Abstract:Controlling morphology of liquids on solid surfaces plays an important role in both fundamental research and practical applications. We found that, the shape of the liquid after contact between a droplet and a surface could be tuned by designing the hydrophilic micropillar arrays forming this surface. Such a wetting behavior is a result of imbibition in the micropillars, leading to specific final spreading distance and pattern of the droplet. During the spreading, the morphology of the droplet is controlled by both the arrangement and shape of the micropillars. The experimental results indicated that the surface energy barriers caused by the micropillar edges was a key factor accounting for the anisotropic spreading of the liquid. Moreover, the shape of the meniscus at the front location of the spreading liquid was rebuilt based on computational simulation, which agreed well with the experimental data. Interesting, the time-dependence of the displacement of the liquid transport at the edges was found to be different from that of a wicking film. Theoretical models were accordingly proposed to reveal the shape formation of liquids on such micropillar-structured surfaces.
How Droplets Move on Surfaces with Directional Chemical Heterogeneities

Abstract:The nature of adhesion of droplets to surfaces is a long pending scientific question. With the evolution of complex surfaces, quantification and prediction of these forces become intricate. Nevertheless, understanding these forces is highly relevant for explaining liquid transport in nature and establishing design guidelines for manmade interfaces. Here, it is shown that the adhesion of droplets is highly sensitive to the directionality of chemical heterogeneities. Asymmetric biphilic surfaces, with hydrophilic triangular patches and superhydrophobic surrounding, impose direction-dependent adhesion. This dependency is quantified by bending beam experiments, in which a droplet is dragged on the surface in two opposite directions. In addition, force calculation derived from droplet roll-off experiments reveal accordant trends. The lower the aspect ratio, the higher the difference of adhesion forces between the two directions. The shape of the fluid contact line on the biphilic surfaces elucidates the origin of the direction-dependent adhesion. Namely, the droplet receding part pins to a higher number of patches when moving toward to apex in comparison to the opposite direction. When the triangular patches are more slender, this asymmetry cancels. These findings improve the understanding of droplet adhesion to biphilic surfaces particularly, and surfaces with wetting heterogeneities in general.

Femtosecond laser patterned superhydrophobic surface with anisotropic sliding for droplet manipulation

Abstract:Patterned superhydrophobic surfaces have a wide range of applications in terms of microfluidic devices. In this work, a simple and robust method is proposed to fabricate patterned superhydrophobic surfaces by two combined steps including femtosecond laser microfabrication and immersion treatment. The obtained surface exhibits contact angles of 170.0°, 167.6°, and 169.5°, and sliding angles of 5.8°, 6.0°, and 3.9° for 12 μL, 18 μL, and 30 μL water droplets, respectively. The high-adhesion hydrophobic linear pattern combined with the surrounding low-adhesion superhydrophobic surface exhibits controllable wettability and pronounced liquid-sliding anisotropy. Since the contact angle and the adhesion force can be controlled by adjusting the width of the linear pattern, the droplet motion can be directionally modulated. As the line width increases, the sliding angle in parallel direction can be regulated from 18.9° to 90°, from 15.3° to 47.6°, and from 8.6° to 25.0° for 12 μL, 18 μL, and 30 μL water droplets, respectively. Based on the modified Furmidge equation, the relationship between adhesion and liquid-solid interface width can be reasonably explained. Furthermore, the potential applications of the patterned surfaces for droplet transport and mixing are explored. The wettability of the superhydrophobic surfaces to liquids of different types and pH is also investigated. The work presented here has the potential to advance femtosecond laser scanning as a simple, precise, and controllable method for fabricating patterned superhydrophobic surfaces, and to accelerate their applications in parallel reactors, chemical micro-assays, drug delivery systems and so on.

A simple way to achieve pattern-dependent tunable adhesion in superhydrophobic surfaces by a femtosecond laser

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new approach to the tunable adhesive superhydrophobic surfaces consisting of periodic hydrophobic patterns and superhydrophobic structures by femtosecond (fs) laser irradiation on silicon. The surfaces are composed of periodic hydrophobic patterns (triangle, circle, and rhombus) and superhydrophobic structures (dual-scale spikes induced by a fs laser). Our results reveal that the adhesive forces of as-prepared surfaces can be tuned by varying the area ratio (AR(s-h)) of superhydrophobic domain to hydrophobic domain, thus resulting in tunable static and dynamic wettabilities. By increasing AR(s-h), (i) the static wetting property, which is characterized by the minimum water droplet volume that enables a droplet to land on the surface, can be tailored from 1 μL to 9 μL; (ii) the sliding angle can be flexibly adjusted, ranging from >90° (a droplet cannot slide off when the sample is positioned upside down) to 5°; and (iii) the droplet rebound behaviors can be modulated from partial rebound to triple rebound. In addition, the Cassie-Baxter model and the sliding angle model are used to speculate the contact angles and sliding angles to provide potentially theoretical models to design slippery-to-sticky superhydrophobic surfaces. The tunable adhesive superhydrophobic surfaces achieved by fs laser microfabrication may be potentially used in microfluidic systems to modulate the mobility of liquid droplets.
Droplet state and mechanism of contact line movement on laser-textured aluminum alloy surfaces

Abstract:Hypothesis: Contact line movement over laser-textured metal alloy surfaces depends on the texture, droplet state, inversion of wettability, and liquid flow rate. Experiments: Ordered and anisotropic textures were created by a nanosecond pulse laser on aluminum-magnesium alloy surfaces. Microrelief was studied on a profilometer and scanning electron microscope. Changes in wetting properties and the characteristics of spreading were obtained. To implement wetting cycles, liquid was dispensed with a syringe pump using the bottom-up method. Findings: The results provide new, in-depth knowledge to understand the mechanisms of the contact line movement on laser-textured metal surfaces. We have shown that by creating a texture with given parameters (ordered or anisotropic), it is possible to predict a change in wettability from superhydrophilic to hydrophobic, as well as a droplet state. In this paper, we have demonstrated that the contact angle hysteresis determines not only the deviation of the contact angle from equilibrium, but also the adhesion force between the droplet and the surface, a droplet state (Wenzel or Cassie-Baxter), and the wetting anisotropy of local areas on laser-textured alloy. We have recorded two states of the droplet on formed textures: the Wenzel with air cushions on anisotropic and the Wenzel with complete filling of cavities with water on ordered textures.

Abstract:Determination of solid surface free energy is still an open problem. At present, there are two leading theories on how to determine the adhesion of droplets on rough substrates: one theory stresses that the droplet adhesion force lies in the areas of contact and interaction energy between liquid and solid molecules, whereas the other holds that the length of the edge of drops is essential. In this work, we unify the two theories through lattice Boltzmann simulations and demonstrate that the adhesion force could depend on either the contact area or the contact line, depending on the direction of the adhesion force measured, that is, by vertically separating the two materials or laterally sliding the droplet on the substrate. We reveal that for separating droplets away from rough substrates, the vertical adhesion (pull-off) force depends more significantly on the contact area rather than on the contact line. However, for sliding a droplet on substrates, the lateral adhesion force depends on the contact line while being independent of the contact area.

Abstract:Femtosecond laser irradiation is one of the most promising treatments to fabricate liquid repellent surfaces, attracting substantial scientific and industrial attention. So far, the focus has been on hierarchical interfacial structures at micro- and nanoscales, however, this has yet to be used in combination with macro-sized features. We present a strategy of femtosecond laser irradiation to create macro-micro-nano hierarchical surfaces for liquid droplet manipulation. These three-level hierarchical surfaces are shown to successfully split and gyrate impacting droplets. Our work is believed to be the first demonstration of femtosecond-laser-structured macro-micro-nano hierarchical surfaces to artificially design droplet impact, paving the way for aircraft anti-icing and energy harvesting.

Abstract:Flexible control of droplet transportation is crucial in various applications but constrained by liquid-solid friction. The development of biomimetic lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces provides a new solution to flexible manipulation of droplet transportation. Herein, a light strategy is reported for flexibly controlling droplet transportation on photosensitive lubricant-impregnated slippery surfaces. Owing to the localized heating effect of a focused laser beam via photothermal conversion, the resultant thermal Marangoni flow and horizontal component of the surface tension associated with the asymmetric wetting ridges are together responsible for actuating droplet transportation. It is found that the the asymmetry of the wetting ridge is dominated by the thickness of the infused oil layer, which directly affects the droplet transportation. The feasibility of this light strategy is also demonstrated by uphill movement, droplet coalescence, and fixed-point chemical reaction. This study provides a new design for potential applications in open droplet microfluidics, analytical chemistry, diagnosis, etc.

Abstract:Unidirectional droplet motion is realized on heated asymmetric microgroove arrays prepared by femtosecond laser direct writing. The plasma expansion under laser ablation compresses the two sides of the induced microgroove differently, resulting in the formation of asymmetrical microgrooves. The asymmetry of the microgrooves can rectify the water vapor that ejects from the Leidenfrost droplet and generate a viscous shear force at the bottom of the droplet, causing the droplet to move in a certain direction (where the laser scanning line is added) when the substrate temperature is higher than a certain critical value (the transition temperature of disordered motion and unidirectional motion). The velocity of droplets can exceed 318 mm/s, and the droplets can even climb surfaces that are tilted 14°. With the advantages of femtosecond lasers in the flexible design of surface microstructures and patterns, this unidirectional droplet motion can support a variety of complex droplet-manipulation applications, such as droplet movement along designed trajectories, droplet accelerator devices, fixed-point capture of droplets, and fixed-point cooling of hot solid surfaces. Compared with traditional macroscopic ratchets, laser-written asymmetrical microgrooves make the Leidenfrost droplet motion more designable and controllable.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the motion of the contact line is of critical importance for surface science studies as well as many industrial engineering applications. In this work, we elucidate the molecular origin of contact line stick-slip motion during the evaporation of liquid droplets on flexible nano-pillared surfaces using molecular dynamics simulations. We demonstrate that the evaporation-induced stick-slip motion of the contact line is a consequence of competition between pinning and depinning forces. Furthermore, the tangential force exerted by the pillared substrate on the contact line was observed to have a sawtooth-like oscillation. Our analysis also establishes that variations in the pinning force are accomplished through the self-adaptation of solid-liquid intermolecular distances, especially for liquid molecules sitting directly on top of the solid pillar. Consistent with our theoretical analysis, molecular dynamics simulations also show that the maximum pinning force is quantitatively related to both solid-liquid adhesion strength and liquid-vapor surface tension. These observations provide a fundamental understanding of contact line stick-slip motion on pillared substrates and also give insight into the microscopic interpretations of contact angle hysteresis, wetting transitions and dynamic spreading.

Abstract:Droplet transport on, and shedding from, surfaces is ubiquitous in nature and is a key phenomenon governing applications including biofluidics, self-cleaning, anti-icing, water harvesting, and electronics thermal management. Conventional methods to achieve spontaneous droplet shedding enabled by surface–droplet interactions suffer from low droplet transport velocities and energy conversion efficiencies. Here, by spatially confining the growing droplet and enabling relaxation via rationally designed grooves, we achieve single-droplet jumping of micrometer and millimeter droplets with dimensionless jumping velocities v* approaching 0.95, significantly higher than conventional passive approaches such as coalescence-induced droplet jumping (v* ≈ 0.2–0.3). The mechanisms governing single-droplet jumping are elucidated through the study of groove geometry and local pinning, providing guidelines for optimized surface design. We show that rational design of grooves enables flexible control of droplet-jumping velocity, direction, and size via tailoring of local pinning and Laplace pressure differences. We successfully exploit this previously unobserved mechanism as a means for rapid removal of droplets during steam condensation. Abstract:Microstructured surfaces that control the direction of liquid transport are not only ubiquitous in nature, but they are also central to technological processes such as fog/water harvesting, oil-water separation, and surface lubrication. However, a fundamental understanding of the initial wetting dynamics of liquids spreading on such surfaces is lacking. Here, we show that three regimes govern microstructured surface wetting on short time scales: spread, stick, and contact line leaping. The latter involves establishing a new contact line downstream of the wetting front as the liquid leaps over specific sections of the solid surface. Experimental and numerical investigations reveal how different regimes emerge in different flow directions during wetting of periodic asymmetrically microstructured surfaces. These insights improve our understanding of rapid wetting in droplet impact, splashing, and wetting of vibrating surfaces and may contribute to advances in designing structured surfaces for the mentioned applications.
Analysis of Water Droplet Motion on Hydrophobic Surfaces with Different Microstructures

Abstract:The influence of material surface microstructure on interface properties is crucial for the preparation and development of special functional materials. In this paper, polydimethylsiloxane-based superhydrophobic surfaces of varying roughness and surface energy are prepared using the template method and a spraying technique, and the effect of surface microstructure on lateral friction is studied using a lateral friction detection system. The experimental results indicate that as the surface roughness of a sample decreases, it is observed that the water droplets transition from a Cassie state to a Wenzel state. When the roughness changes from 4.619 mu m, reduce to 3.512 mu m, the maximum static friction force increases from 33.59 mu N increased to 51.52 mu N. The lateral sliding friction force ranges from 15.87 +/- 1.9 mu N increases to 40.91 +/- 1.2 mu N. For a given surface roughness, when the surface energy is reduced, the water droplets on the surface can be seen to transition from a Wenzel state to a Cassie state, the maximum static friction force increases from 19.32 mu N dropped to 9.23 mu N, and the lateral sliding friction force increases from 15.26 +/- 1.6 mu N dropped to 3.47 +/- 2.1 mu N. However, this behavior is distinct from that observed when changing the roughness of the sample. Studying the influence of the surface microstructure on the lateral friction force observed at a solid-liquid interface can provide important insights into novel geometries that may be used in new, advanced functional surfaces.

Abstract:Nanoparticle adhesion at liquid interfaces plays an important role in drug delivery, dust removal, the adsorption of aerosols, and controlled self-assembly. However, quantitative measurements of capillary interactions at the nanoscale are challenging, with most existing results at the micrometre to millimetre scale. Here, we combine atomic force microscopy (AFM) and computational simulations to investigate the adhesion and removal of nanoparticles from liquid interfaces as a function of the particles' geometry and wettability. Experimentally, AFM tips with controlled conical geometries are used to mimic the nano-asperities on natural nanoparticles interacting with silicone oil, a model liquid for many engineering applications including liquid-infused surfaces. Computationally, continuum modelling with the Surface Evolver software allows us to visualise the interface configuration and predict the expected force profile from energy minimisation. Quantitative agreement between the experimental measurements and the computational simulations validates the use of continuum thermodynamics concepts down to the nanoscale. We demonstrate that the adhesion of the nanoparticles is primarily controlled by surface tension, with minimum line tension contribution. The particle geometry is the main factor affecting the length of the capillary bridge before rupture. Both the particle geometry and liquid contact angle determine the shape of the adhesion force profile upon removal of the particle from the interface. We further extend our simulations to explore more complex geometries, rationalising the results from experiments with imperfect AFM tips. Our results could help towards the design of smart interfaces, for example, able to attract or repel specific particles based on their shape and chemistry.

Droplet impact on asymmetric hydrophobic microstructures

Abstract:Textured hydrophobic surfaces that repel liquid droplets unidirectionally are found in nature such as butterfly wings and ryegrass leaves and are also essential in technological processes such as self-cleaning and anti-icing. However, droplet impact on such surfaces is not fully understood. Here, we study, using a high-speed camera, droplet impact on surfaces with inclined micropillars. We observed directional rebound at high impact speeds on surfaces with dense arrays of pillars. We attribute this asymmetry to the difference in wetting behavior of the structure sidewalls, causing slower retraction of the contact line in the direction against the inclination compared to with the inclination. The experimental observations are complemented with numerical simulations to elucidate the detailed movement of the drops over the pillars. These insights improve our understanding of droplet impact on hydrophobic microstructures and may be a useful for designing structured surfaces for controlling droplet mobility.

Abstract:There is a huge interest in developing super-repellent surfaces for anti-fouling and heat transfer applications. To characterize the wetting properties of such surfaces, the most common approach is to place a millimetric-sized droplet and measure its contact angles. The adhesion and friction forces can then be indirectly inferred from the Furmidge's relation. While easy to implement, contact angle measurements are semi-quantitative and cannot resolve wetting variations on a surface. Here, we attach a micrometric-sized droplet to an Atomic Force Microscope cantilever to directly measure adhesion and friction forces with nanonewton force resolutions. We spatially map the micron-scale wetting properties of superhydrophobic surfaces and observe the time-resolved pinning-depinning dynamics as a droplet detaches from or moves across the surface.

Abstract:The precise rebound of a droplet upon hitting a solid surface has garnered significant attention in recent years due to its critical applications in self-cleaning, printing industries, and the design of heat exchanger surfaces, among others. This study introduces an innovative approach that combines femtosecond laser processing with a high-temperature stearic acid modification to create surfaces that feature superhydrophilic (SHL) stripes on a superhydrophobic substrate. By controlling the offset distance between the droplet's impact point and the SHL stripe, we achieved a directional and precise rebound of the droplets. Our findings indicate that the lateral displacement of the droplet increases with the offset distance and always tilts toward the direction of the SHL stripe. This study also incorporates numerical simulations to validate the findings, shedding light on the energy conversion mechanisms at the liquid–solid interface during the impact, particularly during the retraction phase. This discovery is significant for more accurately predicting the specific landing spots of rebounding droplets.

Abstract:Liquid transport is a fundamental process relevant to a wide range of applications, for example, heat transfer, anti-icing, self-cleaning, drag reduction, and microfluidic systems. For these applications, a deeper understanding of the sliding behavior of water droplets on solid surfaces is of particular importance. In this study, the frictional behavior of water droplets sliding on superhydrophobic surfaces decorated with micropillar arrays was studied using a nanotribometer. Our experiments show that surfaces with a higher solid area fraction generally exhibited larger friction, although friction might drop when the solid area fraction was close to unity. More interestingly, we found that the sliding friction of droplets was enhanced when the dimension of the microstructures increased, showing a distinct size effect. The nonmonotonic dependence of friction force on solid area fraction and the apparent size effect can be qualitatively explained by the evolution of two governing factors, that is, the true length of the contact line and the coordination degree of the depinning events. The mechanisms are expected to be generally applicable for other liquid transport processes involving the dynamic motion of a three-phase contact line, which may provide a new means of tuning liquid-transfer behavior through surface microstructures.
Time-Dependent Dynamic Behaviors of a Confined Liquid to Achieve Tailored Adhesion Force with Repeated Contacts Revealed by Atomic Force Microscopy

Abstract:The adhesion forces between two silica surfaces were measured by using an atomic force microscope with different experimental parameters in air to investigate the dynamic behavior of a confined liquid. Results show that the adhesion force is time-dependent and increases at first sharply and then slightly with dwell time until saturation is reached, with a long equilibrium time. This behavior is well explained by a dynamic meniscus model, in which a liquid bridge grows gradually because of liquid film flow with a large viscosity. Also, the large viscosity was attributed to the formation of orthosilicic acid and subsequent polymerization. With repeated contacts, the liquid bridge changes into two droplets on both surfaces after separation. The liquid in both forms can be controlled to flow into or out of the contact zone by the experimental parameters to achieve tailored adhesion forces. If the liquid of previous contact remains in the contact zone, the adhesion force increases with repeated contacts and then reaches saturation, which can also be explained by the model qualitatively. However, if the liquid droplets vanish before the next contact, the adhesion force usually decreases or remains unchanged. More liquid will be collected with larger contact times. Meanwhile, the droplets remaining on the surfaces get smaller until they vanish without a contact. Moreover, both piezo velocity and scan distance can be used to control the proportion of contact time. In addition, a viscous force should be considered with a large retraction velocity. The changing trend and magnitude of adhesion force depend on the experimental parameters and their coupling effects. The results may facilitate the anti-adhesion design of small-scale silicon-based systems.
