Abstract:In a European project about formative assessment, Local Working Groups (LWGs) from six participating countries made use of a format for teacher-researcher collaboration. The activities in each LWG involved discussions and reflections about implementation of four assessment formats. A key aim was close collaboration between teachers and researchers to develop teachers’ formative assessment practices, which were partially evidenced with changes in attributes of self-efficacy. The research question was: to what extent do working with formative assessment strategies in collaboration with researchers and other teachers differentially affect individual self-efficacy beliefs of practicing teachers across different educational contexts? A 12-item teacher questionnaire, with items selected from a commonly used international instrument for science teaching self-efficacy, was distributed to the participating teachers before and after their work in the LWGs. A novel method of analysis using networks where participants from different LWGs were linked based on the similarities of their answers, revealed differences between empirically identified groups and larger super groups of participants. These analyses showed, for example, that one group of teachers perceived themselves to have knowledge about using formative assessment but did not have the skills to use it effectively. It is suggested that future research and development projects may use this new methodology to pinpoint groups, which seem to respond differently to interventions and modify guidance or instruction accordingly.
Introduction of Formative Assessment Classroom Techniques (FACTs) to School Chemistry Teaching: Teachers’ Attitudes, Beliefs, and Experiences

Abstract:This paper presents teachers' perspectives and experiences with the implementation of formative assessment (FA) into chemistry lessons at the secondary school level through Formative Assessment Classroom Techniques (FACTs). The research had a qualitative character and was based on semistructured interviews focused on: the definition and previous use of FA, implementation experience, and teachers' beliefs, attitudes, and abilities. The research describes five cases-chemistry teachers participating in a professional development program. The 2 year-long training was focused on the theory of FA, practical exercises, and extended support during in-school FACTs implementation. The results showed that using FACTs during secondary school chemistry lessons emphasizes students' strengths and weaknesses, encourages them to perform truthful self-assessments, and engages them. Moreover, using FACTs opens new areas for parents' involvement in the assessment and learning process that can be especially valuable for students with special educational needs. The main challenges cited by teachers were time management, policy support, and the need for further assistance during FACTs implementation.

Abstract:New reform documents underscore the importance of integrating science practices into the learning of science. This integration requires sophisticated teaching that does not often happen. Educative curriculum materials – materials explicitly designed to support teacher and student learning – have been posited as a way to support teachers to achieve these ambitious goals, yet little is known about how elementary teachers actually use educative curriculum materials to support student engagement in science practices. To address this gap, this study investigated how five upper elementary teachers supported students to engage in science practices during an enactment of two curriculum units. Three of the teachers had units enhanced with educative features, informed by current research and reforms, while two of the teachers had units without these features. The teachers varied in how they supported students in the science practices of justifying predictions, constructing evidence-based claims, recording observations, and planning investigations. For example, some of the teachers with the educative features supported students in constructing evidence-based claims and justifying predictions in ways called for by the educative features. Implications for curriculum developers and teacher educators are discussed based on the patterns found in the teachers’ use of the educative curriculum materials.

Digital Learning Ecosystem to Enhance Formative Assessment in Second Language Acquisition in Higher Education

Abstract:Formative assessment (FA) provides lecturers and learners with information about the quality and development of different tasks. Formative feedback becomes an essential element that increases the quality of these tasks, guides learners in the process, and motivates them to be actively involved, acquiring the learning objectives and skills. A digital learning ecosystems (DLE) offers the possibility of a quality, effective, and sustainable education, enabling people to carry on with their training from anywhere, at any time, and through personal pathways. In this framework, we present a descriptive study with a qualitative approach to explore the views of 91 participants regarding the process of FA in second language acquisition (SLA) in a DLE. According to the results, the DLE provides the necessary tools to favour FA, and to obtain valuable data on the learners' academic achievements in SLA. The learners take an active role in learning English and competence development such as reading, writing, and listening, and other skills such as digital competence, communication, problem solving, empathy, or creativity. The data obtained help lecturers to identify learners' difficulties in SLA and address them with different didactic strategies. It can be concluded that FA plays a relevant role in SLA in a DLE.

Embracing Digital Technology in Science Classrooms—Secondary School Teachers’ Enacted Teaching and Reflections on Practice

Abstract:Abstract The aim of this case study was to investigate what happens in science classrooms when teaching is almost entirely based on the use of digital technology. Two secondary school science teachers participated, together with their seventh grade classes. Data were collected through eight observation sessions (altogether about 9.5 h) and 9 h of interviews with the teachers. For analysis, a modified version of the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge framework was used. The results showed the science teachers’ general approach in the classroom and revealed that they were self-confident in using digital technology, and utilised predetermined digital study material and, when it was felt necessary, supplemental materials. The teachers were positive about using digital technology since they thought it motivated their students and made assessment easier. The teachers claimed that digital technology had improved their teaching, providing more breadth because of access to varied digital tools; teaching had also become more individualised. Few differences were identified between different lessons, whether in physics, chemistry or biology, and unfortunately the identified relationship between the use of digital technology and content knowledge was limited. The teachers also reflected on the challenges they faced, especially in supporting low-achieving students and effectively using inquiry-based teaching through digital technology. Despite some acknowledged limitations, the study enhances our knowledge about how the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework can be used as an analytical tool in authentic teaching, with specific contexts and, above all, when education is largely based on the comprehensive use of digital technology rather than its occasional integration.

Abstract:Despite the rising interest in the practice of formative assessment (FA) in language classrooms, research has rarely examined the factors that contribute to differential use of FA. The present study adopts an explanatory sequential mixed-method design to examine differences in FA use among Japanese junior and senior high school EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teachers. Based on Wiliam’s (2010) model of FA strategies, quantitative analysis of a large-scale survey classified 727 participants into three levels (high, middle, and low) of FA use. In the qualitative follow-up phase, four selected survey respondents were interviewed and observed. The results indicated varying degrees of FA use among teachers, suggesting that the four FA variables (intentions, methods, purposes, and feedback) derived from Wiliam’s model succeeded in identifying differential degrees of FA use.

Abstract:Abstract This study explores how the use of learning analytics (LA) visualizations to eliciting examples tasks (EET) on the topic of functions can shape middle school mathematics teachers’ formative assessment (FA) practices. Teachers’ practices were examined when provided with LA visualizations, offering them an interactive analysis of their students’ work. The findings showed that LA visualizations enhanced teachers’ evaluations of their students’ work, including challenges and strengths. Two key areas of FA were supported when teachers interacted with LA: designing and implementing classroom discussions and other learning activities and enhancing the quality of feedback. The patterns of use indicated that when teachers were not convinced of the data presented, they used critical thinking and accessed other reports and interactive tools to confirm their impressions.

Abstract:Education holds a crucial role in human life, connecting the roles of teachers and students in teaching and evaluation. Assessment, a big part of education, helps teachers understand how well students are doing as they learn. When assessing students, teachers must consider how each student learns, what they're good at, what they find challenging, and what they need to succeed in school. So, teachers must know how to do assessments well. This study aims to determine the teacher's understanding of formative assessment and how to apply formative assessment to learning English in assessing students' English skills. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method using interviews and observations. 7 English teachers from different schools were interviewed (4 teachers at SMAN 3 Maros, 1 teacher at MA Darussalam Barandasi, and 2 English teachers at SMKN 1 Maros). Meanwhile, observations were carried out once at each school. The findings show that teachers use formative assessment at the beginning, middle, and end of learning sessions to understand students' performance. Teachers see many benefits in using formative assessments, like measuring individual abilities, reaching learning goals, and understanding student needs better. Some teachers face challenges, like figuring out how each student is different, which shows they might need more help and training. Classroom observations also show that some schools do well with formative assessments, while others have problems, such as SMK 1 Maros, which has issues with students not showing up and using home-based assignments. This study suggests giving teachers more support and training to improve assessments and learning for everyone.

Abstract:Background: The overarching interest in this project is to gain knowledge about what happens in the meeting between group work and assessment in pedagogical practice. There seems to be a tension between the demand for individual assessment of students' knowledge and abilities and the demand to teach students collaboration abilities through group work. A previous study concerning teachers' management of group work as a classroom activity reveals that assessment is a highly relevant factor. In addition, teachers seem to experience difficulties and acknowledge some challenges and problems as regards assessing students working in a group. Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to obtain not only increased knowledge of how teachers assess individual learning occurring in group work, but also explore how teachers manage the emerging challenges. An additional purpose was, with support from previous research within the area, to provide a means of handling these challenges. Sample: Data were gathered by means of three focus group interviews. The informants were 11 teachers. They taught students aged 11–16 years in compulsory education in Sweden during the spring of 2009. Design and method: Grounded theory methodology, together with the theoretical perspective of symbolic interactionism, was used to increase comprehension of the teachers' problems when assessing learning outcome in group work. The transcribed discussions in the focus groups were analysed by means of theoretical sampling, and a number of categories emerged. Results: The results show that teachers primarily used informal approaches when they assessed students' knowledge and abilities in group work situations. The teachers used a general level when talking about assessment and the descriptions about what they assess were vague. In the teachers' accounts of what is assessed it is possible to distinguish both the product and the process carried out at an individual as well as at a group level. Furthermore, the results reveal two different assessment strategies, that is how the assessment was carried out – by teachers (from outside the group) or by students (from inside the group). Additionally, the results disclosed that the teachers have difficulties in concretising and verbalising what and how they assess. The teachers also experienced uncertainty and contradictory demands concerning assessment of students in group work. They were concerned about this difficulty. Conclusion: The teachers were of the opinion that group work is used foremost to develop group work abilities and not as a means of acquiring academic knowledge. This influenced the teachers' mode of using assessment, that is, they focussed on assessing the collaborative abilities. This article elucidates some of the teachers' problems concerning assessment in group work and some pedagogical implications based on empirical findings. Research-based theories and models within these areas could increase teachers' confidence, which, in turn, could increase good practice, their ability to use group work as a mode and also their competence in assessment.

Teacher facilitating of group learning in science with digital technology and insights into students’ agency in learning to learn

Abstract:The study provides an insight into how teachers may facilitate students’ group learning in science with digital technology, which was examined when Norwegian lower secondary school students engaged in learning concepts of mitosis and meiosis. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the teacher’s assistance draw on Galperin’s conceptualisation of learning. Findings reveal patterns in the teacher’s guidance: the teacher fulfilled the orienting, executive and controlling functions while assisting students in identifying the key features of mitosis and meiosis and solving the compare and contrast task. The teacher relied on and interplayed with the available mediational resources: compare and contrast task, digital animations, and collaborating peers. However, it was the compare and contrast task that demonstrated an approach to study scientific concepts which may have contributed to the development of learners’ understanding about to engage in learning in science. By adopting such an approach, learning activity has the potential to not only help students to achieve learning outcomes but it acquires a functional significance, becoming a tool in the learning process aimed at the development of students’ as learners. The digital animations, in turn, demonstrated scientific processes that were otherwise invisible for students and triggered group discussions. The study, therefore, raises questions about the need for practitioners’ awareness of the type of support the technology and other resources provide to assist both conceptual learning and enhancing students’ agency in learning to learn.

Abstract:Motivation is a prerequisite for students’ learning, and formative assessment has been suggested as a possible way of supporting students’ motivation. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence corroborating the hypothesis of large effects from formative assessment interventions on students’ autonomous forms of motivation and motivation in terms of behavioral engagement in learning activities. In addition, formative assessment practices that do have an impact on students’ motivation may put additional requirements on teachers than more traditional teaching practices. Such requirements include decisions teachers need to make in classroom practice. The requirements on teachers’ decision-making in formative assessment practices that have a positive impact on students’ autonomous forms of motivation and behavioral engagement have not been investigated. This study describes one teacher’s formative assessment practice during a sociology course in upper secondary school, and it identifies the requirements for the teacher’s decision-making. The teacher had participated in a professional development program about formative assessment just prior to this study. This study also investigated changes in the students’ motivation when the teacher implemented the formative assessment practice. The teacher’s practice was examined through observations, weekly teacher logs, the teacher’s teaching descriptions, and an interview with the teacher. Data on changes in the students’ type of motivation and engagement were collected in the teacher’s class and in five comparison classes through a questionnaire administered in the beginning and the end of the course. The students responded to the questionnaire items by choosing the extent to which they agreed with the statements on a scale from 1–7. The teacher’s formative assessment practice focused on collecting information about the students’ knowledge and skills and then using this information to make decisions about subsequent instruction. Several types of decisions, and the knowledge and skills required to make them that exceed those required in more traditional teaching practices, were identified. The students’ in the intervention teacher’s class increased their controlled and autonomous forms of motivation as well as their engagement in learning activities more than the students in the comparison classes.

Abstract:In recent years, growing interest is shown in Technology-aided formative assessment (TAFA) and language learning. Research has shed light on the experimentation and effectiveness of various TAFA tools, focusing on their pedagogical advantages in assisting the teaching of particular linguistic skills (reading, writing, spelling, etc.). Taking an ecological perspective, this paper reports on an ethnographic case study on the various affordances perceived by a group of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers who used a learning management system "designed for Formative assessment (FA) purposes" in China. Data from interviews, teacher journals, and EFL classrooms are collected. Thematic coding of interview data shows that the platform offers a wide range of pedagogical, managerial, assessment, social, and developmental affordances for the EFL teachers, with experienced teachers in FA reporting better affordances both in quality and in quantity. This paper further proposes a model to understand how TAFA can be designed in a way that fosters EFL teaching and student learning. Implications for designing TAFA and future studies are also discussed.
Effects of formative assessment on intrinsic motivation in primary school mathematics instruction

Abstract:Empirical studies on effects of formative assessment (FA) on motivational outcomes and underlying mechanisms are scarce. The core elements of FA, feedback and adaptive teaching behavior, might be helpful in promoting the experience of competence, which in turn is a prerequisite for promoting intrinsic motivation. However, instructional impact also depends on the students' perception of teacher behavior. Therefore, this study ( N = 27 teachers and 613 students) aimed to test whether FA has a positive effect on intrinsic motivation mediated by students' perceived competence support (PCS). In a three-group design, two versions of FA were compared with a control group. In both versions of FA, teachers used a tool for learning progress assessment (LPA), while in one version, teachers received a combination of LPA and additional support consisting of materials for feedback and adaptive instruction (LPA+). A path model for half-longitudinal designs was estimated. Results support the motivational effect of FA. LPA and LPA+ both positively influence students' PCS which is in turn associated with higher intrinsic motivation. A small indirect effect on intrinsic motivation mediated by PCS was shown for both intervention groups, which was only significant for LPA. For LPA+, higher-performing students particularly benefitted from the intervention. Teachers' use of FA practices can foster students' PCS which seems to be a promising way in motivation-enhancing teaching.

Abstract:Abstract In this qualitative study, we investigated how students and teachers responded to the design of a digital self-assessment tool and how they experienced the use of the tool to support understanding and development of twenty-first century skills when working with makerspace activities. There were 65 lower secondary school students and four teachers participating in the study. We used individual interviews with the teachers and group interviews with the students. Data were analysed with thematic coding of transcripts from interviews. The results showed that the participants found that the tool needed technical improvements, but that they gained some insights into the meaning of the included twenty-first century skills (collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, life/social skills and communication). However, it was particularly difficult for students to understand the meaning of life/social skills and how this connected to makerspace activities. Still, both students and teachers argued that it is possible to develop twenty-first century skills during makerspace activities. Teachers also found connections between the skills and learning objectives in the school subject technology, but also in other subjects. We were unsure of how used students were to self-assessment and we believe that teachers’ role is essential, even when it comes to supporting students in self-assessment. Finally, both students and teachers argued that twenty-first century skills are of importance for the future and the project served as an eye-opener in this aspect.

Connecting Activity Implementation Characteristics to Student Buy-In Toward and Utilization of Formative Assessments Within Undergraduate Biology Courses

Abstract:Abstract While formative assessments (FAs) can facilitate learning within undergraduate STEM courses, their impact likely depends on many factors, including how instructors implement them, whether students buy-in to them, and how students utilize them. FAs have many different implementation characteristics, including what kinds of questions are asked, whether questions are asked before or after covering the material in class, how feedback is provided, how students are graded, and other logistical considerations. We conducted 38 semi-structured interviews with students from eight undergraduate biology courses to explore how various implementation characteristics of in-class and out-of-class FAs can influence student perceptions and behaviors. We also interviewed course instructors to provide context for understanding student experiences. Using thematic analysis, we outlined various FA implementation characteristics, characterized the range of FA utilization behaviors reported by students, and identified emergent themes regarding the impact of certain implementation characteristics on student buy-in and utilization. Furthermore, we found that implementation characteristics have combined effects on student engagement and that students will tolerate a degree of “acceptable discomfort” with implementation features that contradict their learning preferences. These results can aid instructor reflection and guide future research on the complex connections between activity implementation and student engagement within STEM disciplines.
Practical approaches to technology-mediated formative assessment for middle school educators

Abstract:This research quantitatively examines how technology-mediated formative assessment techniques affect student learning outcomes in middle school education. The research investigates the correlation between instructors’ technology use, attitudes, and student performance in several academic disciplines using surveys and evaluations conducted with teachers and students. Results show strong positive connections between how often technology is used, the specific digital tools used, how effective technology-mediated formative assessment is judged to be, and the results of student learning. On the other hand, obstacles to implementation were shown to have a negative relationship with student accomplishment. The research emphasizes that technology-mediated formative assessment is more successful in some subjects, emphasizing the necessity to customize teaching methods for each subject’s requirements. The study revealed a positive correlation between student learning outcomes and the frequency of technology use, the types of digital tools used, and the perceived effectiveness of technology-mediated formative assessment. These results suggest ways to improve the use of technology and formative assessment in middle school instruction.
Affordances and Constraints of Using the Socio-Political Debate for Authentic Summative Assessment

Abstract:This article reports from an empirical study on the affordances and constraints for using staged socio-political debates for authentic summative assessment of scientific literacy. The article focuses on conditions for student participation and what purposes emerge in student interaction in a socio-political debate. As part of the research project, a socio-political debate was designed for assessing student competences of scientific literacy in classroom practices. The debate centred on a fictive case about a lake where a decline in the yield of fish had been established. The students were assigned the task of participating in the debate from appointed roles as different stakeholders. Data were collected with video recordings of the enacted student debates. Student participation was analysed with the theoretical framework of communities of practice. The results show that multiple conflicting purposes of the socio-political debate as an assessment task emerged. The emergent purposes were (1) putting scientific knowledge on display versus staying true to one's role, (2) putting scientific knowledge on display versus expressing social responsibility, (3) putting scientific knowledge on display versus winning the debate, and (4) using sources tactically versus using sources critically. As these purposes emerged in classroom practice, tensions between different ways of enacting participation in the debates became manifest. Based on these findings, this article discusses the affordances and constraints for using a socio-political debate for classroom-based assessment of scientific literacy and argumentation in terms of validity, reliability and affordability.

Influencing Intended Teaching Practice: Exploring pre-service teachers’ perceptions of science teaching resources

Abstract:Many researchers have identified and expressed concern over the state of science education internationally, but primary teachers face particular obstacles when teaching science due to their poor science background and low confidence with science. Research has suggested that exemplary resources, or units that work, may be an effective way to support primary teachers. This study explores the effect of one such resource on the intentions of pre-service primary teachers to teach science. The resource in question is Primary Connections, a series of learning resources produced by the Australian Academy of Science specifically designed for primary science. Evaluative studies of Primary Connections have indicated its efficacy with practising primary teachers but there is little evidence of its impact upon pre-service teachers. The purpose of this study was to investigate how effective these quality teaching resources were in influencing the intentions of primary pre-service teachers to teach science after they graduated. The theory of planned behaviour highlighted the linkage between the intentions of the pre-service teachers to teach science, and their awareness of and experiences with using Primary Connections during their education studies. This enabled key factors to be identified which influenced the intentions of the pre-service teachers to use Primary Connections to teach science after they graduate. The study also provided evidence of how quality science teaching resources can be effectively embedded in a teacher education programme as a means of encouraging and supporting pre-service teachers to teach science.

Incorporating Internet resources into classroom practice: pedagogical perspectives and strategies of secondary-school subject teachers

Abstract:Drawing on evidence from lesson observations, teacher interviews and project reports, this paper examines the pedagogical perspectives and strategies of teachers working to incorporate use of Internet resources and associated ICT tools into humanities, social studies and science lessons in English secondary schools. The eight teachers were participants in small-scale, school-based projects in which they investigated self-devised, technology-integrated pedagogical strategies in their own classrooms. Each of the five projects proved to have important distinctive features. This paper provides an overview of project characteristics, followed by a within-project analysis of key pedagogical concepts and concerns. The salient ideas and issues emerging from a cross-project analysis are then summarised in terms of the following themes: Organising lessons around teacher-supported pupil activity; Enhancing lesson resources through use of Internet material; Structuring and supporting pupil access to Internet resources; Instrumenting use of ICT tools to support subject learning; Building and capitalising on pupils’ sense of capability and agency; Supporting and shaping pupil activity through informal teaching; Managing lesson relocation, room configuration and technical malfunction.

Abstract:Recognizing the importance of formative assessment, this mixed-methods study investigates how four teachers and 100 students respond to the new emphasis on formative assessment in English as a foreign language (EFL) writing classes in Norway. While previous studies have examined formative assessment in oral classroom interactions and focused on either studying students or teachers, little research has been conducted on formative assessment of writing where both students and teachers are studied. As such, this study provides new insight. The findings mostly indicate that contradictions are prevalent amongst teachers’ and students’ perceptions of formative assessment of writing. The contradictions revolve around feedback, grades, text revision, self-assessment, and student involvement. The identified contradictions suggest the need for developing a mutual understanding of formative assessment in order to make it useful and meaningful.
