Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.

Abstract:By allowing almost arbitrary distributions of amplitude and phase of electromagnetic waves to be generated by a layer of sub-wavelength-size unit cells, metasurfaces have given rise to the field of meta-holography. However, holography with circularly polarized waves remains complicated as the achiral building blocks of existing meta-holograms inevitably contribute to holographic images generated by both left-handed and right-handed waves. Here we demonstrate how planar chirality enables the fully independent realization of high-efficiency meta-holograms for one circular polarization or the other. Such circular-polarization-selective meta-holograms are based on chiral building blocks that reflect either left-handed or right-handed circularly polarized waves with an orientation-dependent phase. Using terahertz waves, we experimentally demonstrate that this allows the straightforward design of reflective phase meta-holograms, where the use of alternating structures of opposite handedness yields independent holographic images for circularly polarized waves of opposite handedness with negligible polarization cross-talk.

Abstract:Abstract Spin light manipulation based on chiral metasurfaces is a striking hotspot that has intrigued huge attention. Circular dichroism, a unique phenomenon of chiral atoms/molecules, has been regarded as another auxiliary dimension for guiding electromagnetic waves, which has been explored in the field of artificial material sciences yet a challenging issue. Here, a generic strategy based on dynamic chiral meta-atom for revealing strong circular dichroism as well as applicable electromagnetic functionality is proposed in microwave regime. We demonstrate a dynamic metasurface that enables the fully independent holograms reconstruction for one circular polarization or the other at the active operating state. On the other hand, the electromagnetic scattering is realized for lowering observable backward reflection at the passive state. Numerical simulation and experimental verification are conducted to manifest the feasibility. It is expected that the proposed strategy can be applied to broaden the horizon for dynamic chiral meta-devices and may find applications in information encryption, anti-counterfeiting, and other dynamic systems.

Abstract:A chiral coding metasurface design strategy working for both linear and nonlinear regimes is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. The information channels increase to sixfold with simultaneous multi‐foci focusing and multi‐vortex generation operating in different polarization states. This work paves the way for integrated informational metasurface that enables high‐order information channels and may find applications in chiral detection and information encryption. Optical chirality, which describes the property of asymmetric light–matter interactions for different handedness of polarization, plays an important role in physical photonics, biochemical processes, and molecular recognition. Recently, asymmetric optical responses of chiral nanostructures provide a wide platform for arbitrary and artificial manipulation of optical chirality. Here, a design strategy is theoretically and experimentally introduced to realize a spin‐selective coding metasurface in both linear and third harmonic regimes with giant chirality. Significant chiral transmission and wavefront control are realized by a chiral coding metasurface composed of amorphous silicon (a‐Si) resonators with C2 symmetry. The resonators and the enantiomers are encoded with different transmission amplitude and phase. The information channels are expanded to six‐fold with simultaneous multi‐foci focusing and multi‐vortex generation operating in different polarization and linear/nonlinear channels. The nonlinear chiral high‐contrast imaging is also achieved for spin‐selective pattern information transmission. The study significantly expands the information capacity of coding metasurfaces, and can be readily applied in optical systems for information transmission in both linear and nonlinear regimes.

Abstract:Nonlinear chiral photonics explores nonlinear response of chiral structures, and it offers a pathway to novel optical functionalities not accessible through linear or achiral systems. Here we present the first application of nanostructured van der Waals materials to nonlinear chiral photonics. We demonstrate the three orders of magnitude enhancement of the third-harmonic generation from hBN metasurfaces driven by quasi-bound states in the continuum and accompanied by strong nonlinear circular dichroism at the resonances. This novel platform for chiral metaphotonics can be employed for achieving large circular dichroism combined with high-efficiency harmonic generation in a broad frequency range.

Abstract:The interaction between chiral molecules and circularly polarized light is largely influenced by the local optical chirality density. This interaction prompts substantial demand of the design of nanophotonic platforms capable of enhancing such effects across large and accessible volumes. Such a magnification requires nanostructures that provide strong electric and magnetic field enhancements while preserving the phase relation of circular light. Dielectric nanostructures, particularly those able to support resonances, are ideal candidates for this task due to their capacity for high electric and magnetic field enhancements. On the other hand, efficient third harmonic generation requires strong electric field resonances within dielectric materials, a feature often boosted by incorporating plasmonic materials into hybrid systems. In this work, we numerically propose a coupled silicon disk-gold ring system that can exploit the anapole-induced field confinement to provide a broadband magnified circular dichroism under realistic conditions, reaching values up to a 230-fold enhancement. We also demonstrate that this structure can be employed as an efficient third harmonic generator, which, when integrated with chiral media, enables an 800-fold enhancement in circular dichroism. Furthermore, we show that pulsed illumination at intensities up to 10 GW/cm2 does not induce temperature increments that could potentially damage the samples. These findings suggest that this system can be a promising and versatile approach toward ultrasensitive chiral sensing.

Abstract:Chiral metamaterials with artificially engineered subwavelength structures can effectively couple incident waves and lead diverse electromagnetic responses to various circular polarizations. Here, we designed and fabricated an origami-inspired reconfigurable three-dimensional (3D) chiral metamaterial, whose circular dichroism can be dynamically controlled by simple mechanical stretch of its bonded elastomer substrate. The chiral metamaterial was obtained from a patterned planar achiral metasurface through mechanically guided 3D assembly based on the prestrain approach, which ensures deterministic and uniform deformations for each building block during stretching. Numerical simulations and experimental observations were carried out to illustrate the deformation mechanism and the electromagnetic response of the metamaterials under the applied strain. It is shown that the transmissions and chiroptical activities can be continuously tuned from complete spin selectivity to partial spin selectivity when the applied strain increases. The maximum circular dichroism was experimentally measured as high as 0.98, which can be even adjusted to near zero by mechanical stretching. Our work demonstrated an easily operated and promising way to control the chirality of origami-inspired metamaterial in the microwave region, which can be further extended to the terahertz frequency biosensing, imaging, and spectroscope.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, as a two-dimensional (2D) version of metamaterials, have drawn considerable attention for their revolutionary capability in manipulating the amplitude, phase, and polarization of light. As one of the most important types of metasurfaces, geometric metasurfaces provide a versatile platform for controlling optical phase distributions due to the geometric nature of the generated phase profile. However, it remains a great challenge to design geometric metasurfaces for realizing spin-switchable functionalities because the generated phase profile with the converted spin is reversed once the handedness of the incident beam is switched. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate chiral geometric metasurfaces based on intrinsically chiral plasmonic stepped nanoapertures with a simultaneously high circular dichroism in transmission (CDT) and large cross-polarization ratio (CPR) in transmitted light to exhibit spin-controlled wavefront shaping capabilities. The chiral geometric metasurfaces are constructed by merging two independently designed subarrays of the two enantiomers for the stepped nanoaperture. Under a certain incident handedness, the transmission from one subarray is allowed, while the transmission from the other subarray is strongly prohibited. The merged metasurface then only exhibits the transmitted signal with the phase profile of one subarray, which can be switched by changing the incident handedness. Based on the chiral geometric metasurface, both chiral metasurface holograms and the spin-dependent generation of hybrid-order Poincaré sphere beams are experimentally realized. Our approach promises further applications in spin-controlled metasurface devices for complex beam conversion, image processing, optical trapping, and optical communications.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces with giant chiral optical responses are good candidates for chirality study and application, which are usually composed of few-layer or three-dimensional nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate that hybrid bilayer plasmonic metasurfaces simply fabricated via a facile one-step nanofabrication process are good candidates for the realization of intrinsic chiral optical responses and spin-selective transmission. We prove that the intrinsic chiral optical response of the proposed metasurface, which can be easily manipulated, is attributed to the spin-selective collective interference of locally enhanced electric fields caused by the strong interlayer coupling. We further experimentally prove the advantages of fabricated hybrid bilayer plasmonic metasurfaces for optical encryption. With the advantages of compact design, chiral optical response easy to control and lower fabrication demand, the proposed metasurfaces can further expand the applications of chiral plasmonic nanostructures in the area of spin nanophotonics, nonlinear optics, and optical sensing.

Abstract:Leveraging the Kerr nonlinearities of silicon, a nonlinear chiral planar metasurface supporting high quality factor guided mode resonances at near‐infrared wavelengths is numerically demonstrated. Pronounced co‐polarization transmission circular dichroism, which is symmetry‐forbidden in the linear regime, is observed due to the nonlinear Kerr effect based on the handedness‐selective field concentration phenomenon. Moreover, the polarization switching effect is observed. Chiral nanostructures have immense potential for complete polarization control of light. Given the intrinsic 3D structure of circularly polarized light, nanoarchitectures with structural chirality in 3D space are usually required to achieve "full" chiroptical response. On the other hand, due to the lack of available active materials at optical wavelengths, examples of chiral photonic devices that can be tuned in an active manner remain rare. Here, based on the large Kerr nonlinearities of silicon, the nonlinear chiroptical response from a planar Si metasurface supporting high quality (Q)‐factor guided mode resonances (GMRs) at near‐infrared wavelengths, are numerically demonstrated. In the linear regime, the optical anisotropy of the C2‐symmetric structure associated with the observed GMRs leads to a pair of chiral resonance modes, enabling pronounced cross‐polarization transmission circular dichroism and a strong handedness‐dependent field enhancement effect. Owing to the nonlinear Kerr effect, such Si metasurfaces are seen to exhibit prominent chiral‐selective optical nonlinearity. Importantly, a pronounced co‐polarization transmission circular dichroism is observed, suggesting that the circularly polarized waves in the nonlinear regime possess asymmetric Jones matrices. Dielectric chiral metasurfaces with Kerr nonlinearities can be utilized to facilitate polarization‐state modulators with simple planar structures.

Abstract:The chiral optical response represents interactions of circularly polarized light with matter. Chiral metamaterials are widely applied in polarization imaging, optical sensing, and other fields due to their strong ability to manipulate light and form giant circular polarization differential transmittance (CPDT). Here, we propose all-silicon chiral metasurfaces for highly efficient CPDT in the terahertz band. In addition to characterizing the static chiral properties of our proposed metasurface, dynamic chiral behaviors are also characterized by optical pumping (1064 nm continuous wave), and a giant amplitude modulation depth is obtained. The measured results agree well with the simulations. In addition, the application of our chiral metasurface in polarization multiplexed near-field image display is also exhibited. Such chiral metasurface could find many potential applications in photon-spin selective devices, such as circularly polarized light detectors and chiral sensors.

Abstract:Dynamic control of circular dichroism in photonic structures is critically important for compact spectrometers, stereoscopic displays, and information processing exploiting multiple degrees of freedom. Metasurfaces can help miniaturize chiral devices but only produce static and limited chiral responses. While external stimuli can tune resonances, their modulations are often weak, and reversing continuously the sign of circular dichroism is extremely challenging. Here, we demonstrate the dynamically tunable chiral response of resonant metasurfaces supporting chiral bound states in the continuum combining them with phase-change materials. Phase transition between amorphous and crystalline phases allows for control of chiral response and varies chirality rapidly from −0.947 to +0.958 backward and forward via the chirality continuum. Our demonstrations underpin the rapid development of chiral photonics and its applications.

Chiral Nonlinear Polaritonics with van der Waals Metasurfaces

Abstract:In the strong-coupling regime, the interaction between light and matter reaches a hybridization state where the photonic and material components become inseparably linked. Using tailored states of light to break symmetries in such systems can underpin the development of novel non-equilibrium quantum materials. Chiral optical cavities offer a promising way for this, enabling either temporal or spatial symmetry-breaking, both of which are unachievable with conventional mirror cavities. For spatial symmetry-breaking a cavity needs to discriminate the handedness of circularly polarized light, a functionality that can only be achieved with metamaterials. Here, we suggest and demonstrate experimentally a chiral transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) metasurface with broken out-of-plane symmetry, allowing for a selective formation of self-hybridized exciton-polaritons with specific chirality. Our metasurface cavity maintains maximum chirality for oblique incidence up to 20°, significantly outperforming all previously known designs, thereby turning the angle of incidence from a constraint to a new degree of freedom for sub-nanometer precise control of resonance wavelengths. Moreover, we study the chiral strong-coupling regime in nonlinear experiments and show the polariton-driven nature of chiral third-harmonic generation. Our results demonstrate a clear pathway towards novel quantum material engineering with implications in a wide range of photonics research, such as superconductivity and valleytronics.

Abstract:The ability of metasurfaces to simultaneously manipulate both the spin and phase of circularly polarized (CP) incident waves has attracted considerable attention from researchers. Here, we propose a reconfigurable double circular split rings (DCSRs) chiral metasurface. By introducing graphene and changing the Fermi level of graphene, dynamic circular dichroism (CD) can be achieved. The calculation results show that when the Fermi level of graphene is increased from 0.1 eV to 1 eV, the CD decreases from 0.72 to 0.09 at 0.839 THz, which provides a CD-tunable spin-controlled method. In addition, based on the graphene-enabled DCSRs, we design two metasurface arrays combining Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase and coding metasurface theory to realize terahertz CP wave switchable focusing and spin-controlled multi-pencil beam generation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of reflective holography for multiplexing circularly polarized waves. The results of this paper are expected to play a significant role in the future terahertz wireless communication system, multi-spectral imaging, and information encryption fields.

Abstract:Nonlinear wavefront control is a crucial requirement in realizing nonlinear optical applications with metasurfaces. Numerous aspects of nonlinear frequency conversion and wavefront control have been demonstrated for plasmonic metasurfaces. However, several disadvantages limit their applicability in nonlinear nanophotonics, including high dissipative loss and low optical damage threshold. In contrast, it has been shown that metasurfaces made of high-index dielectrics can provide strong nonlinear responses. Regardless of the recent progress in nonlinear optical processes using all-dielectric nanostructures and metasurfaces, much less advancement has been made in realizing a full wavefront control directly with the generation process. Here, we demonstrate the nonlinear wavefront control for the third-harmonic generation with a silicon metasurface. We use a Pancharatnam-Berry phase approach to encode phase gradients and holographic images on nanostructured silicon metasurfaces. We experimentally demonstrate the polarization-dependent wavefront control and the reconstruction of an encoded hologram at the third-harmonic wavelength with high fidelity. Further, we show that holographic multiplexing is possible by utilizing the polarization states of the third harmonic generation. Our approach eases design and fabrication processes and paves the way to an easy to use toolbox for nonlinear optical wavefront control with all-dielectric metasurfaces.

Abstract:An all-optical tunabe chirality is realized in a photonic metamaterial, the metamolecule of which consists of a nonlinear nano-Au:polycrystalline indium-tin oxide layer sandwiched between two L-shaped gold nano-antennas twisted 90° with each other. The maximum circular dichroism reached 30%. Under excitation of a 40 kW/cm2 weak pump light, the peak in the circular dichroism shifts 45 nm in the short-wavelength direction. An ultrafast response time of 35 ps is maintained. This work not only opens up the possibility for the realization of ultralow-power and ultrafast all-optical tunable chirality but also offers a way to construct ultrahigh-speed on-chip biochemical sensors.
A Tunable Chiral Metasurface Useable in Terahertz Imaging and Wavefront Shaping

Abstract:We proposed a tunable chiral metasurface comprising a reflective bottom layer of gold, a dielectric layer of polyimide, and a structural top layer of gold-graphene. Theoretical investigations were conducted employing CST Studio Suite for its properties. The results show that, firstly, based on the chiral metasurface, dual-frequency circular dichroism at 0.9 THz and 1.06 THz are realized enabling complementary near-field imaging applications controlled by the graphene Fermi energy level (Ef). Subsequently, exploiting the exceptional selective characteristics of circularly polarized waves using a chiral metasurface, eight chiral phase-gradient metasurfaces were constructed by rotating the chiral structure. Moreover, based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase principle, tunable wavefront shaping applications were further realized, including anomalous reflection, vortex beams, and focusing. In anomalous reflection, the reflection angles for left-circularly polarized (LCP) and right-circularly polarized (RCP) incidences are opposite when adjusting the Ef of graphene. In the application of vortex beams, by adjusting the Ef of graphene, we can achieve vortex beams with opposite topological charges under different circularly polarized incidences. In the focusing application, the incident LCP and RCP can achieve focusing and defocusing, respectively, and the graphene Ef can dynamically control the focusing efficiency at the incident LCP, increasing it from 13.63% to 44.84%.
