Abstract:Background: Automated coaches (eCoach) can help people lead a healthy lifestyle (e.g., reduction of sedentary bouts) with continuous health status monitoring and personalized recommendation generation with artificial intelligence (AI). Semantic ontology can play a crucial role in knowledge representation, data integration, and information retrieval. Methods: This study proposes a semantic ontology model to annotate the AI predictions, forecasting outcomes, and personal preferences to conceptualize a personalized recommendation generation model with a hybrid approach. This study considers a mixed activity projection method that takes individual activity insights from the univariate time-series prediction and ensemble multi-class classification approaches. We have introduced a way to improve the prediction result with a residual error minimization (REM) technique and make it meaningful in recommendation presentation with a Naïve-based interval prediction approach. We have integrated the activity prediction results in an ontology for semantic interpretation. A SPARQL query protocol and RDF Query Language (SPARQL) have generated personalized recommendations in an understandable format. Moreover, we have evaluated the performance of the time-series prediction and classification models against standard metrics on both imbalanced and balanced public PMData and private MOX2-5 activity datasets. We have used Adaptive Synthetic (ADASYN) to generate synthetic data from the minority classes to avoid bias. The activity datasets were collected from healthy adults (n = 16 for public datasets; n = 15 for private datasets). The standard ensemble algorithms have been used to investigate the possibility of classifying daily physical activity levels into the following activity classes: sedentary (0), low active (1), active (2), highly active (3), and rigorous active (4). The daily step count, low physical activity (LPA), medium physical activity (MPA), and vigorous physical activity (VPA) serve as input for the classification models. Subsequently, we re-verify the classifiers on the private MOX2-5 dataset. The performance of the ontology has been assessed with reasoning and SPARQL query execution time. Additionally, we have verified our ontology for effective recommendation generation. Results: We have tested several standard AI algorithms and selected the best-performing model with optimized configuration for our use case by empirical testing. We have found that the autoregression model with the REM method outperforms the autoregression model without the REM method for both datasets. Gradient Boost (GB) classifier outperforms other classifiers with a mean accuracy score of 98.00%, and 99.00% for imbalanced PMData and MOX2-5 datasets, respectively, and 98.30%, and 99.80% for balanced PMData and MOX2-5 datasets, respectively. Hermit reasoner performs better than other ontology reasoners under defined settings. Our proposed algorithm shows a direction to combine the AI prediction forecasting results in an ontology to generate personalized activity recommendations in eCoaching. Conclusion: The proposed method combining step-prediction, activity-level classification techniques, and personal preference information with semantic rules is an asset for generating personalized recommendations.

Abstract:Electronic coaching (eCoach) facilitates goal-focused development for individuals to optimize certain human behavior. However, the automatic generation of personalized recommendations in eCoaching remains a challenging task. This research paper introduces a novel approach that combines deep learning and semantic ontologies to generate hybrid and personalized recommendations by considering "Physical Activity" as a case study. To achieve this, we employ three methods: time-series forecasting, time-series physical activity level classification, and statistical metrics for data processing. Additionally, we utilize a naïve-based probabilistic interval prediction technique with the residual standard deviation used to make point predictions meaningful in the recommendation presentation. The processed results are integrated into activity datasets using an ontology called OntoeCoach, which facilitates semantic representation and reasoning. To generate personalized recommendations in an understandable format, we implement the SPARQL Protocol and RDF Query Language (SPARQL). We evaluate the performance of standard time-series forecasting algorithms [such as 1D Convolutional Neural Network Model (CNN1D), autoregression, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Gated Recurrent Units (GRU)] and classifiers [including Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Rocket, MiniRocket, and MiniRocketVoting] using state-of-the-art metrics. We conduct evaluations on both public datasets (e.g., PMData) and private datasets (e.g., MOX2-5 activity). Our CNN1D model achieves the highest prediction accuracy of 97[Formula: see text], while the MLP model outperforms other classifiers with an accuracy of 74[Formula: see text]. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our proposed OntoeCoach ontology model by assessing reasoning and query execution time metrics. The results demonstrate that our approach effectively plans and generates recommendations on both datasets. The rule set of OntoeCoach can also be generalized to enhance interpretability.
Meta Concept Recommendation Based on Knowledge Graph

Abstract:Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are playing a key role in improving educational ways. Abundant learning resources make it difficult for online users to find suitable learning content. The current personalized service in the field of online education relies more on course recommendations. However, coarse-grained recommendations cannot help users discover the defects of their knowledge network effectively. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge-Aware Meta-Concept (KAMC) framework to provide fine-grained recommendation services. We innovatively incorporate Knowledge Graph (KG) into the field of educational recommendation to provide abundant auxiliary information. However, simply combining knowledge graphs with educational recommender systems cannot improve the performance of existing recommendation models, and may even weaken the performance of the models. Because the modeled KG ignores the enhancements on the user side and only considers the enhancements on the item side. We further propose to enrich the semantic representation of users with collaborative information in user-item interactions, and at the same time enrich the semantic representation of items with information in KG. Furthermore, to provide users with more accurate and fine-grained personalized recommendation services, we propose a user-based attention mechanism to capture users’ fine-grained semantic information. Our method is experimentally validated on three real-world datasets. In the three datasets, KAMC’s AUC evaluation index is 6.2% , 6.9% , and 2.2% higher than the latest baseline method (KGAN), respectively. Experimental results show that the KAMC method outperforms the current state-of-the-art baseline methods.

Abstract:Background Lifestyle diseases, because of adverse health behavior, are the foremost cause of death worldwide. An eCoach system may encourage individuals to lead a healthy lifestyle with early health risk prediction, personalized recommendation generation, and goal evaluation. Such an eCoach system needs to collect and transform distributed heterogenous health and wellness data into meaningful information to train an artificially intelligent health risk prediction model. However, it may produce a data compatibility dilemma. Our proposed eHealth ontology can increase interoperability between different heterogeneous networks, provide situation awareness, help in data integration, and discover inferred knowledge. This “proof-of-concept” study will help sensor, questionnaire, and interview data to be more organized for health risk prediction and personalized recommendation generation targeting obesity as a study case. Objective The aim of this study is to develop an OWL-based ontology (UiA eHealth Ontology/UiAeHo) model to annotate personal, physiological, behavioral, and contextual data from heterogeneous sources (sensor, questionnaire, and interview), followed by structuring and standardizing of diverse descriptions to generate meaningful, practical, personalized, and contextual lifestyle recommendations based on the defined rules. Methods We have developed a simulator to collect dummy personal, physiological, behavioral, and contextual data related to artificial participants involved in health monitoring. We have integrated the concepts of “Semantic Sensor Network Ontology” and “Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine—Clinical Terms” to develop our proposed eHealth ontology. The ontology has been created using Protégé (version 5.x). We have used the Java-based “Jena Framework” (version 3.16) for building a semantic web application that includes resource description framework (RDF) application programming interface (API), OWL API, native tuple store (tuple database), and the SPARQL (Simple Protocol and RDF Query Language) query engine. The logical and structural consistency of the proposed ontology has been evaluated with the “HermiT 1.4.3.x” ontology reasoner available in Protégé 5.x. Results The proposed ontology has been implemented for the study case “obesity.” However, it can be extended further to other lifestyle diseases. “UiA eHealth Ontology” has been constructed using logical axioms, declaration axioms, classes, object properties, and data properties. The ontology can be visualized with “Owl Viz,” and the formal representation has been used to infer a participant’s health status using the “HermiT” reasoner. We have also developed a module for ontology verification that behaves like a rule-based decision support system to predict the probability for health risk, based on the evaluation of the results obtained from SPARQL queries. Furthermore, we discussed the potential lifestyle recommendation generation plan against adverse behavioral risks. Conclusions This study has led to the creation of a meaningful, context-specific ontology to model massive, unintuitive, raw, unstructured observations for health and wellness data (eg, sensors, interviews, questionnaires) and to annotate them with semantic metadata to create a compact, intelligible abstraction for health risk predictions for individualized recommendation generation.

Abstract:The widespread use of devices like mobile phones and wearables allows for automatic monitoring of human daily activities, generating vast datasets that offer insights into long-term human behavior. A structured and controlled data collection process is essential to unlock the full potential of this information. While wearable sensors for physical activity monitoring have gained significant traction in healthcare, sports science, and fitness applications, securing diverse and comprehensive datasets for research and algorithm development poses a notable challenge. In this proof-of-concept study, we underscore the significance of semantic representation in enhancing data interoperability and facilitating advanced analytics for physical activity sensor observations. Our approach focuses on enhancing the usability of physical activity datasets by employing a medical-grade (CE certified) sensor to generate synthetic datasets. Additionally, we provide insights into ethical considerations related to synthetic datasets. The study conducts a comparative analysis between real and synthetic activity datasets, assessing their effectiveness in mitigating model bias and promoting fairness in predictive analysis. We have created an ontology for semantically representing observations from physical activity sensors and conducted predictive analysis on data collected using MOX2-5 activity sensors. Until now, there has been a lack of publicly available datasets for physical activity collected with MOX2-5 activity monitoring medical grade (CE certified) device. The MOX2-5 captures and transmits high-resolution data, including activity intensity, weight-bearing, sedentary, standing, low, moderate, and vigorous physical activity, as well as steps per minute. Our dataset consists of physical activity data collected from 16 adults (Male: 12; Female: 4) over a period of 30–45 days (approximately 1.5 months), yielding a relatively small volume of 539 records. To address this limitation, we employ various synthetic data generation methods, such as Gaussian Capula (GC), Conditional Tabular General Adversarial Network (CTGAN), and Tabular General Adversarial Network (TABGAN), to augment the dataset with synthetic data. For both the authentic and synthetic datasets, we have developed a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) classification model for accurately classifying daily physical activity levels. The findings underscore the effectiveness of semantic ontology in semantic search, knowledge representation, data integration, reasoning, and capturing meaningful relationships between data. The analysis supports the hypothesis that the efficiency of predictive models improves as the volume of additional synthetic training data increases. Ontology and Generative AI hold the potential to expedite advancements in behavioral monitoring research. The data presented, encompassing both real MOX2-5 and its synthetic counterpart, serves as a valuable resource for developing robust methods in activity type classification. Furthermore, it opens avenues for exploration into research directions related to synthetic data, including model efficiency, detection of generated data, and considerations regarding data privacy.

Abstract:Our research aims to develop interactive, social agents that can coach people to learn new tasks, skills, and habits. In this article, we focus on coaching sedentary, overweight individuals (i.e., “trainees”) to exercise regularly. We employ adaptive goal setting in which the intelligent health coach generates, tracks, and revises personalized exercise goals for a trainee. The goals become incrementally more difficult as the trainee progresses through the training program. Our approach is model-based—the coach maintains a parameterized model of the trainee’s aerobic capability that drives its expectation of the trainee’s performance. The model is continually revised based on trainee-coach interactions. The coach is embodied in a smartphone application, N utri W alking , which serves as a medium for coach-trainee interaction. We adopt a task-centric evaluation approach for studying the utility of the proposed algorithm in promoting regular aerobic exercise. We show that our approach can adapt the trainee program not only to several trainees with different capabilities but also to how a trainee’s capability improves as they begin to exercise more. Experts rate the goals selected by the coach better than other plausible goals, demonstrating that our approach is consistent with clinical recommendations. Further, in a 6-week observational study with sedentary participants, we show that the proposed approach helps increase exercise volume performed each week.

Abstract:<p>One trend in the recent healthcare transformations is people are encouraged to monitor and manage their health based on their daily diets and physical activity habits. However, much attention of the use of operational research and analytical models in healthcare has been paid to the systematic level such as country or regional policy making or organisational issues. This paper proposes a model concerned with healthcare analytics at the individual level, which can predict human physical activity status from sequential lifelogging data collected from wearable sensors. The model has a two-stage hybrid structure (in short, MOGP-HMM) – a multi-objective genetic programming (MOGP) algorithm in the first stage to reduce the dimensions of lifelogging data and a hidden Markov model (HMM) in the second stage for activity status prediction over time. It can be used as a decision support tool to provide real-time monitoring, statistical analysis and personalized advice to individuals, encouraging positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles. We validate the model with the real data collected from a group of participants in the UK, and compare it with other popular two-stage hybrid models. Our experimental results show that the MOGP-HMM can achieve comparable performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the very first study that uses the MOGP in the hybrid two-stage structure for individuals' activity status prediction. It fits seamlessly with the current trend in the UK healthcare transformation of patient empowerment as well as contributing to a strategic development for more efficient and cost-effective provision of healthcare.</p>

Abstract:The utilization of digital health has increased recently, and these services provide extensive guidance to encourage users to exercise frequently by setting daily exercise goals to promote a healthy lifestyle. These comprehensive guides evolved from the consideration of various personalized behavioral factors. Nevertheless, existing approaches frequently neglect the users dynamic behavior and the changing in their health conditions. This study aims to fill this gap by developing a machine learning algorithm that dynamically updates auto-suggestion exercise goals using retrospective data and realistic behavior trajectory. We conducted a methodological study by designing a deep reinforcement learning algorithm to evaluate exercise performance, considering fitness-fatigue effects. The deep reinforcement learning algorithm combines deep learning techniques to analyse time series data and infer user exercise behavior. In addition, we use the asynchronous advantage actor-critic algorithm for reinforcement learning to determine the optimal exercise intensity through exploration and exploitation. The personalized exercise data and biometric data used in this study were collected from publicly available datasets, encompassing walking, sports logs, and running. In our study, we conducted The statistical analyses/inferential tests to compare the effectiveness of machine learning approach in exercise goal setting across different exercise goal setting strategies.

Predictive health behavior modeling using multimodal feature correlations via Medical Internet-of-Things devices

Abstract:Due to the advent of IoT (Internet of Things) based devices that help to monitor different human behavioral aspects. These aspects include sleeping patterns, activity patterns, heart rate variability (HRV) patterns, location-based moving patterns, blood oxygen levels, etc. A correlative study of these patterns can be used to find linkages of behavioral patterns with human health conditions. To perform this task, a wide variety of models is proposed by researchers, but most of them vary in terms of used parameters, which limits their accuracy of analysis. Moreover, most of these models are highly complex and have lower parameter flexibility, thus, cannot be scaled for real-time use cases. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes design of a behavior modeling method that assists in future health predictions via multimodal feature correlations using medical IoT devices via deep transfer learning analysis. The proposed model initially collects large-scale sensor data about the subjects, and correlates them with the existing medical conditions. This correlation is done via extraction of multidomain feature sets that assist in spectral analysis, entropy evaluations, scaling estimation, and window-based analysis. These multidomain feature sets are selected by a Firefly Optimizer (FFO) and are used to train a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) Model, that assists in prediction of different diseases. These predictions are used to train a recommendation engine that uses Apriori and Fuzzy C Means (FCM) for suggesting corrective behavioral measures for a healthier lifestyle under real-time conditions. Due to these operations, the proposed model is able to improve behavior prediction accuracy by 16.4%, precision of prediction by 8.3%, AUC (area under the curve) of prediction by 9.5%, and accuracy of corrective behavior recommendation by 3.9% when compared with existing methods under similar evaluation conditions.
Online Continual Learning for Human Activity Recognition

Abstract:Sensor-based human activity recognition (HAR), with the ability to recognise human activities from wearable or embedded sensors, has been playing an important role in many applications including personal health monitoring, smart home, and manufacturing. The real-world, long-term deployment of these HAR systems drives a critical research question: how to evolve the HAR model automatically over time to accommodate changes in an environment or activity patterns. This paper presents an online continual learning (OCL) scenario for HAR, where sensor data arrives in a streaming manner which contains unlabelled samples from already learnt activities or new activities. We propose a technique, OCL-HAR, making a real-time prediction on the streaming sensor data while at the same time discovering and learning new activities. We have empirically evaluated OCL-HAR on four third-party, publicly available HAR datasets. Our results have shown that this OCL scenario is challenging to state-of-the-art continual learning techniques that have significantly underperformed. Our technique OCL-HAR has consistently outperformed them in all experiment setups, leading up to 0.17 and 0.23 improvements in micro and macro F1 scores.
A Machine Learning Approach for Prediction of Sedentary Behavior Based on Daily Step Counts

Abstract:Sedentary behavior is considered as a major public health challenge, linked with many chronic diseases and premature mortality. In this paper, we propose a steps counting -based machine learning approach for the prediction of sedentary behavior. Our work focuses on analyzing historical data from multiple users of wearable physical activity trackers and exploring the performance of four machine learning algorithms, i.e., Logistic Regression, Random Forest, XGBoost, Convolutional Neural Networks, as well as a Majority Vote Ensemble of the algorithms. To train and test our models we employed a crowd sourced dataset containing a month's data of 33 users. For further evaluation, we employed a dataset containing 6 months of data of an additional user. The results revealed that while all models succeed in predicting next-day sedentary behavior, the ensemble model outperforms all baselines, as it manages to predict sedentary behavior and reduce false positives more effectively. On the multi-subjects test dataset, our ensemble model achieved an accuracy of 82.12% with a sensitivity of 74.53% and a specificity of 85.71%. On the additional unseen dataset, we achieved 76.88% in accuracy, 63.27% in sensitivity and 81.75% in specificity. These outcomes provide the ground towards the development of real-life artificially intelligent systems for sedentary behavior prediction.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Trauma patients who develop multi-organ dysfunction have increased systemic levels of chemotactic cytokines. Ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury to the gut may play a role. The purpose of this study was to examine chemokine production in a mouse model of mesenteric IR injury. Given the pre-eminent role of the neutrophil, there has been much investigation of the CXC chemokines, but very limited research on the CC and XC chemokines. We hypothesized that intestinal IR injury would induce remote organ injury and enhance serum CC and XC chemokine levels. METHODS Fasted female C57BL6 mice were anesthetized prior to laparotomy. In IR animals, the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) was occluded for 30, 45, or 75 min, while controls underwent sham laparotomy, n = 5-7 per group. After the indicated time point, the incision was closed and the mouse was allowed to recover for six hours. Following euthanasia, serum levels of 15 chemokines (10 CC, 4 CXC, and 1 XC) were assessed and histopathologic analyses performed. RESULTS Seventy-five minutes of SMA occlusion was the key time frame for significant serum cytokine level up-regulation, intestinal and remote organ injury, and neutrophil influx into tissues. With 75 min of intestinal ischemia, significantly elevated serum levels, as compared to shams, were noted for seven CC chemokines: MCP-1, MCP-3, MIP-1β, MIP-3β, eotaxin, MDC, and RANTES. Levels of the XC chemokine lymphotactin also increased. Levels of MIP-2, IP-10, and KC/GRO (CXC chemokines) rose significantly. MIP-1α levels were only significantly increased at 45 min IR. We did not find any significant IR injury-induced changes in levels of MCP-5, MIP-1γ, or GCP-2, at any ischemia time frame. Serum levels of IL-6 correspondingly increased significantly with longer ischemia times. CONCLUSIONS The novel finding of this study is the demonstration of significant systemic increases in the CC chemokines eotaxin, MCP-3, MDC, MIP-3β in a time-dependent manner, along with tissue injury. The data suggest a complex response to IR injury whereby chemokines that are active on a variety of leukocytes may play a role in inducing local and remote tissue injury.

Abstract:For software applications in health coaching domains to be effective, it is vital that they address issues of privacy, modularity, scalability, individualization, data integration, transferability, coordination and flexibility. In this paper, we propose a novel generic multi-agent architecture which serves as a template for health coaching applications involving wearable sensors. Analyzer and communication modules allow different functionalities like goal formation, planning, scheduling, event detection, learning, inter-agent + human communication and long-term data collection, based on the capabilities of the underlying sensor platforms. To show the flexibility of our proposed architecture, we have successfully built two different health coaching systems with the proposed architecture: (1) a static system based on the Fitbit platform where the coaching is done at specific preset times to encourage increased physical activity, and (2) a dynamic system based on the Apple Watch platform where the smart coach adapts and learns when to intervene to encourage physical activity and reduce sedentary behavior.

Abstract:Proactive monitoring of one's health could avoid serious diseases as well as better maintain the individual's well-being. In today's IoT world, there has been numerous wearable technological devices to monitor/measure different health attributes. However, with that increasing number of attributes and wearables, it becomes unclear to the individual which ones they should be using. The aim of this paper is to provide a recommendation engine for personalized recommended wearables for any given individual. The way the engine works is through first identifying the diseases that this person is at risk of, given his/her attributes and medical history. We built a machine learning classification model for this task. Second, these diseases are mapped to the attributes that need to be measured in order to monitor such diseases. Third, we map these measurements to the appropriate wearable technologies. This is done via a textual analytics model that we developed that uses available information of different wearables to map the aforementioned measurements to these wearables. The output can be used to recommend the wearables to individuals as well as provide a feedback to wearable developers for common measurements that do not have corresponding wearables today.

Abstract:Regular physical activity (PA), healthy habits, and an appropriate diet are recommended guidelines to maintain a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle can help to avoid chronic diseases and long-term illnesses. A monitoring and automatic personalized lifestyle recommendation system (i.e., automatic electronic coach or eCoach) with considering clinical and ethical guidelines, individual health status, condition, and preferences may successfully help participants to follow recommendations to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As a prerequisite for the prototype design of such a helpful eCoach system, it is essential to involve the end-users and subject-matter experts throughout the iterative design process.

Abstract:In modern healthcare, addressing the complexities of accurate disease prediction and personalized recommendations is both crucial and challenging. This research introduces MLtoGAI, which integrates Semantic Web technology with Machine Learning (ML) to enhance disease prediction and offer user-friendly explanations through ChatGPT. The system comprises three key components: a reusable disease ontology that incorporates detailed knowledge about various diseases, a diagnostic classification model that uses patient symptoms to detect specific diseases accurately, and the integration of Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) with ontology and ChatGPT to generate clear, personalized health advice. This approach significantly improves prediction accuracy and ensures results that are easy to understand, addressing the complexity of diseases and diverse symptoms. The MLtoGAI system demonstrates substantial advancements in accuracy and user satisfaction, contributing to developing more intelligent and accessible healthcare solutions. This innovative approach combines the strengths of ML algorithms with the ability to provide transparent, human-understandable explanations through ChatGPT, achieving significant improvements in prediction accuracy and user comprehension. By leveraging semantic technology and explainable AI, the system enhances the accuracy of disease prediction and ensures that the recommendations are relevant and easily understood by individual patients. Our research highlights the potential of integrating advanced technologies to overcome existing challenges in medical diagnostics, paving the way for future developments in intelligent healthcare systems. Additionally, the system is validated using 200 synthetic patient data records, ensuring robust performance and reliability.

PARIS: Personalized Activity Recommendation for Improving Sleep Quality

Abstract:The quality of sleep has a deep impact on people's physical and mental health. People with insufficient sleep are more likely to report physical and mental distress, activity limitation, anxiety, and pain. Moreover, in the past few years, there has been an explosion of applications and devices for activity monitoring and health tracking. Signals collected from these wearable devices can be used to study and improve sleep quality. In this paper, we utilize the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality to find ways of assisting people improve their sleep using machine learning techniques. People usually have several behavior modes that their bio-functions can be divided into. Performing time series clustering on activity data, we find cluster centers that would correlate to the most evident behavior modes for a specific subject. Activity recipes are then generated for good sleep quality for each behavior mode within each cluster. These activity recipes are supplied to an activity recommendation engine for suggesting a mix of relaxed to intense activities to subjects during their daily routines. The recommendations are further personalized based on the subjects' lifestyle constraints, i.e. their age, gender, body mass index (BMI), resting heart rate, etc, with the objective of the recommendation being the improvement of that night's quality of sleep. This would in turn serve a longer-term health objective, like lowering heart rate, improving the overall quality of sleep, etc.

Abstract:Machine learning (ML) is the fastest growing field in computer science and healthcare, providing future benefits in improved medical diagnoses, disease analyses and prevention. In this paper, we introduce an application of interactive machine learning (iML) in a telemedicine system, to enable automatic and personalised interventions for lifestyle promotion. We first present the high level architecture of the system and the components forming the overall architecture. We then illustrate the interactive machine learning process design. Prediction models are expected to be trained through the participants' profiles, activity performance, and feedback from the caregiver. Finally, we show some preliminary results during the system implementation and discuss future directions. We envisage the proposed system to be digitally implemented, and behaviourally designed to promote healthy lifestyle and activities, and hence prevent users from the risk of chronic diseases.

Abstract:We are developing a virtual coaching system that helps patients adhere to behavior change interventions (BCI). Our proposed system predicts whether a patient will perform the targeted behaviour and uses counterfactual examples with feature control to guide personalisation of BCI. We use simulated patient data with varying levels of receptivity to intervention to arrive at the study design which would enable evaluation of our system.
