Abstract:Background: Impaction of mandibular third molars (M3) is one of the most common diseases. Extraction of M3 usually exacerbates osseous defects at the distal aspect of the adjacent second molar (M2). BonMaker® ATB has been cited as a novel autogenous bone grafting material. The aim of this pilot study was to introduce a novel method for repairing the distal osseous defects of M2 after the surgical removal of M3 with autogenous tooth graft powder (ATGP). Method: A total of five patients were enrolled in this prospective split-mouth clinical pilot study. Four impacted wisdom teeth were extracted bilaterally from each patient with proximal alveolar bone loss ≥ 5 mm of M3. The ATGP was prepared chairside from two extracted one side third molars and randomly implanted in one of the M3 extraction sockets, and the other side was treated with a blank and considered the control site. Patients were followed up at 6 months. Results: The five patients included three males and two females. Their ages ranged from 25 to 30 years, with a median of 27 years. Primary wound healing without complications was achieved in all the patients. There was a greater tendency for swelling of the cheeks and trismus to occur at the experimental site on the third postoperative day. Compared with the control site, the experimental site exhibited progressive bone filling and ossification in the sixth postoperative month. Moreover, the probing pocket depth of the experimental site was lower than that of the control site. Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrate that ATGP effectively and economically repairs distal osseous defects of M2. Further study is required to validate the effectiveness with a larger study population.
Efficacy of Bone Grafts in Jaw Cystic Lesions: A Systematic Review

Abstract:BACKGROUND Bone grafts have been applied for many years in orthopedic surgery to assist with bone repair for defects or bone discontinuity caused by trauma and tumors as well as periodontal defects. Jaw cysts are another common benign disease of the maxillofacial region which may lead to pathological bone fracture, loss of teeth, and infection. However, whether bone grafts are beneficial for bone regeneration in jaw cystic lesions and when bone grafts should be used remains unclear. AIM To study the efficacy of bone grafts compared to spontaneous healing in the treatment of jaw cystic lesions. METHODS A literature search was performed in Medline, Cochrane Library and Embase to identify related articles published in English in the last ten years. The following key words and MeSH terms were used: “jaw cyst”, “cystic lesion”, “odontogenic cyst”, “periapical cyst”, “dentigerous cyst”, “follicular cyst”, “keratocyst”, “treatment”, “surgery”, “bone graft”, “enucleation”, “cystectomy”, and “bone regeneration”. Case reports, clinical trials, clinical studies, observational studies and randomized controlled trials were included. Study quality was evaluated. RESULTS Ten studies (n = 10) met the inclusion criteria. Five studies reported spontaneous bone healing after enucleation, three studies investigated the efficacy of various bone grafts, and two randomized comparative studies focused on the comparison between spontaneous healing and bone grafting. Over 90% of bone regeneration occurred within 6 mo after bone grafting. The bone regeneration rate after cystectomy showed great variation, ranging from 50% to 100% after 6 mo, but reaching over 90% after 12 mo. CONCLUSION While the long-term superiority of bone grafting compared with spontaneous healing after cystectomy is unclear, bone grafts accelerate the process of healing and significantly increase bone quality.
Radiographic Bone Volume Alteration after Jaw Cyst Enucleation with or Without Simultaneous Bone Grafts: A Prospective Randomized Study

Abstract:Objective This study was aimed to evaluate bone healing after jaw cyst enucleation with or without bone substitutes by cone beam computed tomography, and to analyze potential influence factors for bone formation as well. Materials and Methods Sixty seven jaw cyst patients were randomly assigned to two groups. Thirty three patients in control group accepted cystectomy without any filling material. The rest 34 bone cavities which filled with xenograft (DBBM, Bio-Oss (R)) and covered by absorbable membrane (Bio-Gide (R)) were included in the guided bone regeneration (GBR) group. All patients were examined with cone bean computerized tomography before operation, 3 and 6 months after surgery. Linear regression analysis was applied to evaluate the influence factors of bone healing. Results There was no significant difference in bone formation rate at 3 months after enucleation, with shrinkage rate (SR) of cystic lesion in control group and GBR group of 26.43 +/- 14.98% and 20.78 +/- 10.80%, respectively (p > 0.05). Larger shrinkage area in GBR group was detected on postoperative radiographs after 6 months with SR of 60.11 +/- 19.23%, when compared to those in patients without filling (6 months SR: 48.63 +/- 19.39%, p = 0.018, <0.05). Linear regression analysis showed that cyst size was negatively correlated with bone formation. Conclusion GBR with bovine xenograft and absorbable membrane showed considerable bone regeneration property in the healing of jaw cystic defects after enucleation of radicular cysts. Cyst size showed a suppressive influence on bone formation.

Abstract:Objective:To explore the curative effects of platelet-rich plasma(PRP) in the restoration of jaw cyst cavities.Methods:24 patients were randomly divided into experinental group and control group.PRP with soluble gauze for hemostasis were used to fill the jaw cavity after curettage of the cyst on experinental group,and soluble gauze alone for hemostasis were used to fill the jaw cavity on control group.X-ray observations were checked in 6 months after operation.Results:X-ray examinations showed the bone mineral density of cyst cavities recovered better on experinental group than on control group.Conclusions:PRP can be used to promote the recovery of the defect area.
Effect of Autologous Concentrated Growth Factor Fibrin Solution Combined with Bio-Oss Bone Powder on Mucosal Healing and Bone Regeneration after Oral Implanted Guided Bone Regeneration

Abstract:PURPOSE:To investigate the effect of autologous concentrated growth factor fibrin solution combined with Bio-Oss bone powder on mucosal healing and bone regeneration after oral implanted guided bone regeneration.METHODS:From October 2016 to December 2018, 83 patients with maxillary single anterior tooth loss and labial bone defect were treated, they were divided into two groups. Patients in the experimental group (42 cases) received autologous concentrated growth factor fibrin solution + Bio-Oss bone powder, while patients in the control group (41 cases) received Bio-Oss bone powder alone. The degree of mucosal healing, implant success, bone defect regeneration, pain and other complications were followed up 7 days, 6 weeks and 1 year after operation. The success rate and complications of the two groups were observed, as well as the differences of mucosal color, swelling degree, bleeding index, depth of probing, attachment loss, height of bone graft and thickness of bone formation were measured and recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 25.0 software package.RESULTS:There was no significant difference in the success rate of implants between the two groups (95.24% vs 97.56%, P>0.05). The complication rate of the experimental group was significantly lower than that of the control group (2.38% vs 14.63%, P<0.05). The mucosal color and swelling degree scores of the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the control group [(0.65±0.03) points vs (2.01±0.15) points, (1.10±0.37) points vs (2.69±0.54) points, P<0.05], and the bleeding index, probing depth, and attachment loss were significantly lower than the control group [(0.35±0.05) vs (0.49±0.09), (3.39±0.62) mm vs (4.41±0.95) mm, (3.02±0.66) mm vs (5.31±0.91) mm, P<0.05], bone graft height and osteogenesis height were significantly higher than the control group [(2.61±0.50) mm vs (2.20±0.31) mm, (2.53±0.34) mm vs (2.02±0.27) mm, P<0.05]. The degree of postoperative pain in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group(P<0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Rich self-concentrating growth factor fibrin solution combined with Bio-Oss bone powder can effectively promote mucosal healing and bone regeneration after oral implant-guided bone regeneration, and reduce postoperative pain and complications.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to counter the osteogenesis effects of processed autogenous tooth bone and xenogeneic bovine bone following tooth extraction and to provide an experimental basis for clinical applications. METHODS Central incisors were extracted with general anesthesia on both sides of a maxillary arch in 12 rabbits, which were randomly divided into three groups, thereby containing four rabbits in each group. Three rabbits were assigned to the experimental groups and one was for the control group. In the experimental groups, the xenogeneic bovine bone was applied to the left incisor socket, whereas the processed autogenous tooth bone was applied to the right incisor socket. The blank control group only extracted the teeth and did not implant any bone powder. The three groups died after 4, 8, and 12 weeks, respectively. A mineralization degree of new bone tissues was observed by fluorescence staining and the formation of a new bone was observed by histology. RESULTS The sedimentary mineralization rate was greater in the processed autogenous tooth bone than in the xenogeneic bovine bone (P<0.05). The trabecular bone of the xenogeneic bovine bone was sparse and slender. The left sockets, which were filled with the xenogeneic bovine bone, had more woven and less lamellar bones than the right sockets, which were filled with the processed autogenous tooth bone. CONCLUSIONS The processed autogenous tooth bone offers more advantages as a bone-grafting material than the xenogeneic bovine bone in terms of bone increment.

A novel concentrated growth factor (CGF) and bio-oss based strategy for second molar protection after impacted mandibular third molar extraction: a randomized controlled clinical study

Abstract:Abstract Background The extraction of impacted mandibular third molars might cause large bone defects in the distal area of second molars. A new strategy was innovatively employed here combining autologous bone, Bio-Oss, concentrated growth factors (CGF) gel and CGF membrane for bone repair, and the present study aimed at exploring safety as well as short- and long-term efficacy of this new protocol clinically. Materials and methods A total of 66 participants were enrolled in this randomized single-blind clinical trial, and randomly allocated to control group (only blood clots), test A group (autogenous bone, Bio-Oss with barrier membrane) and test B group (autogenous bone, Bio-Oss, CGF gel with CGF membrane). The postoperative outcomes including PoSSe scale, periodontal probing depth (PD), degree of gingival recession and computed tomography measurements were assessed at 3rd, 6th, 12th month. A p-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results In PoSSe scale, no significant difference was observed except a significant alleviation of early-stage pain perception in test B group (p < 0.05). Also, test B group exhibited better effect on periodontal healing and gingival recession reduction after 6 months (p < 0.05). Both two test groups showed more new bone formation than the control group (p < 0.05). It is noteworthy that the bone repair of test B group was significantly better than that of test A at 3rd and 6th month (p 0.05). Conclusion Both two test groups could achieve stable long-term efficacy on bone defect repair. The use of CGF gel and CGF membrane could accelerate early-stage bone repair, alleviate short-term pain after surgery, reduce long-term probing depth and relieve economic cost for patients. This new bone repair protocol is worthy of promoting by clinicians. Trial registration This study was registered with the identification number ChiCTR2300068466 on 20/02/2023 at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry. Also, it was ethically approved from the institutional ethics committee at the Tongren Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China (No:2023-010-01), and has been conducted in accordance to the guidelines of the declaration of Helsinki. Written informed consent was obtained from all participants in the study.

Abstract:Background: It is common to see patients who need orthodontic treatment but with insufficient alveolar bone volume. However, safe and effective tooth movement requires sufficient alveolar bone width and height. The aim of this study is to compare the bone augmentation efficacy of Autologous Partially Demineralized Dentin Matrix (APDDM) and Deproteinized Bovine Bone Mineral (DBBM) in orthodontic patients with insufficient bone by using a randomized controlled clinical trial approach. Materials and methods: Twenty-seven orthodontic patients involving 40 posterior teeth alveolar sites (n = 40) with insufficient alveolar bone volume were randomly divided into a control group (n = 20) and an experimental group (n = 20). The patients in the experimental group were treated with APDDM, and those in the control group were treated with DBBM. After surgery, the adjacent teeth are moved toward the bone grafting sites according to the orthodontic treatment plan. Patients completed a postoperative response questionnaire by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) score to indicate pain and swelling in the bone grafted area at the time of suture removal; and CBCT scans were conducted before surgery, 6 months and 2 years after surgery to assess changes in buccal and central alveolar heights, as well as widths at the alveolar ridge apex and 3 mm, 5 mm below the apex, respectively. The CBCT image sequences were imported into Mimics 21.0 software in DICOM format. The data of the patients in both groups were collected and analyzed by SPSS 25.0. Results: The VAS scores were significantly lower in the APDDM group than in the DBBM group (p < 0.05). Significant increases were observed in alveolar bone height and width at 6 months and 2 years postoperative (p < 0.05); At 2 years, the APDDM group exhibited a reduction in buccal crest height and in 3 mm, 5 mm width below alveolar ridge apex, relative to 6 months (p < 0.05), while the DBBM group showed a decrease only in the central height of the alveolar bone (p < 0.05). There was a significant bone augmentation increase found only 3 mm below the alveolar ridge apex in the APDDM group compared with the DBBM group among all 6 months group comparison (p < 0.05). At 2 years, the augmentation effects were similar across both groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Radiomics analysis indicates that APDDM serves as a viable bone augmentation material for orthodontic patients with insufficient alveolar bone volume, achieving comparable clinical efficacy to DBBM. Abstract:Abstract Curettage of benign bone tumor is a common cause for bone defect. For such bone defect repair, autogenous bone, allogeneic bone and traditional artificial bone graft substitutes have many disadvantages. In recent years, a biomimetic mineralized collagen (MC) with similar composition and microstructures to the natural bone matrix was developed and used for treating various bone defects. In this work, a retrospective study analyzed clinical outcomes of patients treated with curettage of benign bone tumors and bone grafting with MC, in comparison to another group treated with the same surgical method and autogenous bone. Lane–Sandhu X-ray score of the autogenous bone group was superior to the MC group at 1 month after the operation, but the two groups had no statistical difference at 6 and 12 months. The MC group was better in Musculoskeletal Tumor Society scoring at 1 and 6 months after the operation, and the two groups had no statistical difference at 12 month. Therefore, the MC performed not as good as autogenous bone in early stage of bone healing but achieved comparable outcomes in long-term follow-ups. Moreover, the MC has advantages in function recovery and avoided potential complications induced by harvesting autogenous bone.

The impact of autologous concentrated growth factors on the alveolar ridge preservation after posterior tooth extraction: A prospective, randomized controlled clinical trial

Abstract:Background: Alveolar ridge preservation can effectively decrease alveolar ridge resorption following tooth extraction, but it can be limited by reducing new bone formation and residual bone graft material. Efforts to develop more efficacious approaches are thus an area of active research. Purpose: To assess the impact of autologous concentrated growth factors (CGF) on alveolar ridge absorption and osteogenesis following posterior tooth extraction. Materials and methods: Fifty patients were randomly assigned to have extraction sockets treated with CGF or no treatment. At 10 days, 1 month, and 3 months postextraction, soft tissue color and texture were examined and evaluated with healing score. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were performed before and 3 months after extraction, while radiographic analyses were used to assess vertical and horizontal bone changes. Bone samples were collected from the extraction sockets during implant placement, and micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scans and histological analysis were performed to evaluate new bone formation. t-Test or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare data and the level of statistical significance was set at 0.05 for all analyses. Results: Forty-six patients completed the trial. Sockets in the experimental group exhibited significantly better healing score on Day 10 postextraction relative to the control group, whereas comparable healing was observed in both groups at 1 and 3 months postextraction. Experimental group exhibited reduced vertical bone changes relative to the control (p < 0.05). Significant reductions were observed in ridge width changes at 1 and 2 mm apical to the crest (p < 0.05), although differences at 3 and 5 mm apical to the crest were not significant. Significant differences of bone mineral density (BMD) and microarchitecture of trabecular bone were observed via micro-CT analyses, and the experimental group had better results. Conclusion: CGF application following posterior tooth extraction may reduce vertical and horizontal bone resorption and promote new bone formation.
Comparative Effectiveness of an Autologous Dentin Matrix for Alveolar Ridge Preservation

Abstract:An urgent issue is the preservation or reconstruction of the volume of bone tissue in planning and surgical treatment in the fields of medicine, such as traumatology, orthopedics, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. After tooth extraction, resorption of the bone tissue of the alveolar crest of the jaws occurs, which must either be further eliminated by performing additional operations or using osteoplastic material for socket preservation at the extraction stage. Background and Objectives: The aim of the study was a comparative analysis of various osteoplastic materials used to preserve the volume of bone tissue in the preimplantation period. Materials and Methods: As part of the study, 80 patients were treated, who underwent socket preservation using xenografts, plasma enriched with growth factors, an autologous dentin matrix (ADM) and hydroxyapatite. Results: The results of the treatment 16 weeks after removal were comprehensively analyzed using a morphometric analysis of the bone's volume, cone beam tomography and morphological examination of burr biopsy specimens, as well as by determining the stability of the installed implant at different stages of treatment. Conclusions: The lowest level of bone tissue resorption according to the CBCT data was noted in the ADM and xenograft groups. It should be noted that the use of osteoplastic material in jaw surgery when reconstructing alveolar defects is an essential procedure for preventing the atrophy of bone tissue.
Comprehensive repair of the alveolar cleft using cortical and cancellous bone layers: A retrospective study

Abstract:Objective To retrospectively review the clinical effect of comprehensive treatment of alveolar cleft (CTAC) using the mandible as the bone source. Methods Patients with alveolar clefts who met the inclusion criteria were subjected to a CTAC protocol that included the following: (1) preoperative orthodontic treatment for creating good soft-tissue conditions; (2) 'area-like grafting' with subperiosteal osteogenic chin bone instead of cartilaginous osteogenic iliac bone; (3) simulation of normal bone anatomy via a sandwich-like bone graft consisting of 'cortical bone + cancellous bone + cortical bone'; and (4) strong internal fixation to ensure initial bone block stability. At 6 months postoperatively, the titanium plate was removed and cone-beam computed tomography was performed to evaluate the surgical results. Results A total of 54 patients underwent treatment with the CTAC protocol. The average age at the initial operation was 10.3 ± 2.1 years, and the average hospital stay was 2.8 ± 0.6 days. At 6 months postoperatively, 49 patients (90.7%) showed good clinical results. The transplanted bone block formed a 'cortical bone + cancellous bone + cortical bone' structure similar to that of the normal jawbone. A mature bone bridge formed, and the impacted permanent teeth continued to erupt and enter the bone graft area. Conclusion CTAC is a comprehensive restorative solution for alveolar cleft repair that integrates multiple concepts, including orthodontics, embryology, anatomy, and improvements to surgical methods. The method is easy to perform, causes little surgical trauma, and shows a stable success rate, and is thus worth promoting.

Abstract:Background/Objectives: Various bone substitutes have been recommended to augment the horizontal gap following immediate implantation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of an autogenous mineralized dentin graft or a deproteinized bovine bone in horizontal gap augmentation following immediate implant placement in the maxillary anterior region. Methods: A total of 110 patients underwent tooth extraction followed by immediate implant placement. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group received an autogenous mineralized dentin graft (the test group) while the second group received a deproteinized bovine bone (the control group) to augment the horizontal gap. Preoperative (T0), immediate postoperative (T1), and 1-year postoperative (T2) cone beam computed tomography scans were taken from all the patients. Linear measurements were recorded 1 mm (R1) and 5 mm (R2) points apical to the implant platform at both T1 and T2 time intervals. Pink Esthetic Scores and prosthetic complications were evaluated as well. Results: There were 57 patients with a mean age of 45.42 ± 9.86 (range 24–63 years) selected as the test group and 53 patients with a mean age of 40.28 ± 11.69 (range 20–63 years) as the control group. The mean reduction in the buccal bone plate at R1 was 6.39 ± 3.78% in the test group and 6.99 ± 5.01% in the control group (p > 0.05). The mean reduction in the buccal bone plate at R2 was 5.46 ± 4.98% in the test group and 6.77 ± 7.60% in the control group (p 0.05). Conclusions: The efficiency of using an autogenous mineralized dentin graft for horizontal gap augmentation showed similar results in comparison to using a deproteinized bovine bone in relation to buccolingual socket reduction following immediate implantation.

Abstract:Dentigerous cyst are most common odontogenic cyst and they frequently occur at the mandibular third molar. Their asymptomatic long medical history always resulted in severe bone resorption at the distal aspect of the adjacent second molar. BonMaker® ATB demonstrate an excellent autogenous bone graft candidacy. The aim of this study is to share a single team's experience of dentigerous cyst osseous defect repairing by applying autogenous tooth sticky bone graft.

Comparative Clinical, Radiographical and Biochemical Evaluation of Autogenous Bone Graft in Periodontal Infrabony Defects: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Periodontitis leads to loss of the toothsupporting tissues, eventually resulting in loss of teeth. Ideal treatment should involve not only the prevention of further attachment loss, but the regeneration of lost supporting tissues, comprising new alveolar bone and a new periodontal ligament [1]. Various attempts to stimulate periodontal regeneration in the past have focused on filling the defect with some type of material, providing a space or adding growth factors to induce the host cells to form bone [2]. Over the last decades different modalities of regenerative treatment have been developed and applied clinically [3]. Among all the graft materials only autografts and Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allografts (DFDBA) have demonstrated a potential to achieve periodontal regeneration [3]. Historically, autografts were the first bone replacement grafts to be reported for periodontal applications. Autogenous grafts, which are harvested from the patients’ own body, are considered the gold standard among graft materials because they are superior at retaining cell viability. These grafts contain live osteoblasts and osteoprogenitor stem cells and heal by osteogenesis. It avoids any risk of rejection or disease transmission. Autogenous bone has osteoconductive, osteoinductive and osteogenic properties [4]. The choice of an autogenous donor site is often based on the amount of bone needed. Extra-oral bone grafts are usually taken from iliac crest, the tibia, or the skull and are used when large amounts of bone are needed. These procedures result in significant morbidity and discomfort to the patient. Conversely, when smaller amount of bone is required, intraoral sites for procuring the graft has several advantages, including reduced operating time & hospitalization as well as lower morbidity and avoidance of cutaneous scarring. But, a second surgical site is still needed. However, the need for second surgical site can be avoided with the use of bone scraper, back action chisel, rongeurs or a bone mill to obtain bone during the surgical procedure [2]. Among all these, bone scraper combines the benefits of both viability and easy procurement over trephines, bone mills or roungers. This hand held instrument (bone scraper) cuts and collects thin shavings of bone from cortical surfaces. The scraperderived matrix of ribbon like bone shavings and blood has a mortal like consistency and can be easily adapted to the alveolar deficiency to reshape the alveolar crest profile [5]. This controlled clinical study, has focused on the efficacy of autogenous bone graft collected with the help of bone scraper over open flap debridement in treatment of human periodontal infrabony defects. When placed into healthy bleeding bone, the negativecharged surface of autogenous bone graft accelerated the bone-growth cascade. The separation in charge between the solid phase of bone and extracellular matrix creates a potential difference between the solid and the liquid called the zeta potential, which influences the type and nature of proteins and cells harnessed by the surface [6].

Periodontal Wound Healing by Transplantation of Jaw Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Chitosan/Anorganic Bovine Bone Carrier into One-Wall Infrabony Defects in Beagles.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:This study aims to evaluate the performance of chitosan/anorganic bovine bone (C/ABB) scaffold seeded with human jaw bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hJBMMSCs) in supporting the healing/repair of 1-wall critical-size periodontal defects.METHODS:Physical properties of the C/ABB scaffold were compared with those of the chitosan scaffold. hJBMMSCs were obtained from healthy human alveolar bone during the extraction of third molar impacted teeth. One-wall (7 × 4 mm) infrabony defects were surgically created at the bilateral mandibular third premolars and first molars in six beagles. The defects were randomly assigned to six groups and implanted with different scaffolds: 1) chitosan (C) scaffold; 2) C scaffold with hJBMMSCs (C + cell); 3) C/ABB scaffold (C/ABB); 4) C/ABB scaffold with hJBMMSCs (C/ABB + cell); 5) ABB scaffold (ABB); and 6) open flap debridement (control). The animals were euthanized 8 weeks after surgery for histologic analysis.RESULTS:The C/ABB scaffold had a porous structure and increased compressive strength. Both C/ABB and C/ABB + cell exhibited the newly formed cellular mixed-fiber cementum, woven/lamellar bone, and periodontal ligament. Cementum formation was significantly greater in group C/ABB + cell than in group C/ABB (2.64 ± 0.50 mm versus 0.91 ± 0.55 mm, P <0.05). For new bone (NB) height, group C/ABB + cell and C/ABB showed mean ± SD values of 2.83 ± 0.29 mm and 2.65 ± 0.52 mm and for NB area 8.89 ± 1.65 mm and 8.73 ± 1.94 mm(2), respectively. For NB (height and area), there was no significant difference between the two groups.CONCLUSIONS:The combination of hJBMMSCs and C/ABB scaffolds could promote periodontal repair. Future studies are expected to further optimize the combination and lead to an ideal periodontal regeneration.

Abstract:Bone graft materials have mixed effects of bone repair in the field of oral maxillofacial surgery. The qualitative analyses performed by previous studies imply that autogenous odontogenic materials and autogenous bone have similar effects on bone repair in clinical jaw bone transplantation. This retrospective systematic assessment and network meta-analysis aimed to analyze the best effect of clinical application of autogenous odontogenic materials and autogenous, allogeneic, and xenogeneic bone grafts in bone defect repair. A systematic review was performed by searching the PubMed, Cochrane Library, and other journal databases using selected keywords and Medical Subject Headings search terms. 10 Papers (n = 466) that met the inclusion criteria were selected. The assessment of heterogeneity did not reveal any overall statistical difference or heterogeneity (P = 0.051 > 0.05), whereas the comparison between autogenous and allogeneic bone grafts revealed local heterogeneity (P = 0.071 0.05), and the local inconsistency test did not reveal any inconsistency. The publication bias was good. The confidence regarding the ranking of bone graft materials after GRADE classification was moderate. The effects on bone repair in the descending order were as follows: autogenous odontogenic materials, xenogeneic bone, autogenous bone, and allogeneic bone. This result indicates that the autogenous odontogenic materials displayed stronger effects on bone repair compared to other bone graft materials. Autogenous odontogenic materials have broad development prospects in oral maxillofacial surgery.

Abstract:Aim: To compare the effects of milled tooth (MT) powder and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) on healing of extraction sockets in rabbits. Methods: Sixty healthy adult male rabbits were divided into four groups (n=15). After anesthesia the right mandibular first molars were extracted and the treated materials (β-TCP or MT) were gently applied to the extraction sockets forming two groups. In the positive (+ve) control group, sockets healed spontaneously. In the negative (-ve) control group, jaws were left without any interference. Five rabbits from each group were euthanized 10, 20, and 30 days after surgery. Specimens were prepared for light microscopic examination using hematoxylin and eosin, Masson’s trichrome staining, and osteopontin. ANOVA was used to assess the statistical significance of the difference between more than two group means. Tukey's multiple comparisons and post-hoc tests were used to explore differences between the means of multiple groups. Results: Regarding osteoid tissue formation by Masson’s trichrome staining, a highly significant difference recorded between -ve control, +ve control/10 d, β-TCP/20 d, MT/10 d, and MT/30 d groups. However, no significant differences were detected between the -ve control and +ve control, β-TCP/ 20 d, β-TCP/30 d, and MT/30 d groups. Higher expression of osteopontin were detected in the β-TCP/20 d and MT/30 d groups, and a highly significant difference was observed compared to the +ve control group. Conclusions: MT powder is a biocompatible osteoconductive graft material that can be used as bone graft material in tooth extraction socket healing.
