Abstract:Abstract Background Walking speed and energy economy tend to decline with age. Lower-limb exoskeletons have demonstrated potential to improve either measure, but primarily in studies conducted on healthy younger adults. Promising techniques like optimization of exoskeleton assistance have yet to be tested with older populations, while speed and energy consumption have yet to be simultaneously optimized for any population. Methods We investigated the effectiveness of human-in-the-loop optimization of ankle exoskeletons with older adults. Ten healthy adults > 65 years of age (5 females; mean age: 72 ± 3 yrs) participated in approximately 240 min of training and optimization with tethered ankle exoskeletons on a self-paced treadmill. Multi-objective human-in-the-loop optimization was used to identify assistive ankle plantarflexion torque patterns that simultaneously improved self-selected walking speed and metabolic rate. The effects of optimized exoskeleton assistance were evaluated in separate trials. Results Optimized exoskeleton assistance improved walking performance for older adults. Both objectives were simultaneously improved; self-selected walking speed increased by 8% (0.10 m/s; p = 0.001) and metabolic rate decreased by 19% ( p = 0.007), resulting in a 25% decrease in energetic cost of transport ( p = 8 e -4) compared to walking with exoskeletons applying zero torque. Compared to younger participants in studies optimizing a single objective, our participants required lower exoskeleton torques, experienced smaller improvements in energy use, and required more time for motor adaptation. Conclusions Our results confirm that exoskeleton assistance can improve walking performance for older adults and show that multiple objectives can be simultaneously addressed through human-in-the-loop optimization.

Adaptive Ankle Resistance from a Wearable Robotic Device to Improve Muscle Recruitment in Cerebral Palsy

Abstract:Individuals with cerebral palsy can have weak and poorly coordinated ankle plantar flexor muscles that contribute to inefficient walking patterns. Previous studies attempting to improve plantar flexor function have had inconsistent effects on mobility, likely due to a lack of task-specificity. The goal of this study was to develop, validate, and test the feasibility and neuromuscular response of a novel wearable adaptive resistance platform to increase activity of the plantar flexors during the propulsive phase of gait. We recruited eight individuals with spastic cerebral palsy to walk with adaptive plantar flexor resistance provided from an untethered exoskeleton. The resistance system and protocol was safe and feasible for all of our participants. Controller validation demonstrated our ability to provide resistance that proportionally- and instantaneously-adapted to the biological ankle moment (R = 0.92 ± 0.04). Following acclimation to resistance (0.16 ± 0.02 Nm/kg), more-affected limbs exhibited a 45 ± 35% increase in plantar flexor activity (p = 0.02), a 26 ± 24% decrease in dorsiflexor activity (p < 0.05), and a 46 ± 25% decrease in co-contraction (tibialis anterior and soleus) (p = 0.02) during the stance phase. This adaptive resistance system warrants further investigation for use in a longitudinal intervention study.

Abstract:Transfemoral amputation is a debilitating condition that leads to long-term mobility restriction and secondary disorders that negatively affect the quality of life of millions of individuals worldwide. Currently available prostheses are not able to restore energetically efficient and functional gait, thus, recently, the alternative strategy to inject energy at the residual hip has been proposed to compensate for the lack of energy of the missing leg. Here, we show that a portable and powered hip exoskeleton assisting both the residual and intact limb induced a reduction of walking energy expenditure in four individuals with above-knee amputation. The reduction of the energy expenditure, quantified using the Physiological Cost Index, was in the range [-10, -17]% for all study participants compared to walking without assistance, and between [-2, -24]% in three out of four study participants compared to walking without the device. Additionally, all study participants were able to walk comfortably and confidently with the hip exoskeleton overground at both their self-selected comfortable and fast speed without any observable alterations in gait stability. The study findings confirm that injecting energy at the hip level is a promising approach for individuals with above-knee amputation. By reducing the energy expenditure of walking and facilitating gait, a hip exoskeleton may extend mobility and improve locomotor training of individuals with above-knee amputation, with several positive implications for their quality of life.

Design of an Ankle Exoskeleton That Recycles Energy to Assist Propulsion During Human Walking

Abstract:Objective: Active exoskeletons can handle different walking conditions, but require bulky components (e.g., motors) that need a significant source of power to do so. Purely passive exoskeletons are lightweight and energy-neutral, containing energy-recycling mechanisms that capture energy loss during negative power phases and return it as walking assistance. However, they are usually designed for stereotyped gaits (e.g., walking at fixed speed) and thus show poor adaptivity for variable conditions. This study is aimed to overcome these issues. Methods: A quasi-passive ankle exoskeleton is designed to integrate the merits of both active and passive exoskeletons, which captures the heel-strike energy loss and recycles it into propulsion. A novel, lightweight, energy-saving clutch and a heel-strike energy-storage mechanism are developed. They are coupled by a series spring that assists user's calf muscles. Six healthy subjects walked with the device on level ground and inclined surfaces to validate its functionality. Results: Level ground studies indicate that the energy-storage mechanism enhances the assistance by increasing the output torque of the exoskeleton. Reductions in metabolic cost (6.4 ± 1.3%, p < 0.05) were observed. During uphill walking, the assistance torque decreased compared with that on level ground, but it still reduced overall metabolic cost compared with baseline walking. During downhill walking, the assistance torque increased, but metabolic cost also slightly increased. Conclusion: These results demonstrate the functionality of the prototype on level ground and its limitations on inclined surfaces. Significance: The proposed device highlights the possibility of widening the potential applications of exoskeletons.

Abstract:Over the course of both evolution and development, the human musculoskeletal system has been well shaped for the cushion function of the foot during foot-strike and the impulsive function of the ankle joint during push-off. Nevertheless, an efficient energy interaction between foot structure and ankle joint is still lacking in the human body itself, which may limit the further potential of economical walking. Here we showed the metabolic expenditure of walking can be lessened by an unpowered exoskeleton robot that modulates energy among the foot-ankle complex towards a more effective direction. The unpowered exoskeleton recycles negative mechanical energy of the foot that is normally dissipated in heel-strike, retains the stored energy before mid-stance, and then transfers the energy to the ankle joint to assist the push-off. The modulation process of the exoskeleton consumes no input energy, yet reduces the metabolic cost of walking by % (mean ± s.e.m) for healthy subjects. The electromyography measurements demonstrate the activities of target ankle plantarflexors decreased significantly without added effort for the antagonistic muscle, suggesting the exoskeleton enhanced the subjects' energy efficiency of the foot-ankle complex in a natural manner. Furthermore, the exoskeleton also provides cushion assistance for walking, which leads to significantly decreased activity of the quadriceps muscle during heel-strike. Rather than strengthening the functions of existing biological structures, developing the complementary energy loop that does not exist in the human body itself also shows its potential for gait assistance.

Abstract:Introduction: Wearable exoskeletons are emerging technologies for providing movement assistance and rehabilitation for people with motor disorders. In this study, we focus on the specific gait pathology dropfoot, which is common after a stroke. Dropfoot makes it difficult to achieve foot clearance during swing and heel contact at early stance and often necessitates compensatory movements. Methods: We developed a soft ankle exoskeleton consisting of actuation and transmission systems to assist two degrees of freedom simultaneously: dorsiflexion and eversion, then performed several proof-of-concept experiments on non-disabled persons. The actuation system consists of two motors worn on a waist belt. The transmission system provides assistive force to the medial and lateral sides of the forefoot via Bowden cables. The coupling design enables variable assistance of dorsiflexion and inversion at the same time, and a force-free controller is proposed to compensate for device resistance. We first evaluated the performance of the exoskeleton in three seated movement tests: assisting dorsiflexion and eversion, controlling plantarflexion, and compensating for device resistance, then during walking tests. In all proof-of-concept experiments, dropfoot tendency was simulated by fastening a weight to the shoe over the lateral forefoot. Results: In the first two seated tests, errors between the target and the achieved ankle joint angles in two planes were low; errors of <1.5° were achieved in assisting dorsiflexion and/or controlling plantarflexion and of <1.4° in assisting ankle eversion. The force-free controller in test three significantly compensated for the device resistance during ankle joint plantarflexion. In the gait tests, the exoskeleton was able to normalize ankle joint and foot segment kinematics, specifically foot inclination angle and ankle inversion angle at initial contact and ankle angle and clearance height during swing. Discussion: Our findings support the feasibility of the new ankle exoskeleton design in assisting two degrees of freedom at the ankle simultaneously and show its potential to assist people with dropfoot and excessive inversion.

Abstract:Falls due to stumbles are a major cause of injury for many populations, and as such interventions to reduce fall risk have been a key focus of rehabilitation research. However, dedicated stumble recovery assistance in a powered lower-limb exoskeleton has yet to be explored as a fall mitigation intervention. Thus young, healthy adults () were recruited for a stumble recovery experiment to test the efficacy of knee exoskeleton stumble recovery assistance in improving an impaired stumble recovery response (i.e., the elevating strategy response). Leg weights were attached unilaterally to each participant's shank to simulate walking and stumble recovery impairment, and a unilateral powered knee exoskeleton was worn on the same leg for walking and stumble recovery assistance. Ultimately, knee exoskeleton stumble recovery assistance served to improve participants' elevating limb kinematics (i.e., increase thigh and knee motion) and reduce overall fall risk (i.e., reduce trunk motion and improve foot placement) during responses relative to their impaired response (i.e., with the leg weights and no assistance), and relative to their response while receiving only walking assistance. This initial exploration provides a first indication that knee exoskeleton stumble recovery assistance is a viable approach to improving an impaired stumble recovery response, which could serve two important use cases: (1) a safety mechanism for existing exoskeleton wearers, who may be less capable of recovering from stumbles due to the added weight or joint impedance of the device; (2) an external stumble recovery aid for fall-prone populations, such as the elderly or stroke survivors.
A State-of-the-Art of Exoskeletons in Line with the WHO's Vision on Healthy Aging: From Rehabilitation of Intrinsic Capacities to Augmentation of Functional Abilities

Abstract:The global aging population faces significant health challenges, including an increasing vulnerability to disability due to natural aging processes. Wearable lower limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have emerged as a promising solution to enhance physical function in older individuals. This systematic review synthesizes the use of LLEs in alignment with the WHO's healthy aging vision, examining their impact on intrinsic capacities and functional abilities. We conducted a comprehensive literature search in six databases, yielding 36 relevant articles covering older adults (65+) with various health conditions, including sarcopenia, stroke, Parkinson's Disease, osteoarthritis, and more. The interventions, spanning one to forty sessions, utilized a range of LLE technologies such as Ekso®, HAL®, Stride Management Assist®, Honda Walking Assist®, Lokomat®, Walkbot®, Healbot®, Keeogo Rehab®, EX1®, overground wearable exoskeletons, Eksoband®, powered ankle–foot orthoses, HAL® lumbar type, Human Body Posturizer®, Gait Enhancing and Motivation System®, soft robotic suits, and active pelvis orthoses. The findings revealed substantial positive outcomes across diverse health conditions. LLE training led to improvements in key performance indicators, such as the 10 Meter Walk Test, Five Times Sit-to-Stand test, Timed Up and Go test, and more. Additionally, enhancements were observed in gait quality, joint mobility, muscle strength, and balance. These improvements were accompanied by reductions in sedentary behavior, pain perception, muscle exertion, and metabolic cost while walking. While longer intervention durations can aid in the rehabilitation of intrinsic capacities, even the instantaneous augmentation of functional abilities can be observed in a single session. In summary, this review demonstrates consistent and significant enhancements in critical parameters across a broad spectrum of health conditions following LLE interventions in older adults. These findings underscore the potential of LLE in promoting healthy aging and enhancing the well-being of older adults.

Abstract:Ankle-based exoskeletons have demonstrated metabolic benefits during steady-state walking; however, variability exists in individual adaptation timelines necessary to achieve those benefits. This study assessed timelines for metabolic and gait-related adaptation while wearing an ankle-based exoskeleton while powered (EXOP) compared to unpowered (EXNP) and no device worn (NOEX). Metabolic (VO 2 ) and biomechanics data were collected while 14 participants walked on a treadmill at 1.3 m/s for six sessions. To better understand variability in responses to wearing exoskeletons, the cohort was divided based on the slope of the VO 2 response of the first two sessions in the EXOP condition, and gait parameters were compared between subgroups. Repeated measures analyses of variance revealed a significant ( p ≤ 0.001) 10% VO 2 reduction for EXOP compared to EXNP and a non-significant 2.5% reduction for EXOP v NOEX. Lack of significant session-based comparisons indicated no additional VO 2 adaptation; however, significant session-related results for peak knee flexion (interaction, p = 0.042) and step width (session main effect, p = 0.003) suggest gait-related adaptation continued during the sessions. Subgroup results indicated different response profiles to wearing exoskeletons; and implications of classifying initial responses based on metabolic response are discussed as an approach to understand what drives variation in responses to these devices. After initial training, VO 2 reductions were observed with an ankle-based exoskeleton during the initial session and those reductions were maintained for the remaining sessions. Some gait-related variables continued to change over the remaining sessions. Exploratory work based on differences between early metabolic responses revealed potential adaptation strategy subgroups.

Proportional Joint-Moment Control for Instantaneously Adaptive Ankle Exoskeleton Assistance

Abstract:Lower-limb exoskeletons used to improve free-living mobility for individuals with neuromuscular impairment must be controlled to prescribe assistance that adapts to the diverse locomotor conditions encountered during daily life, including walking at different speeds and across varied terrain. The goal of this paper is to design and establish clinical feasibility of an ankle exoskeleton control strategy that instantly and appropriately adjusts assistance to the changing biomechanical demand during variable walking. To accomplish this goal, we developed a proportional joint-moment control strategy that prescribes assistance as a function of the instantaneous estimate of the ankle joint moment and conducted a laboratory-based feasibility study. Four individuals with neuromotor impairment and one unimpaired individual completed exoskeleton-assisted slow and fast gait transition tasks that involved gait initiation and changing walking speed. We found that the controller was effective in instantaneously prescribing exoskeleton assistance that was proportional to the ankle moment with less than 14% root-mean-square error, on average. We also performed a three-subject pilot investigation to determine the ability of the proportional joint-moment controller to improve walking economy. Evaluated in two individuals with cerebral palsy and one unimpaired individual, metabolic cost of transport improved 17-27% during treadmill and over-ground walking with proportional control compared with wearing the exoskeleton unassisted. These preliminary findings support the continued investigation of proportional joint-moment control for assisting individuals with neuromuscular disabilities during walking in real-world settings.
Impact of elastic ankle exoskeleton stiffness on neuromechanics and energetics of human walking across multiple speeds

Abstract:Abstract Background Elastic ankle exoskeletons with intermediate stiffness springs in parallel with the human plantarflexors can reduce the metabolic cost of walking by ~ 7% at 1.25 m s − 1 . In a move toward ‘real-world’ application, we examined whether the unpowered approach has metabolic benefit across a range of walking speeds, and if so, whether the optimal exoskeleton stiffness was speed dependent. We hypothesized that, for any walking speed, there would be an optimal ankle exoskeleton stiffness - not too compliant and not too stiff - that minimizes the user’s metabolic cost. In addition, we expected the optimal stiffness to increase with walking speed. Methods Eleven participants walked on a level treadmill at 1.25, 1.50, and 1.75 m s − 1 while we used a state-of-the-art exoskeleton emulator to apply bilateral ankle exoskeleton assistance at five controlled rotational stiffnesses (k exo = 0, 50, 100, 150, 250 Nm rad − 1 ). We measured metabolic cost, lower-limb joint mechanics, and EMG of muscles crossing the ankle, knee, and hip. Results Metabolic cost was significantly reduced at the lowest exoskeleton stiffness (50 Nm rad − 1 ) for assisted walking at both 1.25 (4.2%; p = 0.0162) and 1.75 m s − 1 (4.7%; p = 0.0045). At these speeds, the metabolically optimal exoskeleton stiffness provided peak assistive torques of ~ 0.20 Nm kg − 1 that resulted in reduced biological ankle moment of ~ 12% and reduced soleus muscle activity of ~ 10%. We found no stiffness that could reduce the metabolic cost of walking at 1.5 m s − 1 . Across all speeds, the non-weighted sum of soleus and tibialis anterior activation rate explained the change in metabolic rate due to exoskeleton assistance ( p 0.56). Conclusions Elastic ankle exoskeletons with low rotational stiffness reduce users’ metabolic cost of walking at slow and fast but not intermediate walking speed. The relationship between the non-weighted sum of soleus and tibialis activation rate and metabolic cost (R 2 > 0.56) indicates that muscle activation may drive metabolic demand. Future work using simulations and ultrasound imaging will get ‘under the skin’ and examine the interaction between exoskeleton stiffness and plantarflexor muscle dynamics to better inform stiffness selection in human-machine systems.

Abstract:Stroke disease leads to a partial or complete disability affecting muscle strength and functional mobility. Early rehabilitation sessions might induce neuroplasticity and restore the affected function or structure of the patients. Robotic rehabilitation minimizes the burden on therapists by providing repetitive and regularly monitored therapies. Commercial exoskeletons have been found to assist hip and knee motion. For instance, unilateral exoskeletons have the potential to become an effective training system for patients with hemiparesis. However, these robotic devices leave the ankle joint unassisted, essential in gait for body propulsion and weight-bearing. This article evaluates the effects of the robotic ankle orthosis T-FLEX during cooperative assistance with the AGoRA unilateral lower-limb exoskeleton (hip and knee actuation). This study involves nine subjects, measuring muscle activity and gait parameters such as stance and swing times. The results showed a reduction in muscle activity in the Biceps Femoris of 50%, Lateral Gastrocnemius of 59% and Tibialis Anterior of 35% when adding T-FLEX to the AGoRA unilateral lower-limb exoskeleton. No differences were found in gait parameters. Nevertheless, stability is preserved when comparing the two legs. Future works should focus on evaluating the devices in ground tests in healthy subjects and pathological patients.
Lower limb biomechanics of fully trained exoskeleton users reveal complex mechanisms behind the reductions in energy cost with human-in-the-loop optimization

Abstract:Exoskeletons that assist in ankle plantarflexion can improve energy economy in locomotion. Characterizing the joint-level mechanisms behind these reductions in energy cost can lead to a better understanding of how people interact with these devices, as well as to improved device design and training protocols. We examined the biomechanical responses to exoskeleton assistance in exoskeleton users trained with a lengthened protocol. Kinematics at unassisted joints were generally unchanged by assistance, which has been observed in other ankle exoskeleton studies. Peak plantarflexion angle increased with plantarflexion assistance, which led to increased total and biological mechanical power despite decreases in biological joint torque and whole-body net metabolic energy cost. Ankle plantarflexor activity also decreased with assistance. Muscles that act about unassisted joints also increased activity for large levels of assistance, and this response should be investigated over long-term use to prevent overuse injuries.
Systematic review on wearable lower-limb exoskeletons for gait training in neuromuscular impairments

Abstract:Gait disorders can reduce the quality of life for people with neuromuscular impairments. Therefore, walking recovery is one of the main priorities for counteracting sedentary lifestyle, reducing secondary health conditions and restoring legged mobility. At present, wearable powered lower-limb exoskeletons are emerging as a revolutionary technology for robotic gait rehabilitation. This systematic review provides a comprehensive overview on wearable lower-limb exoskeletons for people with neuromuscular impairments, addressing the following three questions: (1) what is the current technological status of wearable lower-limb exoskeletons for gait rehabilitation?, (2) what is the methodology used in the clinical validations of wearable lower-limb exoskeletons?, and (3) what are the benefits and current evidence on clinical efficacy of wearable lower-limb exoskeletons? We analyzed 87 clinical studies focusing on both device technology (e.g., actuators, sensors, structure) and clinical aspects (e.g., training protocol, outcome measures, patient impairments), and make available the database with all the compiled information. The results of the literature survey reveal that wearable exoskeletons have potential for a number of applications including early rehabilitation, promoting physical exercise, and carrying out daily living activities both at home and the community. Likewise, wearable exoskeletons may improve mobility and independence in non-ambulatory people, and may reduce secondary health conditions related to sedentariness, with all the advantages that this entails. However, the use of this technology is still limited by heavy and bulky devices, which require supervision and the use of walking aids. In addition, evidence supporting their benefits is still limited to short-intervention trials with few participants and diversity among their clinical protocols. Wearable lower-limb exoskeletons for gait rehabilitation are still in their early stages of development and randomized control trials are needed to demonstrate their clinical efficacy.
Effects of passive ankle exoskeletons on neuromuscular function during exaggerated standing sway

Abstract:Wearable robotic exoskeletons designed to assist human movement should integrate with the neuromusculoskeletal system. This means assisting movement while not perturbing motor control. We sought to test if passive ankle exoskeletons, which have been shown to successfully assist human gait, affect neuromuscular control of an exaggerated anterior–posterior standing sway task. Participants actively swayed while wearing an ankle exoskeleton that provided 0, 42 or 85 Nm rad −1 of additional stiffness to the ankle joint in resistance to dorsiflexion. Sway amplitude was controlled via biofeedback to elicit similar ankle angle displacements across conditions. With greater exoskeleton stiffness, participants swayed at lower sway-cycle frequencies and slower centre of pressure speeds. Furthermore, increasing exoskeleton stiffness resulted in longer operating lengths of the medial gastrocnemius and overall reduced plantar flexor muscle activation. For the soleus, there was also a temporal shift in the cross-correlation of its electromyogram with the centre of pressure displacement, meaning that muscle activation peaked later than anterior sway displacement. Together, these data suggest that assistive ankle exoskeletons influence neuromuscular control of ankle-based sway tasks. Changes in fascicle lengths could influence afferent feedback signals and the short-range stiffness of ankle muscles, while shifts in muscle activation timing suggest changes in neural control. The observed neuromuscular adaptations to exoskeleton assistance demonstrate the potential implications for standing balance and overall movement control, prompting future investigations.

Abstract:Graham Little–Piccardi–Lassueur syndrome (GLPLS) is characterized by the triad of cicatricial scalp alopecia, keratosis pilaris-like eruption on the trunk and extremities, and non-scarring hair loss of the pubis and axillae. GLPLS was first reported in 1914 and since then, approximately 40 reports have appeared in the literature. The syndrome is currently classified by the North American Hair Research Society as a subtype of lichen planopilaris. A single previous reported case in 2004 highlighted the possible association between GLPLS and androgen insensitivity syndrome (testicular feminization). Herein, a second case of GLPLS associated with androgen insensitivity is reported. An approximately 40-year-old woman previously diagnosed complete androgen insensitivity syndrome was referred for the evaluation of hair loss. Keratosis pilaris began on the arms and legs in the patient’s teen years and was followed by scalp hair loss beginning on the crown in the early 20s. The scalp was pruritic in the areas of hair loss. There was no history of atopic dermatitis. Current medications included an ethinyl estradiol-levonorgestrel containing oral contraceptive. The patient had previously been using conjugated estrogens and medroxyprogesterone acetate following gonadectomy. Examination revealed a tall and phenotypically female patient. The patient had an approximately 25 cm 9 25 cm area of nearly complete scarring alopecia affecting the vertex and mid-scalp (Fig. 1). At the periphery of the scarred area, there were hair follicles with perifollicular erythema and scale. The pull test in this area was positive for anagen hairs. Facial hair was not present, and axillary and pubic hairs were sparse. A reduction in eyebrow hair density was noted. A keratosis pilaris-like eruption was present on the arms (Fig. 2), legs, and scattered on the trunk. A 4 mm punch biopsy from the scalp revealed extensive scarring. Perifollicular fibrosis and a perifollicular inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes were present in a manner consistent with the diagnosis of lichen planopilaris. There were no superficial or deep inflammatory infiltrates to suggest discoid lupus. The basement membrane was not thickened, and there were not epidermal interface changes. Neutrophils were not seen. Blood work revealed that the hemoglobin level was normal (141 g/l) as was serum ferritin (157 lg/l) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (1.84 mIU/l). The follicle-stimulating hormone level was elevated at 57 IU/l, and the estradiol level was low at 47 pmol/l. Testosterone was consistently low following previous gonadectomy at 0.7 nmol/l. Treatment was initiated with hydroxychloroquine 200 mg orally twice daily, intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (5 mg/ml up to 4 ml every 2–4 months), and topical clobetasol propionate 0.05% lotion but provided only minimal symptom improvement over a 6-month period. Abstract:Lower-limb assisted exoskeletons are widely researched for movement assistance or rehabilitation training. Due to advantages of compliance with human body and lightweight, some cable-driven prototypes have been developed, but most of these can assist only unidirectional movement. In this paper we present an untethered cable-driven ankle exoskeleton that can achieve plantarflexion-dorsiflexion bidirectional motion bilaterally using a pair of single motors. The main weights of the exoskeleton, i.e., the motors, power supplement units, and control units, were placed close to the proximity of the human body, i.e., the waist, to reduce the redundant rotation inertia which would apply on the wearer's leg. A cable force transmission system based on gear-pulley assemblies was designed to transfer the power from the motor to the end-effector effectively. A cable self-tension device on the power output unit was designed to tension the cable during walking. The gait detection system based on a foot pressure sensor and an inertial measurement unit (IMU) could identify the gait cycle and gait states efficiently. To validate the power output performance of the exoskeleton, a torque tracking experiment was conducted. When the subject was wearing the exoskeleton with power on, the muscle activity of the soleus was reduced by 5.2% compared to the state without wearing the exoskeleton. This preliminarily verifies the positive assistance effect of our exoskeleton. The study in this paper demonstrates the promising application of a lightweight cable-driven exoskeleton on human motion augmentation or rehabilitation.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is an important physiological response for determination of CO2 fertilization in greenhouses and estimation of crop growth. In order to estimate the whole plant photosynthetic rate, it is necessary to investigate how light interception by crops changes with environmental and morphological factors. The objectives of this study were to analyze plant light interception using a three-dimensional (3D) plant model and ray-tracing, determine the spatial distribution of the photosynthetic rate, and estimate the whole plant photosynthetic rate of Irwin mango (Mangifera indica L. cv. Irwin) grown in greenhouses. In the case of mangoes, it is difficult to measure actual light interception at the canopy level due to their vase shape. A two-year-old Irwin mango tree was used to measure the whole plant photosynthetic rate. Light interception and whole plant photosynthetic rate were measured under artificial and natural light conditions using a closed chamber (1 × 1 × 2 m). A 3D plant model was constructed and ray-tracing simulation was conducted for calculating the photosynthetic rate with a two-variable leaf photosynthetic rate model of the plant. Under artificial light, the estimated photosynthetic rate increased from 2.0 to 2.9 μmolCO2·m−2·s−1 with increasing CO2 concentration. On the other hand, under natural light, the photosynthetic rate increased from 0.2 μmolCO2·m−2·s−1 at 06:00 to a maximum of 7.3 μmolCO2·m−2·s−1 at 09:00, then gradually decreased to −1.0 μmolCO2·m−2·s−1 at 18:00. In validation, simulation results showed good agreement with measured results with R2 = 0.79 and RMSE = 0.263. The results suggest that this method could accurately estimate the whole plant photosynthetic rate and be useful for pruning and adequate CO2 fertilization.
