Abstract:Most cases of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are able to be diagnosed through regular surveillance in an identifiable patient population with chronic hepatitis B or cirrhosis. Nevertheless, 50% of global cases might present incidentally owing to symptomatic advanced-stage HCC after worsening of liver dysfunction. A systematic search based on PUBMED was performed to identify relevant outcomes, covering newer surveillance modalities including secretory proteins, DNA methylation, miRNAs, and genome sequencing analysis which proposed molecular expression signatures as ideal tools in the early-stage HCC detection. In the face of low accuracy without harmonization on the analytical approaches and data interpretation for liquid biopsy, a more accurate incidence of HCC will be unveiled by using deep machine learning system and multiplex immunohistochemistry analysis. A combination of molecular-secretory biomarkers, high-definition imaging and bedside clinical indexes in a surveillance setting offers a comprehensive range of HCC potential indicators. In addition, the sequential use of numerous lines of systemic anti-HCC therapies will simultaneously benefit more patients in survival. This review provides an overview on the most recent developments in HCC theranostic platform.
Relationship Between Clinicopathologic Features and Neoplasm Recurrence,prognosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Liver Transplantation

Abstract:Objective To study the risk factors affecting neoplasm recurrence and survival of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)following liver transplantation(LT).Methods The clinicopatholo gic data,neoplasm recurrence and survival results of 118 patients with HCC receiving LT were retro- spectively analyzed and various clinicopathologic risk factors for neoplasm recurrence and survival were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis.Results The follow-up time ranged from 1 to 32 months.The recurrence rate was 37.3% and the mortality was 35.5%.The 12-,18-,24-month survival rate was 84.55%,70.30% and 62.24%,respectively.The 12-,18-,24-month neoplasm free survival rate was 69.05%,66.93% and 61.38%,respectively.In the univariate analysis,por- tal vein neoplasm thrombus(PVTT),Milan-criteria,neoplasm size,histological differentiation and pTNM stage were associated significantly with neoplasm recurrence,and PVTT,Milan-criteria,pre- operative alpha-fetoprotein(AFP),histological differentiation and pTNM stage were associated signif- icantly with survival rate;In the multivariate Logistic regression analysis,PVTT and histological dif- ferentiation were independent predictive factors of neoplasm recurrence,and multivariate Cox regres- sion analysis showed that PVTT and AFP independently associated with prognosis.Conclusions PVTT and histological differentiation are the most important predictive factors of neoplasm recur- rence,and PVTT and AFP independently predict the survival of patients undergoing LT.
Clonal Origin of Hepatocellular Carcinoma and Recurrence after Liver Transplantation

Abstract:BACKGROUND This study aimed to determine whether patterns of tumor clonal origin in pluri-nodular hepatocellular carcinoma (PNHC) could serve as an indicator of tumor recurrence following liver transplantation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Tumor tissue samples from 60 PNHC patients who underwent liver transplantation were examined. The diagnosis of patients conformed to the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) standards for pluri-nodular hepatocellular carcinoma. We performed loss of heterozygosity tests at multiple microsatellite sites to determine the clonal origins of the tumors. Clinical information, pathological data, preoperative serum alpha-feto protein (AFP) and postoperative follow-ups were obtained and correlations between the clonal origin of the tumor, tumor-free survival, pathological characteristics, and AFP levels in serum were studied. RESULTS A total of 165 tumor nodules were collected. Tumor clonal origins were identified as intrahepatic metastasis (IM; 41.67%), multicentric occurrence (MO; 55%) or unidentified (3.33%). Three-year tumor-free survival for the IM group was 48% compared to 75.76% in the MO group (p<0.05), while the occurrence of microscopic tumor thrombus was 100% and 3.03% (p<0.05) for these groups, respectively. The degree of tumor differentiation was 80% for the IM group and 18.18% for the MO group (p<0.05), while the mean AFP concentration for these groups was 226.80 μg/L (2.78-3000 μg/L) and 24.59 μg/L (1.16-531. 30 μg/L; p<0.05), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Clonal origin patterns can serve as important indicators to predict the recurrence of PNHC following liver transplantation. Taken together with pathological characteristics and preoperative serum AFP levels, the risk of recurrence can be established in advance.

Abstract:Liver transplantation (LT) is a viable therapeutic option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Many criteria, such as the Milan criteria and the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) criteria, have been established to select a subset of HCC patients who stand to benefit from LT. However, they are still insufficient for predicting HCC patients at high risk for recurrence and selecting those at low risk. Many molecules which are probable candidates for recognizing HCC patients at high or low risk for recurrence give a wider perspective to consider for LT indication. Besides working as biomarkers, most of them are also functionally involved in some important pathways which contribute to HCC metastasis. The complex network constituted by them shows a multichannel, multistep HCC metastatic process which indicates difficulty in tumor therapy. Given the efficacy of some molecular targeted drugs in the treatment of HCC or prevention of tumor recurrence after LT, the emerging molecular targeted therapy is also discussed in this review.

Abstract:Liver transplantation (LT) is an effective method for curing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However postoperative tumor recurrence can lead to higher mortality rates. To select suitable candidates for LT, the Milan Criteria (MC) were first proposed based on tumor morphological characteristics. For those patients who meet the MC, the MC can effectively reduce the postoperative tumor recurrence rate and improve the prognosis of patients undergoing LT. It has always been internationally recognized as the gold standard for selecting candidates for LT, marking a milestone in the history of LT for HCC. However, its strict conditions exclude some HCC patients who could benefit from LT. Therefore, comprehension consideration criteria, including serum biomarkers, tumor histology, and other factor, have been continuously proposed in addition to tumor morphology. This article summaries the prediction model for HCC recurrence after LT from five aspects: tumor morphology, serum markers, histopathology, cellular inflammatory factors and downstaging treatment before transplantation. The aim is to assist clinicians in accurately assessing HCC status, selecting appropriate liver transplant candidates, maximize graft and patients' survival, and optimizing the utilization of social health resources.

Abstract:Conventional selection criteria for liver transplantation in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on tumour size and number alone, do not consider vital surrogates of tumor biology like alpha‐fetoprotein (AFP) and tumour FDG‐18 PET avidity. We follow an expanded selection criteria for living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) in patients with cirrhosis and HCC (HCC‐cirr): no extrahepatic disease, no major vascular invasion, irrespective of tumour size and number. We analyzed survival outcomes in 405 HCC‐cirr patients (51% beyond Milan, 43% beyond UCSF criteria), and predictors of HCC recurrence. The 5‐yr overall (OS) and recurrence‐free (RFS) were 64% and 70%, respectively. Recurrence rate in 300 patients (excluding postoperative deaths, and those with deficient preoperative data) was 17.6%, with 3 preoperatively available factors predicting worse RFS; pre‐LT AFP ≥100 ng/ml (p=0.005, HR:2.190), tumour burden beyond UCSF criteria (p=0.001, HR:2.640), and FDG‐18 PET avidity (p=0.004, HR:2.442). Tumour FDG‐18 PET avidity and AFP ≥100 mg/ml predicted OS. A prognostic model based on the number of, and combination of the above pre operative risk factors for recurrence, was developed using a competing‐risk RFS model, and helped stratify patients into 3 risk groups: low risk (none or a single risk factor present, 9.3% recurrence), moderate risk (AFP≥100 ng/ml and FDG‐18 PET avidity, or beyond UCSF tumour and FDG‐18 PET avidity, 25% recurrence), and high risk (AFP≥100 ng/ml and beyond UCSF, or presence of all 3 risk factors, 46% recurrence). Conclusion: Acceptable post‐LDLT long term outcomes were achieved using our expanded selection criteria. Our prognostic model to predict recurrence based on pre operative biological and morphological factors could guide pre‐transplant management (downstaging vs. upfront LDLT), with the aim of reducing post‐LDLT recurrence.

Abstract:Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), des- γ -carboxy prothrombin (DCP), and lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive fraction of AFP (AFP-L3) have been developed with the intent to detect hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and for the surveillance of at-risk patients. However, at present, none of these tests can be recommended to survey cirrhotic patients at risk for HCC development because of their suboptimal ability for routine clinical practice in HCC diagnosis. Starting from these considerations, these markers have been therefore routinely and successfully used as predictors of survival and HCC recurrence in patients treated with curative intent. All these markers have been largely used as predictors in patients treated with hepatic resection or locoregional therapies, mainly in Eastern countries. In recent studies, AFP has been proposed as predictor of recurrence after liver transplantation and as selector of patients in the waiting list. Use of AFP modification during the waiting list for LT is still under investigation, potentially representing a very interesting tool for patient selection. The development of a new predictive model combining radiological and biological features based on biological markers is strongly required. New genetic markers are continuously discovered, but they are not already fully available in the clinical practice.
A Prognostic Fingerprint in Liver Transplantation for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Based on Plasma Metabolomics Profiling.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION:Tumor recurrence is a major cause of post-transplant mortality in liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study aimed to explore an effective noninvasive approach to accurately predict post-transplant tumor recurrence.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Metabolomics profiling was performed on pre-operative plasma from 122 HCC patients undergoing liver transplantation, 52 healthy controls (HC) and 25 liver cirrhosis (LC) patients.RESULTS:Five prognostic metabolites were identified by univariate analysis (P < 0.01), including phosphatidylcholine (PC) (16:0/P-18:1), PC(18:2/OH-16:0), PC(o-16:0/20:4), nutriacholic acid and 2-oxo-4-methylthiobutanoic acid. In the HCC group, PC(o-16:0/20:4), nutriacholic acid and 2-oxo-4-methylthiobutanoic acid were decreased, while PC(18:2/OH-16:0) was elevated compared with the LC group (e < 0.05). PC(16:0/P-18:1) was associated with tumor size, vascular invasion, and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR; P < 0.05). Moreover, PC(18:2/OH-16:0) was also related to tumor number and NLR (P < 0.05). Multivariate cox regression showed that PC(16:0/P-18:1), PC(18:2/OH-16:0), nutriacholic acid and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) were independent risk factors for tumor recurrence (P < 0.01). A prognostic fingerprint was established as a nomogram, which divided the patients into low risk (n = 45), moderate risk (n = 48) and highrisk groups (n = 29) with discriminated prognosis (P < 0.001). In patients fulfilling the Hangzhou criteria, the fingerprint/nomogram could also successfully stratify the patients into two groups with different recurrence risk (P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONS:The established pre-operative plasma fingerprint/nomogram is efficient in the prediction of recurrence risk, which could facilitate candidate selection in liver transplantation for HCC.

Abstract:Currently, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third most common cause of cancer death worldwide; 82% of the cases occur in developing countries, with 55% occurring in China [1]. Liver transplantation (LT), a potentially curative thera peutic modality of HCC, allows radical extirpation of the cancer and restores normal liver function. There is increasing evidence that, in the long term, LT will be the best therapeutic option for cirrhosis-associated HCC [2]. Unfortunately, the recurrence rate is high in HCC patients who undergo LT, which markedly reduces the longterm and medium-term survival of HCC patients [3]. Therefore, risk estimation of post-transplant tumor recurrence is an essential element in selecting a subset of HCC patients for LT. In clinical practice, this risk estimation is based on the number and size of the nodules, and microscopic/macroscopic vascular invasion; and selection criteria for LT have been established to select HCC patients according to these clinical features. The Milan criteria proposed by Mazzaferro and his colleagues – a single lesion of 5 cm or smaller in diameter, or three lesions each smaller than 3 cm in diameter, and without macroscopic vascular invasion – have been accepted worldwide for identifying candidates with good prognosis and low recurrence rates [4]. The Milan criteria were chosen in an attempt to minimize the difference in outcomes between transplanted HCC patients and those who did not have HCC, and these criteria have been adopted for organ allocation in the USA and in Europe [5,6]. Despite their proven utility, many recent data have suggested that these criteria are too restrictive, and many patients with tumor burdens outside the Milan criteria may potentially benefit from LT. Moreover, limiting LT to HCC patients within the Milan criteria may be unjust for those outside of the criteria who could have a favorable outcome with LT. Several expansions of the Milan criteria have been proposed. Yao and coworkers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF; CA, USA) reported that LT candidates with a solitary tumor of 6.5 cm in diameter or smaller, or three or fewer nodules with the largest lesion no larger than 4.5 cm in diameter, and a total tumor diameter no larger than 8 cm (the so-called UCSF criteria) achieved excellent results following LT that were not different from those for HCC patients within the Milan criteria [7]. Although the UCSF criteria have been validated by several groups [8], these criteria have not been accepted unanimously, which may be related to the results of a large multi center study that suggested the UCSF criteria to be associated with a 5-year survival rate of less than 50% when applied to preoperative evaluation [9]. In addition, the UCSF criteria allow LT for large tumors, which have been proven to be associated with post-transplant metastatic recurrence [10]. Lastly, both the Milan and the UCSF criteria exclude those patients with more than three nodules, who may obtain good outcomes if the tumors are of a reasonable size. Abstract:Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third highest cause of cancer-related mortality, and liver transplantation is the ideal treatment for this disease. The Milan criteria provided the opportunity for HCC patients to undergo LT with favorable outcomes and have been the international gold standard and benchmark. With the accumulation of data, however, the Milan criteria are not regarded as too restrictive. After the implementation of the Milan criteria, many extended criteria have been proposed, which increases the limitations regarding the morphological tumor burden, and incorporates the tumor’s biological behavior using surrogate markers. The paradigm for the patient selection for LT appears to be shifting from morphologic criteria to a combination of biologic, histologic, and morphologic criteria, and to the establishment of a model for predicting post-transplant recurrence and outcomes. This review article aims to characterize the various patient selection criteria for LT, with reference to several surrogate markers for the biological behavior of HCC (e.g., AFP, PIVKA-II, NLR, 18F-FDG PET/CT, liquid biopsy), and the response to locoregional therapy. Furthermore, the allocation rules in each country and the present evidence on the role of down-staging large tumors are addressed.

Abstract:Liver transplantation (LTx) is the best treatment for patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The Milan criteria positively influenced results of liver transplantation and were adopted by the majority of cancer centers, becoming the criterion standard treatment for early-stage HCC. Despite the use of restrictive criteria, recurrence is still high, affecting between 8% and 20% of cases, and is a significant predictor of survival after LTx. The diagnosis of both micro-and macro-invasion of vessels, which are significant factors in determining the frequency of recurrence and overall survival, significantly decreases the success of transplantation, causing an increase in mortality of 50% in comparison to recipients with no vascular invasion. The risk of recurrence depends on several factors, which are discussed in this review. The authors also discuss the clinical presentation and treatment methods of recurrence and its prognosis. In addition, the role of different models developed to identify groups of patients with high versus low risk of recurrence is discussed, enabling the planning of recommendations and screening protocols after transplantation to help early diagnosis and guide effective treatment. In the era of an increasing numbers of liver transplants due to HCC, the need to create robust screening tools is urgent.

Abstract:Molecular markers (biomarkers) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) metastasis and recurrence could provide additional information to that gained from traditional histopathological features. A large number of biomarkers have been shown to have potential predictive significance. One important aspect of this is to detect the transcripts of tumor-associated antigens (such as AFP, MAGEs, and CK19), which are proposed as predictive markers of HCC cells disseminated into the circulation and for metastatic recurrence. Another important aspect is to analyze the molecular markers for cellular malignancy phenotype, including DNA ploidy, cellular proliferation index, cell cycle regulators, oncogenes, and tumor suppressors (especially p53 gene), as well as telomerase activity. Molecular factors involved in the process of HCC invasion and metastasis, including adhesion molecules (E-cadherin, catenins, ICAM-1, laminin-5, CD44 variants, osteopontin), proteinases responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix (MMPs, uPA system), as well as angiogenesis regulators (such as VEGF, intratumor MVD), have also been shown to be potential predictors for HCC metastatic recurrence and clinical outcomes. One important new trend is to widely delineate biomarkers with genomic and proteomic expression with reference to predicting metastatic recurrence, molecular diagnosis, and classification, which has been drawing more attention recently. Body fluid (particularly blood and urine) testing for biomarkers is easily accessible and more useful in clinical patients. The prognostic significance of circulating DNA in plasma or serum and its genetic alterations is another important direction. More attention should be paid to these areas in the future. As understanding of tumor biology deepens, more and more new biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity for HCC metastatic recurrence could be found and routinely used in clinical assays. However, the combination of the pathological features and some of the biomarkers mentioned above seems to be more practical up to now.

Abstract:Liver transplantation is the best treatment option for cirrhotic patients with early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma, but it faces the problem of scarcity of donors and the risk of tumor recurrence, which affects between 15% and 20% of the cases, despite the use of restrictive criteria. The risk of recurrence depends on a number of factors, related to the tumor, the patient, and the treatment, which are discussed in this review. Some of these factors are already well established, such as the histopathological characteristics of the tumor, Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels, and waiting time. Other factors related to the biological behavior of the tumor and treatment should be recognized because they can be used in the refinement of the selection criteria of transplant candidates and in an attempt to reduce recurrence. This review also discusses the clinical presentation of recurrence and its prognosis, contributing to the identification of a subgroup of patients who may have better survival, if they are timely identified and treated. Development of recurrence after the first year, with AFP levels ≤ 100 ng/mL, and single site capable of locoregional therapy are associated with better survival after recurrence.

Abstract:In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), liver resection is potentially curative. Nevertheless, post-operative recurrence is common, occurring in up to 70% of patients. Factors traditionally recognized to predict recurrence and survival after liver resection for HCC include pathologic factors (i.e., microvascular and capsular invasion) and an increase in alpha-fetoprotein level. During the past decade, many new markers have been reported to correlate with prognosis after resection of HCC: liquid biopsy markers, gene signatures, inflammation markers, and other biomarkers, including PIVKA-II, immune checkpoint molecules, and proteins in urinary exosomes. However, not all of these new markers are readily available in clinical practice, and their reproducibility is unclear. Liquid biopsy is a powerful and established tool for predicting long-term outcomes after resection of HCC; the main limitation of liquid biopsy is represented by the cost related to its technical implementation. Numerous patterns of genetic expression capable of predicting survival after curative-intent hepatectomy for HCC have been identified, but published findings regarding these markers are heterogenous. Inflammation markers in the form of prognostic nutritional index and different blood cell ratios seem more easily reproducible and more affordable on a large scale than other emerging markers. To select the most effective treatment for patients with HCC, it is crucial that the scientific community validate new predictive markers for recurrence and survival after resection that are reliable and widely reproducible. More reports from Western countries are necessary to corroborate the evidence.

Association of Phenotypic Transformation of Circulating Tumor Cells and Early Recurrence in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Following Liver Transplantation

Abstract:Background: CTCs play a critical role in the diagnosis and prognosis of liver cancer. However, there are few studies on whether different types of CTCs can predict the prognosis in patients with HCC following LT. Methods: Retrospective data including CTCs detected by the CanPatrolTM platform combined with RNA-ISH were collected and analyzed on 56 patients from December 2016 to December 2019 at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China. Results: During the study period, fifty-six patients (51 males, 5 females) were included with an mean age of 52 +/- 9 years. The 1-, 2-and 3-year recurrence rates of postoperative interstitial CTC-positive and CTC-negative groups were 21.7% vs 10.8%, 37.5% vs 10.8% and 55.5% vs 10.8%, confirming a statistically sig-nificant difference between the 2 groups (p = 0.044). The 1-, 2-and 3-year recurrence rates of the increasing interstitial CTCs group were 25.2%, 36.9% and 66.9%, while 12.6%, 24.4% and 24.4% in the decreasing and unchanged group, indicating a significant difference (p = 0.038). Conclusion: CanPatrolTM platform presents a superior analytical sensitivity, and may be used as a dy-namic monitoring tool for CTCs. And interstitial CTCs which are more aggressive and metastatic caused by EMT can be regarded as a predictor of post-transplant tumor recurrence after LT for HCC. Artificial intelligence-based model for the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma after liver transplantation

Abstract:Background: Artificial intelligence-based models might improve patient selection for liver transplantation in hepatocellular carcinoma. The objective of the current study was to develop artificial intelligence-based deep learning models and determine the risk of recurrence after living donor liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: The study was a single-center retrospective cohort study. Patients who underwent living donor liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma were divided into training and validation cohorts (n = 192). The deep learning models were used to stratify patients in the training cohort into low- and high-risk groups, and 5-year recurrence-free survival was assessed in the validation cohort. Results: The median follow-up period was 59.1 (33.9-72.4) months. The artificial intelligence model (pretransplant factors) had an area under the curve of 0.86 in the training cohort and 0.71 in the validation cohort. The largest tumor diameter and alpha-fetoprotein level had the greatest Shapley Additive exPlanations values for recurrence (>0.4). The 5-year recurrence-free survival rates in the low- and high-risk groups were 92.6% and 45% (P < .001). In the second artificial intelligence model (pretransplant factors + grade), the area under the curve for the validation cohort was 0.77, with 5-year recurrence-free survival rates of 96% and 30% in the low- and high-risk groups (P < .001). None of the low-risk patients outside the Milan and University of California San Francisco Criteria had recurrence during follow-up. Conclusions: The artificial intelligence-based hepatocellular carcinoma transplant recurrence models might improve patient selection for liver transplantation.
Prediction of tumor recurrence by distinct immunoprofiles in liver transplant patients based on mass cytometry

Abstract:Recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation (LT) is a marker of poor prognosis. However, the reliable biomarkers of post-LT HCC recurrence remain to be identified. In this study, serial peripheral blood samples from the LT recipients with and without HCC recurrence were collected at five time points. Single-cell mass cytomertry (CyTOF) was utilized for the in-depth analysis of peripheral blood monocellular cells (PBMCs). CyTOF analysis showed that at 3 weeks post-LT, the activated immune cell population was increased, while the fraction of immune cells with suppressive functions (myeloid-derived suppressive cells) was reduced. The post-LT immune composition in patients with LT for HCC was enormously different from that in patients with LT for causes other than HCC. Furthermore, at 3 weeks after LT, compared with patients without recurrence, the patients with HCC recurrences were high in two subsets of T cells: CD57+ HLA-DR+ CD8+ and CD28+γδ. The CD57+ HLA-DR+ CD8+ T cells presented high levels of perforin, granzyme B, and Ki-67 and displayed a highly cytotoxic and proliferative phenotype, while the CD28+γδ T cells had reduced levels of IFN-γ and, hence, were less activated compared to CD28- cells. Based on these findings, we concluded that analyzing the PBMCs of LT recipients by CyTOF can predict the post-LT HCC recurrence. The distinct immune features can stratify patients with the risk of HCC recurrence at 3 weeks after LT, which will help clinician in further management plan and improve the prognosis of patients.
New prognostic biomarkers of mortality in patients undergoing liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma

Abstract:The outcome prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing liver transplantation (LT) was classically established using various macromorphological factors and serum alpha-fetoprotein levels prior to LT. However, other biomarkers have recently been reported to be associated with the prognosis of HCC patients undergoing to LT. This review summarizes clinical data on these new biomarkers. High blood levels of malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, caspase-cleaved cytokeratin-18, soluble CD40 ligand, substance P, C-reactive protein, and vascular endothelial growth factor, increased neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio and platelet to lymphocyte ratio in blood, high peripheral blood expression of human telomerase reverse transcriptase messenger ribonucleic acid, and high HCC expression of dickkopf-1 have recently been associated with decreased survival rates. In addition, high blood levels of des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin, and high HCC expression of glypican-3, E-cadherin and beta-catenin have been associated with increased HCC recurrence. Additional research is necessary to establish the prognostic role of these biomarkers in HCC prior to LT. Furthermore, some of these biomarkers are also interesting because their potential modulation could help to create new research lines for improving the outcomes of those patients.
