Abstract:The reuse of sewage sludge is still a challenging issue for wastewater treatment plants. In this study, a composite catalyst (FeOCl-SBC) was innovatively synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade organic pollutants in wastewater, which was obtained by sludge-derived biochar (SBC) modified by iron oxychloride (FeOCl). The addition of FeOCl triggered the increase of carbonyl groups (CO) on biochar, which promoted the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and accelerated the catalytic rate. Compared with SBC/PMS (0.0993 min−1) and FeOCl/PMS (0.0215 min−1) systems, the kinetic reaction rates of FeOCl-SBC/PMS (0.2107 min−1) for organic pollutants were increased by 2.1 and 9.8 times, respectively. FeOCl-SBC/PMS system had a wide pH range (3–9) and maintained 85% removal rate after 10 cycles. CO groups and Fe species (Fe3+/Fe2+) played an important role in the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radical (O2 •-) in FeOCl-SBC/PMS system. This work provides a viable strategy for the resource utilization of sludge and efficient treatments of organic wastewater.

Abstract:The persulfate-based advanced oxidation process is a promising technology for water treatment, while its effectiveness depends mainly on the activation efficiency of catalysts and the oxidant yield derived from persulfate. Thus, exploration of efficient and cost-effective activators for persulfate decomposition is highly desired. In this work, biochar, which was synthesized via a facile one-pot pyrolysis of sewage sludge, was proven to be an efficient persulfate activator for pollutant degradation. For a representative endocrine disrupting pollutant, bisphenol A, an average removal rate of 3.21 mol BPA per mol oxidant per h could be achieved by peroxymonosulfate in a wide pH range of 4.0-10.0 at a biochar dosage of 0.2 g L-1. Also, a high mineralization efficiency of similar to 80% (total organic carbon removal) was obtained within 30 min. A further catalytic mechanism study demonstrated that singlet oxygen, which was catalytically produced by the ketone structure inside the biochar, was the main reactive species responsible for bisphenol A degradation. More importantly, metals in the sludge precursor were found to play an important role in the active site formation during the pyrolysis of raw sludge. This work not only provides a novel value-added reuse approach for sewage sludge as an efficient persulfate activator but also would be beneficial for further designing and fabricating carbon-based persulfate catalysts.
Persulfate activation by sludge-derived biochar for efficient degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol: performance and mechanism

Abstract:Porous sludge biochar (PSDBC) and zero-valent iron (ZVI) supported on porous sludge biochar composite (ZVI@PSDBC) were synthesized using municipal sludge through pyrolysis under N2 atmosphere, which manifested upgraded performance in persulfate (PS) activation for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation. The 2,4-DCP (50 mg/L) could be almost completely removed within 20 min under relatively low PS dosage (0.5 mmol/L) in both PSDBC/PS and ZVI@PSDBC/PS systems, and the mineralization rate could respectively approach 73.7% and 91.6% in 60 min. Combined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) characterization and electron spin-resonance (ESR) detection, electrochemical analysis, the radical and non-radical pathways in the catalytic systems were discussed. Graphitized structure and superior conductivity made PSDBC and ZVI@PSDBC not only act as electron donors in PS activation to create radicals (mainly SO4·- and ·OH), but also as "mediators" to facilitate the direct electron transfer from 2,4-DCP to the catalysts-PS complexes. The C=O groups of PSDBC and ZVI@PSDBC aided in the production of 1O2. Meanwhile, zero-valent iron nanoparticles promoted the formation of radicals as the reactive sites of PS, resulting in the most effective 2,4-DCP degradation in the ZVI@PSDBC/PS system. The stability and practicability of sludge biochar materials had been demonstrated in reusability and actual wastewater experiments. The findings provided a promising way for the reuse of municipal sludge and effective PS activation in wastewater treatment.
Developing a high-quality catalyst from the pyrolysis of anaerobic granular sludge: Its application for m-cresol degradation

Abstract:This study proposes a novel approach for utilizing granular sludge discharged from anaerobic reactors to prepare an effective and stable catalyst for the removal of refractory contaminants in catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO). By implementing the response surface methodology, the experimental conditions for m-cresol degradation in CWPO with a HNO3-modified sludge carbon (GSC-M) as catalyst were explored. The removal efficiencies for m-cresol and total organic carbon (TOC) were 100% and 91.4%, respectively, at the optimal conditions of 60 °C for 120 min with a pH of 3, H2O2 dosage of 1.85 g/L, and catalyst dosage of 0.75 g/L. A continuous experiment was conducted for 6 d to investigate the durability and catalytic performance of GSC-M, resulting in a TOC removal above 90% with the catalyst maintaining its original morphology. GSC-M catalyst exhibited excellent stability and low iron leaching (0.34%). The high catalytic degradation could be attributed to a high content of iron species, various types of surface functional groups, porous structures, and the π–π interaction between aromatic clusters in sludge carbon and the benzene ring of m-cresol. Interestingly, GSC-M catalyst exhibited magnetic properties which are beneficial for recycling. Based on the identified intermediates, a possible degradation pathway of m-cresol was proposed.

Activation of persulfate by iron‐loaded soybean straw biochar for efficient degradation of dye contaminants: Synthesis, performance, and mechanism

Abstract:Biochar loaded with metal ions has been widely used to activate persulfate to degrade organic pollutants. However, the preparation conditions of catalysts are always controversial. In this study, the co‐heating conditions of soybean straw with high carbon and low nitrogen and nano‐iron oxide were systematically discussed by response surface method, and an efficient catalyst (Fe@BC) was obtained. Fe@BC can effectively activate sodium persulfate (PS) and degrade three synthetic azo dyes (Methyl orange (MO), Amino black 10B (AB10B), and Orange II) and rhodamine B (RhB). Under the optimum conditions, the removal rate of total organic carbon of these four dyes reached 41.1%–89.8% and the final degradation rate could reach 100%. The physicochemical properties of Fe@BC were studied by SEM, BET, XRD, XPS and TGA. The results revealed that the specific surface area of Fe@BC was 195.6m2/g. Further, reducing iron oxide by C generated C0.09Fe1.91 and zero‐valent iron. Free radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements showed that the main reactive oxide species (ROS) in the Fe@BC/PS system were hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2). Finally, Several Fe@BC modification systems were explored, the optimum pH of Fe@BC/PS system was analyzed, and the effects of Fe@BC and PS dosage on degradation performance were also studied. This study provides a scientific basis for the production of efficient catalysts and biochar energy, and an effective treatment scheme for printing and dyeing wastewater.

Abstract:A novel approach of ball milling and oxalic acid was employed to modify sludge-based biochar (BOSBC) to boost its activation performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). 98.6% of SMX was eliminated by PMS/BOSBC system within 60 min. Furthermore, PMS/BOSBC system was capable of maintaining high removal rates for SMX (>88.8%) in a wide pH range from 3 to 9, and displayed a high tolerance to background electrolytes including inorganic ions and humic acid (HA). Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, in-situ Raman characterization and PMS decomposition experiments confirmed that the non-radicals of 1O2 and surface-bound radicals were the main contributors to SMX degradation by PMS/BOSBC system. The results of ecotoxicity assessment illustrated that all transformed products (TPs) generated in PMS/BOSBC system were less toxic than that of SMX. After five reuse cycles, PMS/BOSBC system still maintained a high removal rate for SMX (77.8%). Additionally, PMS/BOSBC system exhibited excellent degradation performance for SMX in various real waters (Yangtze River water (76.5%), lake water (74.1%), tap water (86.5%), and drinking water (98.1%)). Overall, this study provided novel insights on non-metal modification for sludge-based biochar and non-radical mechanism, and offered a feasible approach for municipal sludge disposal.

Abstract:Activation of peroxymonosulfate by heterogeneous catalyst is an efficient process for organic pollutants removal. However, it is difficult for solid-liquid separation of the heterogeneous catalysts in slurry-like batch reaction. In this work, CoS 2 particles were deposited onto an air -laid cloth (denoted as CoS 2 -ALC) and were used as a catalyst for activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Unlike traditional slurry-like batch reaction forms, a shallow continuous flow reactor was designed for the installation of a CoS 2 -ALC, thereby improving the activation efficiency of persulfate and rapid solid-liquid separation. The degradation kinetics constant for carbamazepine (CBZ) by the CoS 2 -ALC/PMS process was 0.0748 min -1 , which is 374, 150, 150 times higher than that the CoS 2 - ALC adsorption process, PMS/ALC oxidation process and PMS alone process, respectively. The significantly enhanced degradation efficiency was due to the S in CoS 2 promoting the cycling of Co 2+ /Co 3+ , thereby enhancing the generation of free radical. Parameters such as CoS 2 deposition amount, PMS concentration, water flow rate, water flow height, water flow direction, solution pH, humic acid and anions that affecting the degradation efficiencies were studied. In addition, the degradation by-products of CBZ as well as their toxicity were detected, and a possible degradation pathway were proposed. Finally, expanded outdoor experiments and cycling experiment demonstrated that the CoS 2 -ALC/PMS process is potentially useful in practical settings of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Converting industrial sludge into catalytic materials for water purification is a promising approach to simultaneously realize effective disposal of sludge and resource of water. However, manipulating the high efficiency remains a huge challenge due to the difficulty in the active sites control of the sludge. Herein, we proposed a constitutive modulation strategy by the combination of hydrothermal and pyrolysis (HTP) for the fabrication of defects-assistant Fe containing sludge-derived carbon catalysts on upgrading performance in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for pollutant degradation. Adjustable defects on dyeing sludge-derived carbon catalysts (DSCC) were achieved by introducing oxygen or nitrogen functional precursors (hydroquinone or p -phenylenediamine) during hydrothermal processes and by further pyrolysis, where O was detrimental while N was beneficial to defect generation. Compared to the DSCC with less defects (DHSC-O), the defect-rich sample (DHSC-2N) exhibited superior catalytic performance of PMS activation for bisphenol A (BPA) elimination ( k = 0.45 min −1 , 2.52 times of DHSC-O), as well as 81.4% total organic carbon (TOC) removal. Meanwhile, the degradation capacity was verified in wide pH range (2.1–8.1) and various aqueous matrices, reflecting the excellent adaptability and anti-interference performance. Furthermore, the continuous-flow experiments on industrial wastewater showed synchronous BPA and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal, implying great potential for practical application. Solid electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and 57 Fe Mösssbauer spectra analysis indicated that the defects acted as secondary active sites for Fe sites, which were beneficial to accelerating the electron transfer process. The only Fe active sites preferred the radical pathway. The controllable reaction tendency provides possibilities for the on-demand design of sludge-based catalysts to meet the requirements of practical wastewater treatment under Fenton-like reaction.

Abstract:Catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) enhanced by swirl flow (SF-CWPO) was developed for the first time to explore the degradation of m-cresol in 3%iron/activated carbon catalysed Fenton reaction. Under the conditions of catalyst dosage of 0.6 g/L, H2O2 dosage of 1.5 mL/L, pH = 6 and reaction time of 20 min, the degradation rate of m-cresol and total organic carbon in 100 mg/L m-cresol solution reaches 81.5% and 82%, respectively. The reaction speed in the SF-CWPO system with an independently designed cyclone reactor was two times faster than the traditional CWPO systems. In addition, via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the degradation product, the possible degradation pathway for m-cresol was proposed. The proposed SF-CWPO can potentially be an efficient and economical method to treat organic pollutants in wastewaters.

Abstract:The disposal and resource utilization of sewage sludge (SS) have always been significant challenges for environmental protection. This study employed straightforward pyrolysis to prepare iron-containing sludge biochar (SBC) used as a catalyst and to recover bio-oil used as fuel energy. The results indicated that SBC-700 could effectively activate persulfate (PS) to remove 97.2% of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) within 60 min. Benefiting from the appropriate iron content, oxygen-containing functional groups and defective structures provide abundant active sites. Meanwhile, SBC-700 exhibits good stability and reusability in cyclic tests and can be easily recovered by magnetic separation. The role of non-radicals is emphasized in the SBC-700/PS system, and in particular, single linear oxygen (1O2) is proposed to be the dominant reactive oxygen. The bio-oil, a byproduct of pyrolysis, exhibits a higher heating value (HHV) of about 30 MJ/kg, with H/C and O/C ratios comparable to those of biodiesel. The energy recovery rate of the SS pyrolysis system was calculated at 80.5% with a lower input cost. In conclusion, this investigation offers a low-energy consumption and sustainable strategy for the resource utilization of SS while simultaneously degrading contaminants.

Abstract:Sewage sludge represents a promising substrate, meriting investigation for its nutrient content and potential for repurposing. Nitrogen-doped biochar (NSC) was synthesized from dewatered sludge over a range of pyrolysis temperatures, spanning 400–800 °C. This study explores the efficacy of NSC in enhancing the removal of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) through the integrated processes of adsorption and persulfate (PS) activation, marking its inaugural investigation in this work. The adsorption behavior was best described by both the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Freundlich isotherm model. Under conditions with an unadjusted pH value, [PS] at 2 mM, [NSC] at 5 g/L, and [2,4-DCP] at 100 mg/L, the NSC800 (pyrolyzed at 800 °C)/PS system achieved a complete removal of 2,4-DCP within 120 minutes. The results from radical quenching tests, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and electrochemical analysis indicated that 2,4-DCP degradation occurred via both radical and non-radical mechanisms. Among the nitrogen species, graphitic N was identified as the predominant PS activation site. The NSC800/PS system demonstrated notable catalytic efficiency and stability in the removal of 2,4-DCP, maintaining its efficacy in the presence of Cl - , NO 3 - , H 2 PO 4 - , and CO 3 2- . Significantly, the optimal reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE = 72.059%) was observed at the minimal PS concentration. This research introduces a novel methodology for municipal sludge valorization, proposing an economical biochar designed for the combined adsorption and catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Coking wastewater sludge possessed potential environmental hazards and pyrolysis was a desirable approach which could converted it into one functional carbonous material. The sludge-based biochar (SC-N3) originated from the feedstock of sludge from the regenerated water treatment had various iron-containing species and exhibited the effective catalytic ability. Compared with the degradation of the four pollutants (i.e., phenol, pyridine, quinoline and indole) alone, the mixed of the four pollutants in simulated coking wastewater exhibited a prominent different degradation trend, where the removal rates of indole and quinoline were enhanced from 45% and 30% to 98.9% and 82.3%, respectively. The quinone intermediates from phenol degradation, played a critical role in enhancing the removal rates of indole and quinoline as the electron transfer medium. Both the free radical pathway dominated by •OH and non-radical pathway with 1 O 2 play the main role in indole degradation, while •OH was the main factor in the catalytic degradation of phenol, quinoline and pyridine. By analysis the intermediates elucidated by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra, the degradation molecular characteristics and pathways of the four pollutants in simulated coking wastewater were deciphered. The findings indicated that the catalyst SC-N3 prepared from the coking wastewater sludge presented unique catalytic properties and possessed a promising application in the degradation of refractory wastewater.

Abstract:The development of efficient, low-cost, and environmentally friendly catalysts has the potential to significantly enhance the persulfate-based advanced oxidation technology for wastewater treatment. In this study, chitosan gel was ultilized as the biomass to be pyrolyzed by two-step pyrolysis method at 600 °C and 800 °C to produce biochar (BC-800). Results from the SEM, TEM, BET, Raman, and XPS characterizations showed that the BC-800 had a surface area of 1748 m 2 /g and a hierarchical pore structure with co-existing macropores, mesopores, and micropores, as well as an obvious graphitic carbon, pyridinic N, and graphitic N configurations. The prepared biochar was found to activate persulfate (PS) for rapid degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol, with 90% of pollutants removed in 5 min due to the excellent mass transfer facilitated by the abundant pores. Chemical quenching experiments, EPR detection, and electrochemical analysis indicated that the degradation process was triggered by a nonradical pathway, in which the biochar acted as an electron transfer shuttle between the oxidant and pollutant. This electron transfer mechanism not only enabled the degradation system have a wide pH range for application, but it also demonstrated high resistance to inorganic anions in the aquatic environment. This research is expected to enhance the preparation method of hierarchical porous biochar and provide effective technical support for the biochar-activated PS for water purification.

Abstract:Degradation of organic pollutant through catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO) is becoming more and more important in modern industry. As a commonly used organic synthetic material, excessive discharge of m-cresol may lead to severe damage of the environment and become a potential threat to human health. In this study, m-cresol was degraded over novel iron loaded carbon nanotube microfibrous composite (Fe-CNT-MF) catalyst packed fixed bed reactor. The kinetic parameters were first optimized, and then the deactivation mechanism of catalyst was also studied. The optimization model showed that total organic carbon (TOC) conversion of m-cresol degradation can reach about 70% under optimum conditions. Then the catalyst deactivation test was conducted with four consecutive runs (32 hours in total). Fe-CNT-MF performed high m-cresol and TOC conversions (99% and 40%, respectively) as well as high H2O2 decomposition efficiency (100%) with no iron leaching. Besides, the effect of co-existing organic pollutants on m-cresol degradation was investigated with presence of 4-Ethylphenol and 2,5-dimethylphenol. Fe-CNT-MF exhibited good catalytic activity in multi-pollutant wastewater with 99% conversion for all pollutants. Finally, deactivation analysis results showed that the deactivation mechanism of Fe-CNT-MF included carbon deposition, surface property change and additional oxygen functionalities. A regeneration study was proceeded to further confirm the suggested mechanism, indicating that Fe-CNT-MF has a good regenerability.

Abstract:Excess sludge produced from biological wastewater treatment plant in petroleum industry is a kind of hazardous solid waste. Converting the sludge into biochar catalysts may help to reduce its environmental risk, recover resources and increase economic efficiency. However, the role of the sludge biochar in persulfate activation remains unclear, limiting its application in removing organic pollutants from water body. In this study, metal-rich petrochemical sludge was used to produce activated sludge biochar (ASC) via a two-step method of pyrolytic carbonization (400 °C-800 °C) and subsequent KOH activation (abbreviated as ASC 400-800). The physio-chemical properties of ASC 400-800 were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and Raman. The chloramphenicol (CAP) removal performances of ASC 400-800/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems were evaluated. Results showed that porous sludge biochar was successfully prepared by the two-step method. At 800 °C, the specific surface area of ASC reached the highest value of 202.92 m2 g-1. At 600-800 °C, Fe3O4, Fe0, and graphitized carbon were formed in ASC. Among ASC 400-800, ASC 800 exhibited the best CAP removal performance in ASC 800/PMS system by adsorption combined with catalytic degradation. The optimal conditions identified for 0.31 mM CAP removal were ASC 800 2.0 g L-1, PMS 6.2 mM, and pH 2.0. SO4•-, •OH, and 1O2 may contribute to CAP degradation. The degradation pathways of CAP were proposed based on the identified degradation intermediates. Overall, this study confirmed that porous biochar derived from petrochemical sludge was an effective adsorbent or PMS catalyst to remove organic pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:Environment-friendly and cost-effective disposal and reutilization of sludge wastes are essential in wastewater treatment processes (WWTPs). Converting activated sludge into biochar via thermochemical treatment is a promising technology for waste management in WWTPs. This review summarizes the compositions of sludge, the dewatering methods, and the thermochemical methods which influence the structures, chemistry, and catalytic performances of the derived biochar. Moreover, the physiochemical characteristics and chemical stability of sludge biochar are discussed. Catalytic applications of biochar are highlighted, including the reaction mechanisms and feasibility for catalytic removal of organic contaminants. High-temperature carbonized sludge biochar exhibits excellent performance for persulfate activation in advanced oxidation processes due to the graphitic carbon structure, newly-created active sites, and fine-tuned metal species. Therefore, the sludge biochar can be produced via cost-effective and eco-friendly approaches to immobilize harmful components from sludge and remediate organic pollution in wastewater, offering a sustainable route toward sludge reutilization into value-added products for water purification.

Abstract:The reuse of activated sludge as a solid waste is severely underutilized due to the limitations of traditional treatment and disposal methods. Given that, the sulfur-containing activated sludge catalyst doped with cobalt (SK-Co(1.0)) was successfully prepared by one-step pyrolysis and calcinated at 850 ℃. The generation of CoSx was successfully characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating that the sulfur inside the sludge was the anchoring site for the externally doped cobalt. Cobalt (Ⅱ) (Co2+), as the main adsorption site for peroxymonosulfate(PMS), formed a complex (SK-Co(1.0)-PMS* ) and created the conditions for the generation of surface radicals. The SK-Co(1.0)/PMS system showed high degradation efficiency and apparent rate constants for Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) (91.56% and 0.187 min-1) and Sulfadiazine (SDZ) (90.73% and 0.047 min-1) within 10 min and 30 min, respectively. Three sites of generation of 1O2, which played a dominant role in the degradation of SMX and SDZ in the SK-Co(1.0)/PMS system, were summarized as:sulfur vacancies (SVs), the Co3+/Co2+ cycles promoted by sulfur(S) species, oxygen-containing functional groups (C-O). The degradation mechanisms and pathways had been thoroughly investigated using DFT calculations. In view of this, a new idea for the resource utilization of activated sludge solid waste was provided and a new strategy for wastewater remediation was proposed.

Abstract:The exploitation of cost-effective and environmentally friendly biochar catalysts is of major importance for the oxidative treatment of toxic organic wastewater and the resource utilization of waste biomass. In this work, sewage sludge and bagasse waste were co-pyrolyzed into a novel biochar catalyst (SB-BC-900) for efficiently activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade bisphenol AF (BPAF) in wastewater. Compared with single sludge biochar (S-BC-900), SB-BC-900 had a larger cumulative pore volume, more oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) and higher graphitization degree, with a significantly higher catalytic capacity. SB-BC-900 enabled rapid degradation of BPAF within 10 min at a low PMS dosage (molar ratio [PMS]: [BPAF] = 2.67:1). There was mainly the non-free radical pathway dominated by singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) in the SB-BC-900/PMS system. Graphitic carbon (sp 2 C=C) and OFGs on SB-BC-900 played a crucial part in the catalytic degradation of BPAF. A green approach is provided to resource waste biomass for efficient wastewater treatment in this work.

Abstract:With the development of methanol-to-olefin (MTO) process, the effective disposal of wastewater was one key factor for the long-period and benign development of this technology. Herein, a sludge-based biochar catalyst (GSC-P) was synthesized and used in photo-Fenton reaction for the degradation of MTO wastewater from the outlet of a biological aerated filter. More iron was distributed on the surface of GSC-P catalyst, facilitating the photo-Fenton oxidation of MTO wastewater, with chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal rate of 75.4% and total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of 62.5%. The 2223 unique molecular formulas assigned by a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) in the original MTO wastewater showed that CHO compounds shared the lowest peak numbers (20.2%) but the highest peak abundance (51.6%) among the four groups. Besides, lipids, unsaturated hydrocarbons, lignins and proteins were the main structural types. After photo-Fenton treatment of 60 min, there were 56.7%–74.0% of compounds removed by the analysis of van Krevelen diagram, indicating that the MTO wastewater was degraded efficiently. Three possible evolution processes of dissolved organic matters during the photo-Fenton reaction were disclosed at the molecular-level.

Abstract:Traditional sludge treatment methods have problems in terms of environmental safety and cost-effectiveness. In this study, we followed the principle of "waste for waste" to synthesize magnetic sludge biochar (FSBC800) from biochemical sludge and Fenton sludge to activate persulfate (PMS) to remove persistent pollutants. Tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) was degraded up to 90.9% by FSBC800 using an active PMS system in just 30 minutes. This removal rate is higher than that of Fenton sludge biochar and biochemical sludge biochar by 2.7 and 1.8 times, respectively. The self-contained Fe in Fenton sludge formed evenly distributed Fe3O4 particles, while the biochemical sludge provided a large number of oxygen-containing functional groups, which increased the reactive active sites of FSBC800 and improved the catalytic performance. The dominant role of SO₄•⁻, •OH, and ¹O₂ in the degradation of TC-HCl was demonstrated by the identification of reactive oxygen species and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis. By examining the intermediates, a potential TC-HCl degradation pathway was postulated. The catalyst has good reusability and practical application, and the removal of TC-HCl was still 84.8% after four replicated experiments. This study establishes a cost-effective, efficient, and recyclable biochar-based catalyst for water remediation, and at the same realizes resourceful utilization of sludge.
