Abstract:Electronic cigarettes (vapes) are actively used, and their use is growing globally, especially among young people. Its spread is rapid due to the presence of unproven rumors that it is used to treat smoking addiction as it aids in smoking cessation. However, E.C has a negative impact on dental health by affecting the oral microbiome and salivary components. The goal of this study was to evaluate the impact of electronic cigarettes on dental caries in relation to glucosyltransferase B and secretory immunoglobulin in the saliva of electronic cigarette users. Ninety active males were divided into two groups: 45 electronic-cigarette smokers in addition to 45 non-electronic-cigarette smokers as a control group. An oral examination was performed on the studied groups, and decayed missing filling tooth surfaces (DMFS) were documented. Additionally, unstimulated saliva was collected to evaluate salivary glucosyltransferase B and secretory immunoglobulin A by using a sandwich enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). The obtained outcomes showed that decayed, missing, and filled Surfaces values(DMFS), salivary glucosyltransferase B, and salivary secretory immunoglobulin A were greater in the study group than in control group. Additionally, a correlation between glucosyltransferase B, secretory immunoglobulin A, and DMFS was positive and significant. It was concluded that e-cigarettes may have an effect on saliva components and dental caries.

Abstract:Introduction: Tobacco use is one of the main causes of periodontitis. E-cigarette are gaining in popularity, and studies are needed to better understand the impact of e-cigarettes on oral health. Objective: To perform a longitudinal study to evaluate the adverse effects of e-cigarettes on periodontal health. Methods: Naïve E-cigarette users, cigarette smokers, and non-smokers were recruited using newspaper and social media. Age, gender, and ethnicity, were recorded. Participants were scheduled for two visits 6 months apart. At each visit, we collected data on the frequency and magnitude of e-cigarette and cigarette use, and alcohol consumption. Carbon monoxide (CO) levels, cotinine levels, salivary flow rate, periodontal probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BoP), and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were also determined at both baseline and follow-up visits and compared between groups with two-way repeated measures ANOVA. Periodontal diagnosis and other categorical variables were compared between groups with the chi-square statistic and logistic regression. Results: We screened 159 subjects and recruited 119 subjects. One-hundred-one subjects (31 cigarette smokers, 32 e-cigarette smokers, and 38 non-smokers) completed every assessment in both visits. The retention and compliance rate of subjects was 84.9%. The use of social media and craigslist was significant in recruiting e-cigarette subjects. Ethnicity and race differed between groups, as did average age in the male subjects. Carbon monoxide and salivary cotinine levels were highest among cigarette smokers. Bleeding on probing and average PDs similarly increased over time in all three groups, but CAL uniquely increased in e-cigarette smokers. Rates of severe periodontal disease were higher in cigarette smokers and e-cigarette users than non-smokers, but interpretation is confounded by the older age of the cigarette smokers. Conclusion: Among the recruited participants, CAL after 6 months was significantly worse only in the e-cigarette smokers. This study design and protocol will assist in future larger studies on e-cigarette and oral health.

Abstract:ObjectiveMany studies have been conducted to understand the association between e-cigarette use and different periodontal parameters, but the effect of conventional smoking in explaining this association remain to be elucidated. This study aimed to assess the association between e-cigarettes and self-reported periodontal disease, and whether smoking status explains this association.MethodsThis cross-sectional study was based on secondary data analysis of 8,129 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) 2015 -2018. E-cigarette use and smoking status were collected through questionnaires. Self-reported periodontal diseases and bone loss were derived from the 8-item CDC/AAP questionnaire. The associations between e-cigarette use and self-reported periodontal diseases were tested in logistic regression models adjusting for demographic factors, socioeconomic indicators, smoking status, diabetes and dental visits. Additionally, to test the effect of smoking on the relationship, three fully adjusted logistic regression models stratified by smoking status were constructed.ResultsE-cigarettes ever users and current users had higher odds of self-reported periodontal disease (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.18, 1.73) and bone loss (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.30, 2.49) respectively compared to non-users after adjusting for smoking and potential confounders. In the regression models stratified by smoking status, e-cigarette was only significantly associated with self-reported periodontal disease variables among current smokers, but not among previous or never smokers.ConclusionE-cigarette use is associated with self-reported periodontal disease. However, smoking status appears to explain the relationship between e-cigarette use and periodontal disease.Clinical SignificanceThis population-based cross-sectional study shows that e-cigarette use is associated with self-reported periodontal disease. Smoking status appears to explain the association. Dental professionals should consider the effect of conventional smoking and comprehend the risks of e-cigarette on oral health and its benefits when used as a smoking cessation aid.

Abstract:Objectives: To compare the adverse effect of e-cigarettes and conventional cigarette smoking on periodontal health. Materials and methods: Sixty participants were split into two groups of 30 each (Group A-traditional cigarettes and Group B-e-cigarette smokers). Socio-demographic data, smoking, and oral health status were gathered using a self-administered questionnaire. Gingival index (GI), Russell's periodontal index, and clinical attachment loss (CAL) were recorded in patients of both the groups. Results: The mean GI (1.79), periodontal index (5.92), and CAL (3.44) were higher in patients using traditional cigarettes than e-cigarettes. The questionnaire revealed that patients using traditional cigarettes had bleeding gums (32.22%), pus in the gums (39.22%), extracted teeth due to mobility (59.65%), discolored tooth (89.66%), and tongue (71.76%), which was more than e-cigarette smokers. Conclusion: E-cigarette smokers have similar adverse effects on the periodontal tissues but are less as compared to normal cigarette smokers.
The impact of electronic and conventional cigarettes on periodontal health-a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Objectives: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of electronic cigarettes on periodontal health compared to conventional cigarette smoke and a non-smoking population. Materials and methods: MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CENTRAL, and ClinicalTrials.gov were screened for literature. Eligibility criteria included clinical studies published between 2006 and 2022 that compare e-cigarettes and conventional cigarettes on periodontal health (bleeding on probing (BoP), plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), attachment loss (AL), marginal bone loss (MBL), tooth loss, molecular inflammation markers, salivary flow rate). Meta-regression analysis was used to examine the influence of moderator variables. Results: Sixteen studies were found to be eligible for qualitative synthesis. Individual analyses showed that cigarette smokers had significantly higher PI, PD, AL, and MBL and increased concentrations of proinflammatory mediators than e-cigarette users and non-smokers. Meta-analysis revealed a 0.33-fold lower chance for BoP in e-cigarette users compared to smokers (p = 0.03), whereby meta-regression failed to detect any effects regarding the age of users and frequency of smoking. A 0.01-fold decreased chance for positive BoP in e-cigarette users compared with non-smokers was seen (p < 0.01). Conclusions: The current findings suggest that that e-cigarette use might be considered a healthier alternative to cigarette smoking concerning periodontal health. Even so, harmful effects of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) usage on periodontal health were seen as well. However, a definitive decision on this research question remains elusive due to the absence of randomized controlled trials. Clinical relevance: Electronic cigarettes, marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes, are becoming increasingly popular. Evidence on the use of electronic cigarettes as a cessation aid and its beneficial impact compared to cigarette smoke remains inconclusive, so the analysis conducted in this review addresses a recent question of high clinical relevance.
Plastic scintillation dosimetry: optimal selection of scintillating fibers and scintillators.

Abstract:Scintillation dosimetry is a promising avenue for evaluating dose patterns delivered by intensity-modulated radiation therapy plans or for the small fields involved in stereotactic radiosurgery. However, the increase in signal has been the goal for many authors. In this paper, a comparison is made between plastic scintillating fibers and plastic scintillator. The collection of scintillation light was measured experimentally for four commercial models of scintillating fibers (BCF-12, BCF-60, SCSF-78, SCSF-3HF) and two models of plastic scintillators (BC-400, BC-408). The emission spectra of all six scintillators were obtained by using an optical spectrum analyzer and they were compared with theoretical behavior. For scintillation in the blue region, the signal intensity of a singly clad scintillating fiber (BCF-12) was 120% of that of the plastic scintillator (BC-400). For the multiclad fiber (SCSF-78), the signal reached 144% of that of the plastic scintillator. The intensity of the green scintillating fibers was lower than that of the plastic scintillator: 47% for the singly clad fiber (BCF-60) and 77% for the multiclad fiber (SCSF-3HF). The collected light was studied as a function of the scintillator length and radius for a cylindrical probe. We found that symmetric detectors with nearly the same spatial resolution in each direction (2 mm in diameter by 3 mm in length) could be made with a signal equivalent to those of the more commonly used asymmetric scintillators. With augmentation of the signal-to-noise ratio in consideration, this paper presents a series of comparisons that should provide insight into selection of a scintillator type and volume for development of a medical dosimeter.

Abstract:In the last decade there has been a significant increase in the appeal and popularity of e-cigarettes. Recent national news headlines outline that one million smokers will be given a free vaping starter kit to encourage them to give up tobacco products. An independent report commissioned by the UK Government has cited promotion of vaping as a critical recommendation to ensuring England is smoke-free by 2030. Undoubtedly, the dental team will now encounter many more questions from patients keen to know more regarding the safety of electronic nicotine delivery systems and their effects on the oral cavity. However, it is often difficult to answer these questions due to a lack of evidence regarding their impact. Although there are some preliminary animal and in vitro data, additional well-designed, long-term studies are required to investigate oral health outcomes of e-cigarette use.We aim to summarise the latest evidence to better inform clinicians about the effects of vaping on oral health, particularly regarding the risks of oral cancer, so they can better inform their patients.

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of e-cigarette use ("vaping") among youth has emerged as a public health concern. We aim to explore vape use, knowledge levels, and correlates in a sample of Australian young adults. Participants from six residential university colleges in Queensland, Australia, were invited to complete an online survey. The sample included 716 students ( M age =18.1 years). Correlates of vape use and knowledge examined included socio-demographic variables, other substance use, and mental health, including PHQ-9 depression and GAD-7 anxiety. In our sample, 62% of students reported lifetime vaping. Just under half (47.5%) of the sample had used flavour with nicotine vapes, 18.0% had used flavour only, and 2.8% had used other drugs. Past month vaping rates were low at 4.2% for daily use of flavour with nicotine vapes. Co-use of cigarettes was observed with nicotine vapes but most only vaped occasionally. A substantial proportion lacked knowledge about the legality (37.4%) and health harms (25.4%) of vapes. Males had higher odds of vaping. Use of cigarettes, binge drinking, and cannabis use were associated with vaping. While the co-use of cigarettes with nicotine vapes was observed, this was generally only seen among those who vaped occasionally. A notable knowledge gap existed regarding the legality and awareness of the health harms of vaping, signalling a need for educational initiatives. Future research should continue to monitor emerging vaping trends and long-term outcomes. The project was pre-registered on the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (registration number: ACTRN12622000239763).

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate oral alterations among university students and explore possible associations with tobacco consumption in its various forms. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 phases: the first phase involved administering an electronic questionnaire to participants determine the prevalence of tobacco use and the second phase involved a physical examination of the participants. The participants were grouped on the basis of their reported habits and compared using statistical analysis (P < .05). Results: Of the 620 participants, 57.1% reported using tobacco in some form, with 47.4% reporting electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use. In the clinical phase, comparing the presence of oral changes in tobacco users vs nonusers, e-cigarette users had a higher proportion of white-spot caries lesions (P = .041) and gingivitis (P = .012). When e-cigarette use was combined with other forms of tobacco use, additional oral changes were more prevalent, including coated tongue and nicotinic stomatitis (P < .05). Conclusions: The use of alternative forms of tobacco consumption is common among university students, with e-cigarette use being the most prevalent form, and may lead to detrimental effects on the oral cavity, such as caries and gingivitis, particularly when used in conjunction with other tobacco products. Practical implications: The use of tobacco in alternative forms, such as e-cigarettes, can affect oral health directly or indirectly. Dentists should be familiar with the characteristics of this population and the potential oral repercussions associated with tobacco use to address the impact on health and raise awareness of the associated risks.

Abstract:Electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) simulates the act of tobacco smoking by vaporizing a mixture of propylene glycol, nicotine, and flavoring agents. e-cigarette has been proposed as a product able to aid to stop smoking. The aim of the study is to verify the clinical variations of periodontal health induced by e-cigarettes use and, moreover, to investigate about the awareness of the e-smokers about their health variations and about their hypothetical need to turn back to smoke combustible cigarettes.This clinical observational pilot study involved 110 out of 350 smokers, who switched to e-cigarette. Patients were subjected to oral examinations. A questionnaire to self-assess the variations of some parameters of general health, and to self-assess the need to smoke combustible cigarettes, was distributed to such subjects involved in the study.At the end of the study, we registered a progressive improvement in the periodontal indexes, as well as in the general health perception. Finally, many patients reported an interesting reduction in the need to smoke.In the light of this pilot study, the e-cigarette can be considered as a valuable alternative to tobacco cigarettes, but with a positive impact on periodontal and general health status.

Abstract:The use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) has exploded, especially among teenagers and new smokers, amid widespread awareness of the dangers of traditional tobacco and restrictions on smoking. However, the risk effects of ENDS on physical health, especially oral health, are still ambiguous. The purpose of this study was to review the available evidence on risks of ENDS on oral health, and compares the differences between ENDS and traditional cigarettes. For heavy smokers, transferring the addiction of tobacco to ENDS can be less harmful to periodontal condition and physical health but is not completely without risk. The components of ENDS vapor have cytotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic properties, and its usage may be associated with a wide range of oral health sequelae. The chemicals in ENDS increase the susceptibility to tooth decay, increase the risk of periodontal disease, peri-implant, and oral mucosal lesions. Nicotine aerosols from ENDS can be a potential risk factor for oral cancer due to the presence of carcinogenic components. Compared to smoking traditional cigarettes, the harm associated with ENDS use may be underestimated due to the reduced ability to control vaping behavior, ease of ENDS access, fewer vaping area restrictions, and better taste. Currently, the available evidence suggests that ENDS may be a safer alternative to traditional tobacco products. Though most oral symptoms experienced by ENDS users are relatively mild and temporary compared to traditional cigarettes, the dangers of ENDS still exist. However, further research with longer follow-up periods is required to establish the long-term safety of ENDS.

Abstract:Abstract Background E-cigarettes have emerged as popular products, especially for younger populations. However, concerns regarding health effects exist and there is a notable gap in understanding the prevalence and nature of adverse events. This study aims to examine the rate of adverse events in individuals who use e-cigarettes in a large sample. Methods A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a sample of 4695 current and former e-cigarette users with a median age of 34 years. The survey collected data on e-cigarette use, adverse events experienced, product characteristics, related behaviors, sociodemographic factors and presence of medical comorbidities. Statistical analyses were conducted using Pearson’s chi-squared tests and logistic regression. Results A total of 78.9% of respondents reported experiencing an adverse event within 6 h of using a vaping device, with the most common events being headache, anxiety and coughing. Product characteristics and related behaviors significantly influenced the risk of adverse events. There were also sociodemographic disparities, with Hispanic respondents and those with at least college-level education reporting higher rates of adverse events. Conclusions Our study found a high rate of adverse events among e-cigarette users. We identified that certain e-cigarette product characteristics, behaviors and medical comorbidities significantly increased the risk of these events.

Abstract:Tobacco cigarette smoking is a well-established risk factor for oral diseases, especially periodontal diseases. Over the past few years, electronic cigarettes (or "E-cigarettes") have gained popularity. There is some evidence that e-cigarettes may play a role in helping people quit smoking, and they are occasionally seen as a less dangerous alternative to tobacco use. However, there are worries about their effects on health, notably in terms of oral health and the emergence of periodontal disease. Limited information is available regarding the effect on oral disease. E-cigarettes come in a variety of nicotine strengths and flavoring combinations, all of which have been associated with detrimental oral health issues. A growing body of research supports the idea that vaping or using electronic cigarettes may increase the chance of developing oral health problems such as tooth decay, gum disease, periodontal disease, cracked or broken teeth, and pain in the tongue or inside of the cheek. Even if e-cigarettes were less harmful, they still could lead to the development of periodontal diseases through the decreased antioxidant capacity of saliva, the inflammatory effect, cell injury, and impaired reparability. High levels of nicotine content and menthol-favoring additives increase risk of periodontal damage in e-cigarette users. However, conflicting study results are also published for smokers who transitioned to e-cigarettes. Even though benefits or value of e-cigarettes as a substitute for tobacco cigarettes are still unknown, their impact on periodontal and general health status is still prominent.

The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between EC use and oral health, including 'gingival pain and/or bleeding', 'tongue and/or inside-cheek pain', and 'cracked or broken teeth' among adolescents.METHODS: A total of 65,528 students in 2016 were included in this cross-sectional study.RESULTS: For EC use, 0.5% (n = 297) students were daily users, 1.9% (n = 1259) were '1 to 29 days past month users', and 5.9% (n = 3848) were former users. Overall, 18.5% students reported they had experienced 'gingival pain and/or bleeding', 11.0% reported 'tongue and/or inside-cheek pain', and 11.4% reported a 'cracked or broken tooth' within the past 12 months. When comparing 'daily EC users', '1 to 29 days past month EC users', and 'former EC users' with 'never EC users', the adjusted ORs for 'cracked or broken tooth' were 1.65 (95% CI: 1.19-2.27), 1.26 (95% CI: 1.06-1.51), and 1.16 (95% CI: 1.04-1.30), respectively. Comparing 'daily EC users' with 'never EC users', the adjusted OR for 'tongue and/or inside-cheek pain' was 1.54 (1.05-2.26). However, EC use among adolescents was not associated with 'gingival pain and/or bleeding' when adjusted for the potential confounders.CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results, the odds of cracked or broken teeth among daily, '1 to 29 days past month', and former EC users were significantly higher than those among never EC users. The odds of tongue and/or inside-cheek pain among daily EC users were significantly higher than those among never EC users. In conclusion, the results suggest that daily EC use among adolescents may be a risk factor for cracked or broken teeth and tongue and/or inside-cheek pain.

Abstract:Objectives Initially marketed for smoking cessation, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are commonly regarded as safer than combustible cigarettes because they usually contain less nicotine and do not use combustion. However, few studies have examined the health effects of e-cigarettes. The objective of this study was to examine whether e-cigarette use had a differential effect on the prevalence of lung disease among current, former, and never tobacco users. Methods We analyzed data from respondents aged ≥18 (n = 45 908) who responded to questions about e-cigarette use and lung disease in the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey. We calculated crude odd ratios (ORs) and ORs adjusted by 15 sociodemographic and health behavior factors: age, sex, race/ethnicity, annual household income, health insurance, personal physician, health status, body mass index, education, marital status, exercise, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, tobacco chewing, and metropolitan status. Results We found a significant association between e-cigarette use and lung disease, which was significantly modified by tobacco use. Among never tobacco users, the adjusted odds of reporting lung disease were 4.36 (95% CI, 1.76-10.77) times higher among everyday e-cigarette users than among never e-cigarette users. Among current tobacco users, the adjusted odds of reporting lung disease were 1.47 (95% CI, 1.13-1.92) times higher among everyday e-cigarette users than among never e-cigarette users. Conclusions People who have never smoked combustible cigarettes should refrain from starting e-cigarettes, because e-cigarettes carry a significant risk of lung disease independent of tobacco smoking. Additional prospective research into the harmful effects of e-cigarettes would help to further elucidate this link.

Abstract:Electronic cigarettes are marketed as a safer alternative to regular (combustible) cigarettes, based on the claim that there is no tobacco burning and fewer toxic chemicals in their vapor. However, recent evidence challenges the notion that e-cigarette aerosols are benign. Heating of compounds in e-liquids to high temperatures can lead to the release of toxic compounds in e-cigarette aerosols. However, users and the public may not be aware of these unique harms, impacting their perception of harm from using e-cigarettes. This research explored the perceptions of harm of e-cigarettes compared to regular cigarettes among 418 college students, aged 18–34, by employing a Qualtrics based smartphone survey. The findings revealed a vaping prevalence of 16.7% among our study population, indicating e-cigarette use among college aged young adults is at concerning levels. Perceptions of harm varied significantly by vaping status, sex, and field of study. Non-e-cigarette users and female students were less likely to perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes. Among e-cigarette users (vapers), male vapers and users of pod-type devices, such as JUUL and disposables, were more inclined to view e-cigarettes as less harmful. Among vapers, students in non-health-related fields were significantly more likely to perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful than regular cigarettes, underscoring the impact of educational background on health risk awareness. In conclusion, this study provides crucial insights into the varied perceptions of e-cigarettes among young adults. The results emphasize the need for targeted public health interventions and educational efforts to address this growing public health concern.
