Abstract:Titania (TiO2) is widely used in the chemical industry as an efficacious catalyst support, benefiting from its unique strong metal-support interaction. Many proposals have been made to rationalize this effect at the macroscopic level, yet the underlying molecular mechanism is not understood due to the presence of multiple catalytic species on the TiO2 surface. This challenge can be addressed with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring well-defined metal oxo/hydroxo clusters for supporting single-site catalysts. Herein we report that the Ti8(μ2-O)8(μ2-OH)4 node of the Ti-BDC MOF (MIL-125) provides a single-site model of the classical TiO2 support to enable CoII-hydride-catalyzed arene hydrogenation. The catalytic activity of the supported CoII-hydride is strongly dependent on the reduction of the Ti-oxo cluster, definitively proving the pivotal role of TiIII in the performance of the supported catalyst. This work thus provides a molecularly precise model of Ti-oxo clusters for understating the strong metal-support interaction of TiO2-supported heterogeneous catalysts.
Structural Determination of Catalytically Active Subnanometer Iron Oxide Clusters

Abstract:Supported subnanometer clusters exhibit superiority in catalytic performance compared to common nanoparticles, due to their higher fraction of exposed surfaces and larger number of active species at the metal support interface, responding to the size effect and the support effect in heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we report the synthesis of subnanometer iron oxide clusters anchored to the surfaces of two types of ceria nanoshapes (nanorods and nanopolyhedra), as well as the structure activity relation investigation for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. On the basis of the comprehensive structural characterizations including aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS), we demonstrated that the subnanometer clusters of iron oxide are stable and catalytically active for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reaction. Furthermore, it is identified that finely dispersed iron oxide clusters (Fe-O-x-Fe-y) consisted of partially reduced Fe delta+ (delta = 2.6-2.9) species in ceria nanorods are active for Fischer Tropsch synthesis; however, another type of iron oxide cluster (Fe-O-x-Ce-y) composed of fully oxidized Fe3+ ions strongly interacted with the ceria nanopolyhedra support but exhibits relatively poorer activity for the reaction. These results have broad implications on the fundamental understanding of active site of supported metal catalysts at the atomic level.
Blocking Metal Nanocluster Growth through Ligand Coordination and Subsequent Polymerization: The Case of Ruthenium Nanoclusters as Robust Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Abstract:Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding electrocatalytic activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. This work demonstrates the possibility of blocking Ru3+ ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation by a scalable three‐step process involving ligand coordination, polymerization, and pyrolysis. Metal nanoclusters providing maximized atomic surface exposure offer outstanding hydrogen evolution activities but their stability is compromised as they are prone to grow and agglomerate. Herein, a possibility of blocking metal ion diffusion at the core of cluster growth and aggregation to produce highly active Ru nanoclusters supported on an N, S co‐doped carbon matrix (Ru/NSC) is demonstrated. To stabilize the nanocluster dispersion, Ru species are initially coordinated through multiple Ru─N bonds with N‐rich 4′‐(4‐aminophenyl)‐2,2:6′,2′′‐terpyridine (TPY‐NH2) ligands that are subsequently polymerized using a Schiff base. After the pyrolysis of the hybrid composite, highly dispersed ultrafine Ru nanoclusters with an average size of 1.55 nm are obtained. The optimized Ru/NSC displays minimal overpotentials and high turnover frequencies, as well as robust durability both in alkaline and acidic electrolytes. Besides, outstanding mass activities of 3.85 A mg−1Ru at 50 mV, i.e., 16 fold higher than 20 wt.% Pt/C are reached. Density functional theory calculations rationalize the outstanding performance by revealing that the low d‐band center of Ru/NSC allows the desorption of *H intermediates, thereby enhancing the alkaline HER activity. Overall, this work provides a feasible approach to engineering cost‐effective and robust electrocatalysts based on carbon‐supported transition metal nanoclusters for future energy technologies.

Abstract:Molecular metal complexes on supports have drawn wide attention as catalysts offering new properties and opportunities for precise synthesis to make uniform catalytic species that can be understood in depth. Here we highlight advances in research with catalysts that are a step more complex than those incorporating single, isolated metal atoms on supports. These more complex catalysts consist of supported noble metal clusters and supported metal oxide clusters, and our emphasis is placed on some of the simplest and best-defined of these catalysts, made by precise synthesis, usually with organometallic precursors. Characterization of these catalysts by spectroscopic, microscopic, and theoretical methods is leading to rapid progress in fundamental understanding of catalyst structure and function, and to expansion of this class of materials. The simplest supported metal clusters incorporate two metal atoms eachthey are pair-site catalysts. These and clusters containing several metal atoms have reactivities determined by the metal nuclearity, the ligands on the metal, and the supports, which themselves are ligands. Metal oxide clusters are also included in the discussion presented here, with Zr6O8 clusters that are nodes in metal-organic frameworks being among those that are understood the best. The surface and catalytic chemistries of these metal oxide clusters are distinct from those of bulk zirconia. A challenge in using any supported cluster catalysts is associated with their possible sintering, and recent research shows how metal nanoparticles can be encapsulated in sheaths with well-defined porous structureszeolitesthat make them highly resistant to sintering.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with nodes consisting of zirconium oxide clusters (Zr-6) offer new opportunities as supports for catalysts with-defined, essentially molecular, structures. We used the precursor Rh(C2H4)(2) (acac) (acac is acetylacetonate) to anchor Rh(l) complexes to the nodes of the MOF UiO-67 and, for comparison, to the zeolite dealuminated HY. (DAY). These were characterized experimentally by measurement of catalytic activities and selectivities for ethylene hydrogenation and dimerization Iii-a once-through flow reactor at 298 K and 1 bar. The catalyst performance data are complemented with structural information determined by infrared and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopies and by calculations at the level of density functional theory, the latter carried out also to extend ithe investigation to a related MOF, NU-1000. The agreement between the experimental and calculated structural metrics is good, and the calculations have led to predictions of reaction mechanisms and associated energetics. The data demonstrate a correlation between the catalytic activity and selectivity and the electron-donor tendency of the supported rhodium (as measured by the frequencies of CO ligands bonded as probes to the Rh(l) centers), which is itself a measure of the electron-donor tendency of the support.
Structure optimization and support effect of metal-organic frameworks on Pd-Ir bimetallic nanoclusters

Abstract:Structure optimization of metal nanoclusters supported on metal-organic framework (MOFs) materials is very important for understanding and improving their both catalytic activity and selectivity. In this paper, a systematic study on the structure optimization of Pd-Ir bimetallic nanoclusters on MOFs (UiO-66) is presented based on basin hopping genetic algorithm (BHGA) and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. In addition, the structural characteristics, electronic properties and the support effect of UiO-66 on Pd-Ir nanoclusters are explored by analyzing the adsorption energy, binding energy, skeleton deformation energy and charge transfer. The results show that Pd-Ir clusters tend to bind with organic connectomes and remain thermodynamically stable near the support site. Meanwhile, among the three Pd-Ir alloy clusters supported on UiO-66, Pd 32 Ir 6 cluster has the strongest interaction with UiO-66 framework, while Pd 6 Ir 32 @UiO-66 has excellent thermodynamic stability. Importantly, the catalytic efficiency of is improved owing to the transferred electrons from Pd-Ir alloy clusters to UiO-66 framework. Furthermore, with the support effect of UiO-66 on Pd-Ir clusters, the Pd-Ir clusters dispersed in the UiO-66 pores to prevent metal clusters from agglomeration, but their thermodynamic stability are not changed after supporting on UiO-66 materials. In addition, the coordination number of Pd/Ir atoms in Pd-Ir clusters becomes fewer due to the support effect of UiO-66 on Pd-Ir nanoclusters. Abstract:Most metals with close packed atomic arrangements have been found to adopt ABC- or AB-stacking, since this arrangement affords the largest possible coordination number of 12. Here, based on first-principles calculations, we report for the first time the predicted high stability of AA-stacked Pt nanoclusters when supported on a graphene/Ru(0001) surface. Our theoretical analysis reveals that this unusual AA stacking is favored due to chemical bonding between Pt atoms and graphene on Ru(0001) surface, where vertically aligned p(z) orbitals of C atoms tend to hybridize with the d(z)(2) orbitals of the Pt atoms in the bottom most layer in the cluster. Consequently, d(z)(2)-d(z)(2) bonding between Pt layers is induced, leading to AA-stacking sequence in the Pt nanoclusters. Further analysis proves that these supported AA-stacked Pt clusters interact with adsorbed molecules or radicals in different strength and can, therefore, serve as high-selectivity catalysts for various applications.

Abstract:Ru is a metal of interest in catalysis. Monodisperse Ru 3 clusters as catalytic sites are relevant for the development of catalysts because clusters use significantly lower amounts of precious materials for forming active sites due to the small size of the cluster. However, retaining the mono-dispersity of the cluster size after deposition is a challenge because surface energy could drive both agglomeration and encapsulation of the clusters. In the present work Ru 3 clusters are deposited by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of Ru 3 (CO) 12 and cluster source depositions of bare Ru 3 onto radio frequency sputter-deposited TiO 2 (RF-TiO 2 ) substrates, TiO 2 (100), and SiO 2 . When supported on RF-TiO 2 , bare Ru 3 is encapsulated by a layer of titania substrate material during deposition with a cluster source. Ligated Ru 3 (CO) 12 is also encapsulated by a layer of titania when deposited onto sputter-treated RF-TiO 2 , but only through heat treatment which is required to remove most of the ligands. The titania overlayer thickness was determined to be 1-2 monolayers for Ru 3 (CO) 12 clusters on RF-TiO 2 , which is thin enough for catalytic or photocatalytic reactions to potentially occur even without clusters being part of the very outermost layer. The implication for catalysis of the encapsulation of Ru 3 into the RF-TiO 2 is discussed. Temperature-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), angle-resolved XPS, and temperature-dependent low energy ion scattering (TD-LEIS) are used to probe how the cluster-surface interaction changes due to heat treatment and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) was used to image the depth of the surface from side-on.

Abstract:Downsizing the racemic organic cage supports leads to stabilize a number of well‐dispersed, long‐term stable metal clusters of sub‐nano size (<0.7 nm) with high catalytic performance. This success relies on the enhanced binding power of nanosized cage supports to metal species, owing to the increased surface area over volume and the nanoconfinement from the intrinsic pores of organic cages. Manipulating Stabilities and Catalytic Properties of Trinuclear Metal Clusters Through Tuning the Chemical Bonding: H-2 Adsorption and Activation

Abstract:Chemical bonding involving metal-metal (M-M) and metal-ligand (M-L) interactions provides an opportunity to tune the stabilities and catalytic properties of metal clusters. We report here the electronic and bonding properties of a series of trinuclear clusters [M3X3(PR3)(3)](+) (M = Ni, Pd, Pt; X = F, Cl, Br, I; R = H) to explore the electronic effect on the adsorption and activation of H-2 and other small molecules. The chemical bonding model of M-3 is discussed in detail, and the formal +4/3 oxidation state of the metal element in the M-3 cluster is proposed. Metallic sigma-aromaticity is also found in the trinuclear clusters. We have shown that the stability and the catalytic activity of the trinuclear clusters can be tuned by altering the energies and compositions of M-M and M-L chemical bonding orbitals. The performance of H-2 dissociative adsorption on these clusters can be explained by the orbital interactions. Relativistic effects also play a significant role in determining the activity of H-2 adsorption. This finding provides an example for controlling catalytic properties through tuning chemical bonding of metal clusters.

Abstract:Facile sintering of atomically dispersed supported noble metal catalysts at catalytically relevant temperatures, particularly under reducing conditions, poses a challenge for their practical applications. Some ligands, such as carbonyls, aid in improving the stability at the expense of severely suppressing the catalytic activity. Here, we demonstrate that substitution of the carbonyl ligands with reactive acetylene ligands can maintain the atomic dispersion of the supported mononuclear rhodium complex under harsh reducing conditions (>573 K), as confirmed by in-situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies. In contrast, the supported rhodium carbonyl complex aggregates into nanoclusters under identical conditions. Furthermore, our results indicate that the acetylene ligands provide this anti-sintering ability while retaining the hydrogenation activity.

Abstract:Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is crucial to modulating the nature of metal species, yet the SMSI behaviors of sub-nanometer metal clusters remain unknown due to the difficulties in constructing SMSI at cluster scale. Herein, we achieve the successful construction of the SMSI between Pt clusters and amorphous TiO2 nanosheets by vacuum annealing, which required a relatively low temperature that avoids the aggregation of small clusters. In situ scanning transmission electron microscopy observation is employed to explore the SMSI behaviors, and the results reveal the dynamic rearrangement of Pt atoms upon annealing for the first time. The originally disordered Pt atoms become ordered as the crystallizing of the amorphous TiO2 support, forming an epitaxial interface between Pt and TiO2. Such SMSI state can remain stable in oxidation environment even at 400 °C. Further investigations prove that the electron transfer from TiO2 to Pt occupies the Pt 5d orbitals, which is responsible for the disappeared CO adsorption ability of Pt/TiO2 after forming SMSI. This work not only opens a new avenue for constructing SMSI at cluster scale but also provides in-depth understanding on the unique SMSI behavior, which would stimulate the development of supported metal clusters for catalysis applications.

A study of Pt, Rh, Ni and Ir dispersion on anatase TiO2(101) and the role of water

Abstract:Understanding how metal atoms are stabilized on metal oxide supports is important for predicting the stability of single-atom catalysts. In this study, we use scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to investigate four catalytically active metals - Platinum, Rhodium, Nickel and Iridium - on the anatase TiO2(101) surface. The metals were vapor deposited at room temperature in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions, and also with a background water pressure of 2x10-8 mbar. Pt and Ni exist as a mixture of adatoms and nanoparticles in UHV at low coverage, with the adatoms immobilized at defect sites. Water has no discernible effect on the Pt dispersion, but significantly increases the amount of Ni single atoms. Ir is highly dispersed, but sinters to nanoparticles in the water vapor background leading to the formation of large clusters at step edges. Rh forms clusters on the terrace of anatase TiO2(101) irrespective of the environment. We conclude that introducing defect sites into metal oxide supports could be a strategy to aid the dispersion of single atoms on metal-oxide surfaces, and that the presence of water should be taken into account in the modelling of single-atom catalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogenation reactions of ethene, propene, and toluene were used as probes of the catalytic properties of small clusters of rhodium (Rh6) and of iridium (Ir4 and Ir6) (as well as of larger aggregates of these metals) on oxide supports (gamma-Al2O3, MgO, and La2O3). The catalysts were characterized in the working state by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, providing evidence of the cluster structures and cluster-support interactions; by infrared spectroscopy, providing evidence of hydrocarbon adsorbates and possible reaction intermediates on the clusters; and by kinetics of the hydrogenation reactions. The EXAFS data indicate that the metal clusters, while remaining intact and maintaining their bonding to the support during catalysis, underwent slight rearrangements to accommodate reactive intermediates. As the concentrations of reactive intermediates such as pi-bonded alkenes and alkyls on the clusters increased, the cluster frames swelled, and the clusters flexed away from the support. The data indicate self-inhibition of reaction by adsorbed hydrocarbons and differences between ethene hydrogenation and propene hydrogenation that may arise primarily from different adsorbate-adsorbate interactions.

Abstract:Atomically precise metallic clusters offer total structural information lacking in metal oxide and nanoparticle catalysts. However, their use as heterogeneous catalysts requires accessible and robust catalytic sites, yet directing clusters into ordered and porous assemblies through functional control remains elusive. Herein, we report a supramolecular strategy to induce permanent porosity within assemblies of two cerium oxide clusters through the capping ligands used. Single-crystal X-ray crystallography and density functional theory calculations revealed cluster assemblies with accessible channels, while adsorption isotherms showed permanent porosity. The clusters exhibited a bulk modulus >5 GPa in variable pressure diffraction studies. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated mixed valency (Ce3+/Ce4+) and oxygen vacancies in the clusters. We benchmarked catalytic activities through the photooxidation of 2-propanol.

Abstract:Despite significant advances in the synthesis and structural determination of atomically precise metal clusters, few studies have explored their catalytic applications in industrially important reactions. Here, we report a thiolate-stabilized Ni cluster for the efficient hydrodesulfurization of thiophene under relatively harsh reaction conditions while maintaining its atomic structure, which was enabled by the on-and-off dynamic state of thiophene on the cluster. Through a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we elucidate the activated structure and the catalytic mechanism. The study highlights the great potential of structurally precise clusters for practical industrial applications.

Abstract:Atomically precise metal clusters stabilized by organic ligands have attracted extensive interest, and these monodisperse clusters have particular potential for providing insights into puzzling areas of heterogeneous catalysis such as inherent size polydispersity. In many traditional catalytic reactions, however, the reactivity of metal clusters is frequently found to be passivated, where the active sites on the surface metal atoms are blocked by the ligand molecules. Therefore, of particular interest are studies that involve triggering the catalytic ability of metal clusters, with no need to remove any ligands, via thermal treatments that usually destroy their atomically precise structures. Herein, with the determination of the structure of Ni-6(SR)(12) (where SR denotes thiolate), where Ni atoms are fully coordinated with the thiolate molecules, the catalytic activity of Ni-6(SR)(12) for nitriles hydrogenation toward primary amines could be significantly enhanced with the assistance of NH3 molecules that positively suppress the ligand-shielding effect.
Fundamental structural and electronic understanding of palladium catalysts on nitride and oxide supports

Abstract:The nature of the support can fundamentally affect the function of a heterogeneous catalyst. For the novel type of isolated metal atom catalysts, sometimes referred to as single-atom catalysts, systematic correlations are still rare. Here, we report a general finding that Pd on nitride supports (non-metal and metal nitride) always features a higher oxidation state compared to that on oxide supports (non-metal and metal oxide). Through thorough oxidation state investigations by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO-DRIFTS, and density functional theory (DFT) coupled with Bader charge analysis, it is found that Pd atoms prefer to interact with surface hydroxyl group to form a Pd(OH)x species on oxide supports, while on nitride supports, Pd atoms incorporate into the surface structure in the form of Pd−N bonds. Moreover, a correlation was built between the formal oxidation state and the computational Bader charge, based on the periodic trend in electronegativity.

Abstract:We discuss the impact of density functional electronic structure calculations for understanding the organometallic chemistry of transition metal (TM) surface complexes and clusters. Examples will cover three types of systems, mainly of interest in the context of heterogeneous catalysis: (i) supported carbonyl complexes of rhenium on MgO and of rhodium in zeolites, (ii) TM clusters with CO ligands and adsorbates, and (iii) metal clusters exhibiting chemical bonds with atomic carbon. The first group of case studies promotes the concept that surface groups of oxide supports are bonded to TM complexes in the same way as common (poly-dentate) ligands are bonded in coordination compounds. The second group of examples demonstrates various “ligand effects” of TM clusters. Finally, we illustrate how carbido centers stabilize TM clusters and modify the propensity for adsorption at the surface of such clusters.

Synergize Strong and Reactive Metal-Support Interactions to Construct Sub-2 nm Metal Phosphide Cluster for Enhanced Selective Hydrogenation Activities

Abstract:Strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) are crucial for stabilizing sub-2 nm metal sites, e.g. single atom (M1) or cluster (Mn). However, further optimizing sub-2 nm sites to break the activity-stability trade-off due to excessive interactions remains significant challenges. Accordingly, for the first time, we propose synergizing SMSI with reactive metal-support interactions (RMSI). Comprehensive characterization confirms that the SMSI stabilizes the metal and regulates the aggregation of Ni1 into Nin site within sub-2 nm. Meanwhile, RMSI modulates Nin through sufficiently activating P in the support and eventually generates sub-2 nm metal phosphide Ni2P cluster (Ni2Pn). The synergetic metal-support interactions triggered the adaptive coordination and electronic structure optimization of Ni2Pn, leading to the desired substrate adsorption-desorption kinetics. Consequently, the activity of Ni2Pn site greatly enhanced towards the selective hydrogenations of p-chloronitrobenzene and alkynyl alcohol. The formation rates of target products are up to 20.2 and 3.0 times greater than that of Ni1 and Nin site, respectively. This work may open a new direction for metal-support interactions and promote innovation and application of active sites below 2 nm.
