Abstract:Stretchable sensors are essential for flexible electronics, which can be made with polymer elastomers as the matrix. The main challenge in producing practical devices is to obtain polymers with mechanical stability, eco-friendliness, and self-healing properties. Herein, we introduce urea bonds and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy) to synthesize tailored waterborne polyurethanes (WPU-UPy-x) with a hierarchical hydrogen bond (H-bond). Accordingly, sound tensile performance (strength: 53.33 MPa, toughness: 128.97 MJ m-3), satisfying deformation recovery, and good self-healing capability of the WPU-UPy-x film are demonstrated. With atomic force microscope characterization, we find that UPy groups contribute to the highly improved microphase separation of WPU-UPy-x, responsible for good mechanical properties. As a proof of concept, a strain sensor is successfully configured, thanks to the good interfacial interactions between the polyurethane matrix and the Ti3C2Tx MXene conductive filler, which features sensitive and stable performance for monitoring diverse human and mechanical motions. Intriguingly, this sensor is capable of self-healing after cutting and displays well-retained sensitivity to detect the stretched signal. The as-proposed design concept for healable and sensitive strain sensors can shed light on future wearable electronics.

Abstract:Polymeric elastomers play an increasingly important role in the development of stretchable electronics. A highly demanded elastic matrix is preferred to own not only excellent mechanical properties, but also additional features like high toughness and fast self‐healing. Here, a polyurethane (DA‐PU) is synthesized with donor and acceptor groups alternately distributed along the main chain to achieve both intra‐chain and inter‐chain donor‐acceptor self‐assembly, which endow the polyurethane with toughness, self‐healing, and, more interestingly, thermal repair, like human muscle. In detail, DA‐PU exhibits an amazing mechanical performance with elongation at break of 1900% and toughness of 175.9 MJ m−3. Moreover, it shows remarkable anti‐fatigue and anti‐stress relaxation properties as manifested by cyclic tensile and stress relaxation tests, respectively. Even in case of large strain deformation or long‐time stretch, it can almost completely restore to original length by thermal repair at 60 °C in 60 s. The self‐healing speed of DA‐PU is gradually enhanced with the increasing temperature, and can be 1.0–6.15 µm min−1 from 60 to 80 °C. At last, a stretchable and self‐healable capacitive sensor is constructed and evaluated to prove that DA‐PU matrix can ensure the stability of electronics even after critical deformation and cut off.

Abstract:Abstract Based on the irresistible inherent trade‐off between the mechanical and self‐healing performances of cross‐linked polyurethane materials, there is still an intractable challenge to design efficient self‐healing and tough elastomers, especially in flexible sensors. Herein, a tough, efficient self‐healing, and recyclable cross‐linked polyurethane elastomer (DTPU) was prepared by integrating oxime‐carbamate bonds and thiourethane bonds into the network. The extraordinary mechanical properties and self‐healing performances of DTPU elastomers were related to the synergistic effect of oxime‐carbamate bonds in the main chain and thiourethane bonds in the chemical cross‐linked sites. The existence of dynamic cross‐linked points not only optimized the mechanical properties of DTPU but also provided support for the reversible cleavage and formation of oxime carbamate bond, thus endowing DTPU with efficient self‐healing performance and recyclability. After self‐healing at mild temperatures for 6 h, the self‐healed DTPU elastomers had a tensile strength of 30.27 MPa and a self‐healing efficiency of 95.5%. After multiple hot‐pressing, the original mechanical strength of DTPU was restored to over 100%, exhibiting excellent recyclable characteristics. Additionally, strain sensors based on self‐healing flexible elastomers were fabricated by introducing conductive carbon nanotubes. The strain sensors maintained their electrical conductivity after 3 times self‐healing, demonstrating great potential in healable flexible electronics.

Abstract:Mechanically robust elastomers with the functionalities of room-temperature self-healing ability and even recyclability provide new opportunities to revolutionize next-generation flexible electronics. However, it remains a great challenge to synthesize such materials due to the conflicting requirements of the self-healing ability and mechanical robustness for the dynamicity of crosslinks. Herein, a room-temperature self-healing and recyclable polyurethane (PU) elastomer with ultrahigh mechanical performance is constructed by synergistically incorporating dynamic disulfide bonds and multiple hydrogen bonds (H-bonds) into a PU chain. The introduction of diazolidinyl urea (DU) motifs forms strong H-bonds and branching crosslinking points, improving the robustness of the crosslinked structure, and the fast metathesis of the aromatic disulfide bonds mainly contributes to the dynamicity of the crosslinked network. The resulting PU elastomers exhibit high tensile strength (14.08 MPa), toughness (64.6 MJ m −3 ), superior elastic restorability, outstanding self-healing capability (∼81% at room temperature), and multiple recyclability. Furthermore, a wearable sensor based on this elastomer is constructed to monitor different human motions, demonstrating the potential application in wearable electronics.

Abstract:Dou to the demand of high sensitivity and lightweight for flexible electronic devices, people make efforts to the development of wearable devices by integrating flexible electronic devices onto flexible and self-healing substrates. Developing of self-healing material is very important with excellent self-healing efficiency and ultra-high mechanical performance at room temperature. A new self-healing material was successfully synthesized as a high-strength polyurethane elastomer by introducing functional segments with different structural rigidity, including thiourea bonds and oxime-urethane bonds. It was named 2,5 dithiobiurea-dimethylglyoxime-urethane complex-based polyurethane elastomer (DBTU-DOU-PU, hereinafter referred to as DDPU). The mechanical strength of DDPU can be restored to 5 MPa after repairing 10 min at room temperature (25±2 °C). After 72 h recovery, the tensile strength of DDPU is 65.4% of its initial value. The colorless and transparent DDPU material may have broad application prospects, such as electronic skin, human-computer intelligent interaction, flexibly self-healing sensors and so on.

Abstract:Developing new strategies to improve the mechanical robustness of self-healing polymer materials to meet en-gineering requirements remains a great challenge and research focus. Herein, a self-reinforcing strategy of self-healing polyurethane (PU) elastomer is presented to achieve simultaneous giant tensile strength (33.3 & PLUSMN; 1.7 MPa) and toughness (141.9 & PLUSMN; 3.7 MJ m-3). Two chain extenders, diethyl 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)malonate (BDMH) and bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) disulfide, are elaborately regulated in the molecular structure to balance the mechanical and self-healing properties. On the one hand, BDMH containing abundant ester groups provide a large number of hydrogen bond (H-bond) acceptors. On the other hand, the incorporation of aromatic disulfide forms reversible hierarchical H-bonds confined to loosely-stacked hard domains and improves the physical crosslinking density, thus realizing the self-reinforcing of PU elastomer based on the strain-induced crystalli-zation (SIC) of polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMEG) as the soft segment. Hierarchical H-bonds with dynamic nature acting as sacrificial bonds can dissociate and regenerate and dissipate a large amount of energy, thus contributing to mechanical robustness and self-healing properties. In addition to constructing a self-healing PU elastomer with mechanical robustness, a remarkable progress over previous work is that we perform funda-mental study at the molecular level and reveal the three-stage evolution of H-bonds and aggregation structure during stretching, thus revealing the SIC behavior and mechanism, which provides a theoretical basis for the strengthening and toughening of self-healing PU elastomer.

Abstract:Polyurethane elastomers were considered as an ideal material for flexible devices. However, the application of polyurethane elastomers was still largely limited by the disadvanges of poor self-healing property and low conductivity. In this work, a self-healing polyurethane with adjustable mechanical performances was constructed via the introduction of reversible dynamic interactions in the polyurethane matrix, such as metal ion-tripyridine coordinations, disulfide bonds and hydrogen bonds. And lithium salt was incorporated into the polyurethane to achieve ionic conductivity. The obtained polyurethane exhibited adjustable breaking strength with a range of 0.77 ∼ 10.75 MPa, breaking elongation in the range of 1719 ∼ 1863 %, and conductivity in the range of 0.08 ∼ 1.57 × 10 −3 S/m by adding different LiTFSI (5 ∼ 35 wt%) into the polyurethane. In addition, the polyurethane displayed efficient self-healing behavior, well fatigue resistance, and recyclability. Also, the polyurethane showed great application prospects as flexible sensors by performing stable and sensitive responses to a wide range of human body movements.

Abstract:Polypyrrole-polyurethane (PPy-PU) porous materials have been widely used in the research of flexible stress/strain sensors. However, it is inevitable on material damage in the process of force sensing, and it is still a great challenge to prepare a flexible porous sensor with non-contact self-healing performance. In this study, we prepared a non-contact photothermal self-healing PPy-PU porous material containing a reversible oxime urethane bond and polypyrrole, and further packaged it into a porous sensor for strain sensing detection. The obtained PPy-PU porous material has excellent breaking elongation and breaking strength. Benefit from the excellent photothermal conversion of polypyrrole, the maximum surface temperature of the PPy-PU porous material can reach above 110 °C at 1.5-sun that is the required temperature for the cleavage and reorganization of the oxime carbamate bonds in the PU matrix, and the fracture strength of PPy-PU porous material can be restored to more than 85% after self-healing at 1.5-sun for 1 h. The most important is that the self-healing PPy-PU porous sensor can still sensitively detect strain in the range of 1%–10%. Finally, we show the application of the photothermal self-healing PPy-PU porous sensor in the field of human micro-motion, indicating its potential for human physiological monitoring and artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The preparation of functional polyurethane materials with high strength, toughness, and excellent self-healing ability is currently challenging. In this study, a multifunctional bi-dynamic supramolecular crosslinked network PU elastomer was successfully prepared by introducing ionic bonds and aromatic disulfide bonds into a PU matrix. The resulting ionic PU elastomers exhibited impressive mechanical properties, including high tensile strength (39.9 ± 4.4 MPa) and excellent elongation at break (1930 ± 345 %). They also demonstrated efficient self-healing capability (94.4 %), recyclability and processability. The distribution of hydrophilic ion bonds within the polymer networks enabled the elastomers to possess water-induced shape memory and antibacterial activity. Additionally, the hydrophilicity of the elastomers provided a self-cleaning ability when used as a coating material. The covalent bonding of the cations with the PU matrix prevented the leaching of bactericidal substances, ensuring good biocompatibility of the ionic PU. Furthermore, a double-layered self-healing composite flexible sensor was developed using the ionic PU as the substrate and carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CNTs-COOH) as the conductive medium to detect human motion. These multifunctional ionic PU elastomers offer great potential for the design and preparation of robust materials with self-healing ability for various applications across multiple fields.

Abstract:Wearable sensors, stretchable electronics, and many soft robotics materials must have a sufficiently high balance of conductivity, stretchability, and robustness. Intrinsically conductive polymers offer a critical step toward improving wearable sensor materials due to their tunable conductivity, soft/compliant nature, and ability to complex with other synergistic molecules (i.e., polyacids, small molecule dopants). This work demonstrates a new regenerative polymer complex composed of poly(2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid), polyaniline, and phytic acid as a skin-like electronic material. It exhibits ultrahigh stretchability (1935%), repeatable autonomous self-healing ability (repeating healing efficiency >98%), quadratic response to strain (R2 > 0.9998), and linear response to flexion bending (R2 > 0.9994), outperforming current reported wearable strain sensors. While nanofillers typically increase conductivity at the expense of mechanical properties, here we show an increase in both conductivity and mechanical properties when silver nanowires are added, forming a polymer nanocomposite with high electronic sensitivity, unprecedented mechanical properties (a maximum strain of 4693% at ambient humidity; ~52 RH%), and repeatable, autonomous self-healing efficiencies of greater than 98%.

Abstract:Silicon elastomers with excellent self-healing and reprocessing abilities are highly desirable for the advancement of next-generation energy, electronic, and robotic applications. In this study, a dual cross-linked self-healing polysiloxane elastomer was facilely fabricated by introducing an exchangeable imine bond and boroxine into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks. The PDMS elastomers exhibited excellent self-healing properties due to the synergistic effect of dynamic reversible imine bonds and boroxine. After healing for 2 h, the mechanical strength of the damaged elastomers completely and rapidly recovered at room temperature. Furthermore, the prepared PDMS elastomers could be repeatedly reprocessed multiple times under milder conditions without significant degradation in mechanical performance. In addition, a stretchable and self-healable electrical sensor was developed by integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with the PDMS elastomer, which can be employed to monitor multifarious human motions in real time. Therefore, this work provides a new inspiration for preparing self-healable and reprocessable silicone elastomers for future flexible electronics.

Healable and Recyclable Polyurethane with Natural-Rubber-like Resilience via π-Type Tweezer Structure Stabilizing Dynamical Hard Domains

Abstract:Achieving ultrafast resilience comparable to that of irreversible cross-linking elastomers remains a formidable challenge for self-healing supramolecular elastomers. Herein, we construct a π-type tweezer structure formed by imidazolidinylurea and aromatic imine to stabilize dynamical hard domains (SDHDs) in polyurethane (PU) elastomers. SDHDs endow the dynamic PU network with high binding energy and minimal stress relaxation at room temperature, similar to irreversible covalent cross-links. As such, the elastomer demonstrates rapid resilience comparable to vulcanized natural rubber as well as high mechanical strength and toughness. Meanwhile, SDHDs can be readily activated upon heating, enabling exceptional healing ability (∼100% healing efficiency) under mild conditions (50 °C) and complete recovery of mechanical properties after recycling. More interestingly, the PU elastomer exhibits significant elastocaloric effects with an adiabatic temperature change of −13.5 °C, surpassing that of state-of-the-art vulcanized natural rubber (−9.4 °C). Therefore, this work presents a new approach for structural design that enables a balance between conflicting characteristics and expands the potential applications of self-healing supramolecular elastomers.

Abstract:Self-healable polyurethanes (PUs) containing reversible dynamic bonds have been widely recognized and rapidly developed in recent years. Because the self-heal capability and mechanical properties of materials are mutually exclusive in nature, it is still a formidable challenge to design a highly efficient self-healable and robust PUs, especially in wearable electronics field. Herein, a series of self-healable thermosetting PU elastomer based on widely used phenolic urethane bond was prepared to achieve above requirements. In order to investigate the effect of introducing different bisphenol chain extenders into the hard segment domain on the dissociation temperature of phenolic carbamate bond, both bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol AF (BPAF) were used to synthesize thermosetting PU elastomers (PU-BPA and PU-BPAF). The healing efficiency of PU-BPA was 95% with a thermal treatment at 100 °C for 1 h, and its initial dissociation temperature was 90 °C. Due to the presence of trifluoromethyl (-CF3) group, the thermal self-healing efficiency of PU-BPAF was improved, which could be completely healed (100%) at the same conditions and its initial dissociation temperature was reduced to 80 °C. PU-BPAF were used to prepare a self-healable triboelectric nanogenerator (SH-TENG) to convert mechanical movements into electrical energy that can be applied to next-generation wearable devices.Their measured open circuit voltage, short circuit current, short-circuit charge quantity were 240 V, 2.20 μA, 20 nC, respectively. In addition, the PU-BPAF based SH-TENG exhibited better self-cleaning ability (83%) than that of PU-BPA elastomer, which was attributed to the introduction of trifluoromethyl reducing the surface energy of the material. Consequently, PU-BPAF showed great potentials as a self-healable and stretchable conductor to be applied to flexible electronic devices.

Abstract:The polymeric materials can simultaneously possess high mechanical properties and outstanding self‐healing performance under mild condition have found widespread applications in various fields. However, this type of polymers is exceedingly rare due to the trade‐off between mechanical robustness and chain flexibility for healing. In this study, we designed a facile strategy for synergistic integration of dynamic acylsemicarbazide (ASC) bonds and disulfide bonds into polyurethane elastomer by the reaction between 3,3′‐dithiobis(propionohydrazide) and isocyanate‐terminated Pre‐PU. The obtained elastomer ASC‐SS‐PU not only possesses an outstanding tensile strength (17.1 MPa), good stretchability (735%) and high toughness (57.16 MJ·m−3), but also exhibits excellent self‐healing performance under mild condition. The healing efficiency of the damaged ASC‐SS‐PU samples (breakage rate >90%) can reach over 70% healing at 60°C for 40 min, which is much lower than conventional ASC‐based PU elastomer. Considering the simple and easy‐to‐scaleup preparation process and commercially available low‐cost raw materials, outstanding mechanical strength and toughness, as well as high healing efficiency under mild condition, the ASC‐SS‐PU elastomer as self‐healing but strong materials have great potential for use in various fields.

In order to address this tradeoff, inspired by the characteristic that small molecules of living organisms self-assemble into large protein molecules by non-covalent interactions, we constructed polyurethane with highly dynamic and strong hard domains composed by the dense hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions between the phenylurea groups at the end of the side chain. The prepared elastomer (PU-HU2-60) exhibits exceptional tensile performance (tensile strength is 18.27 MPa and ultimate elongation is 904.6%) and crack tolerance (fracture energy is 57.78 kJ m-2), surpassing most room temperature self-healing materials. After being damaged, the dynamic change process of hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions enables elastomer a high self-healing efficiency of 92.15% at room temperature. By molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and experiments, we can verify that hydrogen bonds and π-π interactions promote the formation of hard domains and the autonomous self-healing of elastomers. The prepared elastomers can also be recycled and shows ultra-high and restorable adhesion between metals. This work demonstrates a new strategy to balance the mechanical and self-healing properties elastomers to expand their practical application such as metal adhesive.

Abstract:It is highly desirable, although very challenging, to develop self‐healable materials exhibiting both high efficiency in self‐healing and excellent mechanical properties at ambient conditions. Herein, a novel Cu(II)–dimethylglyoxime–urethane‐complex‐based polyurethane elastomer (Cu–DOU–CPU) with synergetic triple dynamic bonds is developed. Cu–DOU–CPU demonstrates the highest reported mechanical performance for self‐healing elastomers at room temperature, with a tensile strength and toughness up to 14.8 MPa and 87.0 MJ m−3, respectively. Meanwhile, the Cu–DOU–CPU spontaneously self‐heals at room temperature with an instant recovered tensile strength of 1.84 MPa and a continuously increased strength up to 13.8 MPa, surpassing the original strength of all other counterparts. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the coordination of Cu(II) plays a critical role in accelerating the reversible dissociation of dimethylglyoxime–urethane, which is important to the excellent performance of the self‐healing elastomer. Application of this technology is demonstrated by a self‐healable and stretchable circuit constructed from Cu–DOU–CPU.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most widely employed silicon-based polymers for its high flexibility, low usage temperature, excellent water resistance, outstanding electrical insulting property, and physiological inert, etc. However, the covalent-bonded SiO bonds are unable to heal automatically when damaged, which would result in the failure of the materials and devices. Disulfide bond based polymers show high healing efficiency at moderate temperature and have been investigated intensively. Herein, we report a PDMS-based polyurethane self-healing polymer (PDMS-PU) modified with disulfide bonds, which exhibited a reinforced thermal stability, excellent stretchability, and satisfactory self-healing ability. The effect of different ratio of PDMS and disulfide bond contents on the elastomer properties was investigated. With the increase of PDMS content, the decomposition temperature of the PDMS-PU-3 (332 degrees C) elastomer with highest content of PDMS was increased by 34 degrees C compared to PDMS-PU-1 (298 degrees C) with lowest content of PDMS and exhibited a largest elongation at break of 1204%. PDMS-PU-1 with highest content of disulfide bond possessed a highest healing efficiency of 97%. The results indicated the PDMS-PU elastomers can be used as self-healing flexible substrate for flexible electronics. (C) 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The long application life and stable performance of stretchable electronics have been putting forward requirements for both higher mechanical properties and better self‐healing ability of polymeric substrates. However, for self‐healing materials, simultaneously improving stretchability and robustness is still challenging. Here, by incorporating sliding crosslinker (polyrotaxanes) and hydrogen bonds into a polymer, a highly stretchable and self‐healable elastomer with good mechanical strength is achieved. The elastomer exhibits very high stretchability, such that it can be stretched to 2800% with a fracture strength of 1.05 MPa. Moreover, the elastomer can achieve nearly complete self‐healing (93%) at 55 °C. Next, tensile tests under different temperatures, step extension experiments, and in situ small angle X‐ray scattering confirm that the excellent stretchability is attributed to the combined effects of sliding cyclodextrins along guest chains and hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, a strain sensor by coating the single‐wall carbon nanotubes onto the surface of the elastic substrate is fabricated.
