Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT)-inspired drone environment is having a greater influence on daily lives in the form of drone-based smart electricity monitoring, traffic routing, and personal healthcare. However, communication between drones and ground control systems must be protected to avoid potential vulnerabilities and improve coordination among scattered UAVs in the IoT context. In the current paper, a distributed UAV scheme is proposed that uses blockchain technology and a network topology similar to the IoT and cloud server to secure communications during data collection and transmission and reduce the likelihood of attack by maliciously manipulated UAVs. As an alternative to relying on a traditional blockchain approach, a unique, safe, and lightweight blockchain architecture is proposed that reduces computing and storage requirements while keeping privacy and security advantages. In addition, a unique reputation-based consensus protocol is built to assure the dependability of the decentralized network. Numerous types of transactions are established to characterize diverse data access. To validate the presented blockchain-based distributed system, performance evaluations are conducted to estimate the statistical effectiveness in the form of temporal delay, packet flow efficacy, precision, specificity, sensitivity, and security efficiency.
Blockchain-Enhanced UAV Networks for Post-Disaster Communication: A Decentralized Flocking Approach

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have significant potential for agile communication and relief coordination in post-disaster scenarios, particularly when ground infrastructure is compromised. However, efficiently coordinating and securing flocks of heterogeneous UAVs from different service providers poses significant challenges related to privacy, scalability, lightweight consensus protocols, and comprehensive cybersecurity mechanisms. This study introduces a robust blockchain-enabled framework designed to tackle these technical challenges through a combination of consensus protocols, smart contracts, and cryptographic techniques. First, we propose a consortium blockchain architecture that ensures secure and private multi-agency coordination by controlling access and safeguarding the privacy of sensitive data. Second, we develop an optimized hybrid consensus protocol that merges Delegated Proof of Stake and Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (DPOS-PBFT), aiming to achieve an effective balance between efficiency, security, and resilience against node failures. Finally, we introduce decentralized flocking algorithms that facilitate adaptable and autonomous operations among specialized UAV clusters, ensuring critical disaster relief functions under conditions of uncertain connectivity. Comprehensive simulations demonstrate the system achieved linear scaling of throughput up to 500 UAV nodes, with only a 50ms increase in latency from 10 to 500 nodes. The framework maintained high throughput and low latency despite spoofing, denial-of-service (DoS), and tampering attacks, showing strong cyber resilience. Communication latencies were kept under 10ms for diverse UAV operations through self-optimizing network intelligence, with median values around 2-3ms.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Internet of Things (IoT), more and more applications focus on the detection of unmanned areas. With the assistance of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), IoT devices are able to access the network via aerial base stations. These UAV-assisted IoT applications still face security and energy challenges. The open environment of IoT applications makes the application easy to encounter external invasion. Limited energy of UAV results in the limited lifetime of network access. To address these challenges, researches on IoT security and energy efficiency are becoming hotspots. Nevertheless, in the UAV continuous coverage scenario, there is still an enormous potential to improve the security and efficiency of data collection in IoT applications. In this article, blockchain is introduced into the scene of UAV-assisted IoT, and a data collection system considering security and energy efficiency is proposed. In this system, UAV, as an edge data collection node, provides a long-term network access for IoT devices through regular cruises with recharging. By forwarding data and recording transactions, UAVs get charging coins as rewards. UAVs use charging coins to exchange charging time. UAV swarm builds distributed ledgers based on blockchain to resist the invasion of malicious UAV. In order to reduce energy consumption, this article designs an adaptive linear prediction algorithm. Through this algorithm, IoT devices upload prediction model instead of original data to greatly reduce in-network transmissions. Simulation results show that the proposed system can effectively improve the security and efficiency of data collection.
Blockchain-Empowered Immutable and Reliable Delivery Service (BIRDS) Using UAV Networks

Abstract:Exploiting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for delivery services is expected to reduce delivery time and human resource costs. However, the proximity of these UAVs to the ground can make them an ideal target for opportunistic criminals. Consequently, UAVs may be hacked, diverted from their destinations, or used for malicious purposes. Furthermore, as a decentralized (peer-to-peer) technology, the blockchain has immense potential to enable secure, decentralized, and cooperative communication among UAVs. With this goal in mind, we propose the Blockchain-Empowered, Immutable, and Reliable Delivery Service (BIRDS) framework to address data security challenges. BIRDS deploys communication hubs across a scalable network. Following the registration phase of BIRDS, UAV node selection is carried out based on a specific consensus proof-of-competence (PoC), where UAVs are evaluated solely on their credibility. The chosen finalist is awarded a certificate for the BIRDS global order fulfillment system. The simulation results demonstrate that BIRDS requires fewer UAVs compared to conventional solutions, resulting in reduced costs and emissions. The proposed BIRDS framework caters to the requirements of numerous users while necessitating less network traffic and consuming low energy.

Abstract:In the last decade, the popularity of UAVs, colloquially known as drones, has increased tremendously. Nowadays, drones are used in a wide range of use-cases, such as precision agriculture, surveillance, and photography. Many of these use-cases can be made more efficient if multiple UAVs are used cooperatively (i.e., in a swarm). To achieve this, communication between the UAVs is paramount. To ensure communication, many works rely on the existing infrastructure (e.g., 4G). However, in many rural areas, this infrastructure does not exist. In those cases, an ad hoc (Wi-Fi) network is the most adequate alternative. Yet, due to the limited communication range of Wi-Fi, it is not possible to let UAVs in a swarm to communicate over a long distance. To solve this issue a relay approach is necessary. Despite general solutions to relay messages between (mobile) nodes already exist, many UAV swarms rely on master–slave communication. Thus, a specific solution for this type of communication might be more efficient. Hence, in this work, we propose a strategy to efficiently relay messages for UAV swarms adopting the master–slave communication paradigm. Our approach seeks to introduce a very small message overhead to avoid congestion of the network, and to provide more bandwidth for the actual applications of the UAV swarm. We tested our approach using a realistic UAV simulator called ArduSim. Our results show that our approach is capable of detecting all the nodes in the network within a few seconds. Furthermore, we applied our message relay approach on an existing swarm application (where a swarm of UAVs had to follow a mission), and our results show that, now, the communication range of the UAVs can be much larger, without impacting other aspects of the mission (such as flight time).

Abstract:<p>The impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) to our daily life has become bigger than ever, which can be witnessed from smart homes, smart transportation, and smart personal care. With widespread applications of UAVs in IoT contexts such as delivery and military, protecting communications between UAVs and ground control system is needed so as to resist potential vulnerabilities and optimize the coordination between distributed UAVs. In this work, to secure communications during data acquisition and transmission, as well as diminish the probability of attacking by malicious manipulated UAVs, we propose a distributed UAVs scheme harnessing blockchain technology whose network has similar topology to IoT along with cloud server. Instead of directly using the typical blockchain technique which requires expensive computation and high bandwidth overhead, we propose a novel, secure, and lightweight blockchain architecture which mitigates the computation and storage overhead while retaining its privacy and security benefits. Moreover, multiples types of transactions are defined to describe various data access and a novel reputation-based consensus protocol is designed to ensure the reliability of the decentralized network. Finally, performance evaluation demonstrates our blockchain-based distributed scheme is secure and efficient.</p>

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), used primarily for aerial surveying, can monitor control information and carry out stalking tasks connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) using advanced wireless technology. It's limited to short distances where the delicate aerial communication system can share a spectrum with terrestrial systems. Moreover, severe privacy and security concerns are due to the unlicensed broadcasting and wireless UAV transmission networks. Therefore, this paper focus on developing a blockchain-based spectrum trading and sharing system that addresses security concerns and maintains user privacy. Mobile network operators can exchange spectrum without relying on a third party using a Distributed Blockchain Consortium System (DBCS). As a result, data is well-protected from plaintext, stalker, and ciphertext attacks, making it easier to track, manage, and control services. Experimental; results showed that the proposed DBCS outperformed other conventional systems in terms of security and performance.

Abstract:Real-time data gathering, analysis, and reaction are made possible by this information and communication technology system. Data storage is also made possible by it. This is a good move since it enhances the administration and operation services essential to any city's efficient operation. The idea behind "smart cities" is that information and communication technology (ICTs) need to be included in a city's routine activities in order to gather, analyze, and store enormous amounts of data in real-time. This is helpful since it makes managing and governing urban areas easier. The "drone" or "uncrewed aerial vehicle" (UAV), which can carry out activities that ordinarily call for a human driver, serves as an example of this. UAVs could be used to integrate geospatial data, manage traffic, keep an eye on objects, and help in an emergency as part of a smart urban fabric. This study looks at the benefits and drawbacks of deploying UAVs in the conception, development, and management of smart cities. This article describes the importance and advantages of deploying UAVs in designing, developing, and maintaining in smart cities. This article overviews UAV uses types, applications, and challenges. Furthermore, we presented blockchain approaches for addressing the given problems for UAVs in smart research topics and recommendations for improving the security and privacy of UAVs in smart cities. Abstract:Aerial warfare systems in various countries highly expect Swarm Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Flying Adhoc Networks (FANETs) for defense stability. However, swarm UAVs face many challenges, like security breaches, malfunctions, link failures, and handover failures. UAVs can easily malfunction by external threats to create data loss, theft, signal jamming, misrouting, false handover, and location spoofing. Failures in UAV handover principles make overall gradual downtime in FANET. Against these issues, existing UAV protection mechanisms deliver location monitoring mechanisms (graphs and trees), multi-link handover mechanisms, and distributed authentication principles. However, the implantation of recent-day techniques may fail against migrating attacker events executed in electronic warfare systems. The existing security methods need improvements for protecting Multi-UAV layers effectively through end-to-end security principles. For this purpose, a new Reactive Handover Coordination System with Regenerative Blockchain (RHCRB) Principles is proposed that takes novel high-security features specially made for swarm UAVs. The proposed RHCRB implements more crucial distributed functions in each UAV on demand. The executed operations of RHCRB comprise trusted location monitoring schemes (internal and cooperative UAV movements), dynamic location-based cost magnitude calculations, regenerative blockchain principles (authentication of each UAV and active edges), confidential link management principles, secure handover coordination, and on-demand topology management principles. The technical aspects of RHCRB build lightweight and shielded handover principles against airfield vulnerabilities. The proposed model suggests implementing an entirely protected handover environment from node localization to handover events. The inspired technical aspects of RHCRB contribute to the swarm UAV environment through confidentiality using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and distributed authentication (blockchain-based node and edge management) principles to engage protected handover practices. The experimental section of this article has been tested using testbed in FlyNetSim tool for implementing RHCRB and notable recent security techniques such as the Internet of Vehicles with Decentralized Blockchains (IoV-DB), Group Handover for Internet of Defense (GH-IoD), and Handover and Optimized Security Principles for UAVs (HOOPOE). The results obtained by this system show RHCRB's 8% to 14% of betterment than existing techniques through various measures.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have brought numerous potentials to establish flexible and reliable emergency networks in disaster areas when terrestrial communication infrastructures go down. Nevertheless, potential security threats may occur on UAVs during data transmissions due to the untrustful environment and open-access UAV networking. Moreover, UAVs typically have limited battery and computation capacity, making them unaffordable to execute heavy security provisioning operations when carrying out complicated rescue tasks. In this paper, we develop RescueChain, a secure and efficient information sharing scheme for UAV-aided disaster rescue. Specifically, we first implement a lightweight blockchain-based framework to safeguard data sharing under disasters and immutably trace misbehaving entities. A reputation-based consensus protocol is devised to adapt the weakly connected environment with improved consensus efficiency and promoted UAVs’ honest behaviors. Furthermore, we introduce a novel vehicular fog computing based off-chain mechanism by leveraging ground vehicles as moving fog nodes to offload UAVs’ heavy data processing and storage tasks. To optimally stimulate vehicles to share their idle computing resources, we also design a two-layer reinforcement learning based incentive algorithm for UAVs and ground vehicles in the highly dynamic networks. Simulation results show that RescueChain can effectively accelerate consensus process, enhance user payoffs, and reduce delivery latency, compared with representative existing approaches.

Abstract:In hostile and remote environments, such as mountains, forests or suburban areas, traditional communications may not be available, especially after a disaster, such as a flood, a forest fire or an earthquake. In these situations, the wireless networks may become congested or completely disrupted and may not be adequate to support the traffic generated by rescuers. It is also considered as the key tool in Corona Virus (COVID-19) battle. Moreover, the conventional approaches with fixed gateways may not work either, and this might lead to decoding errors due to the large distance between mobile nodes and the gateway. To avoid the decoding errors and improve the reliability of the messages, we propose to use intermediate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to transfer messages from ground-based Long Range (LoRa) nodes to the remote base station (BS). Specifically, this UAV-enabled LoRa architecture is based on the ad hoc WiFi network, wherein, UAVs act as relays for the traffic generated between LoRa nodes and BS. To make the architecture more efficient, a distributed topology control algorithm is also proposed for UAVs. The algorithm is based on virtual spring forces and movement prediction technique that periodically updates the UAV topology to adapt to the movement of the ground-based LoRa nodes that move on the surface. The simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed approach for packet reception rate and average delay quality of service (QoS) metrics. It is observed that the mechanisms implemented in a UAV-enabled LoRa network effectively help to improve the packet reception rate with nominal buffer delays.

Abstract:Multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) form a UAV cluster, which relies on wireless communication networks to facilitate information interaction among the UAVs. UAV clusters offer enhanced efficiency and fault tolerance, making reliable computing services possible. Compared to terrestrial networks, UAV computing network presents several desirable features, including mobility, availability, and flexibility, affording the potential for seamless global coverage. However, due to the inherent openness of wireless communication networks, UAV computing networks are susceptible to various security attacks. Existing access control mechanisms for UAV computing networks predominantly rely on base stations or central servers. This reliance elevates communication overhead for UAVs and exposes them to potential attacks from adversaries. Therefore, we propose a blockchain-aided distributed secure access control scheme specifically tailored for UAV computing networks, enabling UAVs to autonomously manage and determine identity, attributes, and access policies. To address the communication complexity and scalability concerns associated with blockchains, we integrate committee elections and clustering optimizations into the scheme. Security analysis and performance evaluation demonstrate that the proposed scheme can withstand common external and internal attacks in UAV clusters while ensuring lightweight energy consumption and scalability of UAV computing networks.

Autonomous UAV swarms require efficient and stable communication during deployment for a successful mission execution. For instance, the periodic exchange of telemetry data between all swarm members provides the foundation for formation flight and collision avoidance. However, due to the mobility of the vehicles and instability of wireless transmissions, maintaining a secure and reliable all-to-all communication remains challenging. Abstract:This article proposes a cooperative friendly jamming framework for swarm unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying networks with wireless energy harvesting (EH). In particular, we consider a swarm of hovering UAVs that relays information from a terrestrial base station to a distant mobile user and simultaneously generates friendly jamming signals to interfere/obfuscate an eavesdropper. Due to the limited energy of the UAVs, we develop a collaborative time-switching relaying protocol that allows the UAVs to collaborate in harvesting wireless energy, relay information, and jam the eavesdropper. To evaluate the performance, we derive the secrecy outage probability (SOP) for two popular detection techniques at the eavesdropper, i.e., selection combining and maximum-ratio combining. Monte Carlo simulations are then used to validate the theoretical SOP derivation. Using the derived SOP, one can obtain engineering insights to optimize the EH time and the number of UAVs in the swarm to achieve a given secrecy protection level. Furthermore, simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed framework in terms of SOP compared to the conventional AF relaying system. The analytical SOP derived in this work can also be helpful in future UAV secure-communication optimizations (e.g., trajectory and locations of UAVs). As an example, we present a case study to find the optimal corridor to locate the swarm so as to minimize the system SOP. Our proposed framework helps secure communications for various applications that require large coverage, e.g., industrial IoT, smart city, intelligent transportation systems, and critical IoT infrastructures, such as energy and water.

Abstract:Wireless networks ensure the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) communicate and cooperate with each other, which plays an indispensable role among UAVs. The two crucial challenges in UAV wireless networks are energy saving and security. The current lightweight communication approaches lead to insufficient robustness of the encrypted transmission that is insecure. To address this issue, we propose a secure transmission approach with energy efficiency toward UAVs networks. We design a lightweight symmetric encryption algorithm based on SM4 and the relevant key negotiation and update mechanism to protect the confidentiality of communication contents. Moreover, a modified aggregative BLS signature scheme, together with the Merkle Hash tree (MHT), is introduced to guarantee the integrity and authenticity of data packets in transmission. Furthermore, we propose an online/offline revocable identity-based group signature (OORIBGS) scheme and integrate it into our framework for UAV anonymity, traceability, as well as revocability with small key management cost and high efficiency. We give detailed security analysis and prove that our proposal has the properties of data confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, as well as identity traceability and anonymity. Moreover, we apply our approach in the UAVs networks and evaluate the runtime and anti-attack performance. The experimental results show that the proposed method can be effectively used in UAVs secure communication.

Green UAV-enabled Internet-of-Things Network with AI-assisted NOMA for Disaster Management

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted communication is becoming a streamlined technology in providing improved coverage to the internet-of-things (IoT) based devices. Rapid deployment, portability, and flexibility are some of the fundamental characteristics of UAVs, which make them ideal for effectively managing emergency-based IoT applications. This paper studies a UAV-assisted wireless IoT network relying on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to facilitate uplink connectivity for devices spread over a disaster region. The UAV setup is capable of relaying the information to the cellular base station (BS) using decode and forward relay protocol. By jointly utilizing the concepts of unsupervised machine learning (ML) and solving the resulting non-convex problem, we can maximize the total energy efficiency (EE) of IoT devices spread over a disaster region. Our proposed approach uses a combination of k-medoids and Silhouette analysis to perform resource allocation, whereas, power optimization is performed using iterative methods. In comparison to the exhaustive search method, our proposed scheme solves the EE maximization problem with much lower complexity and at the same time improves the overall energy consumption of the IoT devices. Moreover, in comparison to a modified version of greedy algorithm, our proposed approach improves the total EE of the system by 19% for a fixed 50k target number of bits.

Abstract:Over the course of the last decade, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) research community has received a significant amount of attention. Emergency response operations, such as those that follow a natural disaster, are one of the civil applications that could benefit from the use of UAVs in disaster and crisis management. In the event of a catastrophic event, it would be extremely beneficial for both victims and first responders to have access to a UAV network that is capable of deploying independently and offering communication services. However, when working with complicated situations, one of the most difficult things is coming up with exploratory paths for the networks involved. A crisis and disaster management system using a swarm optimization algorithm (SOA) is proposed to assist in disaster and crisis management. In this system, the UAV search and rescue team follows the strategy called the delay tolerant network, which has the ability to explore. The proposed approach is able to find the global maximum in the search space without ever settling for a suboptimal solution. This work has two primary objectives: the first is to investigate a potential disaster zone, and the second is to direct the UAV to a number of victim groups that were found during the investigation phase. For the purpose of performing a characterization, performance metrics such as delay, throughput, performance rate, and path loss have been analyzed. The results show the superiority of the performance over the existing work.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon be omnipresent and billions of sensors and actuators will support our industries and well-being. IoT devices are embedded systems that are connected using wireless technology for most of the cases. The availability of the wireless network serving the IoT, the privacy, integrity, and trustworthiness of the data are of critical importance, since IoT will drive businesses and personal decisions. This paper proposes a new approach in the wireless security domain that leverages advanced wireless technology and the emergence of the unmanned aerial system or vehicle (UAS or UAV). We consider the problem of eavesdropping and analyze how UAVs can aid in reducing, or overcoming this threat in the mobile IoT context. The results show that huge improvements in terms of channel secrecy rate can be achieved when UAVs assist base stations for relaying the information to the desired IoT nodes. Our approach is technology agnostic and can be expanded to address other communications security aspects.

Abstract:Fifth Generation (5G) wireless networks are designed to meet various end-user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements through high data rates (typically of Gbps order) and low latencies. Coupled with Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), 5G can achieve high data rates, enabling complex autonomous smart city services such as the large deployment of self-driving vehicles and large-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled industrial manufacturing. However, to meet the exponentially growing number of connected IoT devices and irregular data and service requests in both low and highly dense locations, the process of enacting traditional cells supported through fixed and costly base stations requires rethought to enable on-demand mobile access points in the form of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for diversified smart city scenarios. This article envisions a 5G network environment that is supported by blockchain-enabled UAVs to meet dynamic user demands with network access supply. The solution enables decentralized service delivery (Drones as a Service) and routing to and from end-users in a reliable and secure manner. Both public and private blockchains are deployed within the UAVs, supported by fog and cloud computing devices and data centers to provide wide range of complex authenticated service and data availability. Particular attention is paid tocomparing data delivery success rates and message exchange in the proposed solution against traditional UAV-supported cellular networks. Challenges and future research are also discussed with highlights on emerging technologies such as Federated Learning.
