Abstract:Rapid urbanization and irrational land use seriously threaten ecological security. Quantitative analysis optimization of ecological security patterns (ESPs) could ensure the sustainable development of ecosystems. Identifying of ecological sources' thresholds and corridors is a difficult task. An integrated framework and analytical method are proposed here based on Geographic Information System (GIS) software, Python language, and a minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model to construct and quantitatively analyze ESPs. The model includes the following functions: (1) the delimitation of ecological patches by assessing regional habitat quality; (2) identification of ecological sources using patch numbers (PNs), proportional area, and a landscape connectivity index; (3) identification of a resistance surface coefficient with a night light index; and (4) extraction of key ecological corridors and nodes using a modified multiprocess and batch processing flow of MCR. Habitat quality was classed at middle and high levels, the minimum area threshold of ecological sources was 2 km2, and urban areas and highways were the main obstacles to sustainable development. Potential key ecological corridors were extracted. The method can provide technical support for regional infrastructure planning, landscape optimization, and regional development. Abstract:Given the important role of land ecosystem in social-economic progress at regional, national, and international scale and concurrent degradation of land ecosystems under rapid urbanization, a systematic diagnosis of land ecological security (eco-security) for sustainable development is needed. A catastrophe model for land ecological security assessment was developed in order to overcome the disadvantages in subjectivity and complexity of the currently used assessment methods. The catastrophe assessment index system was divided into hierarchical sub-systems under the pressure-state-response framework. The catastrophe model integrated multiple assessment indices of land eco-security according to the inherent contradictions and relative importance of indices without calculating weights. Specifically, membership degree of higher level index was calculated based on the membership degrees of lower level indices that were subjective to suitable model, such as cusp, fold, swallowtail and butterfly model. This model was applied to evaluate the state of land eco-security in Shanghai. Mann–Kendall’s test was utilized to characterize its temporal trend between 1999 and 2008. Significant downward trend was identified for land eco-security, in terms of pressure sub-index, state sub-index, response sub-index and synthetic index. All these implied that land ecosystem conditions were not optimistic for Shanghai and such situation should draw the attention of policy makers. The calculation procedure presented in this paper does not require a high level of technical expertise to determine the membership degree, making it simple and operational. Being applicable to similar land ecosystems, the catastrophe model is thus believed to provide an alternative approach to land eco-security assessment.
Spatiotemporal Evolution of Ecological Security in the Wanjiang City Belt, China

Abstract:Ecological security is the foundation and guarantee of sustainable development, and its importance is increasingly widely recognized and valued by the world. The Yangtze River Basin is an important ecological security barrier in China and the Wanjiang City Belt (WCB) along the Yangtze River is directly related to the ecological security pattern of the entire basin. Based on the Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model and a geographical information system (GIS) platform, an ecosystem security evaluation index system was constructed to measure and evaluate the evolution of ecosystem security in the WCB, China. Results showed that: 1) From 2000 to 2018, the overall level of ecological security in the study area was in a state of either early warning or medium warning, but the level of ecological security in each prefecture-level city was significantly different. 2) From the perspective of the evolution of the ecosystem, the value of its comprehensive evaluation index dropped from 4.255 in 2000 to 3.885 in 2018. From the perspective of subsystems, the value of Pressure comprehensive evaluation index is much higher than that of other subsystems, indicating that during the rapid development of the social economy, the pressure on the natural environment tended to rise, and triggered changes in the State and Response subsystems. 3) The coefficient of variation (CV) of the Driver was much higher than other factors influencing the ecological security system. There are large differences in the economic development and ecological evolution of the cities in the WCB. This study has improved the theoretical research on regional ecological security, and has certain practical guiding significance for building a beautiful, green and sustainable China and promoting global ecological security.

Evolutionary characteristics of ecosystem services and ecological risks at highly developed economic region: A case study on Yangtze River Delta, China

Abstract:Ecosystem services (ES) can mitigate ecological risks (ER), yet these services can also be affected by ER. Based on land use data, socioeconomic data, landscape index, and spatial analysis techniques such as spatial autocorrelation, we study the spatial and temporal characteristics of ES and ER in the Yangtze River Delta from 2000 to 2019. The conclusions are as follows: (1) During the study period, construction land has been growing rapidly, and the depth, complexity, and intensity of land use have been increasing. The reserve land resources in the Yangtze River Delta are scarce. (2) From 2000 to 2019, the ecosystem service value (ESV) has been declining, with a total loss of 107.562 billion RMB. The area of low ESV continues to grow rapidly, while the area of high ESV continues to shrink. High ecological risk potential exists in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas. (3) Although the ecological environment in economically developed areas is more fragile, the ecological risk potential can be reduced in two ways: strengthening urban clusters, thus improving cooperation and communication among them; and protecting ecosystems with high ES such as water area and forestland. When formulating regional development plans, in addition to socioeconomic benefits, managers and policy makers need to focus on natural benefits as well.
Spatial-temporal dynamics and scenario simulation of land ecological security: a case study of Deyang, Sichuan Province, China

Abstract:As a means of producing the resources required for human survival and development, land is the cornerstone of social development and an important part of the ecological environmental system. To measure the granularity and spatial differentiation of changes in the ecological security levels of the study area, this paper uses the PSR model. A kilometer grid is used as the evaluation unit, and a relative entropy theory is used to obtain the combined weight. The comprehensive index method is used to calculate the ecological security value of the land. Based on clarifying the dynamics of time and space, the spatial distribution of the ecological security levels in 2020 is simulated by the CA-Markov model. The results show the following: (1) the level of ecological security in the city of Deyang decreases from 0.580 in 2005 to 0.558 in 2015, showing a fluctuating downward trend, and different districts, cities, and counties and show varying trends. (2) During the study period, the area classified with a safe level decreased from 2853.72 km2 in 2005 to 1809.45 km2 in 2015, and the areas with critical safe, less safe, and unsafe levels all increased. The areas of decrease are mainly concentrated in the Jingyang District, Luojiang County, and Zhongjiang County. (3) The results of four proposed scenarios for future economic or environmental development are significantly different. Maintaining the status quo cannot change the declining trend in ecological security in the city of Deyang. A priority of economic development will lead to a significant decline in land ecological security. Establishing environmental protection as a priority can significantly change the ecological security of the land in the city. The results of the “comprehensive” scenario simulation are closest to the actual security values calculated for 2019, reflecting the trade-off between economic development and environmental protection. The research results can provide a reference for the evaluation and prediction of ecological security and provide theoretical guidance for the formulation of sustainable measures.

Abstract:Fewer studies on ecological security (ES) in border areas limit the synergistic development of border areas in the context of rapid globalization. The study of ES in border areas of southwest China can enrich the evaluation methods, summarize the knowledge related to ES in border areas, and provide references for similar areas in the world. Therefore, twenty-five international border counties in Yunnan Province were selected to establish a system to evaluate ES; an entropy weight TOPSIS model was used to evaluate the changes in ES from 2004 to 2019. Then, an obstacle degree model was used to diagnose the factors affecting ES. The state of ES was predicted by a gray prediction model (GM) (1,1) in 2025 and 2030. The results show that an improving ES situation presented a spatial distribution pattern of high to low from the southwest to the west and east. Various factors, including fixed assets investment, per-capita fiscal revenue, per-capita GDP, food production, and water regulation, created obstacles to a desirable ES in the study area. Although the ES of border areas will maintain an upward trend under the existing development model, the number of counties that will reach a secure state of ES in 2025 and 2030 is predicted to only be 1 and 2, respectively.

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities can greatly affect the ecological environment. As an ecological protection area, it is necessary to scientifically evaluate the landscape ecological risk (LER) in the Dongjiangyuan region to provide scientific guidance for regional sustainable development. In this study, the LER was calculated, and the spatial and temporal characteristics of the LER from 1985 to 2020 were analysed using geospatial techniques. The results show that the proportion of low-risk and extremely low-risk areas increased from 87.65% to 94.26% during the 1985-2020 period. The extremely high-risk and high-risk areas had a decreasing trend, and the extremely high-risk areas were concentrated in areas with impervious surfaces and croplands. The rate of risk was negative, especially in south-eastern Xunwu County, southern Dingnan County and central Anyuan County, indicating that the ecological risk has been greatly improved. The LER centre gradually migrated to the geometric centre of the study area. However, the gravity centre of extremely high risk and high risk remained in Xunwu County. The spatial agglomeration of LER changed significantly, and the overall difference between cold areas and hot areas decreased. The hot spot areas in the Dongjiangyuan region are key areas for ecological governance in the future.

Abstract:Monitoring ecological security in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) is the prime objective of the ecosystem research on the Yangtze River basin. The comprehensive dynamic evaluation model of ecological security based on the “Pressure-State-Benefit” and four dimensions of “time–space” was designed in this study. Furthermore, comparative analysis and coefficient of sensitivity (CS) were used to verify the rationality and scientificity of this model. This study interpreted and determined the land use data of the TGRA from 2000 to 2020. The coupling coordination degree model, the spatial correlation model and the cluster analysis model assisted in determining the spatial pattern distribution and dynamic interaction characteristics of ecological security at the grid-county-watershed scales in the TGRA. The analytical results demonstrated that the ecological security index (ESI) in the TGRA was generally not very high due to resource constraints and background environmental conditions. The ESI was significantly clustered in space. The initial impoundment of the TGRA significantly impacts ecological security. Implementing dot-shaped ecological restoration projects has greatly improved unsafe and low-security state areas. However, the non-significant growth in the high-security state level region can be attributed to the lack of overall planning and implementation scale. The ecological pressure caused by economic and social development in the main urban area has led to a substantial decline in regional ecological benefit. Therefore, it is necessary to balance the coordinated development relationship between economic-social and ecological benefit in the region. These findings will provide references and supportive data for environmental protection and ecological restoration in the TGRA.

Abstract:Ecological security (ES) is an important element in the construction of an ecological civilization and plays a vital role in ensuring the sustainable development of social economies. Further, ES is an important measure of regional sustainable development. Based on ecosystem theory, this study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework using the driving force-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) and slacks-based measure of data envelopment analysis (SBM-DEA) models. Taking the Three Gorges Reservoir Area as an example, the study develops an ES evaluation system and realizes a transformation from “efficiency” to “quality”.Gray correlation theory and spatial autocorrelation and are adopted to analyze the ecosystem's spatial–temporal evolution and driving factors. The results demonstrate that the overall level of ES in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area from 2010 to 2020 was good; however, the spatial distribution of ES revealed an unbalanced state. The influence of each subsystem on the result of the ES evaluation is state > response > impact > driving force > pressure. The spatial correlation analysis of ES in the Three Gorges Reservoir area exhibited a positive autocorrelation, and the agglomeration effect was significant; on this basis, the key factors affecting ES were identified. The ratio of environmental protection investment, sewage treatment rate, green coverage rate of built-up areas, proportion of primary industry in GDP, and proportion of tertiary industry in GDP had notable effects on the ES of the study area. The research contributes to the theory of ES and provides guidance for ecologically sustainable development.

Abstract:Located in an important biodiversity conservation area in the Yangtze River Delta, the habitats of many species have been severely eroded because of human activities such as tourism development. There is no relevant species conservation plan in place in the region, and scientific guidance on ecosystem change and corridor construction is urgently needed. In this study, we first assess ecosystem service functions based on the InVEST model; then, we assess ecological sensitivity and identify landscape resistance surfaces by constructing ecosystem sensitivity indicators; finally, we construct ecological security patterns by combining landscape resistance surfaces and circuit theory identification. The main results are as follows: (1) The high value area of ecosystem services is located in the southwest, while the northeast part of the study area has lower ecosystem services, and there is a trade-off between the ecosystem services in the study area. (2) There are 38 ecological sources in southern Anhui, with a total area of more than 5742.79 km2, that are the basic guarantees of ecological security, mainly located in the northeast of the study area, and woodland and grassland are the most important components, accounting for 18.4% of the total study area. (3) The ecological security pattern in the study area consists of 63 ecological sources, 37 important corridors, and 26 potential corridors, of which there are 28 pinch point areas and 6 barrier point patches in the study area, mainly located within Huangshan City and Xuancheng City. We recommend that when implementing restoration and rehabilitation measures in the future, policy makers should give priority to pinch points and barrier areas.

Abstract:The continuous expansion of modern cities not only leads to ecological degradation but also seriously threatens regional ecological security and sustainable development. The construction of ecological security patterns (ESPs) has emerged as a significant approach to alleviate or even solve the conflict between regional development and ecological protection. The Chengdu–Chongqing Economic Circle (CCEC) represents the core area of regional economic development strategy in western China, characterized by rapid economic growth from 2000 to 2020. This study integrates assessments of ecosystem services importance, eco-environmental sensitivity and landscape connectivity; uses circuit theory and hydrological analysis to establish a research framework for the spatiotemporal evolution of regional ESP; and develops an optimized ESP combined with the Major Function Oriented Zone. The results indicate that urban expansion significantly impacted the ESP of the CCEC between 2000 and 2020. The fragmentation and merging of ecological sources occurred simultaneously, the number of patches reduced by 28.13% from 64 to 46. The early ecological security network was compromised, leading to the disappearance or elongation of some ecological corridors. The number of ecological corridors decreased by 36.03% from 136 to 87; the total length was reduced by 29.92% from 7500.57 km to 5256.28 km. Urgent optimization of the ESP is needed, reducing the number of key ecological protection areas by 50% from 106 to 53 while increasing priority restoration areas by 13.51% from 37 to 42. The study also reveals the insufficiency of the current Major Function Oriented Zone in protecting linear corridors, necessitating focused attention on the protection and restoration of ecological sources and surrounding corridors in important development zones. Additionally, a spatial optimization strategy of "one shelter, two cores, and three regions" is proposed to enhance regional ecosystem stability and connectivity. The aim was to strike a balance between ecological protection and food security by recommending an ecological corridor width range of 30∼100 m. These research findings offer scientific guidance for ecological space protection and restoration in the CCEC, contributing to the enhancement of both scientific and rational ecological planning in rapidly urbanizing areas.

Abstract:China's urban economy has developed rapidly over the decades, and the Cheng-Yu urban agglomeration has become one of China's four typical urban agglomerations, with a large population and a high level of economic development. However, the conflict between humans and the environment is becoming increasingly prominent together with economic development. In order to protect the ecological environment in urban areas, thus scientific understanding and assessment of ecological vulnerability are beneficial to establishing regional conservation measures, and serve as a key means to maintain environmental health. Based on the "Sensitivity-Resilience-Pressure" (SRP) model, this study considered remote sensing, geographic and statistical data to construct an evaluation system for regional ecological vulnerability. In addition, the coupled AHP (Analytic hierarchy process)-Entropy weighting model was proposed to obtain the weight of each evaluation indicator and analyze the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of the ecological vulnerability of the study area during 2000–2020. The changes and the divergence pattern were depicted by the transfer matrix, dynamic degree and spatial auto-correlation. The results indicated that the ecological vulnerability of Cheng-Yu urban agglomeration is mainly mild and moderate, with an overall high distribution in Chongqing and Chengdu, while low in the central and north zone (e.g., Ziyang, Mianyang). It is consistent with the distribution of HH (High-High) and L-L (Low-Low) clusters, respectively, having a significant positive spatial correlation. In particular, the severely vulnerable area increased from 7059 km 2 in 2000 to 23553 km 2 in 2020, with an increased rate of 233.66 %. Combining the transfer matrix and dynamic degree, it was found that the ecological environment underwent a rapid deterioration followed by a slow recovery. This study provides a scientific reference for the ecological policy making which serves sustainable urban development.

Abstract:With the outbreak of the current global eco-environmental crisis, ensuring global and local ecological security (ES) has become a priority for many countries in the world. In the past few decades, social and economic development in China has induced many ecological and environmental problems, which have negatively impacted ES of China and the world. In recent years, with the increasing awareness of China's ecological and environmental protection, the Chinese government has actively participated in global ecological and environmental governance and raised ES to the height of national security. A systematic and comprehensive assessment of ES is the basis of ES assurance, which can enable governments to accurately grasp the ES status of different regions and adopt targeted management measures. The ecological footprint (EF) model is a mature model that has been widely used for ES assessment. Thus, this study used an EF model with localized parameters analyzing the spatiotemporal changes in China's ES from 2006 to 2016 on a provincial scale. Then, from an "occupation-carrying" perspective, this study explored the main aspect that induced changes in regional ES and identified the main type of ecological land that threatened regional ES. Results showed that a) during the study period, China's ES status showed a deteriorating trend and the current ES is not optimistic. However, the ecological carrying capacity of most provinces in China has increased, indicating that China's ecological and environmental protection has achieved initial results; b) currently, the provinces whose ES status are moderate unsafe and quite unsafe are mainly distributed in the eastern coastal region and the region near the boundary between the second and third ladders; c) the high-intensity occupation of the ecological environment and biological resources attributed to the rapid development of the social economy is the main cause for the negative changes in ES in most areas; d) for most provinces in China, cropland occupation and fossil energy consumption pose great threats to the regional ES status. China should jointly consider ES, energy security, and food security in its future development plans.

The non-significant correlation between landscape ecological risk and ecosystem services in Xi'an Metropolitan Area, China

Abstract:As critical prerequisite for sustainable development research of social ecosystem (SDSE), the relationship between landscape security pattern and ecosystem services should be explicitly evaluated to support SDSE research. However, the existing evaluation system lacking of integrating analysts of the factors led to vague knowledge of the SDSE mechanism. To tackle this issue, this study, therefore, explored the relationship between landscape ecological risk and ecosystem services (e.g. carbon sequestration, soil conservation, water yield, crop production and residential support) at Xi’an Metropolitan Area using remote sensing data in 2010 and 2020. The results show that the overall landscape ecological risk decreased from 0.2618 to 0.2479. Although the rapid development of urban leading improvement for landscape ecological security and residential support, the total ecosystem services has declined due to the decline in water yield and crop production. Preventing the landscape ecological risk on landscape fragmentation cannot improve the level of ecosystem services. Notably, the stronger interference of human activities overwhelmingly caused a single advantageous ecosystem services with extreme risk, while the less caused multiple advantageous ecosystem services of ecological regulation with medium–low level ecological risk. Additionally, the competitive relationship between the crop production and residential support would not produce higher risk led by the intervention of human activity. The integrating of crop production and carbon sequestration (or soil conservation) resulted in high risk. Using these results, a potential spatial plan of Xi'an Metropolitan Area is then made based on multiple advantageous areas of ecosystem services. This study benefits decision-making for regional comprehensive risk prevention, future spatial pattern planning and development orientation, and sustainable development research of social ecosystem.

A new multivariate index for ecological security assessment in the China-Myanmar border region

Abstract:The coordination of development efforts and ecological conservation in China's border regions is a significant challenge due to the overlap of biodiversity hotspots, ecologically fragile zones, and impoverished areas. Achieving the harmonious integration of ecological preservation and economic development relies on the fundamental assessment of ecological security (ES). However, comprehensive assessments of ES in border regions remain limited. This study introduces a new index, the multivariate ecological security index (MESI), which integrates ecosystem vigor, organization, elasticity, services and risk. Here, the MESI was utilized to assess the temporal and spatial changes in ES and its associated impact factors in the China-Myanmar border region (CMBR) from 2000 to 2020. The MESI provides a clear representation of the actual ES status in the CMBR, exhibiting a significant correlation with the eco-environmental quality index (EEQI; p < 0.01). The ES status exhibited notable spatial heterogeneity in the CMBR, consisting primarily of both relatively safe and safe levels, which accounted for approximately 85% of the total area. From 2000 to 2020, the CMBR experienced a gradual improvement in ES status, with the area experiencing an increase in the ES level accounting for 23.41% of the total area, which exceeded the proportion of the area experiencing a decrease in the ES level (4.71%). The combined impact of multiple factors exerted a greater influence on ES than did individual factors alone. Notably, human factors increasingly influenced the ES status during the study period. The results of this study provide valuable insights for ecological preservation and sustainable management in the CMBR, and the MESI can be extended to assess the ES of other regions.
Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Ecological Security Pattern of Urban Agglomerations in Yangtze River Delta Based on LUCC Simulation

Abstract:Urbanization has not only promoted economic development, but also significantly changed land use and development strategy. The environmental problems brought by urbanization threaten ecological security directly. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce changes in land use when constructing an ecological security pattern. This study takes the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration, one of the most economically developed regions in China, as the research area. Based on its land use status, the Cellular Automata–Markov model was used to predict the quantitative change and transfer of land-use types in 2025, and three types of land-use patterns were simulated under different scenarios. Combined with the pressure–state–response model, the Entropy TOPSIS comprehensive evaluation model is used to evaluate the three phases in the years of 2005, 2010, and 2015, and the results indicated that the safety level dropped from 85.45% to 82.94%. Five spatial associations were obtained from the spatial autocorrelation analysis using GeoDA, and the clustering distribution of the three phases was roughly the same. Based on the requirements of “Natural Growth” scenario, “Urban Sprawl” scenario, and “Ecological Protection” scenario, the transfer matrix of the various land-use types were modified rationally. The results of scenario simulations illustrated that the level of urbanization was inversely proportional to the level of ecological security. The surrounding cities in the northern part of Taihu Lake were developing rapidly, with low levels of ecological security. The hilly cities in the southern part, in contrast, developed slowly and had a high level of ecological security. Based on the temporal and spatial changes in the ecosystem, an ecosystem optimization model was proposed to determine the ecological functional areas. The nature of each functional area provided the basis to formulate urban construction and management plans and achieve sustainable urban development.

Abstract:In tandem with societal and economic progress, ecological and environmental issues have emerged as pivotal constraints to the sustainable development of China’s economy and society. While the impacts of land use are widely acknowledged as a significant factor in ecological changes, studies on ecological sensitivity often overlook the effects of land use edge dynamics in rapidly urbanizing, fragmented landscapes, leading to inadequate evaluation frameworks. This paper establishes an evaluation framework encompassing ecosystem importance-vulnerability-sensitivity to assess China’s ecological sensitivity in 2020 amid various external disturbances. The neighborhood effect method was employed to formulate a neighborhood matrix capturing interactions among various land use categories. This enabled the quantification of the impacts of interactions between different land use types on ecological sensitivity, subsequently leading to the correction of ecological sensitivity results in China. The findings indicate that the ecological sensitivity, when adjusted for the neighborhood effects method, offers more nuanced and reasonable details. The spatial variation of ecological sensitivity in China is noteworthy, with areas of extreme sensitivity and high sensitivity concentrated in the southeastern hills, northwestern mountains, Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau-Hengduan Mountains, northeastern mountains, and the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. The comprehensive evaluation results of ecological sensitivity revealed a trend of spatial distribution fragmentation, with extremely sensitive and highly sensitive areas primarily distributed in woodland and grassland, and less sensitivity observed in artificial land, water, and cropland. Further factor analysis of ecological sensitivity results identified that the significance of wind and sand fixation and soil conservation are crucial factors influencing ecological sensitivity, and the superposition of these factors enhances the explanatory power of ecological sensitivity. This study provides a scientific basis for preserving natural resources and managing ecological environments in China.

Abstract:Climate change and human activities have caused various ecological risks to coastal urban agglomerations. Ecological security refers to the state of health of an ecosystem and its integrity. An objective and comprehensive evaluation of ecological security is significant for protecting the structure and function of coastal ecosystems. The driving force–pressure–state–impact–response (DPSIR) model was used to construct a dynamic simulation model of ecological security in the Xiamen–Zhangzhou–Quanzhou region (XZQR), located on the eastern coast of China. The ecological security level (ESL) characteristics of the spatial and temporal patterns were evaluated by calculating the ecological security index (ESI). Obstacle factors were analyzed as well. The results show the following: (1) From 2011 to 2021, the average ESI rose from 0.238 to 0.686 and went through a relatively insecure stage (2011–2015), a critical stage (2016–2019), and a relatively secure stage (2020–2021). (2) The ESI level in Quanzhou was higher in the early stage, and the level of ecological security in Zhangzhou showed a significant rising trend, increasing by 0.541. Its increase depended on increases in the impact layer. (3) The impact layer is the main obstacle layer affecting the ESL, and the main obstacles include CO2 emissions (0.117), annual rainfall (0.091), general public budget expenditures (0.082), GDP growth rates (0.082), and green coverage in built-up areas (0.075). Therefore, we recommend promoting the complementary advantages of the XZQR and implementing ecological restoration projects.

Abstract:How to assort with the relationship between the urban construction and the maintenance of ecological security is a hot issue during the process of urbanization. The purpose of this study is to identify the key ecological land maintaining ecological security and to put forward some measures for environmental management. Based on the GIS technology, from the view of water security, biodiversity conservation, disaster protection, natural recreation security, and human disturbance, an integrated index is put forward to evaluate the ecological importance of regional space. Then, a GIS-based approach for evaluating ecological importance was created, with Xingguo county of China as a case study. The results show that the area of core eco-space in the study area accounts for 30% of the total area. These areas mainly consist of the core areas of regional river systems, wetlands, nature reserves, forest parks, and scenic spots and the endangered and protected zone of geological hazards. According to the spatial characteristics of ecological importance for different regions, this study proposes some zoning regulations and measures for environmental management.

Abstract:Ecological security is a prerequisite for the sustainable development of a region. The question of how to carry out a scientific and accurate ecological security assessment is therefore of great significance. Southwest China faces the dual challenges of maintaining ecological security and advancement of the economy. Thus, an evaluation of its ecological security status is essential. In this study, ecosystem services, ecological sensitivity, and landscape patterns were used to construct an integrated framework for assessing ecological security. The ecological security status of 549 counties (cities and districts) in Southwest China were evaluated for the years 2000, 2020, 2015, and 2018. Levels of ecological security in northern Guangxi, the western part of the Chengdu Plain, and the western and southern parts of Yunnan Province were generally higher than those in other areas. Conversely, levels of ecological security in western Sichuan Province, in metropolitan areas of Yunnan Province, and in the cities of Chengdu, and Chongqing were consistently low. From 2000 to 2018, the ecological security index (ESI) values of 52.82% of the study units concentrated in central and western Sichuan, eastern and southern Yunnan, and central and southern Guangxi increased, whereas those of 47.18% of study units concentrated in northeastern Sichuan, Chongqing, Guizhou, and northern Guangxi decreased. The level of ecological security in Southwest China is affected by the climate and by human activities. The following recommendations emerged from the study's findings for maintaining the region's ecological security. Local governments should strengthen the construction of cleaner industries, continue to return farmland to forests and promote crop rotation and fallow management, increase investments in and the development of nature reserves, implement outmigration schemes for ecologically fragile regions, and improve land conservation and intensive land use.
