Abstract:In this paper, we study the stabilization and finite-time stabilization of probabilistic Boolean control networks (PBCNs). A complete family of reachable sets is defined first, based on which, feedback stabilization conditions are obtained. Then a way to find all possible state feedback controllers are presented for the stabilization of PBCNs accordingly. Moreover, it has been stated that the approach in this paper can also be applied to finite-time stabilization via some changes in the construction of set sequence. Finally, an evolutionary networked game is given as an example to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:In this article, the problem of robust exponential stability and reliable stabilisation for a class of continuous-time networked control systems (NCSs) with a sample-data controller and unknown time-varying sampling rate is considered. The analysis is based on average dwell-time, Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique. The delay-dependent criteria are developed for ensuring the robust exponential stability of the considered NCSs. The obtained conditions are formulated in terms of LMIs that can easily be solved by using standard software packages. Furthermore, the result is extended to study the robust stabilisation for NCS with parameter uncertainties. A state feedback controller is constructed in terms of the solution to a set of LMIs, which guarantee the robust exponential stabilisation of NCS and the controller. Finally, numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Abstract:Sampled-data state feedback control with stochastic sampling periods for Boolean control networks (BCNs) is investigated in this article. First, based on the algebraic form of BCNs, stochastic sampled-data state feedback control is applied to stabilize the considered system to a fixed point or a given set. Two kinds of distributions of stochastic sampling periods are considered. First, the distribution of sampling periods is assumed to be independent identically distributed (i.i.d.) in the range of any positive integers and the second distribution of sampling periods is assumed to follow an infinite Markov process. A BCN with infinite stochastic sampling periods proves to be equivalent to a finite stochastic switched system, based on which, necessary and sufficient conditions are given to guarantee the stabilization and set stabilization of the BCN with stochastic sampling periods. For the first one, two algorithms are given to guarantee the stabilization and set stabilization of the considered system. For the second one, necessary and sufficient conditions are all presented in the linear programming form. Examples are listed to show the effectiveness of our results.

Abstract:This paper includes some results of switched Boolean control networks. The switched signals considered in this paper is time variant and it follows a certain probabilistic distribution vector. Given a concept of stabilization with stochastic switched signals, we obtained a necessary and sufficient condition for stabilization. Then a state feedback control depending on switched signals is designed to stabilize the system considered. Later we investigate a case when the switched signal θ(t) is unknown at time t, and what we have is the prediction switched signal ∧θ(t). For a given prediction matrix, a necessary and sufficient condition is given to preserve the stabilization. Except state feedback control, asynchronous pinning control for switched Boolean networks (BNs) is also considered. A necessary and sufficient condition is extended for the stability of BNs with stochastic switched signals. Moreover, algorithms are presented to find the minimal number of pinned nodes based on controlling minimal number of subsystems. Examples are shown to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Abstract:Using semitensor products (STPs) of matrices, sampled-data state-feedback control (SDSFC) with the Lebesgue sampling region Sτ is first considered to stabilize a Boolean control network (BCN) to a fixed point, under which a necessary and sufficient condition for stabilization is obtained when the considered BCN with the Lebesgue sampling region is converted to a switching system. Meanwhile, the corresponding asynchronous SDSFC gains are designed from a sequence of reachable sets. Then, an algorithm is shown to obtain the minimal number of controlling times and all states globally stabilize to the desired state with the fastest convergence rate under the minimal number of controlling times. Besides, the results have been extended to p Lebesgue sampling regions Sτi, i=1,2,…, p . And some results are presented for this situation, including the necessary and sufficient conditions stabilization under the p Lebesgue sampling regions, the asynchronous SDSFC gains, and the algorithm to obtain the optimal states sampling regions. Examples are listed to show the effectiveness of our results, and the biological example indicates that the SDSFC with Lebesgue sampling is also suitable for stochastic BCNs.

Abstract:This article investigates the set stabilization of probabilistic Boolean control networks (PBCNs) under sampled-data (SD) state-feedback control within finite and infinite time, respectively. First, the algorithms are, respectively, proposed to find the sampled point set and the largest sampled point control invariant set (SPCIS) of PBCNs by SD state-feedback control. Based on this, a necessary and sufficient criterion is proposed for the global set stabilization of PBCNs by SD state-feedback control within finite time. Moreover, the time-optimal SD state-feedback controller is designed. It is interesting that if the sampled period (SP) is changed, the time of global set stabilization of PBCNs may also change or even the PBCNs cannot achieve set stabilization. Second, a criterion for the global set stabilization of PBCNs by SD state-feedback control within infinite time is obtained. Furthermore, all possible SD state-feedback controllers are obtained by using all the complete families of reachable sets. Finally, three examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Abstract:In this paper, we focus on the topic of stabilizing the Boolean control network (BCN) by an optimal event-triggered feedback control. By routinely transforming the BCN into its algebraic form, constructing the (reverse) weighted digraph and the hypergraph for the BCN, applying the shortest path algorithm to the hypergraph, we obtain an optimal event-triggered control strategy that can stabilize the BCN starting from any given initial state to a priorly-specified approachable equilibrium and simultaneously can minimize a quality index combining control time with control variability. To avoid the case where the obtained optimal strategy is dependent on the initial state, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for finding a unified control law which can steer the BCN starting from all initial states to the given equilibrium with a minimal quality index. Furthermore, all the existence results are extended further to the BCNs under the control laws of event-triggered delayed state feedback, event-triggered output feedback, and the event-triggered delayed output feedback. Particularly, the control law of event-triggered delayed feedback can cope with the optimization problem that the unified control law without delay cannot address. Additionally, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition under which the event-triggered state (resp., output) feedback control law degenerates into the conventional state (resp., output) feedback control law. Finally, we provide an illustrative example of biological significance to demonstrate the potential usefulness of the obtained analytical results.
Time-optimal open-loop set stabilization of Boolean control networks

Abstract:We show that for stabilization of Boolean control networks (BCNs) with unobservable initial states, open-loop control and close-loop control are not equivalent. An example is given to illustrate the nonequivalence. Enlightened by the nonequivalence, we explore open-loop set stabilization of BCNs with unobservable initial states. More specifically, this issue is to investigate that for a given BCN, whether there exists a unified free control sequence that is effective for all initial states of the system to stabilize the system states to a given set. The criteria for open-loop set stabilization is derived and for any open-loop set stabilizable BCN, every time-optimal open-loop set stabilizer is proposed. Besides, we obtain the least upper bounds of two integers, which are respectively related to the global stabilization and partial stabilization of BCNs in the results of two literature articles. Using the methods in the two literature articles, the least upper bounds of the two integers cannot be obtained.

Abstract:We consider three related problems for stabilization of a class of Lipschitz nonlinear systems: (1) full-state feedback controller design, (2) observer design, and (3) output feedback controller design. Sufficient conditions are developed for the design of an exponentially stable linear full-state feedback controller and an exponentially stable nonlinear observer. Given that the sufficient conditions of the controller and observer problem are satisfied, we show that the proposed controller with estimated state feedback from the proposed observer will achieve exponential stabilization. Simulation results on an example are given to numerically verify the proposed designs.
Robust Set Stabilization of Boolean Control Networks: an Efficient Approach based on Reverse Set Propagation

Abstract:This paper investigates the robust set stabilization of nondeterministic Boolean control networks (BCNs) subject to random disturbance inputs. Although this problem has been previously addressed in the literature, we propose an alternative approach primarily to decrease the computational complexity of the algorithms. Our technique is inspired by the set propagation technique in reachability analysis but is applied in reverse order, identifying all the layered sets of states that reach a target set in a specific order. Two algorithms are developed: the first determines the largest robust control invariant subset, while the second handles time-optimal robust set stabilization using the results from the first algorithm. In particular, all time-invariant state feedback gain matrices are identified. Our approach achieves the lowest computational complexity ever known, even lower than the current methods designed solely for deterministic set stabilization without any disturbances. Numerical simulations with two biological networks demonstrate the significantly reduced processing time of our algorithms. Overall, this study presents a new approach for robust set stabilization with improved efficiency, capable of handling relatively large BCNs beyond the capabilities of existing techniques.

Abstract:In this paper, the stabilization problem of the Boolean network (BN) with stochastic disturbances via pinning control has been investigated. The necessary and sufficient conditions are given for robust stabilization of a BN with stochastic disturbances. Then, pinning control is considered to stabilize a BN with stochastic disturbances. An algorithm is given to obtain a new stable system and the pinning control, including the pinned nodes, control design, and control adding, is also solved. Finding the minimal number of pinned nodes is further analyzed. The necessary and sufficient conditions are obtained for the solvability of pinning control, based on which some matrices sets are constructed which leads to the necessary and sufficient conditions of pinning t nodes. Furthermore, an algorithm is introduced to search the minimal number of pinned nodes and what exactly they are, which will reduce the computational burden. Examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:In this article, the $l_{1}$ -induced performance of the stochastic switched Boolean control network (BCN) is investigated. The switched signal is considered to follow a time-varying probability distribution, the switching of which is considered to have a random dwell time. The asynchronous state feedback control (SFC) is studied to achieve the control objective. This kind of control can avoid the failure of the control due to the inconsistency between the system mode and the control mode, so the results obtained are more general. Using the semitensor product of matrices, the algebraic form of the considered BCN is represented. Under this framework, sufficient conditions are obtained to ensure that the closed-loop system is stochastic stabilized with a prescribed $l_{1}$ -induced performance level $\gamma $ . Parameters can be solved by inequalities. In addition, when the dwell time converges to infinity, the probability distribution of the switched signal becomes fixed. Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented to ensure the stabilization of the closed system under asynchronous SFC as well as the design of the asynchronous SFC. Then, sufficient condition is obtained for the prescribed $l_{1}$ -induced performance level. Examples are presented to show the effectiveness of the obtained results.

Abstract:A probabilistic Boolean network (PBN) is a discrete-time system composed of a family of Boolean networks (BNs) between which the PBN switches in a stochastic fashion. Studying control-related problems in PBNs may provide new insights into the intrinsic control in biological systems and enable us to develop strategies for manipulating complex biological systems using exogenous inputs. This paper investigates the problem of state feedback stabilization for PBNs. Based on the algebraic representation of logic functions, a necessary and sufficient condition is derived for the existence of a globally stabilizing state feedback controller, and a control design method is proposed when the presented condition holds. It is shown that the controller designed via the proposed procedure can simultaneously stabilize a collection of PBNs that are composed of the same constituent BNs.
Stabilization of Delayed Boolean Networks Using Constrained State Pinning Control

Abstract:Pinning control is applied to ensure the stabilization of Boolean networks (BNs) with time delay parameter. The time delay parameter in this article follows an independent identical distribution. Using semi-tensor product of matrices, the considered BN with time delay is converted to a high dimensional switching BN and the switching signal is the time delay signal. Different from general switching BN, the structure matrices of all subsystems are independent with each other, structure matrices of all subsystems for the high dimensional switching BN depend on the original BN structure matrix. Pinning control is designed to guarantee the global stochastic stability of the considered system. Furthermore, the global stochastic stability of BN with time delay parameter is proved to be equivalent to the stability of BN without time delay parameter, which greatly reduces the computational complexity and simplifies the control design. For the considered BN with finite cycles, constrained pinning control is applied with limitation that only one state of each undesired cycle is under control. With this constraint, the minimal number of pinning control nodes is further investigated. Some algorithms are presented to obtain the new structure matrix, with which, pinning control can be solved by the obtained methods. Both numerical examples and biological example illustrate the effectiveness of the results.

Abstract:In this paper, the minimum observability of Boolean control networks (BCNs) is investigated. An augmented system is proposed to analyze the dynamical trajectories of state pairs, followed by an effective criterion for observability of BCNs utilizing graphic tools. A minimal observability problem is formulated based on the fact that observability of the underlying network is facilitated by injecting new measurements. By introducing an indicator matrix, the solution of added measurements in vector form can be converted into dealing with the equations, by which, all the feasible measurements can be derived. Furthermore, the solution of the least added measurements can be solved by a minimum set covering problem. Meanwhile, two examples are given to illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper addresses the robust stabilization problem of Boolean control networks with disturbance inputs (DBCNs) via the semi-tensor product (STP) of matrices, and designs all feasible state feedback stabilizers. Based on the algebraic form of DBCNs, some necessary and sufficient conditions are derived for the robust stabilization of DBCNs by Ledley antecedence solution technique. An algorithm is proposed to determine all complete families of robust reachable sets, moreover, all feasible state feedback stabilizers are obtained. Finally, two numerical examples are exploited to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed results as well as the controller design scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the optimal control problem of Boolean control networks (BCNs). An optimal input-state transfer graph (OISTG) is defined for BCNs with cost in every stage. Optimal controllers are designed to minimize (or maximize) a given cost (or payoff) function over finite and/or infinite time horizon. In finite time horizon, a sufficient condition is derived for the optimal control problem, and an algorithm with the method of binary decomposition is proposed. Moreover, we prove the existence of optimal control for discounted problems over an infinite time horizon, and a new algorithm is presented to design corresponding optimal controllers. Compared with some existing methods, the new algorithm with OISTG can be used to reduce both space complexity and computational complexity in finding optimal controllers. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the obtained results.

Abstract:This article investigates the design of pinning controllers for state feedback stabilization of probabilistic Boolean control networks (PBCNs), based on the condensation digraph method. First, two effective algorithms are presented to achieve state feedback stabilization of the considered system from the perspective of condensation digraph. One is to find the desired matrix, and the other is to search for the minimum number of pinned nodes and specific pinned nodes. Then, all the mode-independent pinning controllers can be designed based on the desired matrix and pinned nodes. Several examples are delineated to illustrate the validity of the main results.

Abstract:This paper investigates the finite-time set stabilization of impulsive probabilistic Boolean control networks (IPBCNs) by designing time-variant state feedback control. Based on the semi-tensor product method, the algebraic form is established for the given IPBCNs. Then, a constructive method is proposed to design time-variant state feedback controller for the set stabilization of IPBCNs. In order to reduce the control execution time, a specific method is put forward to construct the event-triggered state feedback control (ETSFC). Furthermore, the obtained results are applied to both state synchronization and output synchronization of master-slave IPBCNs.
