Abstract:Mangrove sediment is acknowledged as the critical sink of microplastics (MPs). However, the potential effect of mangrove root systems on the MPs migration in sediment remains largely unknown. Here, our study characterized the spatial distribution of MPs trapped in root hair, rhizosphere, and non-rhizosphere zones, and analyzed their correlations with physicochemical properties of sediments. The significantly increased MPs abundances toward root systems shed light on the distinct effect on the migration of MPs exerted by mangrove root systems. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis revealed that pore water content and pH influenced the abundances of different MP characteristics (shape, color, size, and type) and further promoted the accumulation of MPs toward the root systems. In different mangrove areas from landward to seaward, other sediment properties (median grain size, clay content, and salinity) also controlled MP distribution. Additionally, smaller-sized MPs (<1000 μm) were more easily transported to the root systems. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering root systems effect when investigating the mechanisms of MPs distribution and migration in mangrove sediments.

Abstract:Mangroves, as the key blue carbon ecosystem, are considered 'potential sinks' for microplastics (MPs) in the land-ocean interface zones. However, there is limited understanding of enrichment patterns of MPs in mangrove blue carbon ecosystem, particularly in relation to human activities. This study explored the abundance, composition, and diversity of MPs in mangrove and non-mangrove sediments in Zhanjiang Bay (ZJB) to investigate the effects of human activities on MPs enrichment patterns in the blue carbon system. The results showed that MPs were widely prevalent in all sediment samples, and the abundance of MPs was significantly higher in all mangrove sediments than in non-mangrove sediments ( P < 0.05). Furthermore, the average abundance of MPs was found to be 263.67 ± 85.25 items/kg in non-mangrove sediment samples, whereas in mangrove sediment samples, it was 618.17 ± 71.75 items/kg. The average abundance of MPs in mangroves was about 1.6 times higher than that in non-mangroves, indicating that mangroves have an interception effect on MPs, and human activities are the key factor leading to the difference in MPs enrichment patterns between mangroves and non-mangroves. Furthermore, the predominant MPs shapes in both mangroves and non-mangroves are fragments, with multicolor and green being the most common colors and most MPs sizes ranging between 100 and 330 μm. Besides, there was no significant relationship found between MPs abundance and particulate organic carbon ( P > 0.05), indicating that MPs pollution didn't significantly alter the natural POC pool in ZJB. Overall, this study provided important baseline information on MPs pollution in the mangrove blue carbon ecosystems in ZJB, which was implications for future mitigation of MPs pollution and the management of mangrove ecosystem.

New Insights into the Microplastic Enrichment in the Blue Carbon Ecosystem: Evidence from Seagrass Meadows and Mangrove Forests in Coastal South China Sea

Abstract:Microplastics were recently found to aggregate in the blue carbon ecosystems (BCEs), which are known for their ability to store carbon by slowing down the water flow. However, evidence is largely lacking on how the accumulation of microplastics is related to carbon sequestration in BCEs and if this trap effect is driven by its biological characteristics. In this study, the trap effect of microplastics by BCEs was evaluated for various seagrasses (Zostera japonica, Halophila ovalis, and Halophila beccarii) and mangroves (Aegiceras corniculatum and Avicennia marina). Significant accumulation was found in the seagrass meadow dominated by H. beccarii and the mangrove forest dominated by A. marina, with microplastics enriched by 1.3 to 17.6 times compared to their corresponding unvegetated sites. The abundance of microplastics varied greatly from 17.68 ± 8.10 to 611.75 ± 81.52 particles per kg of dry sediment, with the highest abundance in A. marina mangrove sediments. A strong positive correlation was found between the abundance of microplastics and the particulate organic carbon content at all study sites (Pearson, R = 0.86, p < 0.01). Higher diversity of microplastic colors and size was found in the H. beccarii meadow, and higher diversity of shapes was found in the A. marina forest. Microplastics strengthen nitrogen retention by intensifying nitrogen limitation in mangrove ecosystem sediments

Abstract:Mangrove wetlands are hotspots of the global nitrogen (N) cycle and important sinks of microplastics (MPs) due to their ecotone location between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. However, the effects of MPs on N cycle processes in mangrove ecosystems are still poorly understood. Thus, the present study assessed the impacts by adding MPs to mangrove sediments in a microcosm incubation experiment. The results showed that MPs increased dissolved organic carbon and nitrate but reduced ammonium contents in the sediments. MPs increased C:N stoichiometric and N:C-acquiring enzymatic ratios, indicating an intensified N limitation in mangrove sediments following exposure of MPs. MPs decreased microbial community diversity and shifted sediment microbial communities from r - to K -strategists, consistent with the intensified N limitation. In response, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) rates increased while nitrous oxide (N 2 O) production reduced suggesting more efficient N utilization in MPs treatments. The MPs with heteroatoms such as PLA- and PVC-MPs, increased DNRA rates by 67.5–78.7%, exhibiting a stronger impact than PE-MPs. The variation partitioning analysis revealed that the variances of DNRA rates and N 2 O production could be attributed to synergistic effects of physicochemical properties, nutrient limitation, and microbial community in mangrove sediments. Overall, this study provides pertinent insights into the impacts of MPs as a new carbon source on nutrient limitation and N turnover in mangrove ecosystems.

Abstract:Sediments act as sinks of microplastics (MPs) derived from terrestrial ecosystems. However, the fate and transport of MPs at the zone of sediment-overlying water in reservoir environment are poorly understood. Here, the MPs distribution patterns in surface sediments of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) and dominant mechanisms responsible for the sinking of MPs at the zone of sediment-overlying water were comprehensively investigated. The predominant occurrence of small microplastics (<300 µm, SMPs) in surface sediments of the TGR was found, with buoyant polyethene (PE) was dominant polymer types. Interestingly, the high abundance of SMPs in sediments correlated well with the Ca2+/Mg2+ in overlying water, suggesting that divalent cations in overlying water may enhance the preferential deposition of SMPs. Simulation sinking experiments under the presence of Microcystis aeruginosa and two divalent cations using different-sized PE MPs demonstrated that the greater deposition of SMPs was mainly the result of the formation of biogenic calcite on the surface of MPs rather than magnesium minerals, which provides stronger ballasting effects for SMPs than for large MPs. This study first highlights that the impact of biomineralization on preferential sinking of SMPs and enhances the understanding of the transport behaviour of MPs in aquatic environment.

Abstract:Plastic pollution has emerged as a significant environmental issue in marine ecosystems. The prolonged presence of plastics in mangrove sediments can have a substantial impact on the carbon and nitrogen cycles of these vital environments. We conducted in situ burial exposure experiments to assess microbial colonization and activity on biodegradable and refractory plastics in mangrove sediments, with a focus on their influence on nitrogen cycling. Variations in microbial community succession and metabolic processes on plastic surfaces were primarily determined by the type of plastic polymer. After 60 days of exposure, the abundance of denitrifying bacteria and denitrification-related genes (narG, nirS, nosZ, and norB) was higher on biodegradable plastics. After 360 days, however, a high abundance of ammonia-oxidizing archaea and nitrification-related genes (pmoA-amoA, pmoBamoB, pmoC-amoC, and hao) were found on refractory plastics. Consequently, plastic pollution in mangrove sediments could disrupt the nitrogen cycling equilibrium in these ecosystems, underscoring the critical necessity to regulate and alleviate the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution in crucial coastal areas.
Unveiling microplastic's role in nitrogen cycling: Metagenomic insights from estuarine sediment microcosms

Abstract:Marine microplastics (MPs) pollution, with rivers as a major source, leads to MPs accumulation in estuarine sediments, which are also nitrogen cycling hotspots. However, the impact of MPs on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments has rarely been documented. In this study, we conducted microcosm experiment to investigate the effects of commonly encountered polyethylene (PE) and polystyrene (PS) MPs, with two MPs concentrations (0.3% and 3% wet sediment weight) based on environmental concentration considerations and dose-response effects, on sediment dissolved oxygen (DO) diffusion capacity and microbial communities using microelectrode system and metagenomic analysis respectively. The results indicated that high concentrations of PE-MPs inhibited DO diffusion during the mid-phase of the experiment, an effect that dissipated in the later stages. Metagenomic analysis revealed that MP treatments reduced the relative abundance of dominant microbial colonies in the sediments. The PCoA results demonstrated that MPs altered the microbial community structure, particularly evident under high concentration PE-MPs treatments. Functional analysis related to the nitrogen cycle suggested that PS-MPs promoted the nitrification, denitrification, and DNRA processes, but inhibited the ANRA process, while PE-MPs had an inhibitory effect on the nitrate reduction process and the ANRA process. Additionally, the high concentration of PE-MPs treatment significantly stimulated the abundance of genus (Bacillus) by 34.1% and genes (lip, pnbA) by 100-187.5% associated with plastic degradation, respectively. Overall, in terms of microbial community structure and the abundance of nitrogen cycling functional genes, PE- and PS- MPs exhibit both similarities and differences in their impact on nitrogen cycling. Our findings highlight the complexity of MP effects on nitrogen cycling in estuarine sediments and high concentrations of PE-MP stimulated plastic-degrading genus and genes.
Distinct impacts of microplastics on the carbon sequestration capacity of coastal blue carbon ecosystems: A case of seagrass beds

Abstract:Seagrass beds, as an important coastal blue carbon ecosystem, are excellent at storing organic carbon and mitigating the impacts of global climate change. However, seagrass beds are under threat due to increased human activities and ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) in marine environments. Bibliometric analysis shows that the distribution and accumulation of microplastics in seagrass beds has been widely documented worldwide, but their impacts on seagrass beds, particularly on carbon sequestration capacity, have not been given sufficient attention. This review aims to outline the potential impacts of MPs on the carbon sequestration capacity of seagrass ecosystems across five key aspects: (1) MPs act as sources of organic carbon, contributing to direct pollution in seagrass ecosystems; (2) Impacts of MPs on seagrasses and their epiphytic algae, affecting plant growth and net primary productivity; (3) Impacts of MPs on microorganisms, influencing production of recalcitrant dissolved organic carbon and greenhouse gas; (4) Impacts of MPs on seagrass sediments, altering the quality, structure, properties and decomposition processes of plant litters; (5) Other complex impacts on the seagrass ecosystems, depending on different behaviors of MPs. Latest progress in these fields are summarized and recommendations for future work are discussed. This review can provide valuable insights to facilitate future multidisciplinary investigations and encourage society-wide implementation of effective conservation measures to enhance the carbon sequestration capacity of seagrass beds.

Abstract:Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to marine ecosystems; yet quantifying the mass concentrations of nano- and microplastics (NMPs) in saltmarsh sediments at the ocean-land interface remains a critical research gap. Here, the study employed reliable and efficient analytical techniques, namely pressurized liquid extraction and the double-shot model of thermal desorption/pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, to quantify six different types of NMPs in the sediment of a multi-species saltmarsh, providing the first comprehensive assessment of NMP mass concentration and burial in this saltmarsh environment. The results demonstrate that polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and polypropylene dominated the NMP composition in sediments, constituting 72.6%, 17.3%, and 4.5% of the total NMPs, respectively. The measured NMPs represent an anthropogenic intrusion, constituting 0.10%–0.23% of the carbon storage in the saltmarsh. By examining the vertical concentration profiles, this study unveiled the influence of saltmarsh vegetation on NMP deposition in sediments, establishing a connection with local sedimentation patterns and the historical zonation of plant species such as Scirpus mariqueter , Phragmites australis and Spartina alterniflora . These findings underscore the crucial role of saltmarsh vegetation in facilitating NMP settling and retention, highlighting the necessity of considering vegetation dynamics in examining the emerging NMP pollution in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Microplastics(MPs) are ubiquitous, difficult to degrade, and potentially threatening to organisms in marine environment, so it is important to clarify the factors that affect their biogeochemical processes. The impact of biological activities on the MPs in marine environment is ubiquitous and complex, and there is currently a lack of systematic summaries. This paper reviews the effects of biological actions on the migration, distribution and degradation of MPs in marine environment from four aspects: biological ingestion and digestion, biological movement, biological colonization and biological adhesion. MPs in seawater and sediments can be closely combined with organisms through three pathways: biological ingestion, biofilm formation or adhesion to organisms, and are passed between species at different trophic levels through the food chain. The generation and degradation of faecal pellets and biofilms can alter the density of "environmental MPs", thereby affecting their vertical migration and deposition in water bodies. The movement of swimming organisms and the disturbance by benthic organisms can promote the migration of MPs in water and vertical migration and resuspension in sediments, thereby changing the distribution of MPs in local sea areas. The grinding effect of the digestive tract and the secretion of chemicals from the biofilm (such as enzymes and acids) can reduce the particle size and increase surface roughness of MPs, or even degrade them completely. Besides, biological adhesion may be an important mechanism affecting the distribution, migration and preservation of MPs. There may be complex interactions and linkages among marine dynamical processes, photochemical degradation and biological processes that collectively affect the biogeochemical processes of MPs, but their relative contributions remain to be more studied.
Vertical Distribution, Accumulation, and Characteristics of Microplastics in Mangrove Sediment in China

Abstract:Mangroves in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide are recognized as important sinks for microplastics (MPs). However, recent studies have focused on surface sediments, and in China, the vertical distribution and characteristics of MPs in mangrove sediments remain poorly understood. In this study, sediment cores of 100 cm depth were collected from six representative mangroves in China to investigate MPs via chronological analysis. Futian had the highest abundance of MPs (0-3123 n/kg), followed by Dongfang, Yunxiao, Zhanjiang, Dongzhaigang and Fangchenggang. The earliest MPs occurring in mangroves were dated back to 1955, and their abundance increased exponentially from bottom to surface sediments. MPs were mainly white in color, fiber-shaped, 1000-5000 μm in size, and of polypropylene/polyethylene polymer types. Furthermore, the MPs in the urban mangrove also showed a higher diversity in color. The results showed that the MP stocks in the urbanized Futian mangrove reached 1828 mg/m3, an order of magnitude higher than in other areas (251 ± 180 mg/m3), contributing to 0.0057 % of the carbon storage of the sediment. The abundance of MPs in mangrove sediments is expected to increase by 2.38-9.54 times by 2030, and therefore deserve further attention.
Vertical distribution of microplastics in sediment columns along the coastline of China

Abstract:At present, there has been relatively less coverage of microplastics (MPs) pollution in sediment columns, especially across a large geographical span. This study collected sediment columns across 11 provinces along the coastline of China for MPs pollution investigation. The study found higher MPs diversity (Simpson diversity index) in sediment columns than in surface sediments, mostly comprising fiber MPs with dominant transparent and blue colors. Lower MPs pollution was noted in mangrove reserves, while estuarine and coastal areas showed higher pollution levels. Spearman correlation analysis shows that vertical of MPs abundance significantly decreased with depth at 6 of 11 sites. Large-sized MPs with diverse colors in deeper sediments (>40 cm) suggests that burial processes may render MPs more resistant to degradation. Our research highlights varied MPs distribution in coastal sediment, aiding future marine MPs pollution prediction and assessment.
Spatial and seasonal variations in biofilm formation on microplastics in coastal waters

Abstract:At present, microplastics (MPs) have gradually become a hot issue in marine environmental pollution and may pose a potential threat to marine ecosystems. Since MPs are not easily biodegradable, they can provide the attachment substrates for various organisms, which will affect their floating and transport, and may also lead to the invasion of harmful microorganisms. In this study, polypropylene, polyethylene, polylactic acid pellets, and glass particles were exposed for 6 weeks in different seasons at three stations in the Yellow Sea, China. The results showed that the total amounts of biofilms significantly varied among seasons and functional zones and that the temperature of seawater was the main influencing factor. A variety of biological communities (especially diatoms and bacteria) and extracellular polymeric substances were observed on the MP surfaces using scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Sequencing analysis indicated that the structure and composition of microbial communities on MPs mainly varied with seasons and locations. In addition, most of the microorganisms were generally attached to the surface and were not any specific selection of plastic by different chemical compositions. However, the bacteria inhabiting microplastics harbored distinct metabolisms. Our results suggest that low-density MPs may settle quickly in summer in some eutrophic areas.

Abstract:Microplastic (MP) pollution in global sediment has been intensely studied and recognized as the ultimate sink for residual MPs in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. During MP long-term retention in sediments, plastic-degrading bacteria (i.e., Flavobacteriaceae, Bacillus, Rhodobacteraceae, and Desulfobacteraceae) can utilize those MPs as their carbon and energy sources through enzyme (hydrolase and oxidoreductase) reactions, which further alter or transform high molecular weight MP polymers into lower molecular weight biodegradation byproducts (i.e., monomers and oligomers) and release toxic additives. In other words, MPs can act as durable substrates for plastic-degrading bacteria in sediments. However, to date, the biodegradation rates of MPs in sediment environments are still poorly understood due to their limited degradation efficiency. Herein, we review the enzyme-induced biodegradation processes of MPs in sediment environments, which is important for accessing the alteration of MP properties and their potential ecological risks after undergoing long-term weathering processes. In addition, the factors associated with the MP properties (polymer type, molecular weight, crystallinity, and hydrophobicity) and sediment conditions (sediment type, temperature, pH, salinity, and oxygen content) that influence plastic degradation processes are also reviewed. The mechanisms may relate to the MP properties and sediment conditions that can influence microbial abundance, enzyme concentrations, and enzyme activities, thus altering MP biodegradation ratios. We anticipate that the observations reviewed in this study will pose a new issue to better understand the formation process, fate, and potential ecological risks associated with aged MPs in sediment environments.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), as new pollutants in agroecosystems, have already attracted widespread attention from scientists. However, our understanding of MP geographic distribution and its influencing factors across spatial scales remains poor. Here, a regional-scale field investigation was conducted to assess the distribution characteristic of MPs in five major rice-growing regions of China, and we explored the roles of biological and abiotic factors, especially stoichiometry and microbial influences on MP distribution. MPs were observed in all sampling sites, averaging 6,390 ± 2,031 items⋅kg –1 . Sizes less than 0.5 mm and black and transparent MPs dominated. Fiber, classified as one of the MP shapes, occurred most frequently. MP community analysis, firstly used in paddy soil, revealed more black MPs abundance in Henan (HE), more rayon, blue, and other colors MPs in Hunan (HN), more transparent MPs in Tianjing (TJ), and more PE MPs in Heilongjiang (DB). Higher MP community diversity was found in most south paddy soils of this study, due to a broader range of sources. C/N showed a positive relationship with pellet-shaped MP abundance and MPs of size between 2 and 5 mm ( P < 0.05). Chao1 index of soil microbial communities was positively correlated with the MP abundance, MPs of size less than 0.5 mm, and fiber abundance. The minimum temperature was positively correlated with MP abundance ( P < 0.05), implying the potential effects of the freeze-thaw process might exist. The regression analysis highlighted the important role of population quantity in determining MP abundance ( R = 0.421, P = 0.02). This study confirmed the wide distribution of MPs in different soil depths of paddy lands in China and demonstrated that its distribution was influenced by population quantity and environmental variables, such as microbiology. These findings could provide a basis for the toxicological behavior of MPs and the potential risk to human health.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution is widely investigated owing to its potential threats to river ecosystems. However, it remains unclear whether hydraulic disturbance deepens or mitigates the effects of MPs-contaminated sediments on the river environment. Herein, we studied the impact of sediment aggregates, organic matter, and enzyme activity, with emphasis on microbial community structure and function in sediments exposed to MPs (1 %, 5 %, and 10 % w /w) in conjunction with hydraulic disturbance. The experimental results showed that the influence of MPs on the sediment under hydraulic disturbance is more significant than that of static culture, especially for various environmental factors (MWD, MBC, and sucrase activity etc.). The proportions of the >0.05 mm-fraction aggregates increased from 74–76 % to 82–88 % in the sediment throughout the entire disturbance process. It has been found that the disturbance generally promotes the interaction between MPs and sediments. FAPROTAX analysis demonstrated that the disturbance reduced the difference in effects on microbial functional genes between the control group and the MPs-added groups by up to 10 times, suggesting that the effects of disturbance on MPs-contaminated sediments are relatively complex. This work provides new insights into the effects of hydraulic disturbance on physicochemical properties and microbial communities of MPs-contaminated sediment.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) can provide a unique niche for microbiota in waters, thus regulating the nutrients and carbon cycling. Following the vertical transport of MPs in waters, the compositions of attached biofilm may be dramatically changed. However, few studies have focused on the related ecological function response, including the carbon metabolism. In this study, we investigated the microbial carbon metabolism patterns of attached biofilm on different MPs in the vertical profile of urban rivers. The results showed that the carbon metabolism capacity of biofilm on the degradable polylactic acid (PLA) MPs was higher than that in the non-degradable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MPs. In the vertical profile, the carbon metabolism rates of biofilm on two MPs both decreased with water depth, being 0.74 and 0.91 folds in bottom waters of that in surface waters. Specifically, the utilization of polymers, carbohydrate, and amine of PLA biofilm was significantly inhibited in the bottom waters, which were not altered on the PET. Compared with surface waters, the microbial metabolism function index of PLA biofilm was inhibited in deep waters, but elevated in the PET biofilm. In addition, the water quality parameters (e.g., nutrients) in the vertical profile largely shaped carbon metabolism patterns. These findings highlight the distinct carbon metabolism patterns in aquatic environments in the vertical profile, providing new insights into the effects of MPs on global carbon cycle.

Abstract:The ecological impact of microplastics (MPs) in coastal environments has been widely studied. However, the influence of small microplastics in the actual environment is often overlooked due to measurement challenges. In this study, Hangzhou Bay (HZB), China, was selected as our study area. High-throughput metagenomic sequencing and micro-Raman spectrometry were employed to analyze the microbial communities and microplastics of coastal sediment samples, respectively. We aimed to explore the ecological impact of MPs with small sizes (≤ 100 μm) in real coastal sediment environments. Our results revealed that as microplastic size decreased, the environmental behavior of MPs underwent alterations. In the coastal sediments, no significant correlations were observed between the detected MPs and the whole microbial communities, but small MPs posed potential hazards to eukaryotic communities. Moreover, these small MPs were more prone to microbial degradation and significantly affected carbon metabolism in the habitat. This study is the first to reveal the comprehensive impact of small MPs on microbial communities in a real coastal sediment environment.

Abstract:Global estuarine and coastal zones are facing severe microplastics (MPs) pollution. Sulfate reducers (SRB) and denitrifiers (DNB) are two key functional microorganisms in these zones, exhibiting intricate interactions. However, whether and how MPs modulate the interactions between SRB and DNB, with implications for denitrification and associated N 2 O emissions, remains poorly understood. Here, we simultaneously investigated the spatial response patterns of SRB-DNB interactions and denitrification and associated N 2 O emissions to different MPs exposure along an estuarine gradient in the Yangtze Estuary. Spatial responses of denitrification to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyadipate/butylene terephthalate (PBAT) MPs exposure were heterogeneous, while those of N 2 O emissions were not. Gradient-boosted regression tree and multiple regression model analyses showed that sulfide, followed by nitrate (NO 3 − ), controlled the response patterns of denitrification to MPs exposure. Further mechanistic investigation revealed that exposure to MPs resulted in a competitive and toxic (sulfide accumulation) inhibition of SRB on DNB, ultimately inhibiting denitrification at upstream zones with high sulfide but low NO 3 − levels. Conversely, MPs exposure induced a competitive inhibition of DNB on SRB, generally promoting denitrification at downstream zones with low sulfide but high NO 3 − levels. These findings advance the current understanding of the impacts of MPs on nitrogen cycle in estuarine and coastal zones, and provide a novel insight for future studies exploring the response of biogeochemical cycles to MPs in various ecosystems.

Benthic biofilms in riverine systems: A sink for microplastics and the underlying influences

Abstract:Rivers are known as major pathways for transporting microplastics from terrestrial areas to the marine environment. However, the behavior of microplastics in terms of retention and transport within riverine systems remains unclear. While considerable efforts have been made to investigate the water column and sediment, limited attention has been given to understanding the interplay between microplastics and benthic biofilms. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the distribution of biofilm-trapped microplastics along the CaoE River and identify the factors influencing the immobilization of microplastics by benthic biofilms. The findings of this study revealed that benthic biofilms served as a sink of microplastics in the CaoE River, with an average abundance of 575 items/m2 in tributaries and 894 items/m2 in the main stream. The dominant shape of microplastics was fiber, while the primary polymer type was polyethylene terephthalate. The distribution of microplastics exhibited significant spatial heterogeneity, as indicated by their abundance and characteristics. In order to reveal the intriguing phenomenon, variations of influencing factors were estimated, including physicochemical characteristics of water, extracellular polymeric substances of benthic biofilms, and microbial communities of benthic biofilms. A partial least squares path modeling analysis was performed using these variables, revealing that water velocity and microbial diversity of benthic biofilms were the key factors influencing the interaction between microplastics and benthic biofilms. In summary, this study provides substantial evidence confirming the crucial role of benthic biofilms in the immobilization of microplastics, which expands concerns about microplastic pollution in the riverine systems. Furthermore, uncovering the underlying influences of microplastic-biofilm interactions will facilitate the development of effective strategies for the control and management of microplastic pollution.
