Abstract:The frequent relocation of professional football clubs is a phenomenon unique to Chinese professional football, which has long attracted extensive attention from policy makers and scholars. Using data on spatial geography and competitive levels between 1994 and 2021, this research explores the spatial distribution and migration characteristics of top professional football clubs in China, in which GIS spatial analysis and exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) were used to analyze the influence of the regional economic, demographic, and developmental levels of the sports industry and institutional supply on the distribution and migration of clubs. The results indicate the following: (1) the overall spatial distribution of professional football clubs in China shows the pattern of "more in the east and less in the west", and the degree of club concentration gradually increases over time; (2) the migration frequency and downward migration of professional football clubs in China gradually decreased during the period of C League and CSL, and the overall situation tends to be stable; and (3) in the early stages of development of professional leagues, changes in ownership and local policy supply had a significant impact on the distribution and migration of professional clubs. As time progressed, the top-down design of institutional arrangements changed, and the regional economic, demographic, and developmental levels of the sports industry gradually became the essential determinants of the distribution and migration of professional football clubs. In the future, Chinese professional football clubs should focus on rationalizing the advantages of the regional economy, demography, and sports industry as well as reducing their reliance on short-term resources, such as corporate investment and policy benefits.

Spatial Distribution Pattern and Influencing Factors of Sports Tourism Resources in China

Abstract:Sports tourism is an emerging tourism product. In the sports and tourism industry, resource mining is the foundation that provides positive significance for theoretical support. This study takes China’s sports tourism boutique projects as the study object, exploring its spatial distribution pattern through the average nearest neighbor index, kernel density, and spatial autocorrelation. On the strength of the wuli–shili–renli system approach, the entropy value method and geographic detector probe model are used to identify the driving factors affecting the spatial distribution pattern. Findings reveal the following: (1) From 2013 to 2014, the sports tourism resources in China present a distribution pattern with the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration as the high-density core area and the Guizhou–Guangxi border area and the western Hubei ecological circle as the sub-density core areas. (2) From 2014 to 2018, China’s sports tourism boutique projects increased by 381, and the regional differences among various provinces tended to converge. The high-density core area remained unchanged. The sub-density cores are now the Yunqian border area of the Karst Plateau, the Qinglong border area of the Qilian Mountains, and the Jinji border area of the Taihang Mountains, shaping the distribution trends of “depending on the city, near the scenery” and “large concentration, small dispersion”. (3) The proportion of provincial sports tourism development classified as being in the coordinated stage is 61.29%. (4) The explanatory power of the factors affecting the spatial layout in descending order is natural resource endowment, sports resource endowment, transportation capacity, industrial support and guidance, market cultivation and development, people’s living standards, software and hardware services, and economic benefit effects. The explanatory power of the interaction of two different factors is higher than that of the single factor.
What Factors Determine the Success or Failure of ‘Cross-Border’ Career Development of Chinese Retired Olympic Champions? A Qualitative Comparative Analysis

Abstract:In recent years, advanced professional athletes' career development after retirement has become an issue in which society is increasingly interested. However, there are very few theoretical studies exploring the relevant factors influencing the nature of athletes' transition. Based on 80 Chinese Olympic champions who have retired and pursued cross-border careers (i.e. careers outside the sphere of their own competitive sport) for more than five years, this study uses qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to analyze five factors, including gender, psychological capital, human capital, individual social influence of winning sport event and 'cross-border distance'. This study shows that: first, the higher the level of psychological capital, human capital, sport event influence and the smaller cross-border distance, the greater the possibility that retired Olympic champions will succeed in cross-border career development. Second, when levels of human capital and sport event influence are not sufficiently high, athletes' psychological capital plays a decisive role in successful cross-border career development. Third, athletes' level of psychological capital and the level of influence of their sport event are 'bottlenecks' which restrict cross-border career success. These results have theoretical and practical value for optimizing placement policy for retired athletes, and guiding the career planning of both competing and retired elite athletes.Supplemental data for this article is available online at https://doi.org/10.1080/09523367.2021.1953993 .
Research on Spatial Migration Patterns and Influencing Factors of Western Talents: Based on Data from "Double first-class" Universities in China

Abstract:The western region's talent loss issue has received widespread attention. Promoting the construction of human resources in the west has become key to forming an important high-quality development pole in western China. This study analyzes the graduate migration data of first-class universities in western China between 2016 and 2020 and draws the following conclusions: Overall, the retention rate of college graduates in western China across seven provinces is high, with a relatively higher retention rate observed in the place of study in four southwestern provinces. The retention rate of different provinces' place of study showed different trends during the period of 2016-2020, and the retention rate of different provinces also showed different trends during the same period. In 2020, western college graduates continued to show a preference for employment in popular provinces such as Guangdong, Beijing, and Shanghai, while they showed a greater inclination towards choosing employment opportunities in the South and Central regions of China. The results based on the directed migration model show that economic factors and natural and educational resources in a city have a greater impact on employment decisions. Analysis of heterogeneity found that graduates from areas with a high sticking rate are more susceptible to population size, human resources, and economic factors, and that cultural resources and transportation resources also have a significant impact on talent migration. Policy recommendations include western provinces taking higher education as a key factor to utilizing employment retention advantages to attract and retain high-quality talents.

Abstract:Abstract The improvement of well-being of residents is the core of the people-centred urbanization. Inhabitants’ emphasis on healthy lifestyle draws attention to the provision of sports infrastructure. However, the spatial pattern of sport infrastructure development and in particular the driving forces from urbanization across China have not been examined yet in the literature. This paper aims to explore how the national sports infrastructure in mainland China is driven and scaled by urbanization, using data from the sixth National Sports Venues Census and a multi-scale geographically weighted regression approach. The results revealed strong regional inequality in the development of sports infrastructure in the stage of accelerating urbanization in China, with better provision of sports infrastructure in eastern than in western regions. The three dimensions of urbanization (urban population, public financial expenditure and built-up area) significantly explained the spatial disparity between 289 cities at prefecture-city level. There should be a feedback loop between the accumulative developments of urbanization and sports infrastructure. The contributing driving forces and subsequent regional heterogeneity suggest that sports space theory, the inequality amplification model, and hysteresis effect are comparatively suitable for explaining the spatial inequality characteristics of sports infrastructure development in China. A Sport Inequality Alert was conceptualized as a policy instrument for monitoring regional inequality and governing the development of sports infrastructure. It is argued that sports infrastructure development should be integrated into the national strategy for sustainable New-type Urbanization.

Abstract:The paper uses spatial panel data on the number of patents in the field of sports in each province from 2017–2022 to explore the spatial and temporal evolution process of the innovation capacity of China’s sports industry and analyze its development trend based on theories related to economic geography, using exploratory spatial data analysis (ESDA) and Spatial-temporal correlation analysis research methods. The study shows that: 1. there is a large spatial regional disparity in the innovation capacity of China’s sports industry, showing an obvious pattern of strength in the east and weakness in the west. 2. there is an obvious phenomenon of spatial agglomeration in the innovation capacity of China’s sports industry and the agglomeration phenomenon in space is gradually increasing. 3. there is a spatial spillover effect in the innovation capacity of China’s sports industry, and the inward spillover continues to strengthen mainly into Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangsu provinces, while the outward spillover mainly goes to Guangdong, Hubei, Hebei, Hunan, Sichuan. Sports industry innovation capacity development put forward three suggestions: to promote the development of sports industry in the northwest region; to play the advantages of regional characteristics of sports industry; to accelerate the integration of neighboring regions to build the process. in order to help the high-quality development of sports industry.

Abstract:Demographic change is a fundamental characteristic of China’s demographic development. The primary problem in China’s population development has shifted in recent years from overall pressure to structural challenges. Using data from China’s seventh demographic census, this study examines the dynamics of sports consumption growth from the perspective of population structure, analyzes the characteristics of the current population structure and the current state of sports consumption development, and establishes a regression to examine the impact of population structure change trends on sports industry development. The study demonstrates that there are varying degrees of correlation between different demographic trends and the sports industry in China’s aging population: the added value per capita of the sports industry is significantly (p < 0.01), positively correlated with the proportion of the elderly population and the number of graduates from general higher education institutions. While the expansion of the sports sector continues to be positive, there are numerous issues that need to be addressed. To encourage the development of a high-quality sports industry, proactive countermeasures are proposed to adjust population policy, increase population quality, and promote the comprehensive upgrading of sports consumption.

Abstract:Over the course of 20 years, from 1999 to 2018, the Chinese Go League has gradually developed and flourished, becoming a significant part of urban sports culture. Using mathematical statistics, spatiotemporal trajectory, and geospatial analysis, this research investigates the spatiotemporal distribution pattern and diffusive evolution characteristics of Chinese Go League clubs from the perspective of sports geography. The results of this study show that the following: (1) Over the past 20 years, the number of Chinese Go League clubs has increased in a "stepped" pattern, and there is still plenty of room for expansion. (2) Chinese Go League clubs are primarily located in municipalities directly under the central government and provincial capital cities (accounting for 82.6% of the total), with the Bohai Rim, Yangtze River Delta, and Southwest region of China forming a spatial pattern. (3) Host cities of Chinese Go League clubs are generally discrete, with clustering and random distribution occurring only seldom. The spatial distribution also tends to favor southern cities. (4) Chinese Go League clubs frequently change their names and host cities, and they have a variety of links with those cities, which primarily includes urban stability, urban transition, and urban fluctuation. In future, the professionalization and sustainable development of Chinese Go industry can be enhanced by the marketability of Chinese Go clubs, developing new markets for Chinese Go, and building a healthy development model with multiple linkages of Chinese Go clubs, sponsors, and host cities.
Research on the Resilience Evaluation and Spatial Correlation of China's Sports Regional Development Under the New Concept

Abstract:In order to fully implement the new development concept, bring into full play the potential of sports development, and maintain the resilience of China's sports development. This paper studies the resilience evaluation and spatial correlation of Chinese sports development under the new development concept. First, we constructed Resilience Evaluation Indexes System for Sports Development in China based on the analysis of the resilience features of sports development and the DPSIR model, which is from the five aspects of "driving force - pressure - state - influence - response." Second, used Coefficient of Variation and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) Method to measure the resilience level of sports development in 31 provinces in China from 2013 to 2017. Then, we introduced the obstacle degree model to identify the obstacle factors that hinder the resilience of Chinese sports development in different periods. Finally, we used the global and local Moran indexes to analyze the spatial correlation of China sports regional development. The results showed that: (1) overall, the development level of sports resilience in 31 provinces in China showed an upward trend from 2013 to 2017, while some provinces showed obvious fluctuations. (2) The obstacles to the development of sports resilience in China mainly include sports scientific research equipment, the number of national fitness monitoring stations, the number of national fitness centers, the full-time equivalent of (R&D) personnel, and the number of sports scientific research projects. The response subsystem is the main obstacle factor that affects the improvement of the resilience level of sports development in China. (3) There is a positive spatial autocorrelation between the resilience level of sports development and regional spatial distribution, and the correlation shows a weakening trend, and the internal difference is significant. Finally, we concluded that we must take the new development philosophy as the guiding principle. First, we should stick to innovation-driven development to fully upgrade the resilience of China's sports development. Second, we should adhere to the principle of coordinated development to promote the overall and balanced development of sports. Lastly, we should promote shared development so as to deliver benefits for all in an equal way.

Abstract:Introduction: Physical health is fundamental to a country's socio-economic advancement. An in-depth exploration of the spatial distribution and dynamic evolution of national physical fitness across China is crucial for enhancing the country's overall physical health. This study aims to provide valuable insights into the geographical and temporal patterns of physical fitness, informing strategies for national physical fitness improvement. Methods: Employing data from China's national physical fitness monitoring of 31 provinces, cities, and districts for the years 2005, 2010, and 2015, this study utilizes the Gini coefficient, its decomposition, and nonparametric density estimation methods. These techniques are applied to analyze the spatial disparities and temporal trends in national physical fitness levels among different demographics, including the overall population, males, females, and urban and rural residents. Results: The study reveals that the regional disparity in China's national physical fitness initially narrowed and then expanded across the general population, females, and in both urban and rural areas, while consistently increasing among males. In terms of geographical distribution, the East, Middle, and West regions show significant heterogeneity, with the East-West gap being the most pronounced (Gini coefficients of 0.0249, 0.0230, 0.0263). The contribution rate of regional gaps was highest (54.40% -64.69%), followed by regional disparities (24.78% -27.15%), and the contribution of hypervariable density difference was the smallest (10.53% -19.75%). Despite a slight improvement in overall national physical fitness, the absolute regional disparities have further widened. Conclusions: Provinces with lower levels of national physical fitness demonstrate a 'club convergence' trend, indicating regional clustering of similar fitness levels. Additionally, a 'catch-up effect' is evident in rural areas, particularly in provinces with historically lower levels of national physical fitness. These findings suggest the need for region-specific public health strategies to address the growing disparities in national physical fitness across China.
Geography of Talent in China During 2000–2015: an Eigenvector Spatial Filtering Negative Binomial Approach

Abstract:The increase in China’s skilled labor force has drawn much attention from policymakers, national and international firms and media. Understanding how educated talent locates and re-locates across the country can guide future policy discussions of equality, firm localization and service allocation. Prior studies have tended to adopt a static cross-national approach providing valuable insights into the relative importance of economic and amenity differentials driving the distribution of talent in China. Yet, few adopt longitudinal analysis to examine the temporal dynamics in the stregnth of existing associations. Recently released official statistical data now enables space-time analysis of the geographic distribution of talent and its determinants in China. Using four-year city-level data from national population censuses and 1% population sample surveys conducted every five years between 2000 and 2015, we examine the spatial patterns of talent across Chinese cities and their underpinning drivers evolve over time. Results reveal that the spatial distribution of talent in China is persistently unequal and spatially concentrated between 2000 and 2015. It also shows gradually strengthened and significantly positive spatial autocorrelation in the distribution of talent. An eigenvector spatial filtering negative binomial panel is employed to model the spatial determinants of talent distribution. Results indicate the influences of both economic opportunities and urban amenities, particularly urban public services and greening rate, on the distribution of talent. These results highlight that urban economic- and amenity-related factors have simultaneously driven China’s talent’s settlement patterns over the first fifteen years of the 21st century.

Abstract:The expansion of sports in China is astounding. Given the country's focus on athletic achievement, it is crucial to comprehend the different facets of sports. This research examines China's athletic success in training, recuperation, motivation, and environment. The moderation-mediation strategy is used to understand how these variables affect athletic performance. This study fills a gap in understanding Chinese players' on-field performance. The study examined 355 Chinese athletes from various regions and sports. The sample has a balanced gender distribution, diverse age distribution, and representation from various regions. Furthermore, training programs, recovery strategies, motivation, psychological well-being, support systems, and experience levels influence athletes' sports performance. The study reveals that the coefficients indicate that training, recuperation tactics, motivation, and support systems affect athletic performance. Psychological health emerges as a critical mediator in explaining the effects of these factors on performance outcomes. Additionally, athlete experience moderates the influence of these variables, highlighting nuanced differences. These findings offer crucial insights for enhancing the performance of Chinese athletes. By adopting a moderation-mediation approach, this research illuminates the interconnected dynamics among key components, enriching our understanding of avenues for athlete improvement. Specifically, the results underscore the interconnectedness of athletes' psychological well-being, on-field experience, and competitive performance, emphasizing the importance of tailored interventions. This study could help Chinese politicians, sports psychologists, and coaches enhance athletes' performance.
Exploring China's success at the Olympic Games: a competitive advantage approach

Abstract:Research question: Much research has been carried out to analyse factors contributing to China's notable success at the Olympic Games over the past decade. However, research which examines China's deliberate Olympic medal strategy remains relatively uncharted territory. Thus this paper seeks to address this gap and examines how China has become one of the most successful superpowers at the Summer Olympic Games within the last two decades by virtue of the application of the competitive advantage framework. Research methods: Seven semi-structured interviews were conducted with key stakeholders of elite sport in China. These data were supplemented by a range of official publications of sports governing bodies in China, their websites and related information from the websites of influential media. Results and findings: It is evidenced that China's current Olympic configuration and (gold) medal distribution among sports/disciplines are largely underpinned by Tian Maijiu's research on cluster-based sports training and the ‘Five-Word principle’ (i.e. Small, Fast, Women, Water and Agile). In addition, there is clear evidence of China's continuous expansion of its market and the ambition to greater success in gold-medal abundant and collective ball sports/disciplines. Implications: This article concludes by critically examining the key characteristics and outcomes of China's approach to clustering and prioritisation, attempting to provide some insights into the establishment or refinement of Olympic (gold) medal strategy for other nations, where China may provide some useful lessons. The compatibility of the competitive advantage framework with the analysis of China's Olympic success is also discussed.

Abstract:Public sports venues serve as a crucial material medium for human athletic activities. Research on their spatial distribution holds profound implications for optimizing spatial layout and promoting human sports endeavors. This paper takes interest points of sports venues in China as research samples, employing GIS spatial analysis tools, mathematical statistics, and Geo-detector as research methods. It systematically investigates the spatial distribution characteristics and causes of sports venues in China, aiming to provide insights and references for the optimization of spatial arrangement, sustainable development, and relevant policy formulation of sports venues in the country. The results indicate that: (1) In terms of overall distribution characteristics, sports venues in China present a multi-centric agglomeration in geographical space. (2) From a regional distribution perspective, the spatial layout of these venues reveals a pattern of "more in the south, less in the north," "dense in the southeast, sparse in the northwest," and a coastal strip distribution. (3) Regarding spatial correlation, the hot and cold spot partitions of sports venues largely align with the "Hu-Line", with their spatial distribution tending towards a positively correlated pattern of high–high clustering and low–low clustering. (4) There is evident heterogeneity in factors affecting sports venues' spatial distribution. The distribution results from the interactive coupling of multiple factors, where the interaction between any two factors offers stronger explanatory power for the spatial layout of the venues.

Abstract:Football is among the world’s most popular sports. It is also one which China has sought to develop in the field of global professional sport. Nevertheless, the professionalization of football in China has not to date actually improved China’s Olympic achievement in the sport. In stark contrast to the glory of being the country that won most gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, China’s poor football performance has been troublesome for the country’s leader. In 2009, newly elected Xi Jin-Ping made a public statement about promoting elite football and expressed his personal hope that China would be capable of both qualifying for the final stages and winning the FIFA World Cup. With such concern on the part of the state leader, attention turned to football, with many private enterprises beginning to echo government policy by demonstrating a willingness to promote elite football. In addition, to accelerate football development, the Chinese Government promised to take action on the separation of government football associations. Research on this process was based on the theoretical framework of state corporatism derived from Schmitter’s work of 1974. Semi-structured interviews were conducted as the method of data collection aimed at helping us understand how Chinese Government either integrated or controlled relevant stakeholders such as NGOs and private enterprises, and further, to discuss the interactions between them.
Spatio-temporal variation and influencing factors of aero-sports tourism internet attention in Shaanxi Province, China

Abstract:Despite China's building into a leading sporting nation and sport-tourism integration high-quality development strategy in the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, existing tourism studies seldom concern sport-tourism integration, especially their spatial hot spots and evolutional trend based on geospatial big data. This study aims to probe into the spatiality and the underlying mechanism of sport tourism through internet attention data in 2015, 2018, and 2021 by social network analysis, with a specific focus on aero-sports tourism. Shaanxi Province is chosen as the study site given its advantages of rich aero-sports tourism resources and various aero-sports modes (e.g., sky diving, paragliding, etc.). The results are concluded: (1) At the provincial scale, the aero-sports tourism internet attention shows a pattern of "strong in the middle and weak in the north and south". (2) At the regional scale, the sub-group clusters within the three specific regions (Shanbei, Guanzhong, and Shannan) of Shaanxi Province turn to be inter-regional clusters. Guanzhong region, especially with Xi'an as the core, is dominant in connecting its peripheral area. Since 2016, the radiation effects of the Guanzhong Region have shown a homogeneous trend of yearly growth and effect strengthening, yet become loosely connected with a heterogeneous trend in 2021 due to the COVID-19 epidemic. (3) At the city scale, the core area of aero-sports tourism internet attention expanded from Xi'an and Xianyang to Yulin and Baoji from 2015 to 2021, resulting from urban economic strength and aviation flight camp club development. (4) The number of general aviation manufacturers, tourist attendance, and tourism revenue significantly affect aero-sports tourism internet attention.
Analysis of the overseas network communication capacity of Chinese athletes at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games

Abstract:Abstract The overseas network communication capacity of Chinese athletes at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games is an important reflection of the international influence of China’s winter sports and is of great significance. This paper uses three dimensions, presence, evaluation, and recognition, to obtain information about Chinese athletes who won medals during the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games on six platforms: Google, Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube for international overseas communication capacity analysis. It turns out that the overseas communication capacity of Chinese athletes at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games is positively correlated with the athletes’ achievements. The better the athlete performs, the higher their overseas communication capacity index ranks. Moreover, the higher rank and more medals the athlete won, the higher his or her communication capacity index ranks. The overseas communication capacity index of athlete Eileen Gu is far ahead of others, indicating a significant head effect; there are differences between the communication capacity indices of Chinese athletes on different platforms, especially on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram; meanwhile, the communication capacities of Chinese athletes on Twitter are generally weak. The construction of the overseas communication capacity of Chinese athletes at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games still needs to be strengthened.

Home Nation First, but to What Degree?: Nationalism in Chinese Central Television’s Broadcasts of the 2018 Winter Olympics

Abstract:The aim of this study was to analyze China Central Television’s (CCTV) broadcasts of the 2018 Winter Olympics and how their various narratives presented home and foreign athletes. The findings indicate that CCTV devoted more name mentions to home athletes even though their medal achievements were inferior to foreign athletes and that home athletes held at least 40% of the top 10 mentions in the three examined sports. In terms of word-by-word descriptors, broadcasters were more likely to attribute the success of Chinese athletes to subjective factors (e.g., concentration, composure, commitment, and intelligence) and to attribute the success of non-Chinese athletes to objective factors (e.g., experience). Moreover, the network tended to attribute the failure of Chinese athletes to strength, experience, and consonance and to attribute the failure of non-Chinese athletes to lack of athletic skill. Theoretical and practical implications are both discussed.
