Abstract:The average-speed emission model (Speed-based model), a widely used and simple method of calculating road vehicle emissions, offers easy accessibility by expressing emissions as a function of average speed. However, there are limitations in expressing emissions generated through complex mechanisms simply as a function of speed. Real-world driving tests using a portable emission measurement system can incorporate the impact of vehicle driving load on emissions. In this study, we analyzed real-world emissions data from 94 light-duty vehicles and developed time-based emission factors depending on vehicle speed and vehicle-specific power (VSP). We also propose a speed-VSP based model to estimate regional CO 2 and NOx emissions by combining time-based emission factors and vehicle operating times. The speed-based model and Speed-VSP based model exhibit a 44% difference in NOx emissions and a 29% difference in CO 2 emission. In a comparison of the two models against RDE test results, the speed-VSP based model achieved high accuracy in predicting NOx and CO 2 emissions with a lower root mean square error (RMSE). Specifically, for NOx emissions predictions, the speed-VSP based model achieved an RMSE of 122-270 mg/km, while the speed-based model showed a much higher RMSE of 435-476 mg/km. For CO 2 emissions predictions, the speed-VSP based model achieved an RMSE of 34-56 mg/km, while the speed-based model showed a much higher RMSE of 36-72 mg/km. The results of this study present an opportunity to reassess and improve conventional method of measuring and evaluating emissions from road transport.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization and industrialization, the number of light-duty gasoline vehicles (LDGVs) in China has continued to grow rapidly, leading to a significant increase in traffic pollution. Therefore, it is essential to accurately calculate the emission of LDGVs for air quality monitoring and management. Fortunately, Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) is a sophisticated model for estimating mobile source emissions with good prediction accuracy. However, the parameters of MOVES are based on the field tests in the US, which is worth exploring whether MOVES can be applied to other countries. Hence, in this paper, we used the portable emission measurement system (PEMS) to conduct real driving emission (RDE) tests of LDGVs, aiming to explore the possibility of the MOVES application in China. Based on the field tests, we modified basic parameters in the MOVES model, but unsatisfactory prediction performance was obtained. Existing research on improving MOVES performance mainly involved new binning of operating modes, but these methods had limited improvements. Though studies have also used machine learning methods for predicting LDGV emissions, they lacked comparison and integration with the MOVES model. To further improve the prediction accuracy, we proposed a novel road vehicle emission model that integrated the machine learning method and the MOVES to predict the road-level emission rates of NO and CO 2 emissions of LDGVs. In addition, we employed the Boruta algorithm to capture the key influencing factors and promote prediction performance. The enhanced model outperformed MOVES and achieved higher R 2 values. On average, the improvement for CO 2 was 0.132, and for NO, it was 0.261. This work will provide references for MOVES improvements in practical scenarios and better predict pollutant emissions for LDGVs using limited resources of field tests in cities outside the US.

Identifying the Effect of Vehicle Operating History on Vehicle Running Emissions

Abstract:This research aims to determine the overall effects that a vehicle's short-term operating history has on its subsequent emissions, and how Vehicle Specific Power (VSP)-based vehicle emission models could be improved to account for these effects. Current VSP-based emission models, such as the U.S. EPA's MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES), only predict emissions based on instantaneous vehicle activity and the corresponding VSP value; the past short-term vehicle operational activity is not taken into account (e.g., the last 10-20 s of operation). For example, instantaneous vehicle emissions could be affected by a hard acceleration vs. a deceleration event at that particular point in time. This paper attempts to determine the accuracy of VSP-based emission models, which may suffer due to the fact that the history effects are being overlooked.A number of experiments were carried out in order to determine the anomalies resulting from instantaneous estimation as opposed to taking short-term vehicle operating history into account. These experiments compare model estimates with actual emission measurements. A quantitative analysis shows that the higher power operating modes (such as modes 33, 35, 37, 38, and 40 in MOVES) had the greatest variability - sometimes in the range of 60-100% - due to the effects that vehicle operating history has on carbon monoxide (CO). Hydrocarbons (HC) in higher power operating modes also vary 40-60% depending on the driving cycle. For lower power operating modes (e.g.. MOVES modes 1-30), the uncertainty for all pollutants was significantly less. It was also established that the carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) estimations conducted by MOVES were least affected by the vehicle operational history effects compared with other emissions. As such, MOVES emission results are more accurate for mild to normal driving cycles, but there is greater uncertainty for higher power driving cycles. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Evaluation of the International Vehicle Emission (IVE) Model with On-Road Remote Sensing Measurements

Abstract:International Vehicle Emissions (IVE) model funded by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) is designed to estimate emissions from motor vehicles in developing countries. In this study, the IVE model was evaluated by utilizing a dataset available from the remote sensing measurements on a large number of vehicles at five different sites in Hangzhou, China, in 2004 and 2005. Average fuel-based emission factors derived from the remote sensing measurements were compared with corresponding emission factors derived from IVE calculations for urban, hot stabilized condition. The results show a good agreement between the two methods for gasoline passenger cars' HC emission for all IVE subsectors and technology classes. In the case of CO emissions, the modeled results were reasonably good, although systematically underestimate the emissions by almost 12%-50% for different technology classes. However, the model totally overestimated NOx emissions. The IVE NOx emission factors were 1.5-3.5 times of the remote sensing measured ones. The IVE model was also evaluated for light duty gasoline truck, heavy duty gasoline vehicles and motor cycles. A notable result was observed that the decrease in emissions from technology class State II to State I were overestimated by the IVE model compared to remote sensing measurements for all the three pollutants. Finally, in order to improve emission estimation, the adjusted base emission factors from local studies are strongly recommended to be used in the IVE model.
Analysis of U.S. EPA's MOVES Model's Operating Modes and Handling of History Effects

Abstract:The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently released the MOVES (MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator) model for estimating emissions from mobile sources. The MOVES model was developed over ten years and is one of the most advanced multi-scale emission models. Thus far, MOVES has been internally validated primarily within EPA, comparing model results with independent real-world emission measurements. It is expected that as the model is more widely used by others, model validity will be a topic of increased interest. The MOVES modeling methodology is based on integrating vehicle activity distributions with emission factors that are a function of vehicle specific power and speed. As such, there is no direct accounting for emission history effects. In other words, the emissions predicted are based on the instantaneous measures of vehicle activity and its corresponding vehicle specific power; there is no direct accounting for the past historical operational activity (e.g., 10 to 20 seconds). In this paper, we examine the MOVES model in comparing it with independent emissions measurements with the goal of seeing if the emissions historical effect has a significant impact on predicted emissions. It was found that the history effect does indeed affect emissions. The errors produced by instantaneous estimation without accounting for history effects were observed when directly comparing modeling results with measurement trajectories. A quantitative analysis shows that the higher power OpModes (33, 35, 37, 38, and 40) had the greatest variability due to the history effect for carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC), in the range of 50-150% and 40-60% respectively for particular vehicle activity events. For lower power OpModes (<30), HC and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are affected by history effects in the range of 20%-50% for other types of events.

Abstract:The MOBILE6.2 model was replaced by the Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator (MOVES) in 2012 as an official tool recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) to predict vehicular pollutant emission factors. In this study, on-road vehicle emission inventories of CO and NOx for Southeast Texas generated by MOVES and MOBILE6.2 in two versions of the 2005 National Emission Inventory (NEI) were studied by comparing predicted CO and NOx using the EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Model incorporated with a source-oriented gas phase chemical mechanism with measurements made at six urban and industrial sites in Southeast Texas. The source tracing technique allows direct determination of contributions of on-road vehicles to overall CO and NOx concentrations and identification of ambient concentration measurements which are mostly impacted by vehicle emissions.By grouping the fractional bias (FB) values of the hourly predictions based on vehicle contributions to total CO or NOx concentrations, clear trends in the FB were observed, indicating systematic biases in the emission inventory for these species. Data points dominated by vehicle emissions suggest that surface CO concentrations due to vehicle exhaust are significantly over-estimated by a factor of 2 using either MOVES or MOBILE6.2. NOx concentrations are overestimated by approximately 20-35% and 70% by using the MOBILE6.2 and MOVES emissions, respectively. Emission scaling runs show that a domain-wide reduction of MOBILE6.2 CO emissions by 60% and NOx emissions by 15-25% leads to better model performance of exhaust CO and NOx concentrations in the current study. Abstract:In order to study the macro-model of vehicle exhaust emissions in accordance with the national conditions of our country, this paper tests the gas emissions of three different types of diesel touring vehicles by using PEMS system, and analyzes the relationship between their emission characteristics, vehicle speed and acceleration.The results show that the emission factor has a strong positive correlation with vehicle speed and acceleration, so increasing the driving speed and reducing the acceleration frequency can effectively reduce the emission of pollutants. At the same time, the COPERT model is used to predict the emission factors. Compared with the measured values, the COPERT prediction values of each pollutant are on the low side, and the error range is 7% - 65%, which provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the applicability of COPERT model in China.
A novel modal emission modelling approach and its application with on-road emission measurements

Abstract:Modal emission models describe vehicular emissions with stratified vehicle kinetic conditions or engine parameters. They are widely adopted in regulatory applications in North America and Europe to estimate emissions and energy consumption from mobile sources. However, challenges exist in the development of modal bins, especially that previous approaches rely on manual adjustment and tuning, which increase the propensity to emission misclassification. This study proposes a new approach to generate modal bins, which overcomes the limitations of previous studies. It uses a Greedy algorithm to define optimal mode boundaries and improve model robustness. The model is calibrated with emission data from a portable emission monitoring system and validated against an independent dataset. Our modelling approach can effectively reflect carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in steady and aggressive driving conditions with errors lower than 7% at the trip level. The introduction of engine parameters is found to improve model prediction for carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) by about 30% compared with the models relying on external variables.

Abstract:To project vehicle emission inventories more accurately in China, dynamic vehicle emission factors have been developed considering several factors such as regulated emission limits, regulated fuel economy, vehicle deterioration of emission factors, and fuel economy deterioration. This study has also developed a method to estimate fuel economy based on fuel economy claimed by manufacturers, a ratio of real road fuel economy on road/fuel economy claimed by manufacturers, vehicle deterioration rate, vehicle stocks, and fuel economy regulation in China. The emission inventories of CO, VOCs, NOx, PM10, and CO2 from vehicle fleets in Hangzhou, China during 2004–2030 are projected using above two methods. The projected results show that regulated vehicle emission limits of National I and II standard of China are not effective to reduce the emission factors of vehicles except motorcycles, and only National III and National IV of Vehicles Emission Limits can apparently reduce overall emission factors of all type vehicles with both gasoline and diesel. The results also show that emission factors will continue to decrease after 2010. Up to 2030, the total emission inventories of CO, VOCs, NOx, and PM10 will increase by 467.52%, 61.44%, 8.31%, and 78.35%, respectively. However, emission inventory of CO2 will grow continuously to 2030 with 770.54% growth rate.
Development of Vehicle Emission Model Based on Real-Road Test and Driving Conditions in Tianjin, China

Abstract:Based on the demand of vehicle emission research and control, this paper presents the development of a portable vehicle measurement system (PEMS) based on SEMTECH-DS and ELPI+, the vehicle emission tests carried out on actual roads, and the data obtained for the establishment and validation of a vehicle emission model. Based on the results of the vehicle emission test, it was found that vehicle driving conditions (speed, acceleration, vehicle specific power (VSP), etc.) had a significant impact on the pollutant emission rate. In addition, local driving cycles were generated and the frequency distribution of VSP-bin under different cycles was analyzed. Then, through the establishment of an emission rate database, calculation of emission factors and validation of the emission model, a vehicle emission model based on actual road driving conditions was developed by taking VSP as the “surrogate variables”. It showed that the emission factor model established in this study could better reflect the vehicle transient emissions on the actual road with high accuracy and local adaptability. Through this study, it could be found that due to the great differences in traffic development modes and vehicle driving conditions in different cities in China, the emission model based on driving conditions was a better choice to carry out the research on vehicle emission in Chinese cities. Compared with directly applying international models or quoting the recommended values of relevant macroscopic guidelines, the emission factor model established in this study, using actual driving conditions, could better reflect the vehicle transient emissions on the actual road with high accuracy and local adaptability. In addition, due to the rapid development of China’s urban traffic and the rapid change of driving conditions, it was of great significance to regularly update China’s urban conditions to improve the accuracy of the model, no matter which model was chosen.

Abstract:Motor vehicles are one of the largest sources of air pollutants worldwide. Despite their importance, motor vehicle emissions are inadequately understood and quantified, esp. in developing countries. In this study, the real-world emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxide (NO) were measured using an on-road remote sensing system at five sites in Hangzhou, China in 2004 and 2005. Average emission factors of CO, HC and NOx for petrol vehicles of different model year, technology class and vehicle type were calculated in grams of pollutant per unit of fuel use (gl−1) from approximately 32,260 petrol vehicles. Because the availability of data used in traditional on-road mobile source estimation methodologies is limited in China, fuel-based approach was implemented to estimate motor vehicle emissions using fuel sales as a measure of vehicle activity, and exhaust emissions factors from remote sensing measurements. The fuel-based exhaust emission inventories were also compared with the results from the recent international vehicle emission (IVE) model. Results show that petrol vehicle fleet in Hangzhou has significantly high CO emissions, relatively high HC and low NOx, with the average emission factors of 193.07±15.63, 9.51±2.40 and 5.53±0.48gl−1, respectively. For year 2005 petrol vehicles exhaust emissions contributed with 182,013±16,936, 9107±2255 and 5050±480 metric tonyr−1 of CO, HC and NOx, respectively. The inventories are 45.5% higher, 6.6% higher and 53.7% lower for CO, HC and NOx, respectively, than the estimates using IVE travel-based model. In addition, a number of insights about the emission distributions and formation mechanisms have been obtained from an in-depth analysis of these results.
Variability in operation-based NO(x) emission factors with different test routes, and its effects on the real-driving emissions of light diesel vehicles

Abstract:The objective of this study is to quantify the differences in NO(x) emissions between standard and non-standard driving and vehicle operating conditions, and to estimate by how much NO(x) emissions exceed the legislative emission limits under typical Korean road traffic conditions. Twelve Euro 3-5 light-duty diesel vehicles (LDDVs) manufactured in Korea were driven on a chassis dynamometer over the standard New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) and a representative Korean on-road driving cycle (KDC). NO(x) emissions, average speeds and accelerations were calculated for each 1-km trip segment, so called averaging windows. The results suggest that the NO(x) emissions of the tested vehicles are more susceptible to variations in the driving cycles than to those in the operating conditions. Even under comparable operating conditions, the NO(x) control capabilities of vehicles differ from each other, i.e., NO(x) control is weaker for the KDC than for the NEDC. The NO(x) emissions over the KDC for given vehicle operating conditions exceed those over the NEDC by more than a factor of 8. Consequently, on-road NO(x) emission factors are estimated here to exceed the Euro 5 emission limit by up to a factor of 8, 4 and 3 for typical Korean urban, rural, and motorway road traffic conditions, respectively. Our findings support the development of technical regulations for supplementary real-world emission tests for emission certification and the corresponding research actions taken by automotive industries.
MOVES-Matrix for high-performance on-road energy and running emission rate modeling applications

Abstract:The MOVES model was developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) to estimate emissions from on-road mobile sources and nonroad sources in the United States. Coupling high-resolution on-road vehicle activity data with appropriate MOVES emission rates further advances research efforts designed to assess the environmental impacts of transportation design and operation strategies. However, the complicated MOVES interface and slow performance makes it difficult to assess large, regional scale transportation networks and to undertake analyses of large-scale systems that are dynamic in nature. The MOVES-Matrix system develops an initial Large Matrix of MOVES outputs by running MOVES 146,853 times on the PACE high performance computing cluster to generate more than 90 billion emission rates to populate the matrix for a single area with one fuel regime and one inspection and maintenance program. A total of 117 such Large Matrices would be needed for the entire United States. The MOVES-Matrix system developed can be used to conduct the emissions modeling 200-times faster than using MOVES. The hypothetical case study shows that MOVES-Matrix is able to generate the exact same emission results as the MOVES model to ensure the validity for regulatory analysis. The resulting matrix allows users to link emission rates to big data projects and to evaluate changes in emissions for dynamic transportation systems in near-real-time. MOVES-Matrix does not currently estimate emissions from starts, hoteling or evaporative emissions, and the research team is working on MOVES-Matrix version 2 that supports incorporating off-network modeling.Implications: MOVES-Matrix should be of interest to a broad readership including those interested in vehicle emission modeling, near-road air quality modeling, transportation conformity analysis. The paper should also interest engineers who are involved in transportation regulatory and conformity analysis, state implementation plan, and who are seeking an efficient way of conducting regulatory emission modeling and air quality analysis in the United States.
Study on CO2 Emission Assessment of Heavy-Duty and Ultra-Heavy-Duty Vehicles Using Machine Learning

Abstract:EU is actively moving towards the implementation of Euro-7 regulations, thus placing a strong emphasis on real-road emissions. Euro-7 introduced OBM (on-board monitoring), which is an enhancement of regulations that closely replicates real-world road conditions. Furthermore, there is a need to devise an effective application strategy for utilizing the driving monitoring data prior to the enforcement of OBM. This study addresses these challenges by conducting RDE (real-driving emission) tests on both 3.5-ton and 25-ton commercial vehicles to gather CO 2 emissions and engine control unit data accessible through an OBD (on-board diagnostics) port. To process the RDE data, an appropriate machine learning model, XGBoost, was selected and trained. The outcome of our CO 2 emission prediction for the two vehicles demonstrated that employing monitoring data yielded reliable estimates of actual road CO 2 emissions. Finally, a comparative analysis was conducted between the proposed monitoring approach and the fuel-based CO 2 monitoring method using the emission factor from EMEP/EEA air pollutant emission inventory guidebook 2019 utilizing fuel consumption data achieved through the OBFCM (on-board fuel and energy consumption monitoring) rule. Our method, which is based on predictive CO 2 emissions monitoring, exhibited significantly greater accuracy. This outcome underscores the necessity to adopt the proposed approach.

Abstract:South Korea has been suffering from high PM2.5 pollution. Previous studies have contributed to establishing PM2.5 mitigation policies but have not considered provincial features and sector-interactions. In that sense, the integrated assessment model (IAM) could complement the shortcomings of previous studies. IAM, capable of analyzing PM2.5 pollution levels at the provincial level in Korea, however, has not been developed yet. Hence, this study (i) expands on IAM which can represent provincial-level spatial resolution in Korea (GCAM-Korea) with air pollutant emissions modeling which focuses on the road transportation sector and (ii) examines the zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) subsidy policy’s effects on PM2.5 mitigation using the expanded GCAM-Korea. Simulation results show that PM2.5 emissions decrease by 0.6–4.1% compared to the baseline, and the Seoul metropolitan area contributes 38–44% to the overall PM2.5 emission reductions. As the ZEVs subsidy is weighted towards the light-duty vehicle 4-wheels (LDV4W) sector, various spillover effects are found: ZEVs’ share rises intensively in the LDV4W sector leading to an increase in its service costs, and at the same time, driving bus service costs to become relatively cheaper. This, in turn, drives an increase in bus service demand and emissions discharge. Furthermore, this type of impact of the ZEVs subsidy policy does not reduce internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) in freight trucks, although diesel freight trucks are a major contributor to PM2.5 emissions and also to NOx.

Abstract:Characterized by a high frequency of use, harsh working environments, poor maintenance, and low levels of emission controls, rural vehicles (RVs) are becoming an important source of air pollution. Our study used a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) to test the real-world emissions of 35 RVs on provincial, rural, and farm roads. The results show that high emission rates of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) mainly occurred when accelerating at low speeds. However, high levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) were emitted during high-speed acceleration. The particulate number (PN) of emissions was higher when the RVs were accelerating. According to the overall test results, the vehicle specific power (VSP) on the provincial road mostly ranged within (0, 3], accounting for 68.80% of the total. The VSP on rural and farm roads was concentrated within (0, 2] kW·ton−1, accounting for 67.09% and 76.64% of the total, respectively. We defined 14 bins based on the distribution of the VSP values and calculated the average emission rate of each bin. By comparing the average emission rate among the bins, we found that within Bins 1–7 (VSP < 0 kW·ton−1), CO, HC, and NOx emissions slowly increased as the VSP increased. In Bins 8–13 (VSP ≥ 0 kW·ton−1), the average emission rates of four pollutants increased as the VSP increased. However, all pollutants decreased in Bin 14 (VSP ≥ 6 kW·ton−1). We built a microscopic emission model according to the VSP distribution characteristics of RVs on different road types. We compared the measured and simulated emission factors and found that our emission model can greatly simulate the HC, NOx and PN emission factors of RVs.

Haemolytic anaemia in rhesus monkeys induced by methylcellulose

Abstract:The rhesus monkey was evaluated in its haemopoietic and histological response to intraperitoneal injections of methylcellulose. The haematologic alterations included a mild haemolytic anaemia, lymphofaenia, monocytosis, a shortened survival of Cr51-labelled autologous erythrocytes (17·1 vs 13·3 days, P<0·025) and normoblastic hyperplasia of the bone marrow. There was a diffuse sequestration of the polymer in the phagocytic cells of the spleen, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes and adrenal glands. The renal glomerular endothelium also consistently stored this material. Overt splenomegaly was not induced. The monkey appears to present, along with other animals, a rather species-specific response to methylcellulose that is accompanied by fundamental responses observable in all subjects.
Vehicle Emission and Near-Road Air Quality Modeling for Shanghai, China

Abstract:In China, motor vehicle emissions have been identified as the major source of urban air pollution. Thus, estimation of emissions and their impact on air quality is necessary. Vehicle emissions vary strongly with region and depend on local vehicle operation and emission performance. This paper uses the MOVES (Motor Vehicle Emission Simulator) model, released by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, for the estimation of vehicle emission factors in Shanghai, China. To achieve a convincing emission result, vehicle operation is extracted from massive taxi Global Positioning System (GPS) data, and the emission inventory from MOVES is revised according to China's vehicle emission standards. In addition, deterioration factors are calculated on the basis of vehicle condition. Comprehensive emission factors are generated for Shanghai light-duty vehicles at various average speed levels. The results indicate that emission factors for hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen of in-use light vehicles in China are 0.1 to 0.25 g/km, 4 to 7 g/km, and 0.4 to 0.8 g/km, respectively. These amounts are 15, 1.9, and 5.9 times higher than those in the United States, respectively. By 2012, the Environmental Protection Bureau had established 10 monitoring sites in Shanghai and released data for real-time concentrations of particulate matter less than 2.5 μm in diameter, particulate matter less than 10 μm in diameter, nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), and sulfur dioxide to the public. On the basis of the new release of data, a field study estimating near-road air quality was conducted with MOVES and the air dispersion model AERMOD. The concentration result shows that the accuracy of near-road NO 2 estimation is improved with taxi GPS data and the revised MOVES emission inventory. The study explores the extended application of MOVES by offering a procedure for applying MOVES in non-U.S. regions.
Characterization of diesel emission from in-use vehicles and an engine in Beijing, China

Abstract:Real-world emission from 29 diesel vehicles in Beijing was measured by on-board test system. Emission rates of PM2.5, NOx, HC and CO were derived from SEMTECH-D and DMM (Dekati Mass Monitor). And pollutants emission of a Euro 2-standard engine with different diesels was also determined by dynamometer test. In this research, emission factor of NOx and CO have better correlation with driving velocity compared with acceleration. While distance-based emission factors meet with the trends of velocity, acceleration better than the fuel-based emission factors do. PM2.5 and NOx emission factors of vehicles and engine were sorted by power, illustrating that in-use vehicles emit more. Obtained emission factors from the diesel vehicles do not indicate strong correlation with the vehicle type, model year and VKT (vehicle kilometer traveled) of the diesel vehicles, and these emission factors are higher than the other researches.
A Fast Method for Estimating the Emission Factors of Air Pollutants from In-Use Vehicles Fleet

Abstract:The real-world emission factors of gaseous and particulate air pollutants emitted from in-use vehicles, can be rapidly estimated using monitoring data of their concentration profiles from inside roadway tunnels using a mobile laboratory equipped with fast monitoring instruments. The concentrations of CO2 and particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PM-PAHs) and NOx, were observed to increase linearly with traveling distance inside two successive roadway tunnels: the Hongjimun Tunnel and the Jeongneung Tunnel on the Naebu Express Way in Seoul, Korea, except for a small region of decrease. In the decreasing regions, within a few hundred meters of the entrance and before the exit, outside background air with low concentrations of air pollutants was thought to have intruded. From the slopes of the linear regression between distance and concentrations, a fleet-averaged (light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles with 54%, 36%, and 10%, respectively) emission factor of CO2, PM-PAHs, and NOx at an average speed of ~60 km h−1 could be calculated as 197 ± 38 g km−1, 4.2 ± 0.8 × 10−4 g km−1, and 0.530 ± 0.230 g km−1, respectively, which are within the ranges of values reported in the literature. For each tunnel, the emission factors of CO2, PM-PAHs, and NOx estimated on days with higher-than-normal fractions of heavy-duty vehicles, were higher than those on other days. From these results, the new fast method proposed in this study is considered useful for estimating real-world emission factors of air pollutants by using a mobile laboratory as a complementary tool to traditional tunnel studies. This method can be used to rapidly make emission maps at roadway tunnels in mega-cities like Seoul, Korea, for urban air-quality management.
