Abstract:AbstractThis paper presents the mechanical design, modeling, and experimental behavior of a novel biomimetic robot inspired by water striders, which are six-legged insects that move on water by propelling themselves using two mesothoracic legs and supporting themselves with the four other legs. As the surface tension of water is too low for the robot to carry heavy equipment, four hollow elongated ellipsoids are used as the supporting legs. Relative to a screw propeller, the rowing legs cause less turbulence in the water. Because of the propeller, this robot can operate in various environments, such as a windy lake, underground pipeline, and even the sea. The total weight of the robot is 439 g. The paper is focused mainly on the hydrodynamic characteristics of the stroke legs and supporting legs. The model of flow over a flat plate is used to describe the hydrodynamic characteristics of the stroke legs, which can be used to improve the shape of the paddle. Several shapes of supporting legs are tested by STAR-CCM+ software to determine the running resistance. By modeling the hydrodynamics of the stroke and supporting legs, the structure of the robot can be improved. As experimentally validated, this robot exhibits good performance on water and can reach an average speed of 125.5 mm/s.

Abstract:This paper investigates the design and implementation of a biomimetic robotic fish with 3D locomotion. The multi-joint body structure of the robotic fish is designed to simulate the carangiform locomotion and the pitching is controlled by a “two-tanks”-based diving system. A GIM-based biomimetic learning approach is adopted to learn and to regenerate carangiform fish swim patterns to the robot. By virtue of the scaling properties, the learning approach is able to generate various 3D motion patterns by tuning parameters without arduous learning or training process. Finally, the performance of the robotic fish system is analyzed through experiments.

Abstract:This article presents a new water strider-like robot with buoyancy as the supporting force that is inspired by the water strider which can stand, glide and leap on the surface of water. The stroke mechanism of the robot has little disturbance to the water and is favorable for the stability of the water strider-like robot without extra action when it enters and leaves the water surface. Based on Interaction force analysis of the water strider-like robot, the stability judgment method of the water strider-like robot in wave condition is proposed which is also applicable to the study of dynamic stability of other quadruped robots on water. Through the analysis of the forward movement of the water strider-like robot, the hydrodynamic modeling of the whole machine has been carried out and the distance that the robot moves forward in a stroke cycle is analyzed.

Because of the novel propeller, this robot can operate in various environments, such as windy lake, underground pipeline, and even in the sea. The total weight of the robot is 439g, with an additional load capacity of 400g. By optimizing the robot's structure and driving mode, this robot possesses good performance on water and can reach an average speed of 125.5mm/s in the water. The stability of the robot will be calculated in this paper. Experiments were conducted in the pool at the Zhoushan Campus of Zhejiang University.

Abstract:The locomotive ability of a water strider that generates an ellipse-like spatial stroke trajectory when moving is proved to improve its moving efficiency and is seldom imitated by water strider robots. A hydrodynamic analysis can predict the performance of the robots, but research in this area is not enough. A buoyancy-supported water strider robot with the ability of producing an ellipse-like spatial stroke trajectory was designed and analyzed in this study. A semiempirical hydrodynamic model suitable for the buoyancy-supported robot was proposed to study the hydrodynamic characteristics, based on the Newton’s second law of motion. The speed, power and efficiency of the robot were analyzed on the basis of the model which confirmed that the robot performing an ellipse-like spatial stroke trajectory was conducive to its moving efficiency. The experimental results verified that the stroke mechanism produced an ellipse-like spatial trajectory in a practical application and that the robot had good mobility. The proposed hydrodynamic model was validated by comparing the theoretical speed of the robot to the experimental results.
AquaMILR: Mechanical intelligence simplifies control of undulatory robots in cluttered fluid environments

Abstract:While undulatory swimming of elongate limbless robots has been extensively studied in open hydrodynamic environments, less research has been focused on limbless locomotion in complex, cluttered aquatic environments. Motivated by the concept of mechanical intelligence, where controls for obstacle navigation can be offloaded to passive body mechanics in terrestrial limbless locomotion, we hypothesize that principles of mechanical intelligence can be extended to cluttered hydrodynamic regimes. To test this, we developed an untethered limbless robot capable of undulatory swimming on water surfaces, utilizing a bilateral cable-driven mechanism inspired by organismal muscle actuation morphology to achieve programmable anisotropic body compliance. We demonstrated through robophysical experiments that, similar to terrestrial locomotion, an appropriate level of body compliance can facilitate emergent swim through complex hydrodynamic environments under pure open-loop control. Moreover, we found that swimming performance depends on undulation frequency, with effective locomotion achieved only within a specific frequency range. This contrasts with highly damped terrestrial regimes, where inertial effects can often be neglected. Further, to enhance performance and address the challenges posed by nondeterministic obstacle distributions, we incorporated computational intelligence by developing a real-time body compliance tuning controller based on cable tension feedback. This controller improves the robot's robustness and overall speed in heterogeneous hydrodynamic environments.

AquaMILR+: Design of an untethered limbless robot for complex aquatic terrain navigation

Abstract:This paper presents AquaMILR+, an untethered limbless robot designed for agile navigation in complex aquatic environments. The robot features a bilateral actuation mechanism that models musculoskeletal actuation in many anguilliform swimming organisms which propagates a moving wave from head to tail allowing open fluid undulatory swimming. This actuation mechanism employs mechanical intelligence, enhancing the robot's maneuverability when interacting with obstacles. AquaMILR+ also includes a compact depth control system inspired by the swim bladder and lung structures of eels and sea snakes. The mechanism, driven by a syringe and telescoping leadscrew, enables depth and pitch control-capabilities that are difficult for most anguilliform swimming robots to achieve. Additional structures, such as fins and a tail, further improve stability and propulsion efficiency. Our tests in both open water and indoor 2D and 3D heterogeneous aquatic environments highlight AquaMILR+'s capabilities and suggest a promising system for complex underwater tasks such as search and rescue and deep-sea exploration.

Nonbiomorphic Passively Adaptive Swimming Robot Enables Agile Propulsion in Cluttered Aquatic Environments

Abstract:Aquatic swimmers, whether natural or artificial, leverage their maneuverability and morphological adaptability to operate successfully in diverse, complex underwater environments. Maneuverability allows swimmers the agility to change speed and direction within a constrained operating space, while morphological adaptability allows their bodies to deform as they avoid obstacles and pass through narrow gaps. In this work, we design a soft, modular, nonbiomorphic swimming robot that emulates the maneuverability and adaptability of biological swimmers. This tethered swimming robot is actuated by a two degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) cable-driven mechanism that enables not only common maneuvers, such as undulatory surging and pitch/yaw rotations, but also a roll rotation maneuver that is steady and controllable. This simple 2-DOF system demonstrates full 3D swimming abilities in a space-constrained underwater test bed. The soft compliant body and passive foldable fins of the swimming robot lend to its morphological adaptability, allowing it to move through narrow gaps, channels, and tunnels and to avoid obstacles without the need for a low-level feedback control strategy. The passive adaptability and maneuvering capabilities of our swimming robot offer a new approach to achieving underwater navigation in complex real-world settings.

Abstract:Aerial–aquatic robots have promising applications due to their ability to operate in air and water with different motion modes. However, challenges such as water/air transition and multimedia movement still limit their development. Inspired by the aerial–aquatic behavior of wild ducks, an aerial–aquatic robot with tunable tilting motors and a delta wing is introduced. The robot can perform multimode motion, including flying in air, swimming on the water surface, transitioning between air and water, and diving underwater. Besides, the buoyancy design enables the robot to float at the air–water interface without consuming energy. Herein, the performance of the robot, including vertical and horizontal cross‐media performance, power consumption, and endurance in various motion modes, is evaluated. The field experiments show that the proposed robot possesses multimode motion and high maneuverability. This study provides a new idea for the structural design of next‐generation practical aerial–aquatic robots.

Abstract:Biological swimmers often exhibit rich physics due to the hydrodynamic coupling between the fluid flow and the immersed deforming body. Complexity and nonlinearity of their behaviors have imposed significant challenges in design and analysis of robots that mimick biological swimming motions. Inspired by the recent experimental studies of soft robotic swimmers, we develop a fictitious domain/active strain method to numerically study the swimming motion of thin, light-weight robots composed of smart materials that can actively undergo reversible large deformations (e.g., liquid crystal elastomer). We assume the elastic material to be neo-Hookean, and behave like an artificial “muscle” which, when stimulated, generates a principal stretch of contraction. We adopt an active strain approach to impose contractive strains to drive elastic deformation following a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient tensor. The hydrodynamic coupling between the fluid and the solid is then resolved by using the fictitious domain method where the induced flow field is virtually extended into the solid domain. Pseudo body forces are employed to enforce the interior fictitious fluid motion to be the same as the solid structure dynamics. Using the fictitious domain/active strain method, we perform a series of numerical explorations for soft robotic swimmers with both 2D and 3D geometries. We demonstrate that these robot prototypes can effectively perform undulatory swimming and jet-propulsion when active strains are appropriately distributed on the elastica.
Highly agile flat swimming robot

Abstract:Exploring bodies of water on their surface allows robots to efficiently communicate and harvest energy from the sun. On the water surface, however, robots often face highly unstructured environments, cluttered with plant matter, animals, and debris. We report a fast (5.1 cm/s translation and 195 °/s rotation), centimeter-scale swimming robot with high maneuverability and autonomous untethered operation. Locomotion is enabled by a pair of soft, millimeter-thin, undulating pectoral fins, in which traveling waves are electrically excited to generate propulsion. The robots navigate through narrow spaces, through grassy plants, and push objects weighing over 16x their body weight. Such robots can allow distributed environmental monitoring as well as continuous measurement of plant and water parameters for aqua-farming.

Abstract:This article presents the design, simulation, and experimental validation of a novel modular aquatic snake robot capable of surface locomotion. The modular structure allows each unit to function independently, facilitating ease of maintenance and adaptability to diverse aquatic environments. Employing the material point method with the moving least squares (MPM-MLS) simulation technique, the robot's dynamic behavior was analyzed, yielding reliable results. The control algorithm, integral to the robot's autonomous navigation, was implemented to enable forward propulsion at high speed, steering, and obstacle detection and avoidance. Extensive testing of the aquatic snake robot was conducted, demonstrating its practical viability. The robot showcased promising swimming capabilities, achieving high speeds and maneuverability. Furthermore, the obstacle detection and avoidance mechanisms were proven effective, showing the robot's ability to navigate through dynamic environments. The presented aquatic snake robot represents an advancement in the field of underwater robotics, offering a modular and versatile solution for tasks ranging from environmental monitoring to search and rescue operations.

Abstract:<p>It is a huge challenge for an amphibious robot with a high locomotory performance to locomote in amphibious environments, including crawling on rough terrains, maneuvering underwater, and launching and landing motion between land and water. To deal with such a challenge, a miniature bio-inspired Amphibious Spherical Robot (ASRobot) with a Legged, Multi-vectored Water-jet Composite Driving Mechanism (LMWCDM) has been designed. In this paper, locomotory performance of the robot in amphibious field environments is studied. First, a simplified kinematic model was built to study crawling gaits, and with an online adjustment mechanism, the gaits were adjusted, enabling the robot to climb up slopes more stably. Then, using a dynamic underwater model, a real-time dynamic thrust vectoring allocation strategy is proposed to generate the water-jet thrust and joint angles using desired forces and torques computed by four parallel PID algorithms. Finally, a set of experiments were carried out to evaluate the performance of on land locomotion and underwater locomotion. Further, outdoor locomotion experiments including crawling on various terrains, launching and landing motion, were conducted in field environments. The results demonstrate that the robot prototype possesses the high locomotory performance which endows its wide application of disaster rescue, reconnaissance and resource exploration in amphibious environments.</p>

Abstract:A large challenge in the field of soft amphibious robotics is achieving high maneuverability and multiterrain adaptability through multimodal locomotion in hybrid terrestrial–aquatic environments. To address this issue, drawing inspiration from fruit-fly larvae and Spanish dancer sea slugs, a novel tethered soft amphibious robot with multimodal locomotion is proposed in this article, performing forward, backward, turning, and self-overturn motions both on land and in water. It leverages plastic-sheet-reinforced thin pneumatic actuators, which are constructed from thermoplastic membranes and embedded with a nonstretchable plastic sheet, enabling bidirectional bending with large angles. The robot achieves a forward jumping velocity of 1.77 BL/s and a forward swimming velocity of 0.69 BL/s, both faster than previously reported soft amphibious robots; connecting two actuator units in parallel, it achieves agile turning with a velocity of 111.8 /s. Our proposed robot demonstrates exceptional multiterrain adaptability, facile terrestrial–aquatic transition capabilities, and underwater buoyancy adjustment ability. Especially when accidentally overturned, it can recover itself without external assistance, a capability rarely achieved by other soft robots.

Abstract:Many different robots have been designed and built to work under water. In many cases, researchers have chosen to use bio-inspired platforms. In most cases, the main goal of the fish inspired robots has been set to autonomously swim and maneuver in an environment spacious compared to the fish's size. In this paper, the identification control of a low-cost fish-inspired robot is studied with the goal of building a mechanism to not only swim in water but able to interact with its narrow environment. The robotic fish under study uses tail propulsion as main locomotion. Moreover, proper propulsion regimes are identified and used to model and control thrust generated by propulsion.

Abstract:Legged robots have received widespread attention in academia and engineering owing to their excellent terrain adaptability. However, most legged robots can only adapt to high-hardness environments instead of flexible environments. Expanding the motion range of legged robots to water is a promising but challenging work. Inspired by basilisk lizards which can run on water surfaces by feet, this paper proposes a bipedal robot for water running by hydrodynamics instead of buoyancy. According to the motion parameters of the basilisk lizard during water running, a single-degree of freedom bipedal mechanism is proposed to reproduce the motion trajectory of the feet of the basilisk lizard. Scale optimization is conducted by a particle swarm optimization algorithm to determine the geometrical parameters of the mechanism. The effects of motion frequency and foot area on mechanism performance are studied and the optimal solutions are determined by the maximum single-cycle lift impulse through numerical calculations. A bipedal water running robot prototype was fabricated, and the experimental results show that the prototype can generate enough support for the robot running on the water by providing a maximum lift of 2.4 times its weight (160 g) and reaching a horizontal forward speed range of 0.3-0.8 m s-1, compared with the basilisk lizard weighs 2-200 g, generates a lift impulse that is 111%-225% of its body weight, and moves at a speed of 1.3 ± 0.1 m s-1.
A Novel Aerial-Aquatic Locomotion Robot with Variable Stiffness Propulsion Module

Abstract:In recent years, the development of robots capable of operating in both aerial and aquatic environments has gained significant attention. This study presents the design and fabrication of a novel aerial-aquatic locomotion robot (AALR). Inspired by the diving beetle, the AALR incorporates a biomimetic propulsion mechanism with power and recovery strokes. The variable stiffness propulsion module (VSPM) uses low melting point alloy (LMPA) and variable stiffness joints (VSJ) to achieve efficient aquatic locomotion while reduce harm to marine life. The AALR's innovative design integrates the VSPM into the arms of a traditional quadrotor, allowing for effective aerial-aquatic locomotion. The VSPM adjusts joint stiffness through temperature control, meeting locomotion requirements in both aerial and aquatic modes. A dynamic model for the VSPM was developed, with optimized dimensional parameters to increase propulsion force. Experiments focused on aquatic mode analysis and demonstrated the AALR's swimming capability, achieving a maximum swimming speed of 77 mm/s underwater. The results confirm the AALR's effective performance in water environment, highlighting its potential for versatile, eco-friendly operations.

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing swimmers are designed integrating chemical protein motors and photoresponsive liquid crystal networks. This approach gives access to five interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via shape‐morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects, offers untethered and orthogonal power and control for small‐scale swimming soft robots. Aquatic insects have developed versatile locomotion mechanisms that have served as a source of inspiration for decades in the development of small‐scale swimming robots. However, despite recent advances in the field, efficient, untethered, and integrated powering, actuation, and control of small‐scale robots remains a challenge due to the out‐of‐equilibrium and dissipative nature of the driving physical and chemical phenomena. Here, we have designed small‐scale, bioinspired aquatic locomotors with programmable deterministic trajectories that integrate self‐propelled chemical motors and photoresponsive shape‐morphing structures. A Marangoni motor system is developed integrating structural protein networks that self‐regulate the release of chemical fuel with photochemical liquid crystal network (LCN) actuators that change their shape and deform in and out of the surface of water. While the diffusion of fuel from the motor system regulates the propulsion, the dissipative photochemical deformation of LCNs provides locomotors with control over the directionality of motion at the air‐water interface. This approach gives access to five different but interchangeable modes of locomotion within a single swimming robot via morphing of the soft structure. The proposed design, which mimics the mechanisms of surface gliding and posture change of semiaquatic insects such as water treaders, offers solutions for autonomous swimming soft robots via untethered and orthogonal power and control.

Multiple forces facilitate the aquatic acrobatics of grasshopper and bioinspired robot

Abstract:Aquatic locomotion is challenging for land-dwelling creatures because of the high degree of fluidity with which the water yields to loads. We surprisingly found that the Chinese rice grasshopper Oxya chinensis, known for its terrestrial acrobatics, could swiftly launch itself off the water's surface in around 25 ms and seamlessly transition into flight. Biological observations showed that jumping grasshoppers use their front and middle legs to tilt up bodies first and then lift off by propelling the water toward the lower back with hind legs at angular speeds of up to 18°/ms, whereas the swimming grasshoppers swing their front and middle legs in nearly horizontal planes and move hind legs less violently (~8°/ms). Force measurement and model analysis indicated that the weight support could be achieved by hydrostatics which are proportionate to the mass of the grasshoppers, while the propulsions for motion are derived from the controlled limb-water interactions (i.e., the hydrodynamics). After learning the structural and behavioral strategies of the grasshoppers, a robot was created and was capable of swimming and jumping on the water surface like the insects, further demonstrating the effectiveness of decoupling the challenges of aquatic locomotion by the combined use of the static and dynamic hydro forces. This work not only uncovered the combined mechanisms responsible for facilitating aquatic acrobatics in this species but also laid a foundation for developing bioinspired robots that can locomote across multiple media.
