Abstract:The purpose of this thesis is to make an analysis of the concept of Hypercomputation and of some hypermachines. This thesis is separated in three main parts. We start in the first chapter with an analysis of the concept of Classical Computability with the Turing Machine and the Church-Turing thesis as a main reference and afterwards, in the second chapter, we continue with an analysis of hypercomputation and some hypermachines. Attention is given to the possible physical realization of these machines and their usefulness. In the third chapter a superficial introduction to Quantum Computing is made and a brief analysis to a quantum hypercomputational model, Tien D. Kieu's Adiabatic Quantum Computing.

Hyperarithmetical Complexity of Infinitary Action Logic with Multiplexing

Abstract:In 2023, Kuznetsov and Speranski introduced infinitary action logic with multiplexing $!^m\nabla \mathrm{ACT}_\omega$ and proved that the derivability problem for it lies between the $\omega$ and $\omega^\omega$ levels of the hyperarithmetical hierarchy. We prove that this problem is $\Delta^0_{\omega^\omega}$-complete under Turing reductions. Namely, we show that it is recursively isomorphic to the satisfaction predicate for computable infinitary formulas of rank less than $\omega^\omega$ in the language of arithmetic. As a consequence we prove that the closure ordinal for $!^m\nabla \mathrm{ACT}_\omega$ equals $\omega^\omega$. We also prove that the fragment of $!^m\nabla \mathrm{ACT}_\omega$ where Kleene star is not allowed to be in the scope of the subexponential is $\Delta^0_{\omega^\omega}$-complete. Finally, we present a family of logics, which are fragments of $!^m\nabla \mathrm{ACT}_\omega$, such that the complexity of the $k$-th logic lies between $\Delta^0_{\omega^k}$ and $\Delta^0_{\omega^{k+1}}$.

Towards a Scalable Proof Engine: A Performant Prototype Rewriting Primitive for Coq

Abstract:We address the challenges of scaling verification efforts to match the increasing complexity and size of systems. We propose a research agenda aimed at building a performant proof engine by studying the asymptotic performance of proof engines and redesigning their building blocks. As a case study, we explore equational rewriting and introduce a novel prototype proof engine building block for rewriting in Coq, utilizing proof by reflection for enhanced performance. Our prototype implementation can significantly improve the development of verified compilers, as demonstrated in a case study with the Fiat Cryptography toolchain. The resulting extracted command-line compiler is about 1000$\times$ faster while featuring simpler compiler-specific proofs. This work lays some foundation for scaling verification efforts and contributes to the broader goal of developing a proof engine with good asymptotic performance, ultimately aimed at enabling the verification of larger and more complex systems.

Abstract:Virtual integration techniques focus on building architectural models of systems that can be analyzed early in the design cycle to try to lower cost, reduce risk, and improve quality of complex embedded systems. Given appropriate architectural descriptions, assume/guarantee contracts, and compositional reasoning rules, these techniques can be used to prove important safety properties about the architecture prior to system construction. For these proofs to be meaningful, each leaf-level component contract must be realizable; i.e., it is possible to construct a component such that for any input allowed by the contract assumptions, there is some output value that the component can produce that satisfies the contract guarantees. We have recently proposed (in [1]) a contract-based realizability checking algorithm for assume/guarantee contracts over infinite theories supported by SMT solvers such as linear integer/real arithmetic and uninterpreted functions. In that work, we used an SMT solver and an algorithm similar to k-induction to establish the realizability of a contract, and justified our approach via a hand proof. Given the central importance of realizability to our virtual integration approach, we wanted additional confidence that our approach was sound. This paper describes a complete formalization of the approach in the Coq proof and specification language. During formalization, we found several small mistakes and missing assumptions in our reasoning. Although these did not compromise the correctness of the algorithm used in the checking tools, they point to the value of machine-checked formalization. In addition, we believe this is the first machine-checked formalization for a realizability algorithm.

HMC: Verifying Functional Programs Using Abstract Interpreters

Abstract:We present Hindley-Milner-Cousots (HMC), an algorithm that reduces verification of safety properties of typed higher-order functional programs to interprocedural analysis for first-order imperative programs. HMC works as follows. First, it uses the type structure of the functional program to generate a set of logical refinement constraints whose satisfaction implies the safety of the source program. Next, it transforms the logical refinement constraints into a simple first-order imperative program and an invariant that holds iff the constraints are satisfiable. Finally, it uses an invariant generator for first-order imperative programs to discharge the invariant. We have implemented HMC and describe preliminary experimental results using two imperative checkers – armc and interproc – to verify ocaml programs. By composing type-based reasoning grounded in program syntax and state-based reasoning grounded in abstract interpretation, HMC enables the fully automatic verification of programs written in modern programming languages.

Abstract:We exploit (co)inductive specifications and proofs to approach the evaluation of low-level programs for the Unlimited Register Machine (URM) within the Coq system, a proof assistant based on the Calculus of (Co)Inductive Constructions type theory. Our formalization allows us to certify the implementation of partial functions, thus it can be regarded as a first step towards the development of a workbench for the formal analysis and verification of both converging and diverging computations.

A Hypergraph-based Formalization of Hierarchical Reactive Modules and a Compositional Verification Method

Abstract:The compositional approach is important for reasoning about large and complex systems. In this work, we address synchronous systems with hierarchical structures, which are often used to model cyber-physical systems. We revisit the theory of reactive modules and reformulate it based on hypergraphs to clarify the parallel composition and the hierarchical description of modules. Then, we propose an automatic verification method for hierarchical systems. Given a system description annotated with assume-guarantee contracts, the proposed method divides the system into modules and verifies them separately to show that the top-level system satisfies its contract. Our method allows an input to be a circular system in which submodules mutually depend on each other. Experimental result shows our method can be effectively implemented using an SMT-based model checker.

Abstract:Current methods for verifying quantum computers are predominately based on interactive or automatic theorem provers. Considering that quantum computers are dynamical in nature, this paper employs and extends the concepts from the verification of dynamical systems to verify properties of quantum circuits. Our main contribution is to propose k-inductive barrier certificates over complex variables and show how to compute them using Hermitian Sum of Squares optimization. We apply this new technique to verify properties of different quantum circuits.

Abstract:A common technique for checking properties of complex state machines is to build a finite abstraction then check the property on the abstract system -- where a passing check on the abstract system is only transferred to the original system if the abstraction is proven to be representative. This approach does require the derivation or definition of the finite abstraction, but can avoid the need for complex invariant definition. For our work in checking progress of memory transactions in microprocessors, we need to prove that transactions in complex state machines always make progress to completion. As a part of this effort, we developed a process for computing a finite abstract graph of the target state machine along with annotations on whether certain measures decrease or not on arcs in the abstract graph. We then iteratively divide the abstract graph by splitting into strongly connected components and then building a measure for every node in the abstract graph which is ensured to be reducing on every transition of the original system guaranteeing progress. For finite state target systems (e.g. hardware designs), we present approaches for extracting the abstract graph efficiently using incremental SAT through GL and then the application of our process to check for progress. We present an implementation of the Bakery algorithm as an example application.

Abstract:Theorem proving has been demonstrated as a powerful technique for datapath verification. This paper considers a generic logic-level architecture of end-around-carry adder, which is extensively used in floating-point arithmetic. The architecture is component-based and parameterized for easy customization. The design architecture is formalized and verified in the mechanical theorem prover Coq. The scalable proof provides necessary underpinnings for verifying customized and new implementations.
Compact Proofs of Model Performance via Mechanistic Interpretability

Abstract:In this work, we propose using mechanistic interpretability -- techniques for reverse engineering model weights into human-interpretable algorithms -- to derive and compactly prove formal guarantees on model performance. We prototype this approach by formally proving lower bounds on the accuracy of 151 small transformers trained on a Max-of-$K$ task. We create 102 different computer-assisted proof strategies and assess their length and tightness of bound on each of our models. Using quantitative metrics, we find that shorter proofs seem to require and provide more mechanistic understanding. Moreover, we find that more faithful mechanistic understanding leads to tighter performance bounds. We confirm these connections by qualitatively examining a subset of our proofs. Finally, we identify compounding structureless noise as a key challenge for using mechanistic interpretability to generate compact proofs on model performance.

Abstract:Despite many advances that enable the application of model checking techniques to the verification of large systems, the state-explosion problem remains the main challenge for scalability. Compositional verification addresses this challenge by decomposing the verification of a large system into the verification of its components. Recent techniques use learning-based approaches to automate compositional verification based on the assume-guarantee style reasoning. However, these techniques are only applicable to finite-state systems. In this work, we propose a new framework that interleaves abstraction and learning to perform automated compositional verification of infinite-state systems. We also discuss the role of learning and abstraction in the related context of interface generation for infinite-state components.

Incremental Proof Development in Dafny with Module-Based Induction

Abstract:Highly automated theorem provers like Dafny allow users to prove simple properties with little effort, making it easy to quickly sketch proofs. The drawback is that such provers leave users with little control about the proof search, meaning that the small changes inherent to the iterative process of writing a proof often lead to unpredictable variations in verification time, and eventually hard-to-diagnose proof failures. This sometimes turns the boon of high automation into a curse, as instead of breaking early and showing unsolved goals to the user like in Coq, proofs tend to gradually become unstable until their verification time explodes. At this point, the absence of a proof context to investigate often leaves the user to a painful debugging session. In this paper, we show how to use Dafny modules to encode Coq-like induction principles to dramatically improve the stability and maintainability of proofs about inductive data structures.

Abstract:It is by now well established that quantum machines can solve certain computational problems much faster than the best algorithms known in the standard Turing machine model. The complexity question of which problems can be feasibly computed by quantum machines has also been extensively investigated in recent years, both in the context of one machine models (quantum polynomial classes) and various flavors of multi-machine models (single and multiple prover quantum interactive proofs). In this talk we examine the more general (but less theoretically investigated) question of which quantum states can be feasibly computed. Specifically, we will focus on the question of what quantum states can be generated by quantum interactive proofs. We will show that several classical interactive proof theorems have analogs in such models. For example, we show that any quantum state computable in quantum polynomial space has a 2-prover quantum interactive proof. Open questions will be discussed.

Abstract:We present the first known solution to the original supertask, the Thomson Lamp Paradox. We also offer preliminary resources for classifying computational complexity of various supertasks. In so doing we consider a newly apparent paradox between the metrical limit and the ordinal limit. We use this distinction between the metrical and ordinal limits to explain the shortcomings both of Thomson's original formulation of the Lamp Paradox and Benacerraf's consequent critique. We resolve this paradox through a careful consideration of transfinite ordinals and locate its ambiguity as inherent to the identity relation under logic with a close reading of Frege's Begriffsschrift. With this close reading in hand we expose how the identity relation is counter-intuitively polyvalent and, with supertasks, how the logico-mathematical field operates on the basis of Deleuzian point-folds. Our results combine resources from philosophy, mathematics, and computer science to ground the field of hypercomputation for logically rigorous study.

Abstract:Essential tasks for the verification of probabilistic programs include bounding expected outcomes and proving termination in finite expected runtime. We contribute a simple yet effective inductive synthesis approach for proving such quantitative reachability properties by generating inductive invariants on source-code level . Our implementation shows promise: It finds invariants for (in)finite-state programs, can beat state-of-the-art probabilistic model checkers, and is competitive with modern tools dedicated to invariant synthesis and expected runtime reasoning.

Abstract:Following an early work of Dwork and Stockmeyer on interactive proof systems whose verifiers are two-way probabilistic finite automata, the authors initiated in 2004 a study on the computational power of quantum interactive proof systems whose verifiers are particularly limited to quantum finite automata. As a follow-up to the authors' early journal publication [J. Comput. System Sci., vol.75, pp.255-269, 2009], we further investigate the quantum nature of interactions between provers and verifiers by studying how various restrictions on quantum interactive proof systems affect the language recognition power of the proof systems. In particular, we examine three intriguing restrictions that (i) provers always behave in a classical fashion, (ii) verifiers always reveal to provers the information on next moves, and (iii) the number of interactions between provers and verifiers is bounded.
