Abstract:Strawberries are popular fruits around the world, and their yield and fruit quality rely on pollination by honey bees and bumblebee colonies. Both bee species have their own advantages in strawberry pollination. This study investigates the characteristic of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa ‘Red Face’) flower volatiles and their effects on bee pollinators by (1) detecting the volatile compounds of strawberry flowers by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), (2) determining whether Bombus terrestris or Apis mellifera showed antennae responses to certain compounds of strawberry flower volatiles by an electroantennography test (EAG), and (3) testing whether these compounds could elicit a corresponding behavioral response in bees. The results showed that (1) there were 38 chemical compounds in ‘Red Face’ volatiles with 7 types, most of which were known to be generally emitted by flowers but also have some compounds that have not been reported in strawberry flowers; (2) B. terrestris and A. mellifera had strong EAG responses to several compounds, respectively, especially to ethyl benzoate, (Z)-3-hexenyl propionate, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, benzeneacetaldehyde and melonal; and (3) both bee species showed significant avoidance behaviors to four tested compounds, especially the B. terrestris. Flower volatiles of strawberry ‘Red face’ were different from other strawberry varieties that have been reported; some of these electrophysiologically active compounds could cause antennal potential responses in bees, as well as behavioral responses. Our study supports the idea that strawberry flower volatiles are one of the factors influencing bee foraging decisions and provides a reference for formulating more reasonable bee pollination to improve strawberry fruit quality.

Differences in EAG Response and Behavioral Choices between Honey Bee and Bumble Bee to Tomato Flower Volatiles

Abstract:Bumble bees and honey bees are of vital importance for tomato pollination, although honey bees are less attracted to tomato flowers than bumble bees. Little is known about how tomato flower volatile compounds influence the foraging behaviors of honey bees and bumble bees. In this study, compounds of tomato flower volatiles were detected by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Electroantennography (EAG) and a dynamic two-choice olfactometer were used, respectively, to compare the differences of antennal and behavioral responses between Apis mellifera and Bombus terrestris towards selected volatile compounds. A total of 46 compounds were detected from the tomato flower volatiles. Of the 16 compounds tested, A. mellifera showed strong antennal responses to 3 compounds (1-nonanal, (+)-dihydrocarvone, and toluene) when compared with a mineral oil control, and B. terrestris showed 7 pronounced EAG responses (1,3-xylene, (+)-dihydrocarvone, toluene, piperitone, eucarvone, 1-nonanal, and β-ocimene). Additionally, 1-nonanal and (+)-dihydrocarvone elicited significant avoidance behavior of A. mellifera, but not of B. terrestris. In conclusion, bumble bees are more sensitive to the compounds of tomato flower volatiles compared to honey bees, and honey bees showed aversion to some compounds of tomato flower volatiles. The findings indicated that compounds of flower volatiles significantly influenced bee foraging preference for tomato.

Tissue-Specific Emission of (E)-Α-bergamotene Helps Resolve the Dilemma when Pollinators Are Also Herbivores

Abstract:More than 87% of flowering plant species are animal-pollinated [1] and produce floral scents and other signals to attract pollinators. These floral cues may however also attract antagonistic visitors, including herbivores [2]. The dilemma is exacerbated when adult insects pollinate the same plant that their larvae consume. It remains largely unclear how plants maximize their fitness under these circumstances. Here we show that in the night-flowering wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata, the emission of a sesquiterpene, (E)-α-bergamotene, in flowers increases adult Manduca sexta moth-mediated pollination success, while the same compound in leaves is known to mediate indirect defense against M. sexta larvae [3, 4]. Forward and reverse genetic analyses demonstrated that both herbivory-induced and floral (E)-α-bergamotene are regulated by the expression of a monoterpene-synthase-derived sesquiterpene synthase (NaTPS38). The expression pattern of NaTPS38 also accounts for variation in (E)-α-bergamotene emission among natural accessions. These results highlight that differential expression of a single gene that results in tissue-specific emission of one compound contributes to resolving the dilemma for plants when their pollinators are also herbivores. Furthermore, this study provides genetic evidence that pollinators and herbivores interactively shape the evolution of floral signals and plant defense.

Abstract:Objective:To determine and analyze the volatile compounds of twelve common species of bee pollen.Methods:The volatile compounds in twelve common species of bee pollen were analyzed and compared by GC-MS combined with simultaneous distillation and solvent extraction(SDE).Results:A total of 74 volatile components were determined in samples,including of 41 relatively common components and 33 relatively specific components.The analyzed compounds were mainly composed of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, lipids, benzenes, phenols and carboxylic acids,et al.,and pollen samples had quite different profiles.Relevant specific ingredients were characterized in pollen of Fagopyrum esculentum L, Helianthus annuus L., Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn,Rosa rugosa,Schisandra chinensis,and Vicia faba L.Conclusion:The volatile compounds tends to be species-specific.A relative food safety of bee pollen was indicated,as prohibited substances in daily used essences and pesticide residues were nearly inexistence in pollen volatiles.
Pollinator Preferences for Floral Volatiles Emitted by Dimorphic Anthers of a Buzz-Pollinated Herb

Abstract:Floral scents attract pollinators to plant rewards; in nectarless flowers, pollen grains are the only reward. Thus, pollen not only fertilizes ovules, but also feeds pollinators. This dilemma is resolved by specialization of anthers (i.e., heteranthery): feeding anthers that feed pollinators and pollinating anthers for fertilization. We hypothesized that the chemical composition of floral volatiles differs between the two types of anther and influences pollination preference for feeding anthers. We used Solanum rostratum as a study model because its heterantherous flowers produce a floral scent that suggests a close association with their pollinators. The main aim of this study was to determine the chemical composition of the two types of anther and to investigate how they influence foraging behaviour of pollinators. To characterize this composition, we used solid phase microextraction and hexane extraction followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. We registered 12 volatile compounds in S. rostratum floral extracts, mainly aromatic and sesquiterpene compounds. The proportion of these compounds differed between feeding and pollinating anthers. Some of these compounds were probably emitted by osmophores located in both anther types. Also, we used electroantennography to investigate Melipona solani antennal response to floral volatiles. The M. solani antennae are receptive to the highest floral extract dose tested. Finally, we conducted two behavioural bioassays to test bee attraction for each type of floral extract: a) multiple-choice in a feeding arena using M. solani and b) Y-olfactometer bioassay using Bombus impatiens. Both bee species preferred feeding anthers in bioassays. In conclusion, heteranthery involves chemical differentiation (i.e., proportion of volatiles compounds) in anther specialization that influences bee preference for feeding anthers over pollinating anthers.
Differences in the Chemical Composition of Melon (Cucumis melo L.) Nectar Explain Flower Gender Preference by Its Pollinator, Apis mellifera

Abstract:Melon is a pollinator-dependent crop that relies mainly on bees to set fruits. However, manselected varieties vary in their attractiveness to flower visitors, and some flower genders and melon types may be less visited than others, harming pollination. We investigated the nectar composition of male, female and hermaphrodite flowers of 270 individuals of five commercial melons Cucumis melo (Cantaloupe, Charentais, Galia, Piel de Sapo, and Yellow), and its role in flower visit by Apis mellifera foragers. We found that melon nectar is composed mainly of sugars and amino acids such as tyrosine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, and flavonoids kaempferol3-O-neohesperidoside, luteolin hexoside, and kaempferol rhamnoside. But the amount of these chemical compounds varies among the flower genders. We also developed an accurate regression model to predict the number of bee visits to melon flowers based on the nectar composition. Our results indicate that nectar composition plays little role in bee discrimination among flowers of different melon types but is essential to the honeybee choice between flower gender. The amounts of phenylalanine (49.40%) and tryptophan (12.05%) in the nectar are related to bee preference for hermaphrodite flowers. More visits to hermaphrodite flowers contribute to setting and developing well-formed fruits, increasing productivity.

Pesticide residues in nectar and pollen of melon crops: Risk to pollinators and effects of a specific pesticide mixture on Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae) micro-colonies

Abstract:Residues detected in pollen collected by honey bees are often used to estimate pesticide exposure in ecotoxicological studies. However, for a more accurate assessment of pesticides effect on foraging pollinators, residues found directly on flowers are a more realistic exposure approximation. We conducted a multi-residue analysis of pesticides on pollen and nectar of melon flowers collected from five fields. The cumulative chronic oral exposure Risk Index (RI) was calculated for Apis mellifera, Bombus terrestris and Osmia bicornis to multiple pesticides. However, this index could underestimate the risk since sublethal or synergistic effects are not considered. Therefore, a mixture containing three of the most frequently detected pesticides in our study was tested for synergistic impact on B. terrestris micro-colonies through a chronic oral toxicity test. According to the result, pollen and nectar samples contained numerous pesticide residues, including nine insecticides, nine fungicides, and one herbicide. Eleven of those were not applied by farmers during the crop season, revealing that melon agroecosystems may be pesticide contaminated environments. The primary contributor to the chronic RI was imidacloprid and O. bircornis is at greatest risk for lethality resulting from chronic oral exposure at these sites. In the bumblebee micro-colony bioassay, dietary exposure to acetamiprid, chlorpyrifos and oxamyl at residue level concentration, showed no effects on worker mortality, drone production or drone size and no synergies were detected when pesticide mixtures were evaluated. In conclusion, our findings have significant implications for improving pesticide risk assessment schemes to guarantee pollinator conservation. In particular, bee pesticide risk assessment should not be limited to acute exposure effects to isolated active ingredients in honey bees. Instead, risk assessments should consider the long-term pesticide exposure effects in both pollen and nectar on a range of bees that reflect the diversity of natural ecosystems and the synergistic potential among pesticide formulations.

Abstract:The melon fly, Zeugodacus cucurbitae (Coquillett) , is a major invasive pest, widely distributed in the Asia–Pacific region and some parts of Africa. Melon fly attractants could improve the effectiveness of current pest management measures. Previous studies have shown that some host fruits are attractive to melon flies but few have investigated the chemical compounds responsible for their attraction. In this study, we aimed to identify the volatile compounds from Luffa acutangula L that attract Z. cucurbitae . In headspace trapping, chemical profiling identified 19 compounds from ridge gourds, with 1-pentadecene being the major component. EAG results revealed that seven compounds elicited antennal responses in Z. cucurbitae , and significant differences in antennal responses between male and female Z. cucurbitae adults were recorded to p -xylene, alpha-pinene, and 1-octadecene. Behavioral experiments demonstrated that the EAG-active compounds methyl isovalerate and methyl myristate had either attractive or repellent effects on Z. cucurbitae at different concentrations, and 1-octadecene attracted Z. cucurbitae. Our findings provide a theoretical basis producing repellents or attractants for effective Integrated Pest Management of Z. cucurbitae.

Characterization of volatiles in strawberry varieties ‘Elsanta’ and ‘Sonata’ and their effect on bumblebee flower visiting

Abstract:The bumblebee Bombus terrestris is a general pollinator in Europe and also highly suitable as greenhouse pollinator of various agricultural and horticultural crops such as tomato, sweet pepper or strawberry. Here, we highlight the importance of volatile emissions for the attractiveness and pollination efficiency of strawberry varieties, starting from the unique observation that two related strawberry varieties are pollinated to a different extent when cultivated together. In a flight cage Fragaria × ananassa var. ‘Sonata’ was pollinated more frequently (>2 times) and with longer-duration visits (11.2 vs. 6.7 s) by B. terrestris as compared to var. ‘Elsanta.’ To investigate whether this visitation difference could be attributed to differential production of flower volatile compounds, we quantified and analyzed the floral emissions of both varieties. Samples of var. ‘Elsanta’ contained more green leaf volatiles such as E-2-hexenal (0.53 vs. 0 ng/3 flowers), Z-3-hexenol (2.26 vs. 0.20 ng/3 flowers) and Z-3-hexenyl acetate (2.15 vs. 0.46 ng/3 flowers) which are known to play a role in plant defense. In a third series of experiments, we determined olfactory responses of B. terrestris to some similar individual synthetic green leaf volatiles presented in a Y-tube olfactometer. B. terrestris workers responded in an aversive manner to these volatile compounds compared to purified air. Since the floral bouquet of var. ‘Elsanta’ contains more green leaf volatiles, bumblebees will exhibit a preference for var. ‘Sonata.’ Our observations suggest that the pollination preference for ‘Sonata’ is due to being ‘less repellent’ instead of ‘more attractive’ than ‘Elsanta,’ with variety-specific flower emissions lying at the basis.

Abstract:Pollinators seek high quality nectar and pollen rewards critical for their growth and reproduction. Volatile emissions from inflorescences may signal plant health and floral resource quality to these flower-visiting insects. To understand the relationship between floral volatile emission and pollinator preference in a field setting, we conducted a replicated garden experiment consisting of 18 native perennial species from three different plant families with varying nutritional resource quality. We collected flower-visiting insects and floral volatile emissions over two field seasons, detecting over 60 volatile compounds and over 150 insect species. We collated trait data of visiting insects (bee or non-bee, body size, degree of sociality, nesting behavior, and whether the visitor was non-native) and evaluated interactions between these traits and volatile composition. Among the insect traits, bees and larger visitors had negative associations with sesquiterpenes, while in contrast visitors with complex nesting behaviors and social insects had positive associations. When comparing plant traits with bee traits, bee visitors had negative associations with purple inflorescences and larger insects and social insects both had positive associations with yellow inflorescences. We tested for direct associations between volatile class and insect taxa and found that sesquiterpenes had a strong positive relationship with hoverfly presence. This work demonstrates the complexity of floral volatiles as signals for pollinating insects and how floral scent composition allows individual compounds to act synergistically or antagonistically. These results can help us to better understand pollinator preferences and visitation patterns in the broad context of chemical ecology.

Meaningful Words in Crowd Noise: Searching for Volatiles Relevant to Carpenter Bees among the Diverse Scent Blends of Bee Flowers

Abstract:Olfactory cues constitute one of the most important plant-pollinator communication channels. Specific chemical components can be associated with specific pollinator functional groups due to pollinator-mediated selection on flower volatile (FV) emission. Here, we used multivariate analyses of FV data to detect an association between FVs and the worldwide distributed pollinator group of the carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.). We compiled FVs of 29 plant species: 9 pollinated by carpenter bees, 20 pollinated by other bee pollinator functional groups. We tested whether FV emission differed between these groups. To rule out any phylogenetic bias in our dataset, we tested FV emission for phylogenetic signal. Finally, using field assays, we tested the attractive function of two FVs found to be associated with carpenter bees. We found no significant multivariate difference between the two plant groups FVs. However, seven FVs (five apocarotenoid terpenoids, one long-chain alkane and one benzenoid) were significantly associated with carpenter bee pollination, thus being "predictor" compounds of pollination by this pollinator functional group. From those, β-ionone and (E)-methyl cinnamate presented the highest indicator values and had their behavioural function assessed in field assays. Phylogenetic signal for FVs emission was weak, suggesting that their emission could result from pollinator-mediated selection. In field assays, the apocarotenoid β-ionone attracted carpenter bees, but also bees from other functional groups. The benzenoid (E)-methyl cinnamate did not attract significant numbers of pollinators. Thus, β-ionone functions as a non-specific bee attractant, while apocarotenoid FVs emerge as consistent indicators of pollination by large food-foraging bees among bee-pollinated flowers.

Effects of natural and synthetic alarm pheromone and individual pheromone components on foraging behavior of the giant Asian honey bee, Apis dorsata

Abstract:Social pollinators such as honey bees face attacks from predators not only at the nest, but also during foraging. Pollinating honey bees can therefore release alarm pheromones that deter conspecifics from visiting dangerous inflorescences. However, the effect of alarm pheromone and its chemical components upon bee avoidance of dangerous food sources remains unclear. We tested the responses of giant honey bee foragers, Apis dorsata, presented with alarm pheromone at a floral array. Foragers investigated the inflorescence with natural alarm pheromone, but 3.3-fold more foragers preferred to land on the 'safe' inflorescence without alarm pheromone. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis, we identified eight chemical components in the alarm pheromone, of which three components (1-octanol, decanal and gamma-octanoic lactone) have not previously been reported in this species. We bioassayed six major compounds and found that a synthetic mixture of these compounds elicited behaviors statistically indistinguishable from responses to natural alarm pheromone. By testing each compound separately, we show that gamma-octanoic lactone, isopentyl acetate and (E)-2-decen-1-yl acetate are active compounds that elicit significant alarm responses. Gamma-octanoic lactone elicited the strongest response to a single compound and has not been previously reported in honey bee alarm pheromone. Isopentyl acetate is widely found in the alarm pheromones of sympatric Asian honey bee species, and thus alarmed A. dorsata foragers may produce information useful for conspecifics and heterospecifics, thereby broadening the effects of alarm information on plant pollination.
Floral Volatiles in a Sapromyiophilous Plant and Their Importance in Attracting House Fly Pollinators

Abstract:Floral scent in sapromyiophilous plants often consists of complex blends with not only fetid (e.g., sulfides) but also sweet (e.g., terpenoids) volatile organic compounds, and a recent study suggests that both groups of compounds are involved in pollinator attraction. However, little is known about the number and identity of compounds involved in pollinator attraction in these deceptive plants that mimic breeding sites of fly pollinators. In the present paper, we studied flower volatiles of sapromyiophilous Periploca laevigata and their capability to elicit biological responses in one of the pollinator species, Musca domestica. Floral volatiles were collected by dynamic headspace and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), and electrophysiological (GC/EAD) and behavioral assays (two choice olfactometer) were conducted. In the floral scent of P. laevigata, we detected 44 compounds, of which indole, β-caryophyllene, and germacrene D, as well as dimethyl trisulfide, which was present in trace amounts, were electrophysiologically active in the antennae of M. domestica. However, when we evaluated in behavioral experiments the attractiveness of the electrophysiologically active compounds (complete mixture against partial mixtures or against single compounds), we found that indole was the only attractive compound for the flies.

Abstract:Although the roles of volatile compounds have been examined separately in plant-herbivore or plant-pollinator interactions, few studies have focused on how plant scents can attract effective pollinators, repel ineffective pollinators, and defend against attacks by insect herbivores. We explored the functional significance of volatile compounds that impart a strong odor to Elsholtzia rugulosa, a shrub species in southwestern China. We monitored the pollinating honey bee Apis cerana, as well as two occasional visitors - Vespa velutina and a Bombus sp. - and an herbivorous beetle Oxycetonia jocunda. Behavior experiments using Y-tubes showed that honey bees were attracted primarily by floral scent while hornets and bumble bees were repelled by both the flowers and leaves. Analysis via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that these tissue types differed in their compositions and relative amounts of volatile compounds. When the plants were damaged, the average relative amounts of Elsholtzia ketone rapidly increased in the flowers and leaves. Furthermore, herbivorous beetles were strongly repelled by damaged tissues, suggesting a potential defense signaling function by these compounds. Our findings again demonstrate that scents have multiple functions in the interactions among plants and insects.

Abstract: is an obligate ectoparasite of honey bees and shifted from its original host to the new host in the first half of the twentieth century. The host shift has resulted in a great threat to the health and survival of colonies worldwide. Chemical signals play a crucial role in all aspects of the life cycle, including host finding. However, the chemical cues that affect the host finding behavior of mites are still not fully understood. In this study, we systematically profiled the headspace volatiles of both worker and drone larvae of the two honey bee species by using solid phase micro-extraction coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS), and then used electrophysiological recording and Y-tube olfactometer bioassay to study the potential roles of the selected compounds. The chemical profiling showed that there were four aliphatic esters, ethyl myristate (EM), methyl palmitate (MP), ethyl palmitate (EP), and ethyl oleate (EO) commonly detected from all four types of larval hosts. Among them, EM was a new substance identified from honey bee headspace volatiles. Results from electrophysiological recordings indicated that all the aliphatic esters could elicit significant responses of pit organs on its forelegs. Moreover, behavioral analyses revealed that EM could significantly attract at a medium dosage (10 µg), while MP had no observable effect on the mites and both EP and EO were able to repel the parasites. Our findings suggest an important role of host-derived aliphatic esters in host finding, and provide new chemicals for monitoring and control.
Bumblebee electric charge stimulates floral volatile emissions in Petunia integrifolia but not in Antirrhinum majus

Abstract:The timing of volatile organic compound (VOC) emission by flowering plants often coincides with pollinator foraging activity. Volatile emission is often considered to be paced by environmental variables, such as light intensity, and/or by circadian rhythmicity. The question arises as to what extent pollinators themselves provide information about their presence, in keeping with their long co-evolution with flowering plants. Bumblebees are electrically charged and provide electrical stimulation when visiting plants, as measured via the depolarisation of electric potential in the stem of flowers. Here we test the hypothesis that the electric charge of foraging bumblebees increases the floral volatile emissions of bee pollinated plants. We investigate the change in VOC emissions of two bee-pollinated plants (Petunia integrifolia and Antirrhinum majus) exposed to the electric charge typical of foraging bumblebees. P. integrifolia slightly increases its emissions of a behaviorally and physiologically active compound in response to visits by foraging bumblebees, presenting on average 121 pC of electric charge. We show that for P. integrifolia, strong electrical stimulation (600-700 pC) promotes increased volatile emissions, but this is not found when using weaker electrical charges more representative of flying pollinators (100 pC). Floral volatile emissions of A. majus were not affected by either strong (600-700 pC) or weak electric charges (100 pC). This study opens a new area of research whereby the electrical charge of flying insects may provide information to plants on the presence and phenology of their pollinators. As a form of electroreception, this sensory process would bear adaptive value, enabling plants to better ensure that their attractive chemical messages are released when a potential recipient is present.
Impact of Chronic Exposure to Two Neonicotinoids on Honey Bee Antennal Responses to Flower Volatiles and Pheromonal Compounds

Abstract:Volatile compounds provide important olfactory cues for honey bees ( Apis mellifera L.), which are essential for their ecology, behavior, and social communication. In the external environment bees locate food sources by the use of floral scents, while inside the hive, pheromones such as the queen mandibular pheromone (QMP) and alarm pheromones serve important functions in regulating colony life and inducing aggressive responses against intruders and parasites. Widely reported alterations of various behaviors in- and outside the hive following exposure to pesticides could therefore be associated with a disturbance of odor sensitivity. In the present study, we tested the effects of neonicotinoid pesticides at field concentrations on the ability of honey bees to perceive volatiles at the very periphery of the olfactory system. Bee colonies were subjected to treatments during the summer with either Imidacloprid or Thiacloprid at sublethal concentrations. Antennal responses to apple ( Malus domestica L.) flower volatiles were studied by GC-coupled electro-antennographic detection (GC-EAD), and a range of volatiles, a substitute of the QMP, and the alarm pheromone 2-heptanone were tested by electroantennography (EAG). Short-term and long-term effects of the neonicotinoid treatments were investigated on bees collected in the autumn and again in the following spring. Treatment with Thiacloprid induced changes in antennal responses to specific flower VOCs, with differing short- and long-term effects. In the short term, increased antennal responses were observed for benzyl-alcohol and 1-hexanol, which are common flower volatiles but also constituents of the honey bee sting gland secretions. The treatment with Thiacloprid also affected antennal responses to the QMP and the mandibular alarm pheromone 2-heptanone. In the short term, a faster signal degeneration of the response signal to the positive control citral was recorded in the antennae of bees exposed to Thiacloprid or Imidacloprid. Finally, we observed season-related differences in the antennal responses to multiple VOCs. Altogether, our results suggest that volatile-specific alterations of antennal responses may contribute to explaining several behavioral changes previously observed in neonicotinoid-exposed bees. Treatment effects were generally more prominent in the short term, suggesting that adverse effects of neonicotinoid exposure may not persist across generations.
Selection of key floral scent compounds from fruit and vegetable crops by honey bees depends on sensory capacity and experience

Abstract:Flowers have complex odours often comprising hundreds of volatile compounds. Floral scents are species-specific, and vary also among populations, varieties, sexes or lines, as well as with phenology. Honey bees, Apis mellifera, generally associate only a few key compounds among the complex floral scent with the food reward which guides their foraging choices. How these key compounds are selected remains partially unexplained, despite their crucial role in influencing foraging. Using electrophysiological techniques and behavioural assays, we identified the key bioactive compounds that bees detected with their antennae and that were associated with appetitive responses from four fruit crops and three vegetable crops. Three quantities of identified key volatile compounds were assayed with the two methods in each of four different seasons with experienced foragers. Whether the selection of these key compounds is determined by the sensory capability of the bee or influenced by its foraging experience was assessed by comparing experienced and naïve bees. Our results showed that experienced foragers were electrophysiologically-sensitive to a specific set of key compounds for each crop, independent of variation in quantity among several varieties. Experienced foragers responded to these compounds in all seasons, with increased electrophysiological amplitude with increasing quantities. Behavioural appetitive responses varied amongst compounds and seasons, revealing preferences based on associative learning. Naïve bees that were exposed to compounds and subsequently learned them, tended to be overall more sensitive. We discuss our results based on the identity of each bioactive compound and their presence in nature. Preferences for specific floral compounds based on sensory biases exist and associative learning may reinforce behavioural attraction depending on foraging experience in each season.

Abstract:Volatile odors from flowers play an important role in plant-pollinator interaction. The honeybee is an important generalist pollinator of many plants. Here, we explored whether any components of the odors of a range of honeybee-pollinated plants are commonly involved in the interaction between plants and honeybees. We used a needle trap system to collect floral odors, and GC–MS analysis revealed nonanal was the only component scent detected in 12 different honeybee-pollinated flowers and not present in anemophilous plant species. For Ligustrum compactum , blooming flowers released significantly more nonanal than buds and faded flowers. For Sapium sebiferum , nonanal release through the day correlated with nectar secretion. Experimentally increasing nectar load in flowers of Sapium sebiferum , Ligustrum compactum , and Castanea henryi increased nonanal levels also. Nonanal was also detected in flower nectar and honeys from experimental colonies. Electroantennogram recordings and behavioral observations showed that untrained honeybees could detect and were strongly attracted to nonanal. We argue that nonanal persists in both honey and nectar odors facilitating a learned association between nonanal and food reward in honeybees.

Abstract:Abstract Floral scents shape plant-pollinator interactions. Although, populations of the same species can vary in their floral scent, little is known about how this variation affects pollinator visitation. In this study, we compare the scents emitted by buzz-pollinated Solanum rostratum (Solanaceae) in two areas of its distribution (Mexico and USA), and investigate how these differences in scent affect pollinator preferences and attraction. We determined the variation of floral volatile compounds using hexane extraction followed by gas chromatography coupled with spectrometry. We also performed a field cage multiple-choice bioassay and a Y-tube behavioural bioassay using Bombus impatiens. We recorded 13 volatile compounds in floral extracts for plants from both ranges that varied qualitative and semi-quantitatively among populations. We found that in the field cage experiment, bumble bees visited plants from the USA populations more frequently than plants from Mexican populations. However, bees showed no difference in preference between extracts from Mexican or USA flowers. We conclude that although bees show differential visitation to whole plants of the different regions, variation in floral extract alone does not translate into differences in preference by B. impatiens. The potential effects of variation in floral scent on the other native bee pollinators remain to be assessed.
