Abstract:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN − ), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN − over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 μM ( R 2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 μM. The linear detection of CN − over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 μM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry ( R 2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1 H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN − ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.

Abstract:A newly developed diindolium moiety has been synthesized and structurally investigated by employing a number of spectroscopic methods like NMR and HRMS in order to serve as a cyanide sensor DI . The interaction between DI and the CN − ion causes a noticeable color shift from pink to colorless, making it easy to detect CN − ions with the naked eye. Besides, the sensor exhibited fluorescence color change from orange to light blue under UV lamp. Sensor DI has remarkable selectivity and sensitivity in distinguishing between CN − and a wide range of interfering anions. The sensing mechanism of sensor DI towards CN − ion involves the nucleophilic addition process of CN − to the electron deficient indolium moiety. The detection limit of cyanide ion by sensor DI is calculated to be 1.4 × 10 − 7 M by UV-visible and 8.2 × 10 − 8 M by fluorescence technique which are lower than the limit set by WHO. The application of sensor DI for cyanide ion is utilized by making test kit and by taking different sources of water to test the presence of cyanide ion.

Abstract:Designing fluorescent sensors for selective detection of CN− in aqueous and even solid states are still rarely reported due to the aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect. In this paper, we report a novel fluorescent probe C-1. Due to the AIE effect, C-1 displayed obvious orange-red fluorescence with emission peak centered at 597nm in aqueous solution and solid state. Under the influence of electron withdrawing cyano and ester groups, the vinyl C=C bond was easy to be attacked by nucleophilic CN−, which destroyed the conjugated bridge and also blocked the ICT process between the donor and the acceptor. The emission band shifted from 597 nm to 475 nm consequently. Other anions have no effect on the fluorescence of C-1. Thus, C-1 could be used as a selective CN− sensor. The UV-visible and fluorescent measurement confirmed the interactions between C-1 and CN−. 1H NMR titration method further demonstrated the detection mechanism. The sensitivity and detection limit of C-1 were measured to be 5.97 × 104 M−1 and 1.2 μM respectively. Due to the solid-state emission nature, C-1 immersed test strip was prepared and used as an effective test kit to detect CN¯ ion.

Abstract:Purpose A highly selective cyanide phenoxazine-based fluorescence chemosensor POH was created to detect cyanide (CN) ions. Design/methodology/approach A malonitrile was added to a phenoxazine fluorophore to make this widely available chemosensor. By fluorescence spectroscopy, the sensor POH showed turn-off fluorescence emission for CN with 2:1 binding stoichiometry in CH 3 CN/H 2 O (90:10 v/v) medium. Findings The detection limits for CN were 9.8 × 10 −9 M, which were much lower than WHO standards. NMR and FT-IR investigations backed up the suggested sensor POH mechanism. Originality/value The detection CN method should be applicable in a number of situations, where the CN anion for fresh water and drinking water has to be quickly and accurately analyzed. Abstract:Cyanide (CN−) is one of the most hazardous ions to humans and the environment. Therefore, sensitive, and selective sensors for CN− monitoring are highly required. A novel chemosensor based on naphthalene flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole dye (TBC-DPPN) is synthesized for the direct detection of CN− in water samples by naked eye and vibrational spectroscopy (UV–Vis and fluorescence). The electron deficient carbonyl group of the lactam ring of TBC-DPPN undergoes a nucleophilic attack by the CN− thus causing the yellow color of the dye turn to colorless, and fluorescence of the dye at 527 nm to turn-off. The mechanism of CN− sensing by the TBC-DPPN sensor is confirmed by spectral measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The TBC-DPPN sensor is utilized to determine the CN− by colorimetric and fluorescence methods in water down to 0.5 and 0.05 µm, respectively, which is well below the cut off limit of 1.9 µm that is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, TBC-DPPN can act as dual channel sensor with high selectivity and sensitivity for the determination of CN− in water.

Abstract:As cyanide is a huge hazard to the environment and human health, the study of the method of detecting low concentrations of cyanide is of great significance. In general, materials with strong positive electrostatic properties can use electrostatic attraction to enrich anions in the water near the materials, then realize rapid detection of low concentration anions by fluorescent probes . In this paper, fluorescent probes PI-S, PI-I and PI-N with cyanide-specific recognition and different charges were synthesized to study the relationship between the charge effect of probes and the sensing sensitivity. Through the zeta potential test and the calculation of the surface electrostatic potential, the positive electricity of PI-S, PI-I and PI-N gradually increased, the ΔG < 0 of the adsorption process gradually decreased, CN – could be aggregated to the vicinity of probes. As a result, the detection limit of the probe was gradually reduced from 1.07 × 10 −6 to 5.03 × 10 −8 M, the sensitivity was significantly enhanced. Therefore, this is expected to be a new strategy to improve the sensitivity of anion probes by increasing the positive electricity of molecules. In addition, PI-N has good anti-interference ability, short response time and certain application value in cell imaging and identification of endogenous cyanide in food.

Abstract:Hazardous cyanide anions (CN-) are increasingly threatening the environment and human health due to their widespread use in industry and many other fields. Over the past three decades, a large number of probes have been reported to sensitively and selectively detect this toxic anion, while a rather limited number of ratiometric fluorescent probes have been developed. The ratiometric probes have significant potential in bio-imaging and biomedical applications because of the ability to detect CN- in a quick, convenient and affordable way. In this review, we introduce 42 ratiometric fluorescent probes reported in the past 6 years (2018-2023) for CN- detection. Our description includes the chemical structures, photo-physical properties, CN- sensing mechanisms, solution color changes, limits of detection (LODs) and/or various applications of these chemical probes. This review provides guidelines for design and development of a new ratiometric probe for effective CN- detection.

Abstract:We report a novel and environmentally friendly fluorescent probe for detecting the cyanide ion (CN(-)) using L-amino acid oxidase (LAAOx)-protected Au nanoclusters (LAAOx@AuNCs) with red emission. The fluorescence-based sensing behaviour of LAAOx@AuNCs towards anions was investigated in buffered aqueous media. Among the anions studied, CN(-) was found to effectively quench the fluorescence emission of AuNCs based on CN(-) induced Au core decomposition. Excellent sensitivity and selectivity toward the detection of CN(-) in aqueous solution were observed. The CN(-) detection limit was determined to be approximately 180 nM, which is 15 times lower than the maximum level (2700 nM) of CN(-) in drinking water permitted by the World Health Organization (WHO). A linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and CN(-) concentration was observed in two ranges of CN(-) concentration, including 3.2 × 10(-6) to 3.4 × 10(-5) mol L(-1) and 3.81 × 10(-5) to 1.04 × 10(-4) mol L(-1). The high sensitivity and selectivity to CN(-) among the 17 types of anions make the AuNCs good candidates for use in fluorescent nanoprobes of CN(-).
Ratiometric detection and monitoring of cyanide in biological, environmental and food samples by a novel triphenylamine-xhantane based fluorescent probe

Abstract:Background: As cyanide (CN-) is a significant hazard to the environment and human health, it is essential to monitor cyanide levels in water and food samples. Moreover, real-time visualization of CN-could provide an additional understanding of its critical physiological and toxicological roles in living cells. The fluorescence approach based on small organic probes is an effective way for the detection of CN-. In this approach, a triphenylamine-xhantane conjugate was applied to detect in many samples such as sewage water, soil, sprouted potato, apricot seed, and living cells. Results: We report a new ratiometric near-infrared fluorescent probe based on a triphenylamine-xhantane derivative for CN-sensing in many samples. The probe displays high selectivity for only CN- ions among a series of analytes. The addition of cyanide to the dicyanovinyl moiety of the probe disrupts π-conjugation followed by the interruption of internal charge transfer. Consequently, the emission peak of the probe shifts hypsochromically from 655 to 495 nm. There is a linear correlation between the emission intensity (I495) and cyanide level, with a detection limit of 0.036 μM. The probe has many advantages over many probes, such as NIR fluorescence, ratiometric response, low cytotoxicity (85.0 % cell viability up to 50.0 μM of the probe), good membrane permeability, fast response time (4.0 min), high selectivity, good photostability, and anti-interference capability. Significance: Although various probes have been reported in the literature, the use of triphenylamine-xhantane unit as CN- probe has yet to be explored. The probe can detect trace levels of cyanide in many samples such as sewage water, soil, sprouted potatoes, and apricot seeds. Furthermore, it is successfully utilized for the ratiometric fluorescent bioimaging of cyanide in living cells.

Abstract:An alkoxy-substituted 1,3-indanedione-based chemodosimeter 1 with an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic was rationally designed and synthesized for the ultrasensitive and selective sensing of cyanide in a wide pH range of 3.0–12.0. The nucleophilic addition of cyanide to the β-conjugated carbon of the 1,3-indanedione group obstructs intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and causes a significant change in the absorption and fluorescence spectra, enabling colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent detection of cyanide in a 90% aqueous solution. The cyanide-sensing mechanism is supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, and 1H NMR titration experiments. Sensor 1 exhibits strong yellow fluorescence in the solid state due to the AIE effect, and the paper probes containing 1 can be conveniently used to sense cyanide by the naked eye. Abstract:In this study, 3-ethyl-2-methylbenzothiazolium iodide and nitrophenyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde were used to synthesize a new fluorescent and chromogenic dual channel signal cyanide ion probe M, which showed high selectivity towards CN analysis and strong antijamming capability towards other anions. When CN is present in the solution, probe M indicates an obvious blue shift in UV-vis absorbance spectra, which can be observed clearly by unaided eyes. The limits of detection (LODs) of CN based on fluorescence and UV-vis absorbance were 0.11 mu M and 0.16 mu M, respectively. The mechanism of fluorescent and chromogenic cyanide ion detection refers to the nucleophilic addition of cyanide ion to carbon atom of-C-N-in the benzothiazole. The a-conjugation and ICT transition between furfural and benzothiazole were broken due to this non-reversible reaction, resulting in the color change and fluorescent characterizations. In addition, probe M also showed the excellent optical properties and high biocompatibility, which enables the practical application of CN- tracing in biomedical systems.
Multisignaling detection of cyanide anions based on an iridium(iii) complex: remarkable enhancement of sensitivity by coordination effect

Abstract:A new molecule, (Z)-4-(4-(dimethylamino)benzylidene)-3-methyl-1-(pyridin-2-yl)-1H-pyrazol-5(4H)-one (dmpp), and its novel heteroleptic iridium(III) complex, [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6, were synthesized and characterized. Both dmpp and [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6 could be used as highly selective and sensitive chemodosimeters for the cyanide anion by the naked eye, owing to the addition of the CN- to the vinyl group of dmpp. The addition of CN- to a solution of dmpp induced a change in the solution color from yellow to colorless, and to [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6 induced a change in the solution color from pink to colorless. Moreover, [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6 could also act as a phosphorescent and electrochemical probe of CN-. The green phosphorescence band at 520 nm and a new irreversible oxidation wave at 0.423 V showed up upon the addition of CN-, indicating that [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6 was an excellent multisignaling chemodosimeter of CN-. Importantly, the Ir complex-based cyanide chemodosimeter [(ppy)(2)Ir(dmpp)]PF6 has much easier and faster detection of CN than pure organic molecule dmpp.

Abstract:Cyanide is one of the highly poisonous pollutants to our environment and toxic to human health. It is important to develop the widely applicable methods for their recognition to secure safe uses for people coming into contact and handling cyanide and their derivatives. In this regard, the aggregation-induced emission materials possess high potential for the development of simple, fast, and convenient methods for cyanide detection through either "turn-off" or "turn-on". Among the AIE-based materials, tetraphenylethylene is a promising sensor for various sensing applications. In this paper, we have designed and synthesized a TPE-based chemosensor, which shows high sensitivity and displays good selectivity for cyanide (CN–) over others in the presence of interfering Cl–, I–, F–, Br–, HSO4–, H2PO4–, NO3–, HCO3–, and ClO4– anions employed. The naked-eye, UV–vis, and fluorescence methods are employed to evaluate the performance of probe 1 toward CN– detection. From these experiments, CN– ions can be detected with a limit of detection as low as 67 nM, which is comparatively lower than that of the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit of the cyanide anion, that is, 1.9 μM. From the Job's plot, the 1:1 stoichiometric complexation reaction between probe 1 and CN– was found. The probe was efficiently applied for the detection of CN– ions using a paper strip method. The probe 1 also showed the potential of detecting CN– ions in various food items and in the cell line.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Cyanide (CN−) is a highly toxic anion to human beings, exploring efficient probes for sensitive and selective detection of it is very important. In this study, we explore a simple one-pot reaction to synthesize polyethyleneimine (PEI) solubilized Au(I)-MUA (11-mercaptoundecanoic acid) complexes under mild condition. The as prepared Au(I)-MUA complexes exhibit strong red photoluminescence (PL) and can act as sensitive and selective CN− optical sensor in aqueous media based on the chemical reaction between CN− and gold atom that quench the fluorescence, and the limit of detection is 10 nM, which is ∼270 times lower than the maximum contamination level (2.7 μM) in drinking water permitted by WHO. Additionally, real water sample from a local lake is tested with these optical sensors, and the PL variation caused by 0.1 μ CN− can be observed.

Abstract:We have prepared and reported a new cyanide colorimetric and turn-on fluorescent chemo sensor L. Naked-eye colorimetric studies show the prepared receptor is selectively sensing cyanide ion in acetonitrile medium. The sensor L shows very weak fluorescence in acetonitrile medium. The emission intensity of L gets reduced (quenching of fluorescence) upon addition of one equivalent of cyanide. Meanwhile, further gradual addition of more than one equivalents of cyanide onto 1:1 cyanide complex of L shows remarkable fluorescence enhancement. We have tested the absorbance and emission intensity of cyanide ion in the presence of other interfering anions such as fluoride, chloride, bromide, iodide, acetate, dihydrogen phosphate, azide, bifluoride, thio cyanate, and nitrate. The experimental results show none of the anions interfered the binding/sensing of cyanide by receptor L which clearly depicts the selectivity of cyanide by L. The weakly emissive receptor L shows drastic enhancement in fluorescence intensity upon addition of excessive cyanide ion (CN−) which is mainly attributed due to the restriction of intramolecular rotation of 1:1 L·CN− complex and intermolecular aggregation of host:guest complex. This enhanced fluorescence emission is attributed due to the aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) subsequently supported with ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis), emission and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopic studies. The preferential binding of cyanide by electron-deficient receptor L through hydrogen bonding and anion···π interaction over benzene analogue of L is also analyzed with the help of molecular electrostatic potential surface analyses. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example for selective colorimetric and turn-on cyanide sensor through AIEE mechanism. This type of fluorine-rich organic material having such an aggregation-induced enhanced emission properties in response to cyanide addition will be useful to construct the new type of material for various sensory applications.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Copper (II) (Cu2+) and 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) are harmful substances usually found in foods. Therefore, establishing rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection method for both of these substances is significant research work. A pyrene-based fluorescent sensor (PP) was synthesized to enable highly selective and sensitive simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and 3-NPA in food samples. Initially, PP showed weak fluorescence because of the photo–induced electron transfer process (PET). Upon the presence of Cu2+, the emission of PP at 454nm enhanced owing to the coordination between PP and Cu2+ which hindered the PET. Additionally, under 365nm UV irradiation, the color of the PP solution transitions from orange to bright blue, allowing for naked-eye detection. The sensor PP demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu2+ compared to other competitive metal ions, with the detection limit was 0.036μM, within a linear range of 0–20μM. The binding stoichiometry between PP and Cu2+ is determined to be 2:1 using the Job’s plot method, with a binding constant (Ka) of 7.2 ×103M−1/2. Furthermore, at lower pH (in the range 2.55–5.98), the emission of PP was also enhanced due to the protonation of PP which suppresses the PET process. Given its sensitive and linear response to acidic pH, PP exhibits excellent sensing performance for detecting 3-NPA, with a low detection limit of 0.32μM, surpassing previously reported methods in terms of detection sensitivity.

Abstract:The development of novel fluorescent probes for real-time detection of cyanides (CN − ) in environmental and biological systems has become a significant focus in chemical sensing. Particularly, ratiometric fluorescence sensing offers a unique method for precise and quantitative detection of cyanides, even under complex conditions. We report herein the design of a new ratiometric fluorescent probe for cyanides based on modulation of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) coupled with novel cyanide-induced nucleophilic substitution of aromatic hydrogen (SNArH). The target probe ( R1 ) is developed by introducing coumarin fluorophores as FRET donors into a 3-nitro-naphthalimide acceptor, which is easily synthesized and exhibits a colorimetric change from colorless to faint yellow and a significant ratiometric fluorescence shift (Δλ = 114 nm) upon cyanide binding. A clear ratiometric signal at I 582 / I 468 was obtained, with a limit of detection of 5.69 μM. The sensing mechanism was confirmed through 1 H NMR titration and LC-MS analysis. Additionally, R1 -loaded strips were easily prepared, serving as a portable device for detecting CN − with visible color changes. The probe R1 has been successfully utilized for real-time monitoring of cyanide in food materials and water samples. Importantly, fluorescence bioimaging studies in HeLa cells were conducted, demonstrating the probe's capability for ratiometric detection of exogenous CN − in living systems.

Abstract:A novel dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran-based sensor bearing 2-thiophenecarbonyl as a masking group was established for the detection of cyanide anions. Upon the addition of cyanide, sensor 1 manifested a near-infrared emission band at 717 nm, with an extremely large red-shift (similar to 180 nm) in the absorption spectrum. It also showed an obvious color change from yellow to green. Sensor 1 was used to sensitively measure CN- with low detection limit of 1.44 mu M. The stoichiometric ratio between probe and CN- were determined as 1:1, with the association constant of 7.87 x 10(2) M-1. The reaction mechanism was investigated by ESI-MS, H-1 NMR, HPLC, and density functional theory methods. Results indicate that the nucleophilicity of the cyanide catalyzes the elimination of 2-thiophenecarbonyl, which strengthens the intramolecular charge transfer effect of the dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran fluorophore. Furthermore, sensor 1 was found to be efficient in detecting cyanide in the intracellular region of MCF-7 cells.
