proved unrewarding and inconclusive. Similarly, projective techniques cannot replace direct insight gained during psychotherapy, and only have their place as aids to the psychiatrist as laboratory tests help the dermatologist. By themselves tests can never replace the clinical approach, and used alone are as dangerous and misleading as any scientific short cut.

Abstract:Background: A psychological condition known as NOMOPHOBIA causes individuals to fear losing ability to use or reach their mobile phones. The NMP-Q (nomophobia questionnaire) is a commonly used survey for assessing symptoms related to nomophobia.Materials and methods: We performed a meta-analysis using reliability generalization (RG) on the NMP-Q. Thirteen studies involving 15,929 participants have reported original reliability estimates of the NMP-Q determined through a comprehensive and methodical examination of the available literature.Results: For the total scores, the pooled internal consistency reliability was 0.93 [0.91; 0.95] and for the subscales it ranged from 0.83 to 0.91. Specifically, 0.91 [0.88; 0.93], 0.84 [0.80; 0.88], 0.83 [0.78; 0.88, and 0.83 [0.80; 0.85] for the subscales. Subscale 1 = not being able to communicate; subscale 2 = losing connectedness; subscale 3 = not being able to access information; and subscale 4 = giving up convenience", respectively. All reported effect sizes are Cronbach's alphas. Structural validity supported a solution of four-factors.Conclusions: NMP-Q has an excellent internal consistency. Structural validity of four factors appears to be vigorous in fitting NMP-Q items. Our recommendation is to require future studies using NMP-Q to provide a reliability estimate based on their own data.

Abstract:Objectives: Nomophobia, an abbreviation of "No mobile phone phobia", is characterized by the illogical fear of being detached from the mobile phone or unable to use it. Research have provided evidence of an association between increased cellular phone use and multiple health issues, such as anxiety, depression, insomnia, and others. To our knowledge, there are no Lebanese studies about nomophobia, despite the high incorporation rate of mobile phones in Lebanon and the likelihood of suffering from anxiety, depression, and other conditions due to nomophobic attitudes. The study objectives were to validate and confirm psychometric properties of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) and examine the associations between particular psychological conditions (anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia and impulsivity) and nomophobia among a representative sample of Lebanese people. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out between January and July 2019. It enrolled 2260 residents of the community randomly selected from Lebanon's Mohafazat. Two villages per sub-district and households from each village were chosen using a random sampling technique. A questionnaire was distributed randomly to the households. SPSS version 25 was used to perform the statistical analysis. A multinomial regression was computed taking the nomophobia categories as the dependent variable (and taking the absence of nomophobia as the reference category) and all variables that showed a significant association in the bivariate analysis as independent variables. Results: A total of 2260 (80.71%) out of 2800 questionnaires distributed was collected back. The mean age of the participants was 27.98 ± 9.66 years (58.8% females). Moreover, the mean nomophobia score was 71.56 ± 26.92 (median = 71; minimum = 14; maximum = 140). The results showed that 46 (2.0%) had no nomophobia, 769 (34.1%) mild nomophobia [95% CI 0.322-0.361], 1089 (48.3%) moderate nomophobia [95% CI 0.463-0.504] and 349 (15.5%) severe nomophobia [95% CI 0.140-0.170]. Items of the nomophobia scale converged over a solution of three factors that had an Eigenvalue over 1 (Factor 1 = emotions associated to losing connectedness, Factor 2 = not being able to communicate, Factor 3 = not being able to access information; total variance explained = 66.65%, and Cronbach's alpha = 0.948). The results of a multinomial regression, taking the nomophobia score as the dependent variable, showed that higher age was significantly associated with lower odds of having mild (aOR = 0.97), moderate (aOR = 0.93) and severe (aOR = 0.97) nomophobia respectively. Higher anxiety (aOR = 1.09) and higher insomnia (aOR = 1.04) were significantly associated with higher odds of having severe nomophobia. Conclusion: The results suggest a positive correlation between nomophobia and psychological conditions. There is a need for longitudinal and prospective studies that furnish information with regards of the impact of time on the variables measured, in order to better understand the nature, causes, and attributes of nomophobia.
Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cell Treatment for Crohn’s Disease: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial

Abstract:Background/Aims Stem cell therapy has been applied to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases, including Crohn’s disease (CD), but few studies have examined the use of umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs). This trial sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of UC-MSCs for the treatment of CD. Methods Eighty-two patients who had been diagnosed with CD and had received steroid maintenance therapy for more than 6 months were included in this study. Forty-one patients were randomly selected to receive a total of four peripheral intravenous infusions of 1×106 UC-MSCs/kg, with one infusion per week. Patients were followed up for 12 months. The Crohn’s disease activity index (CDAI), Harvey-Bradshaw index (HBI), and corticosteroid dosage were assessed. Results Twelve months after treatment, the CDAI, HBI, and corticosteroid dosage had decreased by 62.5±23.2, 3.4±1.2, and 4.2±0.84 mg/day, respectively, in the UC-MSC group and by 23.6±12.4, 1.2±0.58, and 1.2±0.35 mg/day, respectively, in the control group (p<0.01, p<0.05, and p<0.05 for UC-MSC vs control, respectively). Four patients developed a fever after cell infusion. No serious adverse events were observed. Conclusions UC-MSCs were effective in the treatment of CD and produced mild side effects.
Translation of the Chinese Version of the Nomophobia Questionnaire and Its Validation Among College Students: Factor Analysis

Abstract:Background Nomophobia or phobia of no mobile phone is the fear of being without a mobile phone or being unable to contact others via a mobile phone. It is a newly emerging psychiatric disorder among mobile phone users. Objective There are no psychometric scales available in China for examining nomophobia, although China has become the largest mobile phone handset consumer market in the world. Therefore, this study aimed to translate the original English version of a psychometric scale into Chinese and further examine its reliability and validity among Chinese college students. Methods The original version of the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) was first translated into Chinese using the backward and forward translation procedure. An exploratory factor analysis (a principal component analysis plus varimax rotation) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed to examine the underlying factor structure of the translated questionnaire. The internal consistency reliability of the scale was determined by computing the Cronbach alpha coefficient, the test-retest reliability, and the corrected item-total correlation. A multivariate regression analysis was used for examining associations between nomophobia and independent variables among the college students. Results A total of 2000 participants were included in the study. Their ages ranged from 16 to 25 years, with 51.95% (1039/2000) being male participants. The Chinese version of NMP-Q retained 18 items. The eigenvalues, total variance explained, and scree plot jointly support a 4-factor structure of the translated questionnaire. The CFA reached the adaptive standard, and the discriminant validity of the scale was good. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of this scale was .925, and the Cronbach alpha coefficients of the subscales were .882, .843, .895, and .818. The test-retest reliability was 0.947. Corrected item-total correlation ranged from 0.539 to 0.663. The significant predictors for each of the dimensions of nomophobia and total score of the questionnaire were the average number of hours spent on a mobile phone daily and gender. Conclusions The Chinese version of the NMP-Q exhibited satisfactory psychometric properties.

Abstract:Nomophobia is a relatively new term describing someone’s fear, discomfort, or anxiety when his/her smartphone is not available. It is reported that low self-esteem may contribute to an individual’s tendency for nomophobia. The aim of this particular study was to investigate the association between nomophobia and self-esteem among Greek university students. The study sample consisted of 1060 male and female university students aged 18 to 25 years, participating on a voluntary basis with an online anonymous questionnaire. Data were collected through “Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q)” and “Rosenberg’s self-esteem scale (RSES)”. All participants exhibited some level of nomophobia, with the moderate level prevailing (59.6%). Regarding self-esteem categories, 18.7% of the participants showed low self-esteem, while the rest showed normal/high levels. Students with low self-esteem were twice as likely to exhibit a higher level of nomophobia compared to those with normal/high (adj Cum OR = 1.99, p value < 0.001). Additionally, women and students having fathers without a university education had a higher risk of exhibiting a greater level of nomophobia (adj Cum OR = 1.56 and 1.44, respectively, p values ≤ 0.008). It was observed that low self-esteem and nomophobia are closely connected. Further investigation into this particular issue is needed to explore potential causality between them.

Abstract:Introduction To our knowledge there is no study exploring the interrelationship between nomophobia, phubbing and social phobia in Portuguese young adults and adults. Objectives To explore the nomophobia, phubbing and social phobia levels, the interrelationship between these three constructs, in a sample of Portuguese young adults and adults. Methods 316 subjects, with a mean age of 25.71 years old (SD = 8.231; range 18 - 59) fulfilled a sociodemographic questionnaire, and the Portuguese validations of the Nomophobia Questionnaire, the Phubbing Scale and the Social Interaction and Performance Anxiety and Avoidance Scale. Results All the subjects presented nomophobia (100%, n = 316), with 62% (n = 196) presenting a moderate risk level and 22% (n = 69) an higher risk level. The mean of the 'total phubbing score' was of 21.50 (DP = 5.50) and 'smartphone obsession' was the phubbing subscale with an higher score (X = 12.81, DP = 3.50). The mean of the total nomophobia was of 80.0 (DP = 22.83) and 'not being able to communicate' was the nomophobia subescale with an higher score (X = 24.75, DP = 9.95).Considering social phobia scale, the mean of the 'anxiety/distress' subscale was of 95.36 (DP = 25.14) and of the 'avoidance subscale' was of 89.56 (DP = 25.53). Almost 22% (n = 69) of the subjects presented 'social anxiety' and 24% (n = 76) presented 'social avoidance', suggesting probable social phobia cases (higher than the proposed cut-off scores). Positive and significant correlations were found between all the nomophobia and phubbing subscales (ranging from .30** to .61**). Positive and significantly correlations, mostly with low magnitude, were found between nomophobia and social phobia subscales (ranging from .03** to .22**), except for 'social avoidance' subescale, which correlation was negative (-.021*). Females presented higher levels of nomophobia (Md = 176.28) and phubbing (Md = 167.22) than males (Md =124.73, U = 7301.500, p <.001;Md = 141.93), U = 9475.500, p= .019, respectively). Total social phobia scores and nomophobia (not being able to access information and giving up convenience subescales) were significantly higher in young adults. Conclusions Nomophobia, phubbing and social phobia are significantly intercorrelated. Future longitudinal studies are needed to clarify nomophobia and phubbing etiology. We carried out a cross-sectional study among high school and vocational training students in Galicia, Northwest Spain ( N = 3,100). Collected data included nomophobia, sociodemographic variables, and alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis consumption. Nomophobia was measured using the validated Nomophobia Questionnaire. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and their 95 percent confidence intervals (CIs) were estimated using generalized linear mixed models. More than a quarter of the adolescents (27.7 percent) had nomophobia. We found an association between nomophobia and a high level of tobacco smoking in the last month in boys (OR = 2.16; 95 percent CI: 1.55–3.03). Nomophobia was also associated with higher odds of binge drinking in both genders (girls: OR = 1.86; 95 percent CI: 1.61–3.52; boys: OR = 2.29; 95 percent CI: 1.68–3.13) and with cannabis consumption in boys (OR = 1.74; 95 percent CI: 1.07–2.81). Our findings highlight the importance of a comprehensive investigation of the factors underlying alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis consumption in the adolescent population.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to examine high school students' use of smartphones and their nomophobia levels. This research was designed using one of the mixed research methods, the Explanatory Mixed Method, with the combined use of both quantitative and qualitative paradigms. Nomophobia Scale was used to collect the quantitative data of the research study. 767 students from two different high schools in Nigde in Turkey participated in the research. The qualitative data were obtained from the semi-structured interviews held with 19 high school students selected from the above mentioned participants. Descriptive and explanatory statistics were used to analyse the quantitative data whereas the qualitative data were processed with the use of content analysis. The results of the study showed that high school students were nomophobic at a moderate level, and anxious about not being able to access information, losing connectedness, not being able to communicate, and giving up convenience. Moreover, it was found in the study that the participants' nomophobia levels varied significantly with regards to gender, self-reported time spent on the phone per day, grade level and duration of smartphone ownership. The participants' motivations for using smartphones were listed as communication, keeping in touch, social media and hobby. In this regard, we can recommend further investigation into psychological reasons underlying nomophobia, restrictions of students' daily use of smartphones and undertaking some measures such as implementation of awareness raising activities regarding nomophobia in schools and social life.Key words: addiction; high school; nomophobia; smartphone; smartphone addiction

Nomophobia and Phubbing Levels of Nursing Students: A Multicenter Study

Abstract:Today, with the enhancement in the usage of smartphones, the concepts of nomophobia and phubbing have emerged. Nomophobia refers to the fear of being deprived of smartphones/smart devices. Phubbing is the use of a person's smartphone in situations that are not appropriate for the situation, time, and place. Therefore, the study purposed to evaluate nursing students' nomophobia and phubbing scores in Turkey, Portugal, and the United States. The data were collected with the Personal Information Questionnaire, Nomophobia Scale, and Phubbing Scale from N = 446 nursing students. The mean age of the students was 22.04 ± 4.08 years, and 86.5% were women. It was found that the total nomophobia scores of the nursing students were 80.15 ± 21.96, 72.29 ± 28.09, and 99.65 ± 6.11, respectively in Turkey, Portugal, and the United States. When the countries' Nomophobia Scale total scores, "giving up convenience," "not being able to communicate," and "losing connectedness" scores were compared with each other, they were found to be statistically significant ( P < .05). When the countries' Phubbing Scale total scores and all subscale scores were compared with each other were found to be statistically significant ( P < .05). It is seen that nomophobia scores were moderate (60 ≤ NMP-Q nomophobia ≤ 99) and phubbing scores (<40) were below the level indicating addiction in all countries.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Smartphones with internet access have replaced computers, become an integral part of life and make life easier. But along with these positive features, there are also various negative effects. Therefore, the use of smartphones can also be problematic. The present study was conducted with the aim of developing a model of symptoms of nomophobia in students based on attachment style, media literacy and locus of control with the mediation of Internet addiction. Methods: The method of this study was correlational. The statistical population of this study was the male students of the first public high school in Qom city. 306 people were selected using cluster random sampling method. The data collection tools were Yildirim and Correa's Nomophobia Questionnaire (2015), Hazan and Shaver's Adult Attachment Questionnaire (1987), Falsafi Media Literacy Questionnaire (2013), Rutter's Locus of Control Questionnaire (1966) and Young's Internet Addiction Questionnaire (1999). Data analysis was done using structural equation modeling method and Lisrel software. Results: The results showed that the model of symptoms of nomophobia in students based on attachment style, media literacy and locus of control with the mediation of Internet addiction fits experimental data (P<0.05). Conclusion: It is recommended to design and implement intervention programs in schools for adolescents in the most vulnerable populations who face the adverse effects of using smartphones, especially nomophobic behavior.
Nomophobia and Its Association with Depression, Anxiety and Stress (DASS Scale), among Young Adults in Greece

Abstract:Smartphones with their numerous applications have become essential daily equipment, prompting scientific research to deal with the impact of their use on psychosocial health. Under this spectrum, the aim of the present cross-sectional study was to examine the association between nomophobia and the negative emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress, in relation to self-esteem and sociodemographic data, among the young adult population. The study sample consisted of 1408 young adults aged 18–25 years, participating on a voluntary basis with an online anonymous questionnaire. Data were collected through the “Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q)”, “Depression Anxiety Stress Scales—short form (DASS-21)”, and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The questionnaire also included socio-demographic characteristics and smartphone use variables. Data analysis showed that women were identified with severe depression and stress to a greater extent than men (63.3% vs. 55.1% for depression and 18.1% vs. 13.8% for stress scale). With respect to nomophobia, participants with severe levels of nomophobia also exhibited severe levels of negative emotional states in all DASS components, i.e., 40.6% in depression, 73.7% in anxiety, and 32.7% in stress (all p values < 0.001). Participants with severe levels of depression and anxiety were very often checking their phone and used it in all daily activities. Moreover, correlation analysis revealed that self-esteem had a moderating effect on the relationship between nomophobia and DASS, a fact that modifies the association between the involved variables: stronger relationships appeared between nomophobia and DASS components in individuals with normal/high self-esteem than in individuals with low self-esteem.

Abstract:This research was conducted to measure the nomophobia levels of young people. The sample of the study consisted of 400 young people living in rural districts of Bursa province in Turkey. The results show that 8.5% of the youth was severely nomophobic, 71.5% were moderate and 20.0% were mildly nomophobic. There was no statistically significant difference between gender and working status and nomophobia level but statistically significant differences were encountered between age and educational status. As young people's age increased, the levels of nomophobia they suffer decreased. They asserted a higher level of nomophobia during high school years. Despite a slight decrease in university years, students' nomophobia levels were higher than the graduates and working youth. When the sub-dimensions of the scale were examined, the 'avoidance' and 'conflict' factors were above the NoSmartPhone Scale (NSPS) mean score, but the interwind identity and attachment factors were below the mean score.
