Abstract:Studies on students' perceptions and expectations during physical education (PE) online learning remain scarce. Centered on self-determination theory, the present cross-sectional study aims to identify gender differences and predictors affecting motivation, psychological needs satisfaction (PNS), and academic achievement during PE online learning. Data were collected from Saudi students' (N = 308, 161 females and 147 males) responses to the PE autonomy, relatedness, competence, and motivation questionnaires. Welch's t-test for unequal sample sizes, multiple linear regression, and binary logistic regression were used to compare means and to predict the relationships between the independent and dependent variables. The results showed higher autonomy and competence perceptions in female than in male students, but no differences were observed in relatedness. Female students presented higher intrinsic motivations, lower amotivation perceptions than males. However, no gender differences were recorded in extrinsic motivation. Students with less experience in online learning and weak grade point averages (GPAs) are more susceptible to having a high level of amotivation. Gender, GPA, and prior experience with online learning are the common predictors for all PNS and amotivation, while GPA and prior experience with online learning are the determinants of intrinsic motivation. GPA is affected by prior experience with online learning, autonomy, competence, intrinsic motivation, and amotivation. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to adapt their didactic-pedagogical behaviors during PE online learning according to students' motivation and autonomy perceptions. Structuring teaching activities with more individualized support for autonomy, competence, intrinsic motivation, and students' online skills/competencies ensures better learning efficiency and academic achievements.

Abstract:Background During early 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdown, most education systems—including universities—shifted from face-to-face classes to online learning. In Saudi Arabia, this might have contributed to a decreased level of physical activity (PA) and a concurrent increase in sedentary behaviour among young adults. This study aimed to investigate the impact of online learning on PA during the COVID-19 lockdown period among female undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia. Methods Data were collected through an online survey administered to participants. It consisted of three sections including demographic information, participants' perception towards online learning and PA, and PA level using the self-reported active-questionnaire survey tool. The association between online learning and PA was measured using linear regression. The statistical significance was set at P 30 hours/week had lower PA (r = − 363.24; 95% confidence interval (CI) −593.97, −132.50), followed by those attending 25–30 hours/week (r = − 277.66; 95% CI −484.65, −70.66). Conclusion Online learning has negatively affected the PA level of female undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia during the COVID-19 lockdown period, in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, this might affect their phycological status. Nevertheless, future studies are warranted to further investigate the relationship between PA level and psychological status.
Challenges and future prospects of online practical education in physical education faculties during the COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract:Introduction. Coronavirus (COVID-19) is considered a worldwide pandemic, and as such a threat, it caused millions of cases and above million deaths. Aim. The present research aims to explore the challenges among the lecturers and students during the online practical education in the faculties of physical education (PE) during the COVID-19 world pandemic, and to seek the best solutions and applications that can be used under similar circumstances from the perspective of lecturers and students. Methodology and research methods. The authors used the descriptive approach on a sample of lecturers ( n = 63) and students ( n = 1391). To reduce face-to-face interaction, the researchers designed the study tool using a web tool, where the study included two questionnaires. The first dealt with the lecturers’ challenges during the online practical education and the best solutions and practices from their perception. In addition, the second dealt with the students’ challenges during the online practical education and the best solutions and techniques from the students’ points of view. We used frequencies, percentages, Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, mean, standard deviations, three-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test to address the study sample responses. Results. The findings show that the educational environment is one of the main challenges facing the lecturers during the online practical education while considering the aspects of students’ social and economic factors is one of the essential solutions. In addition, there are statistically significant differences in the level of challenges according to the gender variable. From the students’ points of view, the content and the educational environment are among the most significant challenges they face during online practical education. Scientific novelty. The study attempted to uncover the challenges facing students in physical education faculties in practical subjects. As far as the researchers know, it is considered one of the few studies that addressed the impact of the transition to distance education due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, this study constitutes a turning point that can be used in future studies. Practical significance. The practical significance of this study lies in the use of its results in strategic planning for distance education in similar situations, thus contributing to achieving better learning outcomes by addressing weaknesses and encouraging positive aspects.

Abstract:Increasing evidence suggests that physical activity (PA) can reduce depression and anxiety in adolescents. At the same time, quality of life (QoL) is sensitive to both mental health and PA, but little is known about the mechanism between these three variables among adolescents. This study aimed to assess the physical activity, mental health, and quality of life of school students when they returned to school after two years of distance learning in the Jazan region. This current investigation represented an observational cross-sectional survey conducted in January 2022 among a random sample of 601 students from intermediate and high schools in the Jazan region, Saudi Arabia. Three standardized questionnaires were used for data collection; the Arabic version of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL), Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS21), and the Fels PAQ for children. The analysis revealed a moderate level of physical activity, decreased HRQoL, and symptoms of mental health problems (anxiety, depression, and stress) among the schools' students when they returned to school following COVID-19 lockdown. The overall Pediatric Quality of Life mean score was (81.4 ± 16.4), which differed significantly according to gender, age groups, and grade levels (p < 0.05 for all). There was a negative correlation between the overall quality of life and mental health domains. Sport was negatively correlated with mental illness symptoms and positively correlated (p < 0.05) with Pediatric Quality of Life. The regression models revealed that stress was a significant predictor for the quality of life of male and female adolescents ([β = −0.30, (95% CI (−0.59) to (−0.02), p < 0.05)] and [β = −0.40, (95% CI (−0.70) to (−0.01), p < 0.05)], respectively). The analysis revealed a moderate level of physical activity among the schools' students when they returned to school following COVID-19 lockdown. Children's involvement in physical activity was associated with improved quality of life and mental health. The results call for the need to develop appropriate intervention programs to increase school students' physical activity levels.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to identify the viewpoint of students taking minor PE in an online class setting, and to examine these viewpoints with respect to gender, family’s accommodation, monthly income of the family, gadgets used in online class and source of internet connection. Sample of the study are students from the three institutes of the college. In order to gather data, a survey questionnaire is applied to all 263 students. Frequency, percentage, t-test, and ANOVA were used to analyze the data depending on the qualities of the variables. The results found out that most of the students highly appreciates the application of online class setting in the midst of pandemic, in order for them to benefit from distance education they should know about the hardware and software of a computer, and the proper use of internet. Based on this result, courses that deals with computer literacy and internet usage in these institutes can be suggested. Most of the students has positive outlook in the application of distance education. However, there are still negative ideas and experiences such as motivational problems, conflict with the parents and reduces attention. They also experience difficulty with communication to their instructors. Based on these results, it is highly suggested that the guidance counselors and instructors should work together in order to address these problems students are currently facing in distance online education.
Medical Students' Perceptions Towards Online Teaching During the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Cross-Sectional Study from Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: The Covid-19 has made a huge impact on higher education. Online teaching and learning became essential to deliver educational activities in all areas including medical education. In this study, we aimed to investigate medical students' perceptions on the role of online teaching and learning in facilitating medical education. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study using a self-administered online questionnaire was conducted. Students eligible were medical students across all years at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, Saudi Arabia. Perceptions analysis was conducted using SPSS software. Results: A total of 563 students participated in the study (prominent category female 64%, n = 361). There was a significant increase in the number of hours devoted to online learning during the pandemic. Live lectures/tutorials platform via zoom showed the highest rate of interaction compared to pre-recorded lectures and learning materials uploaded on blackboard. 50% of the students disagreed that online teaching is as effective as face-to-face teaching. The greatest perceived enjoyable aspect included the online accessibility of materials. Whereas the most frequent perceived barrier to online learning included internet connection. 17% of students reflected a poor understanding of scientific materials through online PBL. More than 50% of students revealed that online theoretical lectures are as good as classroom or better. Whereas the majority (70%) were unable to learn clinical skills online. The results indicated high impact on students' physical activities (80%). Impacts were higher on pre-clinical students' health and social life than on clinical students. Conclusion: Our findings reported that during emergency situations due to the pandemic, online teaching enables the continuity of medical education and provides adequate efficiency. The use of live online platforms showed high level of interaction. However, some barriers need to be addressed especially at the clinical skills development level to maximize the benefit of online teaching and learning.

Abstract:Background: COVID-19 pandemic shocked the world; it changes everybody's life, especially in education and online learning becomes a new culture. Aim of the study: To assess effect of online learning on psychological wellbeing, academic resilience, and self-efficacy among college students. Subjects and Methods: Research design: A descriptive design was employed. Setting: The study was conducted at faculty of nursing Benha University, Egypt. Subjects: A convenience sample of 400 students from the Faculty of Nursing at Benha University, Qalyubia Governorate. Tool of data collection: Tool (1) Personal data about the students. Tool (II) Psychological Well-being Scale. Tool (III) Academic Resilience Scale. Tool (IV). Online Learning Self-Efficacy Scale. Results: The findings revealed a negative impact of online learning on all three variables: Less than two-thirds of the students reported low levels of psychological well-being, suggesting potential detrimental effects on their mental and emotional health. Similar proportions of students exhibited low level of academic resilience and poor level of online learning self-efficacy, indicating decreased capacity to navigate academic difficulties with decrease student`s confidence in their ability to succeed in the online environment. Conclusion: Statistically significant strong correlations were observed on psychological wellbeing, academic resilience, and self-efficacy among college students. This suggests that lower academic resilience and online self-efficacy are associated with decreased psychological well-being. Recommendations: Develop and implement psycho-educational modules that enhance students' self-efficacy in online learning environments and Equip students with effective stress management skills and foster academic resilience to navigate challenges associated with online learning.
The Impact of the COVID-19 Lockdown on Physical Therapy Undergraduates and Their Families. A Qualitative Study from the United Arab Emirates

Abstract:Background: The COVID-19 pandemic closed most establishments in the United Arab Emirates except health care and other essential services from 8 March 2020 until 24 June. By 22 March, most citizens were working online, including physical therapy students, and a no-movement policy restricted exercise to homes. The lockdown ended partially in August 2021 and almost complete by January 2022. Objective: We aimed (1) to explore the physical activities of advanced undergraduate physical therapy students and their families during the lockdown, (2) to discuss how participants helped promote and maintain their own and their family's physical health, and (3) to identify what knowledge and skills gained in their physical therapy study students utilized during the lockdown. Methods: We took a qualitative approach; a one-to-one semi-structured interviews were conducted by Year 4 physical students who at the time were registered for a module covering qualitative research methods. The students interviewed other physical therapy students from year 4 and 5 who were recruited using convenience sampling from a health sciences educational institution. Interviews were conducted and recorded on the Zoom platform and transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the data. Findings: Forty-six students agreed to participate, and data saturation was achieved with interviews of 24 students. During the COVID-19 Stay Home-Stay Safe initiative, students of physical therapy were found to be physically active and to have designed home exercise programs for themselves and their families. Adherence to regular exercise was high among the students but low among family members. Three overarching themes, each with three subthemes, emerged through synthesis, coding, and categorizing. Conclusion: Undergraduate students can effectively promote their own and their family's health. Energy imbalance and increasing neck, shoulder, and back pain among youth and lack of exercise among adults, midlife, and older, raise health concerns.

Issues in Comprehensive Pediatric Nursing

Abstract:Parenting a child with, or at risk for, a developmental delay or disability can be stressful. Abidin's parenting stress model was used as a framework to examine how several maternal, child, and family factors predict parent stress outcomes. Stepwise regression models revealed that maternal and child factors were significant contributors to parenting stress. However, family factors (income and family functioning) were not retained. Parenting stress was lower when child (cognitive and adaptive ability) and maternal (depression and child care competence) characteristics were more positive. Child cognitive ability was a strong contributor to total parenting stress and two parenting stress subscales. Findings suggest that these parents need stress lowering interventions such as supportive child care, respite relief, and a child behaviour-focused program.

Abstract:Our objective is to assess motivation and self-regulated learning domains among undergraduate health professional students during compulsory E-learning in the COVID-19 pandemic, and explore inter-gender variabilities and the correlation between test anxiety and self-regulated learning. Institutional based descriptive study, Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) was administered to 291 healthy undergraduate students of health professions programs at Al Marefa University. Two months after shifting to compulsory E-learning, students were invited to return an online standardized self- administered questionnaire via Google form. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 23. Reliability analysis with an average close to or exceeds the recommended value (α = 0.7). The extrinsic motivation was higher than the intrinsic one, the use of learning strategies was modest. Female students displayed significantly higher motivation and learning strategies scores (P=0.001). Male had higher extrinsic goal orientation P= 0.001, self-efficacy P= 0.043, Help-seeking P= 0.017, while females had a higher time study environment P=0.027. Also, the youngest and oldest students were the most motivated ones (P= 0.04). A positive correlation exists between test anxiety and extrinsic goal orientation (P=0.000). Statistically significant correlations exist between test anxiety and all of the learning strategies scales. There are adequate levels of motivation with moderate use of learning strategies among health professional students during sudden shifting to compulsory E-learning in the COVID-19 pandemic. Females’ students were more self-regulated learners than males. Further investigation of the use of the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire and its association with academic achievement is recommended to assess the online teaching experience.

Abstract:Background: Online learning or E-learning are approaches to broadcasting teaching by the means of internet technology and software applications. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is likewise embarking on the rapid growth in online education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the student’s perceptions regarding online teaching and learning during COVID 19. Methods: An online computer-based cross-sectional study was conducted between May and June 2020. A pre-validated questionnaire was used and administrated to health sciences students studying at Dammam Universities through online software QuestionPro. Results: Out of total 281, 68% of the participants were females (n=188) while 31.9% (n=88) were male students with an average age of 23.1(4.5) years. Overall, 176 (62%) of the students expressed their satisfaction with online learning. Conclusion: Findings will help academicians to identify strengths, areas of improvement, and encourage faculty to think deeply to restructure course learning objectives, teaching techniques to engage students and improve learning process.
Pharmacy Students' Attitudes Toward Distance Learning After the COVID-19 Pandemic: Cross-Sectional Study From Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Background: Electronic learning refers to the use of assistive tools in offline and distance learning environments. It allows students to access learning tools and materials anytime and anywhere. However, distance learning courses depend on several factors that affect the quality of learning, which consequently affect students' preferences in the settings and tools used to deliver educational materials. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate students' preferences for continuing distance learning after the pandemic and to assess the distance educational environment after the pandemic. It also aimed to identify the factors affecting distance learning and evaluate students' preferences regarding modes of communication with instructors. Methods: A web-based survey was used to conduct this cross-sectional study. The target participants of this study were students in the doctor of pharmacy program at Unaizah College of Pharmacy, Qassim, Saudi Arabia. All students enrolled from December 2022 to January 2023 received an invitation with a link to the web-based survey. Results: The survey was completed by 141 students (58 female students and 83 male students). The research results showed that most students (102/141, 72.3%) did not wish to continue distance education for laboratory courses, and 60.3% (85/141) did not wish to continue taking distance team-based learning after the pandemic. Additionally, 83.7% (118/141) of the students indicated that distance courses were simple. More than half of the participants (79/141, 56%) stated that having a camera on during class negatively impacted their learning, and only 29.1% (41/141) of the students stated that nonvisual communication with their fellow students impacted their learning. A large proportion of students (83/141, 58.9%) reported impairment of social engagement on campus, 44% (62/141) in-person interactions during classes, and 73.7% (104/141) were relieved that their classes were not disrupted. Conclusions: Similar to all types of education, distance learning is characterized by advantages and disadvantages, as reported by students. Students felt that the course material was intelligible, and the distance course was uncomplicated. Moreover, they expressed relief that their studies were not disrupted. However, they also reported the loss of face-to-face contact during courses as the most significant drawback of distance learning versus face-to-face learning, followed by a lack of social connection on campus.

Abstract:Purpose This study investigated the factors affecting online learning (OL) and stress and anxiety (SaA) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia. Design/methodology/approach This study used a quantitative study and a survey questionnaire to collect the cross-sectional data. The authors sent 500 survey questionnaires to the respondents of which 262 samples were returned. This represented a 52% response rate. Finally, this study used 260 valid samples to derive this study’s findings. Findings Through structure equation modelling analysis, this study’s findings demonstrate that lack of time and support, technical problems and lack of technical skills negatively affect OL. In addition, this study’s findings show that cost and access to internet has a significant effect on OL. Finally, this study’s findings show that among Saudi Arabian university students OL is the significant predictor of SaA. Practical implications This study’s findings offer university authorities meaningful ways to identify replacements for the usage of harmful devices to lessen psychological problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. By pointing out students’ significant challenges and barriers during OL, this study’s findings support the smooth and parallel running of OL. Such challenges cause deprivation and frustration among the students. Therefore, to some extent, it may be a violation of their human rights. In this way, this study’s findings demonstrate how to overcome these violations. Originality/value By exploring the significant challenges faced by Saudi Arabian university students, this study’s findings offer an original and empirical contribution to the literature.
Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on sleep quality among medical and general science students: King Saud University Experience

Abstract:Objectives: Sleep is a vital component for overall health and well-being, and it plays an essential role in social, physical, psychological, and cognitive health. This study aimed to appraise the sleep quality in medical and science students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This questionnaire-based cross sectional study was conducted in the Department of Physiology, College of Medicine, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during September-December 2020. In this study, a validated self-administered electronic questionnaire was distributed to 1000 students, 782 (78.2%) of whom completed the study. The selection of students was based on using the stratified random sampling. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) instrument scale was used to assess the sleep quality among medical and general sciences students. Results: Out of 782 respondents, 410 (52.4%) were medical students, and 372 (47.6%) were science students, including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Botany, and Zoology. Among the medical students, 143 (34.9%) were in pre-clinical years (1st and 2nd), while 266 (64.9%) of them were in clinical years (3rd, 4th, and 5th). Among all medical and general sciences students, it was found that 669 (85.5%) had poor sleep quality with a mean PSQI global score (mean 8.356) among them 336 (50.2%) were medical, and 333 (49.8%) were science students. Science students’ sleep quality was poorer (mean 8.78) than their medical counterparts (mean= 7.93). Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has a significant negative impact on students’ mental health and sleep quality. Both medical and general science students showed alarming levels of sleep deprivation and concerning low sleep quality during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sleep deprivation among students may be due to the sudden change of pedagogy in education driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. Abstract:This exploratory study explores an array of student perceptions regarding their online learning experience. In the present circumstances where the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all fields of life, most educational institutions have resorted to online instruction and virtual meetings. The present study explored the variables contributing to student satisfaction with online teaching and learning effectiveness. Data were collected through an online survey. Python with Scikit-Learn was used for data analysis to implement regression functions and classify the data. The results of the study defined effective online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. In combination, eight criteria contributed to the definition: motivating students to accomplish, communicating effectively, meeting students' needs, providing access to a wide range of content, providing a well-organized course structure, providing numerous sources, providing explanatory feedback, and facilitating meaningful discussions. The results of the study are beneficial to understand what kind of factors contribute to student satisfaction concerning online transition during the COVID-19 pandemic. They will also help them develop a future support plan to help youth cope with virtual classes and online instruction.

Abstract:Background During the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, Saudi Arabia implemented strict measures to prevent the entry and spread of the virus and to minimize its burden on society, including the use of online education as an alternative to traditional classroom learning. This study surveyed medical students from King Abdulaziz bin Saud University for Health Sciences-Riyadh to evaluate the factors affecting their satisfaction and experience with online learning. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted from March to May 2021, using consecutive sampling and a population of approximately 700 medical students from King Saud bin Abdulaziz University of Health Sciences. This study was carried out through an online questionnaire. Results The survey received 277 responses with a response rate of 40%. About 15.3% of respondents believed that online learning productivity was poor, and 18.9% found it below average; however, 21.7% rated it as excellent. The level of anxiety while studying at home was rated as fine by 32.7%, while 21% felt very anxious, and the level of distraction was reported to be high, by 23.1%. Additionally, 64.4% of respondents preferred more online courses even after the COVID-19 crisis. Overall, 29.2% of respondents rated online learning as excellent, while 12.5% rated it as poor. We found a significant positive correlation between feeling isolated while studying at home and feeling anxious (r=0.618; p<0.001) and a significant positive correlation between productivity during online learning and the impact on grades (r=0.495; p<0.001). Conclusion This study found that online learning had benefits but also negatively impacted academic performance and mental health, highlighting the need for tailored support services. Further research is recommended, and medical students should have more theoretical online classes while keeping practical sessions on-site.

Abstract:The spread of COVID-19 has led students to take classes online (rather than face-to-face) worldwide, including in China. For this study, we conducted qualitative focus group discussions to identify the experience of and difficulties faced by online physical education students in higher education taking online classes, including the impact on their physical activity performance, as well as some health problems they face while taking online classes during the quarantine period, such as weight gain, depression, and anxiety. Finally, utilizing Mayer’s learning model as a conceptual framework, we propose a method that addresses how to effectively manage an optimal future learning system for physical education students, both during and after the COVID-19 outbreak situation. During the isolation period of COVID-19, the required equipment for the participants was rarely available at home while attending the online classes, which inevitably reduced the number of physical education units that could be conveyed. This resulted in a transfer of attention from competition to underperformance, weight gain, and adverse psychological conditions. We conclude that it is important to review and systematize the methods of online physical education learning, particularly highlighting the cultural and educational characteristics of different countries, and to investigate the effectiveness of online physical education as a whole.

Abstract:This study aimed to assess the effect of distance learning on students' self-directed learning skills and motivation during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study relies on a quantitative methodology. The data were collected using an administrative online survey distributed to 427 respondents with different majors (BBA) enrolled in the learning skills and scientific research skills course (obligatory course) in the second semester of the academic year 2020/2021 at The University of Jordan. Regression analysis was used to analyze the proposed hypotheses. The results showed that the independent variable (Distance Learning) positively influenced students' motivation and self-directed learning skills. The recommendations based on the outcomes of this research are useful for educational specialists to develop learning environments about the effects of distance learning on students' self-directed learning skills and motivation. In terms of limitations, the analysis was performed in one university only; therefore, attention must be paid when generalizing the results.
