Abstract:The contribution deals with is the material selection for spiroid gear. The combination of the softer material of one wheel with the harder material of the other wheel (or gear worm) is used for the trains of gears. The measurements were executed on the measurement stand comprising the machine aggregate with the spiroid drive. In Stage 1 of measurement, the spiroid gear was made of the steel gear worm and of the bronze wheel, in Stage 2 of measurements, it was made of the steel gear worm and of the plastic wheel. The efficiency was evaluated for various levels of the load moment, lubrication and material type used.

Abstract:Abstract The substantiated dimensionless criterion of jamming characterizes relationship between the temperature of the contact links of spiroid gearing and the load-bearing capacity of an oil film. Based on the review of the existing tribotechnical systems used in scoring resistance testing, a physical model of spiroid gearing is selected. The test data obtained on a rolling-and-disc scheme of a friction assembly are presented. The relations between the friction coefficient in the spiroid gearing and the unit load are determined for the steel–steel material couples in a range of slip velocities and temperatures. A design procedure for spiroid gearing with respect to jamming is proposed.

Abstract:Frictional power losses of high-speed and heavy-load herringbone gearboxes increase the temperature of the gearbox. Thus, real-time surface temperature measurement is significant for evaluating the gearbox lubrication design. A rotating gear test rig with an infrared pyrometer is developed in this paper to conduct real-time and accurate temperature measurements of the transverse plane of the oil-jet-lubrication herringbone gear. First, the influencing factors and measuring errors of surface temperature are analyzed using the infrared pyrometer. The emissivity of the measured surface of a gear tooth painted with matte black is experimentally calibrated. Second, the temperature measurement tests of the oil-jet-lubrication herringbone gear under different conditions are carried out. Measurement errors resulting from purge air pressure, purge air temperature, and oil-jet temperature are also experimentally studied. The results indicate that the purge gas flow can reduce the measurement errors of the infrared pyrometer resulting from oil mist with an appropriate purge air pressure and purge air temperature. Finally, a mathematical curve-fitting of the measurement results between the infrared pyrometer and thermocouple is carried out. The calculated temperatures by the curve-fitting formula are compared with the measured thermocouple temperature, with the relative differences being less than 1 °C. Thus, the curve-fitting formula is credible for the real-time measurement of surface temperature, while the relevant measuring method is also valuable for engineering applications of high-speed gear systems under oil-jet-lubrication conditions.

Abstract:Helical gears have long been known as one of the most commonly used mechanical components in transmitting power. Recently, the power to be transmitted has become large, and the engine speed is also increasing. However, the lubrication condition and the surface temperature that dominate the failure of the helical gear are complicated and not fully understood. Since the surface failure is influenced by temperatures in the tooth contacts, it is very important to know the surface temperatures of gears in operation. However, measuring the surface temperatures of gears in operation is difficult. As an effective means to measure the surface temperatures, method using dissimilar metals is known. The voltage proportional to surface temperatures was produced by contacting dissimilar metals. This is known as Seebeck effect. In this study, S55C (Carbon steel) and SUS316 (Stainless steel) were selected to dissimilar metals. Both dissimilar metals were heat-treated and surface were hardened. SUS316 was vacuum carburizing process and S55C was performed induction hardening. In order to remove the influence multiple meshing, the gear was designed so that the total contact ratio which is the sum of transverse contact ratio and the overlap contact ratio was less than 2. This result secured the area of a single contact zone. Surface temperatures measurement using hardened helical gears succeeded in the area of single contact zone. When we compared the experimental values and the theoretical values using Blok’s formula considering with lengthwise sliding velocity, surface temperatures on gear teeth were largely same.
Positioning Accuracy Investigations in Face Spiroid Gears

Abstract:There are two basic methods of forming the face spiroid gears. The first one, well known, is based on cutting the gear with multi-point cutting tool on the gear hobbing machine. The second method is based on machining with single-point cutting tool applying continuous indexing on universal NC machine tool and with application of NC rotary table. The second method is recommended for piece production because of the simple, cheap and universal cutting tool. There is also known the method of forming the face gears with involute tooth line obtained by machining with the inclined tool axis in relation to the face surface of the gear. The methods of forming face toothing in spiroid gear with the tool axis parallel to gear surface (according to author’s proposal) has been presented in the article. In this method the tool axis is located against the machined wheel at the same position as the worm is located in the gear and this is the greatest advantage of this method. For both methods there have been elaborated special machining programs for four axis NC milling machine of FYN 50ND type, together with NC rotary table of FNd-400 type. Then the obtained gears have been tested and investigated. Three types of such gears have been investigated, all of them with ratio 1:90. Two versions of the face spiroid gears have been assembled in the rotary table and then positioning accuracy has been measured. Additionally, for comparison reasons, the double pitch worm gear has been investigated using the same measuring instruments. There have been presented the chosen accuracy investigation of the gears in the range of one full rotation of the spiroid wheel that is connected with table disc (measurement by 4°) and in the range of two worm rotations (measurement by 0,1°) General evaluation of the chosen methods concerning the manufacturing of the face wheels in spiroid gears has been presented too. The data have been obtained from literature and from author’s own researches.

In gear transmission, the continuous meshing of the teeth will lead to an increase in their temperature, which will have a certain impact on the working performance of the tooth surface. In order to explore the failure-bearing capacity of gears under dry-running conditions, temperature effects were considered in existing methods for determining tooth surface failure, making it more suitable for high-temperature working conditions caused by a lack of lubrication. The failure situation of gears within 35 min after losing lubrication was analyzed. The results indicate that when the gear loses lubrication, the tooth surface temperature of the gear pair has exceeded the material melting point after working at an input power of 2000 kW for 12 min. But when the power drops to 1000 kW, the instantaneous temperatures of the driving and driven gear tooth surfaces at the end of 35 min reach 1090 and 995°C, respectively, which are lower than the scuffing temperature of the tooth surface. The cumulative wear depths of the driving and driven gear tooth surfaces at the end of 35 min were 239 and 86.6 um, respectively, which were lower than the failure wear depth of the tooth surface; The allowable contact stress of the gear pair within 35 min is greater than its contact stress, meeting the judgment condition of no pitting failure. This indicates that reducing power can appropriately extend the failure time of gear teeth, thereby improving the ultimate working capacity of gears under dry-running conditions. In addition, a gear dry-running experiment was carried out. By comparing the theoretical calculation results with the measured gear failure degree, it shows that the improved method for determining gear surface failure is effective.

Abstract:Purpose For moderate pressure and high pressure gear pumps, the temperature failure problem of bearings is now of considerable concern because of their heavy loads. However, the compact structure and the efficiency consideration make it extremely difficult to improve the bearing cooling. A self-circulating oil bearing system is developed for gear pumps with self-lubricating bearings to solve this problem. The oil is aspirated in from the low pressure chamber of the gear pump and discharged to the same chamber by using the pressure difference in the journal bearing, thus achieving the self-circulation. Design/methodology/approach An experiment test rig has been built for the feasibility study. The oil flow rate under different speeds has been recorded. Furthermore, the temperatures of the bearings with or without the oil circulation have been compared. Additionally, the oil flow in the test rig has been simulated using computational fluid dynamics codes. Findings The experimental and numerical results agree well. The experimental results indicate that the oil flow rate increases approximately linearly with the speed and the bearing temperature can be lowered successfully. The calculation results indicate that the bearing load capacity is nearly the same. Both the experimental and numerical studies establish that the self-circulating oil bearing system works successfully. Originality value As far as the authors know, it is the first time to find that the self-circulation can be built using the pressure difference in the bearing oil film, and this principle can be applied in the cooling and lubrication of the gear pumps to solve the temperature failure problem.

Abstract:Abstract In gear transmission, temperature rise has a non-negligible impact on the accuracy, noise and transmission efficiency. However, there is no relevant research on the temperature rise of the anti-backlash single-roller enveloping hourglass worm (ASEHW) gear. To solve this problem, based on tribology principle and Hertz contact theory, the thermal power calculation method of the ASEHW gear was proposed for the first time and thermal analysis was carried out by Ansys software. The bulk temperature of the ASEHW gear under four different rotating speed (300 r/min, 600 r/min, 900 r/min, 1200 r/min) is calculated. The main factors causing temperature rise of the ASEHW gear are analyzed theoretically. Meanwhile, an experimental study is performed to verify the simulation results and validate the theory methods. The theory presented in this paper provides a solution for the thermal power calculation of ASEHW gear. This research provides a theoretical basis for further optimization of ASEHW gear.

Abstract:To reduce tooth surface errors and improve the quality of tooth surface morphology for the spiroid face gear manufactured roughly by die-casting, a method of shaving processing for this type of gears was developed. According to the differential geometry and the meshing theory of spatial crossed axes gears, the kinematics of the shaving processing for the spiroid face gear was analyzed, while the cutting velocity of both contact tooth surfaces was derived to illustrate the feasibility of gear shaving. With the designed tooth geometry of the shaving cutter, the simulation of generation of tooth surfaces for the spiroid face gear was developed. Machining experiments for such type gears were performed on a five-axis computer numerical control machine tool (CNC machine) with the axially grooved shaving cutters. The geometric error measurement of the shaved spiroid face gears was determined by D40 CNC gear measuring center. The research results are of sound great significance to improve the engagement and lubrication for the spiroid face gears.

Abstract:Tooth friction force between the mesh teeth is a non-negligible excitation source for gear vibration and noise. However, the accurate measurement of the tooth friction force in mesh is very difficult, especially for helical gears. In this paper, a method for measuring the tooth friction force in helical gears is proposed by using a laser displacement sensor. The tooth friction force is obtained based on the bending deformation and the bending stiffness of the output shaft in the direction of the friction force. System errors of the gearbox are minimized by preload and locking device, and the measurement error is compensated according to the geometric positional relationship of the output shaft with and without the action of the mesh force. Experimental measurement is carried out by using an example of helical gears and compared with theoretical model. Experimental results have been shown that the magnitude and trend of the tooth friction force by measurement are basically the same with the theoretical calculations, which illustrate the effectiveness of the measurement method. It is also observed that both the tooth friction forces from the measurement and the theoretical model change direction twice in one mesh circle.

Abstract:Spur gear is an integral part of transport and technological machines structure. To increase the load ability of the spur gear, chemical heat treatment of the working cogs surfaces is used. Spur gear with chemical heat treatment must be checked for deep contact strength. The article analyzes various methods (according to GOST 21354-87, methods using the generalized criterion of the limit state for structurally inhomogeneous material by Lebedev-Pisarenko, methods from the handbook describing reducers of power machines etc.) for calculating spur and helical gearing for deep contact strength. The author presents all necessary formulas and graphs for the implementation of each methods, and compares the calculations results of these methods with the results of experimental studies of cemented cylindrical rollers for deep contact destruction.

Abstract:Investigating tribological properties of gear materials, surface finishes, coatings, and lubricants in high-speed and high-load contact conditions is integral to the advancement of drivetrain technology. A focused simulation of gear contacts can be accomplished through a ball-on-disc tribometer with precise control over contact parameters such as the entrainment velocity, slide-to-roll ratio, and contact stress while recording the friction coefficient. These capabilities are integral to studying the functional characteristics of lubricants, materials, and surfaces at the specific contact conditions along a gear tooth profile throughout a meshing cycle. Critical failure conditions can be isolated from the varying contact parameters along the profile of a gear tooth to pinpoint the initiation of failure. To perform this evaluation, the gear contact conditions must be understood and lie within the working envelope of the tribometer. This report outlines the contact conditions commonly experienced in power transmission gearing with an emphasis on military drivetrains and relates them to the operating envelope of a ball-on-disc tribometer.
Validation of the Model of Elastoplastic Contact of Spiroid Gears

Abstract:The paper considers the problem of analyzing the elastoplastic contact of teeth in a heavy-loaded low-speed multi-pair spiroid gear. This problem is an integral part of the strength analysis that enables forecasting the load-carrying capacity of the product at the initial stage of its development. The relevance of the considered method and algorithm of calculating the load distribution and plastic strain of teeth is emphasized by its increased productive efficiency as compared to the widely used finite element method. The paper considers a common issue of validation of the developed algorithm, i.e. the correspondence of the obtained solution to the results of a real loading process. The main steps of the algorithm are given with account of the multi-pair contact and macro-roughnesses on the contact flanks that are represented as the set of areas (cells). The coordinates of the cell centers are calculated taking account of the factors influencing the load distribution in the spiroid gearing, such as manufacturing and/or assembly errors, surface micro- and macro-roughnesses, and deformations of the gearbox parts. To validate the algorithm, only one dominating factor — the gearwheel surface undulation — is chosen, since all the other factors are negligibly small. The object of the study is a gear in one of the mass-produced multi-turn spiroid gearboxes for pipeline valves. The criteria for the algorithm validation are formulated, namely, the plastic strain value, the area, shape and arrangement of the pattern of the plastic strain. By analyzing the results of numerical and experimental modeling it is possible to draw a conclusion on the validity of the results obtained by means of the studied numerical method of analysis. The divergence of the plastic strain value obtained experimentally and through calculation was under 10%, and the area of the plastic strain pattern was under 10%.

Abstract:Production of spiroid gears as alternatives to bevel and hypoid ones, when the gear ratio of the spiroid gear should be less than 10 (often less than 6) is traditionally related to problems of manufacturing multi-thread worms and hobs. Different versions of solving this problem in diversified series and mass production are considered. For the first case, improvements of traditional methods of analysis and the production technique are proposed basing on application of multi-thread hobs or multi-tooth assembled running-in cutting heads. For the second case, high production-efficient methods of gear machining of both gear elements are provided; they are implemented at simple and common lathes after their little modification. Features and restrictions of these methods are described. Numerical examples are given for the possible substitution of truck and tram hypoid gears by different versions of spiroid gears providing application of various methods of gearwheel tooth cutting while both keeping the same basic dimensions of parts and mounting dimensions and varying these dimensions. It is noted, that when choosing the parameters of spiroid gearing and machine-tool settings, there are methods of efficient control of operation and layout parameters of the gear, the level of contact localization and tool parameters.
A cyclostationarity-based wear monitoring framework of spur gears in intelligent manufacturing systems

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. The gearbox is widely applied as the mechanical transmission system of intelligent manufacturing systems, such as machine tools and robotics. The harsh working environments make the gear surface prone to wear. The progression of surface wear can bring severe failures to the gear tooth, including gear tooth root crack, surface spalling of gear tooth, and tooth breaking, all of which could damage the whole transmission system. Hence, it is essential to monitor and evaluate the gear surface wear propagation. The gear wear has been proven highly relevant with the vibration second-order cyclostationary (CS2) characteristics. Therefore, this paper develops a novel cyclostationarity-based framework to monitor and evaluate gear wear propagation. More specifically, the squared envelope (SE) of the residual signal, removing deterministic components, is utilized to identify the gear wear distribution and its propagation trends, validated using the measured gear surface morphology. Moreover, a new CS2-based indicator is proposed to assess the severity of gear surface wear, achieving a high correlation with measured surface roughness: [math] is more than 0.9. The developed cyclostationarity-based framework can comprehensively evaluate the degradation status of the gear system caused by surface wear, significantly benefiting the health management of the gear transmission system, which is of great practical value for the health management of intelligent manufacturing systems. A series of endurance tests are conducted to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the developed framework for gear wear monitoring compared with the conventional indicators.

Abstract:Abstract This study was performed to measure the extent of wear of unlubricated spur gears on the involute tooth. Contacts that roll and slide normally undergo wear. When material removal occurs due to surface wear from the gear profile, the surface pressure in the gear profile is redistributed. A mathematical model for predicting wear and wear pattern in spur gear has been developed. The prediction is based on wear-rate equation, load shared by the tooth in single-pair contact zone and double-pair contact zone. The distribution of the contact pressure was determined using the Hertzian cylindrical contact theory. For determining the sliding distance of the gears, the two-point observation method (TPOM) was used. Sliding distance at pitch point of gear and pinion was zero, because theoretically at pitch point, both zero sliding and pure rolling occur. The pin on the wear test method was used to obtain the wear-rate on the material and simplified to the time of measurement on the gear wear. Taguchi's method for the design of the experiment was used, which significantly reduced experimental time with less experiment.

Abstract:Information about the worms' production technology of spiroid cylindrical gears is given. A method of the profile analytical calculation of a disk abrasive tool is proposed, providing the possibility to profile grinding wheels for various types of ruled helical surfaces: Archimedean, convolute, involute, etc. The use of the calculation methodology makes it possible to achieve high accuracy in processing the active (working) side surfaces of a hardened grinding worm; it sharply reduces the wear intensity of the spiroid wheel associated with it, the ring gear of which is made of bronze.

Abstract:Tooth root fatigue fracture is one of the most critical gear failure modes. This is due to the fact that it may cause a sudden interruption of the power flow within the gearbox, which typically results in the complete failure of the transmission. Therefore, a crucial design aspect is the accurate characterization of the gear bending fatigue strength. Here, designers can rely on experimental tests in order to obtain data related to their specific industrial reality. Within this context, pulsator test, also called Single Tooth Bending Fatigue (STBF) test, is the most adopted experimental methodology. As such tests are performed only on selected teeth within a testing device and not on all teeth of a running gear pair, the pulsator experimental outcome has to be elaborated before using it in the actual design phase. Depending on the elaboration methods, several SN curves can be obtained, and those curves will differ from the one predicted by the standards (e.g. ISO 6336 and ANSI AGMA 2001-D04). Furthermore, different SN curves will provide a different assessment when load spectra are considered. Here, the usage of data obtained from pulsator tests is analysed within the phase in which load spectra are considered while designing a gear. In particular, this article discusses the differences between various elaboration methodologies and an assessment based on standardized curves.

Abstract:Identification of changes occurring on the working surface of lubricated gears using analytical equipment, e.g., an FE-SEM scanning electron microscope with an EDS microanalyzer, a WLI interferometric microscope, or a GDEOS optical discharge spectrometer, enables the characterisation of wear mechanisms of this surface. Definition of the phenomena occurring on the surface of tribo-couples after scuffing tests enables a comparative analysis of scuffing resistance and surface properties of the micro- and nanostructure, and elemental composition of the tested gears. Recognition and analysis of the wear mechanisms occurring on the working surface of gears will reduce the risk of damage and losses resulting from the need for maintenance and repair. The study concerned the working surfaces of gears made of 17HNM and 35HGSA steels on which a W-DLC/CrN coating was deposited. Shell Omala S4 GX 320 commercial industrial oil with a synthetic PAO (polyalphaolefin) base was selected for the lubrication of the gears. Tribological tests employed an FZG gear scuffing under severe conditions test method and they were carried out on a T-12U test rig for cylindrical gear analysis.

Abstract:The scuffing load capacity of gear is closely related to the meshing temperature rise of tooth surface. The key to predict the temperature rise is to establish an accurate meshing temperature rise model. In the paper, a tribo‐dynamic model of helical gear is established through coupling of tooth surface lubrication parameters, and the influence of temperature rise on ambient temperature during meshing process is considered. Then, the effects of oil supply temperature, input speed and torque on tooth surface temperature rise, film thickness, friction excitation and gear dynamic characteristics are discussed. The results show that the temperature rise of the gear is higher during the engaging‐in and engaging‐out regions. Meanwhile, there is local high temperature at the end of the contact line due to the end effect. The vibration of gear along the off‐line‐of‐action direction is mainly determined by friction excitation. With the increase of oil supply temperature, input speed and torque, the risk of scuffing failure increases and the influence of oil supply temperature and input load is more significant. The conclusions of this paper may provide some valuable suggestions for the anti‐gluing failure design of gear in engineering.
