Abstract:To conduct extensive research on the application of ionic liquids as collectors in mineral flotation, ethanol (EtOH) was used as a solvent to dissolve hydrophobic ionic liquids (ILs) to simplify the reagent regime. Interesting phenomena were observed in which EtOH exerted different effects on the flotation efficiency of two ILs with similar structures. When EtOH was used to dissolve 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C 12 [mim]Cl) and as a collector for pure quartz flotation tests at a concentration of 1 × 10 −5 mol·L −1 , quartz recovery increased from 23.77% to 77.91% compared with ILs dissolved in water. However, quartz recovery of 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (C 12 [mim]PF 6 ) decreased from 60.45% to 24.52% under the same conditions. The conditional experiments under 1 × 10 −5 mol·L −1 ILs for EtOH concentration and under 2vol% EtOH for ILs concentration confirmed this difference. After being affected by EtOH, the mixed ore flotation tests of quartz and hematite showed a decrease in the hematite concentrate grade and recovery for the C 12 [mim]Cl collector, whereas the hematite concentrate grade and recovery for the C 12 [mim]PF 6 collector increased. On the basis of these differences and observations of flotation foam, two-phase bubble observation tests were carried out. The EtOH promoted the foam height of two ILs during aeration. It accelerated static froth defoaming after aeration stopped, and the foam of C 12 [mim]PF 6 defoaming especially quickly. In the discussion of flotation tests and foam observation, an attempt was made to explain the reasons and mechanisms behind the diverse phenomena using the dynamic surface tension effect and solvation effect results from EtOH. The solvation effect was verified through Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Zeta potential tests. Although EtOH affects the adsorption of ILs on the ore surface during flotation negatively, it holds an positive value of inhibiting foam merging during flotation aeration and accelerating the defoaming of static foam. And induce more robust secondary enrichment in the mixed ore flotation of the C 12 [mim]PF 6 collector, facilitating effective mixed ore separation even under inhibitor-free conditions.

Abstract:As one of the most important minerals for the extraction of lithium metal, spodumene and its associated mineral, albite, share similar physico-chemical properties, making their separation through flotation a challenging task. In this study, spodumene and albite were successfully separated by flotation using Fe(III)-modified silicate, and the fundamental mechanisms of this process were investigated. The results of single-minerals and artificially mixed ores flotation showed that Fe(III)-modified silicate exhibited a significantly greater inhibitory effect on albite than on spodumene, allowing for the efficient separation of these two minerals. The results of Zeta potential measurements, FTIR and XPS demonstrated that Fe(III)-modified silicate adsorbed on the surface of albite and inhibited the physical and chemical adsorption of NaOL at pH = 7, while exerting minimal impact on spodumene. Atomic force microscopy results indicated that the spodumene surface adsorbed a significant amount of NaOL even in the presence of Fe(III)-modified silicate and exhibited an increase in surface height and roughness. However, albite surface height and roughness after interacting with both Fe(III)-modified silicate and NaOL were similar to those observed when interacting with Fe(III)-modified silicate alone. Finally, density functional theory calculations revealed that Fe(III)-modified silicate had a stronger adsorption strength on the surface of albite than spodumene. Consequently, the conclusions of this study could provide guidance and reference for the creation of inhibitors for the selective flotation of spodumene and albite.

Abstract:The surface properties and flotation behaviour of aluminosilicates including kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite, using N-(3-aminopropyl)-dodecanamide as a collector, have been investigated. The best recoveries of kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite were respectively 91.5%, 90.6%, and 96.3%. On the basis of FT-IR spectra and zeta potential, the ionization of surface hydroxyl, as well as isomorphic exchange of surface ions, accounts for the mineral surface charges. The mechanisms of interactions of the mineral surface with collectors depend on the pH of the pulp. In the acidic region, the interactions of the mineral surfaces with the collector were mainly electrostatic, but in the alkaline region, the interactions are mainly due to hydrogen bonding. It can be seen from SEM photographs of aluminosilicates that pyrophyllite takes the shape of thin slices, but kaolinite and illite have irregular porous structures. Specific surface area and particle size distributions of aluminosilicates also indicate that kaolinite and illite are relatively large porous particles with larger external as well as internal surface areas.
Efficient Flotation Separation of Ilmenite and Olivine in a Weak Alkaline Pulp Using a Ternary Combination Collector Centered around Al3+

Abstract:Due to the similar physical and chemical properties of ilmenite and olivine, separating them is challenging. The flotation process, with the use of collectors, is an effective method. In this study, a ternary collector consisting of aluminum ion (III), benzohydroxamic acid (BHA), and sodium oleate (NaOL) was prepared for the flotation separation of ilmenite and olivine. Through micro-flotation experiments, molecular dynamics simulation (MD), density functional theory (DFT), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) analysis, the synergistic effect between the components of the ternary collector and the adsorption configuration on the surface of ilmenite was investigated. The results revealed that at pH = 8, Al (III), BHA, and NaOL could coordinate and adsorb effectively on the surface of ilmenite, enhancing its floatability for separation from olivine. The adsorption configuration differed from previous reports, showing a co-adsorption of multiple forms on the surface of ilmenite.

Abstract:A combination of state-of-the art in situ one- and two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been employed for the first time to investigate the role of amines in the synthesis of aluminophosphate molecular sieves in ionic liquids (ILs). In situ rotating-frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY) was used to demonstrate that the hybrid of imidazolium ionic liquids with organic amines, such as morpholine, connected through a hydrogen bond can be formed in the gel during the crystallization of molecular sieves. By combining the characterizations of the final solid products obtained by using XRD analyses, solid-state NMR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and DFT calculation results, it was verified that the hybrid between morpholine and the imidazolium cation in the initial preparation stage can act as the structure-directing agent (SDA) for the synthesis of AFI-structured aluminophosphate molecular sieves. Our findings may suggest a synthesis mechanism of molecular sieves in ionic liquids in which the IL-organic amine hybrid is required in the nucleation step, whereas the crystal growth occurs through the occlusion of ionic liquids in the zeolite channels.

Abstract:A novel series of ionic liquids containing cationic silver complexes have been synthesized via a new methodology. The essence of this methodology is to form the cations of ionic liquids through the complexation reaction of neutral organic ligands with silver ion, followed by the metathesis reaction of the resulting salts with a hydrophobic anion donor (e.g., N-lithiotrifluoromethanesulfonimide). Olefin, amide, and amine compounds have been demonstrated to be effective neutral organic ligands to use in forming these silver-based ionic liquids. These novel ionic liquids, in which silver ion is an integrated component of the corresponding cations, give rise to the efficient transport of olefins through (a) the fast molecular diffusion of the silver-olefin complexes and (b) the hopping motion of the olefin ligands among neighboring cationic silver sites. This dual-transport mechanism entails the olefin-tran sport modes of both liquid and polymer membranes, leading to significantly improved transport efficiencies and energy savings for separation of olefins from paraffins via silver complexation.

Abstract:With the explosive growth of demand for lithium, low-grade spodumene tailings could be concerned as alternative resources to realize the supplying. In this paper, a batch flotation experiment was adopted and optimized using sodium oleate (NaOL) and dodecylamine (DDA) as mixed collector by the reverse flotation desilication for recovery of lithium and rubidium from low-grade spodumene tailings. A favorable indicator of Li 2 O grade of 5.10% with recovery of 62.99%, and Rb 2 O grade of 2.09% with recovery of 50.80% for the flotation concentrate was obtained. The difference in contact angle results between flotation concentrate (13.92°) and tailings (47.96°) proves that the mixed collector could efficiently separate quartz and spodumene. The zeta potential measurement and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra reveal that the optimal mixed collector could improve the hydrophobicity of quartz via charge neutralization and act on the mineral surface mainly through physical adsorption. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that Al atom as the active site in the optimized spodumene (1 1 0) surface could adsorb water molecules, forming a hydration layer that inhibits spodumene from adhering to bubbles. Mulliken's charge population analysis confirm that NaOL + DDA could enhance the flotation efficiency of quartz by increasing the polarity of functional groups.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are finding applications in various domains of physical sciences these days. They are used in organometallic syntheses, catalysis, electrochemistry, fuel, solar cells, lubricants, enzyme, separation technologies, nanomaterials, tissue preservation etc. However, the application of ILs in the area of mineral processing is minimal. Considering the potential use of ILs in metal extraction and many chemical reactions, these compounds may play an essential role in the selective recovery of mineral values from the ores having multiple mineral phases. In this paper, the application of some selected ILs in the mineral flotation studies has been reviewed. The interaction of ILs with the desired mineral phases has been described vide the evidence from zeta potential, X-Ray Diffraction, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectra as well as molecular modeling studies. The results of the studies carried out on low-grade iron ores have indicated that ILs under investigation can be compared with the conventional iron ore collectors such as dodecylamine.

Abstract:The engineered artificial mineral (EnAM) lithium aluminate (LiAlO2) is a promising candidate for the recycling of lithium from slags, which can originate from the reprocessing of batteries, for example. Derivatives of the natural product Punicine (1-(2′,5′-dihydroxyphenyl)-pyridinium) from Punica granatum have been proven to be effective switchable collectors for the flotation of this mineral as they react to light. In the present study, three Punicines were added to a planetary ball mill before grinding LiAlO2 to particle sizes suitable for flotation. We investigated the influence of Punicine and two derivatives with C10 and C17 side chains on the grinding results at different grinding times and conditions as well as on the yields in flotations. SEM images of the particles, IR and ICP–OES measurements provided insights into the Punicine–particle interactions. They showed that Punicines not only prevent the formation of hydrophilic and thus undesirable lithium aluminate hydroxide hydrate (LiAl2(OH)7 ▪ x H2O) surfaces in this process, as is unavoidable in aqueous flotation without this pretreatment, they also prevent the undesired release of lithium cations into the aqueous phase. Due to considerable hydrophobization of the particle surface of LiAlO2, nearly quantitative recovery rates of this engineered artificial mineral are achieved using the process described here.

Investigating the influence of particle size and shape on froth flotation based benefication of lithium-rich minerals in slags

Abstract:The demand for lithium, as well as other critical resources, needed for electrochemical energy storage is expected to grow significantly in the future. Slags obtained from pyrometallurgical recycling represent a promising resource of valuable materials, among them lithium and rare earth elements found in artificial minerals particulate phases. This study investigates the flotation separation of engineered artificial minerals (EnAMs) in slags, such as lithium aluminate and gehlenite as valuable and gangue phases, respectively. Flotation experiments are carried out in a Partridge-Smith cell using oleic acid (OA) as a benchmark surfactant. Particle characterization is performed using SEM-based Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA), which provides particle discrete information. From this information, bivariate Tromp functions based on non-parametric kernel density estimation are computed to characterize the separation behavior with respect to particle descriptors. This approach enables investigating the influence of particle size and shape on separation behavior of EnAMs. Furthermore, these results allow for the optimization of flotation experiments for enriching Li-bearing EnAMs.

Abstract:Derivatives of the natural product punicine [1-(2′,5′-dihydroxyphenyl)pyridinium chloride] were developed as switchable collectors for the flotation of lithium-containing engineered artifical minerals (EnAMs). These EnAMs are e.g. formed by pyrometallurgical processing of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. Depending on the pH value and the lighting conditions, punicines exist in water as cations, two different electrostatically neutral mesomeric betaines, anionic tripoles, radical cations or radical anions. The radical species form by photochemically induced disproportionation reactions. We prepared punicine derivatives introducing alkyl chains in the pyridinium moiety (4-methyl, 4-ethyl, 4-octyl and 4-undecanyl) to install hydrophobic groups and examined the recovery rates of the flotation of lithium aluminate (LiAlO 2 ). We varied the lighting conditions (darkness, daylight, LED irradiation at λ = 390–400 nm) and the pH value, the collector's and frother's concentration, and the flotation time. With our collectors, recovery rates of lithium aluminate up to 90% were accomplished when the flotation was conducted in Hallimond tubes exposed to daylight at pH 11 in water.

Abstract:Hormonal ablation is the standard of treatment for advanced androgen‐dependent prostate cancer. Although tumor regression is usually achieved at first, the cancer inevitably evolves toward androgen‐independence, in part because of the development of mechanisms of resistance and in part because at the tissue level androgen withdrawal is not fully attained. Current research efforts are focused on new therapeutic strategies that will increase the effectiveness of androgen withdrawal and delay recurrence. We used a syngeneic pseudo‐orthotropic mouse model of prostate cancer to test the efficacy of combining androgen withdrawal with FDA‐approved COX‐2 inhibitor celecoxib.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as promising extractants to broaden the potential utility of liquid liquid extraction process for lithium, but developing an attractive IL from numerous available ILs remains challenging. In this work, a rapid preliminary predicting and screening method based on COSMO-RS was proposed. The design strategy was to collocate anions that had intensive affinity to lithium ion with high hydrophobic cations. Based on it, a series of candidate ILs were prepared and characterized by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy, including [P-4444]-based and [N-4444]-based ILs with phosphate, phosphinate and long-chain carboxylate anions. The further extraction experiments indicated that the tetrabutylammonium mono-2-ethylhexyl(2-ethylhexyl)phosphate ([N-44444][EHPMEH]) had the highest Li+ extraction efficiency. The extraction mechanism was investigated by slope analysis method and ATR-IR spectroscopy. It was determined that every Li+ associated with 1.33 molecule [N-4444][EHPMEH] to form the extracted species. The stripping study showed that the Li+ was able to be stripped by only 0.5 mol/L HCl Without additional agents. The extraction experiments of Li+ from multi-metal-ion solution were also carried out, and the distribution ratio of Li+ was nearly twice those of Na+, K+, and Rb+, indicating that [N-4444][EHPMEH] was available to separate lithium ion from the other alkali metal ions. Photo‐switchable Collectors for the Flotation of Lithium Aluminate for the Recycling of the Critical Raw Material Lithium

Abstract:Flotation of the mineral lithium aluminate by application of the natural product punicine and some derivatives as collectors is examined. Punicines, 1‐(2 ́,5 ́‐dihydroxyphenyl)‐pyridinium compounds, are switchable molecules whose properties can be changed reversibly. They exist as cations, neutral mesomeric betaines, anions, and dianions depending on the pH. In light, they form radicals. Five punicine derivatives were prepared which possess β‐methyl, β‐chlorine, γ‐tert.‐butyl, and γ‐acetyl groups attached to the pyridinium ring, and a pyrogallol derivative. LiAlO2 reacts with water to give species such as LiAl2(OH)7 on its surface. Flotations were performed applying the punicines in daylight, in darkness and under UV‐irradiation (390 – 400 nm). The pH of the suspension, the collector ́s concentration, the conditioning time as well as the flotation time were varied. The recovery rates strongly depend on these parameters. For example, the recovery rate of lithium aluminate was increased by 116% on changing the lighting condition from daylight to darkness, when the pyrogallol derivative of punicine was applied. UV, FTIR, TGA and zeta potential measurements as well as DFT calculations were performed in order to gain insight into the chemistry of punicines on the surface of LiAlO2 and LiAl2(OH)7 in water which influence the flotation ́s results.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have received widespread attention in the field of green desulfurization in the past few years due to their excellent desulfurization ability and infinite potential for designability. However, the additional costs and environmental issues faced when dealing with ILs with degraded desulfurization performance have limited their practical applications. To solve the reuse problem of degraded ILs, this study analyzed the feasibility of using ILs as extraction desulfurizers and corrosion inhibitors in refineries using methods such as liquid chromatography, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, quantum chemistry, and molecular dynamics simulation. The results indicated that 1-hydroxyethyl-3-hexylimidazolium bromide gave a great thiophene desulfurization efficiency of 50.82% and an excellent corrosion inhibition efficiency of 98.29%. After undertaking desulfurization tasks, the IL could continue to act as an interface-type inhibitor to adsorb on the Q235 surfaces, hindering aqueous electrolyte attack and thus inhibiting the corrosion rate of refining equipment. Its adsorption obeyed the Langmuir isotherm. Improving the electron donating ability, side chain interaction, imidazolium ring, and thiophene interaction, as well as the adsorption of thiophene S atoms on long side chains of IL cations, while suppressing the interaction between the imidazolium ring and n-heptane and the adsorption of n-heptane on the long side chains, could further increase the corrosion inhibition and desulfurization performance of ILs. Using ILs as extraction desulfurizers and corrosion inhibitors is expected to solve environmental and safety issues in the refining process and reduce the adverse effects of high prices on the practical application of ILs.

Abstract:Selective extraction of Li + from high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio brines with ionic liquid (IL) based collaborative extractants was investigated by experiments, thermodynamic analyses, and quantum chemical (QC) calculations. Effects of different IL cationic structures and organophosphorus ligands on extraction performances were studied. The results demonstrated that the system 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide + trioctyl phosphate ([HOEMIM][Tf 2 N] + TOP) was considered as the best extractant, with the very high extraction efficiency of Li + (83.16 %) and separation selectivity of Li + /Mg 2+ (742.11), which is higher than values reported in literature. The thermodynamic model ePC-SAFT was first extended to quantitatively predict the phase equilibria of the so-called "organic–inorganic complex strong electrolyte system" presented in this work. The molecular-level extraction mechanism was explored by QC calculation, indicating that the strong multi-site intermolecular interactions between Li + and [HOEMIM][Tf 2 N] + TOP break the Li + hydration. This work provides guidance to rationally design novel IL-based extractants for efficient extraction of Li + .

Abstract:Aqueous-based Al-ion batteries are attractive alternatives to Li-ion batteries due to their safety, high volumetric energy density, abundance, and recyclability. Although aluminum-ion batteries are attractive, there are major challenges to overcome, which include understanding the nature of the passive layer of aluminum oxide on the aluminum anode, the narrow electrochemical window of aqueous electrolytes, and lack of suitable cathodes. Here, we report using experiments in conjunction with DFT simulations to clarify the role of ionic liquids (ILs) in altering the Al solvation dynamics, which in turn affects the aluminum electrochemistry and aqueous-based battery performance significantly. DFT calculations showed that the addition of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethylsulfonate (EMIMTfO) changes the aluminum solvation structure in the aqueous (Al(TfO)3) electrolyte to lower coordinated solvation shells, thereby influencing and improving Al deposition/stripping on the Zn/Al alloy anode. Furthermore, the addition of an IL reduces the strain in manganese oxide during intercalation/deintercalation, thereby improving the Zn/Al-MnOx battery performance. By optimizing the electrolyte composition, a battery potential of >1.7 V was achieved for the Zn/Al-MnOx system.

Abstract:This study first systematically investigated selective Li + extraction from Mg 2+ -rich brines with Na + and K + using ionic liquid (IL) based synergistic extractant (SE) systems from molecular mechanisms to extraction performances. The ternary combination 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([AMIM][Tf 2 N]), tri- iso -butyl phosphate (TIBP) and dichloromethane (DCM), i.e., [AMIM][Tf 2 N]-TIBP-DCM was selected as a suitable SE from the diverse organic phosphorus ligands, ILs and diluents. The single-stage Li + extraction efficiency was as high as 96.87 %, and selectivities of β Li + /Mg 2+ , β Li + /Na + , and β Li + /K + were up to 1161.94, 76.74, and 1263.46, respectively. It was found that Li + is extracted from the aqueous phase to organic phase in Li + -4TIBP-[Tf 2 N] complex. The molecular-level mechanism was identified as the multi-type interaction formed between metal ions and [AMIM][Tf 2 N]-TIBP to destroy the hydration of metal ions through quantum chemical (QC) calculations. The work proposes valuable theoretical guidance to develop novel IL-related SE systems for the high-efficiency Li + extraction from salt lake brines.

Abstract:Electrolyte chemistry offers the opportunity to regulate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and Li+ solvation, which is considered to be crucial to the growth of lithium crystals for safe lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Structurally tunable characteristics of ionic liquids (ILs) from anion type, cationic substituent chain length and cationic substituents, will contribute this field. Here, we explore the influence mechanism of imidazole-based ILs as electrolyte additives on Li+ solvation and the formation of SEI. ILs can participate into the formation of efficient SEI, together with cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI). Moreover, ILs can also regulate the sheath structure of Li+ solvation, to fasten the kinetics of Li. Furthermore, the imidazole-based cations with long alkyl chain can form an electrostatic shield around newly formed Li nucleus, and suppress further Li plating at this site. Under the optimized condition, the 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([OMIm]TFSI) additive shows the best ability to enhance the electrochemical performance, endowing the Li||Li symmetric cell with a stable life (over 800 h) at 0.5 mA cm-2 and the Li||LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) full cell with a high capacity of 141.7 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 0.5 C.
