Abstract:The rapid development of society and industry as well as the frequent occurrence of oil spills cause the shortage of fresh water resources, which not only affects human safety and life, but also impedes the world-wide sustainable development. To address these challenges, novel membrane materials with unique wettability properties have gained significant attention, particularly in the field of oil/water separation. In this research, we modified the hydrophobic PET fabric to achieve superhydrophilic characteristics using impregnation method. Subsequently, we electrospun hydrophobic PVDF fibers onto the superhydrophilic fabric surface, and PVDF/Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2@-PET Janus membrane with asymmetric wettability was obtained. The membrane has an excellent unidirectional liquid transport capacity, and can effectively separate heavy oil or light oil, the separation efficiency is more than 90 %. The results also show that the Janus membrane can be used under alkaline conditions and has satisfactory tensile resistance and re-use performance. This work provides a new idea for Janus membrane design and effectively improves the application potential of the Janus membrane in the field of oil/water separation.

Abstract:Conventional wastewater treatment systems generally require multiple steps and complex procedures to remove aqueous pollutants and oil contaminants from polluted water. Herein, we fabricate an underwater superoleophobic membrane by cross-linking konjac glucomannan on pristine fabrics, demonstrating that the concept of oil water separation and the principle of aqueous pollutant removal can be integrated. Such biopolymer-modified fabric not only separates oil water mixtures with high efficiency (up to 99.9%), but also exhibits the intriguing characteristic of removing water-soluble pollutants (including polyaromatic dyes and heavy metal ions). As a proof of concept, the synthetic wastewater purified with biopolymer membranes was used to cultivate and irrigate pinto beans, causing I KGMF after use no observable deleterious effect on seed germination and growth. These results further confirm the biocompatibility and effectiveness of biopolymer membranes, offering an encouraging solution to challenges including wastewater treatment and cleanup of oil spills.

Abstract:With the continuous development of the industry, oil spill accidents occur frequently. Oil/water separation materials are considered to be a major choice for the treatment of oily wastewater due to their flexible operation and low cost. Cotton fabrics are low‐cost and environmentally friendly, which are used as substrates to prepare oil/water separation materials with quite competitive in the market. A large number of oil/water separation cotton fabrics with excellent properties have been frequently reported in recent decades. On the other hand, since the service life of these oil/water separation cotton fabrics is closely related to the thin layer covered on the surface, so in order to improve the practical applicability, substances such as dopamine and plant polyphenols that improve the adhesion of the thin layer to the surface of the material are introduced into the preparation process of these materials. On this basis, the research progress of super‐hydrophobic cotton fabrics, super‐hydrophilic/underwater super‐oleophobic cotton fabrics, super durable oil/water separation cotton fabrics and intelligent response to oil/water separation fabric in recent years are reviewed, as well as their applications in the field of oil/water separation.

Abstract:Recently, large quantities of oily wastewater discharged from our daily life and industries have caused serious environmental problems. In addition, frequent oil spill accidents occurred all over the world have also lead to a waste of precious resources. Oil/water separation has become a worldwide challenge for us to overcome. Nowadays, superwetting materials have attracted considerable attention. Among them, porous materials with special wettability are more popular since this kind of materials is easy to fabricate, cost saving and time saving. Moreover, by combining the design of special wettability with the proper pore size, the porous materials could achieve the separation of sundry oil/water mixtures including immiscible oil/water mixtures and stabilized emulsions. In this review, we summarized two types of superwetting porous materials for immiscible oil/water mixtures separation and emulsion separation: water blocking porous materials with superhydrophobic/superoleophilic wettability and oil blocking porous materials with superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic wettability. In each type, we introduce the mechanism, fabricating process, effects of oily wastewater treatment and the representative works in detail. Moreover, the smart controllable superwetting porous materials and the wastewater treatment of other pollutants are also introduced briefly. Two types of superwetting porous materials for oil/water separation and emulsion separation are summarized in this review: water blocking porous materials with superhydrophobic/superoleophilic wettability and oil blocking porous materials with superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic wettability. Through combining the special wettability with proper porous substrates, these superwetting materials are able to achieve both the immiscible oil/water separation and emulsion separation. The design, fabricating process, effects of oily wastewater treatment and the representative works are introduced in detail.

Abstract:Recently, in consideration of environmental pollution and serious impact on human health caused by the frequent occurrence of oily wastewater and oil leakage accidents, a multifunctional superwetting material is urgently desired to solve this issue. Therefore, in this article, a simple, moderate, and environmentally friendly strategy has been developed by polymerizing in situ growth of the fabric and adding two kinds of micro-nanoparticles such as silica and magnesium oxide that can improve the roughness. The synergy makes it possible to fabricate a pH-sensitive multifunctional fabric integrated with controllable wettability, good mechanical durability as well as outstanding reusability. Based on such fabric with a variety of outstanding properties, it can be utilized to separate various oil-water mixtures. For instance, two separation devices (vertical-type and T-type) have been designed to successfully separate diverse oil/water mixtures by gravity driving and wettability change, showing high permeation flux and excellent separation efficiency. Meanwhile, it can also preserve the ability to separate in situ rapidly multiple oil/water/oil mixtures. More importantly, by right of as-prepared superwetting fabric, a device that can not only capture oil slicks on the water surface, but also capture oil under the water has been designed with splendid separation efficiency, providing a new design idea for the offshore oil spills. Moreover, it is amusing that the obtained superwetting fabric is capable of separating immiscible organic solvents. Impressively, the obtained fabric also preserves the capacity in separating in situ phenol from mixed organic system through chemical reaction. Consequently, in view of the diversified characters and wide application of the resulted fabric, it has an extensive application prospect in diverse industries, especially in the oil-water separation.

Abstract:Oil/water separation is an important field, not only for scientific research but also for practical applications aiming to resolve industrial oily wastewater and oil-spill pollution, as well as environmental protection. Recently, research into the role of special wettability for oil/water separation has attracted much attention. In this review we summarize the design, fabrication, applications and recent developments of special wettable materials for oil/water separation. Based on the different types of separation, we organize this review into three parts: "oil-removing" type materials with superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity (that selectively filter or absorb oil from oil/water mixtures), "water-removing" type materials with superhydrophilicity and superoleophobicity (that selectively separate water from oil/water mixtures), and smart controllable separation materials. In each section, we present in detail the representative work, introduce the design idea, outline their fabrication methods, and discuss the role of special wettability on the separation. Finally, the challenges and outlook for the future of this subject are discussed.

Abstract:The industrial revolution has led to a frequent leakage of crude oil into marine waters and the contamination of wastewater with various oils and organic liquids. Therefore, the development of multifunctional materials for oil/ water separation is a fast-growing research area for the remediation of oil-polluted water. Separation processes based on advanced superwetting materials have been proposed as a novel and smart nonconventional technology for oily wastewater treatment. This review focuses on the fabrication of superwetting cotton textile materials for water/oil separation. The principles of selective water/oil separation including the wettability models, separation mechanism, and separation modes are highlighted. Two types of superwetting materials are presented including superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic cotton fabrics for the separation of various immiscible and emulsified oil/water mixtures. The discussion of this review focuses on the fabrication process in terms of (a) modification of surface roughness, and (b) surface energy to achieve the superwetting performance. The performance of the modified superwetting cotton textiles was highlighted in terms of their wetting behaviour, durability, separation efficiency, intrusion pressure, and recyclability. Smart cotton fabrics with controllable and switchable wettability are presented including the pH-responsive, thermo-responsive, photo-responsive, dual-responsive, and Janus membranes. The current assessment methods for the evaluation of mechanical and chemical durability are highlighted. Future studies shall focus on the fabrication of cotton textiles with smart, switchable, and controllable wettability as well as the Janus cotton textiles to maximize the utilization of the amphiphilic nature of cotton fabrics and textiles.

Abstract:In recent years, the application and fabrication technologies of superwetting materials in the field of oil–water separation have become a research hotspot, aiming to address challenges in marine oil spill response and oily wastewater treatment. Simultaneously, the fabrication technologies and related applications of superwetting materials have been increasingly diversified. This paper systematically reviews the sources and hazards of oily wastewater and oil–water emulsions, several traditional oil–water separation methods, and their limitations, thereby highlighting the advantages of superwetting materials. Additionally, this paper provides an overview of the fundamental theories of wetting and conducts a microanalysis of the penetration mechanism based on Laplace pressure at the gas–liquid–solid three-phase interface. Following this, the latest advances in superwetting oil–water separation materials are elucidated, focusing on five categories: (i) superhydrophobic–superoleophilic materials; (ii) superhydrophilic–underwater superoleophobic materials; (iii) superhydrophobic–superoleophobic materials; (iv) "special" superwetting materials; and (v) smart switchable superwetting materials. This paper innovatively discusses these materials from the perspectives of two-dimensional and three-dimensional materials, deeply studying the mechanisms of oil–water separation and using data to quantify the separation efficiency. Comparative discussions are conducted on the materials from various dimensions, including different substrates, innovations in existing technologies, and fabrication methods as discussed in various articles, followed by corresponding summaries. Finally, the existing shortcomings and challenges of current superwetting materials are summarized, and prospects are proposed. We firmly believe that developing low-cost, stable, environmentally friendly, and practical large-scale superwetting oil–water separation materials will have broad application prospects and potential in the future.

Abstract:Human activities are producing increasing amounts of oily water. Therefore, methods for oil/water separation are attracting great attention. Membranes, including nanofibers for oil/water separation based on superwetting surfaces have advantages of low cost, high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. In addition to the common superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic surfaces, other novel superwetting membranes have been developed for oil/water separation. This review introduces and discusses membranes and nanofibers reported in recent years for oil/water separation, with emphasis on coupling the wettability characteristics with the structural features. We mainly discuss five types of membranes with superwetting surfaces. In each category, representative research, manufacturing technology, membrane structure, and applications are discussed in detail. Finally, the challenges and future opportunities for superwetting membranes in the field of oil/water separation are put forward.

Abstract:Developing advanced superwetting oil/water separation materials with controlled wettability, excellent selectivity and sustainable separation is a persistent pursuit for researchers. Recently, smart materials have been highly anticipated to enable sustainable treatment of oil spills and oily wastewater. According to the different response mechanisms, smart materials are mainly divided into stimuli-responsive and prewetting-induced types. The stimuli-responsive smart materials can reversibly switch interfacial wettability between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity in accordance with external stimulus. Instead, prewetting-induced smart materials can realize on-demand oil/water separation without continuous external stimulus, as the responses are only water or oil which can be obtained directly from oil/water mixtures. Even though most of smart materials have exhibited remarkable potential in sustainably solving oil leakage and purifying oily wastewater, such extremely significant and crucial research advancements are rarely summarized and reported in recent literatures. Herein, an in-depth discussion and systematic summary of the work done so far in the development of smart materials for oil/water separation is presented. Firstly, the fundamental theories of special wettability, the mechanism of oil/water separation, and the "oil-removing" materials and "water-removing" materials with single wettability are discoursed, respectively. Then, the Janus materials with asymmetrical wettability are also discussed. Particularly, the current developments of smart materials with switchable wettability are emphatically reviewed, such as the preparation principle, main responsive factors, representative work, design idea, fabrication strategies, and the role of special wettability on the oil/water separation. Finally, a comprehensive summary and future outlook of smart materials is provided, including their advantages and disadvantages, the remaining challenges, and prospects for the future of such subject. It is convinced that the comprehensive overview will provide a fresh understanding and important guiding for future research on smart oil/water separation materials.

Abstract:The separation of oil/water mixtures has become a major problem worldwide as oil spills and the discharge of oily wastewater. Materials with special wettable surfaces have been developed over the past decades to separate oil and water efficiently. Compared to conventional superoleophilic "oil removal" materials, superhydrophilic "water removal" materials have been favored by researchers for their better performance. Among them, three-dimensional (3D) porous materials have higher oil/water separation flux than two-dimensional (2D) materials, and their unique structure allows them to be applied to separate various oily wastewater. Therefore, 3D superhydrophilic porous materials have been widely manufactured and applied to oil/water separation. In this paper, we first introduced the theoretical model of oil/water separation and then described in detail the currently fabricated superhydrophilic sponges, foams, hydrogels, and aerogels from three types of substrate materials: organic, inorganic, and organic–inorganic co-hybrid. We mainly described the preparation methods, surface wettability, oil/water separation properties, and other properties each material possesses. We also identified and clarified the relationships and inconsistencies among the materials. Finally, we discussed and summarized the advantages and disadvantages of various types of 3D superhydrophilic porous materials, as well as some problems and challenges faced, and provided an outlook on their future development.

Abstract:Frequent offshore oil spill accidents , industrial oily sewage and the indiscriminate disposal of urban oily sewage have increasingly serious impacts on human living environment and health. The traditional oil-water separation methods not only cause easily environmental secondary pollution, but also lead to waste of limited resources. Therefore , how to efficiently and environmentally solve the problem of oily sewage has great significance. Physical filtration/adsorption is considered to be an efficient and environmentally friendly separation method. Based on bionics principle, many superoleophilic hydrophobic materials and superhydrophilic oleophobic materials which can be used for selectively physical oil-water separation have been prepared. The superoleophilic hydrophobic materials are easy to be polluted by oil, resulting in low reuse ability. In contrast, environment-friendly and self-cleaning superhydrophilic oleophobic materials usually have high reuse ability , thus having broad application prospects for oil-water separation. Based on the difference of base materials, the present paper mainly statues the recent advances and summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of metal and polymer-based superhydrophilic oleophobic materials, and the general direction and emphasis of superhydrophilic oleophobic materials are also proposed.

Abstract:Clean water resources are essential to our human society. Oil leakage has caused water contamination, which leads to serious shortage of clean water, environmental deterioration, and even increasing number of deaths. It is of great urgency to solve the oil-polluted water problems worldwide. Efficient oil/water separation, especially emulsified oil/water mixture separation, is widely used to mitigate water pollution issues. Recently, advanced materials with special wettability have been employed for oily wastewater remediation. Moreover, by endowing them with various intelligent functions, smart materials can effectively separate complex oil/water mixtures including extremely stable emulsions. In this review, oil/water separation mechanisms and various fabrication methods of special wettability separation materials are summarized. We highlight the special wettable materials with intelligent functions, including photocatalytic, self-healing, and switchable oil/water separation materials, which can achieve self-cleaning, self-healing, and efficient oily wastewater treatment. In each section, the acting mechanisms, fabricating technologies, representative studies, and separation efficiency are briefly introduced. Abstract:Clean water resources are crucial for human society, as the leakage and discharge of oily wastewater not only harm the economy but also disrupt our living environment. Therefore, there is an urgent need for efficient oil-water separation technology. Surfaces with switchable superwetting behavior have garnered significant attention due to their importance in both fundamental research and practical applications. This review introduces the fundamental principles of wettability in the oil-water separation process, the basic theory of switchable wettability, and the mechanisms involved in oil-water separation. Subsequently, the review discusses the research progress, challenges, and issues associated with three conventional types of special wettability materials: superhydrophobic/superoleophilic materials, superhydrophilic/superoleophobic materials, and superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic materials. Most importantly, it provides a detailed exploration of recent advancements in switchable wettability smart materials, which combine elements of traditional special wettability materials. These include stimulus-responsive smart materials, pre-wetting-induced materials, and Janus materials. The discussion covers key response factors, detailed examples of representative works, design concepts, and fabrication strategies. Finally, the review offers a comprehensive summary of switchable superwetting smart materials, encompassing their advantages and disadvantages, persistent challenges, and future prospects.

Abstract:In the title compound, [Cd(C8H4N8)(H2O)4]n, 5,5′-(1,4-phenylene)di(tetrazol-2-ide) (L) ligands bridge CdII atoms into polymeric chains along [201]. The CdII atom is situated on an inversion centre and is coordinated by two N atoms from two L ligands and by four water O atoms in a distorted octahedral geometry. In the L ligand, the benzene ring resides on an inversion centre and the tetrazole rings are twisted from its plane by 22.3 (1)°. An extensive hydrogen-bonding network formed by classical O—H⋯N and O—H⋯O interactions consolidates the crystal packing, linking the poymeric chains into a three-dimensional structure.

Abstract:Oily wastewater generated by industrial production and marine oil spill accidents has caused great damage to the environment and human health. The development of superhydrophobic materials prepared from natural resources for oil/water separation is of great significance. In this work, a bio-based modified fabric for oil/water separation was prepared by coating SiO2 and eleostearic acid (EA) on cotton fabric. Due to the rough surface provided by SiO2 and the low-surface-energy EA, the eleostearic acid-SiO2@cotton fabric (EA-SiO2@CF) displayed durable superhydrophobicity even under various harsh environments. The acid-stable SiO2 particles and EA molecules endowed the modified cotton fabric with resistance to high concentrations of strong acid. EA-SiO2@CF also showed pH-responsive behavior, converting between superhydrophobic and superhydrophilic states by ammonia treatment and immersion in EA solution. The superhydrophobic EA-SiO2@CF was used to separate various immiscible oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized (oil-in-water and water-in-oil) emulsions with high separation efficiencies of about 99.5%. This work provides an easy strategy to prepare an environmentally friendly superhydrophobic material which can be applied to the treatment of oily wastewater, anti-corrosion protection, and intelligent response.

A Review on Oil/Water Mixture Separation Material

Abstract:Frequent oil spill accidents and leakage of organic solvent destroy aquatic ecosystems and threaten marine lives. Separation of the oily pollutant from water with material has long been treated as an effective and environmentally friendly solution. As a result, great efforts have been made to construct a material with high oil adsorption capacity, high oil–water separation efficiency, high oil–water selectivity, and superior recyclability. Surface chemical composition and surface topography are two key factors that determine the surface wettability and oil–water separation efficiency of a material. In this review, we summarize the popular oil–water separation materials during the past five years, including adsorption material, filtration material, and smart controllable special wettable separation material. Before that, a basic theory of surface specific wettability is introduced. The perspectives and challenges of each material are also highlighted.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
Fabrication of Durable Superhydrophobic Surface for Versatile Oil/Water Separation Based on HDTMS Modified PPy/ZnO

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have been widely applied in rapid removal and collection of oils from oil/water mixtures for increasing damage to environment and human beings caused by oil-contaminated wastewater and oil spills. Herein, superhydrophobic materials were fabricated by a novel polypyrrole (PPy)/ZnO coating followed by hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) modification for versatile oil/water separation with high environmental and excellent reusability. The prepared superhydrophobic surfaces exhibited water contact angle (WCA) greater than 150° and SA less than 5°. The superhydrophobic fabric could be applied for separation of heavy oil or light oil/water mixtures and emulsions with the separation efficiencies above 98%. The coated fabric also realized highly efficient separation with harsh environmental solutions, such as acid, alkali, salt, and hot water. The superhydrophobic fabric still remained, even after 80 cycles of separation and 12 months of storage in air, proving excellent durability. These novel superhydrophobic materials have indicated great development potentials for oil/water separation in practical applications.

Abstract:The complexity and diversity of oily wastewater calls for versatile and efficient separation of emulsified oil/water mixtures. Herein, a facile method is applied to fabricate superhydrophobic cotton fabric for highly efficient separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water mixtures. The fabric was prepared by repeated dip-coating of the pretreated cotton fabric in a dispersion containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and epoxy resin E-44 (ER). This strategy could avoid not only the conventionally sophisticated fabrication process but also the usage of expensive low energy materials involved in preparing superhydrophobic materials. The modified cotton fabric exhibited remarkable separation of surfactant stabilized water-in-oil emulsion with a separation efficiency beyond 99%. Moreover, the superhydrophobic cotton fabric showed excellent chemical stability and mechanical durability. In addition, it could be applied to different types of emulsions prepared from various oils and emulsions with different water content, showcasing promising potential for practical water treatment.
