Abstract:The positioning task of the Internet of Things (IoT) for outdoor environments requires that the node devices meet the requirements of low power consumption, long endurance, and low cost and that the positioning system can achieve high-precision positioning and wide-area coverage. Considering that traditional IoT positioning technology cannot balance the cost, energy consumption, and positioning performance well, a Wide-Area Positioning System Based on Long Range Mesh (LoRaWAPS), which is a low-cost and low-power outdoor positioning system with multi-anchor wireless mesh networking and multi-dimensional data fusion, is designed in this paper. To meet the need for a positioning system, a low-power consumption and high-reliability LoRa Mesh protocol is proposed. Aiming at the problem that the accuracy of LoRa ranging is easily affected by the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) path propagation of signals, a distance estimation algorithm based on the fusion of time of flight (TOF) and received signal strength indicator (RSSI) multi-sampling data is proposed. Furthermore, a position estimation algorithm is designed to minimize the posteriori RSSI error for multi-anchor cooperative estimation scenarios. Furthermore, the prototype of LoRaWAPS is built and tested in the campus environment. The experimental results show that the proposed system can provide reliable location service with low power and low cost.
Long-term microclimate monitoring in wildland cultural heritage sites with wireless sensor networks

Abstract:Microclimates in many wildland cultural heritage sites are not under surveillance up to now, due to the lack of power supply and network access. However, real-time microclimate data in cultural heritage sites are very important for research and conservation. In this paper, we discuss the design of a wireless sensor system for long-term microclimate monitoring in wildland cultural heritage sites. Tiered and robust communication architecture including wireless sensor network (WSN), long-distance wireless polling network (LWPN) and internet was developed to realise stable monitoring in complex and harsh environment. Meanwhile, fault detection and diagnosis strategies have been designed to enable quick system restoration once a severe failure occurs. The currently deployed system consists of 241 data sensors covering 57 typical caves of the Mogao Grottoes. The stability and long lifetime of the system are verified through network and battery performance evaluations at the end of the paper.

Abstract:Internet of things (IoT) devices allow data to be communicated efficiently using low power to a central server to report location, movement, temperature and environmental attributes. With improvements in device connectivity distance, improved link margins, reductions in IoT hardware platform costs and the availability of higher-capacity batteries, non-powered temporary construction equipment (e.g. concrete barriers) can become smart and trackable. For this study, a long-range (LoRa) sensor platform is connected through an IoT low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) to test the feasibility of tracking construction equipment related to transportation. The signal strength relative to distance is analysed along with the radio-frequency signal attenuation of the signal strength through construction materials. The preliminary results show that a commercially available LoRa sensor with an omnidirectional antenna operating on an LPWAN can transmit up to 1310 m at grade. It is expected that these types of sensor platforms can be applied to other types of non-powered construction equipment to introduce smart functionalities. From the study, it was determined that it is feasible to deploy a LoRa-based sensor network to track non-powered temporary construction equipment. The study also demonstrated that a cost-effective poly(vinyl chloride) housing could be effective after 300 freeze–thaw cycles.

Abstract:Since transmission towers are generally located in areas with complex geological environments, such as mountains and rivers, relying only on conduct regular personnel inspections wastes considerable human and material resources. At present, the existing monitoring system has also the problems of data transmission, parameter accuracy and transmission distance. Based on this premise, a novel transmission tower tilt monistoring system was proposed in this paper. This research adopted the latest Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technology. Among tehm, LoRa (Long Range) is a modulation technology that provides a longer communication distance. NB-IoT (Narrow Band-Internet of Things) technology is an emerging technology in the IoT field that supports the cellular data connection of low-power devices in a wide area network. The proposed system through the data transmission of a LoRa multinode network, the tilt parameters of tower were uploaded to an online real-time monitoring system through NB-IoT. Each subnode included MPU6050 tilt sensors and a wireless communication LoRa module. The main node contained an NB-IoT module. It can upload the tilt information to the cloud platform. After uploading the data, administrators can arrange timely targeted maintenance for transmission towers with faults according to the analysis results. The proposed approach covers a wide range, has high service quality, and supports many connections.

Abstract:Construction industry faces with a relevant challenge to improve its productivity, and, in this context, new technologies can help overcome this gap. Nevertheless, it is still considered one of the least digitized sectors. Furthermore, citizen empowerment is becoming increasingly relevant in several areas such as energy, environment, agriculture, healthcare, and many others. Achieving these objectives is often a complex task since there are multiple obstacles and defiances such as high acquisition costs, technological barriers, or the lack of know-how transfer. Nevertheless, considering these barriers as opportunities, open-source alternatives are within reach of the society and with it the possibility to provide solutions to all kinds of projects and innovations. In this context, this research aims to develop a completely open-source framework for building monitoring, thus allowing access to real data and providing a decision-making support. During the research, several technologies have been employed, ranging from Arduino-based development boards for the implementation of wireless monitoring devices to single-board computers (SBC) such as Raspberry Pi as core of the deployed IoT LoRaWAN gateway or the Orange Pi for the server. In this last SBC, and in order to manage the gathered data, the integration of the software stack based on Node-RED, the time series database (TSDB) InfluxDB and Grafana as visualization dashboard was proposed. For the verification of the system reliability, it has been applied in a case study, and the results show its correct performance. Taking advantage of the data generated, these were integrated into the BIM model of the case study given the great importance of this methodology in the AEC sector. Finally, it is worth mentioning the proposed system becomes a completely open-source solution, thus offering a real and cost-affordable alternative for its scalability and mass deployment for building sector projects and many other scenarios.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) architecture is quickly becoming popular even outside of its originating scenario of home automation. This paper reports the design, implementation, and performance of an IoT hardware and software architecture conceived for the continuous monitoring of livestock located in barns and during grazing. We have adopted the LoRa low power wide area network (LPWAN) technology to cover the diverse environments, and a suitable configuration of web services to perform data storage, analysis, and visualization. Since the LoRa LPWAN (LoRaWAN) medium access control (MAC) layer does not provide a listen-before-talk (LBT) mechanism, we propose a custom MAC layer with LBT-based carrier-sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). The devised system has been implemented using off-the-shelf hardware, and its performance has also been estimated with the help of a C++ event-based simulator. The preliminary results of our HW implementation on the field confirm the stability of the conceived system and its reliability.

Abstract:Monitoring of civil infrastructures is critically needed to track aging, damages and ultimately to prevent severe failures which can endanger many lives. The ability to monitor in a continuous and fine-grained fashion the integrity of a wide variety of buildings, referred to as structural health monitoring, with low-cost, long-term and continuous measurements is essential from both an economic and a life-safety standpoint. To address these needs, we propose a low-cost wireless sensor node specifically designed to support modal analysis over extended periods of time with long-range connectivity at low power consumption. Our design uses very cost-effective MEMS accelerometers and exploits the Narrowband IoT protocol (NB-IoT) to establish long-distance connection with 4G infrastructure networks. Long-range wireless connectivity, cabling-free installation and multi-year lifetime are a unique combination of features, not available, to the best of our knowledge, in any commercial or research device. We discuss in detail the hardware architecture and power management of the node. Experimental tests demonstrate a lifetime of more than ten years with a 17000 mAh battery or completely energy-neutral operation with a small solar panel (60 mm $times$ 120 mm). Further, we validate measurement accuracy and confirm the feasibility of modal analysis with the MEMS sensors: compared with a high-precision instrument based on a piezoelectric transducer, our sensor node achieves a maximum difference of 0.08% at a small fraction of the cost and power consumption.

Abstract:This paper studies the feasibility of a real-time monitoring system to provide prompt analysis support of workers' behaviour on dam construction sites. The system makes use of wireless sensor tracking technology and a set of servers for the running of software, handling collected data, real-time site state visualization, and remote interaction communications. The low-level ZigBee-based tracking technology network hardware utilizing fingerprinting software technology was employed. The system was found to be able to cover a large field whilst retaining its simple and easily deployable features. The proposed system was successfully implemented on the Xiluodu arch dam construction site and ultimately helped overcome the original shortcomings in worker safety management and has advanced the means of administration and management's awareness and culture to new levels. The field tests also show that the received signal strength indicator (RSSI)-based localization algorithm implemented on ZigBee devices is reliable and is accurate enough at 3 to 5 meters. In conclusion, the system proved to be very useful for the management of field safety worker behaviour analyses in the case of such a high arch dam and also for similar hydraulic projects.

Abstract:With the rapid development of urbanization in China, the number and size of underground space development projects are increasing quickly. At the same time, more and more accidents are causing underground construction to increasingly become a focus of social attention. Therefore, this research presents a real-time safety early warning system to prevent accidents and improve safety management in underground construction, based on the “internet of things” (IoT) technology. The proposed system seamlessly integrates a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system and a RFID (radio frequency identification)-based labor tracking system. This system has been validated and verified through a real-world application at the cross passage construction site in the Yangtze Riverbed Metro Tunnel project in Wuhan, China. The system's application results show that it can effectively promote underground construction safety management efficiency, specifically in the real time detection, monitoring and early warning of safety risks.

Abstract:Collecting precise real-time information on urban drainage system performance is essential to identify, predict, and manage critical loading situations, such as urban flash floods and sewer overflows. Although emerging low-power wireless communication techniques allow efficient data transfers with great above-ground performance, for underground or indoor applications in a large coverage range are difficult to achieve due to physical and topological limitations, particularly in dense urban areas. In this paper, we first discuss the range limitations of the LoRaWAN standard based on a systematic evaluation of a long-term operation of a sensor network monitoring in-sewer process dynamics. Analyses reveal an–on average–five-fold higher data packet loss for sub-surface nodes, which steadily grows with increasing distance to the gateway. Second, we present a novel LPWAN concept based on the LoRaⓇ technology that enhances transmission reliability, efficiency, and flexibility in range-critical situations through meshed multi-hop routing and ensures a precise time-synchronization through optional GPS or DCF77 long-wave time signaling. Third, we illustrate the usefulness of the newly developed concept by evaluating the radio transmission performance for two independent full-scale field tests. Test results show that the synchronous LoRa mesh network approach clearly outperforms the standard LoRaWAN technique with regard to the reliability of packet delivery when transmitting from range-critical locations. Hence, the approach is expected to generally ease data collection from difficult-to-access locations such as underground areas.

Abstract:Underground mines are considered one of the riskiest facilities for human activities due to numerous accidents and geotechnical failures recorded worldwide over the last century, which have resulted in unsafe labor conditions, poor health outcomes, injuries, and fatalities. One significant cause of these accidents is the inadequate or nonexistent capacity for the real-time monitoring of safety conditions in underground mines. In this context, new emerging technologies linked to the Industry 4.0 paradigm, such as sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), and LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) wireless connectivity, are being implemented for planning the efficient, safe, and sustainable performance of underground mine labor environments. This paper studies the implementation of an ecosystem composed of IoT sensors and LoRa wireless connectivity in a data-acquisition system, which eliminates the need for expensive cabling and manual monitoring in mining operations. Laying cables in an underground mine necessitates cable support and protection against issues, such as machinery operations, vehicle movements, mine operator activities, and groundwater intrusion. As the underground mine expands, additional sensors typically require costly cable installations unless wireless connectivity is employed. The results of this review indicate that an IoT LoRaWAN-based wireless sensor network (WSN) provides real-time data under complex conditions, effectively transmitting data through physical barriers. This network presents an attractive low-cost solution with reliable, simple, scalable, secure, and competitive characteristics compared to cable installations and manually collected readings, which are more sporadic and prone to human error. Reliable data on the behavior of the underground mine enhances productivity by improving key performance indicators (KPIs), minimizing accident risks, and promoting sustainable environmental conditions for mine operators. Finally, the adoption of IoT sensors and LoRaWAN wireless connectivity technologies provides information of the underground mine in real-time, which supports better decisions by the mining industry managers, by ensuring compliance with safety regulations, improving the productive performance, and fostering a roadmap towards more environmentally friendly labor conditions.

Abstract:Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug released in the United States in 1993 for use as adjunctive therapy in refractory partial epilepsy. The mechanism of action of gabapentin is unknown, but the drug has very favorable pharmacokinetics and a good safety profile, which allows its use in high-risk patients. Several reports have described the successful use of gabapentin for bipolar disorders in adults, but there are no controlled studies in the use of gabapentin in children and adolescents. We describe a 12-year-old boy with a history of attention deficient hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), reading disorder, mixed receptive and expressive language disorder, encopresis, and bipolar disorder II who was treated with gabapentin 200 mg/day added to methylphenidate 30 mg/day. Within 3 weeks the improvement and stabilization of mood symptoms was remarkable, as noted by mother, teacher, and clinician, and remained so for 6 months of follow-up. Comorbid bipolar disorder and ADHD is a hotly debated topic in the child and adolescent psychiatric literature, with rates of comorbid ADHD and bipolar disorder ranging from 22% to 90%. Controlled studies are needed to evaluate the possible antimanic mood stabilizing and/or antidepressant properties or gabapentin in youths.
Monitoring workers on indoor construction sites using data fusion of real-time worker's location, body orientation, and productivity state

Abstract:Systematic control of construction operations using a Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) is becoming common in providing support to the management of complex construction sites. This paper proposes a novel indoor construction site monitoring system to track workers' location, workspace, body orientation, and productivity state at the same time. The system works based on three modules: (I) workspace discovery; (ii) body orientation detection; and (iii) productivity state identification. The workspace discovery module integrates location data with the 4-Dimensional Building Information Model (BIM) of the job site. Then, the body orientation detection module identifies workers' field of view onsite using Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) values between Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons. Last but not least, the productivity state identification module relies on an accelerometer sensor embedded in body-mounted beacons. The results of performed experiments in the laboratory show a mean error of less than 30° in detecting the worker's focus orientation for a period of eight minutes. For identifying direct work and support work states, the productivity state identification module yielded an average error of 14% and a maximum error of 20%.

Abstract:Maintenance strategies based on structural health monitoring can provide effective support in the optimization of scheduled repair of existing structures, thus enabling their lifetime to be extended. With specific regard to reinforced concrete (RC) structures, the state of the art seems to still be lacking an efficient and cost-effective technique capable of monitoring material properties continuously over the lifetime of a structure. Current solutions can typically only measure the required mechanical variables in an indirect, but economic, manner, or directly, but expensively. Moreover, most of the proposed solutions can only be implemented by means of manual activation, making the monitoring very inefficient and then poorly supported. This paper proposes a structural health monitoring system based on a wireless sensor network (WSN) that enables the automatic monitoring of a complete structure. The network includes wireless distributed sensors embedded in the structure itself, and follows the monitoring-based maintenance (MBM) approach, with its ABCDE paradigm, namely: accuracy, benefit, compactness, durability, and easiness of operations. The system is structured in a node level and has a network architecture that enables all the node data to converge in a central unit. Human control is completely unnecessary until the periodic evaluation of the collected data. Several tests are conducted in order to characterize the system from a metrological point of view and assess its performance and effectiveness in real RC conditions.
UAV-Aided Emergency Environmental Monitoring in Infrastructure-Less Areas: LoRa Mesh Networking Approach

Abstract:Rapid acquisition of environmental parameters of emergency sites is crucial for emergency response. However, in areas where public ground networks do not provide sufficient coverage or are destroyed by disasters, the rapid backhaul of monitoring data from emergency sites is difficult. Due to the urgent demand for data collection in such areas, we propose an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided emergency environmental monitoring system using a LoRa mesh networking approach, which can quickly build a large range of wireless communication networks suitable for small data transmission. First, we designed a LoRa-based mesh network protocol by using a custom slotted ALOHA medium access mechanism. Second, we designed and implemented a custom software and hardware platform of the monitoring system. The system adopts a communication mode, including multiple sensor nodes (SNs), multiple relay nodes (RNs), a gateway (GW), and a network server. Finally, we demonstrated the performance of the protocol and the system by in-lab and outdoor tests. The results show that when data rate is 0.293 kb/s, the line-of-sight 1-hop transmission distance is more than 10 km, and the 1-hop transmission delay is less than 6 s; the end-to-end delay has an upper bound, which can meet the real-time requirement of emergency response; the least upper bound of throughput per slot of our mesh protocol is much higher than that of LoRaWAN. Evaluation results also demonstrate the network robustness to environmental changes.

Abstract:The narrowband Internet-of-Things (NB-IoT) communication standard is gaining momentum within the big picture of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) owing to its capabilities of ensuring pervasive and wide coverage while limiting power consumption. Therefore, it turns out to be a valuable enabling technology within a considerable number of applications. Apart from traditional remote monitoring and data acquisition purposes where comparable Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) facilities have ruled for years, NB-IoT can potentially carve out space within specific alcoves in which low latency, low power, high data-rates and ubiquitous coverage are fundamentals requirements. Long term asset tracking definitely falls within such niches, and in particular NB-IoT can become a valuable alternative to be exploited by both replacing the conventional Global Position System (GPS) system, or supporting it. To this end, this paper proposes an innovative tracking system prototype for asset shipping which relies on two enabling technologies: GPS and NB-IoT. While position transmission is always put into effect via NB-IoT, it can be fetched by resorting to both GPS (like a standard tracker) or NB-IoT (thus establishing a GPS-less method). As a result, two localization techniques are arranged: the former one is preciser but energy hungrier, while the latter one is coarser but more low power. Such working principles were successfully tested on the field by means of two road tests in as much itineraries. Tests results are in agreement with the expectations underlying the two working principles since the finer one provides a more accurate tracking. In addition, a consumption analysis was also performed aiming at assessing the prototype lifetime. Finally, tests pursuing the assessment of the tracking error were carried out underling the fact that it strongly depends on the geographic deployment of NB-IoT towers.

Abstract:The objective of this work was to develop an innovative LoRa-based platform that provides a low-cost and customizable solution for real-time monitoring of soil parameters. The system architecture was based on four levels: environmental (rural), sensors and actuators, communication network, and application, with the code made available for operation. The collected data were transmitted to data collection points using LoRa technology. The application level allowed for data storage, analysis, and visualization, enabling end-users to remotely monitor and control environmental measurement operations. With LoRa technology range tests, results indicated the capability to cover a maximum area between 95 and 120 hectares in the studied areas. Additionally, the collected data were sent to ThingSpeak.com and a mobile application called Thingsview. This demonstrated the efficiency and viability of LoRa technology for industrial communication sensor and IoT applications in rural environments, offering automation, increased efficiency, and savings in human resources for environmental monitoring tasks.

Abstract:Multi-Intelligent control system (MICS) development and its application handling become crucial day by day. With the emerging technology of Internet of Things (IoT), smart agriculture system has become a new trend in the agriculture field. Our proposed work uses multi-sensing applications, use of Internet of Things (IoT), smart communication, power optimization, water management, and smart security compatible with expected solutions of real time challenges in the irrigation sector and helps to make it much more productive and efficient. Introduction of LoRa Technology can be considered as a revolution in the field of IoT. LoRa Technology in the field of IoT can perform very-long range transmission with low power battery consumption. Furthermore, we are proposing a Generic MICS architecture to integrate LoRa capability in IoT-based applications for enhanced performance. Our proposed work has described IoT as a tool to integrate with the series of multifunctional sensors, microcontrollers, output devices, and data relay using LoRa mesh networking within the system. LoRa mesh networking is found with the best performance for long-range communication and able to achieve good Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) up to 92% as compared to star network topology which is limited to 58.7% of PDR. The wireless architecture of the network layer is being designed in a way to detect the leakage of water, soil, security, and reservoir water level through the sensors interfaced with it. The proposed system has other features like cost proficiency, power optimization, reliable wireless networking, remote data accessing, and capability to reduce water wastage.
LoRa Multi-Hop Networks for Monitoring Underground Mining Environments

Abstract:Internet of Things applications have gained widespread recognition for their efficacy in typical scenarios, such as smart cities and smart healthcare. Nonetheless, there exist numerous unconventional situations where IoT technologies have not yet been massively applied, though they can be extremely useful. One of such domains is the underground mining sector, where enhancing automation monitoring through wireless communications is of essential significance. In this paper, we focus on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a LoRa-based multi-hop network tailored specifically for monitoring underground mining environments, where data traffic is sporadic, but energy efficiency is of paramount importance. We hence define a synchronization framework that makes it possible for the nodes to sleep for most of the time, waking up only when they need to exchange traffic. Notably, our network achieves a sub 40us proven synchronization accuracy between parent-child pairs with minimum overhead for diverse topologies, rendering it highly viable for subterranean operations. Furthermore, for proper network dimensioning, we model the interplay between network's throughput, frame size, and sampling periods of potential applications. Moreover, we propose a model to estimate devices' duty cycle based on their position within the multi-hop network, along with empirical observations for its validation. The proposed models make it possible to optimize the network's performance to meet the specific demands that can arise from the different subterranean use cases, in which robustness, low power operation, and compliance with radio-frequency regulations are key requirements that must be met.

Abstract:With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT), Long-range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN), and high-speed internet, the potential to use such technologies for monitoring remote areas with limited cellular coverage is becoming increasingly important. However, existing remote monitoring solutions rely on cellular networks, which often do not exist or are unreliable in remote communities such as oil & gas and mining sites, livestock farms, and some specialized care clinics for monitoring individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Furthermore, existing LoRa-based systems that are geolocation aware used star network topology, which has been proven to be not scalable to cover remote communities due to maintaining a massive volume of routing tables. This paper introduces a LoRaWAN-based geofencing system designed to address the unique challenges faced by these communities, especially areas with limited cellular coverage. The proposed system uses an optimized version of the Echo protocol to enhance the system's reliability, which runs over a mesh network topology that provides a scalable solution for monitoring remote areas. In particular, we developed a geolocation and geofencing alert system tailored to overcome the limitations of cellular coverage in remote areas. Our system utilized LoRaWAN hardware supported by an optimized Echo protocol in a zero-control mesh network to efficiently detect boundary breaches of the monitored subjects such as cattle, patients with Alzheimer's disease, robots mounted with IoT devices and sensors, etc. Experimental results showed that our system outperformed cellular-based systems regarding energy efficiency and scalability.
