Abstract:In this paper, we consider a multi-agent consensus problem with an active leader and variable interconnection topology. The dynamics of the active leader is given in a general form of linear system. The switching interconnection topology with communication delay among the agents is taken into consideration. A neighbor-based estimator is designed for each agent to obtain the unmeasurable state variables of the dynamic leader, and then a distributed feedback control law is developed to achieve consensus. The feedback parameters are obtained by solving a Riccati equation. By constructing a common Lyapunov function, some sufficient conditions are established to guarantee that each agent can track the active leader by assumption that interconnection topology is undirected and connected. We also point out that some results can be generalized to a class of directed interaction topologies. Moreover, the input-to-state stability (ISS) is obtained for multi-agent system with variable interconnection topology and communication delays in a disturbed environment.

Abstract:Most previous collaborative virtual environments mainly use spatial aspect to implement interest management. However, it turns to be difficult to manage awareness using semantic or organization considerations, specially in densely populated open space environments. Aiming at this kind of applications, we propose a novel interest management model with dynamic interaction analysis in CVE. Our work is concerned with dynamic interaction in crowds, from which we derive the semantics of user behaviors, more specifically, the alteration of interest focus of users. Above all, we would define the construction of Interest Network. Then an interaction analysis approach is introduced to find out the interest focus of virtual humans. Psychology effects in crowd or a group of participants are also analyzed and incorporated in our approach. Lastly, a prototype virtual conference application is implemented to demonstrate the effects of our model on optimizing collaborative awareness.

Abstract:COVID-19 has prompted diverse responses from governments and created an extreme context for organizations to operate. In this context, company leaders face fluctuated macrolevel policies, endure physical separation from their members, and must rely on virtual communication to conduct teamwork. Yet little is known about what and how leader communication can be effective in inducing team creativity to survive the extreme context. Building on the affective events theory and the literature on media richness, we develop a theoretical model explicating how leaders' rich (as opposed to lean) virtual communication can mitigate the negative impact of stringent government responses to COVID-19 on work team creativity via a sequential mediation process: first by inhibiting team anxiety and then by facilitating team information elaboration. Data from a three-stage eight-day longitudinal field experiment, in combination with an experience sampling method with 251 employees, on a chain preschool in eight Chinese cities, provide strong support for the hypothesized model.

Abstract:Organizations have widely begun to adopt remote working since the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the effect of remote work on team performance remains unknown. A multi-layer interaction system based on organizational systems theory was designed to assess how remote working affects team performance. Individual performance was computed using a positively skewed stochastic performance model and a modified NK model was used to simulate the team performance under specialized and collaborative conditions. The results showed a complex relationship between task complexity and remote rate and that collaborative teams require a higher remote rate when the probability of employees benefiting from remote work is low to avoid potential detriments from excessive competition. Further results considering agent heterogeneity suggest that individual-level gains are magnified or reduced at the team level and that assessing individual heterogeneity and task complexity is significant for designing remote strategies. In addition, differential mechanisms in team structure and the hierarchy of authority are discussed. This study presents the design and application of a novel business system that helps teams make optimal remote decisions in addition to responding to conflicting discussions in the literature and in practice and providing new insights into decision-making systems in a digital context.

Abstract:Effective teamwork in an initially leaderless group requires a high level of collective leadership emerging from dynamic interactions among group members. Leader emergence is a crucial topic in collective leadership, yet it is challenging to investigate as the problem context is typically highly complex and dynamic. Here, we explore leadership emergence and leadership perception by means of computational simulations whose assumptions and parameters were informed by empirical research and human-subject experiments. Our agent-based model describes the process of group planning. Each agent is assigned with three key attributes: talkativeness , intelligence , and credibility . An agent can propose a suggestion to modify the group plan as a speaker or respond and evaluate others’ suggestions and leadership as a listener. Simulation results suggested that agents with high values of talkativeness , intelligence , and credibility tended to be perceived as leaders by their peers. Results also showed that talkativeness may be the most significant and instantaneous predictor for leader emergence of the three investigated attributes: talkativeness, intelligence, and credibility. In terms of group performance, smaller groups may outperform larger groups regarding their problem-solving ability in the beginning, but their performance tends to be of no significant difference in a long run. These results match the empirical literature and offer a mechanistic, operationalized description of the collective leadership processes.

Abstract:Incorporating citizen engagement in scaling up nature-based solutions (NbS) is a burgeoning and promising approach to foster localized, decentralized, and bottom-up project management strategies. While scholars have expressed heightened interest in citizen participation, there is a prominent lack of exploration into the dynamic and evolutionary nature of participatory behaviors. Reinforced by the theory of planned behavior and scale-free network, an agent-based simulation was constructed to simulate the citizens' behavioral changes and evolutions in engaging NbS projects under different conditions. The simulation results suggest that as information is disseminated and opinions are exchanged, the proportion of residents exhibiting silence and unwillingness to participate experiences a fluctuating increase, while the proportion of residents with willingness to participate undergoes a fluctuating decrease. Ultimately, the proportions of the three groups tend to stabilize. Relying predominantly on the formal government-led network has the potential to enhance neighborhood participation rates, whereas an overreliance on informal networks rooted in social ties and information dissemination can have notable detrimental effects on participation. This study offers insights into the evolutionary process of citizen participation in NbS projects, thereby contributing valuable recommendations for promoting the sustainable development of environmental projects.

Abstract:The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic shook the entire world. All sectors, industries, organisations, and more importantly, people were affected by multiple restrictions implemented by their respective governing bodies. Federal lockdowns and all the emerging laws and regulations associated with them have forced organisations worldwide to transition their operations to remote environments. The implications from the organisations’ perspective vary from leadership to management, structure to operations, and training and development to policy making. However, from the employees’ perspective, the implications vary from general well-being to work engagement, satisfaction to motivation, and followership to trust. Nonetheless, remote work has other implications, such as productivity, the impact of social distancing, work-life balance, and isolation concerns. Therefore, this article aims to present critical thinking and comprehensively analyse the existing literature on remote working, transformational leadership, and work engagement contexts. Theoretical and practical gaps are discussed, and recommendations for future research could contribute to our better understanding of remote leadership and its practical elements. Remote working environments are believed to be permanent working arrangements for many organisations and employees; hence, scholars and practitioners must explore them to further depths.

Abstract:Purpose The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) situation has led to the emergence of virtual teams in all organizations, and the role of leadership has become more pertinent. The current research focuses on understanding the factors for better team performance in virtual teams. Based on the contingency perspective, the behavioral complexity in leadership (BCL) theory is the most appropriate as BCL requires the leader to demonstrate multiple contrasting leadership behaviors according to the situation. Both internal as well external roles were explored, which could facilitate better communication quality and role clarity to increase interpersonal trust and leadership effectiveness in the current crisis. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from employees who have worked in virtual teams during the crisis and who have experience of working in a virtual team environment. A total of 200 questionnaires were distributed, and 175 were received. A path model was built applying partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings Communication quality has come as a partial mediator for the relationship between internal and external leadership roles and trust. Role clarity fully mediated the relationship between external leadership roles and conflict. Internal and external leadership roles showed a significant effect on leadership effectiveness, which were further related to team performance in virtual teams. Additionally, synchronous technology was used more by virtual teams. Research limitations/implications The study did not examine cultural differences or cultural adaptation in virtual teams. Instead of the BCL theory, future research may apply attribute-based or relational-based theory to examine leadership roles in virtual team performance. Originality/value Using the BCL theory, the current study contributes to an understanding of virtual team performance and the internal as well as external role of leaders. This is relevant in an environment of extreme ambiguity such as COVID-19.

Abstract:Changes in the external market environment put forward objective requirements for the formulation of organizational strategic plans, making it difficult for the organization’s leaders to make the right and effective decisions quickly on their own. As a result, participative leadership, which encourages and supports employees to participate in the decision-making process of organizations, has received increasing attention in both theory and practice. We searched the literature related to participative leadership in databases such as Web of Science, EBSCO, ProQuest, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Based on this, we clarify the concept of participative leadership, propose a definition of participative leadership, summarize measurement scales for this type of leadership, and compare participative leadership with other leadership styles (empowering leadership and directive leadership). We also present a research framework for participative leadership that demonstrates its antecedents; the mechanisms for its development based on social exchange theory, conservation of resources theory, social cognitive theory; social information processing theory, and implicit leadership theory; and outcomes. Finally, we identify five potential research areas: Connotation, antecedents, outcomes, mediators and moderators, and study of participative leadership in China.

Strengthening perceptions of virtual team cohesiveness and effectiveness in new normal: A hyperpersonal communication theory perspective

Abstract:In the post-pandemic era, many team management challenges arise in multinational organisations along with the pervasion of virtual teamwork collaboration, such as workplace isolation (an unsatisfied need for belongingness). However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms required for solving this context-specific challenge by strengthening virtual team cohesiveness and effectiveness. Accordingly, this study adopts the hyperpersonal communication theory derived from Walther's hyperpersonal model of computer-mediated communication (CMC) to provide an alternative theoretical explanation to understand better how individuals perceive their team cohesiveness and effectiveness in the specific CMC setting. Supported by 549 valid responses, I illuminate how mutual assistance as a typical interaction among CMC team members cultivates benevolent norms and facilitates members' perceptions of team cohesiveness and effectiveness. More importantly, this study opens the door for future research on management interventions that can help enhance team cohesiveness and effectiveness at the individual perception level.

Abstract:Enabled by advances in information and communication technologies, virtual team has been serving as an effective form to unite knowledge workers beyond various physical and social constraints for more than one decade. Nevertheless, some organizations recently started to question the effectiveness of virtual team. Scholars also argued that virtual team members remain embedded in their situated surroundings and configuration of virtual team members situating in different workplaces would be even more complicated. This study intends to solve this emerging puzzle that is not yet considered in prior work. We draw on literatures of physical workplaces and virtual team creativity and propose a research model to investigate the influence of workplace configuration on virtual team creativity and the influential mechanism of interaction balance among virtual team members. A laboratory experiment is designed to test the proposed research model and hypotheses. We discuss the potential theoretical contributions and practical implications in the end.

Abstract:To analyze urban agglomeration integration and multi-government interaction,a multi-agent simulation model is built through conceptual model(causal reasoning chart),mathematic model(local rule design) and computer model(Netlogo programming),to simulate the dynamic process of the multi-governments’ behavioral interaction and attitude evolution.The experiments reveal that group interactions always tend to be stable,and decision-makers should adopt control measures actively and prematurely to avoid nonideal equilibrium;that the effects of administration measures exceed motivation measures,and the system of control measures might lean to administration measures aptly;and that the initial state of integration preferences have no determining influence on evolution results.Upper governments or coordination agencies should comprehensively consider the key elements in group interacting process,and accordingly adopt motivation and administration measures to advance the urban agglomeration integrating progress.

Abstract:The present paper sets out to investigate the relationships among several key constructs that cover the work patterns and processes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Emphasis is laid on the leader-team communication, the fostering of a strong team culture, team performance and satisfaction with teamwork in the case of virtual teams. The scrutiny is intended to complement recent developments in the field which compared traditional and virtual teams at different levels by adding knowledge to virtual teams' communication and interaction patterns and processes. In this vein, an online survey was conducted with 175 members from different virtual teams. The findings showed the advancement of a pertinent conceptual model, mostly displaying significant relationships among constructs. Four out of the five formulated hypotheses were validated, the highest influences being reported between leader-team communication and team culture, respectively, and between team performance and satisfaction with teamwork. Furthermore, the structural model explained over 50% of the variance in the satisfaction with teamwork, thus supporting the relevance of the inferred relationships.

The basic idea is stated as follows: according to design stable control law with a navigation feedback term the follow agents equipped with virtual leaders. The velocity of the center of the mass of agents will exponentially converge to weighted average velocity of the virtual leaders by the information navigation of virtual leaders, finally approach to the same. The certain distance between every agent is kept and eventually form flocking due to the introduction of the artificial potential function. And on this basis we assume that the initial network is connected and the control law make the network of the multi-agent system preserving connectivity.

Abstract:COVID-19 has prompted conferences to transition to online formats, inadvertently diminishing their emphasis on the social element. In online events, a sense of presence leading to a sense of companionship is limited in conventional conferencing platforms. Although the extant body of research on virtual conferences is growing, academic events in the Metaverse get little attention. Such events and their relevance to social presence within the Metaverse and associations among observable factors are seldom discussed. This study examined the perspectives of scholars in an online seminar during COVID-19 hosted in Gather.Town, a Metaverse-like conferencing environment. A hypothetical model was built to determine whether social presence and technology self-efficacy impact scholars' satisfaction and facilitate academic interactions. Ninety-three scholars in an academic seminar for research projects in information and computer education were polled to obtain data, which was then evaluated using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The proposed model explained 57.1 percent of the variables, and the findings showed that social presence and technology self-efficacy had a positive and significant impact on academic interactions and exchanges, as well as technology self-efficacy playing an essential role in determining overall satisfaction. However, social presence does not appear to have a direct impact on satisfaction, implying that a positive academic experience may still be achieved with or without the feature of being with others supported by the Metaverse. Although digital communication will only become more diverse and intense, it is important to understand how to maintain the basic character of human interactions virtually, even amid a pandemic. This research attempts to shed light on some critical factors in creating a conducive environment for future Metaverse-like academic events.

Abstract:We integrate functional leadership theory with theorizing in virtual team leadership research to extend and meta-analytically test theory regarding the relationships between different types of leadership behaviours (i.e., relationship-focused and task-focused leadership) and virtual team performance as well as moderators of these relationships. We find that both relationship-focused and task-focused leadership positively relate to virtual team performance. Further, two structural moderators (i.e., task interdependence and team size) and two methodological moderators (i.e., team type and the operationalization of team performance) change the team leadership-virtual team performance relationship, resulting in differential effects of relationship- and task-focused leadership. Regarding the structural moderators, we find that task-focused leadership is a weaker predictor of team performance in virtual teams with high (compared to low) task interdependence, and relationship-focused leadership is a stronger predictor of virtual team performance for larger (compared to smaller) teams. In terms of the methodological moderators, we find a stronger effect of task-focused leadership for intact (compared to adhoc) virtual teams, and a stronger effect of relationship-focused leadership on perceived team effectiveness (compared to efficiency/productivity). We conclude with a discussion of important areas for future research and highlight theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, virtual simulation games have provided an effective teaching method for online entrepreneurship education. By exploring the mechanisms that influence student engagement and learning outcomes from different perspectives, such as game design, team and individual perspectives, numerous scholars have demonstrated that such a teaching method can effectively improve students’ engagement and learning performance. However, the existing studies are relatively scattered, and there is a scarcity of studies in which the effects of said factors are considered. Based on the learning process 3P model (presage-process-product) proposed by Biggs (1993) , students’ perceived experience of game design, teamwork and self-efficacy were taken as variables in the early learning stage in the present study, and the influence mechanism of virtual simulation game learning experience on students’ engagement and entrepreneurial skill development was explored, so as to close the gap in existing research. In the present study, 177 college students from Chinese universities were surveyed and the data were surveyed using AMOS 23.0 software. Although the empirical results show that students’ “goal and feedback” and “alternative” experience of game design did not have a significant positive impact on students’ engagement, there was a direct and significant effect the development of entrepreneurial skills. Students’ experience of teamwork and general self-efficacy could not only directly and significantly affect the development of entrepreneurial skills, but also indirectly affect the development of entrepreneurial skills through learning engagement. The research results are practically significant for teachers in the selection and development of virtual simulation games, can be effectively applied in teaching process management, and can improve students’ engagement and learning performance.

Abstract:The opinions communication in online community has the properties of complex system.By constructing an opinion communication model based on Mult-agents System,the rational agent model based on the paradigms of neoclassical economic theory has been extended in this paper,and the process of opinions communication in online community has been described by constructing a main equation model of spatio-temporal communication field based on the approach of MAS simulation and mean-field.The study shows,there exists the stable state and critical value of community bifurcation parameter,community temperature,opinion leaders and the additional influence of external fields.Faster opinion communication speed and proper community temperature are helpful to the arriving the state status of the system,opinion leaders or external influence can exert impact on the behavior of agents,and formulation the majority in the online community.

Abstract:This paper considers mainly the leader-following consensus for multiple agents with general linear system dynamics under switching topologies. Three different settings are systematically considered. We first consider the setting that the underlying interaction topologies switch arbitrarily among the possible weakly connected digraphs and then extend it to a more general setting that the weak connectivity of the interaction topologies is kept for some disconnected time intervals with short length due to the communication constraints among agents. Exponentially, consensus control is proved to be achieved, and the convergence rate can be specified as well for both settings in spite of the relaxed conditions on the system dynamics of each individual agent which even allow that each agent has exponentially unstable mode, while for the last case where the weak connectivity is only maintained on the joint of the interaction topologies, consensus control is proved to be achieved when the system matrix of each individual agent satisfies certain stability conditions.
