Abstract:This study investigates spatiotemporal changes in air pollution (particulate as well as gases) during the COVID-19 lockdown period over major cities of Bangladesh. The study investigated the aerosol optical depth (AOD) from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Terra and Aqua satellites, PM2.5 and PM10 from Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), and NO2 and O3 from TROPOMI-5P, from March to June 2019–2020. Additionally, aerosol subtypes from the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder (CALIPSO) were used to explore the aerosol types. The strict lockdown (26 March–30 May 2020) led to a significant reduction in AOD (up to 47%) in all major cities, while the partial lockdown (June 2020) led to increased and decreased AOD over the study area. Significant reductions in PM2.5 (37–77%) and PM10 (33–70%) were also observed throughout the country during the strict lockdown and partial lockdown. The NO2 levels decreased by 3–25% in March 2020 in the cities of Rajshahi, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, and Mymensingh, in April by 3–43% in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Barisal, Bhola, and Mymensingh, and May by 12–42% in Rajshahi, Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Rangpur. During the partial lockdown in June, NO2 decreased (9–35%) in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, and Rangpur compared to 2019. On the other hand, increases were observed in ozone (O3) levels, with an average increase of 3–12% throughout the country during the strict lockdown and only a slight reduction of 1–3% in O3 during the partial lockdown. In terms of aerosol types, CALIPSO observed high levels of polluted dust followed by dust, smoke, polluted continental, and clean marine-type aerosols over the country in 2019, but all types were decreased during the lockdown. The study concludes that the strict lockdown measures were able to significantly improve air quality conditions over Bangladesh due to the shutdown of industries, vehicles, and movement of people.

Abstract:This study investigates the temporal and spatial variations in PM2.5 concentrations in Dhaka, Bangladesh, from 2001 to 2023 and evaluates the impact of meteorological factors and the effectiveness of mitigation strategies on air pollution. Using satellite and ground-based data, this study analyzed the seasonal trends, daily fluctuations, and the influence of COVID-19 lockdown measures on air quality. Our findings reveal a persistent increase in PM2.5 levels, particularly during winter, with concentrations frequently exceeding WHO guidelines. Our analysis suggests significant correlations between meteorological conditions and PM2.5 concentration, highlighting the significant role of meteorological conditions, such as rainfall, humidity, and temperature, in modulating PM2.5 levels. Our analysis found that PM2.5 levels exhibited a significant inverse correlation with relative humidity (r = −0.72), rainfall (r = −0.69), and temperatures (r = −0.79), highlighting the role of meteorological conditions in mitigating pollution levels. Additionally, the study underscores the temporary improvements in air quality during lockdown periods, demonstrating the potential benefits of sustained emission control measures. The research emphasizes the need for comprehensive and multi-faceted air quality management strategies, including stringent vehicular and industrial emissions regulations, enhancement of urban green spaces, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the adverse health impacts of PM2.5 pollution in Dhaka.

Spatiotemporal analysis and forecasting of air quality in the greater Dhaka region and assessment of a novel particulate matter filtration unit

Abstract:Bangladesh is one of the most polluted nations in the world, with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 161 in 2021; its capital, Dhaka, has the worst air quality of any major city in the world. The present study aims to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution of air quality indicators in the greater Dhaka region, forecast weekly AQI, and assess the performance of a novel particulate matter filtration unit in removing particulate matter. Air quality indicators remained highest during the dry season with an average of 128.5 μm/m3, while the lowest concentration was found in the monsoon season with an average of 19.096 μm/m3. Analysis revealed a statistically significant annual increasing trend of CO, which was associated with the growing number of brick kilns and usage of high-sulfur diesel. Except for the pre-monsoon AQI, concentrations of both seasonal and yearly AQI and PM2.5 showed decreasing trend, though predominantly insignificant, demonstrating the improvement in air quality. Prevailing winds influenced the seasonal distribution of tropospheric CO & NO2. The study also employed a seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model to forecast weekly AQI values. ARIMA (3,0,4) (3,1,3) at the 7-periodicity level performed best forecasting the AQI values among all developed models with low root mean square error (RMSE)-29.42 and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE)-13.11 values. The predicted AQI values suggested that the air quality would remain unhealthy for most weeks. The experimental simulation of the particulate matter filtration unit, designed in the shape of a road divider, generated substantial cyclonic motion while maintaining a very minimal pressure drop. In the real-world scenario, using only cyclonic separation and dry deposition, the suggested air filtration system removed 40%, 44%, and 42% of PM2.5, PM10, and TSP, respectively. Without employing filters, the device removed significant amounts of particulate matter, implying enormous potential to be used in the study area. The study could be useful for policy makers to improve urban air quality and public health in Bangladesh and in other developing countries.

Abstract:In recent decades, air pollution has become an important environmental problem in the megacities of eastern China. How to control air pollution in megacities is still a challenging issue because of the complex pollutant sources, atmospheric chemistry, and meteorology. There is substantial uncertainty in accurately identifying the contributions of transport and local emissions to the air quality in megacities. The COVID-19 outbreak has prompted a nationwide public lockdown period and provides a valuable opportunity for understanding the sources and factors of air pollutants. The three-month period of continuous field observations for aerosol particles and gaseous pollutants, which extended from January 2020 to March 2020, covered urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas in the typical megacity of Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta in eastern China. In general, the concentrations of PM2.5–10, PM2.5, NOx, SO2, and CO reduced 58%, 47%, 83%, 11% and 30%, respectively, in the megacity during the COVID-Lock period. The reduction proportions of PM2.5 and CO were generally higher in urban and urban-industry areas than those in suburban areas. NOx exhibited the greatest reduction (>80%) among all the air pollutants, and the reduction was similar in the urban, urban-industry, and suburban areas. O3 increased 102%–125% during the COVID-Lock period. The daytime elevation of the planetary boundary layer height can reduce 30% of the PM10, PM2.5, NOx and CO concentrations on the ground in Hangzhou. During the long-range transport events, air pollutants on the regional scale likely contribute 40%–90% of the fine particles in the Hangzhou urban area. The findings highlight the future control and model forecasting of air pollutants in Hangzhou and similar megacities in eastern China.

Abstract:This study investigated the changes in air pollutant's concentration, spatio-temporal distribution and sensitivity of changes in air pollutant's concentration during pre and post COVID-19 outbreak. We employed Google Earth Engine Platform to access remote sensing datasets of air pollutants across Asian continent. Air pollution and cumulative confirmed-COVID cases data of Asian countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia) have been collected and analyzed for 2019 and 2020. The results indicate that aerosol index (AI) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is significantly reduced during COVID outbreak i.e. in year 2020. In addition, we found significantly positive (P < 0.05, 95% confidence interval, two-tailed) correlation between changes in AI and NO2 concentration for net active-COVID case increment in almost each country. For other atmospheric gases i.e. carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), ozone (O3), and Sulfur dioxide (SO2), insignificant and/or significant negative correlation is also observed. These results suggest that the atmospheric concentration of AI and NO2 are good indicators of human activities. Furthermore, the changes in O3 shows significantly negative correlation for net active-COVID case increment. In conclusion, we observed significant positive environmental impact of COVID-19 restrictions in Asia. This study would help and assist environmentalist and policy makers in restraining air pollution by implementing efficient restrictions on human activities with minimal economic loss.

Abstract:Concerns the control of the deformation of a robot manipulator exerting large forces and moments on its environment. This was motivated by a real application consisting in inserting rivets with a two-arm robot (to assemble a wing or a fuselage on an airplane structure). The solution consists in performing the complete task rivet after rivet. To do so, it is necessary that the two parts be compressed together to avoid any introduction of turnings between them during drilling. Therefore, the forces that the arms have to exert exceed 1000 N. With such constraints, a position controlled robot deforms and the end-effecters are not orthogonal to the parts anymore, which is not acceptable. These deformations cannot be detected by the optical encoders mounted on the motors shafts, because they are due mainly to the flexibility of the joints. We have developed a force control scheme with explicit force feedback to compensate for these deformations by servoing the forces and moments at the level of the end-effector: the desired values are zero except for the force orthogonal to the parts being assembled. To avoid using force sensors in a production line, we propose to use a force control scheme to derive a reference model. This model furnishes at every point the position increments to be applied to the robot in order to compensate for its nondesired deformations.<<ETX>>

Abstract:Dhaka is subjected to high pollution levels throughout the year, holding some relatively high amounts of pollution readings, making its air unhealthy to breathe. The study examined hourly, shifting, seasonal fluctuations in particulate matter (PM2.5), the effects of seasonal meteorological variables, and the lockdown effect over the megacity of Dhaka from 2019 to 2021 using data from AirNow. The results indicate the daily average PM2.5 concentration between 2019 and 2021 was 112.49 µg/m3, about four times higher than the WHO limit and two times higher than the Bangladesh standard. Daily PM2.5 concentrations was high during morning and evening pick-up hours, reaching a maximum hourly concentration of 472.9 µg/m3 in February 2020. The maximum average PM2.5 concentration was 211.23 µg/m3 in March 2021 (winter season), and the lowest average was 27.58 µg/m3 in August 2020 (rainy season). The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between the PM2.5 and meteorological variables were inverse with rainfall (− 0.62), temperature (− 0.73), humidity (− 0.82), but positive with wind (0.09). Daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) concentrations improved from 108.53 to 67.99 µg/m3 during the lockdown period. Finally, the study recommended many mitigation strategies that might assist accountable authorities in lowering the number of life-threatening components in the air.

Abstract:Due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the home quarantine policy was implemented to control the spread of the pandemic, which may have a positive impact on the improvement of air quality in China. In this study, Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform was used to obtain CO, NO2, SO2 and aerosol optical depth (AOD) data from December 2018-March 2019, December 2019-March 2020, and December 2020-March 2021 in Shandong Province. These data were used to study the spatial and temporal distribution of air quality changes in Shandong Province before and after the pandemic and to analyze the reasons for the changes. The results show that: (1) Compared with the same period, CO and NO2 showed a decreasing trend from December 2019 to March 2020, with an average total change of 4082.36 mol/m2 and 167.25 mol/m2, and an average total change rate of 4.80% and 38.11%, respectively. SO2 did not have a significant decrease. This is inextricably linked to the reduction of human travel production activities with the implementation of the home quarantine policy. (2) The spatial and temporal variation of AOD was similar to that of pollutants, but showed a significant increase in January 2020, with an average total amount increase of 1.69 × 107 up about 2.54% from December 2019 to March 2020. This is attributed to urban heating and the reduction of pollutants such as NOx. (3) Pollutants and AOD were significantly correlated with meteorological data (e.g., average temperature, average humidity, average wind speed, average precipitation, etc.). This study provides data support for atmospheric protection and air quality monitoring in Shandong Province, as well as theoretical basis and technical guidance for policy formulation and urban planning.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has given a chance for researchers and policymakers all over the world to study the impact of lockdowns on air quality in each country. This review aims to investigate the impact of the restriction of activities during the lockdowns in the Asian Monsoon region on the main criteria air pollutants. The various types of lockdowns implemented in each country were based on the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. The concentrations of major air pollutants, especially particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), reduced significantly in all countries, especially in South Asia (India and Bangladesh), during periods of full lockdown. There were also indications of a significant reduction of sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and carbon monoxide (CO). At the same time, there were indications of increasing trends in surface ozone (O 3 ), presumably due to nonlinear chemistry associated with the reduction of oxides of nitrogens (NO X ). The reduction in the concentration of air pollutants can also be seen in satellite images. The results of aerosol optical depth (AOD) values followed the PM concentrations in many cities. A significant reduction of NO 2 was recorded by satellite images in almost all cities in the Asian Monsoon region. The major reductions in air pollutants were associated with reductions in mobility. Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, and Taiwan had comparatively positive gross domestic product growth indices in comparison to other Asian Monsoon nations during the COVID-19 pandemic. A positive outcome suggests that the economy of these nations, particularly in terms of industrial activity, persisted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the lockdowns implemented during COVID-19 suggest that air quality in the Asian Monsoon region can be improved by the reduction of emissions, especially those due to mobility as an indicator of traffic in major cities.

Abstract:Global lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have led to changes in the anthropogenic activities resulting in perceivable air quality improvements. Although several recent studies have analyzed these changes over different regions of the globe, these analyses have been constrained due to the usage of station-based data which is mostly limited upto the metropolitan cities. Also, the quantifiable changes have been reported only for the developed and developing regions leaving the poor economies (e.g. Africa) due to the shortage of in-situ data. Using a comprehensive set of high spatiotemporal resolution satellites and merged products of air pollutants, we analyze the air quality across the globe and quantify the improvement resulting from the suppressed anthropogenic activity during the lockdowns. In particular, we focus on megacities, capitals and cities with high standards of living to make the quantitative assessment. Our results offer valuable insights into the spatial distribution of changes in the air pollutants due to COVID-19 enforced lockdowns. Statistically significant reductions are observed over megacities with mean reduction by 19.74%, 7.38% and 49.9% in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), aerosol optical depth (AOD) and PM 2.5 concentrations. Google Earth Engine empowered cloud computing based remote sensing is used and the results provide a testbed for climate sensitivity experiments and validation of chemistry-climate models. Additionally, Google Earth Engine based apps have been developed to visualize the changes in a real-time fashion.

Abstract:Understanding of the relationship between air pollutants and meteorological parameters on the regional scale is a prerequisite for setting up air pollution prevention and control strategies; however, there is a lack of methodical investigations, particularly in the context of Bangladesh's deficiency of information on air pollution. This study represents the first attempt to investigate the relationship between air pollutants (NO2, O3, SO2, and CO) and meteorological parameters over Bangladesh using satellite data (OMI and MOPITT) during the period from 2015 to 2020. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) modelling was utilized to assess the relationship between air pollutants and weather variables. The spatial representation and average values of geographically varying coefficients showed that the column densities of air pollutants were affected by the meteorological parameters. For example, NO2 was positively associated with temperature in most of the studied regions, with an average geographically varying coefficient value of 0.12 Dobson units (DU, 1 DU = 2.687 × 1016 molecules/cm2), indicating that NO2 concentrations increase by 0.12 DU/year with every unit increase in temperature. The sources of NO2 and SO2 in Dhaka were identified through emission inventory analysis, and transportation and industry emissions were the most significant influencing factors for NO2 and SO2, respectively. Temperature and pressure showed a higher degree of relationship with all four air pollutants compared with other parameters. The results and discussion presented in this study can be of benefit for policy makers in developing air pollution control strategies in Bangladesh.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a rare reduction in human activities. In such a background, data from ground-based environmental stations, satellites, and reanalysis materials are utilized to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the global air quality changes during the COVID-19 outbreak. The results showed that under the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak, a significant decrease in particulate matter (PM x ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) occurred in more than 40% of the world’s land area, with NO2 (PM x ) decreasing by ∼30% (∼20%). The mobility, meteorological factors, and the response speed to COVID-19 outbreaks were examined. It was further found that in quick-response cities, lockdowns produced a sharp decline in mobility and had a dominant impact on air quality. In contrast, in slow-response cities, mobility dropped gradually since the confirmation of the first COVID-19 case (FCC) and he impact of the FCC, lockdowns, and meteorological factors were comparable.

Abstract:In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries implemented public health ordinances that resulted in restricted mobility and a resultant change in air quality. This has provided an opportunity to quantify the extent to which carbon-based transport and industrial activity affect air quality. However, quantification of these complex effects has proven to be difficult, depending on the stringency of restrictions, country-specific emission source profiles, long-term trends and meteorological effects on atmospheric chemistry, emission levels and in-flow from nearby countries. In this study, confounding factors were disentangled for a direct comparison of pandemic-related reductions in absolute pollutions levels, globally. The non-linear relationships between atmospheric processes and daily ground-level NO2, PM10, PM2.5 and O3 measurements were captured in city- and pollutant-specific XGBoost models for over 700 cities, adjusting for weather, seasonality and trends. City-level modelling allowed adaptation to the distinct topography, urban morphology, climate and atmospheric conditions for each city, individually, as the weather variables that were most predictive varied across cities. Pollution forecasts for 2020 in absence of a pandemic were generated based on weather and formed an ensemble for country-level pollution reductions. Findings were robust to modelling assumptions and consistent with various published case studies. NO2 reduced most in China, Europe and India, following severe government restrictions as part of the initial lockdowns. Reductions were highly correlated with changes in mobility levels, especially trips to transit stations, workplaces, retail and recreation venues. Further, NO2 did not fully revert to pre-pandemic levels in 2020. Ambient PM2.5 pollution, which has severe adverse health consequences, reduced most in China and India. Since positive health effects could be offset to some extent by prolonged exposure to indoor pollution, alternative transport initiatives could prove to be an important pathway towards better health outcomes in these countries. Increased O3 levels during initial lockdowns have been documented widely. However, our analyses also found a subsequent reduction in O3 for many countries below what was expected based on meteorological conditions during summer months (e.g., China, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Poland, Turkey). The effects in periods with high O3 levels are especially important for the development of effective mitigation strategies to improve health outcomes.

Abstract:Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is spreading all over the world in a short time. It originated from Wuhan City of China in the late 2019. Proper vaccines have still been in progress; the spread of the virus is contracted by lockdown and social distancing protocols. These lockdowns resulted in significant benefits, improving the quality of air and reducing the level of environmental pollution. In this context, the study proposes to identify the air quality in the region and its relation with COVID-19-affected people in metropolitan cities of India during COVID-19 lockdowns using a geographical information system (GIS), where over 90% of commercial and industrial sites and 100% school and colleges were closed. The study outcomes highlight the areas encountering high levels of pollution under the pre-lockdown scenario and have seen a higher number of cases. The relation is most evident for PM2.5, which is responsible for respiratory disorders and is the place of attack of SARS-CoV-2. This approach provides comparable outcomes with other decision-making tools. Our primary precedence should be to develop communities to enable people to remain healthy and stay. Healthy societies are crucial not only for people's health, but also for sustainable development. Centered on GIS is concealed; moreover, it is very flexible to use by policymakers.

Abstract:This study characterized India's Kolkata and Howrah Municipal Corporations' air quality during three prominent waves of the coronavirus pandemic (25 March–14 April 2020; 15 May–30 May 2021; and 1 January–15 January 2022). The primary aim was to examine the role of these COVID-19 pandemic-induced lockdowns and their stringency and meteorological factors in governing the pollutant concentrations, namely, CO, NH 3 , NO 2 , O 3 , PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 , and monitored by ten automated air pollution monitoring stations (AAMS) of the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). A total of 20 days of pollutant data from ten AAMS across four years were analyzed in this study. CO was above the CPCB standard, while PM 2.5 and PM 10 varied during all three waves. PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , SO 2, and O 3 levels were − 44%, − 34%, − 15%, − 48%, and − 51% less during the second wave than the first wave. The third wave witnessed a rise in air pollution levels compared to the second wave, as the stringency of lockdown was relaxed. Air pollution was the highest during the third wave among the three waves. The daily average (24 h) concentrations of PM 10 , CO, and NO 2 showed a significantly strong positive correlation with PM 2.5 . The results indicated that the meteorological conditions played a central role in governing air pollutant concentration. The spatial distribution map portrayed that the pockets of industrial/transport sectors compromised the overall air quality. Policymakers, planners, and decision-makers must note that the results showed that the city's air pollution level can be alleviated by implementing occasional short-term lockdowns.

Abstract:Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is among the most polluted cities in the world. This research evaluates seasonal patterns, day-of-week patterns, spatial gradients, and trends in PM2.5 (<2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter), PM10 (<10 µm in aerodynamic diameter), and gaseous pollutants concentrations (SO2, NO2, CO, and O3) monitored in Dhaka from 2013 to 2017. It expands on past work by considering multiple monitoring sites and air pollutants. Except for ozone, the average concentrations of these pollutants showed strong seasonal variation, with maximum during winter and minimum during monsoon, with the pollution concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 being roughly five- to sixfold higher during winter versus monsoon. Our comparisons of the pollutant concentrations with Bangladesh NAAQS and U.S. NAAQS limits analysis indicate particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) as the air pollutants of greatest concern, as they frequently exceeded the Bangladesh NAAQS and U.S. NAAQS, especially during nonmonsoon time. In contrast, gaseous pollutants reported far fewer exceedances throughout the study period. During the study period, the highest number of exceedances of NAAQS limits in Dhaka City (Darus-Salam site) were found for PM2.5 (72% of total study days), followed by PM10 (40% of total study days), O3 (1.7% of total study days), SO2 (0.38% of total study days), and CO (0.25% of total study days). The trend analyses results showed statistically significant positive slopes over time for SO2 (5.6 ppb yr-1, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.7, 10.5) and CO (0.32 ppm yr-1, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.56), which suggest increase in brick kilns operation and high-sulfur diesel use. Though statistically nonsignificant annual decreasing slopes for PM2.5 (-4.6 µg/m3 yr-1, 95% CI: -12.7, 3.6) and PM10 (-2.7 µg/m3 yr-1, 95% CI: -7.9, 2.5) were observed during this study period, the PM2.5 concentration is still too high (~ 82.0 µg/m3) and can cause severe impact on human health. Implications: This study revealed key insights into air quality challenges across Dhaka, Bangladesh, indicating particulate matter (PM) as Dhaka's most serious air pollutant threat to human health. The results of these analyses indicate that there is a need for immediate further investigations, and action based on those investigations, including the conduct local epidemiological PM exposure-human health effects studies for this city, in order to determine the most public health effective interventions.

Abstract:This study conducts a spatio-temporal analysis of tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and total carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations in the Punjab and Haryana regions of India and Pakistan, using datasets from the Sentinel 5-Precursor (S5P) satellite. These regions, marked by diverse economic growth factors including population expansion, power generation, transportation, and agricultural practices, face similar challenges in atmospheric pollution, particularly evident in major urban centers like Delhi and Lahore, identified as pollution hotspots. The study also spotlights pollution associated with power plants. In urban areas, tropospheric NO 2 levels are predominantly elevated due to vehicular emissions, whereas residential activities mainly contribute to CO pollution. However, precisely attributing urban CO sources is complex due to its longer atmospheric residence time and intricate circulation patterns. Notably, the burning of rice crop residue in November significantly exacerbates winter pollution episodes and smog, showing a more pronounced correlation with total CO than with tropospheric NO 2 levels. The temporal analysis indicates that the months from October to December witness peak pollution, contrasted with the relatively cleaner period during the monsoon months of July to September. The severe pollution in the OND quarter is attributed to factors such as variations in boundary layer height and depletion of OH radicals. Furthermore, the study highlights the positive impact of the COVID-19 lockdown on air quality, with a significant decrease in NO 2 concentrations during April, 2020 (Delhi: 59%, Lahore: 58%). However, the reduction in total CO columns was less significant. The study also correlates lockdown stringency with tropospheric NO 2 columns (R2: 0.37 for Delhi, 0.25 for Lahore, 0.22 for Rawalpindi/Islamabad), acknowledging the influence of various meteorological and atmospheric variables. The research highlights the significant impact of crop residue burning on winter pollution levels, particularly on total CO concentrations. The study also shows the notable effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on air quality, significantly reducing NO 2 levels. Additionally, it explores the correlation between lockdown stringency and tropospheric NO 2 columns, considering various meteorological factors.

Abstract:Climatic condition is triggering human health emergencies and earth's surface changes. Anthropogenic activities, such as built-up expansion, transportation development, industrial works, and some extreme phases, are the main reason for climate change and global warming. Air pollutants are increased gradually due to anthropogenic activities and triggering the earth's health. Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) are truthfully important for air quality measurement because those air pollutants are more harmful to the environment and human's health. Earth observational Sentinel-5P is applied for monitoring the air pollutant and chemical conditions in the atmosphere from 2018 to 2021. The cloud computing-based Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform is applied for monitoring those air pollutants and chemical components in the atmosphere. The NO2 variation indicates high during the time because of the anthropogenic activities. Carbon Monoxide (CO) is also located high between two 1-month different maps. The 2020 and 2021 results indicate AQI change is high where 2018 and 2019 indicates low AQI throughout the year. The Kolkata have seven AQI monitoring station where high nitrogen dioxide recorded 102 (2018), 48 (2019), 26 (2020) and 98 (2021), where Delhi AQI stations recorded 99 (2018), 49 (2019), 37 (2020), and 107 (2021). Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and Chennai recorded huge fluctuations of air pollutants during the study periods, where ~ 50-60% NO2 was recorded as high in the recent time. The AOD was noticed high in Uttar Pradesh in 2020. These results indicate that air pollutant investigation is much necessary for future planning and management otherwise; our planet earth is mostly affected by the anthropogenic and climatic conditions where maybe life does not exist.
Assessing the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on fine-scale air quality across a heavy-pollution city using low-cost sensors

Abstract:COVID-19 pandemic led to restricted anthropogenic activities and drastic emission reduction, while air quality in response to strict control measures at a fine spatial scale still remained unknown. At first, we estimated the high-resolution air quality based on low-cost sensors, assimilated meteorology, and other geographical covariates. The result suggested that PM 2.5 , NO 2 , and SO 2 across Handan decreased by 21%, 55%, and 12%, respectively. In contrast, the 8-h O 3 level over Handan increased by 87%. Then, the random forest (RF) model was applied to remove the meteorology in order to capture the response of air quality to emission reduction at the fine spatial scale. The deweathered concentrations of some species varied greatly at different roads and points of interest (POI). The deweathered NO 2 level suffered from more drastic reduction in some industrial points and roads compared with other POI, which was closely associated with the dense nitrogen oxide (NO x ) emissions in these sites/roads. However, the deweathered O 3 concentrations in some main lines (e.g., highway and sidewalk) showed more significant increases, which might be due to more rapid decline of NO x emission compared with volatile organic compounds (VOC) emission in a VOC-limited region.

Abstract:To overcome the spread of the severe COVID-19 outbreak, various lockdown measures have been taken worldwide. China imposed the strictest home-quarantine measures during the COVID-19 outbreak in the year 2020. This provides a valuable opportunity to study the impact of anthropogenic emission reductions on air quality. Based on the GEE platform and satellite imagery, this study analyzed the changes in the concentrations of NO2, O3, CO, and SO2 in the same season (1 February–1 May) before and after the epidemic control (2019–2021) for 16 typical representative cities of China. The results showed that NO2 concentrations significantly decreased by around 20–24% for different types of metropolises, whereas O3 increased for most of the studied metropolises, including approximately 7% in megacities and other major cities. Additionally, the concentrations of CO and SO2 showed no statistically significant changes during the study intervals. The study also indicated strong variations in air pollutants among different geographic regions. In addition to the methods in this study, it is essential to include the differences in meteorological impact factors in the study to identify future references for air pollution reduction measures.
