Abstract:The manufacture of 3D mesostructures is receiving rapidly increasing attention, because of the fundamental significance and practical applications across wide-ranging areas. The recently developed approach of buckling-guided assembly allows deterministic formation of complex 3D mesostructures in a broad set of functional materials, with feature sizes spanning nanoscale to centimeter-scale. Previous studies mostly exploited mechanically controlled assembly platforms using elastomer substrates, which limits the capabilities to achieve on-demand local assembly, and to reshape assembled mesostructures into distinct 3D configurations. This work introduces a set of design concepts and assembly strategies to utilize dielectric elastomer actuators as powerful platforms for the electro-mechanically controlled 3D assembly. Capabilities of sequential, local loading with desired strain distributions allow access to precisely tailored 3D mesostructures that can be reshaped into distinct geometries, as demonstrated by experimental and theoretical studies of ∼30 examples. A reconfigurable inductive-capacitive radio-frequency circuit consisting of morphable 3D capacitors serves as an application example.

Abstract:The dense interfacial assembly of phytic acid/sulfonated polyaniline (PA/S‐PANI) complexes at oil–water interfaces greatly increase the conductive nature of the thin films forms at the interface. PA/S‐PANI inks are 3D printed into liquid threads such that liquid circuits can be fabricated into series and parallel circuits which can be repaired to pristine conditions or reconfigured into new circuits using an electric field. The advance of printed electronics is significantly bolstered by the development of liquid‐state electronics that overcome the inherent limitations in flexibility and reconfigurability of solid‐state electronics. By integrating the biocompatibility and conductivity of sulfonated polyaniline (S‐PANI) and phytic acid (PA) with the reconfigurability of structured liquids, highly conductive all‐liquid threads are developed. The dense packing and overlap of PA/S‐PANI complexes at an oil/water interface promotes in‐plane electron transport, and standard four‐point probe measurements of PA/S‐PANI interfacial assemblies demonstrate enhanced electrical properties. Notably, the rapid jetting of the ink phase into the matrix phase allows for liquid threads to be printed, enabling the fabrication of large‐scale, conductive pathways between two electrodes and liquid circuits. Upon mechanical cleavage of the liquid wires, circuits can be broken, but will easily self‐repair using an electric field, making this motif useful in the design of switches as well as restoring conductive pathways in series or in parallel. The demonstrated flexibility and reconfigurability these PA/S‐PANI wires possess hold significant promise for their practical use in the design of flexible and adaptive bioelectronics that can be repaired on demand, signifying a transformative step in the evolution of liquid electronic materials.

Abstract:In the September 1994 issue of theArchives, Dr Saran and colleagues 1 reported the association of acute hypopyon uveitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) who had been treated for systemic Mycobacterium avium complex infection with rifabutin. Other investigators 2-4 have also noted an association of uveitis with rifabutin use in their patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. In this country, rifabutin has been approved for only a handful of uses, such as the prophylactic treatment for disseminated M avium complex infections in patients with advanced AIDS. Other approved uses for this drug include treatment of refractory cases of pulmonary tuberculosis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Abstract:Abstract Conventional electronic manufacturers are generally not easily accessible due to complicated procedures, time, material and energy consuming, and may generate potential pollution to the environment. From an alternative, liquid metal printed electronics to quickly fabricate electronic circuits and functional devices were proposed a decade before. To promote the further development and application of liquid metal printed electronics, this review aims to summarize and analyze the progress of liquid metal printed electronics from three aspects, namely electronic inks, printing technology and applications. Then, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities for further development of liquid metal printed electronics from several aspects including material modification, technological innovation, equipment upgrading and potential applications. It is expected that liquid metal printed electronics allow one to make electronics at anytime, anywhere at low cost which indicates the coming of a new era of ubiquitous electrical engineering.

Abstract:Liquid-fluid interfaces provide a platform both for structuring liquids into complex shapes and assembling dimensionally confined, functional nanomaterials. Historically, attention in this area has focused on simple emulsions and foams, in which surface-active materials such as surfactants or colloids stabilize structures against coalescence and alter the mechanical properties of the interface. In recent decades, however, a growing body of work has begun to demonstrate the full potential of the assembly of nanomaterials at liquid-fluid interfaces to generate functionally advanced, biomimetic systems. Here, a broad overview is given, from fundamentals to applications, of the use of liquid-fluid interfaces to generate complex, all-liquid devices with a myriad of potential applications.

Abstract:Managing the mechanical mismatch between hard semiconductor components and soft biological tissues represents a key challenge in the development of advanced forms of wearable electronic devices. An ultralow modulus material or a liquid that surrounds the electronics and resides in a thin elastomeric shell provides a strain-isolation effect that enhances not only the wearability but also the range of stretchability in suitably designed devices. The results presented here build on these concepts by (1) replacing traditional liquids explored in the past, which have some nonnegligible vapor pressure and finite permeability through the encapsulating elastomers, with ionic liquids to eliminate any possibility for leakage or evaporation, and (2) positioning the liquid between the electronics and the skin, within an enclosed, elastomeric microfluidic space, but not in direct contact with the active elements of the system, to avoid any negative consequences on electronic performance. Combined experimental and theoretical results establish the strain-isolating effects of this system, and the considerations that dictate mechanical collapse of the fluid-filled cavity. Examples in skin-mounted wearable include wireless sensors for measuring temperature and wired systems for recording mechano-acoustic responses.
Self-healing liquid metal composite for reconfigurable and recyclable soft electronics

Abstract:Abstract Soft electronics and robotics are in increasing demand for diverse applications. However, soft devices typically lack rigid enclosures which can increase their susceptibility to damage and lead to failure and premature disposal. This creates a need for soft and stretchable functional materials with resilient and regenerative properties. Here we show a liquid metal-elastomer-plasticizer composite for soft electronics with robust circuitry that is self-healing, reconfigurable, and ultimately recyclable. This is achieved through an embossing technique for on-demand formation of conductive liquid metal networks which can be reprocessed to rewire or completely recycle the soft electronic composite. These skin-like electronics stretch to 1200% strain with minimal change in electrical resistance, sustain numerous damage events under load without losing electrical conductivity, and are recycled to generate new devices at the end of life. These soft composites with adaptive liquid metal microstructures can find broad use for soft electronics and robotics with improved lifetime and recyclability.

Abstract:Liquid metal (LM)-based elastomers have a demonstrated value in flexible electronics. Attempts in this area include the development of multifunctional LM-based elastomers with controllable morphology, superior mechanical performances, and great stability. Herein, inspired by the working principle of electric toothbrushes, a revolving microfluidic system is presented for the generation of LM droplets and construction of desired elastomers. The system involves revolving modules assembled by a needles array and 3D microfluidic channels. LM droplets can be generated with controllable size in a high-throughput manner due to the revolving motion-derived drag force. It is demonstrated that by employing a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) matrix as the collection phase, the generated LM droplets can act as conductive fillers for the construction of flexible electronics directly. The resultant LM droplets-based elastomers exhibit high mechanical strength, stable electrical performance, as well as superior self-healing property benefiting from the dynamic exchangeable urea bond of the polymer matrix. Notably, due to the flexible programmable feature of the LM droplets embedded within the elastomers, various patterned LM droplets-based elastomers can be easily achieved. These results indicate that the proposed microfluidic LM droplets-based elastomers have a great potential for promoting the development of flexible electronics.

Abstract:Gallium‐based liquid metal alloys (GaLMAs) are a unique class of advanced materials with the potential to offer unprecedented opportunities in stretchable and reconfigurable electronics. Despite their promise, the development of liquid metal electronics must overcome several challenges for widespread application. In particular, stable electrical contacts have been identified as a critical challenge for the integration of GaLMAs in electronic circuits and systems. Since gallium alloys rapidly with most metals, GaLMAs lead to unstable or mechanically sensitive interfaces when combined with metal electrodes or interconnects, thereby preventing the reliable integration of eutectic gallium‐indium (eGaIn) functionality with conventional electronics. Here, printed graphene is demonstrated as a reliable and high‐performance interfacial layer to enable electrical connections to eGaIn. A thin film (≈100 nm) of graphene printed between conventional silver leads and eGaIn acts as a physical barrier, effectively passivating the surface against alloying while retaining the ability to conduct current across the interface. Moreover, graphene interfacial contacts offer excellent durability, with thermal stability to 300 °C, robust tolerance to mechanical bending, and chemical inertness. By leveraging this unique strategy to stabilize liquid metal contacts, a reconfigurable liquid metal electrical switch is fabricated with significantly improved longevity. Robust electrical contacts to liquid metal are demonstrated using printable graphene inks. A thin film of graphene effectively suppresses alloy formation between eutectic gallium‐indium and silver, enabling reliable electrical junctions with thermal, mechanical, and chemical stability. Detailed optimization and characterization of this strategy is leveraged to enable a reconfigurable liquid metal electrical switch operating in 2 m HCl.

Reconfigurability-Encoded Hierarchical Rectifiers for Versatile 3D Liquid Manipulation

Abstract:Manipulating small-volume liquids is crucial in natural processes and industrial applications. However, most liquid manipulation technologies involve complex energy inputs or non-adjustable wetting gradient surfaces. Here, a simple and adjustable 3D liquid manipulation paradigm is reported to control liquid behaviors by coupling liquid-air-solid interfacial energy with programmable magnetic fields. This paradigm centers around a hierarchical rectifier with magnetized microratchets, using Laplace pressure asymmetry to enable multimodal directional steering of various surface tension liquids (23-72 mN m-1). The scale-dependent effect in microratchet design shows its superiority in handling small-volume liquids across three orders of magnitude (100-103 µL). Under programmed magnetic fields, the rectifier can reconfigure its morphology to harness interfacial energy to exhibit richer liquid behaviors without dynamic real-time control. Reconfigured rectifiers show improved rectification performance in the inertia-dominant fluid regime, i.e., a remarkable 2000-fold increase in the critical Weber number for pure ethanol. Moreover, the rectifier's switchable reconfigurations offer flexible control over liquid transport directions and spatiotemporally controllable 3D liquid manipulation reminiscent of inchworm motions. This scalable liquid manipulation paradigm promotes versatile engineering and biochemistry applications, e.g., portable liquid purity testing (screening resolution <1 mN m-1), logical open-channel microfluidics, and automated chemical reaction platforms.

Abstract:Electronics that are capable of destroying themselves, on demand and in a harmless way, might provide the ultimate form of data security. This paper presents materials and device architectures for triggered destruction of conventional microelectronic systems by means of microfluidic chemical etching of the constituent materials, including silicon, silicon dioxide, and metals (e.g., aluminum). Demonstrations in an array of home-built metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors that exploit ultrathin sheets of monocrystalline silicon and in radio-frequency identification devices illustrate the utility of the approaches.

Abstract:Conventional electrical circuits are generally rigid in their components and working styles which are not flexible and stretchable. From an alternative, liquid metal based soft electronics is offering important opportunities for innovating modern bioelectronics and electrical engineering. However, its running in wet environments such as aqueous solution, biological tissues or allied subjects still encounters many technical challenges. Here, we proposed a new conceptual electrical circuit, termed as droplet circuits, to fulfill the special needs as raised in the above mentioned areas. Such unconventional circuits are immersed in solution and composed of liquid metal droplets, conductive ions or wires such as carbon nanotubes. With specifically designed topological or directional structures/patterns, the liquid metal droplets composing the circuit can be discretely existing and disconnected from each other, while achieving the function of electron transport through conductive routes or quantum tunneling effect. The conductive wires serve as the electron transfer stations when the distance between two separate liquid metal droplets is far beyond than that quantum tunneling effects can support. The unique advantage of the current droplet circuit lies in that it allows parallel electron transport, high flexibility, self-healing, regulativity and multi-point connectivity, without needing to worry about circuit break. This would extend the category of classical electrical circuits into the newly emerging areas like realizing room temperature quantum computing, making brain-like intelligence or nerve-machine interface electronics etc. The mechanisms and potential scientific issues of the droplet circuits are interpreted. Future prospects along this direction are outlined.

Abstract:Abstract Living in the global-changing era, intelligent and eco-friendly electronic components that can sense the environment and recycle or reprogram when needed are essential for sustainable development. Compared with solid-state electronics, composite hydrogels with multi-functionalities are promising candidates. By bridging the self-assembly of azobenzene-containing supramolecular complexes and MXene nanosheets, we fabricate a MXene-based composite gel, namely MXenegel, with reversible photo-modulated phase behavior. The MXenegel can undergo reversible liquefication and solidification under UV and visible light irradiations, respectively, while maintaining its conductive nature unchanged, which can be integrated into traditional solid-state circuits. The strategy presented in this work provides an example of light-responsive conducting material via supramolecular bridging and demonstrates an exciting platform for functional soft electronics.

Abstract:In light of recent advancements in gallium‐based liquid metal droplets (LMDs)‐based electronics, this review outlines their unique properties, various preparation methods, and recent applications. Furthermore, existing challenges and future directions are discussed in this promising field. Liquid metals, particularly non‐toxic gallium‐based alloys, have emerged as promising materials for future soft electronics due to their unique properties, including fluidity, excellent electrical and thermal conductivities, and surface reactivity. They demonstrate adaptability, responsivity, and self‐healing abilities, offering a platform for innovative electronic devices. Embodied in a droplet form factor, gallium‐based liquid metal droplets (LMDs) combine the traits of liquid metals with the advantages of miniaturized structures, including high surface tension, high surface area, high mobility, and surface functionalization. This review discusses the inherent properties of LMDs, which have driven substantial research interest across various fields, such as sensors, robotics, electronic circuits, energy harvesters, drug delivery, and microfluidics systems, among others. Effective fabrication and processing techniques are detailed for LMDs, illustrating their role in applications previously challenging with conventional materials, such as reconfigurable, self‐healing, and transient electronics. Existing challenges and future directions in this growing field are discussed. This extensive review seeks to further the understanding of LMDs and their potential, offering a roadmap for their journey from a niche interest to a key material in various electronic devices.

Abstract:A facile and low‐cost strategy to fabricate flexible and robust yet transient soft electronics based on the combination of liquid metal and gelatin biogels is introduced. The gelatin biogel–liquid metal composite features stretchability and mechanical resilience, while one is able to disassemble devices made by the composite within seconds. Such features enable degradable and recyclable electronics such as touch sensors and strain sensors. Transient electronics with degradability or dissolvability on demand possess remarkable characteristics for wearable, bioelectronic, and implanted electronic devices. While synthetic materials have made significant progress in degradability and stretchability, they suffer from intrinsic limitations, including low degradation rates, poor mechanical compliance, and high production cost, which restrict the growth of transient electronic devices. Herein, a versatile fabrication strategy is presented for transient electronics that combine a resilient biopolymer substrate (gelatin biogels) with liquid metal (Galinstan). The circuits made from gelatin biogel‐based and liquid metal are mechanically resilient and durable, exhibiting good compliance with irregular and deformable surfaces, and thus can withstand long‐term exposure to dynamic deformation (about 60 000 cycles at a strain of 50%). More importantly, gelatin biogels are naturally derived and endowed with thermally reversible gelling, which enables on‐demand rapid dissolution and recycling of the materials. As a proof‐of‐concept, transient circuit‐based capacitive sensors, which can be degraded within 20 s, are fabricated for monitoring finger touching, morse code generation, and electrical touchpad. Such a strategy provides a guideline for designing transient electronics with a combination of biopolymer gels and liquid metal, and this approach is anticipated to find applications in human–machine interfaces and wearable devices.

Abstract:The application of three-dimensional common electronics that can be directly pasted on arbitrary surfaces in the fields of human health monitoring, intelligent robots and wearable electronic devices has aroused people's interest, especially in achieving stable adhesion of electronic devices on biological dynamic three-dimensional interfaces and high-quality signal acquisition. In recent years, liquid metal (LM) materials have been widely used in the manufacture of flexible sensors and wearable electronic devices because of their excellent tensile properties and electrical conductivity at room temperature. In addition, LM has good biocompatibility and can be used in a variety of biomedical applications. Here, the recent development of LM flexible electronic printing methods for the fabrication of three-dimensional conformal electronic devices on the surface of human tissue is discussed. These printing methods attach LM to the deformable substrate in the form of bulk or micro-nano particles, so that electronic devices can adapt to the deformation of human tissue and other three-dimensional surfaces, and maintain stable electrical properties. Representative examples of applications such as self-healing devices, degradable devices, flexible hybrid electronic devices, variable stiffness devices and multi-layer large area circuits are reviewed. The current challenges and prospects for further development are also discussed.

Abstract:Room-temperature liquid metal GaIn25 (Eutectic Gallium Indium alloy, 75% gallium and 25% indium) has distinctive properties of reversible deformation and controllable locomotion under an external electric field stimulus. Liquid metal's newly discovered properties imply great possibilities in developing new technique for interface design. In this paper, we present LIME, LIquid MEtal interfaces for non-rigid interaction. We first discuss the interaction potential of LIME interfaces. Then we introduce the development of LIME cells and the design of some LIME widgets.
