Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting is a promising method for hydrogen production, and the search for efficient photocatalysts has received extensive attention. Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures have recently been considered excellent candidates for photocatalytic water splitting. In this work, a BP-MoSe2vdW heterostructure composed of a blue phosphorus (BP) and MoSe2monolayer was studied as a potential photocatalyst for water splitting using first-principles calculations. The results show that the heterostructure has a type-II band structure, and the band edges straddle water redox potentials under biaxial strains from -3% to 2%, satisfying the requirements for photocatalytic water splitting. In addition, the heterostructure has excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) and strong optical absorption in both visible light and near-ultraviolet region, indicating that it is a very promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting. Specifically, the PCE was enhanced to ∼20.2% under a tensile strain of 2%. The Gibbs free energy profiles indicate that BP-MoSe2vdW heterostructure exhibits good catalytic performance in hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. In particular, high carrier mobility implies that the transfer of carriers to reactive sites is easy, and the recombination probability of photogenerated electron-hole pairs is reduced.

Abstract:Janus MoSSe monolayer with built-in electric dipole, as another emerging two-dimensional (2D) material after MoS2, is predicted to be an ideal photocatalyst for overall water splitting. However, in spite of the excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Se-surface, the extremely poor oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity of S-surface hinders the achievement of photocatalytic overall water splitting. Herein, we construct a new 2D van der Waals heterostructure consisting of high-OER-active black phosphorus (BP) and Janus MoSSe monolayer, and demonstrate a new strategy of Janus BP/SMoSe heterostructure to achieve wide-spectral-responsive photocatalytic overall water splitting. The electronic structures and optical properties of two different heterostructures, BP/SMoSe and BP/SeMoS, are systematically investigated via first principles density, exhibiting a type-II band arrangement. Unlike BP/SeMoS, the BP/SMoSe heterostructure shows excellent optical properties, such as a large dielectric constant of 8.14 and a small optical absorption boundary of 0.10 eV. Furthermore, BP/SMoSe heterostructure possesses greater light absorption intensity and a broader light absorption range. It is found that the BP/SMoSe heterostructure exhibits proper band alignment and enhanced intrinsic dipole, which is favorable to obtain high electron-hole separation efficiency. This work provides a feasible strategy of 2D Janus BP/SMoSe heterostructure for approaching almost perfect overall water-splitting photocatalysis.

Abstract:Constructing two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is a promising strategy to improve the photocatalytic efficiency of a single 2D material and has attracted wide attention. Here, the electronic structures, optical properties, and photocatalytic mechanism of the 2D GeC/BSe vdW heterostructure are investigated by first-principles calculations. It is demonstrated that the GeC/BSe heterostructure is comparatively very stable and possesses a staggered band alignment configuration. An intrinsic built-in electric field from the GeC layer to the BSe layer would be established at the interface, allowing the formation of Z-scheme charge transfer mode in the GeC/BSe heterostructure. Furthermore, its band edges exactly straddle the water redox potentials; overall water splitting can thus be expected. The GeC/BSe heterostructure also has a good light absorption coefficient with the magnitude order of 105cm−1 . Moreover, it is proposed that the adoption of tensile strain can further promote the optical absorptions in the visible light range because of the favorable modulation in the bandgap, which benefits the photocatalytic reaction. Finally, the excellent abilities of H2O adsorption and H2 desorption are shown in the GeC/BSe heterostructure. Abstract:Recently, the energy shortage has become increasingly prominent, and hydrogen (H 2 ) energy has attracted extensive attention as a clean resource. Two-dimensional (2D) materials show excellent physical and chemical properties, which demonstrates considerable advantages in the application of photocatalysis compared with traditional materials. In this investigation, based on first-principles methods, 2D PtS 2 and MoTe 2 are selected to combine a heterostructure using van der Waals (vdW) forces, which suggests a type-II band structure to prevent the recombination of the photogenerated charges. Then, the calculated band edge positions reveal the decent ability to develop the redox reaction for water splitting at pH 0. Besides, the potential drop between the PtS 2 /MoTe 2 vdW heterostructure interface also can separate the photogenerated electrons and holes induced by the charge density difference of the PtS 2 and MoTe 2 layers. Moreover, the fantastic optical performances of the PtS 2 /MoTe 2 vdW heterostructure further explain the promising advanced usage for photocatalytic decomposition of water.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) S-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures (HSs) have aroused much interest as advanced photocatalysts due to their strong redox ability and light utilization. In this work, we have proposed a 2D/2D vdW HS composed of Janus BiTeCl monolayer (ML) and GeSe ML, and systematically investigated its photocatalytic performance using first-principles calculations. Our results show that the HS exhibits an appropriate electronic band in which the existence of intrinsic built-in electric field from GeSe ML to BiTeCl ML enhances the separation of photo-induced electron-hole pairs and certifies a S-scheme mechanism in the HS. Furthermore, the optical and electronic properties of the HS are nearly independent of either biaxial or uniaxial strain, showing robustness of the HS applied in an ever-changing environment. Notably, the HS can achieve spontaneously solar-driven water splitting and exhibits an enhanced solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency up to 19.27 % owing to its S-scheme mechanism and wide range of light absorption with high absorption coefficient. Our results give insights to the structure, electronic and photocatalytic properties of 2D/2D Janus BiTeCl/GeSe vdW HS and may provide a promising S-scheme photocatalyst for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Solar photocatalytic hydrogen production is attracting great attention for addressing the environmental and energy challenges, while the low solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency of photocatalysts hinders its industrial implementation. To enhance the STH efficiency, the construction of single-atom photocatalyst and direct Z-scheme heterojunctions (HJs) is deemed as promising strategies. This work has thoroughly studied the photocatalytic properties of WSe 2 /ZrS 2 , GaTe/ZrS 2 van der Waals HJs, as well as these HJs anchored by single atoms (Pt@WSe 2 /ZrS 2 , Pt@GaTe/ZrS 2 ) using the first-principles calculations. The results indicate that appropriate bandgaps, band edge positions and internal electric field effectively accelerate photogenerated carrier migration via direct Z-scheme path in WSe 2 /ZrS 2 and GaTe/ZrS 2 HJs. After anchoring Pt atoms onto the reducing agent layer of these HJs, the hydrogen evolution performance of both Pt@WSe 2 /ZrS 2 and Pt@GaTe/ZrS 2 systems are significantly enhanced, enabling spontaneous redox reactions. Furthermore, these HJs exhibit excellent light absorption capacity, with their optical absorption spectra even expanding into the near-infrared range. Especially, the STH efficiency of Pt@GaTe/ZrS 2 HJ reaches 12.94%, surpassing the threshold necessary for future industrial applications. Therefore, this study presents a novel strategy for precisely modulating photocatalytic performance and predicts that Pt@WSe 2 /ZrS 2 and Pt@GaTe/ZrS 2 HJs are promising direct Z-scheme systems for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Constructing van der Waals (vdW) hetero-structure by stacking different two-dimensional (2D) materials has become an effective method for designing new-type and high-quality electronic and optoelectronic nano-devices. In this work, we designed a 2D As/BlueP vdW hetero-structure by stacking monolayer arsenene (As) and monolayer blue phosphorous (BlueP) vertically, which were recently implemented in experiments, and investigated its structural, electronic, and photocatalytic water splitting properties by using the standard first principles calculation method with HSE06 hybrid exchange-correlation functional. Numerical results show that the As/BlueP vdW hetero-structure is structural robust, even at room temperature. It presents semi-conducting behavior, and the conduction band minimum (CBM) and the valence band maximum (VBM) are dominated by BlueP and As, respectively. The typical type-II band alignment predicts the potential application of the hetero-structure in highly efficient optoelectronics and solar energy conversion. Moreover, the CBM and the VBM straddle the redox potentials of water in acid environment, predicting the possibility of the As/BlueP hetero-structure as a 2D photocatalyst for water splitting. When an in-plane strain is applied, the band edges and, further, the optoelectronic properties of the hetero-structure can be effectively tuned. Especially, when tensile strain is equal to 4.5%, the optical absorption spectrum is effectively broadened in a visible light region, which will largely improve its photocatalytic efficiency, although the pH value of the solution range reduction. This work provides theoretical evidence that the As/BlueP hetero-structure has potential application as a 2D photocatalyst in water splitting.

Abstract:To overcome current serious energy and environmental issues, photocatalytic water splitting holds great promise because it requires only solar energy as an energy input to produce hydrogen. In this work, based on first-principle calculations, we studied the van der Waals heterostructure formed by PtS2 and arsenene (Are) monolayers that were successfully synthesized on a large scale at high quality. From an analysis of the migration paths of photoinduced electrons and holes, a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic mechanism is demonstrated in this heterostructure. Furthermore, the PtS2/Are direct Z-scheme heterostructure has decent band edge positions to promote the redox reaction to decompose water at pH 0. The interfacial charge difference and potential drop are presented, which further support the formation of a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst. More importantly, the PtS2/Are heterostructure has quite high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency (49.32%), significantly enhanced compared with isolated PtS2 (12.67%) or Are (10.34%) monolayers. This direct Z-scheme PtS2/Are heterostructure with excellent STH efficiency suggests its promising application as a photocatalyst for water splitting.
Highly efficient photocatalytic water splitting in direct Z-scheme α -In2Se3/Are van der Waals heterostructures

Abstract:It has been shown that adopting two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors as photocatalyst for water splitting can be a promising way to achieve green and clean energy. We investigate the heterostructure generated by α -In2Se3 and arsenene (Are) semiconductors manufactured on a wide scale with excellent quality. For water splitting at pH 0, the α -In2Se3/Are heterostructures are shown to provide a direct Z-scheme photocatalytic process that prevents electron–hole recombination and holding an appropriate band edge energy potential for driving the redox reaction. According to the estimated charge density, the Are monolayer is positively charged whereas the α -In2Se3 monolayer is negatively charged. By calculating the Gibbs free energy of the intermediate reactants in water splitting process, α -In2Se3/Are heterostructure demonstrated to be an excellent catalyst for HER and OER. More importantly, the α -In2Se3/Are heterostructures have quite high solar-to hydrogen (STH) efficiency (57.08% for A 1 and 24.67% for B 3 ), significantly enhanced compared with isolated α -In2Se3 (18.39%) or Are (6.05%) monolayers. All of data suggest that this α -In2Se3/Are heterostructure with direct Z-scheme can be utilized in photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:The development of simple and efficient visible light photocatalytic catalysts for hydrogen production from water is an important development direction in the field of photocatalysis, and composite two-dimensional materials are found to be promising candidates. This paper constructs a novel two-dimensional MoSe2/PtSe2 type-II heterojunction and systematically studies its geometric structure, electronic structure, and optical properties by first-principles calculation. It is evident that the heterojunction has good thermodynamic, kinetic, and mechanical stability, as well as excellent hole carrier mobility, which is conducive to the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The optical properties show that MoSe2/PtSe2 heterojunction has the best optical absorption efficiency for visible light and has the ability to cross the water-cracking oxidation-reduction potential at pH = 4. More importantly, the MoSe2/PtSe2 heterojunction shows great hydrogen absorption reaction performance, indicating that it is a potential photocatalyst for overall water splitting of visible light, and has broad application prospects in the field of photocatalysis and optoelectronics.

Abstract:Photocatalysts for water splitting are of particular importance to a renewable energy based energy and economic landscape. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors hold significant promise because of their large surface area compared to bulk photocatalysts. To overcome the crucial problem of the short lifetime of photogenerated charges, 2D van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are being considered due to their awesome ability to separate photogenerated electrons and holes. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art studies on the topic of 2D photocatalysts, especially vdW heterostructure, for water splitting. After demonstrating the fundamental concepts of the light-driven redox reaction for water splitting, we discuss a number of promising 2D vdW heterostructures, highlighting the transition metal dichalcogenides and phosphorene based heterostructures, from both theoretical and experimental insights. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges in this area of investigation. This article presents the advanced understanding of 2D vdW heterostructures in photocatalysis, which provides new opportunities for improving the efficiency of hydrogen generation from water splitting.
A direct Z-scheme photocatalyst PtS2/HfGe2N4 van der Waals heterostructure for highly efficient water splitting: first-principles study

Abstract:The construction of semiconductor van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures has emerged as a promising approach to enhance the performance of photocatalysts for water splitting. In this study, a PtS 2 /HfGe 2 N 4 vdW heterojunction was designed, and its photocatalytic properties were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results indicate that the heterojunction exhibits strong light absorption and features a type-II band alignment. Charge transfer within the heterojunction creates an internal electric field, enabling its action as a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst. Additionally, its well-suited band edge position facilitates the redox reactions required for water splitting. Notably, the heterojunction demonstrates a high-intensity light absorption coefficient of 3.8 × 10 5 cm −1 at 2.3 eV corresponding to the green light in the visible spectrum, highlighting the heterojunction's potential for photocatalytic water splitting applications.

Abstract:Recent investigations have revealed that some transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), such as MoS2 and WS2, are excellent candidates for high-efficiency photocatalysts for water splitting. However, the high recombination rate of photogenerated carriers greatly hinders their practical application. A promising solution involves developing novel TMDs-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures with type-II band alignment. In this study, we used first-principles calculations to design two new heterostructures—MoS2/BSe and WS2/BSe—as potential photocatalysts and investigated their structures, stabilities, and electronic and optical properties. We found that both MoS2/BSe and WS2/BSe vdW heterostructures are stable and possess inherent type-II band alignment, which significantly suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Furthermore, their band edges straddle the redox potential of water, making them suitable for use as photocatalysts in water splitting. They also possess significant built-in electric fields, relatively high carrier mobilities, and excellent abilities to absorb sunlight. Our theoretical findings should shed light on the design of novel TMD-based photocatalysts for water splitting and provide useful guidelines for future experiments.
Electronic Properties and Photocatalytic Water Splitting with High Solar-to-hydrogen Efficiency in a Hbnc/janus WSSe Heterojunction: First-principles Calculations

Abstract:Currently, designing and exploring a photocatalyst with an interfacial electric field for hydrogen production from water splitting is crucial. Hence, based on first-principles calculations, we first calculate the electronic properties of the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)/Janus WSSe heterojunction. However, the inherent energy band conformational defects of the hBN/Janus WSSe heterojunction inhibit the efficiency of photocatalytic. To solve this problem, we doped C = C bonds on the monolayer hBN to tune the band gap. The research shows that the transition from the traditional type-I band alignment to the type-II band alignment can be achieved through different contracting methods between monolayer hexagonal boron nitride carbon (hBNC) and monolayer Janus WSSe. Notably, the hBNC/SWSe heterojunction is a direct Z-scheme photocatalyst and has high carrier mobility. Compared with the hBNC/SeWS heterojunction, the hBNC/SWSe heterojunction shows higher reduction reaction overpotential (chi H2 = 2.56 eV) and oxidation reaction overpotential (chi O2 = 0.83 eV) under acidic conditions. Furthermore, the hBNC/SWSe heterojunction has a high quantum efficiency and solar hydrogen production efficiency (33.31%). Gibbs free energy calculations confirm that both oxidation evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction are exothermic reactions and can proceed spontaneously under the external potential provided by photogenerated carriers. These results suggest that the hBNC/SWSe heterojunction has potential applications in visible-light-driven water splitting.
GaSe/YAlS3: A Type-Ii Van Der Waals Heterostructure with Ultrahigh Solar-to-hydrogen Efficiency for Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting, a process aimed at hydrogen production, is considered a pivotal clean energy sources to achieve environmental friendliness and high energy efficiency in the future. The crux of achieving this objective lies in the design of stable and efficient catalysts. Herein, we proposed a novel type-II band alignment GaSe/YAlS3 van der Waals heterostructure with robust stability for photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric field of YAlS3 monolayer can break the requirement of band gap (> 1.23 eV) in traditional photocatalytic water splitting theory and significantly enhancing the utilization of solar energy. Encouragingly, compared to individual monolayers GaSe or YAlS3, the optical absorption coefficients of the GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure are significantly improved and the corrected solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is improved by 406% and 132%, respectively, reaching an impressive 29.73% efficiency. Furthermore, the heterostructure demonstrates exceptional overall water splitting performance across a broad pH range and maintains a consistently high STH efficiency (25.41%similar to 34.71%) under a wide range biaxial strain (-6%-5%). In addition, the designed GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure showcases enhanced absorption of visible as well as partial absorption of infrared light for photocatalytic water splitting. These compelling findings unequivocally establish GaSe/YAlS3 heterostructure as an excellent and promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting.
PtS2/g-C3N4 van der Waals heterostructure: A direct Z-scheme photocatalyst with high optical absorption, solar-to-hydrogen efficiency and catalytic activity

Abstract:Using two-dimensional semiconductors to build heterojunction as photocatalyst for water splitting is an important green and clean energy technology and has wide development prospects. Here, the monolayered PtS2 and g-C3N4 are used to build the direct Z-scheme van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure, and the structure, electrical, Bader charge, optical properties and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency are calculated in detail through first-principle calculations. The direct Z-scheme PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has an inherent type-II band alignment that enables it to reduce the photogenerated carriers aggregation, and it also possesses a decent band edge position to fully induce the redox reactions of decomposed water. The charge density shows that PtS2 monolayer is negatively charged while g-C3N4 monolayer is positively charged, and the interface potential drop of PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure forms a built-in electric field with the direction from g-C3N4 to PtS2. The PtS2/g-C3N4 vdW heterostructure has suitable optical property, outstanding solar-to-hydrogen efficiency, high catalytic activity and thus a promising application prospect for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Constructing two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures is becoming a promising way for photocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen. In this Letter, we perform a 2D vdW blue phosphorous/β-AsP (BP/β-AsP) heterostructure based on density functional theory calculations. The type II band alignment in the BP/β-AsP vdW heterostructure is beneficial for separating the photogenerated electrons and holes and suppressing their recombination. The BP/β-AsP heterostructure not only keeps a suitable band edge position for the water splitting reaction but also significantly improves the optical absorption in the visible and ultraviolet light region. Appropriate uniaxial strain can change the indirect bandgap of the BP/β-AsP heterostructure into a direct one. The present findings indicate that the BP/β-AsP heterostructure is a promising candidate for applications in photovoltaic devices and photocatalysis.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting, a process aimed at hydrogen production, is considered a pivotal clean energy sources to achieve environmental friendliness and high energy efficiency in the future. The crux of achieving this objective lies in the design of stable and efficient catalysts. Herein, we proposed a novel type-II band alignment GaSe/YAlS 3 van der Waals heterostructure with robust stability for photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric field of YAlS 3 monolayer can break the requirement of band gap (>1.23 eV) in traditional photocatalytic water splitting theory and significantly enhancing the utilization of solar energy. Encouragingly, compared to individual monolayers GaSe or YAlS 3 , the optical absorption coefficients of the GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure are significantly improved and the corrected solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is improved by 406% and 132%, respectively, reaching an impressive 29.73% efficiency. Furthermore, the heterostructure demonstrates exceptional overall water splitting performance across a broad pH range and maintains a consistently high STH efficiency (25.41%∼34.71%) under a wide range biaxial strain (−6%–5%). In addition, the designed GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure showcases enhanced absorption of visible as well as partial absorption of infrared light for photocatalytic water splitting. These compelling findings unequivocally establish GaSe/YAlS 3 heterostructure as an excellent and promising candidate for photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:The photocatalytic efficiency of monolayer materials can be significantly enhanced by constructing two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures. This study presents first principles calculations based on density functional theory to investigate the electronic properties and photocatalytic mechanism of van der Walls heterostructures of boron arsenide (BAs) with the Janus MXY (M=W; X/Y=Se, Te) monolayers, with and without Se vacancies. Results from binding energies, phonon spectra, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations indicate that the heterostructures are stable from all respects. Moreover, all the heterostructures exhibit direct bandgaps with valence band maxima and conduction band minima suitable for water splitting. Additionally, these heterostructures possess high optical absorption coefficients in the visible and ultraviolet regions. In particular, our calculations predict BAs/WTeSe, with and without Se vacancies, as promising candidates for photocatalytic water splitting applications.

Abstract:Nowadays, designing a two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals heterostructure (vdWH) is one of the most promising methods for improving photocatalytic performance and harvesting solar energy. Here, we proposed a novel CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH as an efficient photocatalyst for overall water splitting. The elastic constants, phonon dispersion, and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation show high mechanical and thermodynamic stability. The HSE06 functional reveals that CrSe 2 /GaN vdWHs possess a direct bandgap. The DFT scheme suggests that the current vdWH belongs to the type-II band alignment and has enough kinetic redox potentials for overall photocatalytic water splitting. The intrinsic electric-field accelerates the photogenerated carrier separation. The carrier mobility of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH is observed to be enhanced as compared to the mobility of the CrSe 2 monolayer. Additionally, the optical absorption of the vdWH is found to be high in the visible and ultraviolet regions. The CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH has a high efficiency of solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion (33.41%). The Gibbs free energy shows that the redox reactions (HER & OER) could be sustained under the action of an external electric-field. Finally, the external strain can tune the band edge and optical absorption of the CrSe 2 /GaN vdWH for desired applications. Therefore, the CrSe 2 /GaN vdW heterostructure could be an excellent photocatalyst for water splitting with high solar energy conversion.
