Abstract:Classical biological control, the introduction of natural enemies to new environments to control unwanted pests or weeds, is, despite numerous successful examples, associated with rising concerns about unwanted environmental impacts such as population decline of nontarget species. Recognition of these biosafety risks is globally increasing, and prerelease assessments of biological control agents (BCAs) have become more rigorous in many countries. We review the current approaches to risk assessment for BCAs as used in Australasia, Europe, and North America. Traditionally, these assessments focus on providing assurance about the specificity of a proposed BCA, generally via a list of suitable versus nonsuitable hosts determined through laboratory specificity tests (i.e., by determining the BCA's physiological host range). The outcome of interactions of proposed agents in the natural environment can differ from laboratory-based predictions. Potential nontarget host testing may be incomplete, additional ecological barriers under field conditions may limit encounters between BCA and nontargets or reduce attack levels, and BCAs could disperse to habitats beyond those used by the target species and adversely affect nontarget species. We advocate for the adoption of more comprehensive, ecologically-based, probabilistic risk assessment approaches to BCA introductions. An example is provided using a Bayesian network that can integrate information on probabilities and uncertainties of a BCA to spread and establish in new habitats, interact with nontarget species in these habitats, and eventually negatively impact the populations of these nontarget species. Our new model, Biocontrol Adverse Impact Probability Assessment, aims to be incorporated into a structured decision-making framework to support national regulatory authorities.

Abstract:Microtubule assembly is required for the formation of the male and female pronuclei during mouse, but not sea urchin, fertilization. In mouse oocytes, 50 microM colcemid prevents the decondensation of the maternal meiotic chromosomes and of the incorporated sperm nucleus during in vitro fertilization. Nuclear lamins do not associate with either of the parental chromatin sets although peripherin, the Pl nuclear peripheral antigen, appears on both. DNA synthesis does not occur in these fertilized, colcemid-arrested oocytes. This effect is limited to the first hours after ovulation, since colcemid added 4-6 hours later no longer prevents pronuclear development, lamin acquisition, or DNA synthesis. Neither microtubule stabilization with 10 microM taxol nor microfilament inhibition with 10 microM cytochalasin D or 2.2 micrograms/ml latrunculin A prevent these pronuclear events; these drugs will inhibit the apposition of the pronuclei at the egg center. In sea urchin eggs, colcemid or griseofulvin treatment does not result in the same effect and the male pronucleus forms with the attendant accumulation of the nuclear lamins. The differences in the requirement for microtubule assembly during pronucleus formation may be related to the cell cycle: In mice the sperm enters a meiotic cytoplasm, whereas in sea urchin eggs it enters an interphase cytoplasm. Refertilization of mitotic sea urchin eggs was performed to test the possibility that this phenomenon is related to whether the sperm enters a meiotic/mitotic cytoplasm or one at interphase; during refertilization at first mitosis, the incorporated sperm nucleus is unable to decondense and acquire lamins. These results indicate a requirement for microtubule assembly for the progression from meiosis to first interphase during mouse fertilization and suggest that the cytoskeleton is required for changes in nuclear architecture necessary during fertilization and the cell cycle.
Cost‐effective portfolio allocation across quarantine, surveillance and eradication using info‐gap theory

Abstract:Portfolio allocation options developed in this research provide decision makers with a way to manage the invasive species spatially, cost‐effectively and confidently by allocating the total management budget in a robust manner. The methods outlined in this research can not only be applied to invasive species, but also the conservation of endangered species that are constrained by severe uncertainty in ecological modelling and limited resources. Biosecurity activities primarily include pre‐border and border quarantine, post‐border surveillance and post‐border eradication. Budget allocated to quarantine and surveillance activities ultimately influence the expenditure and success rate of eradication campaigns. Optimal portfolio allocation examined in previous research is susceptible to potential severe uncertainties existing in ecology and in the behaviour of invasive species itself. These uncertainties, together with a limited budget, make it difficult for decision makers to allocate the total management budget to each biosecurity activity in a robust manner. Info‐gap decision theory is applied to model the severe uncertainty in invasive species management, and robust optimize the total management cost. This research shows that using a combination of pre‐border and border quarantine (to reduce the incursion probability) and post‐border surveillance (to enable early detection and rapid response), enables decision makers to be more robust to potential uncertainty. Further, it is reported that investment in quarantine that is more cost‐effective should outweigh that in surveillance, in line with precautionary principle. Increasing the estimated population threshold for surveillance detection also gains more robustness. Synthesis and applications: Portfolio allocation options developed in this research provide decision makers with a way to manage the invasive species spatially, cost‐effectively and confidently by allocating the total management budget in a robust manner. Identifying Pareto‐efficient eradication strategies for invasive populations

Abstract:Invasive species are a major cause of biodiversity loss and are notoriously expensive and challenging to manage. We developed a decision‐analytic framework for evaluating invasive species removal strategies, given objectives of maximizing eradication probability and minimizing costs. The framework uses an existing estimation model for spatially referenced removal data—one of the most accessible types of invasive species data—to obtain estimates of population growth rate, movement probability, and detection probability. We use these estimates in simulations to identify Pareto‐efficient strategies—strategies where increases in eradication probability cannot be obtained without increases in cost—from a set of proposed strategies. We applied the framework post hoc to a successful eradication of veiled chameleons (Chamaeleo calyptratus) and identified the potential for substantial improvements in efficiency. Our approach provides managers and policymakers with tools to identify cost‐effective strategies for a range of invasive species using only prior knowledge or data from initial physical removals.

Use of Bayesian Belief Network techniques to explore the interaction of biosecurity practices on the probability of porcine disease occurrence in Canada

Abstract:Identification and quantification of pathogen threats need to be a priority for the Canadian swine industry so that resources can be focused where they will be most effective. Here we create a tool based on a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) to model the interaction between biosecurity practices and the probability of occurrence of four different diseases on Canadian swine farms. The benefits of using this novel approach, in comparison to other methods, is that it enables us to explore both the complex interaction and the relative importance of biosecurity practices on the probability of disease occurrence. In order to build the BBN we used two datasets. The first dataset detailed biosecurity practices employed on 218 commercial swine farms across Canada in 2010. The second dataset detailed animal health status and disease occurrence on 90 of those farms between 2010 and 2012. We used expert judgement to identify 15 biosecurity practices that were considered the most important in mitigating disease occurrence on farms. These included: proximity to other livestock holdings, the health status of purchased stock, manure disposal methods, as well as the procedures for admitting vehicles and staff. Four diseases were included in the BBN: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), (a prevalent endemic aerosol pathogen), Swine influenza (SI) (a viral respiratory aerosol pathogen), Mycoplasma pneumonia (MP) (an endemic respiratory disease spread by close contact and aerosol) and Swine dysentery (SD) (an enteric disease which is re-emerging in North America). This model indicated that the probability of disease occurrence was influenced by a number of manageable biosecurity practices. Increased probability of PRRS and of MP were associated with spilt feed (feed that did not fall directly in a feeding trough), not being disposed of immediately and with manure being brought onto the farm premises and spread on land adjacent to the pigs. Increased probabilities of SI and SD were associated with the farm allowing access to visiting vehicles without cleaning or disinfection. SD was also more likely to occur when the health status of purchased stock was not known. Finally, we discuss how such a model can be used by the Canadian swine industry to quantify disease risks and to determine practices that may reduce the probability of disease occurrence.

Abstract:Biological pest control is increasingly used in agriculture as an alternative to traditional chemical pest control. In many cases, this involves a one-off or periodic release of naturally occurring and/or genetically modified enemies such as predators, parasitoids, or pathogens. As the interaction between these enemies and the pest is complex and the production of natural enemies potentially expensive, it is not surprising that both the efficacy and economic viability of biological pest control are debated. Here, we investigate the performance of very simple control strategies. In particular, we show how Pareto-efficient one-off or periodic release strategies, that optimally trade off between efficacy and economic viability, can be devised and used to enable high efficacy at small economic costs. We demonstrate our method on a pest–pathogen–crop model with a tunable immigration rate of pests. By analyzing this model, we demonstrate that simple Pareto-efficient one-off and periodic release strategies are efficacious and simultaneously have profits that are close to the theoretical maximum obtained by strategies optimizing only the profit. When the immigration rate of pests is low to intermediate, one-off control strategies are sufficient, and when the immigration of pests is high, periodic release strategies are preferable. The methods presented here can be extended to more complex scenarios and be used to identify promising biological pest control strategies in many circumstances.

Info-gap theory and robust design of surveillance for invasive species: the case study of Barrow Island

Abstract:Surveillance for invasive non-indigenous species (NIS) is an integral part of a quarantine system. Estimating the efficiency of a surveillance strategy relies on many uncertain parameters estimated by experts, such as the efficiency of its components in face of the specific NIS, the ability of the NIS to inhabit different environments, and so on. Due to the importance of detecting an invasive NIS within a critical period of time, it is crucial that these uncertainties be accounted for in the design of the surveillance system. We formulate a detection model that takes into account, in addition to structured sampling for incursive NIS, incidental detection by untrained workers. We use info-gap theory for satisficing (not minimizing) the probability of detection, while at the same time maximizing the robustness to uncertainty. We demonstrate the trade-off between robustness to uncertainty, and an increase in the required probability of detection. An empirical example based on the detection of Pheidole megacephala on Barrow Island demonstrates the use of info-gap analysis to select a surveillance strategy.
Optimal allocation of resources among general and species‐specific tools for plant pest biosecurity surveillance

Abstract:This paper proposes a surveillance model for plant pests that can optimally allocate resources among survey tools with varying properties. While some survey tools are highly specific for the detection of a single pest species, others are more generalized. There is considerable variation in the cost and sensitivity of these tools, but there are no guidelines or frameworks for identifying which tools are most cost‐effective when used in surveillance programs that target the detection of newly invaded populations. To address this gap, we applied our model to design a trapping surveillance program in New Zealand for bark‐ and wood‐boring insects, some of the most serious forest pests worldwide. Our findings show that exclusively utilizing generalized traps (GTs) proves to be highly cost‐effective across a wide range of scenarios, particularly when they are capable of capturing all pest species. Implementing surveillance programs that only employ specialized traps (ST) is cost‐effective only when these traps can detect highly damaging pests. However, even in such cases, they significantly lag in cost‐effectiveness compared to GT‐only programs due to their restricted coverage. When both GTs and STs are used in an integrated surveillance program, the total expected cost (TEC) generally diminishes when compared to programs relying on a single type of trap. However, this relative reduction in TEC is only marginally larger than that achieved with GT‐only programs, as long as highly damaging species can be detected by GTs. The proportion of STs among the optimal required traps fluctuates based on several factors, including the relative pricing of GTs and STs, pest arrival rates, potential damage, and, more prominently, the coverage capacity of GTs. Our analysis suggests that deploying GTs extensively across landscapes appears to be more cost‐effective in areas with either very high or very low levels of relative risk density, potential damage, and arrival rate. Finally, STs are less likely to be required when the pests that are detected by those tools have a higher likelihood of successful eradication because delaying detection becomes less costly for these species.

Abstract:We investigate a mathematical model in crop pest management, considering plant biomass, pest, and the effect of farming awareness. The pest population is divided into two compartments: susceptible pest and infected pest. We assume that the growth rate of self-aware people is proportional to the density of healthy pests present in the crop field. Impacts of awareness is modeled via a saturated term. It is further assumed that self-aware people will adopt biological control methods, namely integrated pest management. Susceptible pests are detrimental to crops and, moreover, there may be some time delay in measuring the healthy pests in the crop field. A time delay may also take place while becoming aware of the control strategies or taking necessary steps to control the pest attack. In agreement, we develop our model incorporating two time delays into the system. The existence and the stability criteria of the equilibria are obtained in terms of the basic reproduction number and time delays. Stability switches occur through Hopf-bifurcation when time delays cross critical values. Optimal control theory has been applied for the cost-effectiveness of the delayed system. Numerical simulations illustrate the obtained analytical results.
Retrospective analysis of a classical biological control programme

Abstract:Classical biological control has been a key technology in the management of invasive arthropod pests globally for over 120 years, yet rigorous quantitative evaluations of programme success or failure are rare. Here, I used life table and matrix model analyses, and life table response experiments to quantitatively assess a classical biological control programme for an invasive insect pest in the western United States. Life tables and matrix models were developed for populations of Bemisia tabaci (sweetpotato whitefly) on cotton in Arizona before (1997–1999) and after (2001–2010) the permanent establishment of two exotic aphelinid parasitoids. Analyses tested multiple hypotheses relative to the expected outcome of a successful programme. Marginal rates of parasitism, rates of irreplaceable mortality from parasitism, total generational mortality and finite population growth (λ) were unchanged for B. tabaci populations before and after exotic parasitoid establishment. Prospective analyses showed that predation during the final nymphal stadium had the greatest influence on population growth rates regardless of parasitoid establishment. Retrospective LTREs showed that predation and unknown mortality contributed most to changes in λ after parasitoid establishment. Marginal parasitism acted weakly in a direct density dependence fashion after parasitoid establishment, and for all 14 years combined. However, this did not translate into an association between pest population density and marginal rates of parasitism for the 10‐year period following establishment. Synthesis and applications. Rarely are classical biological control programme outcomes assessed rigorously. Abstract:The present study examines the association between the self-concept and adaptation to conjugal loss; the primary aim was to explore whether those individuals high in self-esteem, environmental mastery, and optimism have more adaptive resources with which to ameliorate the detrimental sequelae of bereavement. Analyses were conducted on data collected from 58 widows every four months over a two-year period. One goal of the research was to explore the adequacy of the theoretically chosen operational definition of the self-concept; another goal was to analyze how changes in the level of self-concept components correlated with changes in levels of depression, health, and grief resolution as individuals adjusted to their losses. Analyses revealed that trajectories of depression and grief resolution were more highly related than health to changes in self-concept.
Efficient border biosecurity inspection leverages superspreading to reduce biological invasion risk

Abstract:Biological invasions are a growing threat to biodiversity, food security, and economies. Rising pressure from increased global trade requires improving border inspection efficiency. Here, we depart from the conventional consignment‐by‐consignment approach advocated in current inspection standards. Instead, we suggest a broader perspective: evaluating border inspection regimes based on their ability to reduce propagule pressure across entire pathways. Additionally, we demonstrate that most biosecurity pathways exhibit superspreading behavior, that is, consignments from the same pathway have varying infestation rates and contain rare right‐tail events (also called overdispersion). We show that greater overdispersion leads to more pronounced diminishing returns, with consequences on the optimal allocation of sampling effort. We leverage these two insights to develop a simple and efficient border inspection regime that can significantly reduce propagule pressure compared to current standards. Our analysis revealed that consignment size is a key driver of biosecurity risk and that sampling proportional to the square root of consignment size is near optimal. In testing, our framework reduced propagule pressure by 31 to 38% compared to current standards. We also identified opportunities to further improve inspection efficiency by considering additional pathway characteristics (i.e., overdispersion parameters, zero inflation, relative risk, sampling cost, detectability) and developed solutions for these more complex scenarios. We anticipate our result will mitigate biological invasion risk with significant implications for biodiversity conservation, food security, and economies worldwide.

Weakest-link control of invasive species: Impacts of memory, bounded rationality and network structure in repeated cooperative games

Abstract:The nature of dispersal of many invasive pests and pathogens in agricultural and forestry makes it necessary to consider how the actions of one manager affect neighbouring properties. In addition to the direct effects of a potential spread of a pest and the resulting economic loss, there are also indirect consequences that affect whole regions and that require coordinated actions to manage and/or to eradicate it (like movement restrictions). In this paper we address the emergence and stability of cooperation among agents who respond to a threat of an invasive pest or disease. The model, based on the weakest-link paradigm, uses repeated multi-participant coordination games where players' pay-offs depend on management decisions to prevent the invasion on their own land as well as of their neighbours on a network. We show that for the basic cooperation game agents select the risk-dominant strategy of a Stag hunt game over the pay-off dominant strategy of implementing control measures. However, cooperation can be achieved by the social planner offering a biosecurity payment. The critical level of this payment depends on the details of the decision-making process, with higher trust (based on a reputation of other agents reflecting their past performance) allowing a significant reduction in necessary payments and slowing down decay in cooperation when the payment is low. We also find that allowing for uncertainty in decision-making process can enhance cooperation for low levels of payments. Finally, we show the importance of industry structure to the emergence of cooperation, with increase in the average coordination number of network nodes leading to increase in the critical biosecurity payment.

Abstract:Wildlife disease surveillance programs and research studies track infection and identify risk factors for wild populations, humans and agriculture. Often, several types of samples are collected from individuals to provide more complete information about an animal's infection history. Methods that jointly analyse multiple data streams to study disease emergence and drivers of infection via epidemiological process models remain underdeveloped. Joint‐analysis methods can more thoroughly analyse all available data, more precisely quantifying epidemic processes, outbreak status, and risks. We contribute a paired data modelling approach that analyses multiple samples from individuals. We use 'characterization maps' to link paired data to epidemiological processes through a hierarchical statistical observation model. Our approach can provide both Bayesian and frequentist estimates of epidemiological parameters and state. Our approach can also incorporate test sensitivity and specificity, and we propose model fit diagnostics. We motivate our approach through the need to use paired pathogen and antibody detection tests to estimate parameters and infection trajectories for the widely applicable susceptible, infectious, recovered (SIR) model. We contribute general formulas to link characterization maps to arbitrary process models and datasets and an extended SIR model that better accommodates paired data. We find via simulation that paired data can more efficiently estimate SIR parameters than unpaired data, requiring samples from 5 to 10 times fewer individuals. We use our method to study SARS‐CoV‐2 in wild white‐tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from three counties in the United States. Estimates for average infectious times corroborate captive animal studies. The estimated average cumulative proportion of infected deer across the three counties is 73%, and the basic reproductive number (R0) is 1.88. Wildlife disease surveillance programs and research studies can use our methods to jointly analyse paired data to estimate epidemiological process parameters and track outbreaks. Paired data analyses can improve precision and accuracy when sampling is limited. Our methods use general statistical theory to let applications extend beyond the SIR model we consider and to more complicated examples of paired data. The methods can also be embedded in larger hierarchical models to provide landscape‐scale risk assessment and identify drivers of infection.

Optimal Control Approach for Implementation of Sterile Insect Techniques

Abstract:Vector or pest control is essential to reduce the risk of vector-borne diseases or crop losses. Among the available biological control tools, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is one of the most promising. However, SIT-control campaigns must be carefully planned in advance in order to render desirable outcomes. In this paper, we design SIT-control intervention programs that can avoid the real-time monitoring of the wild population and require to mass-rear a minimal overall number of sterile insects, in order to induce a local elimination of the wild population in the shortest time. Continuous-time release programs are obtained by applying an optimal control approach, and then laying the groundwork of more practical SIT-control programs consisting of periodic impulsive releases.

Abstract:Adopting resilience thinking into biosecurity risk management has the potential to reduce the damages caused by invading pests and diseases. If resilience thinking is used alongside traditional risk analysis, then regulators can more effectively address and prepare for the systemic consequences of high‐impact incursions and outbreaks of pests and diseases, which are unpredictable, low‐probability events. However, the design of resilience‐enhancing measures should be guided by economic principles and consider the rate of return of these measures over time. Resilient systems can absorb and recover from disturbances and adapt to changed conditions to maintain system functionality. Uncertainty about the meaning of resilience and the attributes it requires has limited the application of resilience thinking in biosecurity. However, considering increasing pressures from trade, travel and climate change, enhancing the resilience of biosecurity systems is likely to be critical to reduce the impacts of pests and diseases on economies, societies and environments. Here we provide a pathway for resilience thinking into risk management. Based on a literature review we discuss its benefits, develop an operational definition of resilience for biosecurity systems and identify the fundamental attributes that support resilience. We show that resilient biosecurity systems can anticipate disturbances, cope with low‐probability high‐impact events and adapt to new and changing circumstances. The status of biosecurity system resilience can be measured using evaluative rubrics, which give decision‐makers an overall performance rating and insight into system weaknesses. General measures, objective functions and simulation approaches are potential avenues for quantifying biosecurity system resilience in practice. Abstract:Maps of the distribution of medically-important ticks throughout the US remain lacking in spatial and temporal resolution in many areas, leading to holes in our understanding of where and when people are at risk of tick encounters, an important baseline for informing public health response. In this work, we demonstrate the use of Bayesian Experimental Design (BED) in planning spatiotemporal surveillance of disease vectors. We frame survey planning as an optimization problem with the objective of identifying a calendar of sampling locations that maximizes the expected information regarding some goal. Here we consider the goals of understanding associations between environmental factors and tick presence and minimizing uncertainty in high risk areas. We illustrate our proposed BED workflow using an ongoing tick surveillance study in South Carolina parks. Following a model comparison study based on two years of initial data, several techniques for finding optimal surveys were compared to random sampling. Two optimization algorithms found surveys better than all replications of random sampling, while a space-filling heuristic performed favorably as well. Further, optimal surveys of just 20 visits were more effective than repeating the schedule of 111 visits used in 2021. We conclude that BED shows promise as a flexible and rigorous means of survey design for vector control, and could help alleviate pressure on local agencies by limiting the resources necessary for accurate information on arthropod distributions. We have made the code for our BED workflow publicly available on Zenodo to help promote the application of these methods to future surveillance efforts.

Abstract:Globally, research and policy groups often lack the expertise to develop appropriate models to analyze agroecological and invasive species problems holistically to inform management and quarantine policy development under extant and climate change over wide geographic landscapes. Off-the-shelf species distribution models (SDM) correlate weather and other variables to records of species presence and have become the mainstay for predicting the geographic distribution and favorability of invasive species ( ). However, SDM analyses lack the capacity to examine the underpinning dynamics of agroecosystems required to inform policy and develop management strategies. We propose that age-structured physiologically based demographic models (PBDMs) can solve important aspects of this challenge as they can be used to examine prospectively species dynamics locally as well as their potential geographic distribution and relative abundance across vast areas independent of presence records. PBDMs fall under the ambit of time-varying life tables (TVLTs; cf. ) and capture the weather driven biology, dynamics, and interactions of species, and can be used to examine the system from the perspective of any of the interacting species. Here, we use the PBDM structure to examine the dynamics across Africa of thirteen invasive species from various taxa having diverse biology and trophic interactions (see , ). PBDMs are perceived to be difficult to develop, hence the is to show this is not the case and illustrate their utility invasive and endemic agricultural and medical/veterinary pest species at the local and the large geographic scale of Africa. We note that PBDMs provide a structure for continued model improvements. The development of open access software is proposed to facilitate PBDM development by non-experts emphasizing the crucial role of sound biological data on species responses to weather and to other species in a multi-trophic, interactions, and provide a guide for collecting the appropriate biological data. While the emphasis is on plant/arthropod interactions, models of diseases can be accommodated. The Supplemental Materials summarizes a large array of heritage PBDMs reported in the literature based on the methods outline herein, noting that the same model structure can be used to analyze and manage non pest species.

Abstract:Assessing the economics of biological controls in pest and invasive species control is pivotal for guiding research and decision making. The field of economics provides numerous systematic methods to assess the impacts and values created by biocontrol programs, as well as weigh the trade-offs of allocating resources to research, development, and management activities. This article discusses economic methods used to evaluate the impacts and quantify the net benefits of biological control programs, including data needs and shortcomings of methodologies. We cite examples from the literature on the economics of biological control to provide insight into the various ways in which economics contributes to the design, evaluation, and development of recommendations for biological control programs. We then discuss general trends and highlight knowledge gaps, providing suggestions for enhancing the use of economics in the analysis of biological control programs in the existing literature. This article is intended to serve as resource for researchers and policymakers interested in assessing benefits and trade-offs of biological control programs through the lens of economics.

Mathematical Methodology for Dynamic Models of Insecticide Selection Assuming a Polygenic Basis of Resistance

Abstract:Mathematical models for evaluating insecticide resistance management (IRM) have primarily assumed insecticide resistance (IR) is monogenic. Modelling using a quantitative genetics framework to model polygenic IR has less frequently been used. We introduce a complex mathematical model for polygenic IR with a focus on public health insecticide deployments for vector control. Conventional polygenic models assume selection differentials are constant over the course of selection. We instead propose calculating the selection differentials dynamically depending on the level of IR and the amount of insecticide encountered. Dynamically calculating the selection differentials increases biological and operational realism, allowing for the evaluation of strategies of policy relevance, including reduced dose mixtures or the deployment of long-lasting insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying in combination. The dynamic calculations of insecticide selection allow for two methods: 1) Truncation (“polytruncate”) – where only the most resistant individuals in the population survive, and 2) Probabilistic (“polysmooth”) – where an individual’s survival probability is dependent on their own level of IR. We describe in detail the calculation and calibration of these models. The models (“polytruncate” and “polysmooth”) are compared against a previous polygenic model (“polyres”) and the monogenic literature for the IRM strategies of rotations, sequences and full-dose mixtures. We demonstrate consistency in results of full-dose mixtures remaining the best IRM strategy, with sequences and rotations being similar in their efficacy between the two selection processes, and consistency in “global conclusions” with previous models. Consistency between the “polysmooth”, “polytruncate” and previous models helps provide confidence in their predictions, as operational interpretations are not overly impacted by model assumptions. This increases confidence in the application of these dynamic models to investigate more complex IRM strategies and scenarios, and their future applications will investigate more scenario specific evaluations of IRM strategies.
