Abstract:Abstract We model a gyroscope that exploits quantum effects in an atomic Bose–Einstein condensate to gain a tunable enhancement in precision. Current inertial navigation systems rely on the Sagnac effect using unentangled photons in fibre-optic systems and there are proposals for improving how the precision scales with the number of particles by using entanglement. Here we exploit a different route based on sharp resonances associated with quantum phase transitions. By adjusting the interaction between the particles and/or the shape of their trapping potential we are able to tune the width of the resonance and hence the precision of the measurement. Here we show how we can use this method to increase the overall sensitivity of a gyroscope by adjusting the system parameters as the measurement proceeds and our knowledge of the rotation improves. We illustrate this with an example where the precision is enhanced by a factor of more than 20 over the case without tuning, after 100 repetitions. Metrology schemes with tunable precision based on quantum phase transitions could offer an important complementary method to other quantum-enhanced measurement and sensing schemes.

Abstract:The advent of increasingly precise gyroscopes has played a key role in the technological development of navigation systems. Ring-laser and fibre-optic gyroscopes, for example, are widely used in modern inertial guidance systems and rely on the interference of unentangled photons to measure mechanical rotation. The sensitivity of these devices scales with the number of particles used as $1/ \sqrt{N}$. Here we demonstrate how, by using sources of entangled particles, it is possible to do better and even achieve the ultimate limit allowed by quantum mechanics where the precision scales as 1/N. We propose a gyroscope scheme that uses ultra-cold atoms trapped in an optical ring potential.

Quantum enhanced mechanical rotation sensing using wavefront photonic gears

Abstract:Quantum metrology leverages quantum correlations for enhanced parameter estimation. Recently, structured light enabled increased resolution and sensitivity in quantum metrology systems. However, lossy and complex setups impacting photon flux, hinder true quantum advantage while using high dimensional structured light. We introduce a straightforward mechanical rotation quantum sensing mechanism, employing high-dimensional structured light and a compact high-flux (45,000 coincidence counts per second) N00N state source with N=2. The system utilizes two opposite spiral phase plates with topological charge of up to l=16 that convert mechanical rotation into wavefront phase shifts, and exhibit a 16-fold enhanced super-resolution and 25-fold enhanced sensitivity between different topological charges, while retaining the acquisition times and with negligible change in coincidence count. Furthermore, the high photon flux enables to detect mechanical angular acceleration in real-time. Our approach paves the way for highly sensitive quantum measurements, applicable to various interferometric schemes.

Abstract:We study the suppression of nonlinear interactions in resonant macroscopic quantum devices in the case of the solid-state ring laser gyroscope. These nonlinear interactions are tuned by vibrating the gain medium along the cavity axis. Beat note occurrence under rotation provides a precise measurement of the strength of nonlinear interactions, which turn out to vanish for some discrete values of the amplitude of vibration. Our theoretical description, in very good agreement with the measured data, suggests the use of a higher vibration frequency to achieve quasi-ideal rotation sensing over a broad range of rotation speeds. We finally underline the analogy between this device and some other macroscopic quantum rotation sensors, such as ring-shaped superfluid configurations, where nonlinear interactions could be tuned for example by the use of magnetically-induced Feschbach resonance.

Abstract:Recent progress shows that a surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) cavity can not only induce quantum acoustic dynamics, but can also form optomechanical-like systems. Its operating frequencies in the microwave band make it resistant to the thermal noise of surrounding environments, while its radiation-pressure couplings make it susceptible to weak forces. Based on these advantages, we propose a gyroscope comprising coupled microwave-SAW cavities. In this paper we systematically consider the range, signal-to-noise ratio, and sensitivity, which are the three most important indices to gyroscopes, but only partially considered in existing works. Additionally, we establish the fundamental limits of sensitivity when the quantum input is in the vacuum state and the squeezed vacuum state. We find that squeezing improves sensitivity and can surpass the standard quantum limit. However, this improvement can only reach up to 2/2 even as the squeezed parameter approaches infinity, which is rarely noted in recent works. Finally, we also offer analytical constraints for cooperativity and squeezed parameters. Abstract:High-precision gyroscopes are a key component of inertial navigation systems. By considering matter wave gyroscopes that make use of entanglement it should be possible to gain some advantages in terms of sensitivity, size, and resources used over unentangled optical systems. In this paper we consider the details of such a quantum-enhanced atom interferometry scheme based on atoms trapped in a carefully-chosen rotating trap. We consider all the steps: entanglement generation, phase imprinting, and read-out of the signal and show that quantum enhancement should be possible in principle. While the improvement in performance over equivalent unentangled schemes is small, our feasibility study opens the door to further developments and improvements.

Abstract:The most efficient approach to laser interferometric force sensing to date uses monochromatic carrier light with its signal sideband spectrum in a squeezed vacuum state. Quantum decoherence, i.e. mixing with an ordinary vacuum state due to optical losses, is the main sensitivity limit. In this work, we present both theoretical and experimental evidence that quantum decoherence in high-precision laser interferometric force sensors enhanced with optical cavities and squeezed light injection can be mitigated by a quantum squeeze operation inside the sensor's cavity. Our experiment shows an enhanced measurement sensitivity that is independent of the optical readout loss in a wide range. Our results pave the way for quantum improvements in scenarios where high decoherence previously precluded the use of squeezed light. Our results hold significant potential for advancing the field of quantum sensors and enabling new experimental approaches in high-precision measurement technology.

Abstract:Quantum sensors based on light-pulse atom interferometers allow for high-precision measurements of inertial and electromagnetic forces such as the accurate determination of fundamental constants as the fine structure constant or testing foundational laws of modern physics as the equivalence principle. These schemes unfold their full performance when large interrogation times and/or large momentum transfer can be implemented. In this article, we demonstrate how precision interferometry can benefit from the use of Bose-Einstein condensed sources when the state of the art is challenged. We contrast systematic and statistical effects induced by Bose-Einstein condensed sources with thermal sources in three exemplary science cases of Earth- and space-based sensors.

Abstract:Quantum information processing with geometric features of quantum states may provide promising noise-resilient schemes for quantum metrology. In this work, we theoretically explore phase-space geometric Sagnac interferometers with trapped atomic clocks for rotation sensing, which could be intrinsically robust to certain decoherence noises and reach high precision. With the wave guide provided by sweeping ring-traps, we give criteria under which the well-known Sagnac phase is a pure or unconventional geometric phase with respect to the phase space. Furthermore, corresponding schemes for geometric Sagnac interferometers with designed sweeping angular velocity and interrogation time are presented, and the experimental feasibility is also discussed. Such geometric Sagnac interferometers are capable of saturating the ultimate precision limit given by the quantum Cram\'er-Rao bound.

Abstract:Several optomechanics experiments are now entering the highly sought nonlinear regime where optomechanical interactions are large even for low light levels. Within this regime, new quantum phenomena and improved performance may be achieved, however, a corresponding theoretical formalism of cavity quantum optomechanics that captures the nonlinearities of both the radiation-pressure interaction and the cavity response is needed to unlock these capabilities. Here, we develop such a nonlinear cavity quantum optomechanical framework, which we then utilize to propose how position measurement can be performed beyond the breakdown of the linearized approximation. Our proposal utilizes optical general-dyne detection, ranging from single to dual homodyne, to obtain mechanical position information imprinted onto both the optical amplitude and phase quadratures and enables both pulsed and continuous modes of operation. These cavity optomechanical nonlinearities are now being confronted in a growing number of experiments, and our framework will allow a range of advances to be made in e.g. quantum metrology, explorations of the standard quantum limit, and quantum measurement and control.

Abstract:We propose an on-chip all-optical gyroscope based on nonlinear multi-resonant cavity quantum photonics in thin film $\chi^{(2)}$ resonators -- Quantum-Optic Nonlinear Gyro or QONG in short. The key feature of our gyroscope is co-arisal and co-accumulation of quantum correlations, nonlinear wave mixing and non-inertial signals, all inside the same sensor-resonator. We theoretically analyze the Fisher Information of our QONGs under fundamental quantum noise conditions. Using Bayesian optimization, we maximize the Fisher Information and show that $\sim 900\times$ improvement is possible over the shot-noise limited linear gyroscope with the same footprint, intrinsic quality factors and power budget.

Nanoradian-Scale Precision in Light Rotation Measurement via Indefinite Quantum Dynamics

Abstract:The manipulation and metrology of light beams are pivotal for optical science and applications. In particular, achieving ultra-high precision in the measurement of light beam rotations has been a long-standing challenge. Instead of utilizing quantum probes like entangled photons, we address this challenge by incorporating a quantum strategy called "indefinite time direction" into the parameterizing process of quantum parameter estimation. Leveraging this quantum property of the parameterizing dynamics allows us to maximize the utilization of OAM resources for measuring ultra-small angular rotations of beam profile. Notably, a nanoradian-scale precision of light rotation measurement is finally achieved in the experiment, which is the highest precision by far to our best knowledge. Furthermore, this scheme holds promise in various optical applications due to the diverse range of manipulable resources offered by photons.

Abstract:Using an atom-cavity platform, we propose to combine the effective gauge phase of rotated neutral atoms and the superradiant phase transition to build a highly sensitive and fast quantum rotation sensor. The atoms in a well-controlled array of Bose-Einstein condensates are coupled to a single light mode of an optical cavity. The photon emission from the cavity indicates changes in the rotation frequency in real time, which is crucial for inertial navigation. We derive an analytical expression for the phase boundaries and use a semi-classical method to map out the phase diagram numerically, which provides the dependence of the photon emission on the rotation. We further suggest to operate the sensor with a bias rotation, and to enlarge the enclosed area, to enhance the sensitivity of the sensor.

Abstract:We study the behavior of a quantum gyroscope, that is, a quantum system which singles out a direction in space in order to measure certain properties of incoming particles such as the orientation of their spins. We show that repeated Heisenberg interactions of the gyroscope with several incoming spin-1/2 particles provides a simple model of decoherence which exhibits both relaxation and dephasing. Focusing on the semiclassical limit, we derive equations of motion for the evolution of a coherent state and investigate the evolution of a superposition of such states. While a coherent state evolves on a timescale given by the classical ratio of the angular momentum of the gyroscope to that of the incoming particles, dephasing acts on a much shorter timescale that depends only on the angular difference of the states in the superposition.

Angular Bloch Oscillations and their applications

Abstract:To advance precise inertial navigation, we present a compact quantum sensor which is based on novel quantum phenomenon of the angular Bloch oscillations and measures solely the angular acceleration of slow external rotation. We investigate the dynamics of ultra-cold atoms confined in a toroidal trap with a ring-lattice along the azimuth angle, realized with the superposition of two copropagating Laguerre-Gaussian beams. In the presence of external rotation of small angular acceleration, or prescribed linear chirp between the two beams, the measured angular momentum of trapped atoms displays a specific periodic behaviour in time, which we name as the angular Bloch oscillations. This discovered quantum phenomenon is shown to be a key element of fruitful applications for (i) an efficient transfer of quantized angular momentum from light field to atoms by controlling the chirp, and (ii) the direct determination of the angular acceleration of external rotation by measuring the Bloch period.

Abstract:Quantum illumination has been proposed and demonstrated to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in light detection and ranging (LiDAR). When relying on coincidence detection alone, such a quantum LiDAR is limited by the timing jitter of the detector and suffers from jamming noise. Inspired by the Zou-Wang-Mandel experiment, we design, construct, and validate a quantum induced coherence (QuIC) LiDAR which is inherently immune to ambient and jamming noises. In traditional LiDAR the direct detection of the reflected probe photons suffers from deteriorating SNR for increasing background noise. In QuIC LiDAR we circumvent this obstacle by only detecting the entangled reference photons, whose single-photon interference fringes are used to obtain the distance of the object, while the reflected probe photons are used to erase path information of the reference photons. In consequence, the noise accompanying the reflected probe light has no effect on the detected signal. We demonstrate such noise resilience with both LED and laser light to mimic the background and jamming noise. Abstract:We present a model of a spin-squeezed rotation sensor utilizing the Sagnac effect in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring trap. The two input states for the interferometer are seeded using Raman pulses with Laguerre-Gauss beams and are amplified by the bosonic enhancement of spin-exchange collisions, resulting in spin-squeezing and potential quantum enhancement of the interferometry. The ring geometry has an advantage over separated beam path atomic rotation sensors due to the uniform condensate density. We model the interferometer both analytically and numerically for realistic experimental parameters and find that significant quantum enhancement is possible, but this enhancement is partially degraded when working in a regime with strong atomic interactions.

Abstract:We propose a quantum-enhanced lidar system to estimate a target's radial velocity, which employs squeezed and frequency-entangled signal and idler beams. We compare its performance against a classical protocol using a coherent state with the same pulse duration and energy, showing that quantum resources provide a precision enhancement in the estimation of the velocity of the object. We identify three distinct parameter regimes characterized by the amount of squeezing and frequency entanglement. In two of them, a quantum advantage exceeding the standard quantum limit is achieved assuming no photon losses. Additionally, we show that an optimal measurement to attain these results in the lossless case is frequency-resolved photon counting. Finally, we consider the effect of photon losses for the high-squeezing regime, which leads to a constant factor quantum advantage higher than 3 dB in the variance of the estimator, given a roundtrip lidar-to-target-to-lidar transmissivity larger than 50%.

Abstract:Quantum sensors allow the estimation of parameters with precision higher than that obtained with classical strategies. Devices based on quantum physics have allowed the precise estimation of the gravitational field, the detailed imaging of the brain, the detection of gravitational-wave sources more than 400 million light years away, and an ever-increasing precision in the measurement of time. Quantum metrology, which is the conceptual framework that encompasses all these devices, is reviewed here, emphasizing recent results regarding noisy systems.
