Abstract:To identify potential countermeasures for coronavirus disease (COVID-19), we determined the air exchange rates in stationary and moving train cars under various conditions in July, August, and December 2020 in Japan. When the doors were closed, the air exchange rates in both stationary and moving trains increased with increasing area of window-opening (0.23-0.78/h at 0 m2, windows closed to 2.1-10/h at 2.86 m2, fully open). The air exchange rates were one order of magnitude higher when doors were open than when closed. With doors closed, the air exchange rates were higher when the centralized air conditioning (AC) and crossflow fan systems (fan) were on than when off. The air exchange rates in moving trains increased as train speed increased, from 10/h at 20 km/h to 42/h at 57 km/h. Air exchange rates did not differ significantly between empty cars and those filled with 230 mannequins representing commuters. The air exchange rates were lower during aboveground operation than during underground. Assuming that 30-300 passengers travel in a train car for 7-60 min and that the community infection rate is 0.0050-0.30%, we estimated that commuters' infection risk on trains was reduced by 91-94% when all 12 windows were opened (to a height of 10 cm) and the AC/fan was on compared with that when windows were closed and the AC/fan was off.
Experimental studies of particle removal and probability of COVID-19 infection in passenger railcars

Abstract:A series of experiments in stationary and moving passenger railcars was conducted to measure the removal rates of particles in the size ranges of SARS-CoV-2 viral aerosols, and the air changes per hour provided by the existing and modified air handling systems. The effect of ventilation and air filtration systems on removal rates and their effects on estimated probability (i.e., risk) of infection was evaluated in a range of representative conditions: (1) for two different ratios of recirculated air (RA) to outdoor air (OA) (90:10 RA:OA and 67:33 RA:OA); (2) using minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) filters with standard (MERV-8) and increased (MERV-13) filtration ratings; and (3) in the presence and absence of a portable high-efficiency particulate-air (HEPA) room air purifier system operated at clean air delivery rate (CADR) of 150 and 550 cfm. The higher-efficiency MERV-13 filters significantly increased particle removal rates on average by 3.8 to 8.4 hr-1 across particle sizes ranging from 0.3 to 10 µm (p < 0.01) compared to MERV-8 filters. The different RA:OA ratios and the use of a portable HEPA air purifier system had little effect on particle removal rates. MERV-13 filters reduced the estimated probability of infection by 42% compared to the MERV-8 filter. The use of a HEPA-air purifier with a MERV-13 filter causes a 50% reduction in the estimated probability of infection. Upgrading the efficiency of HVAC filters from MERV-8 to MERV-13 in public transit vehicles is the most effective exposure control method resulting in a clear reduction in the removal rates of aerosol particles and the estimated probability of infection.

Abstract:The present manuscript uses an evidence-based approach to review and analyse evidence for the use of human beta interferon in the treatment of MS. Human beta interferon modulates many of the biological processes believed to be involved in MS development. Beta interferon is a member of a large family of secreted proteins that are involved in an organisms defence against viral infections, cell growth regulation and in modulation of immune response. The therapeutic efficacy of beta interferon in relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive MS has been established in several clinical trials, and evidence indicates that the total weekly dosage of beta interferon and/or the frequency of beta interferon administration are important factors in its clinical use. Future therapeutic developments in MS will be fuelled by our increasing understanding of the physical and biological roles of the interferons, in health and in MS pathogenesis.
Energy, economic, and environmental impacts of enhanced ventilation strategies on railway coaches to reduce Covid-19 contagion risks

Abstract:In the last years, the Covid-19 outbreak raised great awareness about ventilation system performance in confined spaces. Specifically, the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system design and operating parameters, such as air change per hour, air recirculation ratio, filtration device performance, and vents location, play a crucial role in reducing the spread of viruses, moulds, bacteria, and general pollutants. Concerning the transport sector, due to the impracticability of social distancing, and the relatively loose requirements of ventilation standards, the SARS-COV-19 outbreak brought a reduction of payload (up to 50%) for different carriers. Specifically, this has been particularly severe for the railway sector, where train coaches are typically characterized by relatively elevated occupancy and high recirculation ratios. In this framework, to improve the Indoor Air Quality and reduce the Covid-19 contagion risk in railway carriages, the present paper investigates the energy, economic and environmental feasibility of diverse ventilation strategies. To do so, a novel dynamic simulation tool for the complete dynamic performance investigation of trains was developed in an OpenStudio environment. To assess the Covid-19 contagion risk connected to the investigated scenarios, the Wells-Riley model has been adopted. To prove the proposed approach's capabilities and show the Covid-19 infection risk reduction potentially achievable by varying the adopted ventilation strategies, a suitable case study related to an existing medium-distance train operating in South/Central Italy is presented. The conducted numerical simulations return interesting results providing also useful design criteria.

Abstract:Ongoing respiratory epidemics are raising health concerns in public transportation environments, especially in densely populated train compartments. While air circulation systems inside these compartments play a crucial role in controlling the risk of droplets carrying pathogens, the mechanisms and strategies have rarely been investigated. This study employs computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to investigate the impacts on droplet dispersion and exposure risk within passenger compartments under two prevalent air circulation modes: centralized return-centralized exhaust (CR-CE) and distributed return-centralized exhaust (DR-CE), as well as a newly proposed mode, distributed return-distributed exhaust (DR-DE). Additionally, other key influential factors, including the release source location and the respiratory jet speed, are also considered. The results indicate that the CR-CE mode exacerbates the longitudinal airflow in the passenger compartment, thereby increasing the distance of droplet transmission. In contrast, the DR-CE mode moderately restricts the range of droplet spread to a certain extent. When the release source is in the middle of the compartment, the average distance of droplet transmission can be reduced by about 30%. The proposed DR-DE mode further confines the behavior of droplet dispersion, significantly lowering the overall exposure risk for passengers. Furthermore, the results show that sneezing, compared to speaking, results in a decrease in the exposure risk peak among passengers, from approximately 95% to around 70%. The passengers in the four rows directly in front of the release source face a relatively high potential risk. These findings provide valuable insights for improving air quality and passenger safety in public transportation vehicles.

Abstract:Narrow and closed spaces like high-speed train cabins are at great risk for airborne infectious disease transmission. With the threat of COVID-19 as well as other potential contagious diseases, it is necessary to protect passengers from infection. Except for the traditional preventions such as increasing ventilation or wearing masks, this paper proposes a novel measurement that optimizes passenger-to-car assignment schemes to reduce the infection risk for high-speed railway passengers. First, we estimated the probability of an infected person boarding the train at any station. Once infectors occur, the non-steady-state Wells–Riley equation is used to model the airborne transmission intercar cabin. The expected number of susceptible passengers infected on the train can be calculated, which is the so-called overall infection risk. The model to minimize overall infection risk, as a pure integer quadratic programming problem, is solved by LINGO software and tested on several scenarios compared with the classical sequential and discrete assignment strategies used in China. The results show that the proposed model can reduce 67.6% and 56.8% of the infection risk in the base case compared to the sequential and discrete assignment, respectively. In other scenarios, the reduction lies mostly between 10% and 90%. The optimized assignment scheme suggests that the cotravel itinerary among passengers from high-risk and low-risk areas should be reduced, as well as passengers with long- and short-distance trips. Sensitivity analysis shows that our model works better when the incidence is higher at downstream or low-flow stations. Increasing the number of cars and car service capacity can also improve the optimization effect. Moreover, the model is applicable to other epidemics since it is insensitive to the Wells–Riley equation parameters. The results can provide a guideline for railway operators during the post-COVID-19 and other epidemic periods.

Abstract:Abstract Background Train is a common mode of public transport across the globe; however, the risk of COVID-19 transmission among individual train passengers remains unclear. Methods We quantified the transmission risk of COVID-19 on high-speed train passengers using data from 2,334 index patients and 72,093 close contacts who had co-travel times of 0–8 hours from 19 December 2019 through 6 March 2020 in China. We analysed the spatial and temporal distribution of COVID-19 transmission among train passengers to elucidate the associations between infection, spatial distance, and co-travel time. Results The attack rate in train passengers on seats within a distance of 3 rows and 5 columns of the index patient varied from 0 to 10.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.3% – 19.0%), with a mean of 0.32% (95%CI 0.29% – 0.37%). Passengers in seats on the same row as the index patient had an average attack rate of 1.5% (95%CI 1.3% – 1.8%), higher than that in other rows (0.14%, 95%CI 0.11% – 0.17%), with a relative risk (RR) of 11.2 (95%CI 8.6 –14.6). Travellers adjacent to the index patient had the highest attack rate (3.5%, 95%CI 2.9% – 4.3%) of COVID-19 infections (RR 18.0, 95%CI 13.9 – 23.4) among all seats. The attack rate decreased with increasing distance, but it increased with increasing co-travel time. The attack rate increased on average by 0.15% (p = 0.005) per hour of co-travel; for passengers at adjacent seats, this increase was 1.3% (p = 0.008), the highest among all seats considered. Conclusions COVID-19 has a high transmission risk among train passengers, but this risk shows significant differences with co-travel time and seat location. During disease outbreaks, when travelling on public transportation in confined spaces such as trains, measures should be taken to reduce the risk of transmission, including increasing seat distance, reducing passenger density, and use of personal hygiene protection.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency of understanding virus transmission dynamics, particularly in indoor environments characterized by high occupancy and suboptimal ventilation systems. Airborne transmission, recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), poses a significant risk, influenced by various factors, including contact duration, individual susceptibility, and environmental conditions. Respiratory particles play a pivotal role in viral spread, remaining suspended in the air for varying durations and distances. Experimental studies provide insights into particle dispersion characteristics, especially in indoor environments where ventilation systems may be inadequate. However, experimental challenges necessitate complementary numerical modeling approaches. Zero-dimensional models offer simplified estimations but lack spatial and temporal resolution, whereas Computational Fluid Dynamics, particularly with the Discrete Phase Model, overcomes these limitations by simulating airflow and particle dispersion comprehensively. This paper employs CFD-DPM to simulate airflow and particle dispersion in a coach bus, offering insights into virus transmission dynamics. This study evaluates the COVID-19 risk of infection for vulnerable individuals sharing space with an infected passenger and investigates the efficacy of personal ventilation in reducing infection risk. Indeed, the CFD simulations revealed the crucial role of ventilation systems in reducing COVID-19 transmission risk within coach buses: increasing clean airflow rate and implementing personal ventilation significantly decreased particle concentration. Overall, infection risk was negligible for scenarios involving only breathing but significant for prolonged exposure to a speaking infected individual. The findings contribute to understanding infection risk in public transportation, emphasizing the need for optimal ventilation strategies to ensure passenger safety and mitigate virus transmission.

Abstract:Aerosols carrying the virus inside enclosed spaces is an important mode of transmission for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), as supported by growing evidence. Urban subways are one of the most frequented enclosed spaces. The subway is a utilitarian and low-cost transit system in modern society. However, studies are yet to demonstrate patterns of viral transmission in subway heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. To fill this gap, we performed a computational investigation of the airflow (and associated aerosol transmission) in an urban subway cabin equipped with an HVAC system. We employed a transport equation for aerosol concentration, which was added to the basic buoyant solver to resolve the aerosol transmission inside the subway cabin. This was achieved by considering the thermal, turbulent, and induced ventilation flow effects. Using the probability of encountering aerosols on sampling surfaces crossing the passenger breathing zones, we detected the highest infection risk zones inside the urban subway under different settings. We proposed a novel HVAC system that can impede aerosol spread, both vertically and horizontally, inside the cabin. In the conventional model, the maximum probability of encountering aerosols from the breathing of infected individuals near the fresh-air ducts was equal to 51.2%. This decreased to 3.5% in the proposed HVAC model. Overall, using the proposed HVAC system for urban subways led to a decrease in the mean value of the probability of encountering the aerosol by approximately 84% compared with that of the conventional system.

Abstract:In this paper the risk of infection from SARS-CoV-2 Delta variant of passengers sharing a car cabin with an infected subject for a 30-min journey is estimated through an integrated approach combining a recently developed predictive emission-to-risk approach and a validated CFD numerical model numerically solved using the open-source OpenFOAM software. Different scenarios were investigated to evaluate the effect of the infected subject position within the car cabin, the air flow rate of the HVAC system, the HVAC ventilation mode, and the expiratory activity (breathing vs. speaking). The numerical simulations here performed reveal that the risk of infection is strongly influenced by several key parameter: as an example, under the same ventilation mode and emitting scenario, the risk of infection ranges from zero to roughly 50% as a function of the HVAC flow rate. The results obtained also demonstrate that: (i) simplified zero-dimensional approaches limit proper evaluation of the risk in such confined spaces, conversely, (ii) CFD approaches are needed to investigate the complex fluid-dynamics in similar indoor environments, and, thus, (iii) the risk of infection in indoor environments characterized by fixed seats can be in principle controlled by properly designing the flow patterns of the environment.

Abstract:Abstract With the current outbreak of SARS-CoV-2, public transportation is a key area which must be investigated to ensure both passenger safety and efficiency of passenger transport to best serve the community and reduce environmental footprint. In this paper, the transport of the SARS-CoV-2 virus through human respiratory particles is examined using transient Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations to determine the impacts different ventilation configurations on the probability of viral exposure. The motion of the viral particles was simulated first by solving for the flow field inside the bus using a proprietary Navier-Stokes finite-volume solver, RavenCFD by Corvid Technologies, and then using Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) post processing techniques. The LPT methods used allowed for the injection of respiratory particles, according to distributions found in literature, which included sneezing, coughing, and speaking. To fully investigate the problem space the moving bus was modeled with the windows in various states of closure and with various HVAC configurations. In all scenarios, a volumetric Viral Mean Exposure Time (VMET), which considers the viral load calculations, was used to quantify the various exposure risk of all passengers on the bus. It was found that the most efficient ventilation system on a public transport bus was to keep the windows closed and HVAC of main cabin at maximum to minimize the viral exposure within the bus.
Numerical Investigation of Airborne Transmission of Respiratory Infections on the Subway Platform

Abstract:Underground subway platforms are among the world’s busiest public transportation systems, but the airborne transmission mechanism of respiratory infections on these platforms has been rarely studied. Here,computational fluid dynamics（CFD） modeling is used to investigate the airflow patterns and infection risks in an island platform under two common ventilation modes: Mode 1-both sides have air inlets and outlets; Mode 2-air inlets are present at the two sides and outlets are present in the middle.Under the investigated scenario, airflow structure is characterized by the ventilation jet and human thermal plumes. Their interaction with the infector’s breathing jet imposes the front passenger under the highest exposure risk by short-range airborne route, with intake fractions up to 2.57%（oral breathing）or 0.63%（nasal breathing） under Mode 1; oral breathing of the infector may impose higher risks for the front passenger compared with nasal breathing. Pathogen are efficiently diluted as they travel further,in particular to adjacent crowds. The maximum and median value of intake fractions of passengers in adjacent crowds are respectively 0.093% and 0.016%（oral breathing）, and 0.073% and 0.014%（nasal breathing） under Mode 1. Compared with Mode 1, the 2nd mode minimizes the interaction of ventilation jet and breathing jet, where the maximum intake fraction is only 0.34%, and the median value in the same crowd and other crowds are reduced by 23–63%. Combining published quanta generation rate data of COVID-19 and influenza infectors, the predicted maximum and median infection risks for passengers in the same crowds are respectively 1.46%–40.23% and 0.038%–1.67% during the 3–10 min waiting period, which are more sensitive to ventilation rate and exposure time compared with return air. This study can provide practical guidance for the prevention of respiratory infections in subway platforms.

Abstract:Subway carriages are enclosed for extended periods of time, with a high density of passengers. Providing a safe, healthy, and comfortable cabin environment is a great challenge, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. An increase in ventilation rate can potentially reduce infection probability, which may result in worsening environmental quality (e.g., thermal comfort) and larger energy consumption. Thus, exploring the trade-off among infection risk, environmental quality (with regard to ventilation, thermal comfort, and air quality), and energy consumption is important to optimize ventilation systems for carriages. The effect of different supply air parameters (e.g., velocity and temperature) and ventilation modes of mixing ventilation (MV) & Supply air from the Floor and Return air from the Ceiling (SFRC) was studied. The questionnaires were analyzed to explore passenger dissatisfaction with the carriage environment using a MV system. Simulations were performed to predict the velocity, temperature, and CO2 concentration fields. In addition, the comprehensive benefit was evaluated by analytic hierarchy process (AHP), based on infection probability from the revisited Wells-Riley equation, Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI), Predicted Mean Vote (PMV), Pollutant Removal Effectiveness (PRE) and energy consumption estimated by cooling load (Lcool). Compared with MV, the optimized SFRC provided softer draft sensation and decreased CO2 concentration by 42%. The SFRC achieved better comprehensive benefits, with an infection risk reduced to 0.4%, ADPI of 80%, PMV approaching zero, PRE up to 16, and energy efficiency increased by 30%. This work contributes to the optimal design of subway carriage ventilation systems in the post-epidemic era.
Multi-scale risk assessment and mitigations comparison for COVID-19 in urban public transport: A combined field measurement and modeling approach

Abstract:The outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has caused an unparalleled disruption to daily life. Given that COVID-19 primarily spreads in densely populated indoor areas, urban public transport (UPT) systems pose significant risks. This study presents an analysis of the air change rate in buses, subways, and high speed trains based on measured CO 2 concentrations and passenger behaviors. The resulting values were used as inputs for an infection risk assessment model, which was used to quantitatively evaluate the effects of various factors, including ventilation rates, respiratory activities, and viral variants, on the infection risk. The findings demonstrate that ventilation has a negligible impact on reducing average risks (less than 10.0%) for short-range scales, but can result in a reduction of average risks by 32.1%–57.4% for room scales. When all passengers wear masks, the average risk reduction ranges from 4.5-folds to 7.5-folds. Based on our analysis, the average total reproduction numbers ( R ) of subways are 1.4-folds higher than buses, and 2-folds higher than high speed trains. Additionally, it is important to note that the Omicron variant may result in a much higher R value, estimated to be approximately 4.9-folds higher than the Delta variant. To reduce disease transmission, it is important to keep the R value below 1. Thus, two indices have been proposed: time-scale based exposure thresholds and spatial-scale based upper limit warnings. Mask wearing provides the greatest protection against infection in the face of long exposure duration to the omicron epidemic.

Abstract:Airborne respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 pose significant challenges to public transportation. Several recent outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 indicate the high risk of transmission among passengers on public buses if special precautions are not taken. This study presents a combined experimental and numerical analysis to identify transmission mechanisms on an urban bus and assess strategies to reduce risk. The effects of the ventilation and air-conditioning systems, opening windows and doors, and wearing masks are analyzed. Specific attention is paid to the transport of submicron- and micron-sized particles relevant to typical respiratory droplets. High-resolution instrumentation was used to measure size distribution and aerosol response time on a campus bus of the University of Michigan under these different conditions. Computational fluid dynamics was employed to measure the airflow within the bus and evaluate risk. A risk metric was adopted based on the number of particles exposed to susceptible passengers. The flow that carries these aerosols is predominantly controlled by the ventilation system, which acts to uniformly distribute the aerosol concentration throughout the bus while simultaneously diluting it with fresh air. The opening of doors and windows was found to reduce the concentration by approximately one half, albeit its benefit does not uniformly impact all passengers on the bus due to the recirculation of airflow caused by entrainment through windows. Finally, it was found that well fitted surgical masks, when worn by both infected and susceptible passengers, can nearly eliminate the transmission of the disease.

Abstract:As COVID-19 continues to spread, infection risk on public transport is concerning. Air exchange rates (ACH) and advection-diffusion of CO2 and particles were determined in a route bus to evaluate the infection risk. ACH increased with bus speed whether windows were open or closed, and ACH were greater when more windows were open. With two open windows, ACH was greater when a front and rear window were open than when two rear windows were open. With both front and rear ventilation fans set to exhaust, ACH was more than double that when both were set to supply. With air conditioning (AC) off, CO2 and particles spread proportionally at the same rate from a source, whereas with the AC on, the spread rate of particles was about half that of CO2 , because particles might be trapped by a prefilter on the AC unit. Infection risk can be reduced by equipping AC unit with an appropriate filter. Calculations with a modified Wells-Riley equation showed that average infection risk was reduced by 92% in the moving bus with windows open comparing to with windows closed. When the bus was moving with windows closed, exhaust fan operation reduced the average risk by 35%.

Abstract:The air distribution system in an airliner plays a key role in maintaining a comfortable and healthy environment in the aircraft cabin. To evaluate the performance of a novel displacement ventilation (DV) system and a traditional mixing ventilation (MV) system in an airliner cabin, this study conducted experiments and simulations in a seven-row cabin mockup. This investigation used ultrasonic anemometers and T-thermocouples to measure the air velocity, temperature and distribution of 1 μm and 5 μm particles. Simulation verifications were performed for these operating conditions, and additional scenarios with different occurrence source locations were also simulated. This study combined the Wells-Riley equation with a real case based on a COVID-19 outbreak among passengers on a long-distance bus to obtain the COVID-19 quanta value. Through an evaluation of the airflow organization, thermal comfort, and risk of COVID-19 infection, the two ventilation systems were compared. This investigation found that polydisperse particles should be used to calculate the risk of infection in airliner cabins. In addition, at the beginning of the pandemic, the infection risk with DV was lower than that with MV. In the middle and late stages of the epidemic, the infection risk with MV can be reduced when passengers wear masks, leading to an infection risk approximately equal to that of DV.

Abstract:A novel molecular photocatalytic system with not only high reduction ability of CO2 but also high capture ability of CO2 has been developed using a Ru(II)-Re(I) dinuclear complex as a photocatalyst. By using this photocatalytic system, CO2 of 10% concentration could be selectively converted to CO with almost same photocatalysis to that under a pure CO2 atmosphere (TONCO > 1000, ΦCO > 0.4). Even 0.5% concentration of CO2 was reduced with 60% initial efficiency of CO formation by using the same system compared to that using pure CO2 (TONCO > 200). The Re(I) catalyst unit in the photocatalyst can efficiently capture CO2, which proceeds CO2 insertion to the Re-O bond, and then reduce the captured CO2 by using an electron supplied from the photochemically reduced Ru photosensitizer unit.
