Abstract:Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emitted from the petrochemical industry is a typical volatile organic sulfur compound (VOSC) with poor solubility and odorous smell. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is regarded as an appreciative method for simultaneous DMS degradation and electricity generation. In this work, for the first time, we developed an MFC system for DMS treatment. With an initial concentration of 95 mg L–1, the DMS removal efficiency at the closed-circuit state was achieved as high as 89.5% within 40 h, which was 1.21 times higher than that at the open-circuit state. The maximum power density and current density were 0.237 mW m–2 and 2.644 mA m–2, respectively. The dominant electrogenic bacteria in the MFC were Stenotrophomonas, Pseudomonas, and Candidatus Microthrix, and the DMS degraders included Thiobacillus, Truepera, and Candidatus Microthrix. Direct extracellular electron transfer was involved in the bioanode for DMS degradation according to the CV curves. Moreover, to overcome the toxicity of high-concentration DMS on microorganisms and enhance power generation, sodium acetate (NaAc) was added as a co-substrate, resulting in 52.5% increase in DMS degradation activity and a 16.5 times higher maximum output voltage. Overall, these findings may offer basic information for bioelectrochemical degradation of DMS and facilitate the application of MFCs in waste gas treatment.

Abstract:Microbial electrolysis cells (MEC), coupled with sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), was used to degrade sulfate-rich wastewater that is deficient in electron donors. However, because of the impact of electric double layers (EDLs), salt crystals formed on the electrode, thereby potentially retarding the continuity of sulfate removal during the whole operation. Here, an improved MEC reactor using intermittent electric field was established. It works better in sulfate removal for a longer period, which was higher than the conventional MEC reactor by 2.18-fold after 10 days. Observation on the activity of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and ATP revealed that the formation of salt crystals on the electrode led to plasmatorrhexis. Conversely, improved reactor contributed to extracellular substances production and prevented the salt crystal formation, which was conducive to biofilm formation as further verified by detection through SEM. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests showed that the cathodic microorganisms accelerated electron transfer whereas the salt crystals increased the charge transfer resistance. High-throughput sequencing analysis illustrated that improved reactor could maintain the competitiveness of SRB in the microbial community for a longer period. Moreover, the improved reactor resulted in high species diversity, thereby showing the significant resistance of the microorganisms to arduous environments. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Comparison of Sulfide Removal and Electricity Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Comparison of air-cathode single chamber and double chamber Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for sulfide-containing wastewater treatment was carried out. It was found that sulfide containing wastewater could be treated based on MFC technology with energy recovery. The maximum open circuit voltage of 897.2 mV and 821.7 mV, maximum power density of 340.0 mW/m2 and 273.8 mW/m2, and the coulombic efficiency (CE) of 5.6% and 10.7% were realized in the single chamber and double chamber MFCs, respectively, with influent sulfide 100 mg/L and glucose 812 mg/L. Single chamber MFCs had higher performance in electricity output, but double chamber ones had a higher CE. After 72 hours operation of the single chamber MFCs, sulfide and TOC removal efficiencies reached 75.4% and 17.8%, respectively. Results indicate the feasibility of sulfide removal in MFCs and the cathode resistance is recognized as the main limiting factor in the reported system.
Potential Steered Sulfur Metabolism in Microbial Fuel Cell for Rapid Dimethyl Disulfide Degradation and Boosted S0 Recovery

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) could facilitate biodegradation of organic pollutants and recover electric power. To enhance the removal capacity of dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and steer the sulfur conversion route, a potential steered approach is proposed in this work. Among -0.35 V, -0.16 V, +0.17 V, and +0.73 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) for bioanode acclimation, the potential of -0.35 V is proved to optimally enhance the power generation. Both of the two negative potentials increase the DMDS removal capacity by 1.54-fold, while the potential of -0.35 V is favor for S2- accumulation, and -0.16 V stimulates the yield of S0 by 100 %. Furthermore, the anode potential is found to affect the microbial community and thus steer the MFC performance. Conversely, its steering effect on the transmembrane and extracellular electron transfer groups is limited. Overall, these findings provide fundamental information on rapid DMDS degradation and S0 recovery in MFC.

Abstract:Dichloromethane (DCM) has been listed as a toxic and harmful water pollutant, and its removal needs attention. Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are viewed as a promising alternative for pollutant removal, which can be strengthened from two aspects: microbial inoculation and acclimation. In this study, the MEC for DCM degradation was inoculated with the active sludge enhanced by Methylobacterium rhodesianum H13 (strain H13) and then acclimated in the form of a microbial fuel cell (MFC). Both the introduction of strain H13 and the initiation in MFC form significantly promoted DCM degradation. The degradation kinetics were fitted by the Haldane model, with V max, K h, K i and v max values of 103.2 mg/L/hr, 97.8 mg/L, 268.3 mg/L and 44.7 mg/L/hr/cm2, respectively. The cyclic voltammogram implies that DCM redox reactions became easier with the setup of MEC, and the electrochemical impedance spectrogram shows that the acclimated and enriched microbes reduced the charge transfer resistance from the electrode to the electrolyte. In the biofilm, the dominant genera shifted from Geobacter to Hyphomicrobium in acclimation stages. Moreover, Methylobacterium played an increasingly important role. DCM metabolism mainly occurred through the hydrolytic glutathione S-transferase pathway, given that the gene dcmA was identified rather than the dhlA and P450/MO. The exogenous electrons facilitated the reduction of GSSG, directly or indirectly accelerating the GSH-catalyzed dehalogenation. This study provides support for the construction of an efficient and stable MEC for DCM removal in water environment.

Synchronously degradation of biogas slurry and triphenyltin chloride in microbial fuel cell

Abstract:As a novel electrochemical apparatus for synchronous electricity generation and decontamination, microbial fuel cell (MFC) provides a way to effectively deal with the refractory pollutant. A new method of electricity production by anodic biogas slurry coupling with cathodic triphenyltin chloride degradation was proposed based on the cathodic "Fenton" reaction in a typical dual-chamber MFC. The results showed that the maximum voltage was 50.32% higher and the stable time of the voltage was 2 times longer after biofilms domestication. In the end of the operation, the removal efficiency of COD, Total N and Total P of the biogas slurry were 85.35%±1.53%, 59.20%±5.24% and 44.98%±3.57%, respectively. Besides, the triphenyltin chloride (TPTC) degradation efficiency decreased with increasing initial concentration. In addition, when 100 μmol·L?1 TPTC was added to the cathodic chamber, the highest output voltage and the maximum power density of the MFC arrived at 280.2 mV and 145.62 mW·m?2, respectively. TPTC was removed after 14 d with the degradation of 91.88% and a rate of about 0.273 μmol·L?1·h?1. This study provided the foundational supports for simultaneously decomposing anodic organic effluent and cathodic organic pollution by MFC.

Abstract:A novel membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) which used the baffles instead of the ion exchange membrane (IEM) was developed for ammonium-containing wastewater treatment and electricity generation. By means of installing an ideal nitrifying unit between the anodic and cathodic chamber, the novel ML-MFC accomplished organics degradation and nitrogen removal without additional loop. The removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N and TN achieved 97.07 +/- 0.47%, 91.76 +/- 3.32% and 87.66 +/- 1.59%, respectively. Meanwhile, the effluent pH was near neutral and turbidity was quite low. In addition, the maximum power density of 1.007 +/- 0.032W/m(3) was obtained. Combined with the analysis of microbial community, electroactive bacteria (EAB) Desulfovibrio, Comamonas and Thiobacillus were enriched in biofilm. Considering the superior effluent quality and the promising energy potential, the novel ML-MFC has good application prospects in efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.
Remediation of Simulated Malodorous Surface Water by Columnar Air-Cathode Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Malodorous surface water is an important worldwide environmental concern. Current remechation methods, such as aeration or the addition of chemicals, are not eco-friendly clue to their high energy consumption or secondary pollution. This study proposed a modified columnar air -cathode microbial fuel cell as a sustainable and effective remediation module to improve water quality. The excellent and economic sheet air -cathode (activated carbon and carbon black as the catalyst layer) and a carbon brush anode were applied in the columnar air -cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC). The results after 48 h showed that by providing the anode as an electron acceptor and enriching electrochemically -active bacteria, MFCs with different external resistances (5 k Omega, 30 Omega, and 2 Omega) exhibited the much better capacity to improve water quality than the Blank group. The maximum COD and sulfide removal rates in the MFCs were approximately 86.3% and 10008, respectively, which were higher than those of the Blank group by 30% and 35%, respectively. The MFCs also showed maximum sulfate increments from 28 mg L-1 to 98 mg L-1 compared with the sulfate reduction to 10 mg L-1 in the Blank group. The oxidation reduction potential (ORP) of the Mils dramatically increased from -281.2 mV to -135.7 mV after 24 h, whereas the ORP of the Blank group decreased to -287.7 mV. The enrichment of the aerobic bacteria Acinetobacter on the anodes and chemolithoautotrophic sulfide oxidation bacteria Sulturicurvum, Thiovirga and Thiobacillus in the MFCs could also contribute to COD and sulfide removal. Cathode reduction, which could produce small amounts of hydroxyl radicals, might assist with the ORP elevation and the complete oxidation of dissolved sulfide to sulfate. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sulfide-containing wastewater (also containing organics) and vanadium(V)-containing wastewater exist widely and can be treated in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) based on their chemical conditions. A novel process has been investigated using MFC technologies by employing sulfide, organics and V(V) as electron donors and acceptor, respectively. RESULTS: Electrons produced by oxidation of sulfide and organics in the anode compartment were transferred to the anode surface, then flowed to the cathode through an external circuit, where they were consumed to reduce V(V). Sulfide and total organics removal approached 84.7 +/- 2.8% and 20.7 +/- 2.1%, with a V(V) reduction rate of 25.3 +/- 1.1%. The maximum power output obtained was 572.4 +/- 18.2 mW m(-2). The effects of the microbes on electricity generation as well as the products of sulfide oxidation and V(V) reduction were also evaluated and analyzed. CONCLUSION: This process achieves both sulfide and V(V) removal with electricity generation simultaneously, providing an economical route for treating these kinds of wastewaters. Enhancement of gaseous o-xylene degradation in a microbial fuel cell by adding Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

Abstract:An exoelectrogens, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (S. oneidensis MR-1), was supplied to a microbial fuel cell (MFC) to enhance the degradation of a recalcitrant organic compound, o-xylene. The experimental results revealed that, with the addition of the S. oneidensis MR-1, the o-xylene removal efficiency increased by 35-76% compared with the original MFC. The presence of the S. oneidensis MR-1 not only improved the activity of the biofilm in the bioanode but also developed the connections between the bacteria by nanowires. Therefore, the maximum power density increased from 52.1 to 92.5 mW/m3 after the addition of the S. oneidensis MR-1. The microbial community analysis showed that adding the S. oneidensis MR-1 increased the biodiversity in bioanode. The dominant exoelectrogens shifted from Zoogloea sp., Delftia sp., Achromobacter sp., Acinetobacter sp., Chryseobacterium sp., and Stenotrophomonas sp. to Zoogloea sp., Delftia sp., Shewanella sp., Achromobacter sp., Hydrogenophaga sp., Sedimentibacter sp. and Chryseobacterium sp.. Furthermore, the cyclic voltammetry analysis showed that the outer membrane bound protein complex of OmcA-MtrCAB was involved as direct electron transfer pathway in the S. oneidensis MR-1 containing bioanode. We believed that this work is promising to provide optional strategy for efficient VOCs degradation by adjusting the microbial community in the bioanode.
Biofilm metagenomic characteristics behind high coulombic efficiency for propanethiol deodorization in two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell

Abstract:Hydrophobic volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs) are frequently found during sewage treatment, and their effective management is crucial for reducing malodorous complaints. Microbial fuel cells (MFC) are effective for both VOSCs abatement and energy recovery. However, the performance of MFC on VOSCs remains limited by the mass transfer efficiency of MFC in aqueous media. Inspired by two-phase partitioning biotechnology, silicone oil was introduced for the first time into MFC as a non-aqueous phase (NAP) medium to construct two-phase partitioning microbial fuel cell (TPPMFC) and augment the mass transfer of target VOSCs of propanethiol (PT) in the liquid phase. The PT removal efficiency within 32 h increased by 11–20% compared with that of single-phase MFC, and the coulombic efficiency of TPPMFC (11.01%) was 4.32–2.68 times that of single-phase MFC owing to the fact that highly active desulfurization and thiol-degrading bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas, Achromobacter ) were attached to the silicone oil surface, whereas sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (e.g., Thiobacillus, Commonas, Ottowia ) were dominant on the anodic biofilm. The outer membrane cytochrome-c content and NADH dehydrogenase activity improved by 4.15 and 3.36 times in the TPPMFC, respectively. The results of metagenomics by KEGG and COG confirmed that the metabolism of PT in TPPMFC was comprehensive, and that the addition of a NAP upregulates the expression of genes related to sulfur metabolism, energy generation, and amino acid synthesis. This finding indicates that the NAP assisted bioelectrochemical systems would be promising to solve mass-transfer restrictions in low solubility contaminates removal.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are an emerging technique presenting remarkable potential. In the current MFC, an electroactive biofilm anode was inoculated with activated sludge from a local municipal sewage treatment plant. The output voltage peaked at 0.60 V and 0.56 V in MFCs cultured with 2-chlorophenol (MFC-2-CP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (MFC-2,4-DCP), respectively. The degradation and mineralization efficiency in MFC-2-CP were 100.0% and 82.0%, respectively. Based on the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, abundant Acinetobacter and Azospirillum existed during both the bioelectricity and biodegradation stages in MFC-2-CP, but different patterns were exhibited in MFC-2,4-DCP. The electrogenic bacteria relied on the electron transfer pathway of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase, succinate dehydrogenase and terminal oxidase, while the electrons were transferred to the extracellular electrode by cytochrome C, riboflavin, degradation products of CPs and flagella. 2-CP and 2,4-DCP were biodegraded into less toxic cyclohexanol via dichlorination, hydroxylation, and hydrogenation; hereafter, the ring was opened to generate long-chain hydrocarbons, and finally mineralized into CO2 and H2O. This work provided a new strategy for MFCs in power generation and contaminant treatment.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), representing a promising method to treat combined pollutants with energy recovery, were utilized to remove sulfide and recover power with corn stover filtrate (CSF) as the co-substrate in present study. A maximum power density of 744 mW/m(2) was achieved with sulfide removal of 91% during 72 h operation when the CSF concentrations (mg-COD/l) and the electrolyte conductivity were set at 800 mg/l and 10.06 mS/cm, respectively, while almost 52% COD was removed due to the microbial degradation of CSF to the volatile organic carbons. CSF concentrations and electrolyte conductivities had significant effects on the performance of the MFCs. Simultaneous removals of inorganic pollutant and complex organic compounds with electricity generation in MFCs are reported for the first time. These results provide a good reference for multiple contaminations treatment especially sulfide containing wastewaters based on the MFC technology.

Abstract:PURPOSE Studies have shown that functional analysis of knee cartilage based on magnetic resonance (MR) relaxation times is a valuable tool in the understanding of osteoarthritis (OA). In this work, the regional spatial distribution of knee cartilage T1rho, and T2 relaxation times based on texture and laminar analyses was studied to investigate if they provide additional insight compared to global mean values in the study of OA. METHODS Knee cartilage of 36 subjects, 19 healthy controls and 17 with mild OA, was divided into 16 compartments. T1rho and T2 relaxation times were studied with first order statistics, eight texture parameters with four different orientations using gray-level co-occurrence matrices and by subdividing each compartment into two different layers: Deep and superficial. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was performed to evaluate the potential of each technique to correctly classify the populations. RESULTS Although the deep and superficial cartilage layers had in general significantly different T1rho and T2 relaxation times, they performed similarly in terms of subject discrimination. The subdivision of lateral and medial femoral compartments into weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing regions did not improve discrimination. Also it was found that the most sensitive region was the patella and that T1rho discriminated better than T2. The most important finding was that with respect to global mean values, laminar and texture analyses improved subject discrimination. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study suggest that spatially assessing MR images of the knee cartilage relaxation times using laminar and texture analyses could lead to better and probably earlier identification of cartilage matrix abnormalities in subjects with OA.

Abstract:The authors have measured the depth of the patellar groove in a 100 human cadavers. An angle of about 143 degrees have been found to be present in normal knees, confirming the work of Brattström. When the angle was more than 150 degrees, the groove was considered to be dysplastic and likely to lead to patellar instability. In contrast when the angle was less than 138 degrees, the groove was thought to be excessively deep. This was present in 19 cases, in 13 of which there were obvious lesions of the articular cartilage. This study in cadavers has been confirmed by a scan study of 148 patients complaining of femoro-patellar syndrome. Deep patellar grooves were frequent in this series, the mean angle being 129 degrees. 80 p. 100 of the patients had an angle less than 135 degrees. It is concluded that deep patellar grooves with a lower angle than normal favour the development of patellar chondromalacia.
Maximizing electron flux, microbial diversity and gene abundance in MFC powered electro-Fenton system by optimizing co-addition of lysozyme and 2-bromoethanesulfonate

Abstract:In this study, a microbial fuel cell powered electro-Fenton system (MFCⓅEFs) was established in order to overcome the shortcomings of low electron flux and unexpected methane production, while simultaneously treating excess sludge (ES, substrate) and refractory syringic acid (SA). A strategy of co-adding lysozyme (LZ, as ES degradation catalyst) and 2-bromoethanesulfonate (BES, as methane inhibitor) into ES was optimized in MFCⓅEFs to maximize electron flux, microbial community diversity and functional gene abundance. The removal of sludge total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) achieved 81.69% in 25 d under an optimal co-addition strategy (40.41 mg/gSS of LZ, 27.03 mmol/L of BES, adding on 22.8 h of the7th day), with a simultaneous high degradation of SA (99.30% in 25 h). Correspondingly, a maximum power density of 3.35 W/m3 was achieved (only 0.62 W/m3 from the control), which effectively realizes in-situ micro-electricity generation and utilization for bioelectric Fenton processes. Moreover, 42.25% of the total charges were employed for bio-electricity generation. The electricigens of Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter and Chlorobium showed effective enrichment, while the abundance of methanogenesis archaea was extremely decreased. Functional genes associated with methanogenesis including mtaA, hdra, and mcrA were effectively inhibited. The life cycle assessment along with an optimized co-addition strategy illustrated a beneficial environmental effect, particularly in terms of ecosystem quality and climate change. Above all, an enhanced synchronous degradation of excess sludge and refractory pollutants had been realized in a green and environmentally friendly way.
Rapid degradation of sulphamethoxazole and the further transformation of 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole in a microbial fuel cell

Abstract:Sulphamethoxazole (SMX) is extensively used in humans and livestock, but its appearance in natural water raises environmental concerns. This study demonstrated that SMX and its degradation product, 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole (3A5MI), could be effectively degraded in microbial fuel cell (MFC) reactors. Approximately 85% of 20 ppm SMX was degraded within 12 h, and this was a more rapid biodegradation rate than has been previously shown in the literature. In addition, 3A5MI, a toxic chemical that forms in the SMX degradation process, can be further mineralized. The degradation products of SMX were detected by mass spectrometry, and three speculated by-products were confirmed with chemical standards. It was observed that nitrogen atoms of SMX were progressively eliminated during the degradation process, which may relate with the degradation of SMX and 3A5MI. An antibacterial activity test showed that the biotoxicity of SMX towards Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and Escherichia coli DH5α was greatly reduced after MFC treatment. Moreover, the ATP level of the MFC microbe was nearly threefold higher than that in open-circuit controls, which may be related to the rapid degradation of SMX in MFCs. This study can facilitate further investigations about the biodegradation of SMX.

Abstract:The removal rate and degradation pathway of Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) in bioelectrochemical system (BES) and the elimination dynamics of SMX in a BES driven by stacked constructed wetland-coupled microbial fuel cells (CW-MFCs) were investigated. The results found that SMX (30mgL-1) was rapidly degraded in the BES, and the SMX removal kinetics was simulated well by a first-order kinetic model (R2>0.93). Low current had no effect on the degradation products but enhanced the SMX removal rate. Biotransformation was the main pathway for the SMX elimination in the BES. The CW-MFCs supplied adequate and stable electricity (0.84-1.01V) to support the BES for rapid SMX degradation without additional energy inputs. The relative abundance of Methanosarcina (18.7%) and VadinCA11 (3.1%) increased with an increase in voltage up to 1.2V. However, the opposite was observed for Methanosaeta and Methanomassiliicoccus. The current in the BES influenced the methanogenic communities.

Abstract:The microbial fuel cell (MFC) system is a promising environmental remediation technology due to its simple compact design, low cost, and renewable energy producing. MFCs can convert chemical energy from waste matters to electrical energy, which provides a sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for pollutant degradations. In this review, we attempt to gather research progress of MFC technology in pollutant removal and environmental remediation. The main configurations and pollutant removal mechanism by MFCs are introduced. The research progress of MFC systems in pollutant removal and environmental remediation, including wastewater treatment, soil remediation, natural water and groundwater remediation, sludge and solid waste treatment, and greenhouse gas emission control, as well as the application of MFCs in environmental monitoring have been reviewed. Subsequently, the application of MFCs in environmental monitoring and the combination of MFCs with other technologies are described. Finally, the current limitations and potential future research has been demonstrated in this review.

Abstract:A Pseudomonas sp. strain WL2 that is able to efficiently metabolize ethyl mercaptan (EM) into diethyl disulfide (DEDS) through enzymatic oxidation was isolated from the activated sludge of a pharmaceutical wastewater plant. One hundred percent removal of 113.5 mg L-1 EM and 110.3 mg L-1 DEDS were obtained within 14 and 32 h, respectively. A putative EM degradation pathway that involved the catabolism via DEDS was proposed, which indicated DEDS were further mineralized into carbon dioxide (CO2), bacterial cells, and sulfate (SO4 (2-)) through the transformation of element sulfur and ethyl aldehyde. Degradation kinetics for EM and DEDS with different initial concentrations by strain WL2 were evaluated using Haldane-Andrews model with maximum specific degradation rates of 3.13 and 1.33 g g(-1) h(-1), respectively, and maximum degradation rate constants of 0.522 and 0.175 h(-1) using pseudo-first-order kinetic model were obtained. Results obtained that aerobic degradation of EM by strain WL2 was more efficient than those from previous studies. Substrate range studies of strain WL2 demonstrated its ability to degrade several mercaptans, disulfides, aldehydes, and methanol. All the results obtained highlight the potential of strain WL2 for the use in the biodegradation of volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSCs).
