Abstract:Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are designed to detect gravitational waves (GWs) at nHz frequencies. The expected dominant signal is given by the superposition of all waves emitted by the cosmological population of supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries. Such superposition creates an incoherent stochastic background, on top of which particularly bright or nearby sources might be individually resolved. In this contribution I describe the properties of the expected GW signal, highlighting its dependence on the overall binary population, the relation between SMBHs and their hosts, and their coupling with the stellar and gaseous environment. I describe the status of current PTA efforts, and prospect of future detection and SMBH binary astrophysics.

Abstract:Recent measurements of the four pulsar timing arrays were interpreted as a signal of the low frequency stochastic gravitational wave background. We show that the amplitude and angular correlations of pulsar timing residuals can be interpreted as a consequence of the vortical geodetic motions of pulsar's photons within rotating and expanding Universe. The resulting angular correlation curves are similar to the Hellings-Downs curve and the observed amplitude allows the estimate of the vorticity of the Universe. Therefore, no gravitational wave background is necessary to elucidate the pulsar timing data.

Abstract:The detection of hecto-hertz gravitational waves from a stellar-mass binary black hole merger by ground-based laser interferometers in 2015 opened a new window to explore the gravitational Universe, largely complementing the existing means of observing the electromagnetic Universe. Extraordinary discoveries were made afterwards, including the entrance into the multi-messenger astronomy era with worldwide attention to a merger of a binary neutron star in 2017. In June of 2023, several international collaborations of pulsar timing array, including the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array, announced key evidence in revealing a new type of gravitational wave-The nano-hertz stochastic gravitational wave background, most likely originating from supermassive binary black hole mergers. These pieces of evidence were achieved with large radio telescopes-Like the five-hundred-meter aperture spherical radio telescope in Guizhou China-Monitoring in a dedicated way the spatially-correlated times of arrival of pulse signals from pulsars. Most of the pulsars are fast rotating neutron stars with strong magnetic fields. The radio wave beams emit along the magnetic axis of the rotating neutron star and they sweep past the Earth periodically, similar to a lighthouse's flashes. We can establish a timing model for the arrival time of the pulsating signals to account for the effects in the generation and propagation of the pulses. At the same time, these signals are affected by the passing gravitational waves and in return, by analyzing times of arrival of pulsar pulses, pulsar astronomers are able to infer the properties of the stochastic gravitational wave background. Currently the evidence is still not strong enough to claim a solid detection, but is already telling us the bright future of using pulsar timing arrays to probe the nature of nano-hertz gravitational waves. These gravitational waves are most likely from supermassive binary black hole mergers. When two galaxies merge, the two central supermassive black holes can form a gravitational bound system. The rich information about the population of the supermassive binary black holes and the mergers of galaxies is encoded in the gravitational waves, from which we can enhance our understanding of the supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. On the other hand, these gravitational waves are also possibly from early Universe, including the inflation, phase transition of matter, and even new types of objects like the cosmic strings and domain walls. In addition, we can test gravity theories with gravitational wave backgrounds. The propagation speed and the polarization state of gravitational waves can be different in modified gravity theories from what are predicted by the general relativity, which affect the times of arrival of the pulses in different ways. Thus, precise measurements of the correlation of the times of arrival of pulses between pulsars are in principle possible to distinguish different gravity theories. Near-future pulsar timing array observations, equipped with remarkable timing and searching ability of, say, the upcoming Square Kilometre Array, will provide essential data to better disclose the nature of nano-hertz gravitational waves and also the fundamental properties of gravitation and spacetime.

Abstract:Gravitational waves provide a new probe of the Universe which can reveal a number of cosmological and astrophysical phenomena that cannot be observed by electromagnetic waves. Different frequencies of gravitational waves are detected by different means. Among them, precision measurements of pulsar timing provides a natural detector for gravitational waves with light-year scale wavelengths. In this review, first a basic framework to detect a stochastic gravitational wave background using pulsar timing array is introduced, and then possible interpretations of the latest observational result of 12.5 year NANOGrav data are described.

Here we review the status of the three primary PTA projects and the joint International Pulsar Timing Array project. Abstract:The stability of the spin of pulsars and the precision with which these spins can be determined, allows many unique tests of interest to physics and astrophysics. Perhaps the most challenging and revolutionary of these, is the detection of nanohertz gravitational waves. An increasing number of efforts to detect and study long-period gravitational waves by timing an array of pulsars have been ongoing for several decades and the field is moving ever closer to actual gravitational-wave science. In this review article, we summarise the state of this field by presenting the current sensitivity to gravitational waves and by reviewing recent progress along the multiple lines of research that are part of the continuous push towards greater sensitivity. We also briefly review some of the most recent efforts at astrophysical interpretation of the most recent GW estimates derived from pulsar timing.

Gravitational wave sources for Pulsar Timing Arrays

Abstract:Very recently, several pulsar timing array collaborations, including CPTA, EPTA, and NANOGrav, reported their results from searches for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB), with each finding positive evidence for SGWB. In this work, we assessed the credibility of interpreting the Hellings-Downs correlated free-spectrum process of EPTA, PPTA, and NANOGrav as either the result of supermassive black hole binary mergers or various stochastic SGWB sources that originated in the early Universe, including first-order phase transitions, cosmic strings, domain walls, and large-amplitude curvature perturbations. Our observations show that the current new datasets do not display a strong preference for any specific SGWB source based on Bayesian analysis.

The Gravitational Wave Background from Massive Black Hole Binaries in Illustris: spectral features and time to detection with pulsar timing arrays

Abstract:Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTA) around the world are using the incredible consistency of millisecond pulsars to measure low frequency gravitational waves from (super)Massive Black Hole (MBH) binaries. We use comprehensive MBH merger models based on cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to predict the spectrum of the stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background (GWB). We use real Time-of-Arrival (TOA) specifications from the European, NANOGrav, Parkes, and International PTA (IPTA) to calculate realistic times to detection of the GWB across a wide range of model parameters. In addition to exploring the parameter space of environmental hardening processes (in particular: stellar scattering efficiencies), we have expanded our models to include eccentric binary evolution which can have a strong effect on the GWB spectrum. Our models show that strong stellar scattering and high characteristic eccentricities enhance the GWB strain amplitude near the PTA sensitive "sweet-spot" (near the frequency $f = 1 \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$), slightly improving detection prospects in these cases. While the GWB $amplitude$ is degenerate between cosmological and environmental parameters, the location of a spectral turnover at low frequencies ($f \lesssim 0.1 \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$) is strongly indicative of environmental coupling. At high frequencies ($f\gtrsim 1 \, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$), the GWB spectral index can be used to infer the number density of sources and possibly their eccentricity distribution. Even with merger models that use pessimistic environmental and eccentricity parameters, if the current rate of PTA expansion continues, we find that the International PTA is highly likely to make a detection within about 10 years.

Abstract:We introduce a novel approach for detecting gravitational waves through their influence on the shape of resolved astronomical objects. This method, complementary to pulsar timing arrays and astrometric techniques, explores the time-dependent distortions caused by gravitational waves on the shapes of celestial bodies, such as galaxies or any resolved extended object. By developing a formalism based on that adopted in the analysis of weak lensing effects, we derive the response functions for gravitational wave-induced distortions and compute their angular correlation functions. Our results highlight the sensitivity of these distortions to the lowest frequencies of the gravitational wave spectrum and demonstrate how they produce distinct angular correlation signatures, including null and polarisation-sensitive correlations. These findings pave the way for future high-resolution surveys to exploit this novel observable, potentially offering new insights into the stochastic gravitational wave background and cosmological models.

Abstract:Astrometry, the precise measurement of star motions, offers an alternative avenue to investigate low-frequency gravitational waves through the spatial deflection of photons, complementing pulsar timing arrays reliant on timing residuals. Upcoming data from Gaia and Roman can not only cross-check pulsar timing array findings but also explore the uncharted frequency range bridging pulsar timing arrays and LISA. We present an analytical framework to evaluate the feasibility of detecting a gravitational wave background, considering measurement noise and the intrinsic variability of the stochastic background. Furthermore, we highlight astrometry's crucial role in uncovering key properties of the gravitational wave background, such as spectral index and chirality, employing information-matrix analysis. Finally, we simulate the emergence of quadrupolar correlations, commonly referred to as the generalized Hellings-Downs curves.

Abstract:The International Pulsar Timing Array project combines observations of pulsars from both northern and southern hemisphere observatories with the main aim of detecting ultra-low frequency (∼ 10−9–10−8 Hz) gravitational waves. Here we introduce the project, review the methods used to search for gravitational waves emitted from coalescing supermassive binary black-hole systems in the centres of merging galaxies and discuss the status of the project.

Abstract:In recent years, several pulsar timing array collaborations have reported first hints for a stochastic gravitational wave background at nano-Hertz frequencies. Here we elaborate on the possibility that this signal comes from new physics that leads to the generation of a primordial stochastic gravitational wave background. We propose a set of simple but concrete models that can serve as benchmarks for gravitational waves sourced by cosmological phase transitions, domain wall networks, cosmic strings, axion dynamics, or large scalar fluctuations. These models are then confronted with pulsar timing data and with cosmological constraints. With only a limited number of free parameters per model, we are able to identify viable regions of parameter space and also make predictions for future astrophysical and laboratory tests that can help with model identification and discrimination.

Charting the Nanohertz Gravitational Wave Sky with Pulsar Timing Arrays

Abstract:In the summer of 2023, the pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) announced a compelling evidence for the existence of a nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB). Despite this breakthrough, however, several critical questions remain unanswered: What is the source of the signal? How can cosmic variance be accounted for? To what extent can we constrain nanohertz gravity? When will individual supermassive black hole binaries become observable? And how can we achieve a stronger detection? These open questions have spurred significant interests in PTA science, making this an opportune moment to revisit the astronomical and theoretical foundations of the field, as well as the data analysis techniques employed. In this review, we focus on the theoretical aspects of the SGWB as detected by PTAs. We provide a comprehensive derivation of the expected signal and its correlation, presented in a pedagogical manner, while also addressing current constraints. Looking ahead, we explore future milestones in the field, with detailed discussions on emerging theoretical considerations such as cosmic variance, the cumulants of the one- and two-point functions, subluminal gravitational waves, and the anisotropy and polarization of the SGWB.

Testing Gravity with Realistic Gravitational Waveforms in Pulsar Timing Arrays

Abstract:We consider the effects of relaxing the assumption that gravitational waves composing the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) are uncorrelated between frequencies in analyses of the data from Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs). While individual monochromatic plane waves are often a good approximation, a background composed of astrophysical sources cannot be monochromatic since an infinite plane wave carries no signal. We consider how relaxing this assumption allows us to extract potential information about modified dispersion relations and other fundamental physics questions, as both the group and phase velocity of waves become relevant. After developing the formalism we carry out simple Gaussian wavepacket examples and then consider more realistic waveforms, such as that from binary inspirals. When the frequency evolves only slowly across the PTA temporal baseline, the monochromatic assumption at an effective mean frequency remains a good approximation and we provide scaling relations that characterize its accuracy.

A Test of Gravity with Pulsar Timing Arrays

Abstract:A successful measurement of the Stochastic Gravitational Wave Background (SGWB) in Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) would open up a new window through which to test the predictions of General Relativity (GR). We consider how these measurements might reveal deviations from GR by studying the overlap reduction function -- the quantity that in GR is approximated by the Hellings-Downs curve -- in some sample modifications of gravity, focusing on the generic prediction of a modified dispersion relation for gravitational waves. We find a distinct signature of such modifications to GR -- a shift in the minimum angle of the angular distribution -- and demonstrate that this shift is quantitatively sensitive to any change in the phase velocity. In a given modification of gravity, this result can be used, in some regions of parameter space, to distinguish the effect of a modified dispersion relation from that due to the presence of extra polarization modes.
