Abstract:MPs carrying ARGs can travel between freshwater and seawater due to intensive land-sea interaction in onshore marine aquaculture zones (OMAZ). However, the response of ARGs in plastisphere with different biodegradability to freshwater-seawater shift is still unknown. In this study, ARG dynamics and associated microbiota on biodegradable poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) and non-biodegradable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) MPs were investigated through a simulated freshwater-seawater shift. The results exhibited that freshwater-seawater shift significantly influenced ARG abundance in plastisphere. The relative abundance of most studied ARGs decreased rapidly in plastisphere after they entered seawater from freshwater but increased on PBAT after MPs entered freshwater from seawater. Besides, the high relative abundance of multi-drug resistance (MDR) genes occurred in plastisphere, and the co-change between most ARGs and mobile genetic elements indicated the role of horizontal gene transfer on ARG regulation. Proteobacteria was dominant phylum in plastisphere and the dominant genera, such as Allorhizobium-Neorhizobium-Pararhizobium-Rhizobium, Afipia, Gemmobacter and Enhydrobacter, were significantly associated with qnrS, tet and MDR genes in plastisphere. Moreover, after MPs entered new water environment, the ARGs and microbiota genera in plastisphere changed significantly and tended to converge with those in receiving water. These results indicated that MP biodegradability and freshwater-seawater interaction influenced potential hosts and distributions of ARGs, of which biodegradable PBAT posed a high risk in ARG dissemination. This study would be helpful for understanding the impact of biodegradable MP pollution on spread of antibiotic resistance in OMAZ.

Abstract:The ubiquitous microplastics (MPs) in water environment play an important role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) due to their exchange between floating MPs and receiving waters. However, whether the ARG exchange is persistent or transient and what are the differences in ARG exchange between conventional plastics and biodegradable plastics are the two key issues to be addressed. In this study, biodegradable PBAT and non-biodegradable PET MPs were chosen to explore the MP-water ARG exchange after the MPs floated to the receiving waters. The results demonstrated that the active exchange of ARGs between MPs and receiving waters occurred, which, however, were transient for most of ARGs. The relative abundance of ARGs both on the MPs and in the waters rapidly decreased to the initial or lower levels within 4 weeks. Approximately 25-50% (ARG subtype number ratio) of studied ARG subtypes were introduced into the receiving waters by MPs, and 35-65% of studied ARG subtypes went through fluctuation in terms of abundance on MPs and in the receiving water. ARGs tended to converge between MPs and the receiving waters with time. Furthermore, the ARG exchange between MPs and waters facilitated horizontal gene transfer (HGT). IntI1 and tnpA05 played the crucial roles in HGT, which was indicated by their correlated change with most ARGs; in contrast, tnpA04 showed the obvious lagging responses. The biodegradable MP of PBAT generally accumulated higher levels of most ARGs including multidrug resistant genes than the non-biodegradable MP of PET. The transient exchange of most ARGs between MPs and water implies that the on-off hitchhiking of ARGs on MPs in aquatic environment may not exert significant influence on ARG transmission. However, compared with the conventional plastics, the biodegradable MPs might pose much higher ARG dissemination risks due to the higher enrichment of ARGs particularly with people's ever-increasingly usage. Enough attention must be paid to this emerging issue.
Size-dependent promotion of micro(nano)plastics on the horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes in constructed wetlands

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) have been identified as significant sources of micro(nano)plastics (MPs/NPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in aquatic environments. However, little is known about the impact of MPs/NPs exposure on horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs and shaping the corresponding ARG hosts' community. Herein, the contribution of polystyrene (PS) particles (control, 4 mm, 100 μm, and 100 nm) to ARG transfer was investigated by adding an engineered fluorescent Escherichia coli harboring RP4 plasmid-encoded ARGs into CWs. It was found MPs/NPs significantly promoted ARG transfer in a size-dependent manner in each CW medium ( p < 0.05). The 100 μm-sized PS exhibited the most significant promotion of ARG transfer ( p < 0.05), whereas 100 nm-sized PS induced limited promotion due to its inhibitory activity on microbes. The altered RP4-carrying bacterial communities suggested that MPs/NPs, especially 100 μm-PS, could recruit pathogenic and nitrifying bacteria to acquire ARGs. The increased sharing of RP4-carrying core bacteria in CW medium further suggested that ARGs can spread into CW microbiome using MPs/NPs as carriers. Overall, our results highlight the high risks of ARG dissemination induced by MPs/NPs exposure and emphasize the need for better control of plastic disposal to prevent the potential health threats.

Abstract:The spread of bacteriophage-borne antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) poses a realistic threat to human health. Nanomaterials, as important emerging pollutants, have potential impacts on ARGs dissemination in aquatic environments. However, little is known about its role in transductive transfer of ARGs mediated by bacteriophage in the presence of microplastics. Therefore, this study comprehensively investigated the influence of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the transfer of bacteriophage-encoded ARGs in planktonic Escherichia coli and microplastic-attached biofilm. AgNPs exposure facilitated the phage transduction in planktonic and microplastic-attached bacteria at ambient concentration of 0.1 mg/L. Biological binding mediated by phage-specific recognition, rather than physical aggregation conducted by hydrophilicity and ζ-potential, dominated the bacterial adhesion of AgNPs. The aggregated AgNPs in turn resulted in elevated oxidative stress and membrane destabilization, which promoted the bacteriophage infection to planktonic bacteria. AgNPs exposure could disrupt colanic acid biosynthesis and then reduce the thickness of biofilm on microplastics, contributing to the transfer of phage-encoded ARGs. Moreover, the roughness of microplastics also affected the performance of AgNPs on the transductive transfer of ARGs in biofilms. This study reveals the compound risks of nanomaterials and microplastics in phage-borne ARGs dissemination and highlights the complexity in various environmental scenarios.

Abstract:Plastic pollution and antibiotic resistance are two emerging environmental and human health crises today. Although it was revealed that microplastics can serve as vectors for the dissemination of antibiotic resistance, it is still unclear how the nanoplastics influence the horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Herein, we firstly compared the effect of polystyrene (PS) micro/nanoplastics on the transformation of plasmid-borne ARG, using a transformation model consisting of plasmid pUC19 (ampR ) and Escherichia coli DH5α (recipient). Due to its size effect, PS nanoplastics (10-500 mg/L) significantly enhanced the transformation efficiency (2.8-5.4 folds) and frequency (3.2-8.4 folds) of exogenous ampR into E. coli, while PS microplastics exerted no influence. The detailed mechanisms were found that nanoplastics induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduction, activated SOS response, increased cell membrane permeability and changed the secretion systems, thereby facilitating the uptake of exogenous DNA by bacteria. Moreover, the co-presences of nanoplastics with humic acid or Fe3+ relieved to some extent, but did not completely alleviate the promoting effect of nanoplastics on plasmid transformation. Our findings suggest that the risk of nanoplastics on promoting the dissemination of antibiotic resistance should not be neglected, and further studies are needed to investigate such risk in complex environments.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs), identified as emerging pollutants, pose a great risk to environment and global public health, exerting profound influences on the prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Despite evidence suggesting that nano-sized plastic particles can facilitate the horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs, it is imperative to explore strategies for inhibiting the transfer of ARGs. Currently, limited information exists regarding the characteristics of environmentally aged NPs and their impact on ARGs propagation. Herein, we investigated the impact of photo-aged NPs on the transfer of ARG-carrying plasmids into Escherichia coli (E. coli) cells. Following simulated sunlight irradiation, photo-aged nano-sized polystyrene plastics (PS NPs) exhibited multiple enzyme-like activities, including peroxidase (POD) and oxidase (OXD), leading to a burst of reactive oxygen species (ROS). At relatively low concentrations (0.1, 1 μg/mL), both pristine and aged PS NPs facilitated the transfer of pUC19 and pHSG396 plasmids within E. coli due to moderate ROS production and enhanced cell membrane permeability. Intriguingly, at relatively high concentrations (5, 10 μg/mL), aged PS NPs significantly suppressed plasmids transformation. The non-unidirectional impact of aged PS NPs involved the overproduction of ROS (•OH and •O2-) via nanozyme activity, directly degrading ARGs and damaging plasmid structure. Additionally, oxidative damage to bacteria resulted from the presence of much toxic free radicals, causing physical damage to cell membranes, reduction of the SOS response and restriction of adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) supply, ultimately leading to inactivation of recipient cells. This study unveils the intrinsic multienzyme-like activity of environmentally aged NPs, highlighting their potential to impede the transfer and dissemination of ARGs.
Promotion of antibiotic-resistant genes dissemination by the micro/nanoplastics in the gut of snail Achatina fulica

Abstract:Terrestrial animal intestines are hotspots for the enrichment of micro/nano plastics (M/NPs) and antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs). However, little is known about the further impact of M/NPs on the spread of ARGs in animal guts. This study investigates the role of M/NPs (polystyrene) with varying particle sizes (0.082, 42, and 182 μm), concentrations (10 and 100 mg/L), and exposure durations (4 and 16 days) in the ARGs dissemination via conjugation in the edible snail (Achatina fulica) gut. Combination of qPCR with 16S rRNA-based sequencing, we found that PS exposure caused intestinal cell impairment and shifts in the gut microbial community of snails. Conjugation rate increased with PS particle sizes in the snail gut. After 4 days of exposure, significantly higher conjugation rates were observed in the gut exposed to 100 mg/L PS compared to 10 mg/L, however, this trend reversed after 16 days. Consistently, the abundances of conjugation relevant genes trfA and trbB shared similar trends to the conjugation ratios in the snail gut after PS exposure. Transconjugant diversity was much lower in 10 mg/L PS groups than in 100 mg/L PS treatments. Therefore, this study suggests that the presence of M/NPs would complicate management of ARG spread. The selection pressure exerted by M/NPs may sustain or even amplify the spread of ARGs in the gut of terrestrial animals even in the absence of antibiotics. It highlights the necessity of avoiding M/NPs intake as a part of comprehensive strategy for cubing ARG dissemination in the gut of animals.

Abstract:Microplastics can not only serve as vectors of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), but also they and even nanoplastics potentially affect the occurrence of ARGs in indigenous environmental microorganisms, which have aroused great concern for the development of antibiotic resistance. This article specifically reviews the effects of micro/nanoplastics (concentration, size, exposure time, chemical additives) and their interactions with other pollutants on environmental ARGs dissemination. The changes of horizontal genes transfer (HGT, i.e., conjugation, transformation and transduction) of ARGs caused by micro/nanoplastics were also summarized. Further, this review systematically sums up the mechanisms of micro/nanoplastics regulating HGT process of ARGs, including reactive oxygen species production, cell membrane permeability, transfer-related genes expression, extracellular polymeric substances production, and ARG donor-recipient adsorption/contaminants adsorption/biofilm formation. The underlying mechanisms in changes of bacterial communities induced by micro/nanoplastics were also discussed as it was an important factor for structuring the profile of ARGs in the actual environment, including causing environmental stress, providing carbon sources, forming biofilms, affecting pollutants distribution and environmental factors. This review contributes to a systematical understanding of the potential risks of antibiotic resistance dissemination caused by micro/nanoplastics and provokes thinking about perspectives for future research and the management of micro/nanoplastics and plastics.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) are increasingly recognized as a newly emerging pollutant in the environment. NPs can enable the colonization of microbial pathogens on their surfaces and adsorb toxic pollutants, such as heavy metals and residual antibiotics. Although the dissemination of plastic particles in water bodies and the atmosphere is widely studied, the dissemination of NPs and adsorbed pollutants on land, via biological means, is poorly understood. Since soil animals, such as the bacterivorous nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), are highly mobile, this raises the possibility that they play an active role in disseminating NPs and adsorbed pollutants. Here, we established that antibiotic-resistant bacteria could aggregate with antibiotic-adsorbed NPs to form antibiotic-adsorbed NP-antibiotic resistant bacteria (ANP-ARB) aggregates, using polymyxins (colistin) as a proof-of-concept. Colistin-resistant mcr-1 bearing Escherichia coli from a mixed population of resistant and sensitive bacteria selectively aggregate with colistin-ANPs. In the soil microcosm, C. elegans fed on ANP-ARB clusters, resulting in the rapid spread of ANP-ARB by the nematodes across the soil at a rate of 40-60 cm per day. Our work revealed insights into how NPs could still disseminate across the soil faster than previously thought by "hitching a ride" in soil animals and acting as agents of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and antibiotic contaminants. This poses direct risks to ecology, agricultural sustainability, and human health.

Abstract:Microplastics are prevalent in freshwater, coastal, and deep ocean sediments. However, the effects of microplastics on sedimentary microbial ecosystems have not been well reported. Using 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic sequencing, we investigated coastal sedimentary sludge microbial community structure, composition, function, assembly, and propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in response to different microplastics. The nitrifier, denitrifiers and ammonia oxidizer were significantly altered upon microplastics exposure. The concentrations of NO 3 − , NO 2 − , and NH 4 + in PE and PET treated groups were in consistent with relative abundances of corresponding functional genera. The increased antibiotic efflux ARGs abundance in PE, PET, and PVC groups was directly related to the promoted efflux pump system. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, ROS-mediated DNA damage, and increased stress response induced by microplastics exposure might be the reason for the promotion of ARGs transfer. Assembly of dominate nitrogen degrading genus and ARGs hosts tended to be deterministic under the pressure of microplastics, indicating the selective effect of microplastics.

Abstract:As two pollutants with similar transport pathways, microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics (ATs) inevitably co-exist in water environments, and their interaction has become a topic of intense research interest for scholars over the past few years. This paper comprehensively and systematically reviews the current interaction between MPs and ATs, in particular, the role played by biofilm developed MPs (microplastic biofilm). A summary of the formation process of microplastic biofilm and its unique microbial community structure is presented in the paper. The formation of microplastic biofilm can enhance the adsorption mechanisms of ATs on primary MPs. Moreover, microplastic biofilm system is a diverse and vast reservoir of genetic material, and this paper reviews the mechanisms by which microplastics with biofilm drive the production of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and the processes that selectively enrich for more ARGs. Meanwhile, the enrichment of ARGs may lead to the development of microbial resistance and the gradual loss of the antimicrobial effect of ATs. The transfer pathways of ARGs affected by microplastic biofilm are outlined, and ARGs dependent transfer of antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB) is mainly through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Furthermore, the ecological implications of the interaction between microplastic biofilm and ATs and perspectives for future research are reviewed. This review contributes to a new insight into the aquatic ecological environmental risks and the fate of contaminants (MPs, ATs), and is of great significance for controlling the combined pollution of these two pollutants.

Photoaged microplastics enhanced the antibiotic resistance dissemination in WWTPs by altering the adsorption behavior of antibiotic resistance plasmids

Abstract:Growing concerns have raised about the microplastic eco-coronas in the ultraviolet (UV) disinfection wastewater, which accelerated the pollution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the aquatic environment. As the hotspot of gene exchange, microplastics (MPs), especially for the UV-aged MPs, could alter the spread of ARGs in the eco-coronas and affect the resistance of the environment through adsorbing antibiotic resistant plasmids (ARPs). However, the relationship between the MP adsorption for ARPs and ARG spreading characteristics in MP eco-corona remain unclear. Herein, this study explored the distribution of ARGs in the MP eco-corona through in situ investigations of the discharged wastewater, and the adsorption behaviors of MPs for ARPs by in vitro adsorption experiments and in silico calculations. Results showed that the adsorption capacity of MPs for ARPs was enhanced by 42.7-48.0 % and the adsorption behavior changed from monolayer to multilayer adsorption after UV-aging. It was related to the increased surface roughness and oxygen-containing functional groups of MPs under UV treatment. Moreover, the abundance of ARGs in MP eco-corona of UV-treated wastewater was 1.33-1.55 folds higher than that without UV treatment, promoting the proliferation of drug resistance. DFT and DLVO theoretical calculations indicated that the MP-ARP interactions were dominated by electrostatic physical adsorption, endowing the aged MPs with low potential oxygen-containing groups to increase the electrostatic interaction with ARPs. Besides, due to the desorption of ARPs on MPs driven by the electrostatic repulsion, the bioavailability of ARGs in the MP eco-coronas was increased with pH and decreased with salinity after the wastewater discharge. Overall, this study advanced the understanding of the adsorption behavior of MPs for ARPs and provided inspirations for the evaluation of the resistance spread in the aquatic environment mediated by MP eco-coronas.

Abstract:Abstract Nanoparticles (NPs) and antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs), as emerging environmental contaminants, have been reported to be accumulated in the soil environment. The use of NPs have raised increasing concerns about their environmental impacts, but the combined effect of NPs and antibiotics on ARGs remains less understood. Here, we established laboratory microcosms to explore the impacts of different concentrations of SiO 2 NPs on β -lactam and sulfonamide resistance genes in soils amended with β -lactam or sulfonamide. Illumina sequencing and quantitative PCR revealed that the addition of NPs increased the bacterial community diversity but had no significant effects on the bacterial abundance. Moreover, NPs and sulfonamide jointly increased the abundances of sulfonamide resistance genes, while the exposure of NPs and β -lactam decreased β -lactam resistance genes. The detected ARGs were associated closely with two mobile genetic elements (MGEs, the tnp A and int I1 genes), indicating that MGEs may contribute to the dissemination of ARGs. Correlation analysis indicated the shifts in potential bacterial hosts and the frequency of horizontal gene transfer were important factors explaining the patterns of ARGs. Furthermore, structural equation models indicated that NPs exposure decreased the abundances of β -lactam resistance genes by driving changes in bacterial community and MGEs, whereas the increased abundances of sulfonamide resistance genes were mainly associated with the bacterial community, diversity and MGEs mediated by NPs and antibiotics. These results suggested that the combined effects of NPs and antibiotics on soil bacterial resistance were different due to the types of antibiotics.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) has been concerned as emerging vectors for spreading antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity in aquatic environments, but the role of biodegradable MPs remains largely unknown. Herein, field in-situ incubation method combined with metagenomic sequencing were employed to reveal the dispersal characteristics of microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and virulence factors (VFs) enriched by MPs biofilms. Results showed that planktonic microbes were more prone to enrich on biodegradable MPs (i.e., polyhydroxyalkanoate and polylactic acid) than non-biodegradable MPs (i.e., polystyrene, polypropylene and polyethylene). Distinctive microbial communities were assembled on biodegradable MPs, and the abundances of ARGs, MGEs, and VFs on biofilms of biodegradable MPs were much higher than that of non-biodegradable MPs. Notably, network analysis showed that the biodegradable MPs selectively enriched pathogens carrying ARGs, VFs and MGEs concurrently, suggesting a strong potential risks of co-spreading antibiotic resistance and pathogenicity through horizontal gene transfer. According to WHO priority list of Antibiotic Resistant Pathogens (ARPs) and ARGs health risk assessment framework, the highest abundances of Priority 1 ARPs and Rank I risk ARGs were found on polylactic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoate, respectively. These findings elucidate the unique and critical role of biodegradable MPs for selective enrichment of high-risk ARGs and priority pathogens in freshwater environments.

Abstract:Given that many organic pollutants have been reported to facilitate the plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), it was naturally deduced that nonylphenol (NP) can also have this kind of effect. Whereas, this study demonstrates an entirely different result that environmentally relevant concentrations of NP attenuate plasmid-mediated ARGs conjugative transfer (maximum inhibition rate 64 %), further study show that NP exposure had no significant effect on bacterial growth, cell vitality, oxidative stress response, and expression of conjugation-relevant genes, which were reported to closely relate to the conjugative transfer in numerous studies. Conclusively, it was found that the dispersant function of NP impeded the occurrence of cell mating, thus was responsible for the decline of conjugative transfer. This study shows a new perspective on understanding the effect of organic pollutants like NP on the ARGs horizontal dissemination in environment.
Polystyrene nanoplastics change the functional traits of biofilm communities in freshwater environment revealed by GeoChip 5.0

Abstract:There is an increasing concern regarding the potential effects of nanoplastics (NPs) on freshwater ecosystems. Considering the functional values of biofilms in freshwater, knowledge on whether and to what extent NPs can influence the ecosystem processes of biofilms were still limited. Herein, the freshwater biofilms cultured in lab were exposed to 100 nm polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs) of different dosages (1 and 10 mg/L) for 14 days. Confocal laser scanning microscope observation indicated that biofilms were dominated by filamentous, and spiral algae species and the intensity of extracellular polymeric substances increased under PS-NPs exposure. GeoChip 5.0 analysis revealed that PS-NPs exposure triggered a significant increase in functional genes α diversity (p < 0.05) and altered biofilms' functional structure. Furthermore, the abundance of genes involved in the total carbon and nitrogen cycling were increased under PS-NPs exposure. The abundance of nitrogen fixation genes experienced the most pronounced increase (24.4%) under 1 mg/L PS-NPs treatment, consistent with the increase of ammonium in overlying water. Whereas antibiotic resistance genes and those related to photosynthetic pigments production were suppressed. These results provided direct evidence for PS-NPs' effects on the biofilm functions in terms of biogeochemical cycling, improving our understanding of the potentials of NPs on freshwater ecosystems.

Impact of aging of primary and secondary polystyrene nanoplastics on the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes in anaerobic digestion

Abstract:Sewage sludge is a significant reservoir of nano/microplastics (NPs/MPs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Research has revealed that NPs/MPs may exert an inhibitory effect on anaerobic digestion (AD) of sludge. Moreover, NPs/MPs can influence microbial community diversity and composition, potentially increasing ARGs dissemination. The morphological changes to NPs/MPs surface due to aging contribute to modifying hydrophobic properties. To date, there is limited comprehension regarding how various surface properties of NPs influence ARGs dissemination during AD. This study investigated the impact of primary aged/non-aged and secondary aged/non-aged polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) on ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) propagation during AD. The findings indicated that the UV-aging process resulted in surface oxidation and distinct morphological characteristics in both primary and secondary PSNPs, while the surface oxidation effect was more pronounced in the secondary aged PSNPs. High concentrations (150 μg/L) of primary and secondary PSNPs inhibited methane production, with secondary PSNPs causing greater inhibition by 16 to 20 % compared to control. In contrast, low concentration (25 μg/L) had negligible or slightly positive effects on methane production. PSNPs at 150 μg/L reduced total VFA concentration, indicating an inhibitory effect on the fermentation step in the AD process. Primary and secondary PSNPs exhibited changes in EPS characteristics. ARGs abundance was enriched in reactors amended with PSNPs, with the highest abundance of 8.54 × 105 copies/g sludge observed in the secondary aged PSNPs (150 μg/L) reactor. Reactors exposed to aged PSNPs exhibited a relatively higher abundance of ARGs compared to reactors exposed to non-aged PSNPs. Exposure to PSNPs increased the microbial community diversity within the digesters and triggered the enrichment of Comamonadaceae and Syntrophaceae, belonging to Proteobacteria phylum. On the other hand, archaeal communities tended to shift towards hydrogenotrophic methanogens in PSNPs reactors. The correlation analysis showed that Comamonadaceae were positively correlated with the majority of ARGs and intl1. A positive correlation was observed between MGEs and most ARGs, suggesting that the increased proliferation of ARGs under PSNPs exposure may be linked to the abundance of MGEs, which in turn promotes the growth of hosts carrying ARGs. These findings suggest that aged and non-aged NPs could substantially impact the spread of ARGs and MGEs, which also led to notable alterations in the composition of the microbial community. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the multifaceted impacts of PSNPs with various characteristics on AD processes, microbial communities, and ARGs proliferation, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive assessments of NPs pollutants in the environment.
Ecotoxicological effects of antibiotic adsorption behavior of microplastics and its management measures

Abstract:Microplastics adsorb heavy metals and organic pollutants to produce combined pollution. Recently, the adsorption behavior of antibiotics on microplastics has received increasing attention. Exploring the sorption behavior of pollutants on microplastics is an important reference in understanding their ecological and environmental risk studies. In this paper, by reviewing the academic literature in recent years, we clarified the current status of research on the adsorption behavior of antibiotics on microplastics, discussed its potential hazards to ecological environment and human health, and summarized the influence of factors on the adsorption mechanisms. The results show that the adsorption behavior of antibiotics on microplastics is controlled by the physical and chemical properties of antibiotics, microplastics, and water environment. Antibiotics are adsorbed on microplastics through physical and chemical interactions, which include hydrophobic interaction, partitioning, electrostatic interaction, and other non-covalent interactions. Intensity of adsorption between them is mainly determined by their physicochemical properties. The basic physicochemical properties of the aqueous environment (e.g., pH, salinity, ionic strength, soluble organic matter content, and temperature) will affect the physicochemical properties of microplastics and antibiotics (e.g., particle size, state of dispersibility, and morphology), leading to differences in the type and strength of their interactions. This paper work is expected to provide a meaningful perspective for better understanding the potential impacts of antibiotic adsorption behavior of microplastics on aquatic ecology and human health. In the meantime, some indications for future related research are provided.

Abstract:The concerns on the carriers of microplastics (MPs) on co-existing pollutants in aquatic environments are sharply rising in recent years. However, little is known about their interactions on the colonization of microbiota, especially for the spread of pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the influences on the propagation of ARGs in sediments by the co-exposure of different MPs and sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The results showed that the presence of MPs significantly enhanced the contents of total organic carbon, while having no effects on the removal of SMX in sediments. Exposure to SMX and MPs obviously activated the microbial carbon utilization capacities based on the BIOLOG method. The propagation of ARGs in sediments was activated by SMX, which was further promoted by the presence of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs, but significantly lowered by the co-exposed polyethylene (PE) MPs. This apparent difference may be attributed to the distinct influence on the antibiotic efflux pumps of two MPs. Moreover, the propagation of ARGs may be also dominated by microbial carbon metabolism in sediments, especially through regulating the carbon sources of carboxylic acids, carbohydrates, and amino acids. This study provides new insights into the carrier effects of MPs in sediments.
