Abstract:This paper proposes a longitudinal platoon controller for connected vehicles (CVs) by considering the information of multiple preceding vehicles and the car-following interactions between CVs. The stability of the proposed controller is analyzed using the Routh criterion. For the verification, we develop an integrated platoon control framework for CVs in a V2V/V2I communication environment. The proposed framework consists of two main components: simulation platform and experimental platform. In particular, the simulation platform is developed based on the TransModeler software, and the experimental platform is designed using the self-developed V2X devices. Finally, a scenario of platoon forming is taken as an example and is conducted in simulation platform and experimental platform, respectively. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller with respect to the trajectory and velocity profiles.
Adaptive Vehicle Platooning with Joint Network-Traffic Approach

Abstract:The Intelligent Transportation System has become one of the most globally researched topics, with Connected and Autonomous Vehicles(CAV) at its core. The CAV applications can be improved by the study of vehicle platooning immune to real-time traffic and vehicular network losses. In this work, we explore the need to integrate the Network model and Platooning system model for highway environments. The proposed platoon model is designed to be adaptive in length, providing the node vehicles to merge and exit. This overcomes the assumption that all the platoon nodes should have a common source and destination. The challenges of the existing platoon model, such as relay selection, acceleration threshold, are addressed for highly modular platoon design. The presented algorithm for merge and exit events optimizes the trade-off between network parameters such as communication range and vehicle dynamic parameters such as velocity and acceleration threshold. It considers the network bounds like SINR and link stability and vehicle trajectory parameters like the duration of the vehicle in the platoon. This optimizes the traffic throughput while maintaining stability using the PID controller. The work tries to increase the vehicle inclusion time in the platoon while preserving the overall traffic throuahput.

Abstract:Abstract In intelligent vehicular networks, vehicles have enhanced sensing capabilities and carry computing and communication platforms to enable new versatile systems known as Vehicular Communication (VC) systems. Vehicles communicate with other vehicles and with nearby fixed equipment to support different applications, including those which increase driver awareness of the surroundings. This should result in improved safety and may optimize traffic. However, VC systems are vulnerable to cyber attacks involving message manipulation. Research aimed at tackling this problem has resulted in the proposal of multiple authentication protocols. Several existing survey papers have attempted to classify some of these protocols based on a limited set of characteristics. However, to date there is no generic framework to support the comparison of these protocols and provide guidance for design and evaluation. Most existing classifications either use computation complexity of cryptographic techniques as a criterion, or they fail to make connections between different important aspects of authentication. This paper provides such a framework, proposing a new taxonomy to enable a consistent means of classifying authentication schemes based upon seven main criteria. The main contribution of this study is a framework to enable protocol designers and investigators to adequately compare and select authentication schemes when deciding on particular protocols to implement in an application. Our framework can be applied in design, making choices appropriate for the intended context in both intra-vehicle and inter-vehicle communications. We demonstrate the application of our framework using two different types of case study: individual analysis and hypothetical design. Additionally, this work makes several related contributions. We present the network model, outline the applications, list the communication patterns and the underlying standards, and discuss the necessity of using cryptography and key management in VC systems. We also review the threats, authentication, and privacy requirements in vehicular networks.

Abstract:Autonomous vehicle platooning promises many benefits such as fuel efficiency, road safety, reduced traffic congestion, and passenger comfort. Platooning vehicles travel in a single file, in close distance, and at the same velocity. The platoon formation is autonomously maintained by a Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) system which relies on sensory data and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. In fact, V2V messages play a critical role in shortening the platooning distance while maintaining safety. Whereas V2V message integrity and source authentication can be verified via cryptographic methods, establishing the truthfulness of the message contents is a much harder task. This work establishes a physical access control mechanism to restrict V2V messages to platooning members. Specifically, we aim at tying the digital identity of a candidate requesting to join a platoon to its physical trajectory relative to the platoon. We propose the {\em Wiggle} protocol that employs a physical challenge-response exchange to prove that a candidate requesting to be admitted into a platoon actually follows it. The protocol name is inspired by the random longitudinal movements that the candidate is challenged to execute. {\em Wiggle} prevents any remote adversary from joining the platoon and injecting fake CACC messages. Compared to prior works, {\em Wiggle} is resistant to pre-recording attacks and can verify that the candidate is directly behind the verifier at the same lane.
Secure Vehicular Platoon Management against Sybil Attacks

Abstract:The capacity of highways has been an ever-present constraint in the 21st century, bringing about the issue of safety with greater likelihoods of traffic accidents occurring. Furthermore, recent global oil prices have inflated to record levels. A potential solution lies in vehicular platooning, which has been garnering attention, but its deployment is uncommon due to cyber security concerns. One particular concern is a Sybil attack, by which the admission of fake virtual vehicles into the platoon allows malicious actors to wreak havoc on the platoon itself. In this paper, we propose a secure management scheme for platoons that can protect major events that occur in the platoon operations against Sybil attacks. Both vehicle identity and message exchanged are authenticated by adopting key exchange, digital signature and encryption schemes based on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC). Noteworthy features of the scheme include providing perfect forward secrecy and both group forward and backward secrecy to preserve the privacy of vehicles and platoons. Typical malicious attacks such as replay and man-in-the-middle attacks for example can also be resisted. A formal evaluation of the security functionality of the scheme by the Canetti-Krawczyk (CK) adversary and the random oracle model as well as a brief computational verification by CryptoVerif were conducted. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme was evaluated to show its time and space efficiency.

Abstract:In response to the escalating challenges posed by traffic bottlenecks, accidents, and intersection delays, the deployment of platooning mechanisms emerges as an imperative remedy. This investigation revolves around a pivotal scenario wherein a closely-knit platoon of cooperative vehicles approaches an intersection. Orchestrated by a lead vehicle, this convoy navigates the traffic light to expedite the journey of its followers towards their respective destinations. However, given that the size of the platoon can be increased, it will become difficult for the leader to manage it smoothly. Therefore, dividing the platoon into small groups led by co-leaders who deal directly with the leader is considered an ideal solution to speed up and facilitate the process of maintaining platoon stability. In this paper, we propose a Cooperative Adaptive Platooning Control Algorithm (CAPCA) for the hybrid communication topology in platooning. In fact, CAPCA aims to achieve stability in the platoon by distributing tasks in a parallel manner to mini-platoons. Moreover, inherent complexities arise as select members within the platoon strive to undermine its stability. Within this context, the research addresses the intricacies of Vehicle Platooning Disruption (VPD) attacks, a menacing phenomenon characterized by deliberate efforts to destabilize or seize control of a platoon. These attacks manifest through tactics such as false data injection (FDI) and replaying of control messages. In response, a robust and multifaceted countermeasure is conceptualized. The Vehicle Platooning Disruption Attacks Detection Protocol (VPD-ADP) takes center stage as a foundational component. By identifying instability within the platoon's dynamics model, VPD-ADP lays the essential groundwork for mitigating the repercussions of FDI and replay attacks. Employing advanced stochastic time series analysis, the impact of VPD attacks is scrutinized via anomalies in the Cartesian coordinates of vehicles deviations from the trajectory anticipated by the platoon. Moreover, the study introduces the Reputation-based Reliable Mitigation Protocol (RRMP), a pioneering approach that leverages collaborative data gleaned from neighboring vehicles. RRMP is devised to assess the veracity of received messages and gauge their reliability in real-time. Through extensive simulations and experiments, the proposed approach's effectiveness in fortifying the resilience of vehicle platooning systems against an array of disruption attacks is convincingly demonstrated.

Abstract:This paper investigates secure control for homogeneous vehicle platoons in the presence of false data injection attacks with low communication and computation costs. We consider a scenario where each vehicle within the platoon transmits a local state vector to multiple neighboring vehicles. By leveraging these shared vectors from both preceding and following vehicles, we propose a novel and effective resilient controller for vehicle platoons against node/communication link attacks. More specifically, each vehicle determines the local state deviation vectors from neighboring vehicles. It then eliminates the vectors that are farthest from the origin, with the number of removed vectors equivalent to the maximum number of attacks. This approach offers a considerable advantage by mitigating the effects of abnormality and manipulation, making it robust against arbitrary information tampering within a pre-defined upper boundary for manipulated broadcast information. Importantly, we establish specific conditions for the proposed resilient design to guarantee the internal stability of the vehicle platoon under attacks. Extensive simulations and experiments involving four TurtleBot3s are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed resilient controller.
Decentralized Platoon Join-in-Middle Protocol Considering Communication Delay for Connected and Automated Vehicle

Abstract:Cooperative driving is an essential component of intelligent transport systems (ITSs). It promises greater safety, reduced accidents, efficient traffic flow, and fuel consumption reduction. Vehicle platooning is a representative service model for ITS. The principal sub-systems of platooning systems for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) are cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) systems and platoon management systems. Based on vehicle state information received through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, the CACC system allows platoon vehicles to maintain a narrower safety distance. In addition, the platoon management system using V2V communications allows vehicles to perform platoon maneuvers reliably and accurately. In this paper, we propose a CACC system with a variable time headway and a decentralized platoon join-in-middle maneuver protocol with a trajectory planning system considering the V2V communication delay for CAVs. The platoon join-in-middle maneuver is a challenging research subject as the research must consider the requirement of a more precise management protocol and lateral control for platoon safety and string stability. These CACC systems and protocols are implemented on a simulator for a connected and automated vehicle system, PreScan, and we validated our approach using a realistic control system and V2V communication system provided by PreScan.

Abstract:Intelligent connected vehicles equipped with wireless sensors, intelligent control system, and communication devices are expected to commercially launch and emerge on road in short-term. These smart vehicles are able to partially/fully drive themselves; collect data from sensors, make and execute decisions based on that data; communicate with other vehicles, pedestrians, and nodes installed on the road; and provide infotainment and value-added services, such as broadband transmission of ultra-high definition video, files/apps downloading and uploading, online gaming, access to social media, audio/video conference streaming (office-in-car), live TV streaming, etc.; and so on. In addition, it is also possible for autonomous vehicles to form a "platoon" on road; maintaining close proximity in order to reduce the consumption of fuel and/or emission of gas, decrease costs, increase safety, and enhance the efficiency of the legacy transportation system. These emerging vehicular applications demand a large amount of computing and communication capacity to excel in their compute-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks. Based on these facts, the authors of this paper presented a visionary concept -- "platoon-assisted vehicular cloud" -- that exploits underutilized resources in platoons to augment vehicular cloud aiming to provide cost-effective and on-demand computing resources. Moreover, the authors presented three potential scenarios and explained the exploitation of platoon resources and roadside infrastructure to facilitate new applications. Besides system design, the paper did also summarize a number of open research challenges with the purpose of motivating new advances and potential solutions to this field.
Secure Dynamic Nonlinear Heterogeneous Vehicle Platooning: Denial-of-Service Cyber-Attack Case

Abstract:Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), as a large class of cyber-physical systems, have recently emerged as an effective autonomous driving mechanism in intelligent transportation systems in terms of improvement in safety, fuel economy, road throughput, and driving comfort. This chapter deals with a Secure Distributed Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (Secure–DNMPC) algorithm consisting of (i) detection and (ii) mitigation phases to securely control a string of CAVs, namely vehicle platoons. The approach ensures the desired control performance of a nonlinear heterogeneous platoon equipped by different communication topologies under the premise of the existence of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks. The proposed method is also capable of providing safe and secure control of dynamic platoons in which arbitrary vehicles might perform cut-in and/or cut-out maneuvers. Convergence time and stability analysis of the system are also investigated in some cases. Furthermore, to handle DoS attacks modeled by an exceeding time delay in inter-vehicular data transmission, we propose the integration of an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) design within the controller resulting in a novel Secure–DNMPC–UKF co-design. This, in essence, estimates the delayed system states and feeds the predicted values to the Secure–DNMPC, which efficiently mitigates the attack effects. Simulation results demonstrate the fruitfulness of the proposed method.
V2X Architecture for Autonomous Platoon Management In Urban Environment

Abstract:Platooning shows the potential to increase the efficiency and safety of future road traffic. Many researches illustrate its efficiency in highway scenarios where it is restricted to one lane. However, the biggest challenges lies in urban environments. Indeed, they are characterized by low-speed limits, intersections, traffic lights, buildings, vulnerable users..etc. We propose in this paper an Edge Cloud Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) architecture for full dynamic Platoon management in urban environments. We describe in this paper the overall phases of a Platoon, while considering the Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (C-ACC) function and the traffic light intersection. We focused in this paper on two main contributions: First, the V2X exchanges; indeed we created a new type of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) message called ECEmessages based on the Cooperative-ITS (C-ITS) message structure as Cooperative Awareness Message (CAM), Decentralized Environmental Notification Message (DENM), Signal Phase and Timing (SPAT), and Map message (MAP). Then, in order to test the effectiveness of our proposal, we used the Gazebo ROS simulator. We performed the performance evaluations of the proposal by providing a mapping between the importance of the V2X communications, which is measured in terms of latency and reliability, and of the platoon, which is measured in terms of achievable inter-distance between vehicles.

Abstract:The Internet of Things (IoT) facilitates vehicle communication using wireless networks to improve safety, mobility, and efficiency in transportation. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) can use IoT to form a platoon and travel cooperatively to a common destination as connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In our previous work, we demonstrated platoon negotiation and formation between two vehicles or IoT nodes using Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC)-based messages only. This paper extends these algorithms to support multi-vehicle platoon negotiation and formation using DSRC messages for AVs. To achieve this, once two vehicles negotiate and form a platoon, the platoon member (PM) sends a platoon-complete negotiation to the platoon leader (PL) after the string stability is achieved. Once PL receives this message, it makes itself available to receive negotiations from nearby vehicles who are willing to join its platoon. We modified our platoon-ready, pre-negotiation, negotiation resolver, and platoon joiner algorithms from our prior work. Also, PL maintains the PM vehicle IDs and their position so that it can assign a local leader to the future vehicles joining the platoon. Now, the vehicle willing to platoon negotiates with PL to check if their destinations match. If a common destination is found, the new vehicle further negotiates with PL in a series of transactions to join the existing platoon. During these negotiations, PL assigns the last joined PM as a local leader to this newly joined vehicle to follow. Then, PL adds the new PM vehicle ID and its position to the list. Assigning a local leader not only increases the range of the platoon but also decreases the delay in the message exchange. We demonstrated the above algorithms in the CARLA simulator by extending them to support IoT connectivity and platooning. We validated the algorithms by conducting experiments with three-vehicle platooning scenarios.

Abstract:The rapid evolution of vehicles leads to future vehicular technologies which improve transportation systems. One prominent technology is platooning networks where a vehicle, called platoon head, leads to a group of vehicles. Platoons not only improve the vehicle driving experience and safety but also reduce traffic congestion. Despite all these benefits, the authentication of vehicles for platoon networks is a critical problem in order to share and get access control to other vehicles. Moreover, due to the platoon networks’ complexity and high dynamic formation, it requires an efficient and robust authentication mechanism between vehicles. In this paper, we propose a blockchain-based authentication protocol for platoons using the concept of the platoon as a service. Our approach not only proposes an efficient protocol that reduces the computation and communication for the authentication but also improves the security with the use of a distributed authentication (Auth-I) data ledger across the network and a token-based platoon authentication (Auth-II), which is suitable for practical implementations in areas with different traffic density.

Abstract:Platooning involves a set of vehicles moving in a cooperative fashion at equal inter-vehicular distances. Taking advantage of wireless communication technology, this paper aims to show the impact of network protocols on a platoon using a controller, based on the Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) principles. The network protocols used in this work are DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) and LTE-V2V sidelink (Mode 4). The main focus of this work is to showcase the ability of the controller to maintain platoon stability despite having uncertainties in both, the platoon and the message delivery rates over the network protocols. The controller interacts with all vehicles using messages transmitted over the network protocols. The controller is designed to be responsible for micro-managing every vehicle in the platoon and to ensure that the platoon does not break under any circumstances. SUMO (Simulation of Urban MObility) is used as the simulation platform. Results indicate, that the controller manages to achieve platoon stability in all scenarios, unless a set number of consecutive messages are not transmitted, in which case it leads to collisions. This work also presents certain bottlenecks pertaining to wireless communication with vehicles.

Abstract:Vehicular network technology has made substantial advancements in recent years in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Vehicular Cloud Computing (VCC) has emerged as a novel paradigm with a substantial increase in data exchange within Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs). VCC integrates cloud computing, vehicular networking, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. It enables Infrastructure-to-Vehicle (I2V), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Vehicle-to-Device (V2D) communication. VCC optimizes vehicle, cloud infrastructure, and IoT resources while addressing significant communication security and vehicle-user privacy challenges. To address these issues, we developed an RFID-based authentication protocol for VCC based on a Henon map using a hash function. In addition, we also incorporated a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) to resist physical tampering attacks. We validate the protocol’s security formally and informally. The formal security analysis is conducted through a widely used RoR model. We use the Scyther simulation tool to verify the proposed protocol’s security against various attacks. Moreover, we compare the performance of our protocol with similar existing protocols across important performance parameters such as communication and computation overheads and security attributes. The proposed protocol yields substantial improvements, demonstrating a 40.74% reduction in computation overhead and a 13.03% decrease in communication overhead as compared to related protocols, delivering both enhanced performance and resource efficiency. The analysis demonstrates its capacity to support secure communication in the VCC environment and satisfy desirable security attributes.

Abstract:An optimized control approach for the distributed cooperative vehicular platoon was proposed in this paper, considering actuator delay and nonideal communication condition. A hierarchical structure is used to model the vehicular platoon, where the desired acceleration is optimized by CACC controller and the longitudinal tracking controller is proposed to follow it. In the design process of CACC controller, a parameter space approach and linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method are applied to guarantee the string stability and optimized performance. The influence of communication time delay and dropout rate is revealed by the changing of string stable region. Analytical results are verified by numerical simulations of a six-vehicle platoon where the leading vehicle follows the FTP-75 drive cycle speed profile. Furthermore, a Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test is carried out with Carsim to simulate a high-fidelity vehicle dynamic model and dedicated short range communication (DSRC) modems as hardware in the loop as well as the control unit to achieve the inter-vehicle communication. The results show that the designed CACC platooning controller exhibits favorable performance in highway driving scenarios. The platooning vehicles display excellent car-following behavior with high accuracy, driving comfort and safety.

Abstract:This article deals with the problem of secure distributed adaptive platooning control of automated vehicles over vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) in the presence of intermittent denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. The platoon, which is wirelessly connected via directed vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication, is composed of a group of following vehicles subject to unknown heterogeneous nonlinearities and external disturbance inputs, and a leading vehicle subject to unknown nonlinearity and external disturbance as well as an unknown control input. Under such a platoon setting, this article aims to accomplish secure distributed platoon formation tracking with the desired longitudinal spacing and the same velocities and accelerations guided by the leader regardless of the simultaneous presence of nonlinearities, uncertainties, and DoS attacks. First, a new logical data packet processor is developed on each vehicle to identify the intermittent DoS attacks via verifying the time-stamps of the received data packets. Then, a scalable distributed neural-network-based adaptive control design approach is proposed to achieve secure platooning control. It is proved that under the established design procedure, the vehicle state estimation errors and platoon tracking errors can be regulated to reside in small neighborhoods around zero. Finally, comparative simulation studies are provided to substantiate the effectiveness and merits of the proposed control design approach on maintaining the desired platooning performance and attack tolerance.

Abstract:There has been renewed interest in examining the multiple causes of undernutrition and growth failure in cystic fibrosis. It is now recognized that undernutrition is caused by unfavourable energy balance rather than an inherent component of the disease. Furthermore, there appears to be a direct association between the degree of undernutrition and the severity of pulmonary disease, which in turn affects overall prognosis. Energy imbalance may be caused by three main factors: increased energy loss because of nutrient maldigestion; reduced energy intake due to an improper diet and/or anorexia from respiratory disease, abdominal symptoms or clinical depression and increased energy expenditure with advanced lung disease. Most patients are capable of compensating for these factors; provided energy intake is sufficient, normal growth velocity and nutritional status is maintained. However, in a minority of older patients, when advanced lung disease supervenes, energy expenditure rises resulting in an energy deficit. Undernutrition, with loss of energy stores and lean tissue may in turn contribute to progressive deterioration of lung function. When this occurs, long-term invasive methods of nutritional support can restore energy balance.
Formal Verification of Autonomous Vehicle Platooning

Abstract:The coordination of multiple autonomous vehicles into convoys or platoons is expected on our highways in the near future. However, before such platoons can be deployed, the new autonomous behaviors of the vehicles in these platoons must be certified. An appropriate representation for vehicle platooning is as a multi-agent system in which each agent captures the "autonomous decisions" carried out by each vehicle. In order to ensure that these autonomous decision-making agents in vehicle platoons never violate safety requirements, we use formal verification. However, as the formal verification technique used to verify the agent code does not scale to the full system and as the global verification technique does not capture the essential verification of autonomous behavior, we use a combination of the two approaches. This mixed strategy allows us to verify safety requirements not only of a model of the system, but of the actual agent code used to program the autonomous vehicles.
