Abstract:This paper presents an asynchronous coarse-fine delay line based time to digital converter (TDC) applied to ADPLL. We develop asynchronous coarse-fine delay line architecture to balance measurement and resolution with lower power consumption. Auto control module is developed for switching between coarse and fine line. Phase detectable range is expanded for large frequency error tolerance. Implemented in SMIC 0.13um CMOS, TDC can achieve maximum measurement range of 60ns and minimum resolution of 72ps. Power consumption is 2.86mW (coarse line inactive) and 2.36mW (fine line inactive) on average at 1.2 V voltage supply.

Sustainability of a Firm's Reputation for Information Technology Capability: The Role of Senior IT Executives

Abstract:This study investigates the development and sustainability of a firm's information technology (IT) capability reputation from an IT executive's standpoint. Building on institutional theory, we argue that IT executives will try to achieve external legitimacy (i.e., project an image of superior IT capability to external stakeholders) in the hope that the top management team and board members will reciprocate by elevating the internal legitimacy of IT executives. Firms that develop such a culture of reciprocity with their IT executives are more likely to sustain their IT capability reputation. Econometric results based on panel data for 1,326 large U.S. firms from a wide spectrum of industries over a 13-year period (1997-2009) validate these predictions. More specifically, we find that IT executives with greater structural power (e.g., higher job titles) or IT-related expert power (e.g., IT-related education or experience) are more likely to attract public recognition for their firm's IT capability. Firms that build such an IT capability reputation are more likely to promote their IT executives, and IT executives who are promoted are more likely to stay longer with their firms. This continuity in IT strategic leadership is positively associated with the firm's ability to sustain its IT capability reputation. Our findings have important practical implications related to a firm's IT reputation strategy as well as the motivation and career of IT executives. Firms wanting to develop and sustain their IT capability reputation would do well to foster the creation of a cycle of positive reciprocity with their IT executives. IT executives hoping to increase their power within their firm's top management team and improve the legitimacy of the firm's IT organization need to project an image of IT superiority to external stakeholders.

Abstract:Pathology is regarded as the gold standard for diagnosis of cancer.Pathological analysis and prognosis are usually performed by pathologists,however,it could be time-consuming and labor-intensive.As the development of the whole slide pathology,it is thanks to artificial intelligence (AI) gradually promote the transition from qualitative analysis to quantitative analysis.In recent years,the AI technology,especially deep neural network,has greatly promoted the progress of pathological diagnosis,which is more intelligentialized,accurate and repeatable.This paper describes the basic concept of deep learning and its application in digital pathology analysis.We give a brief overview of the application of deep learning in detection and segmentation of cell and tissue,classification and grading of cancer,and other applications.Finally,we propose the existing problems and the prospect of future development in the analysis of digital pathology.

Abstract:Background: With the rapid development of the internet, the improvement of computer capabilities, and the continuous advancement of algorithms, deep learning has developed rapidly in recent years and has been widely applied in many fields. Previous studies have shown that deep learning has an excellent performance in image processing, and deep learning-based medical image processing may help solve the difficulties faced by traditional medical image processing. This technology has attracted the attention of many scholars in the fields of computer science and medicine. This study mainly summarizes the knowledge structure of deep learning-based medical image processing research through bibliometric analysis and explores the research hotspots and possible development trends in this field. Methods: Retrieve the Web of Science Core Collection database using the search terms "deep learning," "medical image processing," and their synonyms. Use CiteSpace for visual analysis of authors, institutions, countries, keywords, co-cited references, co-cited authors, and co-cited journals. Results: The analysis was conducted on 562 highly cited papers retrieved from the database. The trend chart of the annual publication volume shows an upward trend. Pheng-Ann Heng, Hao Chen, and Klaus Hermann Maier-Hein are among the active authors in this field. Chinese Academy of Sciences has the highest number of publications, while the institution with the highest centrality is Stanford University. The United States has the highest number of publications, followed by China. The most frequent keyword is "Deep Learning," and the highest centrality keyword is "Algorithm." The most cited author is Kaiming He, and the author with the highest centrality is Yoshua Bengio. Conclusion: The application of deep learning in medical image processing is becoming increasingly common, and there are many active authors, institutions, and countries in this field. Current research in medical image processing mainly focuses on deep learning, convolutional neural networks, classification, diagnosis, segmentation, image, algorithm, and artificial intelligence. The research focus and trends are gradually shifting toward more complex and systematic directions, and deep learning technology will continue to play an important role.

Abstract:Aims: Pathology education is a core component of medical training, and its literature is critical for refining educational modalities. We performed a cross-sectional bibliometric analysis to explore publications on pathology education, focusing on new medical education technologies. Methods: The analysis identified 64 pathology journals and 53 keywords. Relevant articles were collected using a web application, PaperScraper, developed to accelerate literature search. Citation data were collected from multiple sources. Descriptive statistics, with time period analysis, were performed using Microsoft Excel and visualised with Flourish Studio. Two article groups were further investigated with a bibliometric software, VOSViewer, to establish co-authorship and keyword relationships. Results: 8946 citations were retrieved from 905 selected articles. Most articles were published in the last decade (447, 49.4%). The top journals were Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (184), Human Pathology (122) and the American Journal of Clinical Pathology (117). The highest number of citations was found for Human Pathology (2120), followed by Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine (2098) and American Journal of Clinical Pathology (1142). Authors with different backgrounds had the greatest number of articles and citations. 12 co-authorship, 3 keyword and 8 co-citation clusters were found for the social media/online resources group, 8 co-authorship, 4 keyword and 7 co-citation clusters for the digital pathology/virtual microscopy/mobile technologies group. Conclusions: The analysis revealed a significant increase in publications over time. The emergence of digital teaching and learning resources played a major role in this growth. Overall, these findings underscore the transformative potential of technology in pathology education.

Abstract:In a recent paper, we pointed out that mixing of the light neutrinos with heavy gauge singlet states could reconcile the Z-pole data from e + e − colliders and the �� (¯�� ) scattering data from the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. We further noted that the mixing angle required to fit the data is much larger than what would be expected from the conventional seesaw mechanism. In this paper, we show how such mixings can be arranged by a judicious choice of the neutrino mass texture. We also argue that by invoking the unification of the Dirac mass matrix for the up-type quarks and the neutrinos, the mass of the heavy states can naturally be expected to lie in the few TeV range. The model is strongly constrained by the lepton flavor changing process µ → e which requires lepton universality to be violated in the charged channel.

Abstract:This article aims to analyze and visualize the structure and the emerging trend of digital medicine, a new medical pattern of twenty-first century. Our study objectively explores the document co-citation clusters of 6060 bibliographic records to identify the origin of digital medicine and the hot research specialty of domain. Pivotal point articles, prominent authors, active disciplines and institution have been identified by network analysis theory. CiteSpace was used to visualize the perspective of digital medicine domain. As an interdiscipline which integrated computer science, information engineering with medicine, digital medicine originally and mainly on digital medical imaging technology research for accuracy and speedy clinical diagnosis and therapy. Of 6060 relevant records reviewed, 1719 (28 %) are on radiology, 902 (15 %) are on engineering, 539 (9 %) are on computer science. The largest co-citation cluster is on digital tomosynthesis. The earliest cluster is on medical imaging segmentation and registration. Post-processing imaging technology, detector, phase contrast, reversible watermarking, input, model 3D reconstruct, real-time dynamic imaging, dosimetry have been the hot research topics. The recently cluster is on internet health information. Harvard University of USA is the prominent institution. The coverage of digital medicine research is widely from clinic to laboratory. Recent year, domain research front is thematically on teleradiology, telemedicine and hospital information management system.

Abstract:The advent of affordable technology has significantly influenced the practice of digital pathology, leading to its growing adoption within the pathology community. This review article aimed to outline the latest developments in digital pathology, the cutting-edge advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) applications within this field, and the pertinent United States regulatory frameworks. The content is based on a thorough analysis of original research articles and official United States Federal guidelines. Findings from our review indicate that several Food and Drug Administration-approved digital scanners and image management systems are establishing a solid foundation for the seamless integration of advanced technologies into everyday pathology workflows, which may reduce device and operational costs in the future. AI is particularly transforming the way morphologic diagnoses are automated, notably in cancers like prostate and colorectal, within screening initiatives, albeit challenges such as data privacy issues and algorithmic biases remain. The regulatory environment, shaped by standards from the Food and Drug Administration, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services/Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and College of American Pathologists, is evolving to accommodate these innovations while ensuring safety and reliability. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services/Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments have issued policies to allow pathologists to review and render diagnoses using digital pathology remotely. Moreover, the introduction of new digital pathology Current Procedural Terminology codes designed to complement existing pathology Current Procedural Terminology codes is facilitating reimbursement processes. Overall, these advancements are heralding a new era in pathology that promises enhanced diagnostic precision and efficiency through digital and AI technologies, potentially improving patient care as well as bolstering educational and research activities.

Abstract:Recent years witnessed remarkable progress in computational histopathology, largely fueled by deep learning. This brought the clinical adoption of deep learning-based tools within reach, promising significant benefits to healthcare, offering a valuable second opinion on diagnoses, streamlining complex tasks, and mitigating the risks of inconsistency and bias in clinical decisions. However, a well-known challenge is that deep learning models may contain up to billions of parameters; supervising their training effectively would require vast labeled datasets to achieve reliable generalization and noise resilience. In medical imaging, particularly histopathology, amassing such extensive labeled data collections places additional demands on clinicians and incurs higher costs, which hinders the art's progress. Addressing this challenge, researchers devised various strategies for leveraging deep learning with limited data and annotation availability. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of deep learning applications in histopathology, with a focus on the challenges posed by data scarcity over the past decade. We systematically categorize and compare various approaches, evaluate their distinct contributions using benchmarking tables, and highlight their respective advantages and limitations. Additionally, we address gaps in existing reviews and identify underexplored research opportunities, underscoring the potential for future advancements in this field.

Abstract:Objective Digital pathology (DP) is currently in the spotlight and is rapidly gaining ground, even though the history of this field spans decades. Despite great technological progress, the adoption of DP for routine clinical diagnostic use remains limited. Methods A systematic search was conducted in the electronic databases Pubmed-MEDLINE and Embase. Inclusion criteria were all published studies that encompassed any application of DP. Results Of 4888 articles retrieved, 4041 were included. Relevant articles were categorized as “diagnostic” (147/4041, 4%) where DP was utilized for routine diagnostic workflow and “non-diagnostic” (3894/4041, 96%) for all other applications. The “non-diagnostic” articles were further categorized according to DP application including “artificial intelligence” (33%), “education” (5%), “narrative” (17%) for reviews and editorials, and “technical” (45%) for pure research publications. Conclusion This manuscript provided temporal and geographical insight into the global adoption of DP by analyzing the published scientific literature.

Abstract:Deep learning (DL) has achieved state-of-the-art performance in many digital pathology analysis tasks. Traditional methods usually require hand-crafted domain-specific features, and DL methods can learn representations without manually designed features. In terms of feature extraction, DL approaches are less labor intensive compared with conventional machine learning methods. In this paper, we comprehensively summarize recent DL-based image analysis studies in histopathology, including different tasks (e.g., classification, semantic segmentation, detection, and instance segmentation) and various applications (e.g., stain normalization, cell/gland/region structure analysis). DL methods can provide consistent and accurate outcomes. DL is a promising tool to assist pathologists in clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:In modern clinical practice, digital pathology has an essential role, being a technological necessity for the activity in the pathological anatomy laboratories. The development of information technology has majorly facilitated the management of digital images and their sharing for clinical use; the methods to analyze digital histopathological images, based on artificial intelligence techniques and specific models, quantify the required information with significantly higher consistency and precision compared to that provided by optical microscopy. In parallel, the unprecedented advances in machine learning facilitate, through the synergy of artificial intelligence and digital pathology, the possibility of diagnosis based on image analysis, previously limited only to certain specialties. Therefore, the integration of digital images into the study of pathology, combined with advanced algorithms and computer-assisted diagnostic techniques, extends the boundaries of the pathologist's vision beyond the microscopic image and allows the specialist to use and integrate his knowledge and experience adequately. We conducted a search in PubMed on the topic of digital pathology and its applications, to quantify the current state of knowledge. We found that computer-aided image analysis has a superior potential to identify, extract and quantify features in more detail compared to the human pathologist's evaluating possibilities; it performs tasks that exceed its manual capacity, and can produce new diagnostic algorithms and prediction models applicable in translational research that are able to identify new characteristics of diseases based on changes at the cellular and molecular level.

Abstract:Abstract In common medical procedures, the time-consuming and expensive nature of obtaining test results plagues doctors and patients. Digital pathology research allows using computational technologies to manage data, presenting an opportunity to improve the efficiency of diagnosis and treatment. Artificial intelligence (AI) has a great advantage in the data analytics phase. Extensive research has shown that AI algorithms can produce more up-to-date and standardized conclusions for whole slide images. In conjunction with the development of high-throughput sequencing technologies, algorithms can integrate and analyze data from multiple modalities to explore the correspondence between morphological features and gene expression. This review investigates using the most popular image data, hematoxylin–eosin stained tissue slide images, to find a strategic solution for the imbalance of healthcare resources. The article focuses on the role that the development of deep learning technology has in assisting doctors’ work and discusses the opportunities and challenges of AI.

Abstract:The integration of digital pathology (DP) with artificial intelligence (AI) enables faster, more accurate, and thorough diagnoses, leading to more precise personalized treatment. As technology is advancing rapidly, it is critical to understand the current state of AI applications in DP. Therefore, a patent analysis of AI in DP is required to assess the application and publication trends, major assignees, and leaders in the field. We searched five major patent databases, namely, those of the USPTO, EPO, KIPO, JPO, and CNIPA, from 1974 to 2021, using keywords such as DP, AI, machine learning, and deep learning. We discovered 6284 patents, 523 of which were used for trend analyses on time series, international distribution, top assignees; word cloud analysis; and subject category analyses. Patent filing and publication have increased exponentially over the past five years. The United States has published the most patents, followed by China and South Korea (248, 117, and 48, respectively). The top assignees were Paige.AI, Inc. (New York City, NY, USA) and Siemens, Inc. (Munich, Germany) The primary areas were whole-slide imaging, segmentation, classification, and detection. Based on these findings, we expect a surge in DP and AI patent applications focusing on the digitalization of pathological images and AI technologies that support the vital role of pathologists.

Abstract:Objective: Artificial intelligence (AI), with its potential to diagnose skin cancer, has the potential to revolutionize future medical and dermatological practices. However, the current knowledge regarding the utilization of AI in skin cancer diagnosis remains somewhat limited, necessitating further research. This study employs visual bibliometric analysis to consolidate and present insights into the evolution and deployment of AI in the context of skin cancer. Through this analysis, we aim to shed light on the research developments, focal areas of interest, and emerging trends within AI and its application to skin cancer diagnosis. Methods: On July 14, 2023, articles and reviews about the application of AI in skin cancer, spanning the years from 1900 to 2023, were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection. Co-authorship, co-citation, and co-occurrence analyses of countries, institutions, authors, references, and keywords within this field were conducted using a combination of tools, including CiteSpace V (version 6.2. R3), VOSviewer (version 1.6.18), SCImago, Microsoft Excel 2019, and R 4.2.3. Results: A total of 512 papers matching the search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria were published between 1991 and 2023. The United States leads in publications with 149, followed by India with 61. Germany holds eight positions among the top 10 institutions, while the United States has two. The most prevalent journals cited were Cancer , the European Journal of Cancer , and Sensors . The most frequently cited keywords include "skin cancer", "classification", "artificial intelligence", and "deep learning". Conclusions: Research into the application of AI in skin cancer is rapidly expanding, and an increasing number of scholars are dedicating their efforts to this field. With the advancement of AI technology, new opportunities have arisen to enhance the accuracy of skin imaging diagnosis, treatment based on big data, and prognosis prediction. However, at present, the majority of AI research in the field of skin cancer diagnosis is still in the feasibility study stage. It has not yet made significant progress toward practical implementation in clinical settings. To make substantial strides in this field, there is a need to enhance collaboration between countries and institutions. Despite the potential benefits of AI in skin cancer research, numerous challenges remain to be addressed, including developing robust algorithms, resolving data quality issues, and enhancing results interpretability. Consequently, sustained efforts are essential to surmount these obstacles and facilitate the practical application of AI in skin cancer research.

Abstract:This paper aimed to identify the technology frontiers of artificial intelligence-assisted pathology based on patent citation network. Patents related to artificial intelligence-assisted pathology were searched and collected from the Derwent Innovation Index (DII), which were imported into Derwent Data Analyzer (DDA, Clarivate Derwent, New York, NY, USA) for authority control, and imported into the freely available computer program Ucinet 6 for drawing the patent citation network. The patent citation network according to the citation relationship could describe the technology development context in the field of artificial intelligence-assisted pathology. The patent citations were extracted from the collected patent data, selected highly cited patents to form a co-occurrence matrix, and built a patent citation network based on the co-occurrence matrix in each period. Text clustering is an unsupervised learning method, an important method in text mining, where similar documents are grouped into clusters. The similarity between documents are determined by calculating the distance between them, and the two documents with the closest distance are combined. The method of text clustering was used to identify the technology frontiers based on the patent citation network, which was according to co-word analysis of the title and abstract of the patents in this field. 1704 patents were obtained in the field of artificial intelligence-assisted pathology, which had been currently undergoing three stages, namely the budding period (1992–2000), the development period (2001–2015), and the rapid growth period (2016–2021). There were two technology frontiers in the budding period (1992–2000), namely systems and methods for image data processing in computerized tomography (CT), and immunohistochemistry (IHC), five technology frontiers in the development period (2001–2015), namely spectral analysis methods of biomacromolecules, pathological information system, diagnostic biomarkers, molecular pathology diagnosis, and pathological diagnosis antibody, and six technology frontiers in the rapid growth period (2016–2021), namely digital pathology (DP), deep learning (DL) algorithms—convolutional neural networks (CNN), disease prediction models, computational pathology, pathological image analysis method, and intelligent pathological system. Artificial intelligence-assisted pathology was currently in a rapid development period, and computational pathology, DL and other technologies in this period all involved the study of algorithms. Future research hotspots in this field would focus on algorithm improvement and intelligent diagnosis in order to realize the precise diagnosis. The results of this study presented an overview of the characteristics of research status and development trends in the field of artificial intelligence-assisted pathology, which could help readers broaden innovative ideas and discover new technological opportunities, and also served as important indicators for government policymaking.

Abstract:Digital pathology is revolutionizing pathology. The introduction of digital pathology made it possible to comprehensively change the pathology diagnosis workflow, apply and develop pathological artificial intelligence (AI) models, generate pathological big data, and perform telepathology. AI algorithms, including machine learning and deep learning, are used for the detection, segmentation, registration, processing, and classification of digitized pathological images. Pathological AI algorithms can be helpfully utilized for diagnostic screening, morphometric analysis of biomarkers, the discovery of new meanings of prognosis and therapeutic response in pathological images, and improvement of diagnostic efficiency. In order to develop a successful pathological AI model, it is necessary to consider the selection of a suitable type of image for a subject, utilization of big data repositories, the setting of an effective annotation strategy, image standardization, and color normalization. This review will elaborate on the advantages and perspectives of digital pathology, AI-based approaches, the applications in pathology, and considerations and challenges in the development of pathological AI models.

Abstract:Background: Digital pathology, in its primary meaning, describes the utilization of computer screens to view scanned histology slides. Digitized tissue sections can be easily shared for a second opinion. In addition, it allows tissue image analysis using specialized software to identify and measure events previously observed by a human observer. These tissue-based readouts were highly reproducible and precise. Digital pathology has developed over the years through new technologies. Currently, the most discussed development is the application of artificial intelligence to automatically analyze tissue images. However, even new label-free imaging technologies are being developed to allow imaging of tissues by means of their molecular composition. Summary: This review provides a summary of the current state-of-the-art and future digital pathologies. Developments in the last few years have been presented and discussed. In particular, the review provides an outlook on interesting new technologies (e.g., infrared imaging), which would allow for deeper understanding and analysis of tissue thin sections beyond conventional histopathology. Key Messages: In digital pathology, mathematical methods are used to analyze images and draw conclusions about diseases and their progression. New innovative methods and techniques (e.g., label-free infrared imaging) will bring significant changes in the field in the coming years.
