Abstract:The incidence of hepatitis-associated antigen in blood donors in Greece has been found by HADJIYANNIS et al. [2] to be high (2.9%) as compared with figures reported by others. This high incidence increases the risk of exposure t o the antigen, especially for patients who receive large amounts of blood or repeated transfusions over a long period. The purpose of this study was to investigate the occurrence of both the hepatitis-associated antigen and antibody in a group of patients with homozygous @-thalassaemia who had received regularly blood transfusions since early childhood.
