Abstract:This meta-analysis aims to investigate the effects of residual feed intake (RFI) phenotype on performance, nutrient utilization and meat quality traits in Zebu (Bos indicus) cattle. Twenty-three peer-reviewed publications with 37 treatment means were included in the dataset. Weighted mean difference analysis compared animals categorized into low RFI (more efficient) versus medium or high RFI (less efficient) groups. Data heterogeneity via meta-regression and subgroup analysis, considering variables such as animal age, sex class, experimental duration, RFI group, dietary concentrate, and estimated metabolizable energy intake were also explored. The predominant genetic group of cattle in the dataset was Nellore (89.18%), followed by Brahman (10.81%). More efficient animals (low RFI phenotype) exhibited less dry matter intake (DMI; P < 0.010) than medium or high RFI animals (-0.95 kg vs. -0.42 kg/d). Cattle dietary crude protein and fiber digestibility were consistent across RFI groups (P > 0.05), while dietary ether extract digestibility tended to decrease (P = 0.050) in low RFI animals (-13.20 g/kg DM). Low RFI animals tended to increased (P = 0.065) ribeye area (REA) compared to the high/medium RFI groups, while carcass backfat thickness (BFT) decreased (P = 0.042) compared to high/medium RFI groups. Moreover, there was an increase (P < 0.001) of 0.22 kg in Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) and a reduction (P < 0.001) in the myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI) in low RFI animals. Meat color parameters (lightness [L*] and yellowness [b*]) and visual marbling scores were consistent (P > 0.05) across RFI groups. In conclusion, Zebu cattle classified as efficient (low RFI) exhibited reduced DMI, which improves their feed efficiency. However, BFT and meat quality parameters such as tenderness (WBSF and MFI) and redness [a*] were compromised by low RFI phenotype, highlighting the challenge of enhancing feed efficiency and meat quality traits in Zebu cattle.

Abstract:This study evaluated 53 primiparous cows (36.8±1.23 months old and 484±40.9 kg of body weight) performance tested (GrowSafe® System) from 22±5 to 190±13 days of lactation in order to obtain daily dry matter intake (DMI). The animals received a high-forage diet (forage-to-concentrate ratio of 90:10). Milk production of the cows was evaluated three times by mechanical milking and the energy-corrected milk yield (ECMY) was calculated. Energy status (through the indicators glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and β-hydroxybutyrate), protein status (indicators albumin, urea, and creatinine), mineral status (indicators calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium), and hormonal status (indicators insulin and cortisol) were estimated four times throughout lactation. The residual feed intake (RFI) of cows was calculated considering DMI, average daily gain (ADG) and mid-test metabolic weight (BW0.75) obtained in early lactation (from 22±5 to 102±7 days), and the animals were classified as negative (most efficient) or positive RFI (least efficient). The RFI model explained 53% of the variation in DMI. The mean DMI, ADG, ECMY, and calf weight as a percentage of cow weight were 12.47±2.70 kg DM/day, 0.632±0.323 kg/day, 10.47±3.23 kg/day, and 36.6±5.39%, respectively. Negative RFI cows consumed 11.5% less DM than positive RFI cows, with performance and metabolic profile being similar to those of positive RFI cows, except for a lower milk protein content and higher blood cholesterol concentration. In conclusion, negative (most efficient) and positive RFI (least efficient) Nellore cows, fed an ad libitum high-forage diet, produced similar amounts of milk, fat and lactose and had similar subcutaneous fat thickness, weight, calf weight as a percentage of cow weight, and blood metabolite concentrations (except for cholesterol). Therefore, there are economic benefits to utilizing RFI in a cow herd since cattle had decreased DMI with similar overall performance, making them more profitable due to lower input costs.

Abstract:The residual intake and gain (RIG) aims to select animals that present low feed intake in relation to the expected. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of selection for RIG with performance and carcass traits in Nellore cattle. Initially, residual feed intake (RFI) and residual gain (RG) were determined. From this, the RIG was calculated, and the animals were classified as efficient and inefficient for RIG. The efficient animals for RIG showed higher daily weight gain (DWG), Longissimus muscle area (LMA), and mid-test metabolic body weight (MMBW) than the inefficient ones. No significant correlations were found between subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT), marbling (MAR), LMA, MMBW, and the RIG. Thus, it's concluded that the RIG is a measure that can be used to identify and select animals with higher rates of DWG and LMA without changes in the dry matter intake (DMI), SFT, and MAR. However, this index should still be observed with caution, as it may be dependent on body size. Based on the findings, the selection of animals according to the RIG can be an important factor to generate phenotypic evolution in characteristics such as weight gain and rib eye area without adverse effects on the carcass fat deposition.

Abstract:CHADS 2 score. A substantial proportion of patients at ‘high risk’ in both risk scoring schemes were not on anticoagulation, despite very few patients having HAS-BLED scores of 6 3, which would signify high bleeding risk. Gatellari et al. [10] considered the potentially modifying effect of age, sex and comorbidity on the association between AF and outcomes. Interestingly, although increased age was associated with increasing mortality, this interaction effect illustrated that the differences in mortality between AF and non-AF stroke decreased with increasing age. In other words, the effect of AF versus non-AF in stroke patients was greatest in young patients. At 30 days, the relative risk of mortality due to AF was 3.16 (95% CI 1.92–5.25) amongst those younger than 50, decreasing to 1.23 (95% CI 1.13–1.33) in patients aged 1 85 years. Moreover, the differences in proportion of patients needing rehabilitation and length of hospital stay between AF and non-AF patients were greatest in younger patients (p value interaction ! 0.0006 and ! 0.0001 respectively). Young patients with stroke and AF clearly represent an underrecognised ‘at-risk’ population [15] . In the PRISM study, half of AF-related stroke patients aged ! 65 years had a CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score of 6 2 (51.3%) and 39.8% had a CHADS 2 score of 6 2, signifying a high risk of stroke [10] . We do know that AF patients in ‘realworld’ clinical practice receiving antiplatelet/no therapy have much higher rates of ischaemic stroke than patients receiving anticoagulation [16] . Antiplatelet therapy and no therapy are associated with similar bleeding rates to oral anticoagulation, especially in the elderly [4] . Therefore, there is a strong argument in terms of stroke prevention for increasing the utilisation of anticoagulants in clinical practice, given current under-treatment rates [16] . One recent analysis examining the net clinical benefit balancing the risk of ischaemic stroke and intracranial haemorrhage found a neutral or positive net clinical benefit (ischaemic stroke vs. intracranial haemorrhage) with oral anticoagulation in patients with a CHADS 2 score of 6 0, and CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score of 6 1, whilst there was a negative net clinical benefit at a CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc score = 0 (reflecting the ‘truly low risk’ status of these patients) [17] . Indeed, the net clinical benefit was even greater at HAS-BLED scores of 6 3. Further studies of young stroke patients with AF are warranted in order to establish potential differences in aetiology and pathophysiology of stroke compared with older stroke patients with AF, as illustrated by the study by Gatellari et al. [10] . Such patients may require different diagnostic and treatment strategies. For example, in a recent hospital-based cohort study of French patients with AF, the risk of stroke and thromboembolism was independently increased by the presence of heart failure, previous stroke, or vascular disease in patients ! 65 years of age [18] , suggesting that these factors are particularly important in younger AF patients. The scale of the global burden of stroke is unquestionable and future increases are predicted with changing demography and ageing populations [1, 2] . As a major risk factor for stroke [3] and as a cause of morbidity and mortality in its own right, atrial fibrillation (AF) represents an opportunity for both primary and secondary prevention against stroke [4] , where patients with one or more stroke risk factors should be considered for thromboprophylaxis [5] . Indeed, tremendous advances have taken place and continue to occur in how we approach thromboprophylaxis in AF by balancing stroke and bleeding risk [6–9] . In order to implement this knowledge, reliable data about the risk factors and outcomes of AF must be gathered at several levels from clinical trials and single-centre studies to analyses at the health system level in ‘real-world’ populations. As demographic factors and treatment guidelines and practices change, there is also a growing need for surveillance data [1] . In this issue, Gatellari et al. [10] report a study of adult in-hospital stroke admissions in New South Wales and the outcomes related to concomitant AF between 2000 and 2006 from A Program of Research Informing Stroke Management (PRISM). They found that 25.4% of 26,960 patients with ischaemic stroke had AF recorded during admission, which is comparable to previous studies. The authors are to be commended on this timely largescale study which illustrates the potential utility of analyses at health system level. The PRISM study confirms several well-characterised features of AF in the setting of stroke. First, AF prevalence and rates of all complications increased with age. Second, AF patients were more likely to suffer complications of every type and mortality than stroke patients without AF. Third, AF patients are more likely to have comorbidities, such as hypertension and heart failure, and these comorbidities increase with age. Risk stratification scores have been validated for AF and risk of stroke and are increasingly used by clinicians in order to assess and individualise patient risk [11] . Gatellari et al. [10] assessed the pre-admission risk of stroke (using CHADS 2 [12] and CHA 2 DS 2 VASc [13] scores) and bleeding (using the HAS-BLED score [14] ). Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine breed additive and heterosis effects on growth curves, total milk yield (TMY), calf weaning weight (WW), predicted energy intake (EI), and cow efficiency (CE) of purebred and crossbred beef cows raised in Southern Brazil. The data were from 175 purebred and crossbred cows representing eight genetic groups: Angus (A), Hereford (H), Nelore (N), A × H (AH), H × A (HA), A × N (AN), N × A (NA), and Caracu (C) × A (CA). Growth of the cows was modeled using the nonlinear Brody function and machine milking was used to assess TMY. WW was linearly adjusted to 210 d. EI was predicted with an equation in which the independent variables were estimates of parameters of the Brody function and TMY. The ratio of WW to EI estimated CE. Taurine-indicine heterosis effects were significant for all traits, and greater than those for taurine breed crosses. In general, crossbred cows were heavier at maturity, matured earlier, produced more milk, weaned heavier calves, and were predicted to consume more energy. Thus, they were more efficient than purebred cows, despite their greater predicted feed intake. Among the purebreds, A cows matured most rapidly, weighed the least at maturity, produced the most milk, weaned the heaviest calves, were predicted to consume the least energy; and were therefore most efficient among the breeds that were evaluated. These results are useful as inputs to bioeconomic models that can be used to predict productive and economic outcomes from crossbreeding and to facilitate recommendations for beef producers of southern Brazil and other similar subtropical climatic regions.

Abstract:Abstract Beef cattle have been selected for feed efficiency to reduce feeding costs and environmental impact, but there is a knowledge gap regarding residual feed intake (RFI) and thermotolerance in grazing beef females. Therefore, this study evaluated blood parameters, rumen temperature (RT), activity behavior, and performance of grazing lactating first-calf beef heifers with divergent RFI during summer. Crossbred beef heifers [n = 35; 432 ± 8.40 kg of body weight (BW) and 26 ± 1 mo of age] previously tested and classified for RFI as more (n = 17; LOW-RFI = -0.8 ± 0.214) or less efficient (n = 18; HIGH-RFI = 1.5 ± 0.220) were used in a completely randomized design, grazing continuously a single pasture during summer (June to August). An accelerometer-based sensor recorded lying, standing, and step counts, while RT was automatically recorded using a rumen bolus throughout the 64-d experimental period. Body weight and blood samples were collected on d 0, 13, 28, and 64, while body fat deposition was assessed via ultrasonography on 0, 13, 28, and 50 d. Plasma was analyzed for concentrations of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), free triiodothyronine (fT3), heat shock protein 70 (HSP70), and whole blood used to perform a complete blood cell count. Environmental conditions were assessed by calculating the Climate Comprehensive Index (CCI) using temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and humidity from a weather station within 1 km of the pasture. The resulting CCI index categorized environmental stress from non-existent to imposing extreme danger risk. An RFI × day interaction was observed for NEFA (P = 0.08), with LOW-RFI showing greater concentrations vs. HIGH-RFI on a period classified as not imposing environmental stress. An effect of day (P < 0.01) was detected for BUN, fT3, and HSP70. An RFI × hour (P = 0.02) interaction was detected for RT, where RT was greater from 1400 h to 0600 h in HIGH-RFI. White blood cell counts (P = 0.04) and mean corpuscular volumes were greater (P = 0.05), while plateletcrit was less (P = 0.01) in LOW-RFI. An RFI × day interaction was found for monocytes and monocytes% (P = 0.04), with greater concentrations 24-h after severe stress in HIGH-RFI. The HIGH-RFI tended to have greater RIB fat at d 50 (P = 0.06) despite no differences in gain or BW between groups (P ≥ 0.26). An interaction between RFI × hour (P < 0.01) showed that HIGH-RFI had a greater number of steps and standing time and less lying time during the hottest hours of the day. In summary, this study revealed that RFI influenced physiological and behavioral reactions to environmental stress, favoring the more feed-efficient first-calf beef heifers.

Abstract:Feed and water intake are two important aspects of cattle production that greatly impact the profitability, efficiency, and sustainability of producers. Feed and, to a lesser degree, water intake have been studied previously; however, there is little research on their associated animal behaviors and there is a lack of standardized phenotypes for these behaviors. Feed and water intakes obtained with an Insentec system (Hokofarm Group, The Netherlands) from 830 crossbred steers were used to compute five intake behaviors for both feed and water: daily sessions (DS), intake rate (IR), session size (SS), time per session (TS), and session interval (SI). Variance components and heritabilities were estimated for each trait. Heritabilities for feed intake behaviors were 0.50 ± 0.12, 0.63 ± 0.12, 0.40 ± 0.13, 0.35 ± 0.12, and 0.60 ± 0.12 for DS, IR, SS, TS, and SI, respectively. Heritabilities for water intake behaviors were 0.56 ± 0.11, 0.88 ± 0.07, 0.70 ± 0.11, 0.54 ± 0.12, and 0.80 ± 0.10 for NS, IR, SS, TS, and SI, respectively. Daily dry matter intake (DDMI) and daily water intake (DWI) had heritabilities of 0.57 ± 0.11 and 0.44 ± 0.11. Phenotypic correlations varied between pairs of traits (-0.83 to 0.82). Genetic correlations between DDMI and feed intake behaviors were moderate to high, while genetic correlations between DWI and water intake behaviors were low to moderate. Several significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) were identified for the feed and water intake behaviors. Genes and previously reported quantitative trait loci near significant SNPs were evaluated. The results indicated that feed and water intake behaviors are influenced by genetic factors and are heritable, providing one additional route to evaluate or manipulate feed and water intake.

Abstract:Diagnosis of thrombotic disorders depends on the performance of a panel of laboratory tests for individual components of the coagulation mechanism. Although genetic tests are simple and accurate, most disorders still require functional or immunologic tests for diagnosis. Tests for the most important thrombotic defects are described. These tests may be significantly altered by pregnancy, hormones, thrombotic events, systemic illness, and anticoagulant therapy. These changes make some thrombotic disorders difficult to diagnose during pregnancy. Testing before pregnancy for women with a personal or family history of thrombosis will simplify the interpretation.
Association of genomically enhanced residual feed intake with performance, feed efficiency, feeding behavior, gas flux, and nutrient digestibility in growing Holstein heifers

Abstract:Residual feed intake (RFI), a metric of feed efficiency, is moderately heritable and independent of body size and productivity, making it an ideal trait for investigation as a selection criterion to improve the feed efficiency of growing cattle. The objective of this study was to examine the differences in performance, feed efficiency, feeding behavior, gas flux, and nutrient digestibility in Holstein heifers with divergent genomically enhanced breeding values for RFI (RFIg). Holstein heifers (n = 55; BW = 352 ± 64 kg) with low (n = 29) or high (n = 26) RFIg were selected from a contemporary group of 453 commercial Holstein heifers. Heifers were rotated between 1 of 2 pens, each equipped with 4 electronic feed bunks and 1 pen with a GreenFeed emissions monitoring (GEM) system. Individual dry matter intake (DMI) and feeding behavior data were collected for 84-d. Body weight (BW) was measured weekly and spot fecal samples were collected at weighing. Phenotypic RFI (RFIp) was calculated as the residual from the regression of DMI on average daily gain (ADG) and mid-test metabolic BW (BW0.75). A mixed model including the fixed effect of RFIg classification and the random effect of group was used to evaluate the effect of RFIg classification on response variables. There were no differences (P > 0.05) in BW and ADG for heifers with divergent RFIg; however, low RFIg heifers consumed 7.5% less (P < 0.05) feed per day. Consequently, low RFIg heifers exhibited a more favorable (P < 0.05) RFIp compared to high RFIg heifers (-0.196 vs 0.222 kg/d, respectively). Low RFIg heifers had 8.7% fewer (P < 0.05) bunk visit events per day and tended to have an 11.2% slower (P < 0.10) eating rate. Low RFIg heifers had 7.7% lower (P < 0.05) methane (CH4) emissions (g/d), 6.1% lower (P ≤ 0.05) carbon dioxide (CO2) production (g/d), and 5.6% lower (P ≤ 0.05) heat production (Mcal/d) than high RFIg heifers. However, CH4 yield and CO2 yield (g/kg DMI), and heat production per unit DMI (Mcal/kg DMI) did not differ (P > 0.05) between heifers with divergent RFIg. Dry matter (DM) and nutrient digestibility did not differ (P > 0.05) between heifers with divergent RFIg. Results suggest that selection based on RFIg provides opportunities to select cattle with favorable feed efficiency phenotypes to increase the economic and environmental sustainability of the cattle industry.

Abstract:Abstract Background Ruminants rely upon a complex community of microbes in their rumen to convert host-indigestible feed into nutrients. However, little is known about the association between the rumen microbiota and feed efficiency traits in Nellore ( Bos indicus ) cattle, a breed of major economic importance to the global beef market. Here, we compare the composition of the bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities in the rumen of Nellore steers with high and low feed efficiency (FE) phenotypes, as measured by residual feed intake (RFI). Results The Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio was significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in positive-RFI steers (p-RFI, low feed efficiency) than in negative-RFI (n-RFI, high feed efficiency) steers. The differences in bacterial composition from steers with high and low FE were mainly associated with members of the families Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae and Christensenellaceae, as well as the genus Prevotella . Archaeal community richness was lower ( P < 0.05) in p-RFI than in n-RFI steers and the genus Methanobrevibacter was either increased or exclusive of p-RFI steers. The fungal genus Buwchfawromyces was more abundant in the rumen solid fraction of n-RFI steers ( P < 0.05) and a highly abundant OTU belonging to the genus Piromyces was also increased in the rumen microbiota of high-efficiency steers. However, analysis of rumen fermentation variables and functional predictions indicated similar metabolic outputs for the microbiota of distinct FE groups. Conclusions Our results demonstrate that differences in the ruminal microbiota of high and low FE Nellore steers comprise specific taxa from the bacterial, archaeal and fungal communities. Biomarker OTUs belonging to the genus Piromyces were identified in animals showing high feed efficiency, whereas among archaea, Methanobrevibacter was associated with steers classified as p-RFI. The identification of specific RFI-associated microorganisms in Nellore steers could guide further studies targeting the isolation and functional characterization of rumen microbes potentially important for the energy-harvesting efficiency of ruminants.

Abstract:The thermal environment is important in unit production because the perception of thermal stress can reduce fertility, and productive performance, therefore its management is necessary. The use of non-invasive methods, such as infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography, are widely used to evaluate indicators in animal production, without the need to slaughter the animals. Thus, we aimed to assess the effect of the thermal environment on the physiological parameters and carcass characteristics of Dorper sheep with positive and negative residual feed intake (RFI) using infrared thermography and real-time ultrasonography techniques. Twenty uncastrated male Dorper sheep (17.8 ± 2.4 kg) were confined for 40 days for RFI classification. Sheep were separated into positive RFI (n = 10) and negative RFI (n = 10). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with 2 thermal environments (full sun or shade) and two feed efficiency groups (positive RFI or negative RFI), with 5 replications. The sheep remained in confinement for 60 days. The animals were slaughtered at the end of the experiment and the carcasses dissected for tissue separation. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) were measured at two times (14:00 h and 18:00 h) for periods of 5 days. The RR was determined by indirect auscultation of heart sounds at the level of the laryngotracheal region. The RT was measured introduced a digital clinical thermometer into the animal's rectum. Surface temperature (ST) was obtained using a thermographic infrared camera, collecting the temperatures of the eyeball and skin surface in the regions of the head, ribs, rump, flank and shin. Sheep confined in full sun showed higher RR (P = 0.0001), ST ribs (P = 0.0020), ST rumb (P = 0.0055), ST flank (P = 0.0001) and heat tolerance coefficient (HTC) (P = 0.0010). For sheep confined in full sun, a strong correlation was observed between the RR and the mean ST (MST; r = 0.6826; P = 0.0236) and between the final loin eye area (LEAf) with the real LEA (LEAr) (r = 0.9263; P = 0.0001) and slaughter body weight (SBW) (r = 0.7532; P = 0.0325). For negative RFI sheep, a positive correlation was observed between the RR and the ST rump (r = 0.7343; P = 0.0025) and ST ribs (r = 0.6560; P = 0.0178) and the MST (r = 0.7435; P = 0.0001), between the MST and the LEAr (r = 0.6837; P = 0.0025) and the final LEA (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0144), and between the final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9942; P = 0.0001), BW (r = 0.8415; P = 0.0277) and MST (r = 0.6771; P = 0.0045). Positive RFI sheep confined to shade showed a high correlation between final LEA and LEAr (r = 0.9372; P = 0.0001). The use of shading in confined Dorper sheep, regardless of the RFI classification, reduces the effects of heat stress on physiological parameters.
Effect of Feeding Frequency on Intake, Digestibility, Ingestive Behavior, Performance, Carcass Characteristics, and Meat Quality of Male Feedlot Lambs

Abstract:The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding frequencies (one, two, three, and four times per day) on the performance of male feedlot lambs. Forty Santa Inês male lambs were used with an average age of 120 days approximately and initial body weight of 24.90 ± 1.8 kg (mean ± S.D.). The lambs were distributed to treatment groups in a completely randomized experimental design, with 10 animals per treatment, placed in individual pens. A standard diet consisted of Tifton-85 hay and concentrate with a ratio of 60:40, respectively. The different feeding frequencies did not influence (p > 0.05) the intake of nutritional components, blood parameters, weight gain, ingestive behavior, carcass characteristics, or meat quality of male feedlot lambs. The feeding frequency of 3 and 4 times per day promoted the highest digestibility of neutral detergent fiber (NDF; p = 0.008) and total digestible nutrients (TDN; p = 0.002). The feeding frequency of 3 times per day promoted the highest digestibility of crude protein (CP; p = 0.005). The time devoted to rumination (min/kg DM) was increased (p = 0.029) when the diet was supplied once a day compared to the other feeding frequencies. Based on these results, the recommended feeding frequency for male feedlot lambs is once a day. When feeding at this frequency, the ingestive behavior, productivity, carcass characteristics, and meat quality of male feedlot lambs will not be compromised.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different prenatal nutrition treatments on pregnant cows and their progeny. One hundred and twenty-six pregnant Nellore cows (455.3 ± 8.1 kg) were allocated in three different nutritional treatments during pregnancy: NP—control, PP—protein-energy supplementation in the last 3 months of pregnancy, and FP—the same supplementation throughout pregnancy. After parturition, all cows and calves received the same environmental and nutrition condition. The body condition score (BCS), body weight (BW), ribeye area (REA), backfat thickness (BFT), and rumpfat thickness (RFT) were collected on four occasions during pregnancy in the cows and from birth to finishing in calves. All data (cows and calves) were submitted to an analysis of variance (p < 0.05) using a linear model (MIXED procedure; SAS software). The BW, RFT, and BCS from the cows showed significant differences in the middle third of pregnancy and pre-delivery and RFT postpartum (p < 0.05). For the offspring, the weaning weight showed a tendency (NP lighter than others). In terms of gain, the PP group tended to be higher in RFT at calving (p = 0.06), in REA at finishing (p = 0.09), and in ADG in the same period (p = 0.09). The prenatal nutrition strategies had little or no effect on the beef cattle postnatal performance.

Abstract:Sustainable livestock systems focus on mitigating natural resource use such as water. Dietary management strategies can significantly reduce the water footprint of livestock animals; however, animal health is of concern when animals reduce water intake due to subacute dehydration. To evaluate potential consequences of this nutritional management intervention, a total of 23, 60 ± 3 days old nursing Holstein bull calves, weighing 94.7 ± 12.07 kg, were distributed in a completely randomized design and received one of three diets. Control was a basal diet composed of a non-medicated milk replacer (milk replacer; n = 7), and the additional two diets, were composed of the same non-medicated milk replacer in addition to either lipid [n = 8; milk replacer + menhaden fish oil (3 %)] or soluble carbohydrate [n = 8; milk replacer + corn starch (7%) isoenergetic to fat group] supplements. Animals were offered ad libitum mineral mix and water, as well as 120 g/day of a composite mix of dried microbrewery's spent grains. Data were analyzed as linear and generalized linear mixed models with diet as a fixed effect and animal as random utilizing R studio (R Core Team, 2021, Vienna, Austria; SAS Inst., Cary, NC). Within supplementation groups, lipid supplemented calves had the highest lymphocyte (63.24 vs 57.69 counts/100 lymphocytes; P < 0.033), and lowest neutrophil counts (29.3 vs 35.3 counts/100 lymphocytes; P < 0.047). Supplementation significantly increased total serum protein (P = 0.001) and skin moisture (P < 0.011), with carbohydrate group having the highest skin moisture (5.30 vs 3.99; P < 0.047). Supplementation also decreased fecal fluidity scores (P < 0.001) with no significant change in serum electrolytes (P > 0.256). No significant differences were found amongst treatments for the ingestive behavior (P > 0.338). The carbohydrate-supplemented calves significantly decreased all daily water footprints compared to the control and fat-supplemented groups: blue a 47.55 L decrease, (P < 0.001), green a 265.62 L decrease (P = 0.005), and gray a 55.87 L decrease (P = 0.009) water footprint, as well as total water footprint (369.04 L, P = 0.004). Our results indicate the potential to maintain animal performance while increasing water use efficiency through diet supplementation tailored to mitigate water use, without adverse effects on animal health.

Abstract:Procedures such as transport and marketing can subject animals to water and feed deprivation and impair animal health and performance. Maintaining the mineral status of animals under these conditions can bring benefits to health and performance. The use of hydroxychloride mineral sources can improve mineral status, nutrient digestibility and performance. Two studies were conducted to investigate how the supplementation of 02 trace mineral sources of Cu and Zn and 48-hour water/feed deprivation would affect the performance and metabolism of grass-fed beef cattle. In the first study, 20 castrated and rumen-canulated Nellore steers (BW = 350 ± 132 kg; 20 m) were distributed in individual pens, in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: supplemental Cu and Zn sources from inorganic vs hydroxychloride (HTM) and 48-hours deprivation (WFD) vs unrestricted (WFU) access to water and feed. The 57d of study was divided into two periods: (1) Adaptation from -21d to -1d and (2) evaluation from 0d to 36d. Interaction between deprivation × period was detected (P < 0.05) for digestibility of DM (DMD), organic matter (OMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDFD), and acid detergent fiber (ADFD). Deprivation increased DMD, OMD, NDFD, and ADFD immediately after the deprivation period (3-5d), but impaired digestibility at longer periods such as 11-13d and 32-34d. DM (DMI) and nutrient intake (P = 0.075), as well as NDFD were higher in HTM. Several ruminal parameters were affected by deprivation: short-chain fatty acids concentration decreased, while rumen pH increased (deprivation × time; P < 0.05); decreased propionate, butyrate and increased isobutyrate, isovalerate, and valerate in WFD (deprivation × time; P < 0.05), respectively. In the second study, eighty-four intact Nellore males (BW = 260 ± 35 kg) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to Urochloa brizantha cv. Marandu paddocks for 131d in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. Liver Cu was higher in WFU/HTM animals (mineral × deprivation; P < 0.05). Interaction between deprivation × period (P < 0.05) was detected for BW and average daily gain (ADG). On 2d and 12d after deprivation, WFD increased ADG and recovered the BW lost. In conclusion, water and feed deprivation imposed in these trials were able to impact several nutrient digestibility and ruminal fermentation parameters in short- and long-term. Performance was not affected by the studied factors. Furthermore, supplementation with sources of Cu and Zn hydroxychloride increased Cu in the liver and tended to increase DMI and NDFD.

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of RFI and cow age on the supplement intake and grazing behavior of beef cattle. Average daily supplement intake (kg/cow/d) displayed an RFI × cow age interaction (p < 0.01), with a linear increase in average daily supplement intake with increasing RFI of 3-year-old cows (p < 0.01). Average daily supplement intake (g ∙ kg BW−1 ∙ d−1) displayed an RFI × cow age interaction (p < 0.01), with a quadratic effect on supplement intake of 3-year-old cows (p = 0.01). Cow age displayed a quadratic effect on variation of supplement intake (p < 0.01), where 1-year-old cows had a greater CV of supplement intake than all other cow ages (p < 0.01). Distance traveled displayed a cow age × RFI interaction (p = 0.02), where high-RFI 5-year-old cows traveled further per day than low 5-year-old RFI cows. The probability of grazing site selection was influenced by cow age (p ≤ 0.03). In summary, heifer post-weaning RFI had minimal effects on beef cattle performance, grazing behavior, or resource utilization; however, cow age impacted both grazing behavior and resource use.

Abstract:Abstract This study aimed to assess the genetic relationship among feeding behavior (FB), feed efficiency (FE), and production traits in broilers. A total of 44,234,350 feeders visit logs from 55,400 birds allocated into 88 trials were recorded by radio-frequency identification system. The daily data were averaged per animal for FB traits, considering the entire trial period. FB traits included the number of meals (NMEAL, count/day), time spent at feeders (TSF, hours/day), average portion size (PS, g), feeding rate (FR, g/hour), feeding activity range (FAR, hours/day), number of visited stations (NVS, count/day), and number of visited feeders (NVF, count/day). The total feed intake (FI), residual feed intake (RFI), and feed conversion rate (FCR) were also considered. Further, the body weight was measured at the start (SBW) and ending (FBW) of the trial. Multi-trait animal models were fitted for estimating the (co)variance components, considering the effects of sex and contemporary group as fixed. FB traits presented moderate to high heritability (h2) values, ranging from 0.26±0.02 (FAR) to 0.58±0.02 (TSF), whereas for FE and growth traits the h2 ranged from 0.16±0.01 (FBW) to 0.27±0.02 (RFI). The traits NMEAL, NVS, NVF, and FAR presented negative genetic correlations with FI, SBW, and FBW (-0.36 to -0.13) while PS and FR were positively correlated with all FE and production traits (0.12 to 0.43). RFI only presented non-null genetic correlations with PS (0.26±0.04), FR (0.23±0.03), and NVS (-0.11±0.04). Similarly, NMEAL and NVS also presented a weak negative correlation with FCR (-0.12±0.05 and -0.17±0.05, respectively). FB traits have a sizable genetic component and, therefore, may present a fast response to selection. The results also suggest that future selection for welfare-related feeding behavior (e.g., NMEAL, NVS, and NVF) would not affect negatively FE traits, although it might result in lighter animal lines in the long term.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the transport distance and lairage time on behavioral indicators of zebu beef cattle in the resting pen of a slaughterhouse using the focal animal technique. Eight lots of male zebu cattle, Nelore, aged approximately 4 years old, weighing on average 500 ± 28.5 kg-1, from different municipalities, transported by land, were evaluated. The lots were grouped into two categories: short distance (> 500 km) and long distance (> 500 km). Five focal animals per evaluated lot were used in each cycle of behavior observation, randomly chosen, and visually identified. The animal focal sampling method was used, with instantaneous recording, every 5 min per animal/h. A video camera was used and placed at a fixed point in the corral. After slaughtering, bruises and carcass pH were evaluated. The respiratory rate (RR) was measured in two moments, 30 min after unloading (RR_I) and 1 h before slaughtering (RR_F); behavioral data were divided into four lairage periods (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) equally and evaluated as repeated measures over time. The lairage time lowered the behaviors of headbutting (NCHBs), pushing (PsH), mounting (MT), and chasing away (CA), (p = 0.0001), and these behaviors were more evident in animals transported for short distances in the initial resting times, decreasing as they remained in the resting pen. There was effect of distance on the initial and final pH of the carcass, being greater in the short distance (p = 0.047). There was no effect of distance or lairage time on initial or final RR (p > 0.05). In addition, animals transported over long distances showed less carcass injuries, which were observed during post mortem inspection. It is concluded that animals transported over short distances present a greater number of agonistic behaviors, such as NCHBs, MT, PsH, and CA, predisposing to higher rates of bruising during lairage and more accentuated changes in the final pH of the meat.

Abstract:Abstract The effects of bacterial direct-fed microbial (DFM) mixtures on beef cattle feeding behavior were evaluated. Six ruminally cannulated crossbred Angus steers (BW = 520 ± 30 kg) were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin Square design. Steers were offered a steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet to ad libitum during three, 28 d periods (21-d adaptation and 7-d collection). Treatments assigned were: 1) Control (no DFM, lactose carrier only); 2) Treat-A [L. animalis, P. freudenreichii; B. subtilis; and B. licheniformis, at 1:1:1:3 ratio, respectively; totaling 6 × 109 CFU (50mg)/animal-daily minimum (Chr.Hansen]; and 3) Treat-B, the same DFM combination, but with doses at 1:1:3:1 ratio. Bacterial counts were approximately 30% greater than the minimum expected. The DFM diluted mixtures and carrier (Control) were pre-weighed and stored at -20°C until incorporated into the diet (2 g· animal-1· /day-1) 10 min prior to feeding. For mixing, approximately 1 kg (as is) of the diet being offered was removed from the individual recipient, DFM was mixed by hand, and the mixture was incorporated into the feed allocated for the day. The feeding behavior assessment consisted of a 24 h continuous visual observation (every 5 min) performed by trained personnel. Animals were assessed on d 26 of each period (no other management other than cleaning of the stall), while time spent eating, ruminating, resting, active, and drinking were taken. Time spent chewing was accounted for by adding time spent eating and ruminating. In addition, records allowed the count of the number of meals taken, as well as the time spent on each meal. Data were analyzed using the GLIMMIX procedure of SAS, with animal considered as the experimental unit, the fixed effects of treatment, and random effect of square, period, and animal (square). F-test protected pre-planned orthogonal contrasts was used to compare Control vs. Treat-A and Control vs. Treat-B. Meal number (16/d) and length (8 min/meal) were not affected by treatments (P ≥ 0.54). Main feeding behavior variables consisting of rumination (198 min/d), eating (117 min/d), chewing (315 min/d), drinking (22 min/d), resting (929 min/d), and active (174 min/d) were not affected (P ≥ 0.24) by treatments. A tendency was observed (P = 0.08) where animals offered the Treat-B spent numerically less time ruminating per unit of digestible DM and OM intake compared with Control (13.5 vs. 15.5, and 13.7 vs 15.6 min/kg, respectively). Other behaviors measured in min/kg of DM, NDF, and ADF intake were not affected (P ≥ 0.17) by treatments [rumination (11.5, 60.2, and 181), eating (6.5, 34.4, and 104), chewing (18, 94.6, and 285), and drinking (1.2, 6.6, and 19.8) min/kg, respectively]. The bacterial DFM mixtures offered appear not to directly affect the feeding behavior of beef cattle consuming a steam-flaked corn-based finishing diet.
