Abstract:Smart phones have permeated every part of people’s lives in the mobile internet era and are virtually taken for granted on a daily basis. Chinese primary school students are facing a serious problem with mobile gaming addiction as a result of their easy access to cell phones. The excessive usage of mobile games has negative impacts on children’s academic performance, physical health, and mental health, and may possibly have severe, irreversible implications. It is crucial for educators and the general public to address the issue of mobile game addiction in primary school students. This article examined the current state of mobile gaming among primary school students and the negative effects of mobile game addiction on schoolchildren, looked at the contributing factors from the perspectives of students, parents, schools, and society, and suggested some coping mechanisms.

Abstract:As a novel type of mobile game, addictive behavior has attracted the attention of researchers due to its possible negative impacts on several forms of psychological problems. In this research, we tested the relationship between academic performance, mobile game addiction (MGA), and mobile self‐efficacy among undergraduates in Taiwan. An academic model has been suggested from the hypotheses and using a sample of 739 college students by estimating the structural equation modeling. This result discloses that college students are an at‐risk swarm for the MGA. We realized that MGA was negatively connected with academic performance and mobile self‐efficacy, exhibiting a positive relationship between the latter two. Further analysis on age, place of stay, and the duration of playing mobile games distinction was tested in the trajectories from MGA to these psychological health results, and the results revealed that they were significantly associated with MGA. We also dealt with the limitations and recommended that the authorities immediately regard this, and to complete academic goals, college students should refrain from playing mobile games and participate in other forms of healthy entertainment.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Problem gaming and sleep deprivation among adolescents represent critical issues in public health. Online gaming frequently incorporates monetary features, like microtransactions, blurring the line between gaming and gambling. More than half of parents are worried that their children feel pressured to make in-game purchases (Ofcom, 2023). Research has shown an association between problem gaming and heightened psychological distress as well as reduced sleep quality in adolescents. In Taiwan, there has been a notable increase in online game and gambling game advertisements across both offline and online platforms in recent decades. This study aims to explore the relationships between adolescents' exposure to marketing, parental involvement, in-game purchases, problem gaming, engagement in gambling games, psychological distress, and sleep problems in Taiwan. Methods Data were gathered from a sample of 2595 seventh-grade students across 30 middle schools in both urban and rural areas of Taiwan. A self-administered questionnaire was conducted in 2020. A panel of 8 experts was invited to assess the content validity of the questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to students in their classrooms by trained interviewers. Approval was obtained from the Institutional Review Board at National Taiwan Normal University. Results The findings revealed that 94% of adolescents engaged in online gaming, with 38% making in-game purchases, 9% participating in online gambling games, and 32% reporting poor sleep quality. The multiple regression results showed that adolescents exposed to higher levels of gaming marketing, involved in in-game purchases, and experiencing lower levels of active parental mediation were more likely to have problem gaming. Furthermore, adolescents with increased exposure to gambling game marketing, influenced by advertising effects, involved in in-game purchases, and experiencing problem gaming, were more likely to engage in online gambling games and purchase tokens. Additionally, adolescents involved in in-game purchases, problem gaming, and playing online gambling games were more likely to experience higher psychological distress and poor sleep quality. Conclusion Adolescents' engagement in in-game purchases, problem gaming behaviors, and playing online gambling games has been linked to increased risks of psychological distress and poor sleep quality. Abstract:As a new type of addictive behaviors and distinct from traditional internet game addiction on desktop computers, mobile game addiction has attracted researchers' attention due to its possible negative effects on mental health issues. However, very few studies have particularly examined the relationship between mobile game addiction and mental health outcomes, due to a lack of specified instrument for measuring this new type of behavioral addiction. In this study, we examined the relationship between mobile game addition and social anxiety, depression, and loneliness among adolescents. We found that mobile game addiction was positively associated with social anxiety, depression, and loneliness. A further analysis on gender difference in the paths from mobile game addiction to these mental health outcomes was examined, and results revealed that male adolescents tend to report more social anxiety when they use mobile game addictively. We also discussed limitations and implications for mental health practice.

Abstract:Introduction: Youth are increasingly playing mobile games, which are distinct from traditional games, but there is limited research investigating the causal relationship between mobile game addiction and mental health problems in Thailand. This study investigated the association between mobile game addiction and depression, loneliness, and social anxiety as well as academic performance. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data were collected from 3427 students in Thailand from May to September 2022, using a 5-part self-report questionnaire. A multistage random sampling was performed. Descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to analyze the data. Results: The prevalence of mobile game addiction among Thai youth was 22.2% (95% confidence interval = 20.9–23.7), which was higher among females (25.6%) than males (17.9%) with P < 0.001 and higher among high school students (25.6%) than vocational (20.6%) and undergraduate students (20.0%) with P = 0.001. According to the SEM analysis, mobile game addiction was significantly associated with depression (β = 0.36, P < 0.001), loneliness (β = 0.31, P < 0.001), social anxiety (β = 0.28, P < 0.001), and grade point average mediated by social anxiety (β = 0.10, P < 0.001). Conclusion: The model depicting the causal relationship between mobile game addiction, depression, loneliness, social anxiety, and academic performance is consistent with empirical data. The identification of a substantial group of addicted mobile gamers and the addiction effects on mental health issues supports efforts by all stakeholders to prevent youth from becoming game addicted as well as treat addicted gamers.
The Association between Video Game Time and Adolescent Mental Health: Evidence from Rural China

Abstract:As digital devices like computers become more widely available in developing countries, there is a growing need to understand how the time that adolescents spend using these devices for recreational purposes such as playing video games is linked with their mental health outcomes. We measured the amount of time that adolescents in rural China spent playing video games and the association of video game time with their mental health. We collected data from primary and junior high schools in a poor, rural province in northwest China (n = 1603 students) and used the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21) to measure mental health symptoms. The results indicated that the average video game time was about 0.69 h per week. There was a significant association between adolescent video game time and poorer mental health. Each additional hour of playing video games also increased the chance of having moderate or above symptoms. Moreover, boys and non-left-behind children had worse mental health if they played more video games. Our study contributes to literature on the links between recreational screen time and mental health, and it sheds light on an issue addressed by recent government legislation to limit the video game time of minors in China.

Abstract:The use of the internet for entertainment has increased hugely over the last decade among Chinese adolescents, but the psychosocial impacts remain unclear. The aims of this study are to explore the associations between internet use, cyberbullying and psychosocial wellbeing among Chinese adolescents. Questionnaires were completed in the classroom setting by 3378 middle school students aged 11–16 years old (M = 13.58, SD = 0.87) in three provinces representing eastern, central and western China. Key findings included: 1) Internet use of over 3 h per day was associated with higher prevalence of anxiety [OR = 1.6, 95% CI (1.1, 2.2), p = 0.006], depression [OR = 2.1, 95% CI (1.7, 2.6), p < 0.001] and psychosomatic health problems, such as abdominal pain [OR = 2.4, 95% CI (1.8, 3.3), p < 0.001]. 2) Boys were much more likely to play online games. 3) Moderate time of gaming was overall beneficial to well-being. 4) Cyberbullying was common, with 37.5% admitting involvement. 5) Bully-victims were most vulnerable to mental and psychosomatic health problems, and only-bullies were the least vulnerable group. Our findings suggest moderate internet use for entertainment is not detrimental to mental health, but excessive use is. Schools should promote adolescents’ responsible use of the internet and incorporate anti-cyberbullying programs into the curriculum.

Abstract:Background: Internet gaming is extremely popular in China. However, some players overuse it, with negative outcomes. Knowing the prevalence rate and specific risk factors can provide a better understanding of the etiology of Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of IGD among Chinese adolescents and its association with their personality traits and Internet gaming characteristics.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was utilized in this study. Participants were recruited from 34 provincial administrative districts in China and consisted of 6,379 adolescent game players aged 15–25 (males/females = 3,701/2,678, mean age: 19.35 ± 1.61). A self-report structured questionnaire containing questions regarding demographic information and Internet gaming use characteristics, the Video Gaming Dependency Scale, and the Chinese Big Five Inventory-brief version, was used in the study.Results: The prevalence of IGD among Chinese adolescent game players was 17.0%. All participants were divided into the IGD group (males/females = 751/333, mean age: 19.74 ± 1.85) or the non-IGD group (males/females = 2,950/2,345, mean age: 19.27 ± 1.54). Specifically, twelve factors were significantly associated with IGD (p < 0.001), including neuroticism (β = 0.17), conscientiousness (β = −0.14), Internet gaming time per day (Hour) (β = 0.21), Internet gaming charge per month (Yuan) (β = 0.21), motive: escaping (β = 0.15), motive: sensation seeking (β = 0.13), motive: maintaining (β = 0.08), motive: coping (β = 0.06), having one or two long-term game partners (β = 0.06), male (β = 0.12), undergraduate and above (β = 0.04), and relationship status of couple (β = 0.04).Conclusion: Our findings offer evidence with respect to the prevalence of IGD and its relationships with specific personality traits and Internet gaming characteristics in China. It is necessary for Chinese parents, teachers, and social workers to pay more attention to adolescents' personality traits of high neuroticism and low conscientiousness, long time and high expense they spend on game, as well as their motives.

Abstract:This study assessed the mediating roles of problematic gaming, problematic social media use, and problematic smartphone use in the associations between psychological distress and screen time use among primary school children during the school hiatus due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Students (<i>n</i> = 2,026; mean [standard deviation] age = 10.71 years [1.07]; 1,011 [49.9 percent] girls) in Sichuan, China completed a cross-sectional online survey, and this study was approved by the ethics committee of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (IRB ref: HSEARS20190718001). The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short Form, Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, and Smartphone Application-Based Addiction Scale were used to assess problematic gaming, social media use, and smartphone use. The Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 was used to assess distress, and an item rated on a 0–10 scale was included to assess fear of being infected by COVID-19. Fear of being infected by COVID-19 was assessed because this could be a confounding variable in the association between psychological distress and screen time use. Increased time spent on gaming, social media, and smartphones was associated with greater problematic gaming, problematic social media use, problematic smartphone use, and psychological distress, but was not associated with fear of COVID-19 infection. Mediation analyses showed that problematic gaming, problematic social media use, and problematic smartphone use were significant mediators in the association between psychological distress and increased time spent on Internet-related activities during the COVID-19 outbreak period. Children who had psychological distress during COVID-19 outbreak might have spent longer time on Internet-related activities due to the school hiatus and problematic use of Internet-related activities. Parents/caregivers are recommended to monitor their children's use of Internet while encouraging children to engage in positive activities to ease the concern of negative psychological responses during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:Adolescents are found to be more susceptible to being addicted to the smartphone than other demographics. This research was designed to investigate adolescent smartphone addiction among a national sample of 1732 middle school and high school students in China, geographically distributed among metropolises, country-level cities, and small town/rural areas. Multiple linear regression analysis of cross-sectional survey data indicates that important predictors of smartphone addiction include smartphone-based mobile gaming, extended hours spent on the smartphone, and single-family parenting. An age effect was identified in that smartphone addictive symptoms went upward as age increased. A number of smartphone-based activities, such as mobile shopping, selfie-taking, and short video and livestreaming, also contributed significantly to the smartphone addiction scores. It was also found that a special cohort of hitchhikers who mostly rely on using others' devices displayed a higher tendency to develop addictive symptoms. Findings were discussed in relevance to a broad base of research in relation to adolescent problematic smartphone use in cross-national settings.

Abstract:Introduction Although mobile devices are used ubiquitously, studies on their detrimental effects on preschoolers are limited. Furthermore, no study has considered shared reading and mobile device usage simultaneously. Therefore, this study examined the effects of mobile devices and shared reading on preschoolers’ development along with the effects of maternal depression on this association. Materials and methods Mothers of 202 children aged 2–5 years were recruited in Taiwan. Maternal self-reported questionnaires on mobile device usage, shared reading, and child’s emotional and behavioral development were collected. Multiple linear regression models were used for analyses. Results Mothers’ higher usage time on mobile devices and an education level of college or less were significantly associated with the child’s exceeding recommended use of mobile devices. Particularly among depressed mothers, preschoolers’ exceeding recommended use of mobile devices was associated with more sleep (β = 9.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.34, 18.40) and attention (β = 7.20, 95% CI = 1.50, 12.91) problems, whereas shared reading was associated with less somatic complaints (β = −16.19, 95% CI = −32.22, −0.15) and withdrawn (β = −21.50, 95% CI = −40.52, −2.47), compared with their respective counterparts. Conclusion Our study suggested the beneficial effects of shared reading. Moreover, we highlighted the adverse effects of preschoolers’ exceeding recommended use of mobile device on sleep and attention problems, especially for children of mothers with depression.

Psychological distress and aggression among adolescents with internet gaming disorder symptoms

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the current situation of internet gaming disorder (IGD) in Chinese adolescents and explore the impact of IGD-related factors on adolescent aggression. We hypothesized that IGD symptoms in adolescents would be associated with aggressive behavior and that risk factors for IGD symptoms could increase the aggressive tendencies of adolescents. To verify the above hypothesis, a cross-sectional survey of junior and senior high school students from southern, southwestern, central, and eastern China was conducted. A total of 9306 valid questionnaires were collected. The results showed that the prevalence of IGD symptoms was 1.78 % among Chinese adolescents. The adolescents in the disordered gamer group had the most severe IGD symptoms, with the highest levels of psychological distress and aggression. Interestingly, adolescents in the casual gamer group had the lowest psychological distress and aggression scores. Linear regression analysis further showed that higher levels of aggression were significantly associated with male sex, younger age, more severe psychological distress and IGD symptoms, and more violent game exposure. Our results suggested that excessive online gaming not only contributes to psychological distress in adolescents but also increases their levels of aggressive behavior. Apart from male sex and younger age, severe IGD symptoms and psychological distress are the most important predictors of the development of aggressive behavior.

Abstract:This study examines adolescent game usage and corresponding health-related risk behaviors during a period of limited social interaction and activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants included 225 middle- and 225 high-school students in Seoul who completed a survey online from October 1 to 30, 2021. The study measured participants' game usage level and the health-related risk behavior index. Findings showed that participants who engaged in excessive gaming showed higher levels of health-related risk behaviors. A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted to compare the health-related risk behaviors of students in the general, potential, and high-risk groups on excessive gaming. Results indicated that female students in the high-risk group showed higher stress levels and fatigue ( f = 5.549, p .05, Cohen's d = 0.009) than females. The post hoc test indicated clear sex distinctions among the general, potential, and high-risk groups on excessive gaming ( p < .001). Among the high-risk game usage group, female students displayed a higher level of risk behaviors than males. Adolescent gaming addiction should be considered an emotional and behavioral disorder for which parental guidance and support are needed, and counseling experts and professionals must come together to provide a cure and reform program.

Abstract:Separation of the endodontic instrument within the root canal system and sharp injuries to the dentist is not an uncommon event in endodontic practice. Although root canal instruments can fracture at any stage of endodontic treatment, its fracture within the dentist's hand is a very rare event. An unusual case of accidental separation and lodgment of rotary endodontic file in the dentist's thumb is presented along with its management. A 33-year-old dentist reported with an accidental lodgment of rotary endodontic file into his thumb. The fractured instrument was removed successfully by a surgeon. The present case describes a rare event of occupational risk in endodontic practice.
The Implications of Video Games on Social Behaviors of Adolescents in China

Abstract:This paper uses an online survey method based on 54 Chinese adolescents aged 10 to 19, semi-structured interviews with 4 girls from middle school and high school, and a secondary literature study to examine the potential impacts of playing electronic games on Chinese adolescents’ social behaviors. The paper mainly focuses on three representative components of social behaviors from the perspective of a teenager: relationship with their peers and family members, as well as aggression. The research reveals that playing video games can lead to the formation of friendship, and will not necessarily result in aggressive behaviors, because it could be influenced and controlled by other factors, with proper family education being the most important one. Most Chinese parents regard playing electronic games as a bad habit for young people, and the result found that video games could trigger family quarrels and put certain psychological burdens on adolescents, though the reasons behind are vary under different circumstances.

Abstract:Background: The growing popularity and frequency of online game use have resulted in a large number of studies reporting various mental problems associated with game abuse in adolescents. In this article, we examined the prevalence of gaming disorder (GD) and explored the associations of GD with anxiety and insomnia symptoms in minority youth in China. Methods: A total of 1494 students completed the Problematic Online Gaming Questionnaire Short-Form (POGQ-SF), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item questionnaire (GAD-7), and Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS). Chi-square and binary logistic regression analyses were used to explore the associations between gaming disorder and anxiety/insomnia. Results: A total of 356 (23.83%) respondents reported that they had gaming disorder. Chi-square analysis showed that gender, grade, marital status of parents and exercise situation were significantly associated with GD. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that those who had GD were at significantly higher risk for anxiety and insomnia than those without GD. Conclusion: We found a high incidence of GD and a positive association among anxiety, insomnia and GD. Thus, special attention should be paid to those who have suffered from GD. It is worth addressing the adverse effects of GD on anxiety and insomnia.
Predicting the Time Spent Playing Computer and Mobile Games among Medical Undergraduate Students Using Interpersonal Relations and Social Cognitive Theory: A Cross-Sectional Survey in Chongqing, China

Abstract:Background: Computer and mobile games are widely used among undergraduate students worldwide, especially in China. Our objective was to predict the time spent playing computer and mobile games based on interpersonal relations and social cognitive theory constructs (i.e., expectation, self-efficacy, and self-control). Methods: The cross-sectional survey was conducted in two medical universities using a sample of 1557 undergraduate students recruited by cluster sampling. The five-point Likert questionnaire was jointly developed by researchers from Chongqing Medical University and Jackson State University. Results: Approximately 30% and 70% of the students played computer and mobile games, respectively. The daily times spent by participants on computer games were 25.61 ± 73.60 min (weekdays) and 49.96 ± 128.60 min (weekends), and 66.07 ± 154.65 min (weekdays) and 91.82 ± 172.94 min (weekends) on mobile games. Students with high scores of interpersonal relations but low scores of self-efficacy spent prolonged time playing computer games on weekdays and weekends (p < 0.05 for all). Students with low scores of expectation spent prolonged time playing computer games on weekdays (p < 0.05). Students with high scores of interpersonal relations but low scores of self-efficacy and self-control spent prolonged time playing mobile games on weekdays and weekends (p < 0.05 for all). Conclusions: The prevalence and duration of playing mobile games were higher than those of playing computer games among medical undergraduate students in Chongqing, China. This study determined the interpersonal relations, self-efficacy, self-control, and expectation of the students at the time of playing computer and mobile games. Future studies may consider studying the interaction among game-related behaviours, environments, and personality characteristics.

Longitudinal Relationships Between School Climate, Academic Achievement, and Gaming Disorder Symptoms Among Chinese Adolescents

Abstract:Despite growing concerns regarding the development of gaming disorder symptoms among adolescents, the longitudinal relationship between school factors and gaming disorder symptoms remains far from being fully understood. This two-year longitudinal study examined the relationship between school climate perceptions, academic achievement, and gaming disorder symptoms among three distinct demographic cohorts: preadolescents (n = 1513; 46.9% girls, Mage = 10.64 years, SD = 0.56), early adolescents (n = 1771; 48.3% girls, Mage = 13.54 years, SD = 0.70), and late adolescents (n = 2385; 50.1% girls, Mage = 16.41 years, SD = 0.59). A four-wave study was conducted (six months apart) using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPMs) to separate the within-person (state level) from the between-person (trait level) effects. The results obtained from the RI-CLPMs indicated that fluctuations in school climate perceptions negatively predicted subsequent changes in gaming disorder symptoms among preadolescents at the within-person level, but not among early and late adolescents. Fluctuations relating to gaming disorder symptoms also negatively predicted subsequent changes regarding academic achievement in late adolescents, but not in preadolescents and early adolescents. The effect of school-related factors on gaming disorder symptoms varies across different developmental stages. While preadolescents may represent a particularly susceptible subgroup for gaming disorder in terms of being predicted by their school environment, late adolescents appear to be more vulnerable to predictors of gaming disorder symptoms. The current study also discusses the implications of school-wide programs aimed at improving school climate and preventing the development of gaming disorder symptoms during key developmental periods.

The interplay of psychological resilience and adolescent mobile phone addiction in Henan province, China: insights from latent class analysis

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to classify distinct subgroups of adolescents based on the severity levels of their mobile phone addiction and to investigate how these groups differed in terms of their psychosocial characteristics. We surveyed a total of 2,230 adolescents using three different questionnaires to assess the severity of their mobile phone addiction, stress, anxiety, depression, psychological resilience, and personality. Latent class analysis was employed to identify the subgroups, and we utilized Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves and multinomial logistic regression for statistical analysis. All data analyses were conducted using SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.5. Methods: We classified the subjects into subgroups based on their mobile phone addiction severity, and the results revealed a clear pattern with a three-class model based on the likelihood level of mobile phone addiction (p < 0.05). We examined common trends in psychosocial traits such as age, grade at school, parental education level, anxiety levels, and resilience. ROC analysis of sensitivity versus 1-specificity for various mobile phone addiction index (MPAI) scores yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.893 (95% CI, 0.879 to 0.905, p < 0.001). We also determined diagnostic value indices for potential cutoff points ranging from 8 to 40. The optimal cutoff value for MPAI was found to be >14, which corresponded to the maximum Youden index (Youden index = 0.751). Results: The latent classification process in this research confirmed the existence of three distinct mobile phone user groups. We also examined the psychosocial characteristics that varied in relation to the severity levels of addiction. Conclusion: This study provides valuable insights into the categorization of adolescents based on the severity of mobile phone addiction and sheds light on the psychosocial characteristics associated with different addiction levels. These findings are expected to enhance our understanding of mobile phone addiction traits and stimulate further research in this area.
