Abstract:Phosphate (P) is an irreplaceable resource for the growth of all living organisms, and the impending exhaustion of minable P rock arouses the demand of P recovery, which further promotes the novel technologies development. To reclaim the P from wastewater or sludge conveniently and efficiently, a novel magnetic adsorbent with La-Zr bimetallic modification (La-Zr@Fe3O4) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and rapid separation was proposed in this study. Adsorption tests showed that the adsorption capacity of P on La-Zr@Fe3O4 increased with La content, reaching the maximum value of 49.3 mg/g at pH 3 by L1Z2. Whereas, the addition of La resulted in the decline of desorption efficiency from -85% to -60% in the pH range from 3 to 6, except pH 2. The kinetics of P adsorption on the La-Zr@Fe3O4 was described well by the pseudo-second-order model, while the isotherm of P adsorption was fitted well by the Freundlich model. Besides, the adsorbent exhibited high selectivity towards P over other coexisting ions (Cl- , NO3? , SO4 2?, Mg2+, and Ca2+). The feasibility of P recovery from the solid phase was investigated and confirmed by P recovery from fish farm sludge. The 90% removal efficiency of P and 88% desorption efficiency in cyclic adsorption/desorption experiments evidenced the stability and reusability of La-Zr magnetic adsorbent. The analysis of X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the replacement of OH? with phosphate via the ligand exchange was the adsorption mechanism. This work demonstrated that the highly efficient, rapidly separable, and repeatable LaZr@Fe3O4 has the potential for phosphate sequestration and recovery.

Abstract:Challenges remain in developing sustainable (high-efficient and recyclable) phosphate removal systems with lower costs and reduced secondary pollution when lanthanum (La)-based sorbents are applied to control phosphate in the aquatic environment. To address this issue, a phosphate stabilizing compound, namely magnetic lanthanum/iron co-modified attapulgite (M-LaFeAP), was fabricated by incorporating lanthanum into an iron-modified attapulgite (M-FeAP). Batch experiments demonstrated that 88.34% of the phosphate was rapidly sequestered from aqueous solution within the first hour, and the composites reached a maximal sorption capacity of 43.32 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order model was found to better explain the M-LaFeAP adsorption kinetics and the equilibrium data fitted very well with the Langmuir isotherm model. With the initial phosphate concentration ranging from 2 to 100 mg/L, the M-LaFeAP exhibited superior adsorption performance from 2 to 10 of pH values. In addition, M-LaFeAP presented an excellent selectivity for phosphate when co-existing ions often occurring in water bodies were present, in which the solution ionic strength exerted little influence on phosphate sorption behavior. Notably, the recyclable M-LaFeAP possessed a saturated magnetization of 25.83 emu/g and was easily separated under the external magnetic field. After five serial adsorption-desorption cycles, M-LaFeAP still possessed a better sorption performance (35.78 mg/g), which demonstrated its appreciable reusability for phosphate removal. Our findings indicate that the separable and recyclable M-LaFeAP demonstrated high-efficient phosphate removal in a sustainable way, which is promising in phosphate removing and recovering applications.

Phosphate sequestration by magnetic La-impregnated bentonite granules: A combined experimental and DFT study

Abstract:To use the lanthanum hydroxide (La(OH)3) as a low-cost, highly-efficient, and recyclable adsorbent, it could be embedded on a magnetic substance to improve its physical features and lower the overall cost. Herein, novel millimetric-size magnetic lanthanum-modified bentonite (La-MB) granules were fabricated for P sequestration, and the adsorption performance and mechanisms were systematic studied. The maximum capacity of P uptake by La-MB was up to 48.4 mg/g, which was higher than many previous reported La-based adsorbents. Moreover, the enhanced uptake of P was achieved over a wide pH range (3–9) and in the coexistence of common anions (Cl−, NO3−, and SO42−). Besides, the exhausted La-MB can be effectively regenerated by 5 mol/L NaOH with about 94.5% desorption efficiency and 60.8% uptake capacity remained during 5 cycles. The La-MB also exhibited excellent performance of anti-interference in two kinds of real wastewaters. The postsorption characterization and DFT calculations revealed that the electrostatic interaction and chemical precipitation jointly facilitated phosphate sequestration by La-MB during the rapid sorption phase, while ligand exchange and complexation reaction played more important roles than others during the slow sorption step. The electrostatic interaction not only effectively promoted the ligand exchange, and also further accelerated chemical precipitation via the formation of LaPO4 during the whole process of phosphate uptake. Overall, millimetric La-MB is considered to have great potential for engineering application, and this work also provides new insights into the molecular-level mechanism of phosphate sequestration by La-MB.

Abstract:Decreasing phosphate concentration in wastewater before discharge is crucial for preventing eutrophication. In this study, a novel La-Fe-CNT film was developed and its mechanism study for highly efficient phosphate adsorption was carried out. The morphology, thermal, structure and element analysis suggested that La and Fe hydroxide species were successfully fabricated on the CNT film and phosphate could be successfully adsorbed. The adsorption condition optimization of the La-Fe-CNT film was carried out by response surface methodology (RSM) with a Box–Behnken design (BBD). A low pH and low temperature were beneficial for the adsorption process, while the phosphate concentration showed little impact on phosphate uptake. It was indicated that pH = 4, temperature = 35.6 °C and phosphate concentration = 500 mg/L were the optimum adsorption conditions for La-Fe-CNT, with the optimized adsorption capacity of 137.8 mg/g, which was in good agreement with the actual value (140.3 mg/g). Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the q m of La-Fe-CNT film calculated from Langmuir model decreased from 164.9 mg/g to 121.7 mg/g from 30 to 80 °C, and the adsorption occurred through a spontaneous-exothermic-multimechanism process. This physicochemical process was controlled by both intraparticle and surface film diffusion. Adsorption experiments in presence of different ionic strengths and co-existing anions further confirmed the occurrence of inner-sphere and outer-sphere complexation during phosphate uptake. Overall, the La-Fe-CNT film showed ideal phosphate removal performance with high selectivity, indicating its potential for actual wastewater purification.

Fabrication of lanthanum/chitosan co-modified bentonite and phosphorus removal mechanism from low-concentration landscape water

Abstract:It is essential to solve the problem of phosphorus pollution in urban landscape water and reduce the degree of eutrophication. In this paper, lanthanum-modified bentonite (La-B) was prepared by high-temperature calcination and liquid-phase precipitation. Then La-B was modified with chitosan to prepare a low-cost environment-friendly functional material: lanthanum/chitosan co-modified bentonite (La-BC). It can reach the adsorption equilibrium within 30 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity is 15.5 mg/g (initial phosphate concentration 50 mg/L); when the target concentration is 2 mg/L, the removal rate can reach 98.5%. La-BC has a stronger anti-interference ability to common coexisting anions SO42-, HCO3-, NO3- and Cl- in the urban landscape water body. La-BC has excellent performance in weakly acidic to neutral water, and its pH applicable range has been improved, making it possible to apply in practical water. The fitting results show that the adsorption behavior conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich model. After 5 regenerations, the removal efficiency remained around 80%. In the actual water test results, the phosphate concentration can be controlled below 0.1 mg/L and the removal rate is above 75%. Due to its low cost and reusability, it has great potential in the practical application of phosphate removal from landscape water.

Abstract:Reducing phosphate concentrations from low levels to ultra-low levels (e.g., below 0.01 mg P/L) is crucial for preventing and treating eutrophication. Adsorption is promising but still challenged by the limited adsorption capacity at low phosphate concentrations, which leads to high costs. Herein, we propose a heterovalent metal modification strategy using Fe(II) to improve the adsorption capacity of lanthanum (La) carbonate for low-level phosphate removal. A La:Fe(II) molar ratio of 7:1 enabled the partial substitution of Fe(II) for La, resulting in a La/Fe carbonate with a high adsorption capacity. La/Fe carbonate exhibited fast adsorption kinetics, excellent applicability in a pH range of 5–7, and good reusability at low phosphate concentrations. Its adsorption capacity at low phosphate levels surpassed previously reported adsorbents. La/Fe carbonate demonstrated high resistance to complex water matrices and cost-effectiveness, achieving an effluent concentration below 0.01 mg P/L in real wastewater treatment. Mechanism analysis revealed that Fe(II) substitution led to super-saturated coordination and Fe(II) → Fe(III) conversion for charge compensation. The self-conversion of Fe(II) → Fe(III) donated electrons to neighboring La active sites, activating these active centers, which caused a positive shift in the d-band center of La active sites and enhanced interfacial electron transport between La/Fe carbonate and phosphate. This work offers an efficient, easy-to-operate, and low-cost approach to achieve ultra-low phosphate concentrations through adsorption, and fills the research gap on the mechanism of heterovalent metal modulation to enhance the phosphate adsorption capacity.
Characteristics and mechanism of phosphate removal by lanthanum modified bentonite in the presence of dissolved organic matter

Abstract:Lanthanum modified bentonite (LMB) is a widely used adsorbent for removing inorganic phosphorus from polluted water to prevent eutrophication. However, its efficiency can be affected by various environmental factors, including dissolved organic matter (DOM), which is still unclear. In this study, we systematically explored the influence of model DOMs, including HA, bovine serum albumin (BSA), and sodium alginate (SA), on phosphate adsorption by LMB, as well as to elucidate the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Our results showed that only HA had a significant effect on phosphate adsorption by LMB, causing inhibition. When three DOMs were mixed with phosphate in different proportions and DOM was mainly HA, the performance of phosphate adsorption on LMB became worse, while BSA can slightly offset this impact. The kinetics of HA and phosphate adsorption on LMB followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and isotherms fitted the Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 5.7 mg g −1 for P and 12 mg g −1 for HA. However, when HA and phosphate were mixed based on their Qm, a C/P molar ratio of 5.35, LMB preferentially adsorbed phosphate. HA invasion was also disadvantageous for phosphate removal by LMB, in which P adsorption was less efficient at low-concentrations. However, during co-adsorption the adsorption capacity for HA was higher. With a secondary addition of higher levels of P, both pollutants were adsorbed more effectively. In the natural water experiment, phosphate concentration decreased with increasing shaking time, while the UV254 value showed a downward trend, indicating that LMB also adsorbed HA. Characterization results showed that La and phosphate formed LaPO 4 precipitation, forming La– O –P inner-sphere complexes as the main mechanism of phosphate removal by LMB. La and HA formed La-HA complexes, with O –CO bonds from HA competing for lanthanum with phosphate. Despite HA obstructing pores from adsorbent, LMB still maintained a good binding ability with phosphate. It may form La– P -HA ternary complexes during adsorption to keep HA adsorption amount.

Facile fabrication of dolomite-doped biochar/bentonite for effective removal of phosphate from complex wastewaters

Abstract:The removal of phosphate from wastewater using traditional biological or precipitation methods is a huge challenge. The use of high-performance adsorbents has been shown to address this problem. In this study, a novel composite adsorbent, composed of dolomite-doped biochar and bentonite (DO/BB), was first synthesized via co-pyrolysis. The combination of initial phosphate concentration of 100 mg/L and 1.6 g/L of DO/BB exhibited a high phosphate-adsorption capacity of 62 mg/g with a removal efficiency of 99.8%. It was also stable in complex water environments with various levels of solution pH, coexisting anions, high salinity, and humic acid. With this new composite, the phosphate concentration of the actual domestic sewage decreased from 9 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, and the total nitrogen and chemical oxygen demand also decreased effectively. Further, the cross-flow treatment using a PVC membrane loaded with DO/BB (PVC-DO/BB), decreased the phosphate concentration from 1 to 0.08 mg/L, suggesting outstanding separation of phosphate pollutants via a combination of adsorption and separation. In addition, the removal of phosphate by the PVC-DO/BB membrane using NaOH solution as an eluent was almost 90% after 5 cycles. The kinetic, isotherm and XPS analysis before and after adsorption suggested that adsorption via a combination of electrostatic interaction, complexation and precipitation contributed to the excellent separation by the as-obtained membranes.

Abstract:Phosphorus removal from wastewater is vital to mitigate the eutrophication of receiving waters. In this work, acidified diatomite (AD) was loaded with Lanthanum carbonate (La2O2CO3) by solvothermal method to prepare a series of composites La2O2CO3@AD, which were used to adsorb phosphate. The materials La2O2CO3@AD have ordered structures, and rich functional groups as verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy spectrum analysis (EDS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then, all La2O2CO3@AD were used as adsorbents for fast and efficient removal of phosphate from aqueous solution by batch equilibrium experiments. The experimental results demonstrate that the phosphate adsorption of La2O2CO3@AD is pH-dependent, and completed within 360 min. The adsorption kinetic and isotherm data follow the pseudo-second-order equation and the Freundlich model, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms of phosphate are ascribed to the chemical bond force and ligand exchange.

Abstract:In this work, bentonite was encapsulated into PVA/SA matrix to fabricate bentonite/PVA/SA aerogel (BPS) using lanthanum (La) as the cross-linking agent. La (III) cross-linking reaction with polymers realized synchronous gelation and lanthanum introduction into the composite, which endowed BPS with efficient phosphate removal performance and convenient separation property. Batch experiments indicated that BPS aerogel could maintain efficient and stable phosphate removal (>95%) within a wide solution pH range (4–10), and well-performed phosphate capturing of BPS at NaCl and seasalt salinity of 0–4% implied its promising application potential in saline environment. Besides, the good fitness of pseudo-second-order kinetic model suggested chemisorption of phosphate on BPS surface, and film diffusion was the primary rate-limiting step. Isotherm study with the preferred fitness of Sips model suggested monolayer adsorption characteristic of BPS at high phosphate concentration, whereas multi-layer coverage of phosphate occurred at low concentration. Maximum experimental adsorption capacity of BPS was detected as ∼28.9 mg P/g, which was competitive among similar adsorbents. In addition, long-term phosphate leakage detection at varied systematic pH suggested the stable binding of phosphate on BPS. The combined characterization analysis illustrated that multiple function including electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange and Lewis acid-base interaction drove the loading of phosphate on BPS surface. Overall results demonstrated certain potential of BPS aerogel as candidate sorbent for phosphate adsorption from complicated aqueous environment.

Abstract:Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 particles have been synthesized by solvothermal method, and a layer of dense silica sol polymer is coated on the surface prepared by sol-gel technique; then La(OH)3 covered the surface of silica sol polymer in an irregular shape by controlled in situ growth technology. These magnetic materials are characterized by TEM, FT-IR, XRD, SEM, EDS and VSM; the results show that La(OH)3 nanoparticles have successfully modified on Fe3O4 surface. The prepared Fe3O4@La(OH)3 inorganic polymer has been used as adsorbent to remove phosphate efficiently. The effects of solution pH, adsorbent dosage and co-existing ions on phosphate removal are investigated. Moreover, the adsorption kinetic equation and isothermal model are used to describe the adsorption performance of Fe3O4@La(OH)3. It was observed that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 exhibits a fast equilibrium time of 20 min, high phosphate removal rate (>95.7%), high sorption capacity of 63.72 mgP/g, excellent selectivity for phosphate in the presence of competing ions, under the conditions of phosphate concentration 30 mgP/L, pH = 7, adsorbent dose 0.6 g/L and room temperature. The phosphate adsorption process by Fe3O4@La(OH)3 is best described by the pseudo-second-order equation and Langmuir isotherm model. Furthermore, the real samples and reusability experiment indicate that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 could be regenerated after desorption, and 92.78% phosphate removing remained after five cycles. Therefore, La(OH)3 nanoparticles deposited on the surface of monodisperse Fe3O4 microspheres have been synthesized for the first time by a controlled in-situ growth method. Experiments have proved that Fe3O4@La(OH)3 particles with fast separability, large adsorption capacity and easy reusability can be used as a promising material in the treatment of phosphate wastewater or organic pollutants containing phosphoric acid functional group.

Abstract:In this study, Fe-Zr-La tri-metal oxide (FZLO) composite was synthesized by co-precipitation method as new complex adsorbent for effective phosphate removal from aqueous media. The scanning electron microscopic study revealed that the adsorbent was of amorphous structure and consisted of the inhomogeneous aggregated nanoparticles with different sizes. Various influencing parameters such as pH values, initial concentration of phosphate ions, contact time, temperature and co-existing anions were studied to perform batch adsorption experiments. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption process was highly pH-dependent and obtained the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 101.0 mg g−1 at pH = 6. The adsorption process occurred on surface of FZLO composite has been found to be mono-layered and chemisorption dominated in nature as the data fitted well to Langmuir isotherm as well as the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The structure and properties of the adsorbent before and after adsorption using FT-IR, XRD and XPS techniques suggested that the adsorption mechanisms involved electrostatic attraction, complexation and ligand exchange. After the adsorption, the remained P concentration met the permissible limit by the Environmental Protection Agency. The Fe-Zr-La tri-metal oxide composite could be a promising adsorbent for phosphate removal from aqueous media.

Abstract:Advanced adsorption of low concentration phosphate by low cost lignin-based adsorbents from water or wastewater is an economic and effective way to prevent the occurrence of eutrophication. In this work, lignin, a waste material recovered from black liquor, was treated with a simple interfacial solid-phase chemical modification method to design a high efficiency phosphate adsorbent. First, the lignin was modified by triethylenetetramine (TETA) with the Mannich reaction, and then Fe(III) was chelated onto the aminated lignin. An efficient low concentration phosphate adsorption was observed by the kinetics experiments, which followed pseudo-second-order kinetically. The adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics were examined. This adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM, particle size analysis, ζ potential analysis, and XPS. FTIR and XPS analyses indicated that iron atom was the binding site for phosphate adsorption. SEM pictures suggested that the adsorbent was uniformly ball-shaped and the particle size was about 450 nm. Both the adsorption experiments and characterization demonstrated that the phosphate adsorption mechanism of Fe(III)-complexed lignin (Fe-CL) followed the complexation mechanism between iron and phosphate on Fe-CL. This study implied that biomass-based lignin could be used as a potential adsorbent for efficient removal of low concentration phosphate from water or wastewater.

In order to explore the effect of different La/Fe oxide composites (LF) on phosphate adsorption, three bimetallic composite oxides of La/Fe were prepared by citric acid sol-gel method at 600, 700 and 800 oC (named LF-600, LF-700 and LF-800). According to adsorption experiments, the adsorption capacity was changed obviously with the temperature increasing. The maximum adsorption capacity was 77.08, 41.17 and 14.58 mg g−1 at pH 7.0 of LF-600, LF-700 and LF-800, respectively. The specific surface area (SBET) and the crystal type are the main factors affecting the adsorption capacity. With the temperature increasing, the SBET reduced and the crystal phase was LaOCl and Fe2O3 of LF-600, LaOCl, LaFeO3 and Fe2O3 of LF-700, and LaFeO3 and LaOCl of LF-800. In addition, the adsorption capacities decreased obviously with the increase of pH and the addition of CO3 2−. The FTIR, XRD and XPS analysis proved that the adsorption mechanism mainly was surface precipitation, electrostatic attraction and complexation, and complexation was the main adsorption mechanism.

Abstract:The bimetallic La‐Zr‐MOFs have good resistance to acids and alkalis and have a wide pH range and a high selectivity for phosphate in a complex environment. The maximum adsorption capacity of La‐Zr‐MOFs was 127.7 mg g−1. And the adsorption mechanism involves ligand exchange and electrostatic interaction. Deposition of excessive phosphate in natural water column caused several issues, like the eutrophication and destruction of aquatic ecosystems. Adsorption has been an effective and convenient method for phosphate elimination. Herein, a novel bimetallic metal–organic framework adsorbent, namely, La‐Zr‐MOF, was prepared, and the morphology, crystallite, characteristic functional groups, specific surface area, and composite material surfaces were analyzed using XRD, FT‐IR, SEM‐EDS, and BET. The adsorption performance of the adsorbent was systematically evaluated by batch adsorption experiments, and the adsorption thermodynamic and kinetic properties were analyzed. The results reveal that La‐Zr‐MOF exhibits a high selectivity and sorption performance for phosphate, and the adsorption of La‐Zr‐MOF follows the Langmuir and pseudo–second‐order models; the phosphate removal procedure is a chemisorption accompanied by an endothermic reaction, and the maximum capacity was 127.7 mg g−1. Combined with batch adsorption experiments, kinetic and thermodynamic studies and various characterization analyses together revealed the phosphate removal mechanism, mainly ligand exchange and electrostatic interactions.

Abstract:The rapid development of modern agriculture aggravated water eutrophication . Therein, efficient and selective removal of phosphorus in water is the key to alleviating eutrophication. It is well known that lanthanum (La)-based material is a kind of outstanding phosphorus-locking agent. Therefore, improving the property of La-based adsorbents is a hot topic in this field. Herein, novel porous hydroxyl double salts (La/Bi-HDS) with bimetallic capture sites were prepared. The experimental result shows that La/Bi-HDS could maintain the high removal rate in the solution with a higher concentration of competing ions and the maximum P adsorption quantity of La/Bi-HDS attains 168.12 mg/g. Mechanistic studies supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculation demonstrate that introducing Bi 3+ optimizes the electronic structure of La, reducing adsorption energy. In addition, the surface analysis shows that the introduction of Bi, which increases the pore size and volume of the material, improves the utilization efficiency of the active site. In a word, the introduction of Bi element as a strategy of killing two birds with one stone successfully improved the performance of La-based adsorbent. It provided a new direction for developing an efficient phosphorus-locking agent.

Abstract:Excessive phosphate loading leads to eutrophication problems in rivers or lakes and causes serious environmental and economic damages, urging new technologies to reduce effluent phosphate at ultra-low levels. As a promising candidate, adsorption over metal oxides is restricted by the released hydroxide anions (OH-) through ligand exchange, which elevates pH and suppresses further adsorption. In this contribution, we found ferrous ions (Fe2+) significantly enhance phosphate removal over hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) in a wide pH range via a cooperation of adsorption and precipitation, and clarified the synergistic mechanism by a series of characterizations and the modified models of adsorption isotherms and pseudo second-order kinetics. The combination of Fe2+and HFO removed up to 51.7 mg/g of phosphate at pH 4.0, with 43.6 and 8.1 mg/g attributing to adsorption and precipitation, respectively. In comparison to HFO alone, HFO/Fe2+ system achieved 2.2-fold increase in phosphate removal, 1.9-fold increase in phosphate adsorption capacity, and 3.4-fold increase in phosphate removal rate. The enhancement is understood by that hydroxide anions released from ligand exchange over HFO are neutralized by protons produced from the oxidative precipitation of ferrous ions. The HFO/Fe2+ combining system is promising to realize advanced removal of low concentration phosphate containing wastewater, and these findings bring new insights for the development of novel phosphate removal technologies through a rational design of a combination process.
Heated Kaolinite-La(iii) Hydroxide Complex for Effective Removal of Phosphate from Eutrophic Water

Abstract:Eutrophication has long been a serious environmental problem in global water bodies, and phosphate has been considered as one of the key factors causing water eutrophication. Aiming to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly absorbent for phosphate removal, a type of heated kaolinite-lanthanum hydroxide complex (HKL-LaOH) was prepared via an in-situ synthesis method. In the complex, a large number of nanoscale lanthanum hydroxide flakes were observed on the heated kaolinite surface. The HKL-LaOH with a relatively low lanthanum oxide content (4.42 wt%) exhibited a high phosphate adsorption capacity of 26.15 mg g-1. Such a high utilization rate of lanthanum in HKL-LaOH was attributed to the unique two-dimensional flake shape of heated kaolinite, which achieved the effective dispersion of La(OH)3 on the complex. Furthermore, a great quantity of LaPO4 nano -particles on the heated kaolinite surface of the HKL-LaOH complex were observed, which indicated chemical adsorption of phosphate followed by precipitation of LaPO4. In summary, the high dispersion of La(OH)3 in HKL-LaOH and the resulted formation of LaPO4 nanoparticles leads to high phosphate removal from eutrophic water bodies, which shows excellent application potential in the treatment of eutrophic water.

Abstract:Given the rigorous discharge standards and the low-concentration phosphate in wastewater, there is an urgent demand for the development of economically efficient materials and technologies for removing low-concentration phosphate. In this study, a highly efficient adsorbent for low-concentration phosphate, known as lanthanum and iron co-modified sawdust biochar(La-MBC), was successfully synthesized. The La-MBC displayed outstanding adsorption performance in the treatment of low-concentration phosphate wastewater with a phosphate removal rate of around 100% when the phosphate concentration was below 1.0 mg/L. Moreover, the results of adsorption isotherms indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of phosphate by La-MBC was nearly 27.49 mg/g. The results demonstrated that La-MBC maintained significant stability in phosphate adsorption, achieving a removal efficiency exceeding 90% across the pH range of 4 to 8. More attractively, La-MBC has been demonstrated impressive selectivity in adsorbing phosphate, even in the presence of competing ions. Characterization findings and adsorption experiments provided evidence that the adsorption of phosphate by La-MBC was mainly driven by chemisorption. Collectively, these findings strongly indicate that La-MBC is an exceptional choice for efficiently removing low-concentration phosphate in real-world applications.

Abstract:Present study reports the successful development of a novel lanthanum (La)-based magnetic adsorbent and its use for phosphate removal from water. For its synthesis, natural magnetite (Mag), Fe3O4, was subjected to partial dissolution in HC1 solution and the obtained suspension was mixed with an alkaline solution for in-situ synthesis of ferrihydrite (Fh)-coated Mag (Mag@Fh). Mag@Fh was then decorated with La (hydr)oxides followed by calcination to produce Fh-coated and La-decorated Mag (Mag@Fh-La). Obtained Mag@Fh-La represented high phosphate adsorption capacity (44.8 mg P/g at 15.7% La in its structure) and La usage efficiency. Moreover, Mag@Fh-La retained its high adsorption capacity (>35.0 mg Pig) over a wide range of equilibrium solution pH (3.2-10.7). The combination of FTIR, XPS analysis and adsorption experiments revealed that ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction were the main mechanisms that jointly facilitated the adsorption of phosphate. Adsorption-desorption cycle studies confirmed the well retained adsorption efficiency of regenerated Mag@Fh-La for repeated applications. Final experiments with real domestic wastewater (initial phosphate concentration of 1.7 mg/L) revealed that 0.2 g/L Mag@Fh-La efficiently reduced the phosphate concentration to below 0.02 mg/L. Overall, this work clearly highlights that the synthesized novel adsorbent has promising applications in phosphate removal from real wastewater. (C) 2018 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
