Abstract:Mastering of heterojunctions between MgAlTi LDHs and graphitic carbon nitride is a valuable tool to promote an efficient degradation of gaseous nitrogen oxides under visible light illumination. Atmospheric pollution has been recognized as a primary global emergency, especially in large cities and industrial areas. Among the most common harmful pollutants, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are responsible for a plethora of adverse effects, and their effective elimination from air has become an imperative task. In this regard, photocatalysis stands as an attractive technology for NOx degradation, provided that low‐cost and efficient visible ‐light photocatalysts are developed. In this regard, the construction of heterojunctions between energy band‐matched semiconductors is an effective strategy to boost the ultimate material photoactivity. In the present study, green heterocomposites based on MgAlTi layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) are prepared using an amenable and cost‐effective route. A proper modulation of the system characteristics, as demonstrated by a comprehensive investigation, enabled to obtain very attractive DeNOx performances thanks to the efficient construction of MgAlTi/gCN heterojunctions with tailored features. The formation of the target heterocomposites significantly enhances the visible light photoactivity of the pristine LDH, boosting nitrogen monoxide transformation to nitrites/nitrates with a remarkable recycling stability. Overall, the presently reported results open the door to a profitable system exploitation for air purification under real‐world conditions, with considerable impact on both human wellbeing and environmental protection.

Abstract:Developing visible light responsive photocatalysts with strong light capture ability for catalytic NO removal is of great significance. In this work, we coupled the narrow-gap semiconductor BiOI with graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) to construct 2D/3D heterostructure and applied it for efficient photocatalytic elimination of NO under visible light irradiation. At relative humidity (RH) of 15 %, g-C3N4/BiOI achieves remarkable NO removal activity (80.5 %) under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 1,740,000 mL h−1 g−1. Outstanding durability was realized that the NO removal efficiency of g-C3N4/BiOI after 6 consecutive runs. Even at high RH of 50 % and 80 %, g-C3N4/BiOI still exhibited excellent NO removal performances of 80.3 % and 78.5 %, respectively. The heterostructure of g-C3N4/BiOI endowed the enhanced light harvesting, efficient charge separation and rapid charge transfer, which enables sufficient superoxide radicals (O2 −) production to improve the efficiency and strengthen the durability of photocatalytic NO removal. This work provides insights into the rational design of heterostructure photocatalyst toward air purification.

Abstract:Control of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) byproducts is of great importance for the photocatalytic NO removal and environmental remedy. However, individual semiconductor photocatalysts generally show limited capabilities for selective NO removal due to severe charge recombination and inadequate redox potentials. Herein, the cotton-like g-C3N4 was modified with Ti3C2@TiO2 to construct a heterojunction photocatalyst Ti3C2@TiO2/g-C3N4, which showed outperformed photocatalytic NO removal and MB degradation abilities compared to the individual photocatalysts under visible light irradiation. The UV–vis absorption spectra and photoluminescence (PL) spectra confirmed that Ti3C2@TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalyst was endowed with superior light utilization and separation/transfer ability of charge carriers due to the presence of n-n heterojunction and Schottky barrier. Furthermore, the g-C3N4, Ti3C2, and TiO2 were closely contacted showing a high specific surface area, which promoted the charge transfer and the exposure of more active sites, further inducing the formation of more active species. Therefore, the designed photocatalyst delivered a high removal rate of NO and a suppressed discharge of NO2. Notably, the photocatalyst Ti3C2@TiO2/g-C3N4 also presented superior NO removal ability during the cycling experiment, indicating their outstanding stability and recyclability. Besides, the effects of active species were monitored using a trapping experiment to propose probable photocatalytic mechanism. This study could shed a new light to the design of photocatalyst for air purification in the future.

Abstract:NiCoP/g-C3N4 Schottky heterojunctions were created by a two-step synthesis for enhanced NO oxidation. NiCo-layered double hydroxides (LDH) were grown on superior thin graphic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets by a controlling chemical co-precipitation method. A phosphating process at 300 °C resulted in the transformation in situ of NiCo-LDH into NiCoP composite nanoparticles to create Schottky heterojunctions. Using optimized conditions, heterojunction sample 15-NiCoP/CN revealed excellent photocatalytic NO oxidation with a removal rate of 78%. Photogenerated electrons were efficiently separated and transferred because of Schottky barrier, interfacial charge transport channel, and enhanced light absorption efficiency. Photogenerated electrons reacted with adsorbed O2 to generate superoxide radicals (·O2 ̄) as crucial active species of NO oxidation. The test indicated that the concentration of·O2 ̄ for sample 15-NiCoP/CN reached 7.1 × 10−5 M which was 6.5 times higher than that of g-C3N4 after light irradiation. In addition, low NO2 generation and mineralization rate (92%) suggested that NO was converted into NO3- or NO2- rather than NO2 to mitigate secondary pollution. This result supplied a novel approach to explore the application of transition metal phosphides and g-C3N4 in photocatalytic NO oxidation.

Abstract:Visible light-driven photocatalysis for the degradation of nitric oxide (NO) has attracted considerable attention. Graphene quantum dots/graphite phase carbon nitride (GQDs/CN) heterojunctions were proposed as efficient visible-light responsive photocatalysts for NO treatment under the guidance of density function theory (DFT) simulation. Then, the GQDs/CN was synthesized via hydrothermal combination of GQDs and g-C3N4 (CN) produced from pyrolysis of citric acid (CA) and melamine, respectively. Afterwards, the GQDs/CN composite samples were characterized using XRD, XPS, FE-SEM, TEM, HR-TEM, BET, UV–Vis DRS, PL, photocurrent tests, and EIS. Later, the photocatalytic activity of the prepared GQDs/CN composites was evaluated by degrading NO at ppm level under visible light irradiation at conditions of 20 ppm of NO, 5% of O2, and 50% of relative humidity. Results show that 9GQDs/CN outperforms its counterparts. Compared to CN, the 9GQDs/CN increases the NO conversion rate from 61% to 90%, the selectivity of nitrate formation from 53% to 74%, and the value of DeNO x index from −0.25 to 0.19. The enhanced performance results from the inclusion of GQDs, which increases the specific surface area, promotes the absorption of light, boosts the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and inhibits their recombination. Furthermore, we used active species detection experiment, IC, in-situ DRIFTS, ESR measurement, XPS VB, Mott-Schottky, and DFT calculations to systematically explore the mechanism behind the degradation of NO using GQDs/CN, and confirmed the formation of Type-Ⅱ heterojunction between GQDs and g-C3N4. In addition, 9GQDs/CN maintains a high NO conversion rate after 5 cycles of experiments, indicating its potential in industrial applications.

Abstract:As for photocatalytic oxidation of nitric oxide (NO), the low NO oxidation activity and generation of by-products (cf. NO2) are the urgent challenge. To tackle these issues, a simple in-situ growing stragegy was employed to constructe Ti3C2/g-C3N4 system. The fabricated Ti3C2/g-C3N4 composite (TC-CN) presented enhanced photocatalytic NO removal efficiency and inhibited toxic NO2 generation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental characterizations were combined to demonstrate the presence of strong interface effect between Ti3C2 and g-C3N4, which could greatly improve photo-generated charge carrier separation via the construction of electron transfer channels, and further activate oxygen molecules adsorbed on the side of Ti3C2 layer. As a result, nitrite and nitrate instead of NO2 were the final products during the photocatalytic reaction process through the monitoring by in situ diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS).

Abstract:NOx photocatalytic oxidation is a promising approach for practical NOx abatement at sub-ppb levels and under ambient conditions. However, conventional photocatalysts are characterized by their low NOx adsorption capacity and activity under visible light. This results in poor NO (g) conversion and may form more toxic NO2 (g), hampering the utilization of photocatalysis in NOx removal. Herein, we employed a hierarchical macro-mesoporous structure composed of Z-scheme TiO2-g-C3N4 hybrid embedded in parallel TiO2 channels as a high adsorption capacity and low band gap photocatalyst for NOx oxidation. This unique structure provides aligned macroporous channels and mesoporous walls for efficient NOx adsorption and storage of NOx oxidation product (i.e., NO 3 - (s)) while enabling visible light absorption. NOx oxidation was conducted in a laminar-flow reactor under 50% relative humidity and simultaneous exposure to blue and green lights (cyan light). TiO2-g-C3N4 showed NO conversion (37%) which is four times higher than that of TiO2 (7%) and two times higher than that of g-C3N4 (17%). In addition, TiO2-g-C3N4 hybrids showed high NOx adsorption capacity and converted NO to nontoxic NO 3 - with minimal formation of NO2, evident by its positive DeNOx index (+74 ppm) in contrast to g-C3N4 with a negative DeNOx (-4 ppm) and TiO2 with a slightly positive DeNOx index (+15 ppm). The study demonstrates the delicate relationship between H2O adsorption on the hybrid structure and NOx photooxidation reaction and provides detailed mechanistic insights on the photocatalytic response. It is expected that the results of this study will benefit ongoing efforts to design visible-light active photocatalysts.

Abstract:Metal-free g-C3N4 is a promising candidate for the next-generation visible light-responsive photocatalyst; however, high recombination probability of the photogenerated charge carriers on g-C3N4 limits its photocatalytic activity. To further increase the intrinsic photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4, here, perylene tetracarboxylic diimide-g-C3N4 (PDI/GCN) heterojunctions are prepared by one-step imidization reaction between perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and g-C3N4 in aqueous solution. By the combination of various testing results, it is confirmed that the surface hybridization of PTCDA and g-C3N4 in the PDI/GCN heterojunctions via O=C-N-C=O covalent bonds occurs at lower PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage. By selecting p-nitrophenol (PNP) and levofloxacin (LEV) as the target organic pollutants, the visible-light photocatalytic performance of the PDI/GCN heterojunctions is studied. It shows that the PDI/GCN heterojunction prepared at a PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage of 1% exhibits remarkably higher visible-light photocatalytic degradation and mineralization ability toward aqueous target pollutants as compared with g-C3N4 and Degussa P25 TiO2. On the basis of the experimental results including photoelectrochemistry, indirect chemical probe, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, it is verified that the surface hybridization in the heterojunctions is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity via accelerating the migration and separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, causing to produce more active species like O-center dot(2)-, h(vB)(+), and (OH)-O-center dot for deep oxidation of PNP or LEV to CO2 and inorganic anions.
Bifunctional Photocatalysis Toward Efficient NOx Removal Performance and Water Splitting Activity: A Case of TiO2/g-C3N4

Abstract:Studies about emissions reduction and treatment, and renewable energy generation are sustainable development goals of the United Nations. Therein, photocatalysts have emerged as highly attractive multifunctional materials due to their versatile applications in environmental remediation and energy production. In this study, a bifunctional photocatalyst, TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 , was synthesized for the purpose of NO x removal and water splitting. Various weight ratios of commercially available TiO 2 were combined with g-C 3 N 4 synthesized through a pyrolysis method. The findings demonstrate that the 10%-TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 composite exhibited a notably high NO removal rate of 48.34% and minimal NO 2 yield compared to pure g-C 3 N 4 . The incorporation of TiO 2 onto g-C 3 N 4 induced bandgap restructuring, resulting in a significant enhancement in photocurrent density, with a maximum increase of 25 μA cm −2 at 1.23 V. Moreover, the combination of g-C 3 N 4 with 10% TiO 2 exhibited promising electrocatalytic potential for the oxygen evolution reaction, as indicated by an overpotential of 0.44 V. Overall, the utilization of bifunctional photocatalysis with TiO 2 /g-C 3 N 4 holds great promise as an effective approach for both NO x removal and water splitting applications. This combination offers potential solutions for addressing environmental challenges and advancing renewable energy technologies.

Abstract:It is important to seek effective strategies to fabricate nanomaterials with multi-functionalities in noxious gas detection and poisonous waste treatment. Herein, Ag nanoparticles and g-C3N4 nanosheets co-modified ZnO heterostructure was synthesized via a one-step polymer-network gel method, which is used as both photocatalyst and sensing material. Being a visible-light-driven photocatalyst, the ternary ZnO/Ag/g-C3N4 composite produced 100 % Rhodamine B degradation within 30 min with good cycling stability. Besides, the gas sensor based on ZnO/Ag/g-C3N4 exhibited superb room-temperature sensing performance under neutral light excitation, with a response value of 15.3–5 ppm NO2 and a lower detection limitation. The excellent performance was mainly attributed to the significantly enhanced visible-light absorption as well as effectively suppressed charge recombination because of the synergism between the individual components. Moreover, the formation of g-C3N4 nanosheets during thermal oxidation etching plays a critical role in improving the surface area and enriching the surface oxygen vacancies. Thus, this work provides novel insights for the synthesis and multi-applications of ZnO/Ag/g-C3N4 heterostructure with high performance.

Abstract:This work explored an effective treatment method for removing NO from simulated flue gas at normal temperature. We synthesized accordion-like MXene-derived TiO2@C coupled with g-C3N4 (TiO2@C/g-C3N4) via one-step calcination utilizing Ti3AlC2, fluoride salts and melamine as raw materials in CO2 atmosphere. One-step calcination process simultaneously achieved the etch of Al layers of Ti3AlC2 by molten fluoride salts, the generation of g-C3N4 with melamine as precursor and the oxidation of Ti3C2 by CO2. TiO2@C/g-C3N4 for photocatalytic activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) had as high as 94.0% removal rate of NO at parts per million level in a normal temperature environment. This efficiency was 5.3 times and 8.0 times that of TiO2@C/g-C3N4 and H2O2 individually, due to the synergy between photocatalysis and H2O2 oxidation. Meantime, TiO2@C/g-C3N4 exhibited an enhanced performance compared with g-C3N4 (40.3%) and TiO2@C (64.1%) for Z-type heterojunction accelerating the separation of electron-hole pairs. The mechanism was proposed that Z-type TiO2@C/g-C3N4 heterojunction activated H2O2 under visible light to generate hydroxyl radical and superoxide radical for oxidation of NO.

Abstract:We demonstrated the partial Ni2+ substitution for Mg2+ in Mg2Al-layered double hydroxide nanosheet (Ni/LDH) significantly improved its photocatalytic performance in removing the ppb-level NO pollutant from air. With 25% of Mg2+ substituted, the Ni/LDH delivered the highest NO removal efficiency of 42.10% (87.2% of them were mineralized to nitrate) under UV-light irradiation. Such a robust performance with the low energy input (8 W) made Ni/LDH among the top photocatalysts for NO removal. We evidenced the OH- carried by Ni/LDH transformed to ·OH radicals by trapping the photoexcited holes. This unique feature was intriguing as the OH- at layer surfaces of LDH were abundant, fully exposed and dynamically supplemented by atmospheric water, which endowed Ni/LDH with superior ·OH production capability even under low atmospheric moistures. The positive contribution of Ni2+ arose from its function in optimizing band structure and activating the OH- of LDH, leading to enhanced reactive oxidative species production.

Abstract:An appealing strategy for air pollution treatment is the conversion of NOx in flue gas to valuable chemicals in ambient conditions. The electrocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide has been demonstrated to be a very effective process, however, the photocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide hasn't received much research attention. Herein, we developed a novel 0D/3D g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x catalyst, and investigated its performances in both electro- and photocatalytic reduction of nitric oxide to ammonia through experimental analysis and theoretical computation. In the electrocatalytic reduction of NO, the NH3 yield of g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x is up to 3841.5 μg h−1 mg−1, which is 15.15, 3.14, and 1.15 times that of TiO2 (P25), 3DOMM-TiO2 and g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2, respectively. The best reaction pathway is *NO → *HNO → *HNOH → *NH→ *NH2 → *NH3 → *NH4 +, and the potential determining step is *NH → *NH2. Furthermore, the NH3 yield is estimated to be 95.07 μg h−1 mg−1 in the photocatalytic reduction of NO, using g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x as single photoelectrode. The NO molecules are reduced to NH3 on the CB of the g-C3N4 QDs by the accumulated photoelectrons, and charge migration occurs according to the S-scheme in the g-C3N4 QDs/3DOMM-TiO2-x photocatalyst. The results pave a new route for producing ammonia from NO under ambient conditions using electricity and solar energy.

Abstract:In this work, we report a one-step synthesis of ternary Z-scheme Co(OH)2/CeO2-g-C3N4 (CoCe-CN) heterostructure via hydrothermal method. Owing to the modification of Co(OH)2 and CeO2, the existence of Co(OH)2 as an electron acceptor-donor center between CeO2 and g-C3N4 accelerates the electron transfer and provides extra OH- reaction pathway for photocatalytic oxidation of NO. As a result, 50CoCe-CN (Co and Ce accounting for 25% mass ratio separately) achieved a 53.5% conversion efficiency of NO at 600 ppb concentration, which is 1.82 times that of g-C3N4 under visible light. The results of the DFT analysis and element distribution of cobalt and ceria provide convincing evidence supporting the existence of a novel multi-layer structure in the CoCe-CN photocatalyst. This structure involves the loading of CeO2 and Co(OH)2 on the g-C3N4 surface, and Co(OH)2 as a co-catalyst introduced between CeO2 and g-C3N4 realizes the synergy between CeO2 and Co(OH)2 which further improve the photocatalytic properties. The higher photocatalytic efficiencies observed in the CoCe-CN photocatalysts compared to those containing only cobalt (Co-CN) or ceria (Ce-CN) provide further evidence of the synergistic effect of these two elements. This work demonstrates a more efficient and effective ternary photocatalytic system, with greater practical potential for photocatalytic oxidation of NO.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is an intriguing metal-free photocatalyst for pollution control. This research represents an efficient visible light photocatalytic removal of gaseous NO at 600 ppb level with porous g-C3N4 nanostructures synthesized by pyrolysis of thiourea. TG-DSC was employed to simulate the pyrolysis of thiourea, and the mechanistic formation process of g-C3N4 was revealed. The crystallinity, morphology, surface area, pore structures, band structure, and photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 can be engineered by variation of pyrolysis temperature and time. A layer-by-layer coupled with layer-splitting process was proposed for the gradual reduction of layer thickness and size of g-C3N4 obtained at elevated temperature and prolonged time. The visible light photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 nanosheets toward NO purification was significantly enhanced due to the enhanced crystallinity, nanosheet structure, large surface areas and pore volume and enlarged band gap as the pyrolysis temperature was increased and the pyrolysis time was prolonged. The optimized g-C3N4 nanosheets (CN-600 degrees C and CN-240 min) exhibited higher photocatalytic activity of 32.7% and 32.3% than C-doped TiO2 (21.8%) and BiOI (14.9%), which are also highly stable and can be used repeatedly without obvious deactivation under repeated irradiation, demonstrating their great potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is regarded as one of the most promising methods for removing low concentrations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) discharged from mobile sources, but its low activity and secondary contamination with harmful by-products restrict its practical implementation. Herein, we introduced single Zn atoms into the interlayer of g-C3N4 prepared through a simple pyrolysis method with an ultrahigh loading amount of 37.0 wt% (10.2 at%). Zn-N3 bridging structure is created by single atomic scattered Zn atoms connecting with three N atoms of two layers of g-C3N4, which enhance visible light absorption and electron-hole pairs’ separation. The introduced single Zn atom induced the adsorbed O2 and NO to fabricate the Zn-O2-NO structure, which facilitated the dissociation of O2 and the direct formation of nitrate from NO, tuning NO oxidation pathway and resulting in increased NO oxidization (49 %) but low toxic NO2 generation (2.6 %). This current work introduces a novel approach to fabricating single-atom catalysts for highly effective environmental remediation and secondary pollution control.

Abstract:An appealing strategy in the direction of circular chemistry and sustainable nitrogen exploitation is to efficiently convert NOx pollutants into low-toxic products and simultaneously provide crop plants with metabolic nitrogen. This study demonstrates that such a scenario can be realized by a defect- and morphology-coengineered Ni-Fe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) comprising ultrathin nanosheets. Rich oxygen vacancies are introduced onto the NiFe-LDH surface, which facilitate charge carrier transfer and enable photocatalytic O2 activation into superoxide radicals (•O2-) under visible light. •O2- on NiFe-LDH thermodynamically oxidizes NO into nitrate with selectivity over 92%, thus suppressing dangerous NO2 emissions. By merit of abundant mesopores on NiFe-LDH ultrathin nanosheets bearing a high surface area (103.08 m2/g), nitrate can be readily stored without compromising the NO oxidation reactivity or selectivity for long-term usage. The nitrate species can be easily washed off the NiFe-LDH surface and then enriched in the liquid form as easy-to-use chemicals.

Abstract:In this work, lignite was used to prepare value-added graphene quantum dots (L-GQDs) via the chemical oxidation process. The prepared L-GQDs were then hybridized with bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) to form composite photocatalysts by a semi-solvothermal method. The composites catalytically degraded NO under visible-light irradiation. Multiple characterizations demonstrated that L-GQDs were successfully deposited onto BiOBr without changing the valence states of the elements in BiOBr. The addition of L-GQDs not only boosted the NO removal efficiency from 48.44% to 80.17%, but also significantly improved the environmental friendliness of the catalyst. Experimental investigations and theoretical calculations confirmed the formation of a type II heterojunction between L-GQDs and BiOBr. Such a heterojunction facilitated the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the prepared composite catalyst demonstrated good stability, maintaining 94.40% of its original photocatalytic activity after five cycles. The synthesis and environmentally conscious application of the value-added L-GQDs in this work provides a cleaner alternative for utilizing low-rank coals.

Abstract:Semiconductor-based photocatalysis is an ideal method for air purification by eliminating nitrogen oxide (NO). However, sluggish carrier separation, photocatalysts deactivation and incomplete oxidation are significant bottlenecks for photocatalytic treatment of indoor pollutant NO. Herein, ZnO with assorted structures is fabricated and undergoes further modification for deliberate surface defect constructions. Utilized flux agents during the synthesis provide a more feasible reducing atmosphere, under which spontaneous generations of the surface vacancies become easier, and gradient concentrations are precisely controlled. Photocatalyst characterizations affirm the successful creation of surface defects, which are further evaluated by solar-light-driven NO (ppb level) removal investigations. Results showed that ZnO rich in oxygen vacancies (VO-rich ZnO) exhibited 5.43 and 1.63 times enhanced NO removal with fewer toxic product NO2 formations than its counterparts pristine and VO-poor ZnO, respectively. Importantly, with higher VO on the unusual nonpolar facets, VO-rich ZnO does not only display enhanced NO conversion, but also shows the unselective NO removal process by producing NO3 –. The plausible reaction mechanisms of promoted NO conversions are further investigated based on the surface VO, well-positioned band structures, and enhanced carrier separations. Results showed that the surface VO with gradient concentrations are not only promoted carrier separation, but also facilitate molecular oxygen activation, leading to the generations of strong oxidant superoxide radicals (·O2 –), and contributing to the enhanced improved efficiency. Adsorption of small molecules (O2, H2O and NO) on the defective surface was further investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which validated the successful adsorption/activation of NO and O2, further contributed to the improved NO conversions.
