Abstract:Control of vector(s) or mosquitoes, in general, through biolarvicide as an alternate biocontrol agent is a greatest desire. We evaluated a water-dispersible granular formulation biolarvicide Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti, H-14 serotype; VectoBac(®) WDG) in the laboratory and also in the field against two principal malaria vectors, Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles stephensi. Laboratory evaluations against laboratory-reared immature of the two species were carried out at a temperature of 28°C ± 2°C and 70%-80% relative humidity. Field trials were conducted in a rural area and in Bangalore city, Karnataka, South India. First trial against the rural vector An. culicifacies was carried out in stone quarry pits at dosages of 0.05, 0.2, and 1 g/m(2). The second trial against urban vector An. stephensi was carried out in ring wells at 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 1 g/m(2) dosages. Laboratory tests revealed increased efficacy against An. stephensi. The fifty percent lethal concentration (LC(50)) and LC(90) values against An. culicifacies and An. stephensi were 0.348 and 1.008 mg/L (χ(2) = 8.49; p > 0.05) and 0.245 and 0.533 mg/L (χ(2) = 4.67; p < 0.05), respectively. Based on the findings of no pupal production in the field, the formulation was effective up to 14 days at 0.2 g/m(2) or more appropriately at 0.25 g/m(2) dose for both the species under field conditions. We discuss how this new formulation was evaluated against An. culicifacies and An. stephensi under laboratory and field conditions. No adverse effects were observed on the nontarget species such as frogs, their tadpoles, small local fish, Notonectid bugs, and water scatters. We conclude that VectoBac WDG is effective at 0.25 g/m(2) and be recommended for its use in the vector-borne disease control program under integrated vector management concept.

Abstract:Introduction: School-based comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is a powerful tool that provides young people with information on all aspects of sexuality and is aimed at protecting their sexual and reproductive health and well-being throughout their lives. Currently, CSE is not integrated within the schools' curriculum in Italy. This study describes the co-construction, implementation, and evaluation of a CSE project piloted among students attending lower secondary schools, in four regions of Italy. Evidence-based evaluation will be helpful in promote the inclusion of CSE programs in the Italian schools' curriculum. Methods: The pilot scheme was co-constructed by a multidisciplinary curriculum development group through a Delphi process, including educators who conducted the activities. The evaluation followed three directions: the program (based on a literature review of CSE principles and recommended characteristics), implementation (assessing the execution of the program through the analysis of the reflection tools used by the educators), and short-term outcomes (assessing critical thinking and conscious behavioural choices through pre-post and satisfaction surveys). Results: The main goal, learning modules and content were defined and structured in five interventions with the students, and two with families and teachers. A total of 638 students were involved in the activity, across 11 schools. Data analysis of pre/post surveys reported a significant increase in knowledge in 12 of the 15 items investigated (p < 0.05), and a high level of satisfaction with the topics addressed. Qualitative analysis added information on the pivotal role of educators in CSE. Conclusions: The national piloting of this educational activity provided positive insights regarding the co-construction, implementation and short-outcome evaluation, suggesting potential for scalability and future inclusion of CSE in the curricula of Italian schools.

Abstract:As part of a five year plan (2019–2023), the Informed Health Choices Project, is developing and evaluating resources for helping secondary school students learn to think critically about health claims and choices. We will bring together key stakeholders; such as secondary school teachers and students, our main target for the IHC secondary school resources, school administrators, policy makers, curriculum development specialists and parents, to enable us gain insight about the context.Using a multi-stage stratified sampling method, we will identify a representative sample of secondary schools with varied characteristics that might modify the effects of the learning resources such as, the school location (rural, semi-urban or urban), ownership (private, public) and ICT facilities (under resourced, highly resourced). A sample of schools will be randomly selected from the schools in each stratum. We will aim to recruit a diverse sample of students and secondary school teachers from those schools. Other stakeholders will be purposively selected to ensure a diverse range of experience and expertise.Together with the teacher and student networks and the advisory panels, we will establish measurable success criteria that reflect the objectives of engaging stakeholders at the start of the project and evaluate the extent to which those criteria were met at the end of the project.We aim for an increase in research uptake, improve quality and appropriateness of research results, accountability and social justice.

Abstract:A 42 year old male Spanish patient who presented since one year a symptomatic stage IV C1,C2,D HIV infection (Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, cerebral toxoplasmosis, esophageal candidiasis, Kaposi's sarcoma) became progressively asthenic with weight loss, diarrhea, fever and complained about bone pain. These symptoms could be attributed to visceral leishmaniasis. This novel opportunistic infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin in HIV+ patients coming from or having travelled in endemic areas.

Abstract:The aim of the "Smuovi La Salute" ("Shake Your Health") project was to implement an integrated and comprehensive model to prevent and treat overweight and obesity in low socioeconomic status (SES) and minority groups living in three different districts in the north of Italy. An app and a cookbook promoting transcultural nutrition and a healthy lifestyle were developed, and no-cost physical activities were organized. Healthy lifestyle teaching was implemented in 30 primary school classrooms. Learning was assessed through pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. At the Obesity Pediatric Clinic, overweight and obese children of migrant background or low SES were trained on transcultural nutrition and invited to participate in the project. Primary school students increased their knowledge about healthy nutrition and the importance of physical activity (p-value < 0.001). At the Obesity Pediatric Clinic, after 6 months, pre-post-intervention variation in their consumption of vegetables and fruit was +14% (p < 0.0001) and no variation in physical activity habits occurred (p = 0.34). In this group, the BMI z-score was not significantly decreased (-0.17 ± 0.63, p= 0.15). This study demonstrates the feasibility and efficacy of telematic tools and targeted community approaches in improving students' knowledge with regard to healthy lifestyle, particularly in schools in suburbs with a high density of migrants and SES families. Comprehensive and integrated approaches provided to the obese patients remain mostly ineffective.

Abstract:We review our atomic orbital formulation of the electron correlation problem that leads to linear scaling methods for large molecules. We also study the correlation portion of the binding forces in crystal urea using a cluster approach. Clusters containing up to 15 urea molecules and 1,200 basis functions have been considered here. At the MP2/6‐31G** level of theory, after correction for basis set superposition error, correlation is found to account for 4.15 kcal/mol in the stability of crystal urea compared to the gas phase. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Promoting adolescents' cultural identity development: A pilot study of the identity project intervention in Italy

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of the Italian adaptation of the Identity Project (IP), a school-based intervention promoting cultural identity formation in adolescence. Method: Participants were 138 adolescents (Mage = 15.66 years, SD = 0.84, 63% female, 37% of immigrant descent) from nine classrooms that were assigned to the intervention or control condition based on teachers' indications to ensure sustainability. The curriculum was delivered online due to COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions in spring 2021. Youth self-reported on their cultural identity exploration and resolution 1 week before and 1 week after the intervention. Feedback on the cultural appropriateness and salience of the program was gathered from students and teachers via online focus groups. Results: The analysis of qualitative data supported the feasibility and acceptability of the culturally adapted IP, with students expressing appreciation for its interactive approach and the possibility to learn about their classmates' cultural origins. Analysis of quantitative data indicated that the program led to increases in cultural identity resolution, but not exploration. Conclusion: This pilot implementation confirms the importance of intervening in cultural identity development in multiethnic classrooms in Italy, although further work is necessary to better understand if nonsignificant findings for exploration were due to measurement issues introduced by the COVID-19 pandemic or if program modifications are necessary to stimulate adolescents' engagement in exploration processes. Abstract:This narrative review addresses the integration of health education into school curricula in South Tyrol, an Italian province with significant cultural and linguistic diversity. This review's objective is to analyze current health education initiatives and propose a strategic framework to enhance school-based health education, aiming to improve student well-being post-pandemic. The review synthesizes global examples and recent local studies, highlighting the importance of comprehensive teacher training, mindfulness-based interventions, culturally sensitive health education, and community engagement. The key findings indicate that current health education programs in South Tyrol are insufficient to meet immediate public health needs, such as low vaccine uptake and mental health challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed strategic framework seeks to align educational strategies with the diverse needs of South Tyrol's student population, thereby improving health literacy and behavior and strengthening the region's public health infrastructure.

Abstract:Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and the presence of restricted interests and repetitive behaviours (Hodges et al., 2020). According to the American guidelines, the impact of disability can affect the family's well-being and have consequences for the siblings and the organisation of family life, both economically and psychologically (ASHA, 2006). Given the lack of parent-focused measures to assess these aspects, Leadbitter et al. (2018) developed the Autism Family Experience Questionnaire (AFEQ), aimed at assessing priority outcomes for parents of preschool-aged children with ASD who were previously enrolled in the Pre-school Autism Communication Trial, a randomized controlled trial study on parent-mediated intervention (Leadbitter et al., 2018; Green et al., 2010). The aim of the present study was to translate and culturally adapt into Italian the AFEQ (Leadbitter et al., 2018) and to verify the main psychometric performances of the adapted version. Methods Linguistic validation and cross-cultural adaptation to the Italian context were based on the guidelines of Beaton et al. (2000). Once the direct and inverse translation phases were completed with the favourable opinion of the panel of experts recruited for the study, further tests on the psychometric properties of the adapted questionnaire were required. Following the consensus obtained from the authors of the original questionnaire and according to the recommendations of Polit et al. (2007) and Polit and Beck (2006), a second panel of selected experts determined the content validity of the adapted instrument through the calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI), according to the indications for each item (I-CVI) and for the scale (S-CVI). Results A medical doctor and a non-medical expert, both native Italian speakers with an adequate knowledge of English, independently produced a translation. The latter were then compared and discrepancies in the translation process were resolved in a discussion. Two independent, native English-speaking translators produced reverse translations of the resulting version; neither of them had experience or knowledge of the objectives of the study nor of the healthcare sector. The two translations were similar to each other and one of them was almost identical to the original. The original questionnaire and the material obtained in the previous stages were made available to an interdisciplinary panel of experts recruited for the study. All members agreed on that T1-2 was the only accepted translated version. Analysing the I-CVI, all items exceeded the expected cut-off of >/= 0.78 except for one (I-CVI value 0.6). The S-CVI reached and exceeded the cut-off when obtained with the S-CVI/Ave calculation mode, while with the S-CVI/UA the value was 0.73 and was slightly below the cut-off. Discussion and Conclusion To the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to develop an Italian version of the AFEQ questionnaire. The involvement of two translators in the forward and reverse translation phases avoided, in the former, the presence of bias and the enrichment of the synthesis process; in the latter, it facilitated the verification of the semantic equivalence of the translation. Evaluation of the final version by a panel of experts ensured its linguistic validity. The Italian version of the AFEQ obtains very positive I-CVI, S-CVI/UA-Ave values, meaning a very positive assessment of the scale items regarding their relevance for the investigated constructs. As the study is still in progress, it has not yet been possible to carry out a test of the adapted version that coincides with the final phase of the adaptation process described by Beaton et al. (2000). The work represents a first step in the Italian validation process of the questionnaire, which is still ongoing.

Abstract:Introduction: Strengthening primary care services with a focus on comprehensive Primary Health Care principles necessitates collaborative work practices within interprofessional teams. In Italy, the Local Health District of Florence embodies a comprehensive Primary Health Care -inspired model of primary care, prominently featuring the House of Community concept. This work presents findings and insights from a multidisciplinary, interprofessional education activity tailored for healthcare professionals, researchers, and students actively participating in the primary care reorganization. Methods: The activity was structured using a four-phase learning model (imaginative, analytical, common sense, and dynamic), aligning with four distinct activities (brainstorming, lecture, case study, and group project). Results: Key themes that emerged encompassed the significance of nurturing relationships among team members, the aspiration for an inclusive work environment, the vital role of community engagement and collaboration across various services, disciplines, and sectors beyond healthcare. Discussion: These themes highlight the essential attributes of successful primary care practices built on the principles of comprehensive comprehensive Primary Health Care. Throughout the innovation process of primary care services, interprofessional education training events emerged as indispensable components for bolstering implementation and ensuring sustainability. This study underscores the crucial role of interprofessional education in bridging the gap between theoretical constructs and practical application, emphasizing that comprehensive Primary Healthcare principles find tangible manifestation in real-world scenarios.
Italian Version of QI-Disability for QoL Evaluation in Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disability: Translation and Cross-Cultural Adaptation Process

Abstract:Children and adolescents with Intellectual Disability (ID) experience a worse Quality-of-Life (QoL) relative to typically developing peers. Thus, QoL evaluation is important for identifying support needs and improving rehabilitation effectiveness. Nevertheless, currently in Italy there are not tools with this scope. This study aims to translate and cross-culturally adapt the Quality-of-Life Inventory-Disability (QI-Disability) into Italian. The process consisted in forward-backward translation, cross-cultural adaptation and cognitive debriefing. Eventually, QI-Disability was conceptually and semantically equivalent to the original one. A validation study is necessary to make the tool available in Italian clinical practice and educational contexts to improve these children's QoL.
Normative data and construct validity of a cross-linguistic functional speech outcome, the Intelligibility in Context Scale: Italian (ICS-I)

Abstract:Objectives: The Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS) is a parent-report scale, world-wide translated and widely validated, by which parents can rate their child's functional speech intelligibility according to seven different communicative partners. The study aimed to report and discuss the normative data of the Italian version of ICS (ICS-I) in Italian-speaking preschool children, and to investigate whether the age influences the ICS-I scores (construct validity). Socio-economic status (SES) of the family were investigated and compared to parents' ratings on child's speech intelligibility. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted. Italian-speaking children aged 3-6 years (n = 355; mean age = 56.06 months; SD = 9.8 months), without major developmental impairment, were recruited in kindergartens throughout a convenience sampling. Parents completed a self-report form on their family SES (educational level and employment status of fathers and mothers). Children were independently rated by their mothers (ICS-Im) and fathers (ICS-If). Results: Results show that ICS normative data for the Italian preschool population (ICS-Im = 4.52; SD = 0.46; ICS-If = 4.47; SD = 0.49) are consistent with previous evidence found in other languages, suggesting that ICS could be a potential cross-linguistic tool to assess functional intelligibility. A statistically significant (p < 0.001) improvement in ICS-I score was found with increase of age (construct validity). No evidence of association (p > 0.05) with ICS-I was found for SES family. Conclusion: The study provides normative data of the functional intelligibility assessed by a subjective parental scale. As for other previous international studies, ICS-I normative data suggest that a preschool child without major impairment shows a high degree of speech intelligibility, even if minimal differences of intelligibility are reported for different communicative partners. The current findings support clinicians and researchers in implementing ICS-I in typical and also in atypical population with different SES background and promoting its application as a potential outcome measure in children with Speech Sound Disorders.
Development and validation of the Environmental Health Literacy Index: a new tool to assess the environmental health literacy among university students

Abstract:Environmental health literacy (EHL) is a rather recent concept that applies health literacy skills to environmental issues. Research in this field is still at the beginning, and there is currently no existing tool in the literature designed to comprehensively assess individual general EHL among university students. The aim of our study is to fill this gap through the validation of the Environmental Health Literacy Index (EHLI) in such a target group. We adapted a previously administered survey, originally completed by 4778 university students from various Italian universities. Starting from the original questionnaire, our methodology involved a three-round item selection process, followed by a comprehensive evaluation of the instrument's psychometric properties. The EHLI consists of 13 Likert-type items, covering three primary domains of health literacy: functional (six items), interactive (three items), and critical (four items). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient is 0.808 for the global scale, while it stands at 0.888 for the functional, 0.795 for the critical, and 0.471 for the interactive components. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve reached a value of 0.643. Spearman correlation analysis revealed a significant yet slight correlation between EHLI and both functional health literacy score and the extent of pro-environmental behaviors adoption. Our study serves as an important initial step in developing a tool able to evaluate the EHL of university-aged individuals. Further research efforts may improve the questionnaire's validity and completeness, as well as to explore its applicability to different age groups.

Abstract:In the last two decades, several studies have reported on the benefits of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) on students' affective and cognitive gains. These studies, however, have mainly concentrated on the implementation of CLIL within the formal (school) context, with very little research on its impact in non-formal (out-of-school) contexts. Thus, the present article addresses this gap by describing an action research project aimed at understanding secondary school students' attitudes towards the integration of CLIL and museum-based pedagogies. The project involved 284 students (14–16 years old) in northern Italy, who participated in a CLIL museum visit on Animal Classification through English at the <i>Natural History Museum</i> in Venice. A mixed-method research design was implemented and data was collected through students' questionnaires and focus groups. Results reveal that students showed very positive attitudes towards taking part in a CLIL museum visit based on the interaction among the following dimensions: engagement with museum objects, use of English beyond the classroom, methodology and students' interests, self-concept and career plans.
Sex Education in Italy: An Overview of 15 Years of Projects in Primary and Secondary Schools

Abstract:School-based sex education is essential to improve the knowledge and behavior of young people. Unlike most European countries, sex education in Italy is not compulsory in the school curriculum. Therefore, to assess potential gaps, the main aim of this study was to explore Italian regional initiatives about sex education. A review of gray literature from 2006 to 2021 was conducted in December 2021 on national databases and institutional websites of each Italian region, during which official documents on regional sex education programs were selected. Moreover, a rapid systematic review was carried out in scientific databases to find more information. For both reviews, the sex education topics recommended by UNESCO were used for extracting and analyzing data. A total of 12 Italian regions out of 20 had at least one sex education program, for a total of 39 projects. Overall, all the topics identified by UNESCO have been covered, with considerable differences between northern, central, and southern Italy. Contraception, love, marriage, partnerships, and family were the main topics discussed (hosted in 92% of the regions). Only 25% of the regions discussed pregnancy and birth. Disability was the least debated topic (17%). The rapid systematic review showed that relevant improvements were achieved after sex education interventions. In conclusion, this study underlined important limitations to the implementation of school-based sex education in Italy. Hence, it is necessary to increase sex education interventions to reach adequate standards and flatten the differences not only between Italian regions but also between Italy and other European countries.
Italian translation and cultural adaptation of health literate organisation self-assessment tool

Abstract:Abstract Background The International Working Group Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Literate Healthcare Organizations has developed an English-language self-assessment tool for Organizational Health Literacy of Hospitals, designed to quality managers of healthcare organizations. It aims to diagnose strengths and weaknesses of the organization's health literacy, and our goal is to translate and culturally adapt it for Italy. Methods We have been following the Translation, Review, Adjudication, Pretesting, and Documentation team model for cross-cultural translation of questionnaires. Initially, two separate teams of translators worked independently to translate the tool from English to Italian. Next, the national coordinator organised six meetings to discuss, integrate, and unify the two versions, and any translation difficulties and suggested solutions were reported in the supporting tool that will be sent along with final agreed version of the tool to the International Coordination Centre. Finally, two experts will review the translation for the cultural adaptation. Results Difficulties related to comprehension in translation can arise from ambiguity in word choice, the need for contextual precision, and a lack of cultural appropriateness. The translation of English words that have become part of Italian language (e.g. ‘feedback', ‘stakeholder', ‘management', ‘standard') was also hugely discussed between the teams. Finally, to categorize the information entered into the supporting tool, 50% pertains to adaptation to context, 30% to simplification or clarification, and 20% to non-applicable items. Conclusions Cultural adaptation will improve the translation by reducing ambiguities, providing contextual clarifications, and rephrasing items to make them more appropriate for Italy. The Italian version of the tool will be piloted in local hospitals to support healthcare operators, patients, and the community in better managing the complexities of healthcare organizations. Key messages • Translation of health literacy self-assessment tool for Italian hospitals, aiming to reduce ambiguity and increase appropriateness for local context. • Culturally adapted tool to diagnose organizational health literacy in Italian hospitals will help healthcare organizations deal with complexity of healthcare and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract:Background: Interventions within preschool settings have gained prominence due to the need to increase physical activity (PA) in early childhood. We first developed a 10-week preschool-based behaviour change intervention, guided by the UK Medical Research Council's framework for complex interventions. We then conducted a cluster feasibility randomised controlled trial (RCT) among young children. Aim: This process evaluation was embedded within the cluster feasibility RCT and aimed to assess the acceptability of the 10-week IAAH intervention among both preschool staff and parents. Methods: The study utilised a mixed method, involving post-intervention questionnaires completed by preschool staff (n = 4) and children's parents/caregivers (n = 9) and focus groups with preschool staff (n = 3) and parents/caregivers (n = 7). Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS to calculate acceptability scores, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis using NVivo 12. Results: The intervention was well-received, with preschool staff reporting a 94.5% acceptability rate (mean score of 10.4 out of 11) and parents/caregivers indicating an 86% acceptance rate (mean score of 5.2 out of 6). Thematic analysis of focus group discussions revealed facilitators to intervention delivery, such as user-friendly materials and alignment with preschool curricula, and identified barriers, including time constraints, spatial limitations, and policy conflicts. Parental engagement was hindered by time restrictions, although the intervention materials were praised for their clarity and visual appeal. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the IAAH programme was acceptable to both preschool staff and parents. However, the identified barriers to intervention delivery and engagement should be addressed in the planning of a future cluster RCT to evaluate the efficacy of the intervention.
